Reference publisher <a href="http://dk.com/">DK</a> announced today that it has partnered with Microsoft to publish the <em>Halo Encyclopedia</em>. As its title suggests, the <em>Halo Encyclopedia</em> is a reference guide to everything in the <em>Halo </em>universe including "characters, weapons, vehicles, equipment, and locations" from every <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/halo"><em>Halo</em></a> game all the way up to <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/halo-3-odst"><em>Halo 3: ODST</em></a>. The press release notes that Microsoft approached DK after the San Diego Comic-Con last year after seeing its reference guides to subjects like <a href="http://us.dk.com/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9780756630522,00.html?strSrchSql=star+wars/Star_Wars:_The_Ultimate_Visual_Guide_Daniel_Wallace"><em>Star Wars</em></a> and <a href="http://us.dk.com/nf/Book/BookDisplay/0,,9780756641238,00.html">Marvel comics</a>.<br /><br />The book will span 352 pages and will feature a foreword by <em>Halo </em>franchise development director (and former Bungie community guru) Frank O'Connor. The encyclopedia, which marks DK's first reference based on a game, is expected to be published in several territories and in different languages. It's scheduled to hit retail this November, and while no price is specified in the press release, Amazon is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Halo-Encyclopedia-DK-Publishing/dp/0756655498/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1239133384&amp;sr=8-1">offering</a> pre-orders for $27.34, which is apparently 32% off its list price of $40.<br /><br />The real question, of course, is whether the encyclopedia has an entry on what happened to the frakking pistol.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/dk-to-publish-official-halo-encyclopedia/">DK to publish official Halo Encyclopedia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 16:30:00 EST. While the prospect of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/gba_lenticular_display_lg.jpg">advertising the Game Boy</a> to ourselves every day sounds pretty good, we're going to have to pass on this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ebay">auction</a> for one of the sweetest things you could put on your wall. As has always been our luck, we're sadly stuck in the unfortunate position of having no monies to spend on anything right now, so it's not like our opinion regarding this lenticular display matters. Oh well ...<br /><br />What do you all think? Would you find hanging this sign up on your wall is as badass as we imagine it to be, or could you care less?<br /><br /><strong>See also:</strong> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/donkey-kong-gba-sp-is-the-rarest-member-of-the-dk-crew/">Donkey Kong GBA SP is the rarest member of the DK crew</a><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamesniped.com/">Gamesniped</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/advertise-the-game-boy-to-yourself-every-day/">Advertise the Game Boy to yourself every day</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 11:15:00 EST. It's just the way life is.<br /><br />But, we do have a lot of LEGOs. For Wii owners, there is likely one release that rests atop your list for games you want to pick up: <em>Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast</em>. A game that was to release on the GameCube, it's been updated for the Wii. And, we know how much you guys love Nintendo and their games, so are we correct in our assumption?<br /><br />What will you be playing? Some <em>Barrel Blast</em>, or are you trying to play something different, such as <em>Mercury Meltdown </em>or <em>Looney Tunes: ACME Arsenal</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/12/wrup-blasting-barrels-with-dk-edition/">WRUP: Blasting barrels with DK edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Oct 2007 16:00:00 EST. Much like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/01/wii-releases-for-the-week-of-october-1st/">last week</a>, this week is chock full of new releases for our beloved Wii. There's even one release that was to already be released last week, but had to be bumped forward to this week. There's even a title that originated on the GameCube releasing this week (which we've had some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/completely-unexciting-dk-jet-videos/">mixed</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/16/dk-bongo-blasts-bothersome-controls/">feelings</a> about)..<br />

Do people exist somewhere that don't own this system? If the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/japanesehardwaresales">Japanese sales charts</a> are to be believed, then there have been enough Nintendo DS systems sold so that every man, woman, child, and dog on the planet could have one of these. And a spare.<br /><br />However, if you are DS-less and have a hankering to get onboard with the action, and you have some rudimentary photochopping skills, then try your hand at the <a href="http://www.dkcontest.smugmug.com/">Nintendo DS/DK contest at SmugMug</a>. All you have to do is paste the little guy climbing to the top of pretty much anything, and then submit it. Keep in mind though, images must be under 12 mb in size (good gawd).<br /><br />It's a pretty easy contest to enter, and the swag is well worth the time, so why not whip something up and get in? We made one in just a few seconds (hint, it's the image for this post) so you should trump our skillz easily and submit it to them. <br /><br />Check out the rules on their site. Also, the <a href="http://dkcontest.smugmug.com/gallery/3327865#194269888">comment</a> on the first (and only) entry that's up so far is ... priceless. Today's dojo update provides us with a look at the Final Smash maneuver for Nintendo mascot Donkey Kong. Upon retrieving the item, Donkey Kong busts out his patented bongos. Upon beating on them with his most massive of hands, he slaps out a tune so deadly that it <em>kills all who hear it</em>. Except for large gorillas (we imagine the song is Eddie Murphy's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5LX16zia2k">Party all the Time</a>").<br /><br />You know the deal, images of DK rocking the bongos are in the gallery below.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/30/dojo-update-donkey-kong-final-smash/">Dojo update: Donkey Kong Final Smash</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Jul 2007 18:10:00 EST. As if E3 hasn't already brought us enough joy, we've got some nice pieces of concept art and screens for <em>DK Jungle Climber</em>. The game looks to be shaping up nicely and the included trailer only adds to the truckloads of awesome content we've all received so far. Check out the fresh screens and concept art in our gallery below, and be sure to head past the break for the trailer.