The game, due March 14, takes the film's prehistoric family and throws them into a caveman sim, apparently. You can hunt and gather, catch weird creatures, and cultivate your own little patch of the Paleolithic Age.

The Croods isn't Rovio's first movie tie-in, but it is the studio's first one outside of Angry Birds. Commercially speaking, that makes this game a whole different kettle of fish - or birds - or cave-birds. Maybe they should've gone with cave-birds.
Angry Birds dev Rovio making tie-in game for DreamWorks' The Croods originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Mar 2013 12:33:00 EST. Michael Keaton will play the role of a "reclusive and eccentric" race organizer and host, one that invites drivers from around the world to participate in some sort of underground supercar thing.

Keaton joins Kid Cudi and Aaron Paul, among others, as those confirmed for the movie's cast. Still no word yet on who will play the car, but our fake sources tell us that Paul will likely be blasting around the country in a talking Volvo station wagon voiced by either Ellen McLain or Jennifer Hale.
Michael Keaton joins Need for Speed movie cast originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Feb 2013 17:15:00 EST. Paul has won two Emmys for his role in Breaking Bad, and has also starred in The Last House on the Left and HBO's Big Love.

Scott Waugh, a veteran stuntman and director of Act of Valor, is directing the movie, George and John Gatnis are writing the screenplay, and EA vice president Patrick O'Brien is one of the producers.

"The film adaptation will be a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise." the press release reads. "In Need for Speed, the cars are hot, the racing is intense and the story keeps players at the edge of their seat."

While we don't want Paul to be typecast, it'd be pretty cool if he drives an RV for part of the movie. Or even just a blue car. Can you give us that, Dreamworks?
Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul playing lead in Need for Speed movie originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Oct 2012 19:00:00 EST. (And provided nothing derails that fast track the project was put on last month.)

The movie, directed by ex-stuntman Scott Waugh, (whose last name sounds like the noise a person would make while performing stunts), is not directly based on any specific game in Need for Speed's long history as a franchise. We're not willing to say we're optimistic for the film, but we do appreciate the continued excuses to use our beloved Mystery Science Theater 3000 silhouette.
Need for Speed film debuts on Feb. 7, 2014 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 11 Jul 2012 19:00:00 EST. As it turns out, Dreamworks has taken the bait and will be fast-tracking the project for a 2014 release, the company announced today.

The screenplay, penned by brothers George and John Gatins, is not based on any specific game in the franchise, but rather the series as a whole, which means that the movie will have cars in it and be called "Need for Speed." It'll be directed by Scott Waugh, who directed Act of Valor and did a whole bunch of stuntman work. Production is slated to start early next year, and you can tell EA what cars you'd like to see in the film by posting on its Facebook page. As if the fruit on your phone, iPod, tablet, Android, and Kinect weren't already sliced thoroughly enough, Halfbrick is burdening yet more fruit with potential murder in the upcoming movie tie-in Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots. As you've likely surmised, the game is a Puss in Boots-themed Fruit Ninja release, which imagines the titular Puss slicing up fruit with his dutiful foil.

In addition to introducing a well-timed theme into the mix, FN: PIB adds the "all-new Bandito mode," which tasks players with surviving progressively more difficult levels with unique challenges, and the "Desperado" mode, which updates the first game's "Classic" mode. "We wanted to create something new and different for our fans while keeping the magic of Fruit Ninja intact, and we think Bandito Mode will keep even the most practiced players on their toes," Jetpack Joyride playable character and Halfbrick chief marketing man Phil Larsen notes in the announcement.
So this is ... weird.

Halo.fr received a press release for the French version of the novel Halo: Cryptum, and it mentions a forthcoming Halo movie in development with Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.

Now, we've gotten better than a greedy mortician at ignoring signs of life from the oft-revived and killed-off Halo movie, and would have been more than happy to dismiss this as a misinformed publicist or hopeful copy editor. But it's a little harder in this case. The blurb mirrors a report from Vuture that Dreamworks was considering adapting the books, avoiding some of the legal cruft gathered around the video game-to-movie adaptation. Ready for the weird part? We ran the story on the Vulture piece exactly one year ago today.

Spooky, right? We suspect the interference of ghosts, but we've contacted the novel's US publisher and Microsoft in the hopes of finding our for sure.

[Update: We heard back from Tor, which publishes Halo books stateside. It doesn't work with French publisher Milady directly, but was unaware of any movie version of Halo in the works. That's not a denial per se, but if it was happening, you can bet Tor would have heard about it.

Update 2: And now, a post from 343 Industries' Frank O'Connor on NeoGAF, which reads "This is ow you say? Ah yes. Ze nonsense." Yeah, we're calling it: Time of death: 12:05 p.m. EST]
Rumor: Dreamworks Halo movie mentioned in press release [update 2] originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 10:00:00 EST. Somewhere, someone has tossed a coin into a fountain, quietly uttering "I wish I were an Antonio Banderas cat." Were we the universe, we would have fulfilled wishes about global hunger or world peace first, but whatever.

