One of the things we made sure to do at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008/">E3</a> this year was to spend a significant amount of time with the IndieCade folks. Then we sat on that info long enough for some of these games to get picked up, have a successful release, come out with sequels, spawn movies, novels, comic books, become part of the general pop culture bloodstream, and then fade into nostalgia, and for that we apologize. Actually, I'll apologize, I did it.<br /><br />But in all seriousness, a lot of the more fun and innovative stuff we saw at E3 wasn't actually being churned out by big studios and publishers, but being worked on by small groups with tiny budgets and just a love of gaming. Read on to find out all about the IndieCade games that we saw on display, and why you'll want to be playing them now.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-indiecade-2008/">E3: IndieCade 2008</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-indiecade-2008/#934997"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dsc_0466_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-indiecade-2008/#934996"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dsc_0469_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-indiecade-2008/#934995"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dsc_0463_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-indiecade-2008/#934994"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dsc_0461_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-indiecade-2008/#934993"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/dsc_0449_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/joystiq-hands-on-indiecade-games-galore/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq hands-on: IndieCade games galore</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/13/joystiq-hands-on-indiecade-games-galore/">Joystiq hands-on: IndieCade games galore</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Aug 2008 08:00:00 EST. Not everyone stumbled away from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/engadget-and-joystiq-live-from-nintendos-e3-2008-keynote/">Nintendo's E3 presser</a> feeling lightheaded and sick to their stomach. Some, like Wedbush Morgan soothsayer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pachter/">Michael Pachter</a>, felt that the presentation was on point, offering an "even more positive view" of the company, while adding belief that Nintendo has not yet turned its back on the '<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/nintendo-hardcore-gamers-critically-important-to-us/">critically important</a>' hardcore crowd.<br /><br />"We think that Nintendo focused upon building upon its formidable lead with the mass market," notes Pachter, "and do not consider the lack of major hard core game announcements to be an abandonment of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/joystiq-interview-nintendo-spins-core-gamer-appeal/">its core</a>." Granted, this is a man who has the ear of investors and not necessarily gamers, and given that the analyst anticipates Nintendo to report revenue of more than $3.9 billion for 2009's fiscal first quarter, with an estimated $17.7 billion expected for the year, try to at least look surprised when his world views don't align perfectly with your own.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/29/pachter-nintendo-has-not-abandoned-the-core-audience/">Pachter: Nintendo has not abandoned the core audience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 09:15:00 EST. His face <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/20/facebreaker-to-allow-breaking-of-peter-moores-face/">may be broken</a>, but EA's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/peter-moore">Peter Moore</a> likes to speak his mind, and what's on his mind lately is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008">last week's E3</a>, a gathering that he thinks can be fixed by opening it up to the public. Whoa, maybe <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/12/peter-moore-to-get-more-ink-if-ea-sports-misses-mark/">all of that ink</a> has gone to his brain, or has he already forgotten the madhouse that the annual used to be, when everyone and their brother seemed to find a way to roam the show's halls? Plus, isn't that what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e-for-all">E for All</a> is for, anyway?<br /><br />Calling the event "soulless and lacking an epicenter," the former Microsoft exec suggests that organizers "invite the community" to the show, adding that given enough planning, letting gamers experience E3 first hand will help companies create better games and forge new ideas. Of course, it would likely be too crowded for any of the attending press to get any work done, but that's beside the point. Right, Pete?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/26/peter-moore-calls-e3-soulless-calls-for-public-event/">Peter Moore calls E3 'soulless,' calls for public event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Jul 2008 01:00:00 EST. E3's oddly intoxicating cocktail of libation and lack of sleep can often give those in attendance a unique perspective on the industry. However, as we wandered into Nintendo's coolly lit corner of the LA convention center, we were quickly reminded that this is an outfit with a perspective all of its own. <br /><br />If the company's ambivalence during its own pre-E3 presser wasn't enough to convince us of Nintendo's indifference toward core gamers, our sit down during the show with Nintendo spokesman Charlie Scibetta proved that while the organization may preach that "hardcore" gamers play a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/nintendo-hardcore-gamers-critically-important-to-us/">critical role</a> in Nintendo's strategy, its actions paint a different picture altogether.