Starting May 20, Nintendo is dropping the MSRP of the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi">DSi</a> to $99.99 (from $150), and the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a> to $129.99 (from $170). Finally, the DSi XL will be cheaper than the 3DS - which launches in a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/nintendos-midnight-purple-3ds-made-official-eggplanting-at-r/">new color</a> the same day!<br /><br />If you don't have a device that can play DSiWare, a $100 DSi opens you up to a variety of great games - especially now that the platform has had a few years to slowly build a library. Yes, there are worthwhile games on DSiWare - like <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shantae-riskys-revenge">Shantae: Risky's Revenge</a>, <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/cave-story">Cave Story</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/art-style-pictobits/">Pictobits</a></em>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/portabliss-antipole-dsiware/"><em>Antipole</em></a>, to name a few.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/10/dsi-drops-to-100-dsi-xl-drops-to-130-may-20/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DSi drops to $100, DSi XL drops to $130 May 20</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/10/dsi-drops-to-100-dsi-xl-drops-to-130-may-20/">DSi drops to $100, DSi XL drops to $130 May 20</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 May 2012 09:15:00 EST. With the 3DS not doing as well as Nintendo would like, and with a pressing need to get the device in as many hands as possible before the Vita hits, it's issuing two new holiday bundles of ... the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a>.<br />
<br />
On November 6, you'll be able to get Nintendo's oversized handheld in new Midnight Blue or Metallic Rose colors, each with a copy of <em>Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem</em>, for the normal DSi XL price of $169.99.<br />
<br />
That's the same price as the 3DS, by the way. So, basically, these bundles are <em>excellent</em> competition for the new system.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dsi-xl-holiday-2011-bundles/">DSi XL Holiday 2011 bundles</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dsi-xl-holiday-2011-bundles/#4555013"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/dsixl102501_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dsi-xl-holiday-2011-bundles/#4555014"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/10/dsixl102502_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/25/get-the-dsi-xl-in-blue-or-pink-this-holiday/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Get the DSi XL in blue or pink this holiday</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/25/get-the-dsi-xl-in-blue-or-pink-this-holiday/">Get the DSi XL in blue or pink this holiday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 09:25:00 EST. From massive price cuts to tossing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/07/gaze-upon-the-3ds-circle-pad-attachment/">the 3DS in a cradle</a>, we're starting to suspect that when it comes to the DS platform, Nintendo seems to be throwing it all to the wall and seeing what sticks. The latest evidence: Today the company announced that a new color of the DSi XL, "Metallic Rose," will arrive on Sept. 18.<br />
<br />
And yes, we said the "DSi XL." As in "I gave this DSi XL to my legally blind grandma so she could see her sudoku except she fractured her wrist attempting to heave the thing from her coffee table." <em>That </em>DSi XL.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/metallic-rose-dsi-xl-bafflingly-arriving-sept-18/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Metallic Rose DSi XL bafflingly arriving Sept. 18</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/09/metallic-rose-dsi-xl-bafflingly-arriving-sept-18/">Metallic Rose DSi XL bafflingly arriving Sept. 18</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Sep 2011 10:00:00 EST. This Sunday, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@3ds">3DS</a> launches in the US and, to celebrate the occasion, US-based <em>megastore</em> Walmart is offering quite the deal for anyone who lives in one of a dozen states. When purchasing the new handheld, consumers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina will have the option of trading in their used DS for a $100 credit towards their 3DS purchase. If they've got two old DS systems laying around, both can be traded in for $200 towards a 3DS, but that's as high as Walmart's willing to go.<br />
<br />
The trade-in program will start this Sunday with the 3DS launch and continue through April 30. This promotion is in-store only -- sorry, no online orders.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/select-walmart-stores-offering-100-credit-toward-3ds-with-old-d/">Select Walmart stores offering $100 credit toward 3DS with old DS trade-in</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 19:10:00 EST. In addition to select, hand-picked Game Boy and Game Boy Color classics, the 3DS's Virtual Console will also play host to titles from two slightly surprising sources: The Sega Game Gear and TurboGraphx-16 handhelds. No specific entries from the two devices were named during Reggie Fils-Aime's presentation at Nintendo's GDC keynote today -- though we've got our fingers crossed for the speedy arrival of <em>Sonic Chaos</em>.<br />
<br />
Fils-Aime also confirmed the late May arrival of the Virtual Console via a system update, which wiill also introduce a handful of the device's other online features, including: DSiWare (and the ability to transfer DSiWare games from a DSi or DSi XL), the web browser and eShop. It's likely to be the same update that will <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/netflix-and-short-form-video-service-coming-to-nintendo-3ds/">add Netflix</a> and some 3D video features, too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/3ds-virtual-console-getting-game-gear-and-turbographx-16-games/">3DS Virtual Console getting Game Gear and TurboGraphx-16 games, coming late May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 13:04:00 EST. In case you haven't seen the 3DS Game Cards on <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/hardware/features/features01.html">Nintendo's site</a>, this is what they look like: just like DS carts, but white, and with a small protrusion on the side to keep you from trying to use them in a DS.<br />
