Rumor: IGN selling Direct2Drive to Gamefly

IGN's Direct2Drive is allegedly being sold to GameFly, MCV reports. An official announcement is expected next week. Direct2Drive does offer a limited selection of game rentals, which fits in directly with GameFly's business model. Sources, while unable to confirm the sale, do tell us that IGN has been looking to unload D2D for some time.

This would be the second major announcement out of News Corp's IGN in under a month. The company announced in early May it was merging with UGO, and reports indicated that the company would spin off from News Corp.

IGN and GameFly told Joystiq in perfect harmony that neither company will "comment on rumors or speculation."

Direct2Drive bringing game rentals to UK, Europe this year

Direct2Drive's downloadable game rentals kicked off in North America this past January, and the program has been so popular that it's coming to Europe later on this year. That's the word from head of international digital distribution Paul Herron, who says that "publishers are positive and gamers love the service, with the conversion from rental to purchase remaining extremely high."

It's not clear yet which games will be available for rental in the regions. North America still only has about six titles on tap, and Herron says the publisher is "securing content" for the European launch. In many European countries, the company doesn't even have the download service up and running yet, so, yeah: first things first, guys.

Mac games on sale at Direct2Drive until March 11

Wow, Macs as a gaming platform is totally en vogue this week. First, we've got Valve teasing something Apple related. Now, Direct2Drive is holding a sale on all its Mac games ... you know, all five of them. Kidding, there's way more than five. Some big ones in there too, like Dragon Age: Origins, offered at 50 percent off ($33). Other highlights include:

Sims 3 - $25
Prince of Persia (the latest one) - $25
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - $15
World of Goo - $10

The sale lasts one week, until March 11, 2010, at 10AM Pacific. Looks like Direct2Drive wants to get one good sales push in before Steam allegedly comes to Mac.

Direct2Drive offering $10 off Dragon Age: Origins through Nov. 30

Starting now until November 30, Direct2Drive is offering $10 off either the standard edition or Digital Deluxe Edition of BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins. The exclusive sale kicks off an upcoming Thanksgiving price drop on unnamed titles from the digital download service.

The standard edition is priced at $39.95, while the Deluxe edition is priced at $54.95 for the promotion. With the savings we recommend you look into purchasing the (somewhat controversial) downloadable content already available for the title. If paying for storage space is your thing, that is.
