Just in case the thing that prevented you from buying Rocksmith on Steam was the lack of Maroon 5 songs, we'll just remove that musical obstacle for you right here and now. Valve reports that "Misery," "She Will Be Loved," and "Harder to Breathe" have all been added to the game.

You can buy each song for $2.99, or pick them all up together for $7.99. Once purchased, you can play through the songs with a standard electric or bass guitar, and each song also adds a new authentic tone to play with on the game's Amp mode. Sweet Maroon 5-style haircuts are, unfortunately, sold separately.
Finally, those Maroon 5 songs you wanted are available in Rocksmith originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 May 2013 23:15:00 EST. The next DLC pack for the shooter - dubbed 'Uprising' if you didn't catch it - lands on April 16 on the Xbox 360 and includes five maps and one new "zombie adventure."

New maps for the content pack include Magma, Encore, Vertigo, and Studio - all teased in the video above. "Uprising is the most fan-centric DLC package we've ever created," David Vonderhaar, game design director at Treyarch claims in the video.

Adding to that fan service is "a reimagining of the classic map Firing Range," and a new "zombie adventure" called 'Mob of the Dead.' In the new zombie story, players are trapped in a zombie-infested Alcatraz as four prohibition-era mobsters, played by Hollywood badasses: Ray Liotta, Chazz Palminteri, Joey Pantoliano and Michael Madsen. In a "new twist" on the zombie mode, "if a player becomes an unfortunate victim, 'Mob of the Dead's' new feature known as 'Purgatory' sends players into the afterlife." No further details, beyond new challenges and a "unique experience," were revealed about the zombie mode's 'Purgatory' feature.

PlayStation 3 and PC players should expect the standard one-month wait time for their shot at the content, due to the timed-exclusivity agreement between Microsoft and Activision.
Continue reading Black Ops 2 'Uprising' DLC adds new maps, 'zombie adventure' on April 16

Black Ops 2 'Uprising' DLC adds new maps, 'zombie adventure' on April 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 13:13:00 EST.

One of the reasons that the Mass Effect series has been one of the most-discussed franchises of the generation is because the games are many different things to many different people. They're science-fiction epics. They're cover-based shooters. They're dating sims. They're long-term serialized stories. They're slowly wandering through cities in space, engaging in long conversations. They're tough battles against overwhelming odds.

The core divide is between the self-serious saga of Shepard versus the Reapers that the franchise attempts to convey, and the entertaining - if slightly goofy - glorious mess that some perceive it to be. The final story-based expansion for the series, the recently-released 'Citadel' add-on, demonstrates how big that divide can be and then it bridges the gap.

Gallery: Mass Effect 3 - Citadel

Continue reading Mass Effect 3's 'Citadel' DLC demonstrates the franchise's messy, wonderful soul

Mass Effect 3's 'Citadel' DLC demonstrates the franchise's messy, wonderful soul originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:45:00 EST. "Bandits beware, a new vault hunter is coming. More mayhem awaits."

Details for the second add-on character were scarce, much like the Pandora wasteland; however, the teaser (which you can view above) leads us to believe the new character is melee-focused. Gearbox franchise director Matt Armstrong wouldn't reveal the exact release for the DLC during the panel but added, "DLC is announced on a very tight schedule, and I don't think you'll have to wait long until you see that character."

Update: Gearbox has clarified to Joystiq that the upcoming DLC character is not included as part of the Borderlands 2 Season Pass. The season pass will cost players $39.99 and enable access to the game's first five DLC packs, which will include a new playable alien species, along with lots of new weapons, vehicles, missions, and other rewards. Plus, pass buyers get two bonus items: a digital Hellbug combat cap, and an extra Lock Box (which is a sealed container in the game for a chance at another item).

The $39.99 is in addition to the game's initial purchase price ($59.99, or $99.99 for the deluxe edition). Defiance won't have a subscription fee, and this price is 20 percent off what the DLC will cost in total.

The Defiance game will be launched on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on April 2, while the TV show will start on April 15.
Continue reading Trion offering a Defiance season pass with DLC, new species, and more

Trion offering a Defiance season pass with DLC, new species, and more originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Mar 2013 01:00:00 EST. On the contrary, producer Shereif Fattouh seemed completely optimistic about the game's reception and its place within the Dead Space universe during a recent preview of the upcoming 'Awakened' add-on content.