<br />
Another fact you may not have been aware of: your DSi and DSi XL AC adapters will work in the 3DS, a nice change from Nintendo's usual habit of changing the shape of the connector. And something <em>we</em> weren't aware of: according to Andriasang, 3DS game cases are thinner than those for DS games, in addition to being <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/11/super-monkey-ball-3d-rolls-past-3ds-launch-date-in-japan/">backwards</a></em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/17/dsi-charger-is-compatible-with-3ds-and-other-minutiae/">DSi charger is compatible with 3DS, and other minutiae</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. This November may have been the biggest. The NPD reports that last month was the "best November on record in terms of new physical retail sales," ahead of November 2008 by around $30 million. <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops</em> had the biggest first month of any game ever, with 8.4 million copies. <br />
<br />
And Microsoft (producer of the best-selling non-DS console) tells us that with 1.37 million consoles sold, November 2010 was not only the biggest November ever for Xbox, it was the biggest month ever. Thanks, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/kinect">Kinect</a>! Thanks, new hardware! Handhelds were actually down vs. previous years, though the DS was still the top-selling console, with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/red-wii-and-dsi-xl-bundles-wii-remote-plus-and-flingsmash-in-n/"><em>Mario</em> red DSi XL</a> representing the majority of sales. Nintendo said that "over 1.5 million" DS systems were sold last month.<br />

After the break, check out the top-selling games of the month. You already know what's at number one, of course.<em> Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood</em> follows at #2, with surprisingly strong showings for both <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/fable-3">Fable 3</a></em> and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/donkey-kong-country-returns">Donkey Kong Country Returns</a> </em>down the list.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/november-npd-best-month-ever-for-retail-xbox/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>November NPD: Best month ever for retail, Xbox</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/november-npd-best-month-ever-for-retail-xbox/">November NPD: Best month ever for retail, Xbox</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Dec 2010 18:30:00 EST. The deal of the day is <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/just-dance-2">Just Dance 2</a></em> for $25.99, representing the perfect opportunity for you to pick it up as a gift for someone else. (Yeah, that's the ticket!)<br />
<br />
Lightning deals include <em>Plants vs. Zombies</em> for $13.99 on Xbox 360, and several deals that have yet to be named specifically. We've got "guesses" after the break courtesy of <a href="http://thriftynerd.com/?p=693">Thrifty Nerd</a>. We say "guesses" because, as repeat deals, it's not too hard to figure them out. Likely highlights include discounts on the DSi XL, PS3, and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/vanquish">Vanquish</a></em>. In addition, there's <em>another</em> whole <a href="http://www.amazon.com/b/?node=409566">list</a> of "family-friendly" discounts today for day 2 of Amazon's "17 Days of Deals."<br />

We'll be the first to admit it's nigh impossible to grasp the nuances of just <em>what in the world</em> is going on with the global economy, but things are clearly up you-know-whose creek without a paddle when Nintendo reports a ... <em>loss?!</em> Sure, earnings were seriously down for Nintendo during the same six-month period <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/29/nintendo-half-year-results-show-profits-down-in-2009/">last year</a> (April-September), but even then, as other companies suffered tremendous hits, Nintendo enjoyed &yen;69.5 billion in profit (which was roughly $766 million by the rate of exchange a year ago).<br />
<br />
The problem is that the yen has appreciated <em>wildly</em> against the dollar since that time -- what was $766 million a year ago, would be more like $850 million today. In and of itself, that kind of appreciation might look spectacular, except 81.4 percent of Nintendo's sales have been overseas during the current fiscal year. When the yen is this strong, earnings on Japanese exports (sold with importers' currencies) are dashed on their way back to Japan (where they are converted back to yen). According to Nintendo's <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/index.html">first-half report </a>(April-Sept. 2010), "foreign currencies generated exchange losses totaling 62.1 billion yen," and, in turn, the company suffered net losses of &yen;2 billion (about $24.6 million) for the period.<br />
<br />
Keep in mind, this loss comes after selling 4.07 million copies of <em>Pokémon Black</em> and <em>White</em> since September 18 (in Japan alone); 5.1 million units of <em>Super Mario Galaxy 2;</em> and a million-plus <em>Wii Party</em> games. Worldwide, DS software sales totaled 54.84 million units, while Wii games accounted for 65.21 million units sold in the first-half of the fiscal year.<br />
<br />