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/joystiq-interview-nintendo-spins-core-gamer-appeal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq interview: Nintendo spins 'core' gamer appeal, more</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/joystiq-interview-nintendo-spins-core-gamer-appeal/">Joystiq interview: Nintendo spins 'core' gamer appeal, more</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 08:30:00 EST. You make your way down the hallway in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_17">City 17</a>, and push open the door into the bright sunlight reflected off of concrete. A Combine soldier stands before you, so you life your semiautomatic weapon, and as you pull the trigger and fire, the gun recoils in your hand. Another Combine stands across the viaduct, and when he fires at you, you feel the bullet strike you from the left, so you turn, and feel the gun jump in your hand again as you take him out.<br /><br />That's the ideal experience <a href="http://home.novint.com/">with Novint's Falcon controller</a>. The controller itself is about an eight inch orb that sits on your table, with a three-inch sphere sitting on the end of three arms coming off of it -- like a Soviet satellite sticking out of the globe. The idea is that you push the little sphere around to move your cursor, and the three arms provide resistance against whatever you bump up against. We got to use the controller at E3, and the verdict is that while it does provide a nice experience, the costs might be a little overwhelming for most players. After returning to its old stomping grounds, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2008">last week's E3</a> was a bittersweet reminder of not only what the annual event <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/e3-the-nand-now/">used to be</a>, but also <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/welcome-to-e3-2008-now-with-less-magic/">what it had become</a>, its once bustling halls now comparatively vacant as handfuls of press scurried past. Even so, while some continue to call the occurrence <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/dnf-dev-calls-e3-irrelevant-kettle-black/">irrelevant</a>, others, such as Bethesda marketing front man Pete Hines, believe that E3 remains an important event for the gaming industry.<br /><br />"I'm a firm believer that we need an E3," Hines told TechRadar UK in a post-show interview. However, the exec qualified his statement, adding that "we just can't have it like this year." Hines instead feels that E3 needs to become an "improved version" of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e32007">2007's Santa Monica beach side trek</a>, or even a more controlled version of previous years' media bazaar. It will be interesting to see where E3 goes from here; with the event being a few pounds short of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/15/megaton-the-story-behind-the-meme/">megaton</a>, we couldn't shake the feeling that we were attending both a showcase <em>and </em>a wake.<br /><br />[Thanks Adam]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/bethesda-defends-e3-says-it-needs-to-change/">Bethesda defends E3, says it needs to change</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 11:58:00 EST. <em>Sonic</em> has had a hard time since he discovered the third dimension. Not only is he now chubbier, but his adventures in 3D-land have been met with lukewarm reception. The general consensus is that the last great <em>Sonic</em> game was on the Sega Genesis. With <em>Sonic Unleashed</em> Sega are hoping to reinvigorate the franchise with a focus on speed and platforming, as well as evolving the character (literally) into something unique.<br /><br />The first thing you notice about <em>Unleashed</em> is that it's very pretty. Even with rough shadows and unfinished lighting physics, the game looks gorgeous. It looks like it might also play quite nicely, depending on controls. There are two different styles of gameplay in <em>Unleashed</em> which, together, could satisfy most <em>Sonic</em> fans. <br /><br />For a lot of people the name <em>Sonic</em> is synonymous with "speed," and the day-time missions in <em>Unleashed </em>reflect this. The first level seemed simple enough -- hold the analog stick in the right direction and watch Sonic go, making sure to jump in time. Obviously, this won't be true throughout the game, later levels will feature more precise platforming sections and less non-stop running. There are also different routes to take throughout the levels, which require a specific button combination press in order to reach.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-unleashed-2/">Sonic Unleashed</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-unleashed-2/#936424"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/sonicunleashede3screen11024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-unleashed-2/#936425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/sonicunleashede3screen61024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-unleashed-2/#936426"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/sonicunleashede3screen71024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-unleashed-2/#936427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/sonicunleashede3screen21024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sonic-unleashed-2/#936428"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/sonicunleashede3screen41024_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/joystiq-eyes-on-sonic-unleashed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq E3 eyes-on: Sonic Unleashed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/joystiq-eyes-on-sonic-unleashed/">Joystiq E3 eyes-on: Sonic Unleashed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Jul 2008 17:20:00 EST. Volition's decision to change the perspective in <em>Red Faction: Guerrilla</em> from the first to the third-person couldn't have been an easy choice to make, but it seems to be the right one, something that even now feels strange to put to words. Even as a fan of the developer's terrain-deforming original, it's difficult to look back on <em>Red Faction</em> without qualifying my enthusiasm with the promises and potential of what might have been. <br /> <br /> However, after sitting down with Volition senior artist Jasen Whiteside over a hurried E3 lunch and actually playing the title, it's evident that action game fans shouldn't feel at all awkward about adding <em>Red Faction: Guerrilla</em> to their list of titles to look forward to in early 2009.