Capcom is doing something pretty interesting with the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dead-rising-2"><em>Dead Rising 2</em></a>. Prior to its August 31 launch, Capcom will put out <em>Dead Rising 2: Case Zero</em>, an Xbox Live exclusive prequel sans <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/20/dead-rising-2-to-have-online-co-op-and-a-drug-called-zombrex/">co-op</a> that takes place two years after the original and three years prior to the second game. In short: it's distilled <em>Dead Rising 2</em> on a much smaller scale.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/preview-dead-rising-2-case-zero-xbla/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Preview: Dead Rising 2: Case Zero (XBLA)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/preview-dead-rising-2-case-zero-xbla/">Preview: Dead Rising 2: Case Zero (XBLA)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jun 2010 20:09:00 EST. The Entertainment Software Association increased its membership fees by 1,700% during the last two years of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/tag/e3-2007">downsized</a> <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008">E3s</a> (2007-2008), apparently to compensate for revenue that the old E3 used to bring in. <a href="http://au.gamespot.com/news/6205174.html">Gamespot</a> discovered the shocking percentage while digging through the lobbying group's annual accounting to the IRS. The massive fee increase may have a little something to do with why <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/breaking-activision-and-vivendi-discontinue-esa-membership/">Activision</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/lucasarts-leaves-the-esa/">LucasArts</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/23/id-software-leaves-esa/">others</a> decided to leave the organization.<br /><br />We contacted the <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/esa">ESA</a> to find out if this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2009">rebirth</a> of the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/22/e3-2009-brings-back-spectacle-june-2-4-at-lacc/">classic</a>" E3 format would reduce membership fees. CEO Michael Gallagher wrote us: "The positive restructuring of the E3 Expo allowed us to revisit the ESA's dues structure. It is our hope that this new model will make the ESA an attractive and accessible option for small and mid-sized publishers so we can more fully represent our industry's diversity." So, we'll take that as a "yes." Now we wait to see if the reduction brings back the companies that left and, just possibly, welcomes new publishers to the flock.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/esa-fees-increased-1-700-during-min-e3-years-should-reduce-now/">ESA fees increased 1,700% during Min-E3 years, should lower now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 16:07:00 EST. Indeed, I can't help but think that just one of the awesome titles announced in the past week could have prevented much of the animosity hurled at Nintendo following their ho-hum presentation at the summer exhibition. <br /><br /> But then again, Nintendo has always been one to surprise us. They've made good moves and bad, interesting decisions coupled with utterly clueless assumptions, and made us wonder <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_boy">what the hell they were thinking</a> while amazing us with what <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii">they're capable of</a>. Here's the Top 5 biggest surprises unleashed by the Big N. <br /></div>

We find it indicative of the quality of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008/">the past Electronic Entertainment Expo</a> that the biggest piece of news out of the event was not a new high-profile game, or a console redesign -- but rather, the "major" announcement that was <em>not actually announced</em>. We speak, of course, of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Bungiegate">Bungiegate</a> pseudo-scandal, in which the announcement of a new project (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/bungie-teases-july-14th-announcement/">teased by the <em>Halo </em>developer in the weeks leading up to E3</a>) was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/bungie-e3-game-announcement-pulled-by-publisher/">pulled from the Microsoft presentation</a>, and was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/microsoft-pulled-halo-announcement-for-a-stupid-reason/">promised to be revealed at a later date</a>. Judging by <a href="http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&amp;cid=15526">a recent update on Bungie's site</a>, we're guessing that date is quickly approaching.<br /><br />The enigmatic Superintendent, whose tidy countenance <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/13/speculation-bungie-to-debut-xbla-title-tomorrow/">appeared in the pre-E3 teases for the new project</a>, recently reared his head in <a href="http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&amp;cid=15526">a Bungie news update</a>, along with a few <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_Hughes">Howard Hughes-esque</a> demands to "KEEP IT CLEAN." Between the reappearance of the immaculate mascot and hints in the developer's latest weekly update that "dawn is about to break," we think it's safe for the Bungie fanatics among us to ready their anticipatory fingers for <a href="http://www.aarp.org/learntech/computers/howto/a2003-03-28-functionkeys.html">a lengthy F5 session</a>. <br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/20/bungies-superintendent-sighted-new-project-announcement-hinted/">Bungie's Superintendent sighted, announcement hinted at</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 20 Sep 2008 11:30:00 EST. <br />60,000 gamers crammed together in one sweaty convention center. Women in skimpy outfits, paraded like pieces of meat. A gigantic, deafening, cacophonous <em>din</em>.