As for hardware, the various DS models combined to move 6.69 million units (including 2.26 million DSi and 3.21 million DSi XLs), as Wii racked up another 4.97 million units sold during the period. And <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/red-wii-and-dsi-xl-bundles-wii-remote-plus-and-flingsmash-in-n/">did you hear</a>? The new red Wii and DSi XL are going to be released next month to celebrate ... uh, the 25th anniversary of <em>Super Mario Bros.,</em> of course!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/28/nintendo-painted-red-in-first-half-fiscal-year-results/">Nintendo painted red in first-half fiscal year results</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 11:02:00 EST. Both the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/super-mario-wii-and-dsi-xl-systems-coming-to-europe/">red Wii</a> and DSi XL systems will arrive on November 7.<br />
<br />
The $200 Wii bundle includes <em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</em>, <em>Wii Sports</em>, and a red <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/wii-remote-plus">Wii Remote Plus</a>. Neither the package nor the press release mentions anything about the special versions of the NES <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> or <em>Donkey Kong</em> included in other regions. The $180 DSi XL bundle includes <em>Mario Kart DS</em>, and comes pre-loaded with two <em>Brain Age Express</em> games and <em>Photo Clock.</em><br />
<br />
The Wii Remote Plus, combining a Wiimote and a MotionPlus, will be released the same day for $40, in white, black, pink, and blue. It will be the standard Wii controller from now on, included in hardware bundles. <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/flingsmash">FlingSmash</a></em> will also come packed in with a Wii Remote Plus -- it's out the same day for $50.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-mario-bros-25th-anniversary-systems/">Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary systems</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-mario-bros-25th-anniversary-systems/#3492778"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/nintendo102105_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/super-mario-bros-25th-anniversary-systems/#3492779"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/nintendo102106_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-remote-plus/">Wii Remote Plus</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-remote-plus/#3492792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/nintendo102101_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-remote-plus/#3492794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/nintendo102102_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-remote-plus/#3492795"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/nintendo102103_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-remote-plus/#3492796"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/10/nintendo102104_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/red-wii-and-dsi-xl-bundles-wii-remote-plus-and-flingsmash-in-n/">Red Wii and DSi XL bundles, Wii Remote Plus, and FlingSmash in North America Nov. 7</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 09:29:00 EST. Today, the special edition <em>Super Mario Bros. </em>25th Anniversary <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/mario-dsi-xl-and-dsi-temporarily-make-us-forget-the-3ds/">DSi XL</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/07/red-wii-with-special-super-mario-bros-coming-to-japan/">Wii</a> systems have been announced for the region as well, with each red system bundled with a <em>Mario</em> game.<br />
<br />
The red Wii set, in stores October 29, includes <em>Wii Sports</em> and <em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</em>. However, instead of the special version of <em>Super Mario Bros.</em> packed with the Japanese system, the European version includes the "original" <em>Donkey Kong</em>. This is probably just the NES game on Virtual Console, but the "original" terminology suggests it <em>could</em> be the arcade game. The red DSi XL bundle includes a copy of <em>New Super Mario Bros</em>. and will be out October 22.<br />
<br />
<em>None</em> of this has been announced in North America. Happy birthday, Mario!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/11/super-mario-wii-and-dsi-xl-systems-coming-to-europe/">Super Mario Wii and DSi XL systems coming to Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Oct 2010 14:45:00 EST. We feel the same way about bringing you the news that you'll be able to buy one of these for yourself in December. An Amazon listing shows that the charger, which was released in Japan this September, will be available in America through the online retailer on December 23.<br />
<br />
It's designed to work with both the DSi and DSi XL, and will sell on Amazon for $40. Nintendo has revealed an image of the system (above), along with a surprise: a <a href="http://www.7netshopping.jp/all/static/mario25.html">25th Anniversary DSi</a>, also in red, and also with Mario graphics. That's going to make choosing<em> even more difficult</em>.<br />
<br />
The DSi LL will be available in Japan on October 28 for 18,000 yen ($215). The DSi, featuring an adorable little Mario jumping over the camera, will be available the same day for 14,800 yen ($177) -- but only from 7-Eleven and its online shop.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/mario-dsi-xl-and-dsi-temporarily-make-us-forget-the-3ds/">Mario DSi XL and DSi temporarily make us forget the 3DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 14:40:00 EST. At it' press conference in Japan this afternoon (well, in Japan it's the afternoon), Nintendo announced plans to release a Super Mario 25th Anniversary Edition DSi LL (DSi XL, as it's known in the West) to the Japanese public on October 28. <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/09/29/nintendo_conf_live_blog/">Andriasang's liveblog</a> of the goings-on also give it an &yen;18000 ($215) price point. Unfortunately, like all <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/13/super-mario-collection-announced-for-wii-in-japan/">other things</a> regarding Super Mario's big <em>two five</em>, this is likely to stay grounded in Japan.<br />

