We were almost certain that the above Dead to Rights: Retribution trailer Namco Bandai recently sent us was a joke. Not because of its constant depictions of brutal dog-on-man violence (which, admittedly, is kind of hilarious), but because the content of the trailer is obviously ripped off from a recent film you're probably familiar with.

Don't believe us? Check out the trailer above, then check out the film trailer after the jump. The stark similarities should be made abundantly clear.
Continue reading Dead to Rights: Retribution trailer is full of canine plagiarism

Dead to Rights: Retribution trailer is full of canine plagiarism originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 07 Apr 2010 15:40:00 EST. A Michigan woman nearly killed her dog when she accidentally struck it in the temple with a Wii Remote. Kathy White was playing Wii Sports' bowling with her daughter when she made the motion to roll her virtual ball and, as she puts it, hit the dog and "killed him instantly." The dog, Ozzy, was not moving or breathing. She called her neighbor -- who we're guessing must have some veterinary training -- and she revived the dog using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

Ozzy was then taken to the real vet, who diagnosed the dog with "severe brain swelling" due to cardiac arrest. We've heard of Wiinjuries before (both possibly real and fake), but this is the first instance of potential "caninicide" we're aware of. Check out a television news report regarding the incident after the break.

[Via Nintendo Wii Fanboy]
Continue reading Wiimote strike 'killed' dog, saved by neighbor's mouth-to-mouth

Wiimote strike 'killed' dog, saved by neighbor's mouth-to-mouth originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 16:02:00 EST. Ozzy is one lucky pup. When the White family got a Wii this Christmas, it was all fun and games until little Ozzy's life was in danger. See, the dog was hanging around the humans, watching them bowl in Wii Sports, when he jumped up in the way and caught a Wiimote directly to the temple, killing the dog instantly. The Whites called their neighbor Pene over and she gave the dog mouth-to-mouth, saving its life. Over the next few weeks following the incident, Ozzy has thankfully started to mend and be his old self again.

There's a video of the segment shown on the local NBC affiliate after the break. Cute doggy, wouldn't you say?
Continue reading Wiimote kills dog, neighbor brings it back

Wiimote kills dog, neighbor brings it back originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 14:36:00 EST. We're already well acquainted with the idea of Wiis (and their remotes) injuring humans and TV sets. Now the UK's Telegraph is reporting that game systems are also causing a veritable epidemic of injuries to pets. A survey of 3,000 British pet owners shows that a full 10% of pets were injured by a Wii , while 8.3% sustained PlayStation-related injuries and 5.8% got injured by a DS.

Even accounting for some overlap between systems, those numbers would seem to suggest that British veterinarians are being overrun by little critters who chewed through component cables, swallowed portable systems, tripped on controller cords and the like. The numbers are much less worrying, though, when you consider the source for the survey: pet insurance provider PetPlan. Reminds us of that used car dealer who told us rust-proofing would increase the resale value of our car by 50% -- just not that credible. We still got the rust-proofing, though. When it comes to our Fiat, our motto is: better safe than sorry.
Survey: Game systems causing cat-astrophic pet injuries originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 11:55:00 EST.
It's a bit like the drums, apparently.

The dog suit, easily the most non-instrumental of all Wii Music's instruments, is the subject of the latest "Today's Instrument" video. Even though the novelty would probably wear thin quickly, we found this video to be quite cute and funny. Not that we'd share such a view with any of the commentors at GameTrailers, whose responses to this are both wonderfully over-the-top and angsty. "I... HATE... THIS... SO... MUCH..." writes jaymichigan, quivering with rage. "I've lost the will to live," proclaims sarahshrew2, not at all dramatically. "Nintendo... My vision of you has now forever been changed from the KING of video games, to WORTHLESS IDIOTS," bawls robsco.

You get the idea.

Before you roll your eyes and scroll past this post in search of non Petz news, we want to make sure you know that unlike the DS and PC versions, Petz Catz 2 isn't your garden-variety shovelware pet sim.

It's more of a light RPG adventure in which you, a kitten, set out to retrieve a magical top hat from a mean wolf. Of course, along the way, you'll have several different minigames and side quests which you can pounce into, instead. Also, you can put hats on cats.

If that short description -- or the prospect of adorning cats with hats -- interests you at all, Amazon has the game on sale for a super cheap $7.99 until the end of the day. If you're more of a puppy person, you can also pick up the palette-swapped canine complement, Petz Dogz 2, for only $9.99.

