Toys R Us has decided that <a href="http://www.toysrus.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=11958635&amp;pg=1"><em>all peripherals must go</em></a>, and in order to clear the shelves as quickly as possible, a ridiculous number of DJ Hero, Tony Hawk, and Guitar Hero bundles for all systems have been marked down to $9.99. If you've just got <em>too darn much</em> free space in your living room, make <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/20/peripheral-price-drop-madness-guitar-hero-dj-hero-and-tony-ha/#continued">the jump</a> for the full list of store-only mega-deals. We recommend getting a swift move on, however; even with these franchises functionally dead, we don't expect this stuff to hang around for long. <br />

	<img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/eric-hirshberg-atvi.jpg" style="margin-left: 4px; margin-right: 4px; margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px; width: 530px; height: 184px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; " /></div>
When Eric Hirshberg stepped into the role of CEO of Activision Publishing last July, the company had just begun <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@breakup">an ugly, public battle</a> with the founders of Infinity Ward, having <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/02/activision-confirms-infinity-ward-studio-heads-departures/">fired</a> the creators of the company's <em>Call of Duty</em> cash cow just four months prior. Frequently villainized in the press, the appointment of Hirshberg seemed to indicate that Activision was eager to turn its brand identity around. Hirshberg cut his teeth as CEO and chief creative officer of marketing firm Deutsch LA making ad campaigns for brands like PlayStation -- you may not recognize that name, but if you've seen a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kevin-butler">Kevin Butler commercial</a>, you know his work. And as Activision Publishing narrows its focus and energies into a few key brands, notably the aforementioned <em>Call of Duty</em>, tasking a marketing man with running a game publisher starts to make a lot of sense.<br />
<br />
Last month I had the opportunity to speak with Hirshberg in his office at Activision headquarters in Santa Monica. It was less than a week after a massive leak upended the company's carefully prepared marketing plan for the latest in the blockbuster <em>Modern Warfare</em> series and, for Hirshberg, it was a chance to connect with that audience. "We woke up with a marketing crisis," <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/the-modern-warfare-3-leak-from-activisions-perspective/">Hirshberg told me</a>, "and wanted to go to bed with a marketing win." Throughout our conversation, Hirshberg mentioned the need to be transparent with consumers, so I challenged him to explain some of the company's more controversial decisions since he's been CEO: the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">cancellation of <em>True Crime</em></a>; the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/activision-finds-no-bizarre-buyers-recommends-closure/">closure of Bizarre Studios</a>; and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">very public retreat</a> from the <em>Guitar Hero</em> and <em>DJ Hero</em> games.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/activision-publishing-ceo-eric-hirshberg-on-true-crime-bizarre/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg on True Crime, Bizarre Creations, the 'Hero' franchise, and transparency</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/activision-publishing-ceo-eric-hirshberg-on-true-crime-bizarre/">Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg on True Crime, Bizarre Creations, the 'Hero' franchise, and transparency</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 13:43:00 EST. <em>DJ Hero</em> developer FreeStyleGames has officially survived "the great Activision <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/23/heroic-sacrifices-the-companies-behind-guitar-hero/">music genre</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">culling</a> of 2011." The fate of the developer was still <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/fate-of-dj-hero-dev-freestylegames-still-undecided/">undecided</a> earlier this year, but Creative Director Jamie Jackson announced today that the studio "will continue [its] strong partnership with Activision."<br />
<br />
There was some collateral damage, as a studio rep confirmed 35 positions would be lost. The developer is currently working on a "new, innovative" unannounced project. The studio plans to share details about the upcoming title in the coming months.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/dj-hero-dev-freestylegames-survives-to-make-another-game/">DJ Hero dev FreeStyleGames survives to make another game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 10:21:00 EST. The mysteriously replenishing spring of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> DLC has turned out <a href="http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=570038">yet another batch</a> of downloadable mixmasterpieces -- and it might just be the most danceable selection of new additions to date. Well, we're <em>assuming</em> they possess a high danceability, considering the dance-centric lineage of their inventors: There's a track by Benny Benassi, Deadmau5 and Yolanda Be Cool and DCUP, all of which have been remixed by the folks at FreeStyleGames.<br />
<br />