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/">Red Faction: Guerrilla</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935192"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935191"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_07_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935190"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935189"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/red-faction-guerrilla/#935188"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/07/rfg_e3_14_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/joystiq-e3-hands-on-red-faction-guerrilla/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq E3 hands-on: Red Faction: Guerrilla</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/joystiq-e3-hands-on-red-faction-guerrilla/">Joystiq E3 hands-on: Red Faction: Guerrilla</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Jul 2008 09:30:00 EST. Sega's E3 presence was among the weakest at last week's event, trumped only by the pitiful showing at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/konami">Camp Belmont</a>, a notion not helped by the absence of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gearbox/">Gearbox</a>-developed <em>Aliens: Colonial Marines</em> from either the show floor or Sega's own booth. <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/18-07-2008-8864.html">Videogamer.com</a> cornered Gearbox president Randy Pitchford about the missing shooter, a no-show he blamed squarely on Sega's marketing strategy, adding that "the game is in great shape. People are going to freak out when they see it."<br /><br />By people, he obviously didn't mean Sega's own marketing VP Sean Ratcliffe, who told us that while the publisher was considering showing the game at E3, Sega didn't feel that it was quite ready for prime time. "I think it needs a little more time before we want to put it in front of the press," the exec told us. He added that more news regarding the status of <em>Aliens: Colonial Marines</em> will be announced sometime after E3, though we continue to hope that Sega will release game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/aliens-colonial-marines-in-late-2008-4-player-co-op/">as planned in late 2008</a> and not nuke the site from orbit.<br /><br />[Thanks Cellien]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/20/aliens-colonial-marines-e3-absence-explained/">Aliens: Colonial Marines E3 absence explained</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 20 Jul 2008 12:30:00 EST. While not every game may include Trophies for now, at least one major developer tells Joystiq that Sony's answer to Achievements will be "mandated" by Sony for every new PS3 release in 2009.<br /><br />This isn't entirely unexpected given <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/03/ps3-trophies-not-guaranteed-for-every-game/">recently-revised comments</a> by PSN director of operations, Eric Lampel. What's more interesting, however, is that the developer, which is currently working on an early 2009 release, is also hearing that Sony may be enforcing some measure of uniqueness between spoils earned on its console versus the Xbox 360. Commented to developer, "We've heard some things that make it sound like we will have to do some unique to PS3 Trophies...this is all very new to us." While unconfirmed, we can't wait to see to what extent Sony will try to separate its virtual accolades from those on the Xbox 360, or if the idea will simply be enough to make completionists' heads implode.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/rumor-sony-mandating-some-unique-trophies-in-2009/">Rumor: Sony 'mandating' some unique Trophies in 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 23:00:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/appstore.html">the App Store open for business</a>, games are finally headed to Apple's iPhone, and the unit's multitouch interface, accelerometer, and built-in mic and speaker make it perfect for gaming. <a href="http://us.thqwireless.com/">THQ Wireless</a> is one of the many companies getting ready to try and cash in on the first generation of the App Store -- after making games for a lot of other mobile devices, Director of Global Production Brad Pitser is excited about finally releasing software for the iPhone.<br />
<br />
