But we also vainly hoped the company would alter the title for the American version to something that makes even the slightest bit of sense. No such luck.

Square Enix announced that DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY will arrive on PSP in North America sometime next year, bringing new characters (Kain, Tifa, and Lightning, so far), a playable Chaos storyline, and a new, RPG-style mode along with it. We now hope it'll be available on PSN so we don't have to look another human being in the face when we buy something called DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY. Why would you do this to your own game, Square Enix? If you don't want anyone to buy it, just don't release it.

Gallery: Dissidia: Duodecim Final Fantasy

Continue reading DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY coming to North America, name intact

DISSIDIA 012[duodecim] FINAL FANTASY coming to North America, name intact originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 12:30:00 EST. DISSIDIA 012 [duodecim] FINAL FANTASY may have a bizarre, head-scratching title, but its brand new features make a whole lot of sense. The follow-up to 2008's mash-up fighter offers the most obvious addition for a sequel: an expanded roster, including Final Fantasy XIII's Lightning and Final Fantasy VII's Tifa. However, it also includes a number of other features that make the experience more engaging for fans, and more accessible for newcomers to the franchise.

The original Dissidia met a mixed response from fans due to its rather unique combat system. Instead of copying the model of other fighters -- Nintendo's Smash Bros., or Capcom's Vs. series -- Square Enix crafted a battle system inspired by Advent Children, but still rooted in RPG mechanics. If that doesn't make much sense to you, you are not alone.

Arguably the biggest new feature for Duodecim is the addition of an "RPG Mode" that strips down the combat experience into something that might be a bit more familiar to traditional Final Fantasy players. Unlike the traditional "Action Mode," you lose direct control over your character in this mode, relegated to selecting commands. You'll be able to switch between attacking Bravery and HP, or choosing a more defensive role. It may seem like the game is simply controlling itself, and to a certain degree, it is. However, this mode lets you understand the various mechanics that are at play in Dissidia without being overwhelmed.
Continue reading DISSIDIA 012 [duodecim] FINAL FANTASY preview: a sensible sequel

DISSIDIA 012 [duodecim] FINAL FANTASY preview: a sensible sequel originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 18 Sep 2010 15:00:00 EST. Flower
This year had a number of terrific downloadable games (this list is a testament to that), however no game -- retail or digital -- connected with me like Flower. Jenova Chen's flOw was an interesting experiment, but Flower is an actual game. In fact, Flower is one of the few experiences I can think of that show the true potential of games as a unique storytelling medium. No other non-interactive art form will ever be able to replicate what thatgamecompany has managed to create.
Continue reading Best of the Rest: Andrew's Picks of 2009

Best of the Rest: Andrew's Picks of 2009 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 02 Jan 2010 21:00:00 EST. The PSP-exclusive Final Fantasy fighter is having a one-day sale at amazon.com today. The online retailer is taking 30% off the retail price, removing the much-hated "Square Enix" tax. You'll be able to pick up the UMD for $28, including free shipping (with no sales tax, for most).

Of course, because this sale is only for the UMD version, those of you that purchased a PSP Go today will be out of luck. Hopefully, Sony keeps an eye on these sales and makes PSN versions competitive during their weekly Thursday updates.
Dissidia drops to $28 for a day originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Oct 2009 13:16:00 EST. Dissidia: Final Fantasy is just okay. While the time I spent with the game's combat was certainly fun, if repetitive at times, a truly awful story and seemingly arbitrary customization options weigh down an otherwise decent fighting game. After 10 hours and a handful of characters, I was left wondering exactly who the game was intended for -- the FF fan in me loathed the story and the fighting game fan in me wanted deeper, more varied combat.

Continue reading Review: Dissidia: Final Fantasy (PSP)

Review: Dissidia: Final Fantasy (PSP) originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 Aug 2009 16:20:00 EST. Square Enix is planning on tapping into a time-tested recipe for success in the Japanese games market -- if a game you release is overwhelmingly successful, then ... release it again! This time around, the title receiving the revamp treatment is the soon-to-be-released-in-America RPG brawler, Dissidia: Final Fantasy -- or, as it will be called when it gets relaunched in Japan this November, Dissidia: Final Fantasy Universal Tuning. (That's fancy Squeenix-speak for "International Version.")

