Pencil Test Studios, a company manned by one of the designers and two of the artists responsible for 1996's classic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Neverhood"><em>The Neverhood</em></a>, is seeking $900,000 in crowdsourced funding via <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1949537745/armikrog">Kickstarter</a> in order to fuel the creation of its new claymation point-and-click adventure project, <em>Armikrog</em>.<br />
<br />
While story details are sparse, the game's overall premise is pretty straightforward: Tommynaut, a space explorer, and Beak-Beak, his blind, talking alien dog, crash land onto a "weird planet" and are somehow imprisoned in a fortress called "Armikrog." Assuming it's fully funded, the game will be available in both Steam and DRM-free flavors for PC, OSX and Linux.<br />
<br />
In addition to being helmed by <em>Neverhood</em> alumni Doug TenNapel, Mike Dietz and Ed Schofield, <em>Armikrog</em> will also feature a soundtrack scored by <em>Neverhood</em>/<em>Skullmonkeys</em> composer Terry S. Taylor, in addition to voice work by <em>Mystery Science Theater 3000</em>/<a href="http://www.rifftrax.com/"><em>RiffTrax</em></a>'s Michael J. Nelson, <em>Napoleon Dynamite</em>'s Jon Heder, Rob Paulsen of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0667326/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1">every cartoon from your childhood</a>, Tekzilla's Veronica Belmont and PvPOnline's Scott Kurtz.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/28/armikrog-stop-motions-you-toward-its-kickstarter-campaign/">Armikrog stop-motions you toward a Kickstarter from Neverhood vets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 May 2013 19:15:00 EST. Any price entered will purchase the basic bundle of eight Interplay games, which includes <em>Conquest of the New World</em> and <em>Evolva</em>, among other things. Paying more than the average price ($11.50 as of press time) unlocks 12 more games, and dropping down $35.00 or more brings the bundle's total up to 32 games.<br /><br />The $35 bundle also includes 21 different soundtracks, 37 wallpapers, 410 pieces of artwork, a 205-page "Fallout Bible" and "much more." Click <a href="http://www.gog.com/interplay/">here</a> for the full list of games in each bundle.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/18/pay-what-you-want-interplay-bundles-on-gog-for-a-limited-time/">Pay-what-you-want Interplay bundles on GOG for a limited time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 20:30:00 EST. Perry doesn't see that earthly retreat lasting forever.<br /><br />"It's one of those things that, no one's got the time right now. I'm sure it's going to happen, I just can't tell you exactly when," Perry told <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-07-17-david-perry-sure-a-new-earthworm-jim-will-be-made">Eurogamer</a> during last week's Develop conference in Brighton, England. "It's just a bunch of guys who all have their own thing. Everyone has their own company. So, to get them to stop what they're doing and work on a game is very difficult, but it's something they all want to do." Perry explains some of the old gang keep in touch on Facebook, and says the obvious idea of doing a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kickstarter">Kickstarter</a> campaign was considered.<br /><br />"The thing we had talked about in the past is Jim had been in retirement. So, he's been sitting at home watching movies and eating popcorn. He's grossly overweight now. The plan was to start with him literally getting off the sofa, and it's a disaster because he just hasn't done anything since. But he's got to get back into action again." Perry also explained that this hypothetical new game would definitely be 2D, with "little" camera control.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/17/david-perry-sure-new-earthworm-jim-will-eventually-happen/">David Perry 'sure' new Earthworm Jim will eventually happen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Jul 2012 22:30:00 EST. Every title is $3, actually, making the entire bundle $96 -- a savings of $96. Yes, that's what we meant with "buy 16, get 16 free." This could also be the "buy one, get two half off" sale, or the "buy 8, get 16 half off" sale. Take your pick; any way they're all good old games for a great new price.<br /><br />The sale runs from now until Monday at 11:59 p.m. EDT.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/13/good-old-games-taking-half-off-interplay-titles-this-weekend/">Good Old Games taking half off Interplay titles this weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Apr 2012 20:30:00 EST. PS3 owners who've been jealous of nearly every other platform's chance to get their hands on the unbridled power of "puh-laaazmuh" will be pleased to learn Gameloft's HD remake of <em>Earthworm Jim</em>, appropriately titled <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/earthworm-jim"><em>Earthworm Jim HD</em></a>, will <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/07/29/coming-tuesday-to-psn-earthworm-jim-hd-for-ps3/">hit the PlayStation Store</a> next Tuesday, August 3.<br />
