<em>[Editor's note: We played the Wii version of this game. If you're worried about the graphics being different for the PS3 version ... you're probably looking at the wrong hands-on article.]<br /><br />Mega Man 2</em> is my earliest truly memorable gameplay experience, so it's a bizarre feeling to be getting hands-on time with a game that looks identical fifteen years later. Make no bones about it, though. <em>Mega Man 9</em> looks <em>identical</em> to the old NES games from the series. Capcom said they were taking the series back to its roots, and that's what they've done; difficulty included. <br /><br />If you've never played a NES <em>Mega Man </em>game, firstly -- shame on you! Secondly, you'll probably be confused by <em>Mega Man 9</em>'s graphics. These are pixelated 8-bit sprite graphics at their finest. In fact, the game looks like it borrows assets from <em>Mega Man 2</em>. Particularly the forest level, where the background looks almost identical. <br /><br />Speaking of levels, there were only two available and they were both hard as nails. <em>Mega Man 9</em> is going to make you weep like no modern game has done in years. During the levels I played, <em>Mega Man</em> doesn't have any particularly special abilities. No charge beam and no slide tackle. Rush returns with a spring in his back, letting you reach higher ledges, but that's it. There's no indication whether you'll be able to pick up these skills later in the game or not, but I'm hoping so. Even <em>Mega Man 4 </em>had the charge beam.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/ps3-fanboy-hands-on-mega-man-9/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Mega Man 9</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/ps3-fanboy-hands-on-mega-man-9/">PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Mega Man 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 21:30:00 EST. After being privy to everything we heard, saw and played at E3 2008 we'd like to hear what you thought of Microsoft's overall performance. With suitable OMG-megatons like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Final-Fantasy-XIII/">Final Fantasy XIII</a></em>, awesome exclusivity announcements like DLC in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Fallout-3/">Fallout 3</a></em> and rad showings of games like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Gears-of-War-2/">Gears of War 2</a></em> -- it seems like it was a great show! But ... noticeable absences like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Alan-Wake/">Alan Wake</a></em>, the controversy surrounding the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/microsoft-bungie-announcement-held-back-for-special-event/">Bungie announcement</a> and debatable decisions like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/new-xbox-experience">dashboard revamp</a> this poll could go either way. So, X3F Army we ask you. How did Microsoft do overall?<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/fanpoll-how-was-microsofts-e308-showing/#poll17216">View Poll</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/fanpoll-how-was-microsofts-e308-showing/">Fanpoll: How was Microsoft's E308 showing?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. The room is stuffed with a handful of game journalists. It's dark. Drifting from the (very nice) speaker system are the sounds of ocean waves lapping against a boat. On screen, Lara Croft stands on the wooden deck wearing scuba gear. Thrifty girl that she is, it looks like Lara didn't want to spring for a wetsuit with legs in it. Apparently not worried by the deep cold of the ocean, she dives into the water. It's time for me to play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/tomb-raider-underworld-e3-trailer-blows-our-minds-in-reverse/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Tomb Raider Underworld</span></a>.<br />

During our stay in LA this week, we were able to tag 35+ industry developers, producers, PR folks and pretty much anyone that was willing to get tagged. It was entertaining, a source of free advertising and, darnit, we had fun doing it. Thanks to all the folks who were willing to play along with the sticker fun, especially those who slapped a sticker on their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3fs-e3-sticker-gallery/921254/full/">forehead</a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3fs-e3-sticker-gallery/923919/full">mouth</a>. Too cool.<br /><br />Anyway, we just uploaded another batch (the final batch) of X3F sticker photos including <em>Dead Space </em>producer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3fs-e3-sticker-gallery/932613/full/">Chuck Beaver</a>, <em>Mirror's Edge</em>'s own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3fs-e3-sticker-gallery/932614/full/">Nick Channon</a>, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3fs-e3-sticker-gallery/932615/full/">SouthPeak crew</a> as well as the one, Joystiq's only, our main boss guy who keeps us employed ... <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3fs-e3-sticker-gallery/932612/full/">CHRIS GRANT</a>! Oh, and don't mind the pic quality. We had to use our cell phone camera due to a digital camera going MIA for a bit. Anyhoo, long live the X3F stickering.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/e308-x3f-sticker-gallery-the-final-entry/">E308 X3F Sticker Gallery: The final entry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 17:45:00 EST. Looking for simple answers to your Xbox 360 dashboard redesign questions? Here are a few points to take away from the new Xbox experience:<br />
<ul>
    <li>"There's nothing to announce" right now regarding a keyword search for the Marketplace. We hope for some kind of searching option or a better layout for content<br /></li>