We've contacted Activision to find out exactly how many mashed-up downloadables they've got left in the chamber. Hopefully, the answer is "a lot" -- we're still waiting on pins and needles for that totally dope Crosby, Stills and Nash remix. For now, check out this week's new additions after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/19/dj-hero-2-gets-even-more-5weet-jam5-from-benassi-deadmau5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DJ Hero 2 gets even more 5weet jam5 from Benassi, Deadmau5</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/19/dj-hero-2-gets-even-more-5weet-jam5-from-benassi-deadmau5/">DJ Hero 2 gets even more 5weet jam5 from Benassi, Deadmau5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Apr 2011 11:01:00 EST. This is just silly: The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> turntable bundle has been marked down from $59.99 to $29.99 on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&amp;field-keywords=dj+hero+2&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">Amazon</a> and <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-dj+hero+2">GameStop</a>. No reason for the massive discount is given on either retailer's site, but we're just going to assume its a national holiday dedicated to the honorable craft of Disc Jockeying.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/dj-hero-2-bundles-price-scratched-down-to-30-at-gamestop-and-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DJ Hero 2 bundle's price scratched down to $30 at GameStop and Amazon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/12/dj-hero-2-bundles-price-scratched-down-to-30-at-gamestop-and-a/">DJ Hero 2 bundle's price scratched down to $30 at GameStop and Amazon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Apr 2011 11:55:00 EST. If you like your beats fresh and your hip-hop obscure, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a>'s latest three-song DLC bundle was carefully tailored for your very subset of desires. The "Indie Hip Hop Mix Pack" is available now through the in-game music store, and includes a trio of mashed-up selections featuring works by RJD2, Jaylib, Atmosphere and Peanut Butter Wolf, who is obviously the most delicious wolf of all time.<br />

Though the DLC well for the <em>Guitar Hero</em> and <em>DJ Hero</em> franchises was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/10/guitar-hero-and-dj-hero-dlc-dead/">supposed to dry up</a> at the end of this month, it seems that Activision's not quite ready to retire the ol' pump (or bucket, depending on how old-timey the well in question is). The official Twitter feeds for <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DJHero/status/41260419049984000">both</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/GuitarHero/status/41259241088098304">series</a> have announced that more DLC is planned for their respective stores, citing "continued support" from their communities for the change in position.<br />
<br />
Both feeds promised that more information about the new content is coming "soon" -- we'll let you know when we learn more. That is, after we scold Activision for playing with our emotions so recklessly. Seriously, this is like the time our parents told us our hamster died, and then a week later, told us that they were just kidding about the hamster thing, only we later found out that, yes, our hamster was actually <em>totally dead</em> the whole time<em>.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/26/more-guitar-hero-and-dj-hero-dlc-coming-thanks-to-continued-sup/">More Guitar Hero and DJ Hero DLC coming thanks to 'continued support' from fans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Feb 2011 17:00:00 EST. If you've had your fingers crossed that FreeStyleGames would make it through Activision's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/activision-to-reduce-headcount-by-around-500/">culling</a> of around 500 jobs unscathed -- well, keep those digits twisted. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero</em></a> developer's creative director Jamie Jackson and commercial director Chris Lee <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-02-24-dj-hero-devs-fate-still-undecided">announced</a> this morning in a joint statement, "We continue positive discussions with Activision around possible routes for FreeStyleGames," adding, "We have not reached an agreement as of today, however we are in continued dialogue and hope to have more news soon."<br />
<br />
The statement didn't include any other hints about how these dialogues are going, but did mention, "Messages from the industry and gamers alike have been warmly received and we are incredibly grateful for the support." Here's another for the pile: <em>DJ Hero</em> games are awesome, and we sincerely hope you get to keep making them.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/fate-of-dj-hero-dev-freestylegames-still-undecided/">Fate of DJ Hero dev FreeStyleGames still undecided</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 14:30:00 EST. The latest set of tracks to make it out during this series countdown clock is a set of three tracks from the Australian group <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendulum_(band)">Pendulum</a>. Interestingly, this pack had yet to be announced ahead of time, despite Activision's assertion that only what had already been announced would be available, and will be available today.<br />
<br />
The Pendulum Mix Pack includes "Watercolor," "Set Me On Fire," and "Salt in the Wounds" -- that last one maybe hitting a <em>little</em> close to home for <em>DJ Hero/</em><em>Guitar Hero</em> fans -- andcosts 640 Microsoft Points or $7.99. Tracks can be purchased independently on Wii for 300 Wii Points each.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/activision-surprises-dj-hero-2-fans-with-pendulum-dlc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Activision surprises DJ Hero 2 fans with Pendulum DLC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/15/activision-surprises-dj-hero-2-fans-with-pendulum-dlc/">Activision surprises DJ Hero 2 fans with Pendulum DLC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Feb 2011 10:25:00 EST. Despite reports of "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">severe layoffs</a>" at <em>DJ Hero</em> development house FreeStyleGames yesterday, a statement issued by creative director Jamie Jackson, design director David Osbourn, and commercial director Chris Lee says that "no decisions have been taken at this stage" regarding the future of the studio. Furthermore, the trio noted, "We're actively working with Activision on various options going forward" -- it all sounds very reminiscent of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bizarre-creations">Bizarre Creations</a>' recent closing, frankly. <br />