<br />
So, what bonus features has Gameloft injected into this version of the game as an apology for its tardiness? Well, it's available for $9.99, which is ... the exact same price as the Xbox 360 version. However, you don't have to do any conversions to arbitrary "Microbucks" -- it's just ten dollars, plain and simple. That's what the PS3 version offers: <em>Convenience</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/29/earthworm-jim-hd-wriggles-onto-psn-august-3/">Earthworm Jim HD wriggles onto PSN August 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 14:20:00 EST. So there's a trailer out for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/earthworm-jim-hd"><em>Earthworm Jim HD</em></a>. Don't worry, it looks just fine. Gameloft was even kind enough to toss in some footage of the game's new co-op levels. Heck, we even get to see some entirely new single-player levels, replete with jet-packing grandmas and ... keyboard cat.<br />
<br />
That's all well and good, but what is <em>up</em> with Jim's voice? Maybe it's just the difference between old, muffled 16-bit samples and the modern sound clarity we enjoy today, but something seems <em>off</em>. Like "someone just grabbed the janitor and told him to say 'groovy' into a microphone" <em>off</em>. Come on, Gameloft. Surely <em>someone</em> over there has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tommy-tallarico">Tommy Tallarico's</a> number*.<br />

<strong>Update:</strong> Commenter Troy points us to an interview on <a href="http://8th-circuit.com/?q=content/exclusive-earthworm-jim-hd-interview-anne-joelle-casenaz">The 8th Circuit</a>, which has a few details on <em>Earthworm Jim HD</em>'s multiplayer. According to Gameloft's Anne-Joelle Casenaz, the XBLA and PSN versions will feature "brand new levels with exclusive enemies and up to 4 players in co-op multiplayer!" So there you go: It's co-op.<br />

According to a list of Achievements unearthed by <a href="http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/earthworm-jim/achievements/">Xbox 360 Achievements</a>, it looks like the upcoming <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/earthworm-jim-hd"><em>Earthworm Jim HD</em></a> will feature some form of multiplayer. There are two Achievements for multiplayer, one awarded for being "'No. 1' in each Xbox Live multiplayer level" and another for completing all multiplayer levels. It's hard to imagine how multiplayer would work, though <a href="http://www.gamerbytes.com/2010/05/earthworm_jim_hd_to_feature_mu.php">GamerBytes</a> offers up the possibility of speed run competitions or a multiplayer variant of the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlZR422qeqs">snot bungee mini-game</a>.<br />
<br />
We'd also suggest that the space races between levels could work as well. Also, given the title of the second Achievement is "World Partnership," the multiplayer could be cooperative in nature.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/27/earthworm-jim-hd-to-feature-multiplayer-somehow/">Earthworm Jim HD features 4-player co-op [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 May 2010 22:00:00 EST. The main highlight of the latest transmission from Fort Nintendo is that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bit-trip-runner"><em>Bit.Trip Runner</em></a>, the quirky rhythm-platformer from Aksys Games, is scheduled for release on WiiWare on May 17. Seriously, guys -- get on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/05/bit-trip-runner-wiiware-trailer">the hype train</a> before it pulls out of the station. <br />
<br />
As for DSiWare, there's a whole bunch of games being released over the next few months, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/photo-dojo"><em>Photo Dojo</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/x-scape">X-Scape</a> </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/metal-torrent"><em>Metal Torrent</em></a>. Head past the break for the full list of whats and whens.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/23/bit-trip-runner-sprints-to-wiiware-may-17-summer-dsiware-releas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Bit.Trip Runner sprints to WiiWare May 17; Summer DSiWare releases dated</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/23/bit-trip-runner-sprints-to-wiiware-may-17-summer-dsiware-releas/">Bit.Trip Runner sprints to WiiWare May 17; Summer DSiWare releases dated</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Apr 2010 19:15:00 EST. Rather than posit that, yes, we are <em>obviously</em> the biggest non-arthropod invertebrate fans out there, we'll just point out how neat we think these "I love Jim" shirts are. They can be found, appropriately, in the latest trailer for upcoming digitally distributed HD re-release <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/earthworm-jim-hd">Earthworm Jim HD</a></em>. We could use a bit more video from the gameplay department, sure, but what we see looks as good (if not better) than what we last saw <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/first-details-of-earthworm-jim-remake-unearthed/">last September in screenshots</a>. <br />