    <li>Playing games from the hard drive will work fine for multi-disc games; in fact, you can pick which discs you want to rip (but a disc swap for the correct disc in the drive is required)<br /></li>
    <li>As an example, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/details-on-the-new-xbox-experience-search-hard-drive-play-ale/">Joystiq</a> was told that<span style="font-style: italic;"> <em> Devil May Cry 4</em></span><em> </em>is approximately a 4 or 5GB installation and takes about 10 minutes to copy onto a harddive: PS3 installation is roughly 18-25 mins <br /></li>
    <li>You'll need to keep the disc in the drive the entire time. This is about speeding up load times and to check if you own the title -- the disc will not spin so no more jet noises<br /></li>
    <li>Xbox 360 notifications look the same but are actually very cleaned up and look sharper -- the sounds are all the same<br /></li>
    <li>Yes, you can still use your gamertag pics and your themes (they look cleaner and more crisp now, an example of what it could look like is above) -- example of a gamerpic in action is in the top right corner of the image above</li>
    <em> </em></ul>

The turnout was great (something close to 300 readers attended), we ate some pizza, chit-chatted some, gave out a couple hundred pounds of swag and the highlight of the meetup was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-2"><em>Rock Band 2</em></a>. You read correctly, the guys from Harmonix showed up with <em>Rock Band 2</em> (which is freakin' amazing btw) and new instruments in hand to let everyone try out the new setup. All in all it was a great way to close out the E3 week and for those who attended, we send a gigantic "thank you!" your way. Without your support we'd be nothing but a few sad and lonely fanboys.<br /><br />Check out the photographic reader meetup recap below and for more meetup coverage, jump on over to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/live-from-the-joystiq-post-e3-2008-party/">Joystiq</a> and browse their photos too.<br /><br /><br />

Simply stated, the expo is now over and we're jetting out of Los Angeles in the next few hours. This in turn means a few things. The first, most obvious conclusion being that WE SURVIVED E3! The long hours we put in all week, experienced by not only those in LA but team X3F back at Fanboy Towers were grueling. But our brains haven't exploded under the stress so we can't complain too much. As a result of our leaving of E3 we probably will not be updating as much as we should be today. We'll do our best, but no promises. Finally, you should be seeing some E3 wrap-up coverage heading into the weekend and carrying over into early next week. We have a backlog of E3 hands on impressions and general news that (due to there only being 24 hours in a day) we just couldn't get to.<br /><br />Again, thanks to everyone for sharing a memorable E3 2008 with all of us at X3F. It was exciting, it was stressful, but overall we'll be walking away from this week with a grin on our face and dreams of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2">special</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/geometry-wars-2">Xbox</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space">360</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fable-2">releases</a> that will be coming later this year. Remember that epic trailer showcasing the new <em>South Park</em> game for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a>? All 2.4 seconds of it. No details were dropped regarding what type of game it would be but the <a href="http://www.southparkstudios.com/news/3492">South Park Studios</a> official site is already trying to fuel the hype train.<br />
<br />
A posting moments after it was unveiled at the conference reads: "A brand new <em>South Park</em> game is coming to Xbox Live in 2009. That's all we've got for now, but stay tuned for more details over the next few months. Let the speculations begin!"<br />
<br />
We don't have any guesses on what it will be but we hope it has nothing to do with that awful <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Park_(video_game)">first-person shooter</a> or the terrible <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Park_Rally">kart racing game</a> or that laughable <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Park:_Chef%27s_Luv_Shack">mini-game collection</a> or ... wait, are we supposed to speculate on whether or not it's going to suck? Valve's Doug Lombardi (seen muzzled by an X3F sticker at E3 2008) recently cleared up some confusion regarding the content of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Portal-Still-Alive/">Portal: Still Alive</a></em> for the Xbox Live Arcade in an <a href="http://www.oxm.co.uk/article.php?id=5330">interview with OXM</a>. <span class="text_article_body">"It's just a series of new challenges," Lombardi told the magazine. "[<em>Portal: Still Alive</em> is] another way for people to experience Portal, without having to buy the full Orange Box."<br /><br />We can't say we're surprised. With such a focus on story we didn't expect <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Valve/">Valve</a> to do anything exclusively for the Xbox that would factor into actual canon of the series.<br /><br />Lombardi later detailed that Valve has new projects in the works for the Xbox 360 but remain firm on its disinterest for PS3 and Wii development. It was also confirmed that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Team-Fortess-2/">Team Fortess 2</a></em> that the achievements and content added to the PC version of the game will come to the Xbox 360 at some point, when </span><span class="text_article_body">Valve has worked out how it wants to package and release that content.