Next year's iteration of Sony's MLB series will include a special treat for baseball fans. Sure, there's a laundry list of features, such as PlayStation Move support, 3D, and a new analog control system -- but our eyes bolted towards the free trial of MLB.TV. If you pre-order and purchase the game, you'll get 30 days of access to MLB's premium on-demand service, which is also available on the PS3. Given a season membership costs $100, the trial is certainly a nice perk.

To coincide with the launch of MLB 11, Sony has announced yet another limited-edition DualShock 3 controller. A white PS3 controller with baseball stripes will be available on March 8th, the same day as MLB 11, and will retail for $55.

MLB 11 includes free MLB.TV trial, new baseball DualShock revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 15:40:00 EST. Update: This contest is officially closed and the winners will be notified shortly. Please check your email inboxes, folks!

With the holiday game release season officially upon us, it's quite possible that you'll find yourself (like us) jammed on a couch next to relatives who - at least passingly - show interest in the video games we know and love. Sometimes, these folks even ask to play alongside us, eschewing their morals for entertainment (for shame!). It's during these times that we reach for our second or third controller. But what if you only have one controller for your PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360? WHAT THEN?! Then you can turn to Swag Saturday for the possibility of winning one!

We've got one silver PS3 DualShock 3 and two Halo 3: ODST limited edition controllers to give away to three lucky readers. All you have to do is tell us a story about gaming with family during past holidays in the comments below. We get your crazy stories, you get our fancy controllers - talk about a win-win! Prize winners will be alerted by email early this week, so keep your ear to the internet, folks.

Leave a comment telling us a story about gaming with family during past holidays.

You must be 18 years or older and a resident of the US or Canada (excluding Quebec, based on the outcome of the War of 1812)

Limit 1 entry per person per day

This entry period ends at 6:31PM ET on Sunday, November 15

At that time, we'll randomly select three winners to receive one PS3 DualShock 3 (estimated $55 ARV) or one of two Halo 3: ODST limited edition Xbox 360 controllers (estimated $50 ARV each).

Tired of your black DualShock 3 controller? Well, it looks like SCEA may finally start introducing new colors of the rumble-ready PS3 controller. Games retailer GameStop now features a listing for a silver DualShock 3 controller, with a MSRP of $54.99 and a June 24th release.

A retail listing is far from official confirmation, but GameStop has been a rather reliable source of early product listings. We're all for controller color diversity, so we're hoping this one is real.

[Via NeoGAF]
Silver DualShock 3 controller spotted at GameStop originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 15:00:00 EST. The upcoming PSP game will utilize a newly developed technology called "PSP Plus." Using the DualShock will enable dual-analog control in the game. In addition, rumble will be supported. This mod done by Blizzrad of AcidMods lets you use your aging wired DualShock controller and hook it up to your PSP. The controller had its connector replaced for a much smaller one to elegantly fit in with the PSPs slim build. The mod also takes full use of the controller's second analog stick and extra shoulder buttons. The only commands not controlled by the DualShock are backlight and volume control.

If you were one of those looking for dual analog control, then you may remember this older mod which added a second analog nub. This new one would probably be more comfortable to play with than that. Anyway, the only problem with this mod is that it's probably too difficult to do on your own. So don't try it. Apparently, rumble does matter to a lot of Americans. According to SCEA, the feedback-giving DualShock 3 had $10.9 million in sales during the month of April, meaning that about 200,000 Americans were ready to put down $55 for some vibration from their PS3 controller.

As we learned from our initial impression of the DualShock 3: Yes, it's worth it. We do know that the Sixaxis is on its way out, but at this point only the MGS bundles come with the DS3. We're still waiting for the "official" changeover to occur with regular PS3 consoles.

Gallery: DualShock 3

DualShock 3 shakes down US for $10.9 million in April originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 May 2008 09:10:00 EST. Well hooray for that. It's about bloody time that Sony finally says that they're discontinuing the SIXAXIS controllers. They'd told Stephen Totilo of MTV exactly that, adding that once the current stock runs out (estimated to be sometime during the Summer) there will be no more. Presumably this means that DualShock 3s will be made standard pack-ins when buying a PS3. Again, it's about bloody time.