<br /><br /><em>DK Jungle Climber </em>is currently slated for release on September 10th.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/e307-dk-jungle-climber-screens-and-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E307: DK Jungle Climber screens and trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/12/e307-dk-jungle-climber-screens-and-trailer/">E307: DK Jungle Climber screens and trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2007 15:40:00 EST. Even with a diminished E3, there's no controlling the wave of rumors that hit the Internet every year before the show. Why fight it? From now until E3 hits, we'll be posting one piece of wild speculation every day. Some may be patently ridiculous, and others just might turn out to be true. Even some of the ridiculous ones might turn out to be true! Rest assured, <em>everything will be totally made-up and unfounded.</em> Except, of course, when we speak about all the ass Reggie is going to kick. That part? Totally true.<br /><br /><strong>Rumor:</strong> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/03/new-e3-to-not-have-playable-smash-bros-on-display/"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a>'<em>s</em> online mode will be revealed! It's an online store in which you can purchase different-colored ties for Donkey Kong.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/conjecture-countdown-5-days-to-go/">Conjecture Countdown: 5 days to go</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 10:40:00 EST. The official Japanese site for Nintendo's Wii has updated again, with more of those experience videos they've made us so <a href="http://us.wii.com/experience_gallery.jsp">accustomed</a> to. This time around, we get to catch an <a href="http://wii.com/jp/movies/dktj-01-jp-a/">eye</a> <a href="http://wii.com/jp/movies/dktj-01-jp-b/">full</a> of people playing a game that has, to be honest, failed to really excite us. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/dk-bongo-blast-fires-off-the-screens/">Screens</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/completely-unexciting-dk-jet-videos/">video</a> alike have failed to do that. <br /><br />Surely, all of you don't feel the same, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/dk-jet-experience-videos/">DK Jet experience videos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Jun 2007 17:30:00 EST. For a game from Nintendo, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/new-dk-bongo-game-does-away-with-pesky-bongos/">Donkey Kong Bongo Blast</a> doesn't give us a lot of hope, at least in video form. Watch the spastic drum-roll gesture to start Donkey Kong racing in addition to other control ... um ... <em>schemes</em>. (And we were sick of the drum roll after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/raymanravingrabbids">Rayman Rabbids</a>, even with the reward of kicking a bunny or launching one off a train cart.)<br /><br />Oh, waggle, prove us wrong.<br /><br />See the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/todays-please-play-play-better-in-person-video-dk-bongo-blast/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's please-play-play-better-in-person video: DK Bongo Blast</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/todays-please-play-play-better-in-person-video-dk-bongo-blast/">Today's please-play-play-better-in-person video: DK Bongo Blast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Jun 2007 00:00:00 EST. The former <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamecube">GameCube</a> title's official site has several videos illustrating its new control scheme with the Wii remote and nunchuck -- drum both to tear through the course at breakneck speeds of 30 mph, waggle with only one hand to veer right into a wall, and put them back down when you decide to play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=mario+kart"><em>Mario Kart DS</em></a> instead!<br /><br />There are a lot of movies and sections at the site that haven't been revealed yet, so there's still plenty of opportunities for <em>DK Jet</em> to impress us before its June 28th release in Japan. If you listen to the ridiculous noises Donkey Kong makes with every jump, however, it sounds like the depressed groan of a gorilla who just wants to go home. Throw a barrel past the post break for one of the demonstration clips we grabbed.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/completely-unexciting-dk-jet-videos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Completely unexciting DK Jet videos</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/15/completely-unexciting-dk-jet-videos/">Completely unexciting DK Jet videos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jun 2007 14:00:00 EST. This corroborates an <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/784/784665p1.html">IGN report</a> to the same effect, and is also totally, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totally_Rad">totally rad</a>. Here's the full list of Nintendo's planned 2007 releases. <em>Donkey Kong Taru Jet Race</em> is slated for June 28, and the rest are all "2007":<br />

Keep checking with us for news of the inevitable <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/delay">delays</a> of about half of these. Seriously, that's a <em>lot</em> of first-party Nintendo games for just half a year or so. Aw, we just made ourselves sad with our own skepticism. Still, if half of this stuff does get released in Japan this year, it'll be great news and do a pretty good job of ending any <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/30/wii-warm-up-drought-or-growing-pains/">drought</a> that may or may not be happening.<br /><br /><font color="red">Update:</font> fixed some italics and formatting.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/the-big-three-are-coming-in-2007-to-japan/">'The big three' ARE coming in 2007 (to Japan)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 May 2007 11:25:00 EST. Players will shake their remotes and nunchucks at the same time to accelerate, rattle one of the controllers when steering to the left or right, and lift both pieces to jump. <br /><br />This modified control setup makes a lot of sense, but does it sound fun? In our opinion, this seems like it would have been better left on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamecube">GameCube</a>. It'd be appreciated if developer Paon would give us the choice to use our old bongos, but with no mention of the option yet for the, it's doubtful.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/16/dk-bongo-blasts-bothersome-controls/">DK Bongo Blast's bothersome controls</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Apr 2007 10:45:00 EST. We never made a huge <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/donkeykong"><em>Donkey Kong</em></a> mural in the windows of one of the college's buildings using nothing but Post-Its.