Europe will receive yellow, green and blue DSi XL models on October 8, the latest colors in DS fashion (previously <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/nintendo-cuts-dsi-and-dsi-xl-prices-in-japan-announces-new-dsi/">released in Japan</a>). With uncertainty swirling over the launch date of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a>, it may be worth tapping the brakes just a little before splurging on one of the XL's latest colors.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/new-dsi-xl-colors-coming-to-europe-october-8/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New DSi XL colors coming to Europe October 8</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/new-dsi-xl-colors-coming-to-europe-october-8/">New DSi XL colors coming to Europe October 8</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Sep 2010 16:20:00 EST. Starting September 12, the handhelds will retail for $149.99 and 169.99, respectively.<br />
<br />
Americans have been waiting patiently for this price drop, which occurred in the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/dsi-price-drop-set-for-june-18-in-uk/">UK</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/nintendo-cuts-dsi-and-dsi-xl-prices-in-japan-announces-new-dsi/">Japan</a> this June. The DSi had a price drop in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/14/dsi-now-cheaper-in-australia/">Australia</a> way back in April. We were all waiting for a price drop even before that, of course, since the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> is on the way to make both of these things appear a little more antiquated.<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/30/price-drop-for-dsi-and-dsi-xl-in-north-america-on-september-12/">Price drop for DSi and DSi XL in North America on September 12</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Aug 2010 09:55:00 EST. <div style="text-align: right;"> </div>
The combination of new hardware and a "newish" <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/monster-hunter">Monster Hunter</a></em> gave the Xbox 360 a considerable sales bump in Japan last week. <a href="http://m-create.com/ranking/">Media Create</a> reports that 17,000 Xboxes were sold in that time (versus 2,060 the <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/06/25/ds_sales_surge/">previous week</a>); 15,000 being the new model. That hardware sales rise coincides with the sale of 92,807 copies of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/monster-hunter-frontier/">Monster Hunter Frontier Online</a> </em><em><a href="http://members.mh-frontier.jp/topic/360/beginnerspkg/">Beginner's Package</a>.</em> Neither the new Xbox owners nor the existing ones saw any need to round out their game collections with additional games -- there were no other 360 games among the top 50 bestselling software for the week.<br />
<br />
Though Xbox 360 sales were much higher last week relative to the console's typical performance in Japan, the clear winner was the DSi LL, thanks to a combination of several factors: a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/nintendo-cuts-dsi-and-dsi-xl-prices-in-japan-announces-new-dsi/">price cut</a>, the release of three new colors of the system, and <em>Love Plus+,</em> the latest version of Konami's breakout hit dating game ... which also coincided with <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2010/06/02/limited-edtion-love-plus-dsi-xls-are-deluxe/">three more</a> special-edition DSi LL systems. See the rest of the top ten bestsellers after the break.<br />

Less than two months after the North American release of the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a>, Nintendo has announced a new color variation for the handheld -- and it's one that doesn't make us think of a Cadillac at all! On July 11, the large-screened handheld will be released in Midnight Blue, which appears to be the same as the "blue" color <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/nintendo-cuts-dsi-and-dsi-xl-prices-in-japan-announces-new-dsi/">announced</a> for Japan this month. It'll retail for the normal $189.99 price Nintendo has set for the DSi XL in North America.<br />
<br />
Though Nintendo doesn't mention it in the press release, the timing of this new handheld coincides perfectly with <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dragon-quest-ix">Dragon Quest IX</a>. The publisher is likely hoping to entice customers to pick up both together -- a Midnight Blue DSi XL at a midnight launch of the game, perhaps?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/08/dsi-xl-goes-midnight-blue-on-july-11/">DSi XL goes Midnight Blue on July 11</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 10:29:00 EST. With the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> right around the corner, buying a DSi or DSi XL seems a bit foolish. Now, in Japan, it'll at least be a more cost-effective foolish decision, as Nintendo of Japan has announced price drops on both iterations of the DSi. The regular-size DSi drops in price on June 19 from &yen;18,900 ($205.55) to &yen;15,000 ($163.13), while the DSi XL drops from &yen;20,000 ($217.51) to &yen;18,000 ($195.76). The DS Lite is now "open price," meaning retailers can price it at their discretion.<br />
<br />
In addition to the price drop, there will be three new colors of DSi XL available in Japan on June 19: blue, yellow, and green. These are a lot more fun than the previous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/dsi-xl-faq-sized-up/">luxury car colors</a> for the giant handheld.<br />

It feels vaguely magical to lay a device down on top of a mat and watch the little battery light turn on. CTA Digital's new Non Contact Induction Charging Pad will enable DSi and DSi XL owners to enjoy the convenience of <em>setting a thing on top of another thing</em>. By replacing your battery with the special battery included with the kit, you'll be able to charge the device through contact with the charging stand with four lights (not <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chain_of_Command_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation)">five</a>) to indicate charge level. <br />