<br />
It certainly doesn't help that plans for future downloadable content in the <em>DJ Hero</em> and <em>Guitar Hero</em> franchises <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/10/guitar-hero-and-dj-hero-dlc-dead/">have been dissolved</a>, not to mention Activision's statement during yesterday's financial call: "We simply cannot make these games profitably based on current economics and demand." Neither Activision nor FreeStyleGames have commented regarding yesterday's alleged layoffs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/10/dj-hero-dev-freestylegames-in-limbo-actively-working-with-acti/">DJ Hero dev FreeStyleGames in limbo, 'actively working with Activision on various options'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 12:00:00 EST. 7 Studios, part of Activision's music game division, has been shut down, according to staff posting on Twitter. Following Activision's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">announcement</a> yesterday that its <em>Guitar Hero</em> business unit would be disbanded and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/activision-no-new-music-or-skateboarding-games-this-year/">no new music games</a> would be released this year, 7 Studios producer Damon Conn <a href="http://twitter.com/ultimateconn/status/35493193873227776">tweeted</a>, "Directly affected me. Our music games division really took a hit today."<br />
<br />
"Activision is shutting down the <em>Guitar Hero</em> business as of today. This includes my studio," another 7 Studios staff member named Alex <a href="http://twitter.com/alex_victory/status/35459716582744064">confirmed</a> last night on Twitter, "Anyone know of any open associate producer jobs?" (This appears to be the Twitter account of 7 Studios' Alex Beckers, who has updated his <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/alexbeckers">LinkedIn profile</a> to reflect the end of his employment at the studio. [Update: Beckers has <a href="http://twitter.com/alex_victory/statuses/35750990766411777">confirmed</a> his Twitter identity.])<br />
<br />
"Lame day, but [I'm] optimistic about the future [and] wish the best to all my current/former colleagues," added 7 Studios creative director Dan Lehrich on his <a href="http://twitter.com/ontheDLL/status/35481612825272320">Twitter account</a>. "Good luck to all, let me know if I can help." Lehrich later <a href="http://twitter.com/ontheDLL/status/35487950141657088">exchanged</a> <a href="http://twitter.com/alex_victory/status/35482143836610560">tweets</a> with Beckers in a heartfelt goodbye.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/7-studios/">7 Studios</a> was acquired by Activision in early 2009, an action that launched a still-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/7-studios,lawsuit/">ongoing series of lawsuits</a> with publisher Genius Products, which had contracted 7 Studios to create <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/scratch-the-ultimate-dj/"><em>Scratch: The Ultimate DJ</em></a> (pictured) before Activision stepped in and scooped up the studio (halting <em>Scratch's</em> development). In October 2009, Activision <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/06/report-activision-reduces-7-studios-by-half/">reportedly</a> reduced 7 Studios' staff by half, leaving the developer with approximately 30 employees (<a href="http://www.linkedin.com/company/seven-studios">LinkedIn</a> currently lists 36).<br />
<br />
7 Studios was assumed to be the <em>DJ Hero</em> "B-team," supporting Freestyle Games as needed, including work on <em>DJ Hero 2</em>. "I can't tell you what they're doing, but they're doing some cool stuff," Activision exec Dave Stohl told us <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/activision-studios-head-brings-development-strategy-into-focus/">last July</a>. "They have supported FreeStyle a little bit, but they're doing something new and different." According to Lehrich's <a href="http://Unannounced Projects (iOS), Guitar Hero VIP Pass (Xbox360), Various Prototypes/Concepts (Xbox360, PS3, PC, Mac, iOS) ">LinkedIn page</a>, 7 Studios was involved in the creation of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/guitar-hero-vip-pass-is-your-waypoint-for-dlc/">Guitar Hero VIP Pass</a> DLC hub, in addition to "Unannounced Projects" for iOS and "Various Prototypes/Concepts" for a number of platforms.<br />
<br />
Both Conn and Beckers additionally <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/damonconn">list</a> <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/alexbeckers">involvement</a> in last year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/18/get-ready-for-space-camp-from-activision/"><em>Space Camp</em></a>.<br />
<strong><br />