Joystiq got to play two different games in THQ's demo at E3. <span style="font-style: italic;">De Blob</span> is a handheld adaptation of the Wii game, and uses the accelerometer in the iPhone and iPod touch to do a little light platform puzzling. And <span style="font-style: italic;">Force Unleashed</span> attempts to recreate <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/15/joystiq-hands-on-star-wars-the-force-unleashed-duel-mode-wii/">the upcoming Star Wars action title</a>, by using a touchscreen gesture system to try and make you feel like a Jedi. impressions of both are after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/joystiq-e3-hands-on-de-blob-and-force-unleashed-for-iphone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq E3 hands-on: De Blob and Force Unleashed for iPhone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/17/joystiq-e3-hands-on-de-blob-and-force-unleashed-for-iphone/">Joystiq E3 hands-on: De Blob and Force Unleashed for iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 22:00:00 EST. Even cynics like us have to admit at least a passing curiosity with the nerd orgasm that is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mortal-kombat-vs-dc-universe/"><em>Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe</em></a> and its cross-universe roster. Earlier today we approached the game's production coordinator, Hector Sanchez, and while he would not let us in on the game's complete lineup, he admitted that the team is looking to feature between 20 to 25 characters, "split up evenly half and half, and then split up again between heroes and villains."<br /><br />Additionally, while talking about possible alternate costumes or other unlockables, Sanchez told us that the team is "planning to support downloadable content," before stopping short and saying he "was going to say something" but couldn't. Downloadable characters seems the obvious source of his pursed lips, making us continue wondering what comic book icons will be further ground beneath the heel of Midway's floundering franchise.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/mk-vs-dc-to-have-20-characters-download-support/">MK vs. DC to have 20+ characters, download support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 22:30:00 EST. Planning ahead, you're doing it wrong. That appears to be the mantra for Sega, at least when it comes to the ever-elusive topic of Wii storage. Strange, given that it's also a topic upon which the company is blazing a trail, announcing yesterday plans to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/sega-confirms-samba-de-amigo-getting-dlc/">release downloadable songs</a> for the upcoming Wii-exclusive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samba-de-amigo/"><em>Samba de Amigo</em></a>. In the same interview that gave us <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/sega-explains-golden-axe-co-op-absence/">this insightful nugget</a>, we also asked Sega marketing VP Sean Ratcliffe how the company plans to cope with the console's internal shortcomings, to which he had little response.<br /><br />"This is an innovation for us, so we're going to test the waters and see how well this goes," he explained. "It's clearly something we'll need to address in the future, but for right now I don't think it's going to be a problem in terms of storage for us...we're going to have to cross that bridge when we come to it." Just forgive us if we don't follow you across that expanse -- that bridge is likely to fall out from under you.<br /><br />For more on Sega's strategies, or lack thereof, look for the full interview soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/sega-unconcerned-about-wii-storage-falling/">Sega unconcerned about Wii storage, falling</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 16:15:00 EST. You may think that strategy games are the domain of the keyboard and mouse, but don't tell that to the guys at Creative Assembly. During E3, company reps walked us through several minutes of their upcoming console-focused RTS, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/11/sega-announces-console-specific-rts-in-stormrise/"><em>Stormrise</em></a>, but not before while lamenting the reason for the studio's move beyond the PC -- a market project director Ken Turner calls a "good, strong niche."<br /><br />Awwe, thanks man, that's so sweet of you to...hey wait a sec! <em>Why you! </em>"We're hoping that there will be other people out there who'll appreciate what we can do," explained Turner, who calls the now three-and-a-half year old effort a "breaking away" project for the company. He further noted that Creative Assembly "targeted the console directly," and "distilled it down to an interface where 90% of what you do is with two thumbsticks and one button." After watching <em>Stormrise </em>being played his words certainly ring true, though admittedly it's hard to hear his point beneath the claxon of so many PC gamers' disdain.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/stormrise-devs-call-pc-market-a-strong-niche/">Stormrise devs call PC market a 'strong niche'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 13:00:00 EST. As totally rad as arcade classic <em>Golden Axe </em>might have been in 1989, developer Secret Level's decision to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/16/golden-axe-beast-rider-impressions/">axe co-op</a> from the game's upcoming sequel is akin to castrating the series of the <em>one thing</em> that made it worth playing at all. Since hearing of the studio's misguided design choice, we've been pining for the opportunity to ask anyone who'd listen for an explanation, a chance we got this week at E3 when we cornered Sega's VP of marketing, Sean Ratcliffe.<br /><br />"Rightly or wrongly, we don't have co-op multiplayer in the game," he offered, a statement that was met with a short, yet uncomfortable pause. "I think as much as anything it's taking inspiration from the original series but in terms of that multiplayer co-op the developer decided that they didn't want to take the game in that direction."<br /><br />"If <em>Golden Axe: Beast Rider</em> is successful," he added, "we can then come back with something else that maybe will have the co-op mode that everyone is wishing this game has." Or, you know, you could give people what they want in the first place instead. Just a thought.