"Whenever you release a title, you're gonna get the positives and negatives. We as a dev team are really proud of the game we made. We feel it was very true to the franchise and we're excited to put it out," Fattouh told Joystiq. "There are people that have criticisms, and that's everybody's right. For us, we put a lot of our heart and soul into the game and we feel it's enjoyable."

Fattouh's description of Awakened paints the picture of a campaign add-on that hews closer to the spirit of previous entries in the series. The 'creep factor' was indeed high in our hands-on demo, which sends Isaac back to the CMS Terra Nova's Conning Tower, after it's been overrun by a Necromorph-worshipping cult of scarification practitioners. Strange symbols and unsettling altars that mash together human corpses with Necro parts line the walls.

"We had a vision for what we wanted to make with our DLC," Fattouh explained. "The nice thing about it is it kind of married into what some of the more hardcore community guys were asking for. One of the coolest features of the Firaxis-developed remake is the ability to customize the names of individual soldiers that make up your army of alien-stompers, fostering a strong connection that adds weight to a soldier's permanent demise. It's unexpected, then, that for its first downloadable content in the rebooted XCOM universe - dubbed 'Slingshot' - Firaxis has decided to create a completely fictional character as its star.

Zhang is a member of the Chinese Triad who defects over to XCOM when he comes to recognize the magnitude of the threat that the world faces. He's introduced in Slingshot's first mission via cutscene, a heavily scarred, besuited tough guy who stands as motionless as the Foo Dog statues that surround him.

The Triad defector is a civilian in the first mission, a neutered unit that must be escorted by XCOM forces to a nearby evac location situated close to your Chinese cemetery rendezvous point. Alien forces attack from all sides, same as it ever was, and only tactical thinking sees you through. You'll probably think more than once "Why can't I just hand this Triad fellow a gun and tell him to point it at the invaders?"

That opportunity comes later, as Zhang's defector status puts him on the outs with his former bosses. Complete the first Slingshot mission and your Triad buddy joins XCOM as a Heavy. He's just like any other soldier save for the fact that his name and appearance are locked. You don't even need to bring him along on the two Slingshot missions that follow, though his high stats might compel you to do so anyway.

Gallery: XCOM: Enemy Unknown 'Slingshot' DLC (11/30/12)

Continue reading Assaulting an alien battleship as a Triad defector in XCOM: Enemy Unknown's 'Slingshot' DLC

Assaulting an alien battleship as a Triad defector in XCOM: Enemy Unknown's 'Slingshot' DLC originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Nov 2012 08:00:00 EST. But who needs to stop and smell the roses when you can inhale the sweet fumes of a 1965 Shelby Cobra or that 2012 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon? The DLC pack, which includes bass tracks and teaching functions for either a standard 6-string guitar or a 4-string bass guitar, hit Xbox 360 and PS3 earlier this August.

In addition to content for the game's current songs, the Bass Expansion allows you to access bass information for any DLC songs in the future, so it's quite an investment. The Bass Expansion will be available for $29.99, the same initial price as the console versions. One important bass-playing thing it won't teach you is how to look cooler than the lead guitarist while you play. Better get started working on that right now.
Rocksmith's Bass Expansion comes to PC on October 16 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Sep 2012 02:00:00 EST. The content collection (which arrived on Xbox 360 back in the beginning of September) includes five different maps, called Decommission, Off Shore, Gulch, Boardwalk, and Parish. Call of Duty Elite subscribers will be able to grab the last three levels a day early, on October 9.

This is, of course, the last scheduled content pack for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, seeing as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is due out just about a month later. At that point, presumably, those Elite subscriptions will renew, and the cycle of of constant DLC for the biggest shooter series in the world will start up all over again.
Modern Warfare 3's last content collection arriving on PS3 and PC October 10 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Sep 2012 10:00:00 EST. Hearthfire enables players to build their own home, create additions to said home, and help raise children. Those rooms can be profession-specific - for instance, a room dedicated to herbalism. The joys of domestic life!