Meanwhile SCEE are remaining tight lipped regarding any date for a European launch of the new rumbling controllers. We're hoping they'll hit before June, considering how big of a fan Kojima is of using the feature. There is a rumor that DualShock 3s will be hitting Europe a month from now, on May 2nd. If we hear anything more then we'll be sure to let you know.
SIXAXIS being discontinued in America, still no sign of DS3s in Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 18:45:00 EST. A new post on the PlayStation.blog reveals which US titles are rumble-ready. It's been a long time coming for rumble fans -- let's just all forget how Sony touted rumble as a "last generation" feature.

Future titles will feature a DualShock icon (featured, right) if they are compatible with the new peripheral. That's rather unnecessary, in our book. Why? Because we expect every game from this point forth to rumble when played on the PS3. That's the way it was always meant to be.
DualShock 3 coming next week, compatability list revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Apr 2008 10:10:00 EST. More news from the Destination PlayStation retailer conference: last-gen rumble is reportedly coming to North American PS3 controllers this April with the release of the DualShock 3. The unit should go on sale on April 15th for $54.99 (a $5 premium over the rumble-less Sixaxis), timed to coincide with the April 17th launch of rumble-capable GT5: Prologue. Adding to earlier claims from an Ars Technica mole, IGN reports various sources have told the website that a recent Gamestop conference call reportedly confirmed the death of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 model. The sources also allege that in its place Sony will release a 120 GB version packaged with ready-to-rumble DualShock 3 controllers.

Sony told IGN that any talk about new consoles iterations is rumor and speculation, and therefore no comment. We haven't seen any patents filed for a new PS3 model (each one has a different model number; see our fancy SKU chart), but the circumstantial evidence is starting to add up.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Rumor: Gamestop conference call mentions 120 GB PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 18:00:00 EST. No, friends, you'll also be able to feel the visceral thrill of rumbling as you whack the monkeys with your stun club. ... Or, you know, play other PS2 games that don't involve catching monkeys. The DualShock 3's rumbling abilities with PS2 games, which only a few would have noticed by now, was apparently added by the PS3's 2.0 firmware.

So the DualShock 3 is the newest gen of a next-gen peripheral now reaching back through time to accommodate a last-gen feature on last-gen games. But the only PS3s that support it will be those that play last-gen games, a feature that itself has become last-gen. We've honestly lost count of the layers of irony. Help us out here, Alanis.
DualShock 3 rumble works with PS2 games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 09:55:00 EST.
The redhead witch in the flimsy blue dress is holding a golden Wii remote with an attached wand. Could it be some sort of Brando accessory that we haven't heard about yet?

The schoolboy chasing the woman looks too happy for his own good. Perhaps class just let out? Or maybe the leggy sorceress hypnotized the salivating fool, leading him to what will surely be his grisly death.

Above them, another young witch flies over the scene, straddling a torn PS2 controller cord fashioned into a broom. For reasons never mentioned, she is dressed as PaRappa.

At their Tokyo Game Show press conference today, Sony finally revealed how the PS3 got its groove back. Kaz Hirai announced that the DualShock 3 -- a Sixaxis controller with rumble -- will be out this November in Japan and Spring 2008 everywhere else.

Future games, such as Metal Gear Solid 4, will incorporate rumble technology, while older titles can enable rumble through software updates. No price has been given, nor was there any discussion on whether the Sixaxis would be phased out.
TGS07: DualShock 3 unveiled, PS3 learns to shake, rattle and roll originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 23:48:00 EST. Following the not-so-surprising announcement of a rumble-ready PlayStation 3 controller, Sony sent out a press release to list all of the titles that are compatible with the new controller. The list features pretty much every title in the console's library except for flOw and Lair.