<br />
The device is available now from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/DSi-Non-Contact-Charger-Nintendo-DS/dp/B003E4BG9S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1270087091&amp;sr=8-1">Amazon</a> and other retailers. And the screen, it lacks so much <em>depth</em>." Thankfully, the fine folks at RealView Innovations have heard your plea and announced plans to bring the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/v-screen">V-Screen</a> to Nintendo's not-so-diminutive handheld. <br />
<br />
In case you missed the V-Screen for PSP, here's the breakdown: It attaches to your handheld, adds considerable bulk and kinda, <em>sorta</em> makes the screen look 3D ... a little bit. Don't take our word for it though, you can see for yourself in our extensive video impressions <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/05/psp-realview-v-screen-video-preview/">here</a>.<br />
<br />
We're usually a pretty jaded bunch here at Joystiq, but bringing 3D effects to the DS actually seems like a great idea. It's a wonder that no one <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/3ds">thought of it before</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/22/v-screen-to-bring-depth-to-dsi-xl/">V-Screen to bring depth to DSi XL</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Apr 2010 13:25:00 EST. Michael Pachter described the March launch of Nintendo's latest handheld, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-dsi-xl">Nintendo DSi XL</a>, "solid." Considering it outsold both the PSP and PSP Go <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/15/march-npd-pokemon-and-kratos-catch-all-the-money/">combined</a>, we're inclined to agree.<br />
<br />
According to NPD figures (via <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28130/US_DSi_XL_Sold_141000_Units_In_Its_Debut_Month.php">Gamasutra</a>), the DSi XL sold 141,000 units in March, besting PSP's combined 120,000. Even more impressive is that this figure only accounts for four days of sales; the DSi XL was released on March 28th. The tremendous success of the equally tremendous device confirms that there truly is "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/04/nintendos-dunaway-says-ds-has-room-to-grow-in-us-market/">room to grow</a>" for the DS market.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/16/npd-nintendo-dsi-xl-outsold-psp-in-march-2010/">NPD: Nintendo DSi XL outsold PSP in March 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Apr 2010 19:03:00 EST. Thanks to the combination of a new hardware variant (the big, big, big <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a>) and new <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/pokemon-heart-gold">Pokemon</a></em> games, the dual-screened platform sold like gangbusters. Meanwhile, hardware shortages kept the PS3 from massive sales despite the fact that it had the best-selling game of March (<a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/god-of-war-3"><em>God of War 3</em></a>).<br />
<br />
Speaking of software, we've learned a lot about you from this month. For example, <em>Final Fantasy</em> fans strongly prefer PS3, <em>Battlefield</em> fans strongly prefer 360, and <em>Pokemon</em> fans' dollar votes went to <em>SoulSilver</em> over <em>HeartGold</em> by quite a lot. How do you even decide something like that? Seriously, one of the 1.78 million or so of you who bought it -- take us through your process!<br />

It's still pretty expensive, though: the system will now sell for $249.95 (US $233.35) instead of $299.95 (US $280). <br />
<br />
The DSi XL will now occupy that $299.95 slot, which explains why Nintendo chose to drop the price of the smaller model. Still, if you're in Australia and you want to be even remotely pleased with these prices, try not to look into how much this stuff costs anywhere else.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/14/dsi-now-cheaper-in-australia/">DSi now cheaper in Australia</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 00:46:00 EST. M2 Research analyst <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/billy-pidgeon">Billy Pidgeon</a> claims that the Japanese press were "all over" the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> before Nintendo revealed it, forcing an announcement out of the company's headquarters in Japan. In a recent <a href="http://www.cnbc.com//id/36087758?">CNBC</a> report, Pidgeon alleges that the media in Japan had "talked with suppliers there and Nintendo just wanted to get out ahead by breaking the news to prevent a leak." This comes in response to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/23/breaking-nintendo-announces-the-3ds-more-news-at-e3/">oddly-timed reveal</a> of Nintendo's next handheld device, less than a week before the fourth iteration of its Nintendo DS was set to land on retail shelves.<br />
<br />
"Does it clash with the DSi XL? Yes it does," Pidgeon says. He goes on to claim that (even though <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/24/nintendo-stock-rises-following-3ds-announcement/">stock prices for Nintendo jumped</a> following the 3DS announcement), "the corporate parent in Japan may not be acting in the best interest of Nintendo of America." Alright, so, while we're not convinced that those looking to buy a brand new handheld from Nintendo are necessarily the same crowd snatching up a DSi XL, it's also probably not in Nintendo of America's best interests to have console announcements thrust upon it suddenly by the Japanese parent corp. Either way -- if it <em>is</em> true -- good on you Japanese press!<br />

The latest hardware to go under the <strike>knife</strike> screwdriver: Nintendo's just-released <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a>, which, in its torn-down form, takes up even more space!<br />