Update:</strong> A source close to the situation, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells us that approximately half of 7 Studios' staff members were immediately laid off and will receive sixty days worth of severance pay. The remaining staff are apparently directly involved with the aforementioned lawsuits, which are reported to go to trial next month. Allegedly, these staff will be paid for the next 120 days, which is expected to cover the time it takes to resolve the legal dispute with Genius Products. The source additionally confirmed that 7 Studios had been working on a few music-related iOS games.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/10/7-studios-shut-down-part-of-activision-music-game-cutback-staf/">7 Studios shut down, part of Activision music game cutback, staff report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST. There's been some considerable debate on these here internets about the status of the Guitar Hero franchise. Thanks to "continued declines in the music genre," Activision yesterday announced that it plans to not only "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">discontinue development on its <em>Guitar Hero</em> game</a> for 2011" (read: cancel it) but also to "disband Activision Publishing's <em>Guitar Hero</em> business unit." But what about the <em>DJ Hero</em> franchise, and the promising <em>DJ Hero 3D</em>, you ask? "We will release no new music or skateboarding games," <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/activision-no-new-music-or-skateboarding-games-this-year/">CFO Thomas Tippl said</a> of this calendar year. It certainly appears the franchise is dead, but some insist it's simply taking a year off. They'll keep making DLC, right?<br />
<br />
<em>Right? <br />
</em> <br />
"We will release the previously announced DLC track and mix packs for February, but - unfortunately," <a href="http://www.djhero.com/en-us/community/news/637?tab=news">a FAQ answer on the official DJ Hero website states</a>, "we will not be able to release new DLC packs beyond what we already have." The question specifically asked, "Are you still going to make new DLC for Guitar/DJ Hero?" Of course, existing DLC will remain available (for now) and existing games will remain available at retail (for now). <br />
<br />
Perhaps most telling is that one FAQ question and answer was duplicated twice, at the beginning and end, bookending the official response with a rather ominous message. "Does this mean you're no longer making Guitar (and/or DJ) Hero games?," it asks ... twice. "Over the past two years, we have seen rapid declines in the music genre, and unfortunately, based on current demand, we simply cannot continue to profitably make these games given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs." <br />
<br />
As a means of punctuation, that sounds awfully definitive. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/10/guitar-hero-and-dj-hero-dlc-dead/">Guitar Hero and DJ Hero DLC supply over after February</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Feb 2011 10:00:00 EST. The grim fates of <em>True Crime</em> and whatever installment of the <em>Guitar Hero</em> series that was in development <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/report-activision-axing-guitar-hero-and-true-crime-freestyle-g/">are known</a> -- but what about Activision's other perennial franchises? A few (equally grim) details surfaced during Activision's investor's call today, during which COO Thomas Tippl explained, "We will release no new music or skateboarding games" during the current calendar year.<br />
<br />
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg added some more insight into the company's shift away from the music genre, explaining that even though <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock">Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock</a></em> were well-received, "demand for peripheral-based music games declined at a dramatic pace." He continued, "Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply cannot make these games profitably based on current economics and demand." However, Activision will continue to support its existing music games with DLC.<br />
<br />
We're still left with a lot of questions, though (and we're working on the answers). For instance, what does this mean for the 3DS-bound <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-3d"><em>DJ Hero 3D</em></a><em>?</em> What about the <em>Tony Hawk </em>series at large? Activision's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/08/activision-still-pushing-shred-believes-tony-hawk-the-man-has/">frequently spoken</a> about its staying power -- and if no <em>Hawk</em> title drops in 2011, it would be the first calendar year in the franchise's history without a new entry <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Hawk_%28series%29#List_of_games_in_the_series">since 1999</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/activision-no-new-music-or-skateboarding-games-this-year/">Activision: 'No new music or skateboarding games' this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 17:27:00 EST. Activision has dropped the retail price for <em>Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock</em> and <em>DJ Hero 2</em> standalone software and bundles. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock"><em>Warriors of Rock</em></a> is now $49.99 (-$10), $79.99 (-$20) and $159.99 (-$20) for the game, guitar bundle and band bundle, respectively. <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> has been reduced to $49.99 (-$10) for the game and $59.99 (-$20) for the single turntable bundle. <br />
<br />

KISS-mas? That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it? Regardless, a trio of KISS tunes for <em>Guitar Hero</em>: <em>Warriors of Rock, </em>including "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Detroit Rock City" and "Calling Dr. Love," will be available today on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii for $5.50 (440 MS Points). The songs will also be available individually for $2 apiece.<br />
<br />