Puss In Boots: The Video Game is a licensed multiplatform exercise from THQ, coming to 360, PS3, Wii and DS sometime around the movie's November 4 theatrical release. The 360 and PS3 versions both tout heavy Kinect and Move integration, respectively, claiming that Kinect owners can "actually become Puss," which sounds painful and terrifying.

The PS3 version's Move support allows for a much more normal sounding "full-motion sword fighting experience," while the DS variant receives the standard mini-game collection treatment. Wii owners can expect a rather Zelda-esque sounding Wiimote + Nunchuk configuration, as well as a lower price-tag ($29.99), while PS3 and 360 owners will be charged slightly less discounty discounts ($39.99 and $49.99).

Personally, we've all got our fingers crossed for a Nasonex Bee pre-order bonus.
Puss In Boots: The Video Game is exactly what it sounds like originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 02 Oct 2011 16:30:00 EST. DreamWorks CEO Jeff Katzenberg is expanding his portfolio beyond touching our hearts with endearing movies about pandas and ogres to touching our Facebook profiles with invites to games about agriculture. The animated film studio co-founder is now also the sixth member of Zynga's board of directors -- which, according to a blog post by Zynga chief Mark Pincus, came about "after he suggested that the blockbuster of 2011 could be ShrekVille."

We've read that statement probably about 20 times now, and we're still not sure whether or not it's a joke. Like, it seems like a joke -- we're no strangers to the phony baloney portmanteau -- but we're receptive to the fact that a thing called ShrekVille would probably make a berzillion dollars.
DreamWorks' Jeff Katzenberg joins Zynga board of directors originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 21:00:00 EST. The success of Halo: Reach has spurred interest in a Halo film again, apparently -- this time with Dreamworks. As you all know, the idea of a Halo movie has been batted around for quite a while. Spielberg was rumored to be interested and Neill Blomkamp of District 9 even spent five months working on the film.

Now it's in limbo, though a piece by Vulture offers fans hope. Dreamworks is apparently looking at novelizations of the game as source material, thus avoiding the quagmire of troubles Universal and Fox ran into sinking resources into developing a video game adaptation for the big screen. The Vulture piece says Fox and Universal resolved their issues out of court.

So by focusing on the books, Dreamworks can claim that its project is something entirely different, allowing it to bypass the hefty costs the original project accrued. Oh, and before you get your hopes up, know that even if the movie is an honest possibility, it's still a long way out: as of now, there's been no writer hired, nor has a script been produced.
Rumor: Dreamworks looking at Halo novels for film adaptation originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Oct 2010 21:00:00 EST. Mythic Entertainment's Mike "Daarken" Lim and Dreamworks' Leif Jeffers aren't the type of gentlemen to sit around idly while a friend is in need. When Lim's girlfriend (Cat) was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year at the age of 25, the two quickly hatched a plan to help her wade through the sea of medical bills that a bilateral mastectomy and 16 weeks of chemotherapy can quickly accrue. That plan quickly turned into an art auction named "beautifulgrim."
Artists from all over the game and film industries have contributed to the project -- from Blizzard and Rockstar on the gaming side to Pixar and Disney on the film side, to name only a few. Lim is hoping to hold the auction "sometime next Spring" in either San Francisco or New York City, though plans are still a bit up in the air. " We are still in the process of looking for a venue, so the date and location of the opening reception is still unknown," Lim told us. He also encouraged people to check out some of the already submitted works on the project's Facebook page. Any money earned in the auction beyond what Cat requires will be given to "a breast cancer related charity to be determined by the artists in the coming weeks."

Though you only have one day left to tell Lim if you'd like to contribute, final art for the show isn't due until February 1. We wish them the best of luck.
THQ is no stranger to producing accessible, fun-for-the-whole-family entertainment and has just inked a deal to acquire exclusive rights to Dreamworks game tie-ins worldwide. This agreement will see THQ produce three titles initially: Kung-Fu Panda 2: The Kaboom of Doom; a game based on upcoming Shrek spin-off, Puss in Boots; and a title based on the animated TV series, The Penguins of Madagascar. That last one sounds a lot more interesting than a game based on Morgan Freeman's penguins, though we must admit, a game based on the French version of that would be fantastique.

But, we digress. THQ also gains rights for "<location>Xbox Live Arcade</location>, PlayStation Network and Nintendo Wii Virtual Console" -- we guess THQ has never heard of WiiWare? The first title to release as a part of this deal, The Penguins of Madagascar, will grace store shelves starting next year, while the other games will release alongside their theatrical counterparts in 2011.
THQ gains exclusive rights to Dreamworks game tie-ins originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Dec 2009 22:00:00 EST. That's just what the company has named its upcoming kart racer, starring the cast of the animated movie, coming to current-gen consoles on October 27.

Worried that the game might only be for kidz? Activision's David Oxford claims the game was designed for all ages, saying, "With the whole family competing against each other as their favorite zoosters, you have never seen action this wild." Long ago, a young kid with a dream of breaking out of the movie business and into games named Stevie Spielberg showed up in Silicon Valley with just his cockeyed optimism and millions upon millions of dollars. But when times got tough, he made the decision to sell his company, Dreamworks Interactive, to EA, just as it was about to finish Medal of Honor.