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/sega-explains-golden-axe-co-op-absence/">Sega explains Golden Axe co-op absence</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 12:00:00 EST. According to an article over at Gamepro, core gamers shouldn't fret going into E3 this year. Even though Nintendo just unleashed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> on us, the focus for their newest console isn't going to be <em>entirely</em> casual. "We recently announced the upcoming release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/10/guess-whos-in-mario-super-sluggers/"><em>Mario Super Sluggers</em></a>," said Marc Franklin, director of public relations at Nintendo, to Gamepro. "Additionally, we will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3."<br /><br />This is likely to be music to the ears of fanboys who've wondered where stellar-looking titles such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/day-of-crisis-not-a-disaster/"><em>Disaster: Day of Crisis</em></a> have been for their beloved console. But, this goes against what Reggie said, in a good way. Where the resident ass-kicker, name-taker said we should expect <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/17/reggie-big-wii-title-coming-this-holiday-revealed-during-e3/">one big title from Nintendo at E3</a>, we're liking the idea of "several new titles" that Franklin said. Let's hope we get a bunch of new games next month when the show goes down!<br /><br />[Thanks, Sonic_13!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/17/nintendo-says-core-gamers-will-get-new-titles-at-e3/">Nintendo says core gamers will get new titles at E3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jun 2008 13:15:00 EST. The news, which was sent our way by Gamecock this weekend, included notice that the former GodGames co-founder plans to run on a platform of "bringing the fun back to the gaming industry."<br /><br />While details remain light, the exec expects to announce more of his plans in the weeks leading up E3 (an event we all donned black to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/17/gamecocks-e3-funeral-mourns-an-old-friend/">help Gamecock bury</a> last year). The re-imagined conference will take place the week of July 15, during which both Wilson and Gamecock proper will run a campaign headquarters at L.A.'s Hotel Figueroa. <br /><br />According to Gamecock, the location will be open to anyone and everyone in the public to drop in and play games -- no invitation necessary. We're on the fence as to if we're supposed to take this announcement seriously, or if this is just another <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/11/gamecock-sorry-about-crashing-ken-levines-vga-speech/">grab</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/romero-gamecock-is-dumb-gamecock-no-u-r-us-whos-bitch-are/">for</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/21/gdc08-hail-to-these-things/">attention</a> by the indie publisher, though either way Gamecock's track record promises that the end result <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/07/eieio-2008-one-day-of-concentrated-gamecock-weirdness/">will be strange</a>.<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/11/gamecocks-wilson-announces-candidacy-for-esa-president/">Gamecock's Wilson announces candidacy for ESA president</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 11 May 2008 16:00:00 EST. Following up on a rumor posted on <a href="http://kotaku.com/5007627/activision-and-vivendi-break-from-esa">Kotaku</a>, we've just learned that Activision and Vivendi Games has discontinued its membership with the Entertainment Software Association. This information comes in the wake of yesterday's announcement that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/01/activision-not-attending-e3-2008/">Activision and Vivendi would not attend E3 this year</a>. <br /><br />The ESA's Rich Taylor, senior VP of communications and research (full quote after the break) says, "We can confirm that Activision and Vivendi Games opted to discontinue their membership. The ESA remains dedicated to advancing our industry¿s objectives such as protecting intellectual property, preserving First Amendment rights, and fostering a beneficial environment for the entire industry."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/breaking-activision-and-vivendi-discontinue-esa-membership/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Breaking: Activision and Vivendi discontinue ESA membership</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/02/breaking-activision-and-vivendi-discontinue-esa-membership/">Breaking: Activision and Vivendi discontinue ESA membership</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 May 2008 11:12:00 EST. Activision told <a href="http://www.gamingnexus.com/FullNews/Activision-officially-out-of-E3/Item8508.aspx">GamingNexus</a>, and we've since confirmed, that the company will not be attending E3 this year. A representative for the company tells us that, after careful consideration, it will not participate in any official E3 activities this year.<br /><br />The key word there is "official," which sounds to us like Activision will have a presence <em>around</em> the show, akin to Gamecock's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/eieio">EIEIO</a> event last year. Though it's not ready to share exactly what the plans are, we'll certainly have more on this at a later date. Other notable companies missing from the current E3 list are: Blizzard/Sierra (which goes hand in hand with Activision now), Atlus, Majesco and NCsoft. <br /><br />... oh, and if you're wondering what the picture above of Jamie Kennedy is all about, you missed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/watch-activision-alienate-E3-audience-with-jamie-kennedy/">one of the great disasters of E3 '07</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/01/activision-not-attending-e3-2008/">Activision not attending E3 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 May 2008 19:00:00 EST.