Also mentioned in the press release is that "PS3 titles that are already in the market may become compatible with the rumble feature through software update." It sounds like a no-brainer, but we're hoping this means Sony will set the trend by updating all first-party games from Resistance to Heavenly Sword. For sake of being complete, we've alphabetized the list of compatible titles and posted it after the break.
Continue reading Released PS3 titles may become rumble compatible

Released PS3 titles may become rumble compatible originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 23:39:00 EST. Kaz Hirai has come to the Tokyo Game Show bearing good news indeed: Sony's finally putting out a SIXAXIS with rumble, the DualShock 3. The controller will look exactly like the SIXAXIS, and is going to be hitting Japan this November, and North America and Europe in spring 2008. A few games in development have the function already, including Metal Gear Solid 4, and existing games can be updated with rumble over the PlayStation Network. Of course, the beans were spilled by EA earlier today, and Kaz says Sony let developers know about the controller as soon as it was decided upon, which would explain all the other leaks over the year. What Sony has constantly described as a technical difficulty stemming from the motion sensitivity of the controller has apparently been overcome, but it's still hard not to pin it all on that Immersion lawsuit no matter how much spin Sony puts on things. There's no word on price for the DualShock 3.
Continue reading Sony's DualShock 3 is finally official: PS3 gets rumble

Sony's DualShock 3 is finally official: PS3 gets rumble originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Sep 2007 22:08:00 EST. DualShock 3 will be compatible with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, allegedly reports Japanese publication Dengeki PlayStation. The sparse detail was provided by a NeoGAF poster (sans scan) rounding up the magazine's news and has fueled speculation that the gamepad silhouette featured on the official GT5 website (pictured above) is actually a DualShock 3, rather than the assumed SixAxis. With Prologue scheduled for October (in Japan), the next logical assumption is that DualShock 3 will launch alongside the dressed up demo. But these are uninformed guesses, folks. An adventurous and skillful modder has managed to turn a Wii remote into an Xbox 360 controller with middleware help from the PS2 control scheme -- it's as if all the console makers are working in harmony for this one hack. Try humming this to the tune of "Dem Bones" (actually, don't, because we're not even going to try to fit the rhyme scheme):

The Xbox 360 is connected to the XFPS PS2 to 360 adapter

... which is connected to a big black box Microcontroller "with custom firmware emulating a PS2 controller"

... which is connected to a Samsung Q1 PC with custom Wii remote firmware

... which is connected via Bluetooth to the Wii remote itself.

Full details of the process can be found here. A video demonstration is embedded after the break that not only shows the control scheme work with Halo 2 but also the thought put into making it a comfortable and viable control scheme (such as anti-acceleration and smoothing algorithms).

[Via Engadget; thanks, Chris]
Continue reading Playing Xbox 360 with your Wii remote

Playing Xbox 360 with your Wii remote originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 17:25:00 EST. Those of you disappointed by the PSP Lite's omission of a second analog nub may want to settle down into a comfy chair and peruse patent #0070174531 which envisions a "control docking unit" that could be "configured to accept a portable processing unit and provide alternate control operation of the portable processing unit." It's a stretch, but we think "portable processing unit" is patentspeak for "PlayStation Portable."

Though the attached image above shows a DualShock, the patent specifies a "wired or wireless communication link" which gives us dreams of wire-free Sixaxis PSP control. Couple that with the PSP Lite's TV-out functionality and whaddya got? ... actually, it looks an awful lot like a PS2. But one you can take with you, so count us in.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
PSP patent presents possible DualShock / Sixaxis controls originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Jul 2007 12:45:00 EST. After being sued for $91 million dollars following the DualShock's alleged incorporation of Immersion rumble technology, Sony has paid up and entered into a new business arrangement with its former courtroom nemesis. The GameDaily BIZ report notes that both parties are currently evaluating the possibilities such an agreement would entail for the PlayStation line of products.

As Sony's director of corporate communications puts it, "We are very pleased to have reached a cooperative agreement with Immersion regarding the use of its advanced vibration technology (haptics technology). We look forward to working closely with them as we explore new and innovative ways to utilize this technology in PlayStation products." A future, rumbling version of the Sixaxis remains a distinct possibility and certainly one that could easily be supported by developers in upcoming games -- even if it is a bit last-gen.