If you're still feeling a little PECK-ish for music DLC (okay, <em>that</em> was a stretch), Linkin Park adds remixes of "The Catalyst (Does It Offend You, Yeah? Remix)," "When They Come For Me" and "Pts.OF.Athrty" to <em>DJ Hero 2</em>. The pack will cost 640 Microsoft Points on Xbox 360, $7.99 on PS3 and be sold individually at 300 Wii Points each on Nintendo's console.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/21/guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock-gets-kiss-mas-track-pack/">Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock gets KISS-mas Track Pack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Dec 2010 11:12:00 EST. And, in keeping with the concept of the game, it's a pretty eclectic mixture. Today, you'll be able to download a track mixing The Pixies' "Debaser" and The Prodigy's "Invaders Must Die," and a track that combines the Beastie Boys' "Body Movin'" with Lenny Kravitz's "Rock and Roll Is Dead." Well, is it dead or is the body movin'?<br />
<br />
On December 14, an "Old Skool" pack will include combinations of the Fat Boys and Mantronix, Tag Team and 45 King, and Beastie Boys with Tone Loc. We're a bit worried about that last one, as we'd be terrified of the side effects after changing the composition of the Funky Cold Medina. It's volatile on its own!<br />
<br />
On December 21, the promised <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/linkin-park-dlc-album-bonus-announced-for-guitar-hero-and-dj-he/">Linkin Park remix DLC</a> will be available. We're listin' all the DLC after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/upcoming-dj-hero-2-dlc-dares-to-mix-funky-cold-medina/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Upcoming DJ Hero 2 DLC dares to mix Funky Cold Medina</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/upcoming-dj-hero-2-dlc-dares-to-mix-funky-cold-medina/">Upcoming DJ Hero 2 DLC dares to mix Funky Cold Medina</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 12:00:00 EST. Looking to expand your <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a></em> and/or <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock">Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock</a></em> catalogues at a significant discount? Activision's <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/free-downloadable-content-now-available-for-dj-hero-2-and-guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock-presented-by-coca-cola-110117594.html">offering of free DLC</a> for each game seeks to solve your problem, adding a DJ Tiesto-mixed three-track pack to <em>DJ Hero 2</em> and a My Chemical Romance pack to <em>Warriors of Rock</em>, each of which is free in the US "via redemption code while supplies last." The catch: each pack is free for <em>this week only</em> before becoming paid content on November 30 (also, the content for <em>Warriors of Rock</em> is only available to Xbox 360 owners).<br />
<br />
Details for both packs can be found after the break, including pricing for when they're no longer free next week. But hey, you're on top of things, so you're totally gonna get them while they're free. Head over to Activision and Coca-Cola's <a href="http://www.mycoke.com/guitarhero">code generating website</a> "while supplies last."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/23/dj-hero-2-and-guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock-free-dlc-available-n/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock free DLC available now until Nov. 30</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/23/dj-hero-2-and-guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock-free-dlc-available-n/">DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock free DLC available now until Nov. 30</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Nov 2010 16:30:00 EST. If this sounds like a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/music-game-sales-down-46-still-third-best-selling-genre/">familiar tune</a>, it is: Music game sales have plummeted for a second-straight year. But this year, the tune is <em>way more</em> off key.<br />
<br />
According to analysis by <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/31641/Analysis_US_Music_Game_Sales_Have_Dropped_Fivefold_Annually_Since_2008.php">Gamasutra</a>, which looked at the period from January through October in each of the past three years, music game revenues in the U.S. have taken a phenomenal nose dive from an epic height of $1.6 billion in 2008 to where they've landed today: under $250 million for the year. "Short of a Christmas miracle," concludes analyst Matt Matthews, "music games won't break $400 million for all of 2010." <br />
<br />

Whoa, Target. Slow your roll, guys. We've only got enough energy for <em>exactly one</em> three-day period of soul-crushing retail immersion, and that three-day period is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/black-friday-2010">next weekend</a>. You can't just come in here with your "we're going to offer deals in the four days preceding Black Friday" attitude. It's not fair. It could <em>kill us</em>.<br />
<br />
We're just going to post all of Target's video game-themed "<a href="http://bfads.net/Ad/Target-Pre-Black-Friday">Pre-Black Friday</a>" deals -- which will be available Nov. 21 to Nov. 24 -- after the jump, and ignore their relative savoriness. Oh, $30 off the purchase of a DSi? $20 off a new Wii? <em>DJ Hero 2</em> Turntable Bundle for $75? Psh. We can ... we don't need to ... <em>we are going to run out of money</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/19/target-pre-black-friday-sale-discounts-dsi-dj-hero-2-and-more/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target Pre-Black Friday sale discounts DSi, DJ Hero 2 and more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/19/target-pre-black-friday-sale-discounts-dsi-dj-hero-2-and-more/">Target Pre-Black Friday sale discounts DSi, DJ Hero 2 and more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Nov 2010 06:00:00 EST. In a video game's lifetime, the first-week sales are often the most crucial, representing some of biggest numbers a publisher will ever see for a game. That's why Robomodo's second peripheral-based Tony Hawk title, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/tony-hawk-shred">Shred</a></em>, seems to have gotten off to a grim start, selling just 3,000 copies in its first week at retail.<br />