<br /></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/valves-lombardi-talks-portal-xbla-achievements-and-other-platf/">Valve's Lombardi talks Portal XBLA, achievements and other platforms</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 11:30:00 EST. Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton discussed Sony's take on the recent announcement that <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Final-Fantasy-XIII/">Final Fantasy XIII</a></em> will release simultaneously on the Xbox 360 with the PS3 with a round-table of journalists, including our own team at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/sony-disappointed-by-ffxiii-for-360-announcement/">Joystiq</a>. "Am I disappointed by it? Yes," Tretton told the group, adding: "Am I surprised by it? No." He was quick to stress that the game remains a PS3 exclusive in Japan, but that "seeing as there isn't that big of a [PS3] installed base in [there], I don't know how big of a coup that is for us."<br /><br />Speaking on the subject of paying off publishers for exclusivity, Tretton told Joystiq "[Sony] invested so much money in the [PS3] hardware" that it simply "can't write checks for exclusive software."<br /><br />While popular theory is that Microsoft paid Square Enix off for its recent handfull of upcoming releases, word around the industry campfire points at a decision made by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Square-Enix/">Square Enix</a> months ago to focus on multiplatform development that saw <em>Final Fantasy XIII</em> land on the Xbox 360. With a high install base and solid attach rate for the Xbox 360 in North America and Europe many developers are forgoing exclusivity in order to lessen the blow of "next-gen" game development. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a> has been a prime example of this point with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Devil-May-Cry-4/">Devil May Cry 4</a></em>; which saw better sales on the Xbox 360.<br /><br />Regardless of the situation, Square Enix is happy to bring the experience to as many people as possible and as gamers we all should be too.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/e308-sony-disappointed-by-ffxiii-for-360/">E308: Sony 'disappointed' by FFXIII for 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 10:45:00 EST. Before we left to go to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/E3-2008/">E3 2008</a> we each outlined our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3f-top-three-e3/916667/">Top Three Interests</a> for the big show. Nearly every one of our interests were available for us to poke and prod at but what about your interests? Asking you to list your E3 anticipations, we molded our content to suit your needs. Why? Because you're the X3F Army!<br /><br />Jump in for a list of the games you asked about with links to all the news and content we could find, steal and bribe our way to get! We couldn't get them all and there is a ton more not listed but check it out and let us know what you thought of our coverage.<br /><br />Oh and by the way, we are SO not even done covering E3 2008. During our guided demo of Microsoft's upcoming stable of XBLA games, Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/microsofts-scott-austin-talks-xbox-delisting-and-delays/">Scott Austin</a> informed us that all the games on display would be available in the next four to six weeks on Xbox Live Arcade. All of 'em. If you've been reading the impressions on Joystiq, you'll know that this a reason to be excited. For the record, the XBLA games being shown by Microsoft are:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/24/bionic-commando-rearmed-multiplayer-video-blowout/"><em>Bionic Commando Rearmed</em></a></li>

There's really no way to get around this, so here it is: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/galaga-legions"><em>Galaga Legions</em></a> might as well be called <em>Galaga Championship Edition</em>. It's made by the same <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Namco/">Namco</a> team that made <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pac-man-ce"><em>Pac-Man Championship Edition</em></a> and it achieves the same success: reinventing an arcade classic and making it relevant again. At the same time, it is definitely still <em>Galaga</em> in much the same way that <em>Pac-Man CE</em> is still <em>Pac-Man</em>. It's new, it's classic, it's pretty. Period.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-hands-on-galaga-legions/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308 hands-on: Galaga Legions</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-hands-on-galaga-legions/">E308 hands-on: Galaga Legions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 18:15:00 EST. That said, a loose lipped source did mention a mini-Lancer, so that's why we were accepting of the thought. Still, we wouldn't count on a mini Lancer being in the LE. Sorry for getting your hopes up. <br /><br />There has been a bunch of <em>Gears of War 2</em> related news coming out of E3 this week including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/gears-2-lobby-playlists-and-matchmaking-detailed/">matchmaking specifics</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/e308-gears-of-war-2-rendezvous-trailer/">new footage</a> as well as a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/e308-gears-of-war-2-five-player-co-op-horde-mode/">new multiplayer mode</a> getting revealed. But also exciting was the reveal of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/e308-gears-of-war-2-screens-renders-and-art/"><em>Gears of War 2 </em>Limited Edition</a>'s contents which may include some mini Lancer love.