<br />
In exhaustive detail, the iFixit team pulls apart the new, big DS, cataloging all the parts inside. Unsurprisingly, the internals are very similar to the previous DSi, save for a larger (in both capacity in physical size) battery and one fewer ribbon cable. Oh -- and, of course, those massive screens.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/29/dsi-xl-broken-down-into-extra-tiny-pieces/">DSi XL, broken down into extra-tiny pieces</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Mar 2010 20:00:00 EST. Farsighted Canadians who are jonesing to get their hands on Nintendo's embiggened handheld, the DSi XL, will have a pretty sweet offer waiting for them at Best Buy on March 28. Participating stores will be <a href="http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/trade-in.aspx">handing out DSi XLs</a> in exchange for five game trade-ins -- provided the aforementioned games aren't too worthless.<br />
<br />
Check out <a href="http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/trade-in.aspx">Best Buy Canada's site</a> to get a full list of the titles eligible for the one-day promotion. No, you can't hand in five copies of <em>Madden '97</em>. Thought you had the system beat, didn't you?<br />

We didn't know what to expect when Nintendo of America showed up to the Joystiq offices with a brown paper bag. On the bag was a "guest check" featuring one <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-dsi-xl">Nintendo DSi XL</a> and one "XL sandwich." When we opened the bag we only found Nintendo's new hardware (which we'll be giving away soon, of course!).<br />
<br />
So where was our sandwich? And how big could an XL sandwich be? Two men carrying <em>two</em> <strong>ten-foot</strong> subs walked up the stairs and plopped it in front of us. Looks like Joystiq's current NYC representatives -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/andrew-yoon">Andrew</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/blogger/ludwig-kietzmann">Ludwig</a> -- will have a pretty significant lunch to eat today.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-sandwich/">Nintendo DSi XL Sandwich</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-sandwich/#2821466"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/dsixldsc0001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-sandwich/#2821471"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/dsixldsc0006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-sandwich/#2821473"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/dsixldsc0008_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-sandwich/#2821477"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/dsixldsc0012_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/nintendo-dsi-xl-sandwich/#2821478"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/03/dsixldsc0013_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/22/nintendo-celebrates-launch-of-dsi-xl-with-giant-10-foot-sandwich/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nintendo celebrates launch of DSi XL with giant 10-foot sandwiches</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/22/nintendo-celebrates-launch-of-dsi-xl-with-giant-10-foot-sandwich/">Nintendo celebrates launch of DSi XL with giant 10-foot sandwiches</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Mar 2010 14:30:00 EST. Most folks would tell you, "Start simple." Well, it doesn't get much simpler than the "microgames" of the <em>WarioWare </em>series, which are about as long as ... that pause right there. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/warioware-diy">WarioWare D.I.Y</a>. </em>is all about building your own teeny-tiny titles -- as talked about in our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/impressions-warioware-d-i-y/">recent preview</a> of the <strike>game</strike> <strike>app</strike> game-app -- and Nintendo's attempting to show how easy it can be with a series of brief tutorial videos. We've plugged in the one above, as well as another after the break for your educational needs.<br />
<br />
You'll notice that the guy in the videos is using a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a> -- we can tell you that, after seeing the hardware running <em>D.I.Y. </em>in person, the hefty handheld's humongous screens really are great for editing sprites and other details, as is the pen-sized stylus. Either that, or our eyesight really <em>is</em> getting worse.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/17/warioware-d-i-y-videos-show-you-how-to-d-i-y/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>WarioWare D.I.Y. videos show you how to ... Following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/february-npd-xbox-360-and-bioshock-2-sales-heat-up/">last night's NPD report</a> for February, Nintendo has issued <a href="http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=22751">a press release</a> lauding the amazing selling power of its own products. In typical fashion, the gaming giant that got your grandma into gaming has managed to sell a ridiculous amount of DS and Wii systems in the U.S. -- 1.9 million in the first two months of 2010, to be exact.<br />
<br />
As impressive as that 1.9 million figure is, Nintendo's ability to break its own records is even more impressive. In selling 613,000 DS units throughout February 2010, Nintendo has managed to set a new monthly record, besting the previous top-selling month of February 2009's figure of 597,000 units. It would seem that two things are certain in this life: we're all going to die one day and before that day comes, each of us is going to own nine DS systems.<br />
<br />