Japanese tech blog AndriaSang learned the titular Tuning will add features to the game that have been added in the European and North American versions of the game -- features such as English voice overs and an arcade-style time attack mode. It shares the same November 1 release date as the PSP Go -- and in a clever sale-boosting move, will be released both as a UMD (for ¥5,040) and a PSN download (for ¥4,000). Sweet! You can save up that extra ¥1,040 for the release of Dissidia: Final Fantasy Universal Tuning Deluxe Remix Turbo Fighter!
Japan getting international version of Dissidia, coincides with PSP Go launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Aug 2009 11:15:00 EST.
Even if you've already pre-ordered your copy elsewhere, Amazon is offering a deal on Dissidia: Final Fantasy that's worth checking out (unless you're after the PSP-3000 bundle, that is). By placing the game in your virtual shopping cart and entering the coupon code SAVE5DIS at checkout, the online retailer will knock $5 off its asking price of $36.99. Since the game sells for more than $25, you won't pay shipping or sales tax and will save the dough brick and mortars ask for pre-orders. So, if you ever see one of us on the street in need of cab fare, remember who did you a solid with this one, 'kay?

Update: We posted this deal earlier in the week, however the code wasn't active yet. We're glad to report the coupon code should be active now.

Have you seen the latest episode of Pulse, the fortnightly PSN content highlight video? If so, you will have noticed that a demo for Square Enix's next PSP release, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, will be available to download on July 23. That's the expected release date, at least, but don't be surprised if it slips back down the slippery slope leading to the PSN servers. It wouldn't be the first time.

For many of us this will be the first time to see how the game actually works, as screenshots and videos have shown nothing more than a lot of mindless mid-air hacking and slashing. For a game which apparently lasts for over 40 hours, there's got to be a little more to it than that.

Dissidia will be making its way to European shores -- that's the UK and across all PAL territories -- on September 4. While we may have suspected that some kind of Front Mission game was coming, we wouldn't have guessed that it would be a third-person shooter instead of a strategy game, nor that it would be developed by a Western company (Silent Hill: Homecoming's Double Helix Games, specifically). The E3 lineup press release highlights SE's efforts to become a more "global" company, and it hardly gets more "global" than handing one of its existing IPs over to a Western developer to be made into a PS3/Xbox/PC shooter.

NIER is a new PS3/360 action game developed by Bullet Witch/Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles maker cavia. Players control NIER, who fights in a "crumbling world" to find a cure for his daughter, who is infected with the "Black Scrawl virus."

The announcement also provided a firm release date for DISSIDIA Final Fantasy and its PSP bundle: August 25. The first episode of the WiiWare Final Fantasy IV: The After Years was also dated -- for this Monday! Now, who would have thought you could print on both sides of paper? Apparently, Square Enix discovered it could do just that with its North American Final Fantasy: Dissidia box art. Taking advantage of the whole good versus evil theme, future owners of the title can choose whether they want to sport the villainous force of Chaos on the outside, or flip out the baddies for a cover featuring the heroic champions of Cosmos.

With this, and the recently announced Final Fantasy PSP bundle, it appears Square Enix is really looking to push Dissidia forward. Look out for it in August.
Dissidia US release has reversible dark & light cover art originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 15 May 2009 21:00:00 EST. Dissidia, the Final Fantasy fighter, is hitting western PSPs later this year. While series spokesperson Tetsuya Nomura says a sequel would be difficult to do, another Square Enix producer thinks differently. Speaking to Final Fantasy Union, Dissidia director Takeshi Arakawa said the team would "like to make an attempt to make a sequel." However, that comes with a clause: the game must be successful when it launches in the US and Europe.

Well, there you go. If you want a sequel, you're going to have to buy the first Dissidia. Considering it's one of the most anticipated titles on the PSP right now, we're sure that's not going to be a problem for Square Enix.

[Thanks, Kyle!]
Want a Dissidia sequel? The first official US debut trailer for Dissidia: Final Fantasy has made its way onto GameTrailers (you can watch it past the break) and, like most Square Enix trailers, is full of great music and lots of words. Oh, and CG. Square Enix loves the CG. But, we will admit that even though there's no gameplay footage, there is a certain warm, fuzzy feeling we get seeing Final Fantasy's good guys square off against the series' evil doers.