<br /><br />Thanks to the kind <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=69460">Gamestop</a> folks, we know that for the extra $10 price of Limited Edition admission, you'll get steel DVD case, a 48 page "Beneath the Surface: An Inside Look at <em>Gears of War 2</em>" mini-book, a bonus behind the scenes DVD as well as a code to unlock an in-game gold plated Lancer. Not too shabby. But if you look closer, pictured to the right of the box looks to be an included Lancer mini-replica of some sort even though Gamestop doesn't list it as part of the contents. Funny thing is that this week, during the E3 festivities, we heard from an anonymous but totally reliable source that there will in fact be a mini-Lancer included in the <em>GoW2 LE</em>. Take it for what you will, but we'll be dreaming our mini Lancer dreams all week long.<br /><br />[Thanks, BAK6E]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/rumor-gears-2-le-includes-mini-lancer-replica/">Rumor: Gears 2 LE includes mini Lancer replica [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 17:45:00 EST. A few things. First, I love the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill"><em>Silent Hill</em></a> series. Second, E3 really isn't the venue for demoing a <em>Silent Hill</em> game. Even in Konami's relatively quiet meeting room, it was impossible to hear any dialogue or music in <em>Silent Hill: Homecoming</em> -- headphones were available, but they were broken ... grrr. Considering that the soundscape of any given <em>Silent Hill</em> game is responsible for half of the atmosphere (arguably more), it makes it hard to judge how the game <em>feels</em>. So, you'll just have to settle for a look at how the game plays.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-homecoming-5-21-08/">Silent Hill: Homecoming (5-21-08)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-homecoming-5-21-08/#818447"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/shh5-12-38_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-homecoming-5-21-08/#818446"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/shh5-12-29_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-homecoming-5-21-08/#818445"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/shh5-19-08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-homecoming-5-21-08/#818444"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/shh5-12-83_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-homecoming-5-21-08/#818443"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/shh5-12-55_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/joystiq-e3-hands-on-silent-hill-homecoming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq E3 hands-on: Silent Hill: Homecoming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/joystiq-e3-hands-on-silent-hill-homecoming/">Joystiq E3 hands-on: Silent Hill: Homecoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 17:30:00 EST. We're of course talking about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space"><em>Dead Space</em></a>, EA's twisted sci-fi horror game that isn't only beautiful artistically, but also offers equally stunning gameplay and innovative gameplay elements to match. At Activision's non-E3 conference Tuesday,<em> Guitar Hero</em> director Brian Bright surprised attendees confirming that any guitar and drum controllers players own for other games on the Xbox 360 will be compatible with <em><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Guitar-Hero-World-Tour/">Guitar Hero: World Tour</a></em>.<br /> </em>
<p>This news comes as quite a shock considering the current state of controller compatibility between the two music franchises -- a recent update apparently made all guitar controllers compatible with <em>Guitar Hero: Aerosmith</em> but we've heard of some issues.</p>
<p>You may be asking yourself how the drums will work, considering <em>Guitar Hero: World Tour</em> drums use five-inputs while <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RockBand/">Rock Band</a></em> uses four (see center of image above). According to <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/xbox-rock-band.html">Wired</a>, Activision promises that using the <em>Rock Band</em> drums will cause the game to adjust the title to four inputs only. Now we wonder, will plugging in the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/konamis-rock-revolution-drums-revealed/">Rock Revolution</a> </em>controller bring the input count to seven?<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/rock-band-controllers-to-work-with-guitar-hero-world-tour/">Rock Band controllers to work with Guitar Hero: World Tour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 15:10:00 EST. Some guy over at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/covenant-playable-in-halo-wars/">Joystiq</a> named Richard Mitchell, swear that name sounds familiar, was able to finagle some details from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Ensemble-Studios/">Ensemble Studios</a> during a demo of the game. Ensemble confirmed that the evil Covenant will be playable in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo-Wars/">Halo Wars</a></em>. The only catch is that the Covenant will not have a campaign mode and the option to play as them is in multiplayer only. Now, if they would just confirm the Flood already -- we could I go home! <em>Halo Wars</em> is set to release sometime during the Spring of 2009. Looking for more information? <br />Ah, sports games. You do not get enough love from us. But here's a freebie! <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Madden-09/">Madden NFL 09</a></em> lands in stores this August and, so far, looks like a solid entry into the franchise. The latest trailer, now available on the Xbox Live Markeplace, focuses on the in-game celebration and frustration animations. Shockingly given permission for celebrations by the (usually) tight-laced NFL, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EA-Sports/">EA Sports</a> shows off a a handful of new moves you can expect to see in the endzone. Let's hope EA consulted with <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifeJ_3NA6IU">Ocho Cinco</a> for the sake of realism (Sorry, maybe three of you know what I'm even talking about.)