<ol>
    <li>Increased risk of lung cancer, high blood pressure, bronchitis, emphysema.</li>
    <li>It smells.</li>
    <li>Wii lens damage!!1!</li>
</ol>
Rather than lecture you on the first two (because hey, they're your lungs, bucko), we want to concentrate on the latter. Back in February, Japanese gamers <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/brawl-demands-a-clean-home/">reported</a> that Wiis were having trouble reading newly purchased copies of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/smash-bros-brawl"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a>. Nintendo's intervention was swift, with the company blaming dirty console lenses -- <em>Brawl</em> was the first Wii game to release on a dual-layered DVD, and therefore especially sensitive to this issue.<br /><br />Nintendo's first practical solution was ... not so swift. As in, it just came out now. The Wii Lens Cleaner Set is available to order on Nintendo's Japanese site for &yen;800 (around $8) or <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-10u-49-en-15-wii+lens+cleaner-70-2zw3.html">Play-Asia</a> for a tenner. It should leave your console lens <em>sparkling</em> and your <em>Brawl</em> career <em>resurgent</em>. Whadd'ya mean <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/game-night/">everyone plays <em>Mario Kart</em> now</a>? Hush!<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5063040/now-you-can-clean-your-wii-lens">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/14/dirty-disc-drive-lens-nintendo-has-your-back/">Dirty disc drive lens? Sports fans, grab the tissues because the tears are about to start flowing. Users on the official <a href="http://forums.ea.com/mboards/thread.jspa?threadID=432040&amp;tstart=0">EA Sports forum</a> are reporting widespread disc read error issues with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NHL-09/">NHL 09</a></em> -- over time. Many users are reporting the popular hockey franchise works as advertised during the initial play through but eventually crashes after loading saved modes or regular games once the Xbox 360 reboots.<br /><br />While EA has yet to release an official statement regarding the problem users have found success with two <em>bandaid</em> solutions -- which point to cache problems in the game. According to the EA Forum users clearing the cache of the Xbox 360 and disabling the auto-save feature in <em>NHL 09 </em>may help fix the problem but as gamers play more of the game the issue returns.<br /><br />Let's hope we'll get a fix for the game soon. Actually, it's cool. We'll just play our 82 game seasons in one sitting. No, really.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> EA Sports <a href="http://www.easportsworld.com/en_US/blogs/view/bid/5601">actually responded</a> to this issue late last night recommending the cache clear route as a possible solution. They have yet responded to the cries for a patch.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/13/nhl-09-disc-error-also-known-as-the-cache-time-bomb/">NHL 09 disc error also known as the cache time-bomb</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 13 Sep 2008 16:00:00 EST. Nintendo has spoken to Eurogamer in regards to everyone <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/13/mario-kart-wii-is-also-prone-to-disc-errors/">getting worried about <em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> DVD discs not playing and Nintendo is, frankly, wondering what the whole deal is. They've apparently gotten no such reports themselves, stating that their game is everything they hoped it would be.<br /><br />The big difference between <em>Mario Kart Wii </em>and <em>Smash Bros. Brawl</em>, the other game that has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/09/disc-errors-plague-some-unlucky-brawlers-nintendo-offers-repair/">a thorn in the sides of some folk</a>, is that <em>MK</em> does not come on a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/brawl-demands-a-clean-home/">dual-layered DVD like <em>Brawl</em></a>, so that isn't the situation. And, until we get a disc in our own Wii, we're just going to take all of this with a healthy supply of salt.<br /><br /><strong>See also: </strong><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/glitching-with-ghosts-in-mario-kart-wii/">Glitching with ghosts in <em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a><br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/14/nintendo-no-issues-with-mario-kart-wii-that-we-know-of/">Nintendo: No issues with Mario Kart Wii that we know of</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. Brawl</em>? As it turns out, <strike><em>Mario Kart Wii</em> is susceptible to the same <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/brawl-demands-a-clean-home/">"dirty laser lens"</a> problems, as the game is also on a dual-layered disc.</strike> some people are also having problems with <em>Mario Kart Wii</em>. Whether these problems are also due to dirty laser lenses or if there was just a batch faulty discs remains to be seen.<br /><br />In any case, a handful of gamers in Japan are reporting problems, and there have been instances in which the software won't even start up. We wouldn't worry <em>too</em> much over the issue, though. Theoretically, if <em>Brawl</em> works with your Wii, <em>Mario Kart</em> should too (even though it's <em>not</em> the same dual-layered disc issue). If you haven't tested out <em>Brawl</em> on your Wii yet, though, you might want to cross your fingers come launch day.<br /><br />Have any of you readers who've already purchased the game experienced any problems?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=40081">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/13/mario-kart-wii-is-also-prone-to-disc-errors/">Mario Kart Wii is also prone to disc errors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 13 Apr 2008 14:00:00 EST. Did you pop in <em>Brawl</em> early this morning, only to find out that it wouldn't play? You're not the only one. <br /><br />A number of Wii owners on this side of the globe are reporting problems similar to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/04/brawl-demands-a-clean-home/">ones seen in Japan</a> -- disc errors, supposedly caused by dirty laser lenses. Since <em>Smash Bros</em>. is the Wii's first game that's on dual-layered DVD, it's extra sensitive to such problems.<br /><br />The good news is that Nintendo will fix the problem for you. The bad news is that it might be a few more weeks before you get to play <em>Brawl</em> ... or any Wii game, for that matter.<br /><br />Nintendo is urging people experiencing this problem to fill in <a href="http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/repair/repair_form_us_ssbb.jsp">this form</a> and send in their Wiis for repair. They'll be footing the bill for the shipping and repair costs (as they should), so the only thing you'll be losing out on is quality time with your new copy of <em>Brawl</em>.<br /><br />Are any of you affected by this problem? If so, feel free to rant about it here. Just let it all out.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/09/disc-errors-plague-some-unlucky-brawlers-nintendo-offers-repair/">Disc errors plague some unlucky Brawlers, Nintendo offers repairs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Mar 2008 12:30:00 EST.