Sony and Immersion reach settlement, feel good vibrations originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 19:57:00 EST. Namely, Sony is just as confused as its fanbase. If only someone had a recording of the actual award being announced, this could be put to rest. Here's how it went down, hopefully convincing you Sony did not lie. This time, they were misled just as the public was.

When Sony was given the Emmy for "technological innovation for device controller", they were slightly befuddled since the SIXAXIS had yet to really show off its mad skills, but accepted the honor anyway. Turns out the award was for the Dual Shock, the previous incarnation of the Sony controller. Keep in mind that, either way, they got an Emmy. Nintendo also won the same award for its D-Pad, which is more than understandable.

SCEA public relations head David Karraker, upon being asked about the mishap, recounted the award that he personally accepted: "I accepted the award myself and all they said was that the award was for 'technological innovation for device controller' ... but looking back, they never really did say for which one." Heck, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences even approved of Sony's initial public statement which mentioned the SIXAXIS five times, including this title: "Sony Computer Entertainment America Wins Emmy Award for PLAYSTATION 3 SIXAXIS Wireless Controller." So, who's at fault? Quite clearly, it's NATAS. Not Sony -- they were confused too. Let's give them some ice cream and put this behind us.
Sony's not to blame for SIXAXIS/DualShock Emmy nonsense, okay? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Jan 2007 10:30:00 EST. With more than 60,000 views and counting, this video of a PSP modded with two analog sticks, is gaming's hottest video on YouTube. Well, at least according to the Joystiq folks. It makes sense, though: this is the single most wanted feature for a PSP revision. Although this modification won't allow for true analog on the right hand (it's simply replicating the actions of the face buttons), it should feel quite natural for DualShock (and Sixaxis) players. However, as cool as this mod is, I wouldn't want my system to look like that.

See also:
Analog stick from the "ghetto"
Beef jerky + magic = PSP analog stick
Dual analog PSP becomes gaming's hottest video originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 02 Dec 2006 12:45:00 EST. TeamXtender is in the planning stages of creating an adapter that your Xbox 360 controller would plug into to allow full PS2 Dualshock support and would also allow keyboard/mouse connectivity. What did he say? He said that Kaz Hirai is "really saying two things. One is that it's technically possible but that the cost is prohibitive-which again I find astounding-and the second thing he's saying is that they're making a decision to go with this tilt control in place of rumble because they think that's what consumers will appreciate in their gameplay. So, on those two issues again I'm very surprised and shocked because I don't believe either to be the case." Yeah, yeah. We know it's not exactly what everyone wants. But... what's the price issue?

Viegas assured GameDaily that "our engineers in less than a day had come up with three solutions; one is filtering and the other is processing and neither one is incrementally an increase in the cost. Both are using software to filter out the different commands-tilt vs. vibration-so that both can work side by side, and neither solution will add an increase to the cost of the system... We knew how to technically solve their problems and now we know how to do it without adding any incremental cost." So... it can be done and not be costly? Well, if Sony won't listen, why not go through a third party?

In regards to third party controllers, Immersion says they aren't entirely in control... they're at Sony's mercy, in a sense. To quote: "It appears that Sony has not yet ruled out a third-party solution... but if [developers] don't support vibration in the game, that's going to cause a problem. The controller would have no commands to receive from the gameplay. Sony's in some control there and Sony's also in control of the console, so they can filter out vibration commands; essentially if they don't want vibration they can shut it down and it appears that's what they're doing..."

So, those three quotes show us a few things: If Sony stops being stubborn, we could see a rumble/tilt controller that would cost nothing extra... maybe marginally more. Also, third party controllers won't matter unless Sony and game developers decide to implement vibration into their software, or else it's useless. It is sad, but give it a year or two and we can probably see some sort of agreement. You can't possible be stubborn forever and ever, can you?
Immersion wants Kaz to understand -- rumble + motion = possible originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 07 Oct 2006 20:15:00 EST. From the very first issue of PSM Magazine from September 1997 (found as a PDF on Retro Gaming -- click on the image to the right), a Kotaku reader pointed out an article on page 16 talks about the then-imminent US release of the PlayStation One dual analog controller. The US version had one slight difference than its Japanese brethren: no rumble.