<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-madden-nfl-09-celebrations-and-sadness-trailer/">E308: Madden NFL 09 Celebrations &amp; Sadness trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 12:00:00 EST. <br /><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Bionic-Commando/">Bionic Commando</a></em>, from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Capcom/">Capcom</a>, is a strange beast. Traditionally players would attack the developer for changing the classic series so drastically but from what we've seen the game looks great. Sweeping landscapes and dreads? Sign us up. Check out this gameplay trailer, now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace, and tell us how you feel about the urbanized remake for the classic action title.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-bionic-commando-gameplay-trailer/">E308: Bionic Commando gameplay trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 11:30:00 EST. <br />Bing-NO! Yeah, we didn't win in our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/10/microsofts-e3-08-conference-lets-play-bingo/">network-wide Bingo game</a>. But we came close! A few things here might need some gentle coaxing to fit but we think it works. It isn't like we won anyway right? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/e308-gears-of-war-2-five-player-co-op-horde-mode/" style="font-style: italic;">Gears of War 2</a> has a 5 player online co-op mode, not 4 players - but we're counting it just because. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo-Wars/" style="font-style: italic;">Halo Wars</a> got a release date window for Spring 2009 - again counting it. The new SKU, price cut and 60GB are generally accurate and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-bungie-net-revealed-countdown-cancelled/">if plans weren't canceled</a> at the last minute we would have seen what Bungie is working on (hint, it's a Halo game!). Don't get too mad that we're taking liberties with this list, if we really wanted to we could argue that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Lips/" style="font-style: italic;">LIPS</a> motion control would count for G5 but we're skipping it!<br /><br />Lastly, we threw a dart at a wall of crazy and came up with <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Gear Online</span>, who knew one of those crazy ideas (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Final-Fantasy-XIII/" style="font-style: italic;">Final Fantasy XIII</a>) would have come true!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-microsoft-conference-bingo-results/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Microsoft conference Bingo results</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-microsoft-conference-bingo-results/">E308: Microsoft conference Bingo results</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 11:00:00 EST. <br />Utilizing the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Call-of-Duty-4">Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare</a></em> engine, <em>James Bond</em> returns to gaming in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Quantum-of-Solace/">James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace</a></em> from developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Treyarch/">Treyarch</a>. Shown off at Activision's non-E3 press conference, <em>Quantum of Solace</em> takes place within the story of both <em>Casino Royale</em> and the upcoming<em> Bond</em> film of the same name. Starring new Bond, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0185819/">Daniel Craig</a>, the game is presented in a first-person perspective but uses a cover system that snaps to a third-person view -- a la <em>Tom Clancy's Rainbox Six Vegas</em> style. Surprisingly (because it is based on a license) the game looks fantastic and we can't wait to see more. <em>James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace</em> hits shelves this November.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/treyarchs-james-bond-quantum-of-solace-in-motion/">Treyarch's James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace in motion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 10:30:00 EST. Microsoft in <em>The Case of the Missing Haloes </em>continues. The <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2008/07/halo-bungie-e3.html">L.A. Times</a> spoke with Xbox senior VP <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/DonMattrick/">Don Mattrick</a> regarding the omission of Bungie's announcement from its Monday press conference. Mattrick told the writers that Microsoft decided to nix the reveal during the show to "save time."<br /><br />Let that sink in for a moment, you 5+ million <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo/">Halo</a></em> fans. Time. Word around the campfire is Microsoft's conference was originally set to run for two-and-a-half hours, but Mattrick wanted to cut the show down to 90 minutes. Of the items to be cut from the show? Anything named <em>Halo</em>. Mattrick told the paper that Microsoft's conference already contained, "an embarrassment of riches," so the <em>Halo</em> trump cards were removed from the docket.<br /><br />At least we still got to see that sweet <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Lips/">Lips</a></em> presentation though. Now <em>that's</em> a franchise!