The company plans on taking a full year off to work on the next game in the series.

"But making great games is not easy, and we're just not there yet on NBA LIVE 13. Having continued to look at the game over the past few days, it's clear that we won't be ready in October," EA Sports Executive Vice President Andrew Wilson wrote in a news release today. "And rather than launch midway through the season, we're going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year's game great."

The news comes after an announcement on the game's delay and its absence from EA Sports' E3 showing. More notably, the cancellation of NBA Elite 11 makes this the third year in a row that EA's simulation basketball series has failed to see publication.

"We're committed to delivering new innovation in online, and our progress in the visual presentation of the game continues to take big strides. We also know that a great game starts with great gameplay, and this remains a huge priority for us," Wilson wrote.
NBA Live 13 canceled by EA originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Sep 2012 16:03:00 EST. Don't be surprised if this Sunday's edition of ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown looks a bit more like a game of Madden. According to a New York Times report, the Disney-owned sports network will use the "EA Sports Virtual Playbook" and a special studio and camera setup to allow "both real and virtual people move around the ESPN set to demonstrate plays and possible situations." It sure sounds a lot simpler than getting real NFL players to crash around the set, but we'll reserve judgment until we see it in action this weekend.
New tech puts ESPN anchors on video game gridiron originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Sep 2008 16:50:00 EST. PC sports gamers are somewhat justifiably unhappy with Peter Moore right now. Earlier this year, the EA Sports executive announced that Madden and many other EA Sports games won't be coming to the PC market this year. But wait, you didn't give him a chance to explain! Well, actually, you did, and he did, but today Moore went into more detail about his division's scaled back PC support. A summary of the reasoning behind the decision:

PC sports gamers are gravitating to consoles.

The PC sports gaming market is gravitating to a downloadable model rather than a "packaged" model.

The PC versions of EA Sports games aren't getting a good enough return on investment.

You PC gamers just pirate everything anyway and we're not going to make a PC version just so millions of you can just steal it! (We may have exaggerated the tone a little bit on this one, but you get the idea).

PC Sports fans can still hold out hope that EA Sports will change its mind, though. Moore hinted that the company might be coming back into the PC space next year with "new, innovative, maybe even less-expensive ways to play all of our franchises on the PC." If there's one thing sports fans should be familiar with, it's squeezing that one, slim ray of hope for all it's worth.

Peter Moore explains EA Sports' PC snub originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 Jul 2008 01:00:00 EST. Remember last month when EA mentioned that coaching simulator NFL Head Coach '09 would only be available as part of the Madden '09 Collector's Edition? Yeah, funny story about that -- it's not true. EA revealed in a press release today that the game will actually also be sold as a $49.99 standalone release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in time for the start of the new football season on Sept. 2.

We're a little skeptical that U.S. gamers will be willing to shell out nearly $50 bucks for a coaching simulator -- remember, the 2006 original NFL Head Coach was budget priced at $20, and still got savaged in reviews. Then again, Europeans seem to go nuts for the similar Football Simulator series of soccer-management sims, so maybe North America is just behind the curve on this one. Then again again, maybe we Americans are just too discriminating to enjoy a game where you simply manage a sport rather than actively participating in it. We report, you work out your patriotic vitriol in the comments thread.
EA's NFL Head Coach '09 gets full-price, standalone release Sept. 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Apr 2008 16:30:00 EST. Who says mo-cap is the technical capturing of data to create realistic, fluid motion in gaming that's devoid of soul? Sports writer Bill "The Sports Guy" Simmons did a piece for ESPN's new show, E:60, wherein he heads to EA Sports studios to undergo the motion capture process for NBA Live 08. He even schools Boston Celtics all-star Paul "The Truth" Pierce in the process -- sorta.

While you might have seen mo-cap videos before, Simmons speaks candidly about the technology, observing that sweat makes the suit moist. TMI there, Bill. T-M-I.

Never let it be said that EA can't innovate! Whatever we usually think of EA Sports, their new Family Play control system is really cool.

Madden '08, NBA Live '08, and FIFA Soccer '08 will all include Wiimote-and-Nunchuk-based control schemes that will allow players to "take full control of the game"-- running, passing, kicking (not so much in NBA Live) and such. But they'll also include simplified Wiimote-only control schemes that reduce the games to Wii Sports-level . The controls become fully gestural, and the AI takes over some of the gameplay tasks that were previously yours.