With March 28 fast approaching -- that's the release date for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">the DSi XL</a> -- Nintendo is hoping to further build on the success of its now six-year-old handheld. And, to think, even after all that time, the <a href="http://www.explicitgamer.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/prints_money_1_.gif">gif</a> still hasn't gotten old.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/12/nintendo-sells-1-9-million-ds-and-wiis-through-feb-2010/">Nintendo sells 1.9 million DS and Wiis through Feb. 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Mar 2010 10:30:00 EST. Nintendo of America VP Cammie Dunaway thinks the Nintendo DS is going to keep on getting bigger in America. (And no, not just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-dsi-xl">literally</a>.) Speaking with <a href="http://games.venturebeat.com/2010/03/02/nintendo-isnt-worried-about-apple-and-you-wont-see-mario-on-facebook/">VentureBeat</a>, the executive highlighted the tremendous success of the Nintendo handheld. "We had our best year ever, selling 11.2 million units. That has never been done by any game platform ever."<br />
<br />
Yet, in spite of its success, Dunaway believes there's still a lot more to be done with the US market. Dunaway notes that -- in terms of market penetration -- "in Japan, one in two consumers has a DS." But in America? "It is one in four. So we have room to grow." Essentially, if Japan is the benchmark for America, Nintendo must sell twice as many DS systems as it already has.<br />
<br />
If there's one thing we've learned not to doubt this generation, it's Nintendo's ability to sell systems and make money. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/11/january-npd-mass-effect-2-debuts-at-2-hardware-is-down/">In January</a>, the company was able to sell over 400,000 units in America -- and that figure is likely to grow with the introduction of the DSi XL <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/dsi-xl-releasing-march-28-for-190-in-north-america/">in March</a>. Perhaps we need to add even more money to this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/nintendough-fiscal-2009-forecast-raised-again/">already-overused JPG</a>.<br />

In a stunning show that game industry analysts indeed <em>are</em> fallible human beings, Wedbush Morgan's <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/michael-pachter">Michael Pachter</a> has changed his mind on Natal's supposed price. The prolific analyst prognosticated last year that price would be the primary factor in moving Natal hardware, leading him to predict that it would <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/15/pachter-project-natal-will-cost-50-sphere-will-be-over-100/">launch for less than $50</a>. However, he now tells IndustryGamers that it will likely cost more, noting, "consumers will come to believe that the product and software has a lot of value." Furthermore, Pachter says that the higher that Microsoft and Sony price their motion controls, the less likely a consumer is to buy the competing product. In other words, if you spend $100 on <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/project-natal">Natal</a>, you probably won't be too keen to plunk down another $100 for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/playstation-motion-controller">Sony's motion controller</a> (and vice versa).<br />
<br />
Pachter also tackles the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a>. He has some choice words for the beefy handheld, pointing out the $60 difference between the DS Lite and DSi XL models. "I'm not sure that bigger screens provide the value that Nintendo thinks," says Pachter, adding his belief that the entire DS line is due for a price cut. He concludes the device won't succeed at launch "since it costs only $10 less than a Wii."<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: right;"><small>[Left to right: DSi XL, DSi, DS Phat]</small></div>
<br />
Perhaps it was no coincidence that Nintendo stopped by New York City to show off the Nintendo DSi XL, one day after Apple made its not-so-earth-shattering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/big-is-the-new-small-apple-ipad-vs-dsi-xl/">iPad announcement</a>. Like the iPad, the DSi XL is a larger version of an already successful handheld device, but unlike the iPad, the DSi XL promises no added functionality, nor does it alter the electronics landscape in any way. It is, quite succinctly, a bigger DSi.<br />
<br />
One can't help but question why the device exists in the first place. To whom does the DSi XL appeal? Certainly, its gargantuan size makes it stand out as the least portable handheld system we've seen in quite some time, taking a completely opposite approach to that of Sony's PSP Go. Thanks to its larger screen size, it takes up even more space than the original DS Phat -- strange, considering one of the primary complaints held against the Phat was its unwieldy girth.<br />
<br />
What the XL excels at (sorry!) are games that require extensive use of the stylus. The massive stylus that's included with the system is easy to handle, making earlier stylus pens feel cheap and flimsy. The larger screen real estate makes it easier to draw on the system, perfect for intense <em>Pictochat</em> sessions or a round with <em>WarioWare DIY</em>.<br />

The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a> is the star of the show at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-media-summit-2010">Nintendo Media Summit</a>, with the announcement an official price and release date for the system, as well as <a href="http://www.viddler.com/explore/Joystiq/videos/2873/">the marketing material</a> posted above. There are no shocking revelations in the video -- well, aside from the fact that they <em>actually</em> went with "A Larger Experience" for the device's advertising catchphrase. A lesser blog might mention how that sounds like the slogan of one of <em>those commercials</em> that come on cable television after midnight. We'll abstain from making the reference.<br />
<br />
The video does a great job of showing the size of the the device in correlation to human hands of various shapes and sizes. Check it out, and imagine what that Squiggle Pen-sized stylus will look like in your own meaty grasp.<br />

<br />