<br /><br />Yep, the old-style E3 really was <em>glorious</em>. But in all seriousness, it seems as though most of the internet would kill for a return to the old format. Whether it's because of the muted reception to this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-the-nand-now/937630/"><em>horribly empty</em></a> E3 Media and Business Summit, or simply a hangover from Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/wii-warm-up-give-us-your-three-cents-about-e3/#comments">ill-received</a> press conference, the majority of fans want E3 to return to being the spectacle it once was. Significant industry figures <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/ubisoft-e3-timing-not-appropriate/">seem</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/riccitiello-i-hate-e3-like-this/">agree</a>.<br /><br />And now, it <em>might just happen</em>. Kotaku claims that the idea of returning to the E3 of yesteryear and opening the doors to the public has been officially proposed, and is currently being discussed by the ESA board, the folks who organize the event. Maybe the "old E3" won't just be a story we tell our grandchildren, decades from now.<br /><br />

The latest bandwagon that people seem to be hopping onto is the "Let's bash E3" express. We've had our own prognosticator <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/the-political-game-e3-is-dead/">proclaiming</a> that the video game expo is past its prime, and now Will Wright is joining in by delivering a couple of swift kicks to the ribs. Then he backed over it a few times with his car before driving to his giant Scrooge McDuck pool of money and diving in.<br /><br />In an <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/will-wright-e3-is-the-walking-dead">interview with GamesIndustry.biz</a>, he calls the ailing conference "the walking dead" and says that the recently slenderized version of E3 from last month was "such an abrupt end to what was E3..." At least he could have bought it flowers or something while he was busy pronouncing it to be a living corpse. The nerve of some people.<br /><br />We're just about to get some shuteye before launching into the crazy realm of PAX 2008, and we'll see if E3 does indeed look like a zombie in comparison. Maybe all it needs is a little makeup.<br /><br />[Thanks, Jonah]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/29/will-wright-calls-e3-a-walking-corpse/">Will Wright calls E3 a walking corpse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Aug 2008 06:00:00 EST. For Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive VP of sales and marketing, July's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/highlights-from-nintendos-e3-2008-press-conference/">E3 media briefing</a> was the perfect opportunity to cast a new spell. With most of Wii's casual ownership tuned out (c'mon, you think grandpop was glued to G4?), the press conference should have marked an effort to dazzle Nintendo's wavering "core." Allow the fans a whiff of another <span style="font-style: italic;">classic</span> sequel, and all would have been right in their hearts. Instead, well ... you know <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XR7LaJLLf8&amp;eurl=http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/cammie-nintendo-disappointed-with-e3-performance/">what happened</a>.<br /><br />"I would say the message is we were disappointed with our performance at E3. There were titles like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wario-land-shake-it"><em>Wario</em></a> which we think will be really fun titles that we should have showcased," Cammie recently admitted to <a href="http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=1706">VGChartz</a>, adding, "We were excited that Mr. Miyamoto made the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/miyamoto-were-making-pikmin/">commitment</a> that <em>Pikmin</em> is coming. It would have been nice if we could have said that on stage." Points for honesty?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/cammie-nintendo-disappointed-with-e3-performance/">Cammie: Nintendo 'disappointed' with E3 performance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Aug 2008 15:57:00 EST. During an interview with <a href="http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=1706">VGChartz</a>, Nintendo's resident wrist-hurting, Shaun White-introducing marketing lady, Cammie Dunaway, commented that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/e308-wii-fanboys-e3-endgame-evaluation/">Nintendo's E3 showing</a> was a bit of a disappointment. You don't say?<br /><br />"I would say the message is we were disappointed with our performance at E3," commented Dunaway. "There were titles like <em>Wario</em> which we think will be really fun titles that we should have show cased." Yes, we'd have to agree. It was certainly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-wii-fanboy-hands-on-with-wario-land-shake-it/">the best game we played</a> at the show. But what about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-a-new-pikmin-sprouts/">this <em>Pikmin 3</em> business</a>? <br /><br />"We were excited that Mr. Miyamoto made the commitment that <em>Pikmin</em> is coming," she said. "It would have been nice if we could have said that on stage. But, we think it was a good recognition for us that we care for our core fans, and not just the new people who are now discovering Nintendo."<br /><br />