Dissidia: Final Fantasy will release in the US this summer.
Continue reading Dissidia US announcement trailer heavy on CG, still cool

Dissidia US announcement trailer heavy on CG, still cool originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Apr 2009 10:30:00 EST. It's okay, Europeans. You can stop holding your collective breath. Dissidia, the Final Fantasy fighting game, will definitely be heading to PAL regions. The PSP exclusive will be available to purchase in the region this Autumn, a few months after the American "mid-year" launch. A Final Fantasy game doing well? Who would've thunk it?! Square Enix's PSP-only Final Fantasy brawler has continued its dominance over the Japanese game charts in January, with over 186k units sold in January. This bumps the total number of copies sold to 846k. It's clear that it will only take a few more months for the game to cross the million threshold.

The rest of the top 10 charts are dominated mostly by Nintendo games, with the odd exception of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (yes, they're still buying that game), and White Knight Chronicles for PS3. The PSP-exclusive Final Fantasy brawler may be the only fighting game featuring the famed RPG characters for quite some time. Tetsuya Nomura revealed in the Japanese "Ultimania" strategy guide that a sequel isn't in the works, in spite of plans to originally make one. (Translation via 1UP) "There are no current plans for a sequel. To be honest, I wanted to do one up until a few months ago. I even called [Mitsunori] Takahashi, the planning director, and [Ryuji] Ikeda, the lead programmer, to talk about sequel concepts -- I told them to think about what they were going to do and prepare themselves [to make a sequel]."

Although there was intent to create a sequel, it appears that idea is dead. Nomura said that making a sequel would be "very difficult," although didn't provide any details. Considering Dissidia isn't out in the US yet, we're still waiting for the original game before clamoring for a sequel.

Dissidia sequel would be 'very difficult,' says Nomura originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 01 Feb 2009 21:00:00 EST. In making up for the lack of full localization efforts, pre-orderers of the Korean version of Dissidia: Final Fantasy will be getting nifty calendars to prop up on their study or work desks. The free calendars feature character portraits drawn by Tetsuya Nomura, as well as Chaos/Cosmos artwork done by Yoshitaka Amano.

As Siliconera points out, these calendars will be slightly obsolete by the time North America gets Dissidia in mid-2009. Hopefully Square Enix has some other bonus material planned for North American gamers.
Koreans get Dissidia calendars originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 11:00:00 EST. Proving that if you slap "Final Fantasy" on anything it'll sell, PSP-exclusive Dissidia took the top sales spot in Japan for the week ending Dec. 21. The "Smash Bros. of Final Fantasy characters" sold an impressive 489,126 copies in its debut week, topping the first-week sales of Final Fantasy Crisis Core by 3,000 units, according to PSPHyper.

Dissidia also translated into hardware sales for the PSP, summoning the masses to purchase 145,957 units -- a 104% increase from the prior week. Check out the top 10 selling games in Japan for the week ending Dec. 21 after the break.

Surprising no one, Dissidia was numero uno on last week's Media Create Japanese sales charts, selling an astonishing 489,126 copies. Did it have the best debut week ever for a PSP title in Japan? Of course not, not even close -- that honor belongs to Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which managed to push 820,000 copies out the door in its first week, according to PSPHyper. However, it did beat out another Final Fantasy spinoff, Crisis Core, by 3,000 units.

On the hardware side, it was also a healthy week for the PSP: our beloved portable saw 145,957 units in sales, though it was still bested by the DS, which sold 204,144 units. Now the real question is, does Square Enix's fan-service brawler have the momentum it takes to be top dog again next week? Sales numbers and ranking for the top 10 Japanese games of the week are after the jump:

Dissidia has graced Japan and it won't be long until the rest of the world will be able to join in. As expected, the CG intro to the Final Fantasy mash-up is epic -- perhaps more so than we could have possibly imagined. Who didn't see this coming? Dissidia, Square Enix's PSP-exclusive Final Fantasy brawler, sold 350,000 units in its first day in Japan, according to Sinobi. 40k of the total went to sales of the 20th Anniversary Limited Pack, which includes a special limited PSP-3000 system. This means Dissidia's launch is equal to that of Crisis Core -- but it still can't touch the incredible sales of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which sold 670,000 units when it debuted.

A US release is scheduled for release in mid-2009. However, for those curious about the controls, an English manual can be read here.