"From a simple one-room cottage to a sprawling compound complete with armory, alchemy laboratory, and more," Bethesda said of the DLC. "Choose your land, customize your house, guard it from unwanted visitors, and turn your house into a home by adopting children." Apparently, in the fantasy world of Skyrim, houses aren't homes without children.

Hearthfire will be available September 4 on Xbox 360 for 400 Microsoft Points ($5), no other platforms are mentioned at this time. Skyrim's previous DLC, Dawnguard, took around a month to make its way to PC, but the PS3 version experienced some hiccups.
Skyrim's 'Hearthfire' expansion tends the home September 4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Aug 2012 10:16:00 EST. Like, back in May. Sorry about that, y'all! Nothing to see here! Move right along!

When Skyrim's "Dawnguard" DLC was first outed by a trademark filing back in March, we knew little aside from the name - references to the Dawnguard could be found in Skyrim, but only vague ones. It wasn't even clear that the filing was for DLC at the time - nor is it clear today that a recently unearthed trademark filing by Bethesda parent company Zenimax Media for "Hearthfire" is Skyrim's next DLC.

But it sure smells like it. The term "Hearthfire" (or "Heartfire") correlates to the ninth month in The Elder Scrolls' world of Tamriel, as well as a set of books in the 2920 series. Bethesda is staying mum for now, telling VentureBeat that the studio, "does not comment on trademark filings." The filing was made back in May, so it's always possible that the idea has since passed.

The filing is definitely game software, per the description: "Computer game software for use with computers and video game consoles; downloadable computer game software offered via the internet and wireless devices." There's also a wholly unremarkable image alongside the trademark filing, seen above.
Bethesda trademarks 'Hearthfire,' which is totally a thing from Skryim originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Aug 2012 09:00:00 EST. This new system abandons the current method of in-store DLC purchases, which would provide users with a code used to redeem content on their home consoles.

Speaking with Wired, GameStop president Tony Bartel said his company's new platform would bypass that step. "There was a lot of friction about putting in a [25-digit] code... with a controller," he said.

The way GameStop's new system works is ingenious in its simplicity: customers will receieve an email after purchasing the content in stores, which includes a link that be used to begin downloading the content on their connected machines.

The content delivery system is exclusive to GameStop and is only slated to launch for the Xbox 360; however, Bartel sees other platforms adopting the system in the future, saying the concept can be used with any partner on any platform.
Gamestop adding auto-downloads to in-store DLC purchases originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 16 Aug 2012 23:59:00 EST. In the comments, a lot of people pointed out that Yuffie's sidequest (and indeed, Yuffie herself) would probably be downloadable content in the modern era of video games. This, I thought to myself, is probably true.

I brought up that point with Polygon's Phil Kollar the other day, and we ended up chatting at some length about DLC. What other classic RPG bonuses, I wondered, would probably be downloadable content today? The two of us had a few ideas (full credit to Phil for reminding me of this idea). Let's explore, shall we?
Continue reading Five RPG extras that would probably be DLC in 2012

Five RPG extras that would probably be DLC in 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Aug 2012 20:30:00 EST. Yet, my reaction to each piece of news was quite different, despite my similar feelings about both games. Hearing that I could finally play "Dawnguard" on my PC got me excited that there'd be more Skyrim when I got to it, because that was a game about exploring and finding new things. Mass Effect 3's "Leviathan," on the other hand, held no appeal for me. The entire third game was an emotional ending (although not always inspiring good emotions). Maybe I'd get excited doing another quest built into the middle of the game if I ran a new Shepard through all three games, but there's no appeal for me now.

I spent last weekend playing the Dragon Age: Origins expansions, which I'd left on my hard drive for far too long following the completion of the initial game. As I worked on my "Awakening" and pressed through more of Dragon Age's add-ons, the difference in form crystallized in my head. Role-playing games have specific issues to deal with involving add-on content, and by trying a wide variety of different strategies, Dragon Age: Origins demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of those plans.

Gallery: Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening (Retail Expansion)

Continue reading Remember Dragon Age: Origins or 'How to keep a good RPG going'

Remember Dragon Age: Origins or 'How to keep a good RPG going' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 10 Aug 2012 18:30:00 EST. The Chaos Pack - previously half-detailed - brings three Face Off maps and four Spec-Ops missions, as well as a new mode, dubbed "Special Ops Chaos Mode." It's a wave-based survival mode, albeit with a Spec-Ops twist. The whole shebang launches for Xbox 360 on August 9, with PS3 and PC versions launching later on.