We received a nice letter from Nintendo of America today, thanking us for our attendance at their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008">E3 2008</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/highlights-from-nintendos-e3-2008-press-conference/">media briefing</a> (we think the community has already <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XR7LaJLLf8">sent their messages</a> to NoA). At first, we were excited to have authentic signature from famous Nintendo executives Reggie Fils-Aime, Cammie Dunaway and Denise Kaigler (we like to collect them like pokemon). <br /><br />Our excitement then quickly turned to utter disappointment (some would call that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/06/readers-pick-best-webcomic-impressions-of-nintendos-e3-confere/">appropriate</a>). As it turns out, every attendee got the same letter, complete with the same signatures in the exact same spots. After we discovered the names were stamped on, their eBay value immediately dropped from US $0.01 to three pieces of hair and a first-print of <em>Daikatana</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/nintendo-sends-thank-you-note-for-e3-attendees/">Nintendo sends Thank-You note to E3 attendees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Aug 2008 00:47:00 EST. The boys over at GayGamer.net put together a video scrapbook of <em>serious</em> questions they asked members of the gaming press during E3. The series features folks from several of your favorite gaming blogs, sites and magazines. There's no embed code and we referenced a couple of these during the week, but here they all are in one neat, perfectly trimmed, little package with a link to each episode:<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gaygamer">GG</a> tells us they'll be doing another video scrapbook at PAX in a couple weeks and asking the same type of hard-hitting introspective questions of random attendees. <div align="left">This week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zero-punctuation">Zero Punctuation</a> makes us wonder: What E3 is Yahtzee talking about? Perhaps things seemed different from the outside, but this year's show actually saw a slew of original titles -- shockingly enough, many from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/joystiq-live-at-electronic-arts-e3-2008-press-conference/">the maw of EA</a>. Sure, there is some serious sequelitus going on (and certain outlets really need to stop riding <strike><em>RE4</em> v2</strike> <span style="font-style: italic;">RE5</span>'s rooster), but we were pleasantly surprised by some of the new IPs. Everyone has an opinion - especially when it comes to which games at this year's E3 were the very best. IGN voiced its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/28/ign-announces-e3-award-winners/">yesterday</a>; today we have the results of what we're sure was heated voting at <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3168984">1UP</a>, <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/37682.html">GameTrailers</a>, and G4's <a href="http://e3.g4tv.com/e32008/blog/post/687264/XPlays_Best_Of_E3_Awards_Tonight.html">X-Play</a>. Okay, we're not <em>totally</em> sure the voting was heated, but we can only imagine it was given the <strike>chairs thrown</strike><em> voices raised </em>around here over our nominees (you don't even <em>want</em> to know what went down during the selection of our <em>winners</em>). <br /><br />We've got the results after the break. It's <em>grown folks time</em>. <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36332.html">The <span style="font-style: italic;">Dead Space</span> "Lullaby" trailer</a> we've placed cautiously after the jump is full of ominous environments, severed limbs, and creepy children's songs -- the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/12/saw-director-takes-a-stab-at-dead-space-with-loved-ones-traile/">horror game trailer trifecta</a>. In fact, Ars Technica reports that shortly after viewing the trailer at <a href="http://e3-2008.joystiq.com/">E3</a>, they received an email from Electronic Arts <a href="http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/07/21/two-dead-space-trailers-one-the-esrb-doesnt-want-you-to-see">telling them that the ESRB refused to approve the trailer</a> for American audiences. We're not experts on the subject, but it might have something to do with all the <em>disappendaged torsos</em>. It was cleared for European regions, however, and of course, <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/36332.html">for the great nation of Internetania</a>. Backbone Entertainment's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/gdc08-monster-lab-its-a-lab-for-monsters/">Monster Lab</a>,</em> published by Eidos, seems better every time I see it. I don't think that this is a function of improvements being made to the game so much as it is a matter of me understanding it a little better and getting more into the gameplay. I hope this game doesn't end up as overlooked as I think it will!