[Via PSPHyper]
Dissidia sells 350k during Japanese launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 09:58:00 EST. Square Enix announced today that Dissidia Final Fantasy, which released this week in Japan, will make its way to North America in "mid-year 2009." For those who need a refresher on what this Final Fantasy is all about: it's the PSP-exclusive fighter that has established Final Fantasy characters battling it out like they're in Super Smash Androgyny Brawl.

The title received a 36/40 from Famitsu and the story mode allegedly takes 40 hours -- this is a fighter, right?

Square Enix has just officially announced Dissidia: Final Fantasy for North America. Not much new information was provided, other than what we already know -- the story involves Cosmos and Chaos, who are locked in an eternal conflict, the characters will span from different Final Fantasy titles in the past 20 years, the battle system will be action-based and you will have the ability to trade Friend Cards. Unfortunately, no word on the fancy-schmancy limited edition.

The release window is said to be "mid-year 2009," so it is still at least several months away. We can't wait! And while you do that, check out our hands-on with the brawler.

Dissidia had one last trailer to show before its highly anticipated release in Japan this Thursday. The trailer which debuted on Japanese television this Tuesday morning featured a lot of what we've already seen before, but also had five seconds of something all new. Those last five seconds revealed one more character to join the Dissidia gang and that would be none other than FFXII's Judge Gabranth.

IGN points out that the trailer didn't show off any battle footage and it's not certain whether Gabranth will be playable. The other late reveal, FFXI's Shantotto is confirmed to be playable and this leads us to believe Gabranth will be to. We guess we'll find out this Thursday, won't we?
FFXII's Gabranth makes Dissidia cut originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 22:30:00 EST. Another year, another Final Fantasy, another Potion. That's how things work. Square Enix seems to love making branded beverages with partner Suntory, assaulting gamer tastebuds across all of Japan. This year's collection is obviously Dissidia-themed. There are 16 cans to choose from, 8 that represent "Chaos" and 8 that represent "Cosmos." According to 1UP, the "Chaos" side is dark muscat grape-flavored, while the "Cosmos" side is astringent grapefruit-flavored. Yum?

There are a number of pictures for you to click through over at Neocrisis. We're wondering how long it'll take for these drinks to end up on eBay.
More Final Fantasy means more Potion originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 16:25:00 EST. The latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has just come out, and things are looking good for Square Enix's PSP-exclusive fighter, Dissidia. While Famitsu is known for inflating some of its scores for anticipated games, we're hoping this initial good review is the sign of things to come. Dissidia received a 36/40 -- a full point higher than Square Enix's other big Final Fantasy game -- Crisis Core.

PSPHyper's translation of the issue suggests the story mode will take 40 hours to complete. To collect all the items, however, will take upwards of a hundred. It's going to take a lot of trips on the subway to get through the amazing amount of content Dissidia seemingly promises.

Famitsu loves Dissidia, notes 40 hour story mode originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 09:52:00 EST.
Did you like Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children? Well, Square Enix is giving you a chance to summon the inner film director in you in their upcoming fighting game, Dissidia. Your fights can be dramatically choreographed and then edited through the in-game replay editor. Watch this example video of Cloud and Sephiroth doing what they do best -- beating each other to a pulp -- to see the editor in action.

Yes, you can make custom replays in Dissidia originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Dec 2008 21:49:00 EST. Dissidia: Final Fantasy is out in two weeks, but Square Enix is already offering some sweet, free content. If you love collecting themes for your PSP, then you'll want to download the three that are available off the official Dissidia website. The three themes correspond to the first three Final Fantasies; each theme features their respective hero/villain combination.

Just remember -- in order to transfer the files to your PSP -- hook up your PSP to your PC via USB cable and enter USB mode. Then open up the folder "PSP" and then "Themes." Just drag-and-drop it there. Now your themes are good to go. Also, after the break, check out a vid detailing how the game's story mode progresses.

[via PSP Hyper]
Continue reading Download Dissidia themes for your PSP

Download Dissidia themes for your PSP originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Dec 2008 07:30:00 EST. Speaking in an interview with Japan's Weekly Famitsu (which is courteously translated by 1UP), the Dissidia dev team has spoken out about the possible inclusion of Final Fantasy XII and XIII characters making their way into the game. Creative producer Tetsuya Nomura replied to the mag when drilled on those sought after games, but Noms had some disappointing news to reveal: "One idea we had was to include an FFXIII character, but having one debut in Dissidia would lock down the image of his or her skills and so forth, perhaps affecting FFXIII in the process. As a result, we couldn't get permission."