The coolest part? You can switch back and forth on the fly, just by plugging in or unplugging the Nunchuk. Even the method of choosing controls is streamlined. We are quite impressed.
EA Sports introduces kid-friendly waggle with "Family Play" originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Jul 2007 13:45:00 EST. It looks like this year, EA's making an effort to require you to play the game, rather than just simming your way through it, though we can't say for certain that you can't get any of them via simming. The last three did grab our eye, though, they all have blatant product placement for Pontiac and Old Spice, even using the company's respective logo. Fight Night Round Three kind of did the same thing, though the events were "sponsored by the companies". Still, give the list a look, and if your like EA Sports previous offering, hopefully this will fit the bill this year.
NCAA Achievements have product placement originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 30 Jun 2007 23:45:00 EST. Yes, that's right, there are people who care about how many degrees your bat swings, or how a ball travels in the air, or other more confusing arithmetic terms we really don't want to think about at this moment. The fact remains that in addition to making a great looking soccer game, EA wants to let you know they're putting a ton of math into FIFA 08. They've got a 22-page document detailing all their little formulae for the simple matter of shooting the ball. Impressive, no?

We're not going to talk about the graphics. We're excited to hear about all this math! Tricks will play important roles instead of being nothing more than flashy nonsense and luckily, their implementation is simple, fluid, and realistic. Plugging gaps in your defenses is easier with the new ability for the team's formation to change on the fly. If you'd rather do it yourself (kind of like playing Final Fantasy XII without Gambits ... try it, it's a hell of a lot of fun and an insane challenge on Active Mode), you can click the R3 button and take control of your keeper. Everything seems less ... automated, more real and dependent on your actions as a skilled player. We're glad -- EA needs to put more attention like this into all their games.
FIFA 08 looks great, uses lots of math to kick balls originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 05:00:00 EST. That's just fine. Next, we've got a glimpse of the latest entry in the NBA Live franchise -- this one brings us into the '08 realms of dribbling goodness. We hope. Ever since getting moved onto the 360, let's face it, EA hasn't tried very hard to make the best of the new hardware. The games have been lackluster, lacking polish, lackadaisical, lack-a-lack-a-lack... you get the idea. They've not been the best they could be. So where's '08 going that the previous entries didn't, aside from to the PS3?

Back to basics. Before adding any crazy control gimmicks, EA is building the game from the basics up. Vastly improved character animations, ball physics (passing and shooting, etc), improved framerate, not to mention the characters actually appeared to walk on the court instead of slide around on top of it. From what all was mentioned in GameSpot's preview, it appears that (dare we say it?) EA is actually trying to make a great game instead of updating a roster, tossing in a gimmick, and rolling around in their mountain of gold coins, a la DuckTales. We'll see how it pans out later this year.
First glimpse at NBA Live '08 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 04 May 2007 12:45:00 EST. And, as a bonus, they smell like freshly cut grass! Cool huh? Our overall impressions are that the screens show off PGA Tour 08's soothing lighting effects and nice face mapping, but we feel the grass and anti-aliasing are quite "blah". Though, we'll leave the fate and overall opinion of Tiger's latest golfing venture in your hands. So, is anyone actually pumped getting their golf on?
Watch your head, PGA Tour 08 screens incoming originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 May 2007 16:05:00 EST. It started at 8:00 PM EST and they had the required 1000 online users at 8:10 PM EST. Unfortunately, it didn't go down without a hiccup or two. Apparently, while people who actually were in the lobby got the Achievement, everyone else who was just listening to the ESPN Radio or another activity while online did not. That sucks, since those very people counted towards the total online count. A360P is going to try to get a hold of EA and see if they can award the Achievement to those deserving who did not get acknowledged during the event. Well, at the very least, they have another shot on the 25th, and after this past weekend's "troubleshooting", they know what to do to be eligible for the 100 Gamerscore. Were you at the event, and if you didn't get the Achievement, are you going to give it another shot on the 25th?
Achieve360Points NBA Live Achievement Successful originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 12 Feb 2007 10:00:00 EST. It was going to be the first Xbox 360 title to official support the resolution announced back in September. But that was yesterday, and this is today. EA has announced that NBA Street: Homecourt will be shipping on February 20th, a month earlier. On top of that, the game will support 1080p at 30fps among the other standard resolutions, squeezing out VT3 as the premiere title to deliver the 1080p goods. For those who can't make it for the 25th's attempt, or simply can't wait that long to unlock the achievement, A360P is holding the event on the 10th-11th of this month, scheduled nearly two weeks before Xbox360Achievements.org's. A360P's event is on a slightly different schedule, taking place in the evening at 8:00 PM Eastern as opposed to the Sunday afternoon (3:00 PM EST) for x360a. So far, no one has unlocked this yet, but here's your chance to be part of what may be your only chance to get the 100 Gamerscore Achievement. So mark your calendars, because this is happening on Sunday, February 25th at 8:00 PM GMT. So for our North American readers, that's 3:00 PM EST and 12:00 Noon PST. Central and Mountain time zones are relied on to have passed Grade 2 Math at this point in their life and are on their own.