At its Media Summit today, Nintendo just announced the North American release date for its new, <em>enormous</em> DSi, the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a>: March 28. On that day, you'll be able to walk into a store and pick up a DS that makes your hands (and Cammie Dunaway's head) look <em>super </em>tiny for $189.99; a $20 premium over the regular-sized DSi.<br />
<br />
Hopefully, we'll hear about some new DS games to <em>play</em> on the vast expanses of DSi XL screen space today as the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/nintendo-media-summit-2010">Nintendo Media Summit</a> continues.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>The system will be available in Burgundy and Bronze at launch, and will be preloaded with both DSiWare <em>Brain Age</em> games, <em>Photo Clock</em>, the DSi Browser, and <em>Flipnote Studio</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/24/dsi-xl-releasing-march-28-for-190-in-north-america/">DSi XL releasing March 28 for $190 in North America</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 12:25:00 EST. Sound familiar? It reminded us of the day in late October when Nintendo announced a new version of the DSi, called the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/29/nintendo-officially-announces-large-screen-dsi-ll-hits-japan-no/">DSi LL</a> (DSi XL outside of Japan). Like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/the-apple-ipad/">iPad</a>, it's a version of a current device (in this case, the Nintendo DSi) that is distinguished by its <em>size</em>.<br />
<br />
So how does Apple's inflated iPod Touch stack up against Nintendo's luxury sedan of a DSi? We've compared the two in several <em>totally crucial </em> vectors, based mostly on the changes from the previous model.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/big-is-the-new-small-apple-ipad-vs-dsi-xl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Big is the new small: Apple iPad vs. DSi XL</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/27/big-is-the-new-small-apple-ipad-vs-dsi-xl/">Big is the new small: Apple iPad vs. DSi XL</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 19:00:00 EST. European gamers will be able to take the system home in a big bag on March 5. <br />
<br />
The European edition of the system will launch in Wine Red and Dark Brown, skipping the Natural White color from the Japanese release, and comes preloaded with DSiWare, including <em>A Little Bit of... Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: Arts Edition, Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function</em> and the Nintendo DSi Browser. We have no idea why <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/flipnote-studio"><em>Flipnote Studio</em></a>, which is included with DSi LL systems in Japan, is absent. It's <em>free</em>, so users will have to download that themselves.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/14/dsi-xl-launching-in-europe-march-5/">DSi XL launching in Europe March 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jan 2010 09:45:00 EST. <div style="text-align: right;"><small>[Reuters]</small></div>
We all know a brand-new Nintendo handheld is coming eventually, but in what seems like an effort to detract from the buzz surrounding such a device (and likely to get some of that buzz back on the latest DS revision, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dsi-xl">DSi XL</a>), Nintendo has issued a statement regarding reported comments from Iwata on a new handheld -- what we've affectionately dubbed the "DS2." Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's senior director of corporate communications told <a href="http://kotaku.com/5446592/nintendo-ceos-comments-on-ds-successor-were-misinterpreted">Kotaku</a>, "Mr. Iwata did not make any comments regarding the functions of Nintendo's future hardware systems," adding that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/06/nintendo-ds2-to-feature-movement-sensor-new-wii-zelda-2010/">Iwata's statements</a> as reported by the <em>Asahi Shimbun</em> newspaper were "misinterpreted."<br />
<br />
As for <em>those</em> statements, it seems to be a given that Nintendo would add motion-sensing technology to its next handheld. Looking to ape the Wii's success, the entire industry has moved in the direction of motion-based gaming -- including Microsoft, with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-natal">Project Natal</a>, Sony, using the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-motion-controller">PlayStation Motion Controller</a>, and Apple, a direct competitor in the portable market, chiefly with the IPod Touch. And let's not forget, motion control isn't out of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/07/nintendo-dsi-motion-control-demoed-by-engine-software/">realm of possiblity</a> for the current Nintendo handheld.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/12/nintendo-iwatas-ds2-comments-were-misinterpreted/">Nintendo: Iwata's DS2 comments were 'misinterpreted'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 12 Jan 2010 17:30:00 EST. First up, Capcom's Seth Killian struts his stuff in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tatsunoko-vs-capcom"><em>Tatsunoko vs Capcom</em></a>, explaining the title for the unaware and showing off some of the combo-heavy gameplay behind it. Then, there's the Reggie Fils-Aime interview where he talks about the Nintendo Week program, some of the third-party support Nintendo platforms enjoyed in 2009 and <a href="http://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/30/dsi-xl-faq-sized-up/&amp;ei=KntLS8aMJsHglAfH_8yKDQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=nshc&amp;resnum=1&amp;ct=result&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0CAgQzgQoAA&amp;usg=AFQjCNGLQJt2oBlCkQJwtJUx9KLBsQUUfg">the DSi XL</a>. He also manages to bring up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/06/nintendo-ds2-to-feature-movement-sensor-new-wii-zelda-2010/">the upcoming <em>Zelda</em> game</a> without actually talking about it.<br />