Stevie's all grown up now, and says that he now realizes his game company could have stayed afloat based solely on the success of Medal of Honor. He told Reuters the move was the "smartest and dumbest thing [he] ever did."

... Wait, wait. Dumber than AI? In the special way that only Joystiq can, we're taking two demos that most of you won't care about, combining them into one post and, with just a little bit of pixie dust, making them newsworthy. It's a dangerous, arcane sort of magic, not to be attempted by novices or those with a heart condition.

So, if you'd like a sampling of MLB 2K9 or Monsters vs. Aliens, you maybe be in the minority of people on earth, but you're also in luck. Behold!

Update: Yep, we've already posted about Monsters vs. Aliens, but at least there's no chance anyone will miss out now.
Demo-rama: MLB 2K9 [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 11:40:00 EST. We hope (yet are pretty certain) that DreamWorks' flick offers up more entertainment than the game.

[Via Major Nelson]
Monsters vs. Aliens demo picks a fight with the XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 22 Feb 2009 19:10:00 EST. Next year's feature film from Dreamworks, Monsters vs. Aliens, will be adapted to all major platforms. Set for a March release next year, the game will be developed by Beenox Inc. and stars a group of misfit monsters on a quest to save the world from an attacking force. The game will feature co-op gameplay, as well as multiple playable characters.

[Via press release]
Activision publishing Monsters vs. Aliens game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 20:11:00 EST. THQ, despite receiving some bad press regarding their bottom line, still has investors -- as such, they still have presentations explaining to their investors how breathtaking their games are. We usually gloss right over said morsels of self-congratulation, as they rarely contain anything other than boring sales charts and demographic research, but a recent THQ investor informer actually contained some new, worthwhile information concerning the company's plans for next year.

Skipping past the slightly humorous claim that Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 is the unattributed "#1 Fighting Game", THQ revealed release windows for three of their "bigger" properties: an entry in their long-held but never used Ultimate Fighting Championship franchise (Spring '09), their youth-oriented crime fighting title Marvel Super Hero Squad (Fall '09), and a Fall 2010 release window for their adaptation of Dreamworks' upcoming film Master Mind, echoing the movie's initial release date. This information was immediately followed by hopeful sales charts to prove that the company will, in fact, still be in operation in 2010.
THQ investor presentation reveals release windows for Super Hero Squad, Master Mind originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 14 Jun 2008 20:30:00 EST. Good news we say, although the the whole "current plan" wording doesn't put us at complete ease.

HD DVD is getting its metaphorical bum whipped lately and things do not look to be getting any brighter.

The Financial Times has cooked up the latest HD DVD versus Blu-ray rumor and are claiming that Paramount may be close to announcing that they're going Blu-ray exclusive and abandon their multi-million dollar partnership with the HD DVD camp. The rumor is based on sources close to Paramount's deal with Toshiba saying that there is a clause in the contract that allows Paramount to back Blu-ray in the event Warner Bros. goes blu. And wouldn't you know, last week Warner did just that. If Paramount were to jump to Blu-ray then Sony would have a massive choke hold on the HD format war further pushing their movie studio support higher than their current 70% rate. The other question mark in the equation is Dreamworks who are best buds with Paramount and are said to have a similar contract with Toshiba. Oh well, there's always Universal. They got HD DVD's back ... don't they?

[Via Gizmodo, Thanks DjDATZ]
Rumor: Paramount to jump the HD DVD ship too? Yes, it's a kids game based on a kids movie, so you've got a pretty good of idea what to expect. Joystiq tried the game out several months ago, managing to describe it as "a cute diversion" and as an experience on par with the recent Surf's Up game adaptation. Today's new demo is for Shrek the Third, the game based on the film coming out next month. We haven't played the demo yet, but the dash details confirm that players can play as either Shrek or the delightfully absurd Puss In Boots (cats don't wear boots!). Given the franchise's history, we expect some mild platforming shenanigans. Oh, and it has pirates in it, so it can't be all bad. It couldn't be worse than Shrek on the original Xbox, could it?

[Thanks, Adam]
Shrek the Third demo stinks up Marketplace originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 10:30:00 EST. Because of his immense popularity, Activision plans on giving the squirrel his very own video game in Hammy Goes Nuts. The game will be released this fall on the PSP, GBA and DS.

Players will take control of Hammy, RJ and Verne and once again adventure out of the forest in an attempt to reconnect Hammy's lost cable TV connection. Not much else is known about the games, other than each game will be original to its platform.

I have to be honest here, I totally loved Hammy in the movie. With his superspeed and hyperactivity, Hammy is an definitely interesting character to base a game from, but would it be too much to hold out hope for Steve Carell to provide Hammy's in the game? Yeah, probably.

(Via IGN)
Over the Hedge spin-off on its way originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Aug 2006 14:00:00 EST. And without any warning, the Transformers movie teaser has arrived four days early. Paramount and Dreamworks have given us a pleasant surprise for the holiday weekend, but I wouldn't count on the multi-platform game launching ahead of schedule next Spring. It has been six months since Activision acquired publishing rights, and they still haven't announced a developer.
Transformers teaser arrives early originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Jun 2006 11:35:00 EST.