According to EA Sports, you do not need to be playing a game to be counted as online, but can just listen to the ESPN radio service. Apparently, during x360a's last attempt, which was on very short notice, they got an astonishing 917 people online. This time has a lot more lead time, and is getting a lot more publicity. We hope they pull through, and all of you fanboys out there should do your part. If you own NBA Live 07, sign on during the specified time on the 25th. If you don't then use Gamefly, GameAccess, or Blockbuster to get your hands on a copy by 3 weeks from now. Come on, let's make some Xbox 360 history here. Are you going to "Jump In"?
X360A.org goes for elusive NBA Live 07 Achievement originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 04 Feb 2007 16:30:00 EST. Although the focus of the letter is on NBA Live '07, with YouTube links showing the latest issues with the series, it touches on the general unhappiness with other declining EA franchises like Madden and FIFA. "At one time, EA was producing the best titles money could buy and one had little reason to look elsewhere. Now gamers have a sense that if you want the best, it's not EA."

And as an aside, more than a few eyebrows were raised when press copies and reviews of NBA Live '07 came trickling in a week after the game went on shelves, almost as if EA knew they produced a sub-par product. Hollywood employs this same tactic on bad movies so they can get as much money back before the word gets out how bad things really are.

Although the issues expressed by the fans of NBA Live '07 are positively valid, there is the alternative NBA 2K7 from 2K Games which was released the same day as NBA Live '07. This doesn't help Madden fans who experienced similar issues with Madden '07, but have no recourse because of EA's NFL exclusivity deal. In the case of Madden, EA also shows apparent ignorance toward reasonable proprosals by fans to fix the series.

It's certainly cause for concern that EA Sports is taking the "we'll patch it later" stance toward console games this early. This is the first generation capable of console patching and ideally should be used to fix subtle errors. Instead EA is following the PC model that console gamers have fled from: ship first, patch later. It's probably time for sports gamers to show consumer activism and take their money to other franchises. That'll get EA's attention faster than any letter.
EA Sports perfecting mediocrity originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Oct 2006 20:00:00 EST. Larenaudie became the president of VU Games' Asia Pacific operations two years ago, and it's rumored that the strong ties he developed with The9 during that time will result in the Chinese publisher licensing EA's popular FIFA series.
Originally conceived by industry luminary Trip Hawkins to be an independent publishing house for fresh talent, EA now resembles more of a Matrix-like incubator of human wage slaves producing endless, disposable iterations of worn-out franchises.

But the company everyone loves to hate wasn't always that way. The article stirs up fond memories of some of the best computer games the early eighties had to offer. Who needed ABC afterschool movies when you could play Archon, M.U.L.E., and The Bard's Tale until dinner? But the publish-only model eventually gave way to development aspirations, and then the fun began! Read all about some of EA's most infamous acquisitions, and what steps the über developer needs to take in order to repair its tarnished image.

For instance, EA is doing its part to make gaming more attractive to the female demographic, so the company can't be all bad. For $10 more than the standard editions, EA Sports is offering a John Madden career retrospective, the first season of Madden Nation, and production featurettes with ESPN's Trey Wingo and bands featured in the game's soundtrack. EA and EPSN had signed a 15-year partnership agreement and this is the first worthwhile use of that. What was displayed was the ability to have a running ticker at the bottom of the screen of your game displaying real world news and scores. If you'd rather hear it than passingly read it, you can vie for the live podcasts of ESPN radio. Or if you want a break from gaming, you can watch ESPN original shows. Cool.

This was shown using the XBox 360, but we were told the same abilities and technologies will be available for the Playstation 3. Is there any other sort of integration we'd like to see? Perhaps an online tournament covered by an actual ESPN show -- so you feel like you really are coaching the next champs. Think about it: a live ticker of all the current tourney matches, commentary by famous ESPN fellas (if they can take it seriously), recaps, etc. That would be really cool, but mixing reality with gaming like this is an excellent first step.
EA and ESPN integrate real sports into our fake sports originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Jul 2006 16:00:00 EST. The former Disney Asia executive cites online development, mobile projects, and localized content as being the "three pillars" that will help the gaming giant's future growth across the Asian markets.

According to Niermann, "Our strategy is really build to buy. We have to build the expertise, we have to build that ability to make the games locally, to publish the games ourselves, to operate the games if it's online. We can bring in great tools, great technology, great IP, great management - but we need the other half of the equation, which is somebody that has actually built a game in the local market. I think together, that makes us much more powerful."

To that end, EA is teaming with Korean developer NeoWiz for an online version of the popular FIFA franchise. Time will tell if the Shandas and Webzens of the world agree to play along with EA's plan for global domination.
EA's plan to rule Asia originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 May 2006 21:35:00 EST.