<br />
Speaking with GI.Biz, Investment firm Cowen and Company detailed October's North American retail showings (following yesterday's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/october-npd-nba-2k11-tops-charts-xbox-360-best-selling-consol/">NPD report</a>) and pointed out that another Activision October release, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a>, </em>moved 59,000 copies in its first two weeks of availability. For comparison's sake, those aren't huge sales for <em>DJ Hero 2, </em> but it nearly 20 times more than <em>Shred</em>. These numbers are perhaps least surprising to <em>Shred</em>'s developer, Robomodo; the developer cut staff last month and is said to be off the Tony Hawk franchise.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/tony-hawk-shred-wobbles-first-week-at-retail/">Tony Hawk: Shred wobbles first week at retail</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 12:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/dj-hero-2-dlc-packs-coming-in-nov-plus-original-dlc-compatibil/">promised</a> free "Compatibility Pack" for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a></em> have arrived on their respective digital stores, giving owners the ability to import <em>DJ Hero 1</em>'s DLC into the sequel. The game's <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DJHero">official Twitter representation</a> announced as much today, clarifying that "some <em>DJ Hero 2</em> functionality is not supported in this update," specifically listing "freestyle cross-fading, freestyle scratching, and vocals" as the main culprits.<br />

Determined to get the most out of his appearance in <em>DJ Hero 2</em>, Tiesto has cut a music video for his track "Speed Rail" using only footage from the game. Well, <em>background footage</em>, anyways. The video doesn't show the player <em>desperately</em> trying to keep up with Tiesto's high-speed crossfading antics.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/tiesto-speed-rail-music-video-made-entirely-from-dj-hero-2-foo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tiesto 'Speed Rail' music video made entirely from DJ Hero 2 footage</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/tiesto-speed-rail-music-video-made-entirely-from-dj-hero-2-foo/">Tiesto 'Speed Rail' music video made entirely from DJ Hero 2 footage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 02:00:00 EST. <em>DJ Hero</em> was a profoundly innovative game -- spun off from a franchise and a publisher rarely applauded for their profound innovation -- tapping into new genres of music and methods of interacting with it. It was, for lack of a better term, lightning in a bottle and, for all its inherent freshness, an <em>awfully</em> difficult act to follow.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> manages to iterate on the series' debut outing not by introducing new modes or instruments -- okay, it tries to do both of those things with moderate success -- but rather, by polishing the very mechanics of virtual mixmastering to a near-perfect sheen.<br />

Activision completely understands. That's why the company is releasing a six-pack of songs from Linkin Park's new "A Thousand Suns" album (cover image above) on October 19 as <em>Guitar Hero</em> DLC. In addition, a set of three remixed Linkin Park songs will be available this winter in <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a></em>.<br />
<br />
If you'd like to hear the <em>rest</em> of that album, you can get a free copy with orders of<em> <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock">Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock</a></em> or <em>DJ Hero 2</em> from Amazon, between "12:01am PST on October 17 and 11:59pm PST on October 23." This is the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/03/get-new-soundgarden-album-early-with-guitar-hero-warriors-of-ro/">second free album</a> to be bundled with <em>Warriors of Rock</em>! In the future, our entire music library will consist of freebies from Activision.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/linkin-park-dlc-album-bonus-announced-for-guitar-hero-and-dj-he/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Linkin Park DLC, album bonus announced for Guitar Hero and DJ Hero</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/14/linkin-park-dlc-album-bonus-announced-for-guitar-hero-and-dj-he/">Linkin Park DLC, album bonus announced for Guitar Hero and DJ Hero</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 12:00:00 EST. After being curiously absent from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/21/dj-hero-2-soundtrack/">on-disc soundtrack</a>, Jay-Z, one-half of the original <em>DJ Hero</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/jay-z-and-eminem-headline-dj-hero-event/">promotional duo</a>, returns for a <em>guest</em> verse in the first <em>DJ Hero 2</em> DLC pack. Available November 2, the Hit Makers Mix Pack bundles three mixes for $8, including a Rihanna's "Umbrella" / Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" mashup. Two weeks later, the Electro Hits Mix Pack will be released, packing decidedly more oomph-oomph. Complete details of both packs are posted after the break.<br />
<br />
Additionally, a free compatibility update will be released in November to enable support for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dj-hero,dlc/">existing <em>DJ Hero</em> DLC</a> in <em>DJ Hero 2</em>. Activision has not specified if this update will reformat the original DLC to feature new gameplay elements. (The gameplay differential between the first and second games could be a contributing factor in the apparent lack of a soundtrack importing option from <em>DJ Hero 1</em> to <em>2</em> -- that and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/dj-hero-2-made-in-seven-months-following-enormous-vacation/">the race</a> just to complete the <em>DJ Hero 2</em> content in seven months, not to mention possible music licensing limitations.)<br />