<br /><br />My demo at E3 took me through most of the steps to monster-fighting success: creating parts, building a creature, and fighting. Parts for the monster are made in minigames, and come in three categories of mad science: mechanical, alchemical, and biological. Mechanical parts range from gear-covered steampunk-looking stuff to futuristic robot parts; biological parts are your basic gross monster stuff, and alchemical parts are magic-themed. <br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/26/e308-monster-lab-blinded-me-with-science/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Monster Lab blinded me with science</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/26/e308-monster-lab-blinded-me-with-science/">E308: Monster Lab blinded me with science</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Jul 2008 12:00:00 EST. <em>Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility</em> is a big game. The first thing that I noticed was just how large the game world is. You aren't restricted to just one farm, instead able to spread many a seed across many a land. Aside from that, the game very much feels like all of the other <em>Harvest Moon</em> titles, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on whether you're a fan of the series or not.<br />

To be honest, the last time I played a <em>Harvest Moon </em>game, it was on the GameCube. We're talking <em>years ago</em>, folks. But, like riding a bike, <em>Harvest Moon</em> is an experience that doesn't change much over time. Fans like it that way, I imagine. And, just as I expected, <em>Island of Happiness</em> featured a lot of the same things previous titles in the franchise offered.<br />

No, not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/19/e308-wii-fanboys-e3-endgame-evaluation/">the company's showing at E3</a>, but rather the storage issues of the console.<br /><br />He said that "from an Americas-centric perspective," the Wii's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/storage">storage limitations</a> are becoming a "mainstream" problem. Again, he reiterates that the company is working on a solution, but isn't ready to reveal any specifics yet. <br /><br />Seriously, Nintendo, how long are you going to wait? Each week, more Virtual Console and WiiWare content releases and gamers can't download because they have no space!<br /><br />[Thanks, il_duce620!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/24/reggie-wii-shortage-is-a-mainstream-problem/">Reggie: Wii storage is a 'mainstream' problem</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Jul 2008 15:44:00 EST. When hitting up Natsume's meeting room at E3, I kept catching myself wishing I wasn't alone. In fact, I wished that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/candace-savino">one specific person</a> was with me, because all of these games that the company had on display were based on franchises I, frankly, didn't have the most experience with. That's not to say I went in biased, just that I prefer to be as well-informed as possible going in.<br /><br />Imagine my surprise when I played <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rune-factory-2"><em>Rune Factory 2</em></a> and it was like <em>Harvest Moon </em>had a baby with <em>Secret of Mana</em>.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/24/e308-ds-fanboy-explores-the-lands-of-rune-factory-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: DS Fanboy explores the lands of Rune Factory 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/24/e308-ds-fanboy-explores-the-lands-of-rune-factory-2/">E308: DS Fanboy explores the lands of Rune Factory 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Jul 2008 15:30:00 EST. Majesco had a solid line-up of games at E3. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/e308-wii-fanboy-flips-burgers-in-cooking-mama-world-kitchen/"><em>Cooking Mama: World Kitchen</em></a> looks promising and, until I got my hands on it, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-wii-fanboy-leads-the-band-in-major-minors-majestic-march/"><em>Major Minor's Majestic March</em></a> also looked very good. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/e308-dog-suited-hands-on-with-wii-music/"><em>Wii Music</em></a> was the big news at E3 in terms of Wii games about pretending you were playing a fake instrument (in contrast to games like <em>Guitar Hero</em>, in which you <em>actually</em> play a fake instrument). But it wasn't the only game in town: Disney's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/ultimate-band-uses-ultimate-pantomime/"><em>Ultimate Band</em></a> also features the Wiimote and Nunchuk subbing in for guitar, bass, and drums. Except, instead of MIDI versions of your public domain favorites, <em>Ultimate Band</em> has you playing along to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/ultimate-band-is-less-disney-more-disnasty/">abhorrent covers</a> of recent pop/rock hits. Also, unlike <em>Wii Music'</em>s freeform nature, <em>Ultimate Band</em> is a game with, like, goals and points and stuff.