Sony confirmed to <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jan/04/playstation-2-manufacture-ends-years">The Guardian</a> that, following the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/28/playstation-2-discontinued-in-japan-after-almost-13-years-of-ser/">recent news</a> of it being discontinued in Japan, the best-selling home console ever is now no longer being manufactured.<br /><br />Sony boasts total software sales for the console of over 1.5 billion, in addition to more than 150 million PS2s sold. Rivals Nintendo and Sega barely shifted more than 30 million units of the GameCube and Dreamcast put together. It's unlikely we'll see a console dominate its generation so resoundingly ever again. Out of respect for the countless hours of gaming goodness it provided us, we at Joystiq are tearfully doffing our hats in memory of that little black box. That'll do, pig. That'll do.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/07/playstation-2-is-now-discontinued-worldwide-confirms-sony/">PlayStation 2 is now discontinued worldwide, confirms Sony</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 07 Jan 2013 09:00:00 EST. As <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/news/201212/28026636.html">Famitsu</a> reports, production of the venerable black box ceased today nearly 13 years after its launch on March 4, 2000.<br /><br />While the original PlayStation sits in and around the 100 million mark, the PS2 built upon that success to sell over 150 million units worldwide and dominate its generation. Its long life in Japan is a testament to it comfortably being the best-selling home console ever.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/28/playstation-2-discontinued-in-japan-after-almost-13-years-of-ser/">PlayStation 2 discontinued in Japan after almost 13 years of service</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Dec 2012 11:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.videogamepricecharts.com/">VideoGamePriceCharts.com</a>, a site that tracks average online prices for video games and consoles, has <a href="http://blog.videogamepricecharts.com/2010/01/2009-game-publisher-resale-value-report.html">released its year-end report for 2009</a>, and if you were buying and selling games speculatively (we all do that, right?), you'll want to check it out. Okay, so maybe you weren't picking up the now-discontinued <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/atlus-more-demons-souls-shipping-to-retailers-deluxe-edition/"><em>Demon's Souls Deluxe Edition</em></a> because you hoped it would get rare, but if so, you're in luck: That game topped the list, raising in value from an MSRP of $69.99 up to a high of $116. <em>Grand Theft Auto IV's Lost and Damned</em> retail box (which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/gta-iv-the-lost-and-damned-dlc-unboxing-video/">contained a code for the DLC</a>) is another big collector's item, and if you were so lucky as to nab a copy of Bass Pro Shops' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-strike"><em>The Strike</em></a> (with Fishing Rod) for Xbox 360, then reel in the money, because it <a href="http://www.videogamepricecharts.com/game/xbox-360/bass-pro-shops:-the-strike-with-fishing-rod">raised in value</a> over 50%. Whew! Welcome to the exciting market of video game price speculation!<br />
<br />
For a little more practical information, you can also see which companies and consoles kept their value in 2009 -- turns out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mtv-games">MTV</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/atlus">Atlus</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo">Nintendo</a> games all did well at resale, with the Wii (surprise!) topping the market for overall value held among its games. Of course, you should really be buying games (and supporting developers) for their quality, not for their resale value, but it doesn't hurt to figure out which ones will give you a few more bucks in return when you're done.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/30/video-game-price-charts-reveal-biggest-resale-prices-of-2009/">Video Game Price Charts reveal biggest resale prices of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 30 Jan 2010 06:30:00 EST. Although not mentioned as part of today's Xbox 360 price drop <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/its-official-xbox-360-price-drop-coming-this-wednesday/">announcement</a>, more evidence is coming in that the Xbox 360 Core model may be finished. An employee of a Target store took multiple images (sadly the clearest one is above) of the store's PDA showing the Core model as "discontinued" in the "status" bar at the top right. <br /><br />This follows last week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/best-buy-done-with-xbox-360-core-model/">Best Buy information</a> that the Core model was finished there as well. The stories are starting to stack up. We've been told by numerous sources that their various stores haven't stocked Core units in a while, this all feels identical to the way the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/r-i-p-playstation-3-20gb-is-officially-no-more/">PS3 20GB death</a> occurred earlier this year.<br /><br />[Thanks Anonymous]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/rumor-target-done-with-xbox-360-core-model/">Rumor: Target done with Xbox 360 Core model</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 14:45:00 EST. Although there is no official word that the PlayStation 3's 20GB model is finished, the Sony Style stores haven't had them in stock for a long time and the SonyStyle.com mother ship is done with the model -- it's <a href="http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_ParametricSearch-Start?search_keyword=playstation+3&amp;selected_category_name=None&amp;SearchAll.x=0&amp;SearchAll.y=0&amp;SearchAll=Search">no longer listed on the site</a>. We contacted SonyStyle.com and were told, "We haven't had it in stock for a month ... We're not getting any more. You could maybe go out and find one." Going to a Sony Style store isn't going to get you anywhere either. One store we called had the same story as SonyStyle.com. A sales representative said, "We haven't gotten those [20GB] models in for a long time. We have plenty of 60 gig models in stock." When asked if the model had been discontinued he said, "Not officially ... but we haven't seen any in a long time."<br /><br />Best Buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/17/best-buy-done-with-ps3-20gb/">stopped carrying the 20 GB model</a> last month. As of mid-March Sony told us the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/14/rumor-debunk-no-more-u-s-20gb-ps3-and-euro-backward-compatibil">20GB model was still being manufactured</a> and that "retailers have been requesting the 60GB model, the mix has been about 80 percent 60GB, 20 percent 20GB retailer orders." Sony's own stores are part of that 80 percent now. Having two models of the PlayStation 3 is a nice gesture, but if a product is no longer being stocked by anyone, including Sony's own retail chain, does it really still exist?<br /><br />[Thanks Jason]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/05/sony-style-stores-done-with-20gb-model/">Sony Style stores done with 20GB model</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 05 Apr 2007 21:55:00 EST.