The article cited "another company" (Immersion?) who owned the patent to the vibration technology -- my, how times have changed. However, the other theory (not from Sony) is that the new-fangled vibration technology, "however slight, eventually causes the controller to break" after extended use. Obviously, with such a powerful seismic force, there's no way Sony could figure out how to combine rumble and motion sensing. Oh, wait a second ...
Continue reading Sony pulled rumble from PSOne controllers?

Sony pulled rumble from PSOne controllers? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Jul 2006 21:25:00 EST. Of course, having just stolen a Dual Shock 2 from the lonely demo unit in your local games retailer, palpable excitement is something you have in droves, not to mention rampant kleptomania. The vibration emitted by most of today's controllers also adds an extra level of immersion to games like Silent Hill and Halo -- just ask Immersion, they named their company after the idea.

Don't ask Sony, however, since it's a touchy subject. Currently appealing against a court ruling in favor of Immersion's claims that they treaded upon specific patents when they created the Dual Shock controllers (like the one you stole), Sony has come under some fire for dropping rumble functionality from the PS3 controller entirely. An accusatory finger was pointed at the newly implemented motion sensing technology, a move interpreted by some as Sony being unwilling to hand licensing fees over to Immersion. Whether or not that's the case is still up for debate, though Immersion has now unveiled new technology which indicates, at the very least, that a rumbling Dual Shake may still find its way into hands (especially thieving ones).

The "TouchSense" technology for use in next-gen controllers promises added realism in addition to full compatibility with motion and tilt sensing devices. "Because the speed at which a user moves the controller is much slower than the frequencies generated by TouchSense technology, the two signals can be differentiated using filtering and other techniques." Their statement goes on to say that Immersion "offers engineering services to implement the technology within a particular console system."

Will Sony grab this opportunity, or let it slip through their fingers? Is it really that big of a deal?

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Dual Shake may rumble still originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Jun 2006 18:25:00 EST. Instead, follow these simple (?) instructions to get your Dual Shock rocking on your laptop. You'll need: a spare parallel PCMCIA card; the "controller module" from a PS2; hacksaw; belt sander; lots of glue; a strong desire to have built-in Dual Shock support in your laptop.

We feel obligated to remind readers there are USB adapters that deliver such functionality sans belt-sanding (like this one), but this was never about convenience. This gets us to wondering if Sony's Bluetooth HID-compatible DualShake will work with computers that support Bluetooth. Seems like a sure thing, right? Tell that to the Bluetooth Microsoft mouse that refuses to work on my Mac. Here's the official explanation:

"Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK and DUALSHOCK 2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation 2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor."

Might we also add that this is a convenient way for Sony to distance itself from the troubles surrounding the DualShock technology?

[Via Sony news release; included in press kit distributed at E3 keynote]
New PS3 controller loses DualShock vibration originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 May 2006 02:30:00 EST. Sony's now the only name in-line for PS3 controllers either on the pad or in the press releases (see "the new PS3 controller").
Continue reading PS3 pad loses DualShock name and vibration but picks up Wii-esque motion detection and wireless connectivity

PS3 pad loses DualShock name and vibration but picks up Wii-esque motion detection and wireless connectivity originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 May 2006 00:58:00 EST. There's enough drama in this case to fill a television soap opera--or, better yet, a police orcrime-scene procedural.

For the full contents of the article, you'll need to log in as a subscriber to theJournal through the picture above or the Read link below. We don't know to what extent this courtroom dramawill affect the "boomerang" PS3 prototype controller design, future DualShock 2 availability andcompatibility, or any possible delays to the new system itself, but Sony's separate appeal in federal court has yet tobe ruled on, leaving the company one more crucial legal avenue to pursue in this matter.

[Via Joystiq]
Shocking DualShock case still not going Sony's way originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Mar 2006 20:27:00 EST.