[Via CAG]

Read - Petz Catz 2 for $7.99
Read - Petz Dogz 2 for $9.99

Amazon unbags Catz 2 sale originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 May 2008 11:45:00 EST. Stupid plushies, with their cute little faces and soft, fuzzy bodies. Ugh. Hate 'em! What's there to like about squishable little animals anyway? You know what we need? Uncute plushies. Thankfully, someone is on the cutting edge, ready with the future of stuffed toys. Resident Evil fans, pay attention, for we present: the zombie dog plush, courtesy of mjrahabim's Etsy marketplace. On one site, it's a cute little puppy. On the other? A skeletal undead killing machine. It's dual use! Each puppy is custom-made (which means they may vary from plush to plush) for $25.

And it still manages to be cute. Dammit.
Because regular plushies are way too cute originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 05 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. Man. There's a lot we could say about this Duck Hunt tribute tattoo. We could say it's just awesome; after all, it's pretty well done, artistically, and we approve of the subject, as far as video game ink goes. But the placement is somewhat questionable. If you're the owner, you have to wonder just what sort of message this sends. Is it an "aim here" sort of deal? Is that really what you want to convey with your body art, considering? We all want to shoot that damned dog. And if you're, uh, in an intimate situation with the owner of this patch of skin, that's got to be pretty demeaning. That dog haunted gamers around the world with his laughter.

Yep, we can't help but wonder if this isn't going to be something the "lucky" tattooed individual is going to regret one day. Let's hope it's not a permanent inking and just happens to be drawn on.

[Via GoNintendo]
Duck Hunt tattoo showcases love for dogs, shooting, mockery originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 07 Mar 2008 20:00:00 EST. As you can see above, its mouth claps open and shut as it tries to consume the virtual representation of a real human being. We just fear that once the dog puts two and two together, it'll realize that attacking Miis in the real world is much more satisfying. Slider! Come on, people! Any other idea is lacking any kind of reasonable evidence to support it, in light of Slider's diligence to his job (he never misses a Saturday night show!) and his knack for sticking it to the man. Not to mention how great the little guy looks on a bath towel!

Actually, maybe we're willing to entertain some of the entrants. Like, the dog in Duck Hunt, for example. He's a pretty important mutt in the gaming world, so we can understand his inclusion. Oh, and Link's wolf form in Twilight Princess is another good addition. And let's not forget the Nintendogs themselves!

What do you guys think? What are they missing in this list? What were you surprised to see? If you have a photo and a story to match it with, send both to thedslife at dsfanboy dot com.

As every successful endeavor requires an unexceptionable sequel, we've created just that with this installment of The DS Life! We're revisiting last week's theme of "Dear Santa" notes, promising a production packed with more laughs, more special effects, and most importantly, more letters. We actually can't guarantee those first two points, but we're almost absolutely sure we'll deliver on that third one!

To streamline the gift-wishing process, the kindergarteners at Buckeye Valley North Elementary were provided with crayons and a simple form to illustrate their hearts' desires. What follows are a few of the results from the school's "Dear Santa" project.
Continue reading The DS Life: Dear Santa 2: Judgment Day

The DS Life: Dear Santa 2: Judgment Day originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 20:00:00 EST.
Rather than discriminate against either dog or cat fans, Ubisoft is satisfying pet lovers of both persuasions with two versions of their latest game -- Puppy and the Magical Hat and Kitten and the Magical Hat -- both of which are hella cute. They're essentially the same release, the only visible differences being a palette swap between the two animals and switched sound effects (e.g. barks and meows). Oh, and instead of using a dog bone as a pointer, Kitten and the Magical Hat uses a fish skeleton. Cats don't give a damn about dog bones.

Other than that, they're indistinguishable, as evidenced by the near-identical trailers and screenshots at their official sites. They both have the same outfits to dress your pet in, the same dolphin-riding action, and the same play-air-hockey-with-a-lion minigame! We can forgive developer Yuke's for taking the easy route with this production, though, as the pair of titles really seems like a lot more fun and full-featured than the usual pet training shovelware we see. Dash (or pounce) past the break for some comparison screens and the K-9 Advantix commercial we referenced in our article image.
Continue reading Cats in hats (dogs, too)

Cats in hats (dogs, too) originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Nov 2007 21:00:00 EST. Give a cat one of those carpet-covered scratching posts? Sure, lots of us do it, but it's hard to be mad at them when later you find them sharpening their claws in the middle of the dining room rug. The similar nubby texture gets them every time. So it shouldn't be much of a surprise what happened to the Labrador one Colorado family allowed to chew on an old television remote. Not only did the dog eat it, but once that was down, he turned on the next remote-like object in his sights: a Wii remote.