In September, MW3 players on 360 get the "Final Assault" pack, which adds five multiplayer maps ("Gulch," "Offshore," "Boardwalk," "Decommission," and "Parish"), two of which are already available on 360. Again, this content arrives on PS3 and PC at a later (unknown) date. As Activision community blog One of Swords points out, Call of Duty's Elite season ends with more content than it originally promised, which seems pretty boss if you ask us. But don't go getting your precedents miscalibrated, as this may not be the case in future years.
Modern Warfare 3's final two DLC packs fully reconnoitered originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 12:40:00 EST. A letter purportedly sent to GameStop employees both thanks them for their "hard work" in snapping up pre-orders of AC3 from customers, and, more importantly, warns them of an upcoming "season pass concept" for this October's game.

"We are currently in the process of creating a complementary development team that will begin working on post-launch episodic content to continue the Game of the Year experience that Assassin's Creed 3 will undoubtedly deliver," reads the letter. It's not exactly uncommon for Ubisoft to support its games post-launch, and the AC franchise is no exception - each of the last three AC games, starting with AC2, were bolstered by post-launch content.

Precedents set by previous "season pass" offerings dictates that a variety of DLC (multiplayer, single-player, or both) would be packaged and sold ahead of its launch, giving the buyer an aggregate discount across all of it. Ubisoft enacted such a scheme with the last AC title, Revelations, albeit only via PC. Still, neither Ubisoft nor Gamestop can confirm this letter or a "Season Pass" for AC3. And no, DLC for Assassin's Creed 3 has not yet been announced, outside of the ambiguous "special DLC" heading exclusively to PlayStation 3 players.
Rumor: Assassin's Creed 3 getting a 'Season Pass' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 11:30:00 EST. Beyond that, however, no one's saying a peep about the game. Lest you forget, three more DLC packs are planned for DICE's last game, Battlefield 3, and that apparently means DICE isn't ready to talk Battlefield 4 just yet.

"There is no further Battlefield 4 news at this point," reads a post from DICE on the Battlefield 4 subpage. "With the Back to Karkand and Close Quarters expansion packs already out, Armored Kill around the corner, and End Game and Aftermath still on the horizon, we're looking forward to many more hours of gameplay with you, and can't wait to see the stories you will tell through Battlelog and player created videos."

With Medal of Honor's 2010 reboot, EA set out to match its competition's annual shooter, Call of Duty. EA's Los Angeles-based Danger Close studio is in charge of EA's Medal of Honor franchise, apparently trading off years with DICE and the Battlefield franchise. The two franchises currently share DICE's Frostbite 2.0 game engine, and Danger Close's next MoH employs DICE's Battlelog system as well. Thus far, EA has yet to best Activision's Call of Duty powerhouse (in terms of sales and critical reception) with its two shooter franchises.
DICE vows continued support for Battlefield 3 in light of Battlefield 4 announcement originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 11:00:00 EST. Eight songs will be available for 99 cents each (the list is after the break), with the purchase option available from a link in the 3DS game's title screen.

Square Enix did not date the release of the DLC, and it doesn't appear to be up yet. We'll find out when the songs are officially expected online. This is officially the first 3DS downloadable content in North America (or it will be when it actually shows up).

While you wait for that - and you probably don't have your copy yet anyway - enjoy the new launch trailer above.
Continue reading First Theatrhythm DLC for North America includes eight new old songs

First Theatrhythm DLC for North America includes eight new old songs originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 03 Jul 2012 16:00:00 EST. The "Local Justice Pack" adds some new situations into which you can throw the gruff, sad hero, including the "55th Battalion HQ" map, Imperial Palace and Departure maps for deathmatch and Payne Killer modes, a new M4 Assault Rifle, and a new São Paulo Police faction.

In response to missing the original June release date for this pack, Rockstar is drinking heavily. Oh, wait, that's Max. Rockstar is discounting the DLC for its first week, to 480 Microsoft Points or $5.99; afterward, it'll go back up to 640 MSP/$7.99.