<br />
The video also introduces a contest for fans of the series that sees five winners being flown to NY to Gameloft's studio for an early chance to check out <em>EJHD</em> on Xbox Live Arcade this May. To enter, interested parties should head over to the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgameloft&amp;h=c40f14f5c9c91ebf65cbf0b75e15d5e0">Gameloft Facebook page</a> and sign up, write a 500 character or less message on "<a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=109436925762325">Jim's wall</a>" explaining your "most memorable moment playing <em>Earthworm Jim</em>" (like that time your brother Charlie slipped a sleeping pill into your chocolate milk so he could play it uninterrupted for four hours straight), and voila ici! The directions also note that the entry period ends on May 2, so we'd suggest you get to it -- right after you check out the trailer we've dropped below the fold.<br />

Nintendo of America hasn't made any announcements about a release date, but this opens the slim possibility that we could see it in North America next week as well!<br />
<br />
It's not exactly <em>Earthworm Jim</em> as we remember: Nintendo of Europe's <a href="http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/games/dsiware/earthworm_jim_16697.html">info page</a> for the game reveals that, in addition to what looks like a faithful port of the Super NES game, the DSiWare version has "
<meta charset="utf-8">facial-expression-based challenges" that require you to make a particular face at the DSi's camera. <br />
<br />
Hopefully every single challenge will require a "simultaneously frustrated and delighted" expression, because that's the face we all make unconsciously while playing <em>Earthworm Jim</em>.

Unsurprisingly, it looks an awful lot like <em>Earthworm Jim</em>. The top screen is where the classic action takes place, while the touchscreen has been reserved for a level progress meter and a pause button (because the start button is just <em>so</em> hard to reach, right?). Another screenshot shows the bottom screen offering gameplay tips as well (hint: shoot the bad guys). All in all, as GamerBytes also points out, it looks essentially like the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/earthworm-jim-now-launching-cows-on-iphone/">iPhone version</a> of the game. <br />
<br />
There is, however, a fairly obvious distinction between the two: The physical buttons of the DSi will make the submarine level significantly less <em>impossible</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/24/earthworm-jim-headed-to-dsiware-first-screens-released/">Earthworm Jim headed to DSiWare, first screens released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Mar 2010 20:55:00 EST. As <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/sunsoft-kicks-off-american-return-with-blaster-master-on-virtual/">promised</a>, Sunsoft's brought <em>Blaster Master</em> to the Virtual Console -- though we think the impact is somewhat dulled by the quantity of other games available for download this week. There's a total of 11 different games available, so head past the break for the full list.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/14/nintendoware-weekly-bejeweled-blaster-master-earthworm-jim-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NintendoWare weekly: Bejeweled, Blaster Master, Earthworm Jim 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/14/nintendoware-weekly-bejeweled-blaster-master-earthworm-jim-2/">NintendoWare weekly: Bejeweled, Blaster Master, Earthworm Jim 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Dec 2009 13:20:00 EST. It's a great game, but trying the iPhone version means you're willing to punish yourself by attempting the already-difficult run-and-gun without the benefit of a D-pad or buttons. We're going to have nightmares if we think too long about playing the submarine level that way.<br /><br />In addition to the download-anywhere convenience and painful controller substitution, the iPhone/iPod Touch release lets you play your own iPod music as you play. That should be a welcome addition to one intentionally annoying level.