Which he swallowed whole.

The poor pooch started spitting up blood, and once at the vet, vomited up bits of the original remote ... but there was still a mass in his stomach visible on an X-ray. It was only then that the Wiimote-swallowing was revealed. Luckily, the dog was able to expel the controller after having his tummy massaged, and he's just fine after an overnight stay at the doctor.

The Wii in question belonged to the family's son, who was punished for leaving the controller out where the dog could get to it ... but who's going to punish everyone else for allowing the dog to chew on electronics in the first place? Sharp plastic bits probably don't digest so well, after all.

On the lighter side, now we all have an excuse to tell jokes about the horrors of dogs chewing on your Wii.

[Via Kotaku]
Wiimote bites dog originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Sep 2007 18:00:00 EST. If that's true, what could have lead the hound into chewing up the pet simulation's cart?

Maybe the puppy just grew tired of sinking his teeth into Jake's shoes, homework, and remote controls? Or perhaps Norman took the game's "Best Friends" label to heart, biting down on the newcomer in a fit of jealousy. We happen to think that this was his revenge on Jake for dressing him up in silly outfits and posting the photos on the internet. Molyneux stresses not to scrutinize the graphics and that only the dog is worth looking at in the demo's current state. Overlooking the work left to be done, the dog seems to be well animated and deliver a lot of emotion; hopefully this companion will add more depth to the game.

See the dog demo after the break.
Continue reading Today's best friendiest video: Fable 2 dog

Today's best friendiest video: Fable 2 dog originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Mar 2007 00:00:00 EST. He's pretty old now, but dog-sitting when he was younger caused me to change gaming habits to accommodate. For example, any games with dogs or cats in them (or similar animal sounds e.g. Final Fantasy) would cause him to flip out. The same holds true for a cairn terrier I dog-sit. While playing Zelda: Twilight Princess the dachshund didn't go all out like the dog in the video above, but he did perk his head up and looked around feverishly to see what was going on. Any humorous animal stories out there? Have a cat that flips out with the Wii pointer on the screen? Do you also have a dog who howls along like he's wolf Link? After the break see how not to treat your pets -- nobody likes to get yelled at, not even Nintendogs.
Continue reading Pets get confused by video games

Pets get confused by video games originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 31 Dec 2006 01:00:00 EST. However, the new title, A Lovely Puppy, seems more mini-game heavy, unlike the gotta-play approach that Nintendogs takes. All the same elements are there -- feeding, training, playing -- but these puppies want to make sure you can solve puzzles, too. Also, instead of photorealism, the Lovely Puppy game utilizes a soft, pastel 2D style reminiscent of another upcoming game, Love Love Hamster. A Lovely Puppy features 18 dog types out of the box, and you can even choose the type of coat.

It's nice to see a different approach rather than a direct clone. Though we have very few details right now, we think this is one title that will eventually see a worldwide release. No one can resist the power of the puppy.

Check out some other screens after the jump.
Continue reading Lovely puppies are no Nintendogs

Lovely puppies are no Nintendogs originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 12 Sep 2006 14:43:00 EST. What kind of friend would do such a thing to a DS Lite? I guess the dog in question just enjoys the taste of plastic, or its owner's salty tears as they almost certainly hit the carpet in a flood when he arrived home to find his beloved gaming system destroyed. Nintendo, who were all kinds of understanding, decided they'd repair it for only 50 bucks.

The real question, however, is not how kind is Nintendo, but rather should the owner of said DS Lite keep the dog and place his expensive toys out of reach of the bundle of gnashing teeth and fur that comprises his K-9 companion or take that puppy down to the pound for an extended stay?

[Thanks Julian!]
Dogs love the taste of DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 17 Jul 2006 09:00:00 EST. It's Monday. Monday's suck. You're stuck at work (or school) and it sucks. Just remember it could be worse. You could be this guy:

"i opened the door to my apartment the other day and found this..."

The 360 looks unharmed, thankfully. I have to say I empathize with the dog, though. If I was forced to stare at a 360 for hours, knowing full well that I didn't have thumbs and would never be able to play it, I'd go crazy, too. Hit the read link for a picture of the culprit.

Oh, and if you really dislike your job, don't forget that we're hiring.
Dog left alone with 360: carnage ensues originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Jul 2006 09:30:00 EST.