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/e308-the-other-musical-pantomime-game/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: The other musical pantomime game</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/e308-the-other-musical-pantomime-game/">E308: The other musical pantomime game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. <em>Fable</em> frontman Peter Molyneux has raised his metaphorical fist of solidarity, showing support for fellow game designer and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/too-human"><em>Too Human</em></a> trumpeter Denis Dyack. "I feel sorry for Denis Dyack because you know, I think a few things were said wrong, there was that really unfortunate showing at E3 a few years ago," Molyneux told <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/23-07-2008-8890.html">VideoGamer.com</a> at E3 last week. "Everyone got on the bandwagon of saying things about <em>Too Human</em>. Now I've played it and, you know, it's a good game. It doesn't deserve a lot of that harsh criticism. But as soon as something starts it's very hard to turn the tide and pull it back again." Molyneux, of course, speaks from experience, having survived a similar "avalanche" of negative criticism after the first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fable"><em>Fable</em></a> game was released in 2004 and failed to meet expectations hyped by Molyneux himself.<br /> <br />While Molyneux doesn't offer any sage advice for braving the inevitable storm to come (you don't actually have "something" in your back pocket, do you Mr. Dyack?), might we suggest, sir, that you quietly step away from the computer and out into the open air. Take a deep breath. You'll be safe there. Remember, it's not the <em>whole</em> world that's judging you (just a teeny, tiny nugget of web real estate). And besides, just like your pal Peter, you've always got <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/too-human-trilogy-may-conclude-on-next-next-gen-console/">the sequel</a> to make good on empty promises.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/molyneux-i-feel-sorry-for-denis-dyack/">Molyneux: 'I feel sorry for Denis Dyack'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 19:00:00 EST. It's been a very long time since I played <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/populous"><em>Populous</em></a>. In fact, the only version I ever got to play was the SNES port (the game first released on the PC, Atari ST-1 and Amiga) back in the day. But, I did play that port quite a bit in my youth, so seeing the game hit the DS is very exciting to me. <em>Populous DS</em> very much feels like the game of old, but in truth is nothing like the SNES title in both presentation and gameplay.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/e308-ds-fanboy-plays-god-with-populous-ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: DS Fanboy plays God with Populous DS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/e308-ds-fanboy-plays-god-with-populous-ds/">E308: DS Fanboy plays God with Populous DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 18:00:00 EST. Aside from knowing the game exists, I didn't have anything else to go on when I came across <em>Guinness World Records: The Videogame </em>at my closed-door session in the back of the Warner Bros. meeting room at E3. When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/a-pint-of-guinness-world-records-information/">the game was revealed</a>, I figured it would just be another cookie-cutter mini-game compilation that didn't hold much value. Actually, I was wrong, as <em>Guiness World Records</em> is a pretty fun title.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/e308-wii-fanboy-sets-records-in-guinness-world-records-the-vid/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Wii Fanboy sets records in Guinness World Records: The Videogame</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/e308-wii-fanboy-sets-records-in-guinness-world-records-the-vid/">E308: Wii Fanboy sets records in Guinness World Records: The Videogame</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 14:45:00 EST. After being privy to everything we heard, saw and played at E3 2008 we'd like to hear what you thought of Microsoft's overall performance. With suitable OMG-megatons like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Final-Fantasy-XIII/">Final Fantasy XIII</a></em>, awesome exclusivity announcements like DLC in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Fallout-3/">Fallout 3</a></em> and rad showings of games like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Gears-of-War-2/">Gears of War 2</a></em> -- it seems like it was a great show! But ... noticeable absences like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Alan-Wake/">Alan Wake</a></em>, the controversy surrounding the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/microsoft-bungie-announcement-held-back-for-special-event/">Bungie announcement</a> and debatable decisions like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/new-xbox-experience">dashboard revamp</a> this poll could go either way. So, X3F Army we ask you. How did Microsoft do overall?<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/fanpoll-how-was-microsofts-e308-showing/#poll17216">View Poll</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/fanpoll-how-was-microsofts-e308-showing/">Fanpoll: How was Microsoft's E308 showing?