All pre-order exclusive DLC will also be up for sale on July 3, or free for Rockstar Pass owners.
Max Payne 3 serves up 'Local Justice' DLC July 3 on PS3 and Xbox, July 17 on PC originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2012 12:11:00 EST. As the "Road of Devastation" was about surviving against impossible, zombie-filled odds, "Arcade" is about modifying those odds in your favor. That plays out in-game via checkpoint-based revival and the ability to choose a difficulty level (other than "devastating," of course).

The Arcade modification appears to be a free update to Dead Nation, but we won't be sure until PlayStation Network updates later today and the content goes live. It appears that The Scorchers are back, as a listing on Europe's PEGI game rating website outs something named "Rage: The Scorchers" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Siliconera spotted the listing and dated it to less than a week ago. For its part, Bethesda hasn't offered a comment, though we've reached out for more info. Thus far, Rage has zero DLC beyond a day-one "Anarchy Edition" bonus. Ahead of the game's launch last year, id Software's Tim Willits told GamesIndustry.biz, "Our immediate plans, of course, are some DLC for Rage," so it stands to reason that DLC of some form for the game is still planned.
'Rage: The Scorchers' pops up on PEGI, smells like DLC to us originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Jun 2012 13:15:00 EST. "Premium" costs $50 one time, not to mention a variety of other in-game weapons and dog tags, as well as a handful of "enhanced" Battlelog features (such as resetting stats). The piece doesn't mention getting access to the game's five announced map packs, but that seems like an odd omission considering the $50 asking price. It does note, via EA vp Patrick Soderlund, that Premium offers, "savings since access to content included in the membership package would cost $25 more if it was purchased separately."

Additionally, the membership gives users two weeks of advanced access to the variety of unreleased DLC packs - except this perk only applies if you're a PlayStation 3 customer. Much like Call of Duty's adherence to an exclusivity window on DLC for Xbox 360, Battlefield 3 is locked to a similar tryst with Sony's PlayStation 3. This means that users who pay for the Premium service on either Xbox 360 or PC won't get that same level of early access, which is ... pretty bizarre to us.

The piece doesn't make clear when the service launches, but the perviously leaked memo and yesterday's leaked trailer indicated it would launch as soon as today. The piece also notes that Battlefield 3 has thus far moved 15 million units. Not too shabby! We expect to hear even more about Premium during EA's press conference this afternoon.

Update: Further details of Battlefield 3 Premium have since been officially revealed by EA during today's press conference. The game's upcoming DLC pack "Close Quarters" also got a date and price: June 4, £11.99/€14.99/AU$23.95.

As you might imagine, someone at Sony quickly realized the issue and pulled the info ... but not before Google Cache caught it in its icy, permanent grip. Thankfully, developer Ronimo has revealed that both the first patch and downloadable character are on the way. As you can see in the teaser image above, it's a lady, which makes her the first female Awesomenaut. We don't know anything officially, though she appears to be wielding some sort of energy ball, has a Medusa hairdo and is clearly riding a hoverboard.

Furthermore, Awesomenauts' first update is coming down the pipe. The update will include balance fixes suggested by community members, though Ronimo adds that "so far the consensus appears that the game is already fairly well balanced, which is great." Indeed. Patch notes for the update should be coming next week.

Finally, Ronimo states that the launch went smoothly, with over half a million games played since launch, though some users have reported connection errors. The studio is working to resolve the issue, which seems to be related to NAT settings, and advises affected players to reset their routers and consoles as a temporary fix.

Gallery: Awesomenauts (New Character)

First Awesomenauts DLC teased, update incoming originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 May 2012 20:00:00 EST. The DLC runs 800 MS Points or $10 on 360 and PS3 (respectively), and the PC version ... well, it seems not to exist. We've asked Ubi what's up with that.

The pack contains an unknown number of multiplayer maps, a new co-op "Guerrilla Mode" map, six new weapons, and an additional multiplayer mode. Ubi unfortunately hasn't shown anything of the content aside from the single image you see above, but presumably we'll hear more after the game's launch.
Continue reading Ghost Recon: Future Soldier's 'Arctic Strike' DLC due in July

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier's 'Arctic Strike' DLC due in July originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 May 2012 11:45:00 EST.