<br />
<em>DJ Hero 2</em> will be released next Tuesday, October 19 for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/dj-hero-2-dlc-packs-coming-in-nov-plus-original-dlc-compatibil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DJ Hero 2 DLC packs coming in Nov., plus original DLC compatibility update</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/13/dj-hero-2-dlc-packs-coming-in-nov-plus-original-dlc-compatibil/">DJ Hero 2 DLC packs coming in Nov., plus original DLC compatibility update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 12:15:00 EST. If your lack of a turntable -- or a current-gen gaming console, for that matter -- kept you from enjoying the Xbox Live and PSN demo for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a>, you've now got a few other options for channels through which to get a sample portion of the upcoming rhythm sequel. The first, and most accurate method for you to try out the game is to go to your local Best Buy, as <em>DJ Hero 2</em> demo units have been placed in over 900 of the retailer's locations across the country.<br />
<br />
A slightly less authentic way to try the game out is to play the flash-based, <a href="http://www.djhero.com/en-us/try/demo">online demo</a> that was recently added to the game's official site. It boils down the controls to a fairly simple mouse-and-keyboard scheme, but you should get a good idea of what playing the full title is going to feel like.<br />
<br />
Finally, you can watch a new <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjbII5xqG8s"><em>DJ Hero 2</em> trailer</a> after the jump, which seems to indicate that playing the game allows you to <em>kiss the braces right off of an attractive girl's mouth</em>, which we don't really remember happening while playing the series' first installment.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/dj-hero-2-demos-hit-best-buy-and-the-web-new-trailer-hits-our-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DJ Hero 2 demos hit Best Buy and the web, new trailer hits our soul</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/dj-hero-2-demos-hit-best-buy-and-the-web-new-trailer-hits-our-s/">DJ Hero 2 demos hit Best Buy and the web, new trailer hits our soul</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 22:15:00 EST. Jamie Jackson, creative director at <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a></em> developer Freestyle Games, told <a href="http://uk.playstation.com/psn/news/articles/detail/item310636/Game-Talk-DJ-Hero-2/?site_locale=en_GB">PlayStation UK</a> in an interview recently that the latest title was made in just seven months. The game reportedly kicked off development immediately after a "mass exodus" at the studio, clarified to Joystiq as a "big holiday" for the team. According to Jackson, "15-hour days for quite a long time" resulted in the vast majority of the studio vacationing in places like Ibiza to get the creative juices flowing once more. When everyone was back, the team had to hop right back in the saddle for the sequel.<br />
<br />
"We had to get straight back on it ... so <em>DJ Hero 2</em> has been made in around seven months," Jackson explained. And though the team only had a handful of months to get the sequel together, it wasn't interested in putting out "the same game again with different music" -- Jackson got specific, shouting out the new Battle Mixes and Freestyling features as improvements made despite a dramatically shortened development cycle. And now, with the game nearly complete, we have to imagine that various Mediterranean islands are bracing for impact.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/dj-hero-2-made-in-seven-months-following-enormous-vacation/">DJ Hero 2 made in seven months following enormous vacation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 15:20:00 EST. Activision has outlined the different incentives which retailers are offering to shore up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> pre-orders -- however, the variation between these bonuses is about as wide as we've ever seen for a video game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/dj-hero-2-pre-order-bonuses-offer-your-choice-of-turntable-totes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DJ Hero 2 pre-order bonuses offer your choice of turntable totes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/dj-hero-2-pre-order-bonuses-offer-your-choice-of-turntable-totes/">DJ Hero 2 pre-order bonuses offer your choice of turntable totes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 13:40:00 EST. Kenny Rogers is fond of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/dj-hero-2-in-europe-includes-free-dj-hero/#continued">reminding us</a> "you've got to count your dub-plates before you touch the turntables, because if you run out of big tunes, it means your sound is done." The catch, of course, is that if there's no stopping your party, there's really no way to tell how many is enough. That said, we're pretty sure European purchasers of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> are going to be in a better position to follow The Gambler's advice when they collect the free copy of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero">DJ Hero</a>, </em>that Activision has announced will be included in their purchase of the Party or Turntable bundle (while supplies last).<br />
<br />