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. Our operative (me) couldn't even get through the Plug Man level featured in the E3 <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-mega-man-9-feels-more-like-a-10/">Mega Man 9</a> </em>demo. The heroes at Gamersyde, however, succeeded in that task, and <em>recorded</em> the event as well. That means a <em>whole level</em> of <em>Mega Man 9</em> for your viewing pleasure, in only slightly shaky cam-vision. Or at least as much of a level as was available: the bosses were <a href="http://www.toastyfrog.com/verbalspew/archives/entry_718.php">not present</a> in the demo, with only a "Coming Soon" window in their place.<br /><br />We can't embed the video, but we think seeing <em>Mega Man 9</em> in action is worth having to click on a <a href="http://gamersyde.com/stream_8103_en.html">link</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/e308-mega-man-9-video-lets-you-start-memorizing-a-level-now/">E308: Mega Man 9 video lets you start memorizing a level now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 12:30:00 EST. In keeping with the retro-y spirit of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mega-man-9"><em>Mega Man 9</em></a>, Capcom decided to commission <a href="http://www.iam8bit.net/">I Am 8-bit</a> artist <a href="http://www.geralddejesus.com/home.html">Gerald de Jesus</a> to create the most awful faux box art possible for the game. Capcom then put it on T-shirts for its staff to wear at E3. The idea was to mimic the <a href="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ea/MegamanBox.jpg">atrocious cover</a> of the original <em>Mega Man</em> for NES (widely considered to be the worst box art of all time) and it worked. <em>Really</em> well.<br /> <br /> Capcom's head PR honcho, Chris Kramer, has <a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/kramez/blog/2008/07/22/mega_man_9_">updated the company's blog</a> with word that the exceedingly kitsch shirts will actually be re-printed for sale to the masses, although exactly when and where we can expect to snap one up is still being ironed <strike>on</strike> out.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/capcom-to-sell-intentionally-awful-mega-man-9-shirts/">Capcom to sell intentionally awful Mega Man 9 shirts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 01:00:00 EST. While cruising around Konami's booth at E3, I saw <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lost-in-blue-shipwrecked/">Lost in Blue: Shipwrecked</a> </em>and, honestly, wasn't too excited to play it. Once the demo person showed me exactly what was up with the demo (a variety of minigames and the main Survivor mode), the title grew on me a tad, but, overall, failed to leave me with the impression that it could provide a lengthy, worthwhile experience.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-wii-fanboy-survives-lost-in-blue-shipwrecked/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: Wii Fanboy survives Lost in Blue: Shipwrecked</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-wii-fanboy-survives-lost-in-blue-shipwrecked/">E308: Wii Fanboy survives Lost in Blue: Shipwrecked</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 20:00:00 EST. I had never played the original <em>Pok&eacute;mon Ranger</em>, mostly because I'm extremely wary of <em>Pok&eacute;mon</em> spinoffs. But I read enough to know that, for better or worse, the sequel, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-pokemon-rangers-2-gets-localized-offers-footage/"><em>Shadows of Almia</em></a>, is more of the same, with slight tweaks.<br />
<br />
Before I talk about the game, I'd like to offer my impressions-within-impressions of the title: I'm disappointed that NOA decided to use such a generic fantasy-game subtitle over the jaunty "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/25/pokemon-ranger-batonnage-bidoofs-aplenty/">Batonnage</a>," though I understand the reasoning (the reasoning being <em>what the hell is "batonnage"</em>). It's not as if anyone was ever going to call this anything but <em>Pok&eacute;mon Ranger 2</em> anyway.<br />

Survival plus horror. It's a pretty self-explanatory genre, albeit one that frequently produces thematically lopsided games that would rather have you yell "Eww!" than "Aiieee!" Running around with 43 different kinds of machine guns, a rocket launcher and an abundance of ammo is tremendous, limb-splattering fun (see: <span style="font-style: italic;">Resident Evil 4</span>), but it's not scary. <br /><br />When we say <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dead-space"><span style="font-style: italic;">Dead Space</span></a> is scary, don't take it to mean that EA Redwood Shores' ambitious, zero-g frightener shoves a stick in your hand and pushes you out an airlock. On the contrary, you're armed to the teeth and quite capable of defending yourself from everything <em>with</em> teeth thanks to an array of upgradeable weapons, including a shotgun, flamethrower and charge-up-in-the-nick-of-time beam rifle. Shooting isn't the problem -- it's knowing where to shoot. The face is usually a good place to start, though!