<br /><br />Surely it had nothing to do with the fear of taking attention away from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Final-Fantasy-XIII/">Final Fantasy XIII</a></em> for 360. Balderdash! Or, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Gears-of-War-2/">Gears of War 2</a></em>. Poppycock!<br /><br />Now the question remains, when will we see the new <strike>secret</strike> <em>Halo</em> game Bungie is working on? "We felt we could do this game more justice with a more dedicated event," Mattrick said in the L.A. Times piece. Sounds like it was planned all along, it's just funny that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Bungie/">Bungie</a> took it the way they did. It's almost like they were left out of the loop.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/microsoft-bungie-announcement-held-back-for-special-event/">Microsoft: Bungie announcement 'held back' for special event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 10:00:00 EST. With a secret performance no less. And after the making an eight block walk (maybe it was only three) from the Los Angeles Convention Center, we arrived ready to rock. During the pre-show festivities they had baskets of candy strewn about, an open bar and setup a stage for attendees to get their <em>Rock Band 2 </em>play on. Which we definitely had to try because it was a sold out audience you know. Finally, the icing on the <em>Rock Band</em> Bash cake was an hour plus long performance by non other than the secret performance guest: The Who. Oh yeah, it's okay to be jealous. Wow. We're really still doing these. Ahem. It's late, once again, but it's still E3 and that means you get another special edition of the Xbox 360 Fancast. Today we talk about our impressions of the XBLA offerings at E3 (<em>Castle Crashers</em>!), <em>Halo Wars</em>, <em>Silent Hill Homecoming</em>, and much much more. Oh, and yes, we're still super tired and super loopy. Alongside <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/hands-on-banjo-kazooie-nuts-and-bolts-vehicle-creation/"><em>Banjo Kazooie: Nuts &amp; Bolts</em></a> at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/fable-2-and-banjo-reception-in-pictures/">Microsoft press reception</a> earlier this week was Lionhead's anticipated <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fable-2"><em>Fable 2</em></a>. For the first time, I was able to test out all of the game's combat options, perform social interactions -- including playing with the adorable dog -- and glimpse the game's story, which once again begins during the hero's childhood. While much has been said about how <span style="font-style: italic;">Fable 2</span> innovates on the concepts in the first game, what I really took away from the demo is that the game is essentially just more of what was great about<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>the original <span style="font-style: italic;">Fable</span> with plenty of refinements. In other words, it's good stuff with <span style="font-style: italic;">more</span> good stuff added to it.<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>Read on for new hands on details.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-hands-on-with-fable-2s-combat-and-story/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Hands on with Fable 2's combat and story</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-hands-on-with-fable-2s-combat-and-story/">E308: Hands on with Fable 2's combat and story</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 05:15:00 EST. Since it was first announced, it was made clear that Ensemble Studios' goal in creating <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-wars"><em>Halo Wars</em></a> was to do for real time strategy games what <em>Halo</em> did for first person shooters: take a genre predominantly played on the PC and make it work on a console. Bridging the gap between a console controller and the combination of keyboard and mouse is no easy task. Beyond that, RTS games just don't feel like they <em>belong</em> on consoles. So, Ensemble set out to build an RTS title for the Xbox 360 from the ground up, a game designed to work with a controller and <em>work</em>. Did Ensemble do it? Based on my time with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e308">E3</a> demo, I'm inclined to say yes.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-hands-on-with-halo-wars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Hands on with Halo Wars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-hands-on-with-halo-wars/">E308: Hands on with Halo Wars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 03:30:00 EST. <br /><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Gears-of-War-2/">Gears of War 2</a></em> is arguably the biggest and most anticipated release on any platform for Holiday 2008. Solidifying itself as a force to be reckoned with, <em>Gears 2</em> was the poster child at Microsoft's E3 press conference. Showcasing a new single-player level, design director <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/x3fs-e3-sticker-gallery/921254/">Cliff Bleszinski</a> walked attendees through the new <em>Gears</em> experience. Intricate and beautiful environments, large sweeping battles and a horizontally moving elevator? Epic win. Pun is completely intended. While spending some quality hands on time with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-wars"><em>Halo Wars</em></a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008">E3</a> (hint: it's good, more on that later today), Microsoft's Jim Ying, who was guiding our demo, gave us some great news for <em><a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/tag/halo">Halo</a> </em>fans (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/17/halo-3-bought-by-52-of-us-xbox-360-owners/">there are lot of them, you know</a>). The Covenant, the alien race hellbent on humanity's destruction, will be playable in Ensemble's upcoming Xbox 360 real time strategy game <em>Halo Wars</em>. The only question that remains now is whether or not the parasitic Flood will also be playable. We asked, but Ensemble isn't talking. For the moment, we'll just have to be satisfied knowing that we can finally slake the Covenant's (Grunty) thirst for blood.