In total, the deal will net buyers 170 mixes, which we'd assume are enough big tunes. Again though, and we can't stress this enough, <em>there is no way of knowing</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/dj-hero-2-bundles-include-free-dj-hero-in-europe/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DJ Hero 2 bundles include free DJ Hero in Europe</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/dj-hero-2-bundles-include-free-dj-hero-in-europe/">DJ Hero 2 bundles include free DJ Hero in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 11:45:00 EST. Sometimes you've just gotta diverge from the game plan and just <em>freestyle it</em>, you know? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em>'s</a> already got more than a little turntablist cred with a roster that includes mixes from Tiesto, Deadmau5 and DJ Qbert -- earlier today, things went <em>straight tazy</em> with the addition of <a href="http://oneofswords.com/2010/09/a-trak-and-diplo-join-dj-hero-2-mixmasters/">a few heavy hitters</a>. Kanye West's touring DJ, A-Trak, and Major Lazer co-founder Diplo will also be contributing to the game's soundtrack, as will prolific <em>DJ Hero 1</em> mixmasters DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Shadow, DJ Z-Trip and The Scratch Perverts. Man, those guys are <em>disgusting</em>.<br />
<br />

Leery of this fall's literal interpretation of the <em>"Guitar Hero"</em> franchise? In an attempt to assuage your skepticism, Activision has wisely released the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Guitar-Hero-Warriors-of-Rock/">Warriors of Rock</a> </em>demo <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0ddf0001-0000-4000-8000-000041568894">on Xbox Live</a> today. Players can sample "Johnny Napalm's chapter" -- and upgrade the literal hero -- in the quest to save the Demigod of Rock (pictured; with his <em>literal</em> axe). Surprisingly, you still use a plastic guitar to play songs in the game. The demo features the following:
<ul>
    <li>Dethklok - "Bloodlines"</li>
    <li>Black Sabbath - "Children of the Grave"</li>
    <li>Foo Fighters - "No Way Back"</li>
    <li>Slash featuring Ian Astbury - "Ghosts"</li>
</ul>
Additionally, the<em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/DJ-Hero-2">DJ Hero 2</a></em> demo is expected on Xbox Live Marketplace today (though it's currently missing from the service) and features the following mixes:
<ul>
    <li>"American Boy" (by Estelle featuring Kanye West) mixed with "Good Times" (by Chic)</li>
    <li>"Don't Cha" (by Pussycat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes) mixed with "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" (by Pitbull)</li>
    <li>"Bounce" (Battle Mix) (by MSTRKRFT featuring N.O.R.E.)</li>
    <li>"Just Dance" (by Lady Gaga featuring Colby O'Donis ) mixed with "Ghosts N Stuff" (by Deadmau5)</li>
</ul>
As usual, both demos are exclusive to Xbox Live Gold subscribers for one week. (Silver members can today download the <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/OfferRedirect.ashx?Id=66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80255538863"><em>R.U.S.E.</em></a> and <em><a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/OfferRedirect.ashx?Id=00000000-0000-400d-80df-00015345884f">Vanquish</a> </em>demos.) Historically, most <em>Hero</em>-brand demos have been exclusive to Xbox Live, and today's demos are not expected for release <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn-weekly">on PSN</a> when the service updates later today.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/07/guitar-hero-warriors-of-rock-dj-hero-2-demos-on-xbox-live/">Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, DJ Hero 2 demos on Xbox Live today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Sep 2010 12:20:00 EST. Activision today officially welcomed RZA to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/DJ-Hero-2,playable-characters/">the cast</a> of <em>DJ Hero 2</em>. The legendary Wu-Tang leader's inclusion as a playable character was first hinted at when RZA <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/27/rza-wraps-up-mocap-for-activision-game/">shared a few images</a> of his mocap costume for an unnamed Activision game back in April. RZA, who often performs as alter-ego Bobby Digital, said of his digitization, "Now, I actually exist in a digital world, yo."<br />
<br />
Additionally, RZA mixed two tracks for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> soundtrack. The first blends LL Cool J's "I Can't Live Without My Radio" with Grandmaster Flash &amp; The Furious Five's "The Message," and the second mixes Damian Marley's "Welcome To Jamrock" with Walter Murphy's "A Fifth of Beethoven." (RZA is also featured in the "Dollaz &amp; Sense" Blackroc track licensed for the game; <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/26/full-dj-hero-2-tracklist-revealed-by-an-informer-a-licky-boom-b/">see the complete track listing here</a>.)<br />
<br />
Catch RZA wax poetic on his journey from paperboy to <em>DJ Hero 2</em> in the video after the break. "Bong bong!"<br />

It's going to be a good day, and you don't even know it yet. See, Activision <a href="http://investor.activision.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=502695&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter">just released</a> the full list of songs that will be featured in some spliced manner in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a>, meaning you're probably going to spend all day listening to the fresh, fresh songs you don't recognize, and then imagining the fresh, fresh manner in which they'll be blended. We've spent the past half hour envisioning a world where Snow's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D39Lm_HRfOs">Informer</a>" could somehow be married to Major Lazer's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxD_7S7bl8k">Pon De Floor</a>," with a splash of Tiesto to boot. It's been a pretty great half hour.<br />
<br />

A DJ's life isn't all about mixing phat beats and ill rhymes, you know. As the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dj-hero-2"><em>DJ Hero 2</em></a> trailer below shows, they've got other things to worry about, too. Things like branding, legacy, and running the hottest dance club within the Ibizan city limits.