<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dead-space/">Dead Space</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dead-space/#1067634"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/scorpion_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dead-space/#1067408"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/deadspacesuits2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dead-space/#939762"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dead-space-0722-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dead-space/#939761"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dead-space-0722-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/dead-space/#939759"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dead-space-0722-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/joystiq-e3-hands-on-dead-space/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq E3 hands-on: Dead Space</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/joystiq-e3-hands-on-dead-space/">Joystiq E3 hands-on: Dead Space</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 17:00:00 EST. <br />Geoff Keighley, you have bigger stones than us. The GameTrailers TV presenter grabbed super-sized Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aime immediately after he left stage at Nintendo's infamous E3 2008 keynote, and subsequently gave him a grilling that <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD5tunBGmDQ">Paxman</a> would be proud of.<br /><br />While Reggie was mostly gracious about Keighley's constant enquiries into the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/e308-iwata-mario-and-zelda-teams-hard-at-work/">new <em>Mario</em> and <em>Zelda</em> titles</a>, he did show the odd sign of irritation, at one point protesting, "Geoff, you keep trying to date me, you know. My girlfriend's going to get upset. You keep trying to date me. You can't do that." Protip, Geoff: when the vein starts bulging in the side of Reggie's head, <em>that's the time to stop asking about Mario and Zelda</em>.<br /><br />In a totally different interview, Reggie's conference co-presenter Cammie "Smiler" Dunaway has defended herself from (rather absurd, if you ask us) accusations that she was feigning enthusiasm during Nintendo's keynote. "Tell your blog that I'm really a genuinely smiley, nice person," she instructed Wired's Chris Kohler. "Because people think I'm fake, smiling up there. I'm just not! It's just me! I am who I am."<br /><br />Ah, the hard-hitting drama of the post-E3 analysis!<br /><br />[Reggie carefully concealing his annoyance <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/37265.html">here</a>, via <a href="http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/07/22/keighley-hammers-reggie-on-lack-of-e3-nintendo-hardcore/">videogaming247</a>]<br />[Cammie Dunaway defending her right to smile <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/07/nintendos-cammi.html">here</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/keighley-walks-a-fine-line-with-reggie-dunaway-defends-herself/">Keighley walks a fine line with Reggie, Dunaway defends herself</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 14:00:00 EST. <br />Ever since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/15/parappa-creator-to-rock-the-wii/">it's been rumored</a>, the whole team has been patiently awaiting <em>PaRappa </em>creator Masaya Matsuura's next project. Once <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/31/parappa-creators-major-minors-majestic-march-revealed/">it was revealed</a>, I found myself puzzled as to what to expect. Would it be as good as <em>PaRappa</em>? Has Matsuura lost it? Well, that confusion is gone now that I've had time to play the game at E3. <br /><br />Is it good? Oh, poor Konami. You're a little too late to your own party. Actually, more like <em>way too late</em>. With the company finally trying to grab a slice of the delicious music game pie, they're not only pushing <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/15/rock-revolution-bringing-the-whole-band-to-ds/">Rock Revolution</a> </em>on home consoles, but also on the DS. <br /><br />After having some play time with the title at E3, I feel safe in saying that the handheld game is pretty much going to be the best of the bunch.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-ds-fanboy-rocks-out-to-rock-revolution-ds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: DS Fanboy rocks out to Rock Revolution DS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-ds-fanboy-rocks-out-to-rock-revolution-ds/">E308: DS Fanboy rocks out to Rock Revolution DS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 11:00:00 EST. I was always a big fan of the first <em>Age of Empires</em> game on the DS (remember when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/ds-fanboy-favorites-daves-top-five/">we did these</a>?). When <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/03/thq-reveals-age-of-empires-sequel/">a sequel was revealed</a>, I nearly wet myself with excitement (luckily, nobody can confirm or deny the wetting). Then, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e308">E3</a> hit and my cohort in crime, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/jc-fletcher">JC</a>, informed me the game was available for play at THQ's booth.<br /><br />I immediately called "dibs."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-ds-fanboy-summons-gods-in-age-of-mythologies/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>E308: DS Fanboy summons Gods in Age of Mythologies</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/e308-ds-fanboy-summons-gods-in-age-of-mythologies/">E308: DS Fanboy summons Gods in Age of Mythologies</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 09:30:00 EST.