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/covenant-playable-in-halo-wars/">Covenant playable in Halo Wars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. When I arrived at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Majesco/">Majesco</a>'s booth on the now <em>very</em> diminished E3 show floor, I saw their offerings and immediately leaped toward <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-away-screens-shuffle-into-view/"><em>Away: Shuffle Dungeon</em></a>. The demo build only had one dungeon available, as well as the world hub and a boss fight.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/away-shuffle-dungeon/">Away: Shuffle Dungeon</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/away-shuffle-dungeon/#923097"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/awsd006ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/away-shuffle-dungeon/#923096"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/awsd007ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/away-shuffle-dungeon/#923095"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/awsd003ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/away-shuffle-dungeon/#923094"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/awsd005ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/away-shuffle-dungeon/#923093"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/awsd004ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-ds-fanboy-hands-on-with-away-shuffle-dungeon/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: DS Fanboy hands-on with Away: Shuffle Dungeon</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-ds-fanboy-hands-on-with-away-shuffle-dungeon/">E308: DS Fanboy hands-on with Away: Shuffle Dungeon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 18:30:00 EST. No, no, no, scratch that, we're PAAARRRTAY ANIMALS! That's just how we roll and that's why we traveled back into Los Angeles last night to attend Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e308-fable-2-and-banjo-kazooie-reception/"><em>Fable 2</em> and <em>Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts &amp; Bolts</em> reception</a>. Which, coincidentally, was in the same venue. Well, not exactly megaton in scale, but there are two brand <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e308-red-and-green-controllers/">new controller colors</a> hitting retailers later this September.<br /><br />High resolution pictures of he <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e308-red-and-green-controllers/927139/full">red and blacked</a> controller as well as the solid <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/greencontroler_straight_thumbnail.jpg">green</a> wireless controllers (with matching battery packs) can be viewed in the gallery below. If you're a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War 2</em></a> fanboy, then we say go with the red / black controller. If you're all about saving the Earth, then go green with the green controller. Then again, if you're all about saving the planet we wouldn't recommend purchasing a factory manufactured petroleum plastic based product. We'd feel dirty.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-up-close-and-personal-new-red-and-green-controllers/">E308: Up close and personal new red and green controllers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 17:30:00 EST. <br />The <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Xbox-Live-Marketplace/">Xbox Live Marketplace</a></em> videos keep rolling in. This new trailer for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Origin/">Project Origin</a></em> showcases a few things, namely: chills, thrills and kills. Alma is back in the non-<em>FEAR</em> named sequel to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/FEAR/">FEAR</a></em>. Immediately the game looks amazing, it looks like ol' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Monolith/">Monolith</a> found the smoothing button on their graphics engine! Seriously though, prior to watching this trailer we just shrugged at a chance to play <em>Project Origin</em> -- but now that it looks this good we will need to check it out!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-project-origin-trailer/">E308: Project Origin trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 17:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Scorpion vs. Batman. Catwoman vs. Subzero. These aren't exactly matchups players have always dreamed of, but Midway is going to do their best to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/first-mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe-gameplay-trailer-is-toasty/">cram two disparate universes into one</a> with <em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em>, the very first Mortal Kombat game on the next-gen systems. Here at E3, Joystiq got to sit down with Brian Lebaron, senior designer for the game, and we talked about why it's OK to set the Flash on fire, why Bizarro probably won't be in the game, and what Midway is doing to Toasty uppercut the fighting genre.<br /> <br /> After the break, find our hands on with the game, as well as details from our chat with Lebaron.