That's rather understandable. But wait; what about FFXII? Well, Nomura was a little more mysterious in his answer for this one: "As for FFXII, just stay tuned for now (laughs)." Is he laughing because we're totally not going to see a character from the game? Or, is he laughing because we're definitely going to see one? Commence dramatic progressive argument in our comments section!
Dissidia creators talk FFXII, FFXIII characters originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 13:45:00 EST. Who would have thought that Dissidia news could appear in a place like Final Fantasy XI's "Vana Fes 2008 in Korakuen" from this past Saturday? Well, not us, that's for sure. We were pretty content with the fact that only the first ten titles would have representatives, though this entry seems to have broken that rule. Shantotto, a Tarutaru black mage and NPC, is -- thus far -- the only character from the MMO-RPG to make an appearance.

Currently, it's unknown whether Shantotto will be playable or just making a cameo in some non-fighting parts of the game. Could this also mean that FFXII and FFXIII could also still secretly make its way into the game? It's a rather exciting thought, is it not?

[Via PSP Hyper]
Final Fantasy XI invades Dissidia originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 24 Nov 2008 06:30:00 EST.
In the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, the Communication Mode in Dissdia is explained. Players begin by waiting in an Online Lobby that is capable of accommodating 16 players. Each player can create their own profile called a Friend Card -- one of the functions of this card is it allows the game to keep track of your how you play and creates a "ghost" of you. You can then transfer this "ghost" to a friend's game and they can fight a character controlled by the A.I. that imitates your fighting style. The scan also shows the EX modes of Cloud (who wields the Ultima Weapon) and Sephiroth (as the One-winged angel). Lastly, adhocParty will be supported. The rest of the scans are here.

In related news, V Jump published some new art from Dissidia, the most striking of which is the above poster featuring all the characters in the game. Unlike other artwork from the game, this one is rendered in CG. Dissidia is literally only a month away from release in Japan and Square Enix isn't skimping on the information. The trailer we saw in Square Enix's Closed Theater is now available for public viewing pleasure (we really wished SE would do this with the rest of their Closed Theater trailers), as we've posted it right after the break. It's probably going to be the last trailer we see as it really hits the climax. Cloud and Terra were revealed in this trailer and you can finally see in-game footage of their fights.

In related news, Square Enix also released images of the Limited Edition game and PSP packaging. As seen above, the game packaging features some very detailed work from famed artist Yoshitaka Amano. It shows all ten heroes together with Cosmos. The Limited Edition PSP box is all white with a solid logo and some subtle designs.
Fan service is a good thing when it's done to enhance the gaming experience and not just make up for a lack of substance. In the case of Dissidia: Final Fantasy, there are a lot of solid, new gameplay elements which fit in well with the dazzling flash that Final Fantasy is known for -- so it's got the best of both worlds.

Nothing sums this merging of innovation and style more than the EX Mode. You'll see why when you watch the embedded video above when Squall and Zidane show off the Renzokuken and Trance, respectively. The timed-input events, and the visceral, swift action makes Dissidia look like the most exciting PSP title this (Japanese) holiday season. It makes us sad to remember that a North American release has yet to be heard of.
Dissidia vids: Squall and Zidane in EX Mode originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Nov 2008 12:30:00 EST. PSP is increasingly resembling its big brother, PS3. Dissidia, PSP's upcoming Final Fantasy-themed fighter from Square Enix, will feature "Data Install," an optional feature that will allow players to shorten load times by installing some key information onto the Memory Stick. Reading data off the flash drive is much faster than the UMD, and for those that can afford to sacrifice some space, this feature will be helpful. (Another game to take advantage of this feature: Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G)

Players can choose three different installs, to take as little as 245MB to as much as 528MB of data. Of course, for the shortlest load times possible, players in Japan will undoubtedly want to buy the game off the PlayStation Store and have the entire game on their Memory Stick.
Dissidia will also feature Data Install originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Nov 2008 08:38:00 EST. One didn't think that Kefka, the insane clown-like villain with the distinctive laugh from Final Fantasy VI, could get any creepier. But he just totally did in the latest Dissida art of him, as revealed by Shonen Jump -- look at the way he's ogling at poor Terra/Tina. She ain't no damsel in distress though; her EX mode named "Trance" is looking pretty powerful.