<br /><br />After the break, see gameplay footage captured by <a href="http://toucharcade.com/2009/10/20/earthworm-jim-grooooovy/">Touch Arcade</a>.<br /><br /><strong><em>Earthworm Jim</em> ($4.99)</strong> <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=334838620&amp;mt=8&amp;uo=6"><img height="15" border="0" width="61" src="http://ax.itunes.apple.com/images/badgeitunes61x15dark.gif" alt="Earthworm Jim" /></a><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://appshopper.com/games/earthworm-jim">AppShopper</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/earthworm-jim-now-launching-cows-on-iphone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthworm Jim now launching cows on iPhone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/earthworm-jim-now-launching-cows-on-iphone/">Earthworm Jim now launching cows on iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 20:25:00 EST. And while the next-gen version has some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/29/first-details-of-earthworm-jim-remake-unearthed/">cleaned-up graphics</a>, the iPhone release, as seen in the new trailer (after the break) might as well be a port. If you ignore the total lack of buttons, it might as well be the Genesis or SNES game. And speaking of buttons, <em>have fun </em>playing that submarine level on a touchscreen.<br /><br />If the graphical improvements aren't more obvious in the WiiWare release, then the only real difference between the game on Virtual Console and WiiWare will be one extra level and difficulty selection. <em>Awkward!</em><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/14/earthworm-jim-on-iphone-looks-familiar/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Earthworm Jim on iPhone looks familiar</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/14/earthworm-jim-on-iphone-looks-familiar/">Earthworm Jim on iPhone looks familiar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Oct 2009 23:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.gamerbytes.com/2009/09/earthworm_jim_hd_created_from.php">GamerBytes</a> has some details about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/19/new-earthworm-jim-less-new-than-expected-its-a-remake/">remake</a> of invertebrate warrior Earthworm Jim's first outing. Speaking with Gameloft, the graphically updated title will be based on the Sega Genesis version, but will have "smoother animations" and feature several difficulty levels. The game will also include the bonus "Big Bruty" level that was featured in the Sega CD and PC releases of the original.<br /><br /><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/earthworm-jim"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a> will blast onto Xbox Live Arcade first, followed by PSN and WiiWare. The company then removed what was at that point the <em>clear</em> winner from its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/sega-wants-your-vote-for-the-next-genesis-xbla-game/">XBLA poll</a>.<br /><br />Why would a new <em>Earthworm Jim</em> prevent the release of an old one? Because the new one, <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/698438/New-Earthworm-Jim-A-Remake-Of-The-Original.html">G4TV's The Feed</a> reports, is a <em>remake</em> and not an original game. That means it <em>isn't</em> the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/earthworm-jim-4-announced-by-an-overenthusiastic-interplay-no-p/"><em>Earthworm Jim 4</em></a> announced last year, and that the same game will be available on both Virtual Console (the Genesis version was released on VC in <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/vc-monday-madness-earthworm-jim/">October</a>) and WiiWare.<br />

Well, specifically, it announced that <em>Gameloft</em> will develop and publish a new <em>Earthworm Jim </em>game on those platforms. Which is ... considerably less exciting than if original creators Shiny Entertainment (now a part of Double Helix) were to return to the franchise. However, it <em>is</em> possible that this is the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/earthworm-jim-4-announced-by-an-overenthusiastic-interplay-no-p/">"<em>Earthworm Jim 4</em>" project</a> for which creator Doug TenNapel was hired to consult -- which would be very groovy indeed.<br />
<br />
The recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/sega-wants-your-vote-for-the-next-genesis-xbla-game/">XBLA Genesis poll</a> proved that there is a sizable <em>Earthworm Jim</em> fanbase, a fact that must have delighted executives at Interplay and Gameloft as they prepared to make this announcement. We didn't realize there are still that many <em>Earthworm Jim</em> fans in the world after <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthworm_jim_3d">Earthworm Jim 3D</a></em> -- a game with which we hope this new release has <em>nothing</em> in common. <br />
<br />
<em>Earthworm Jim</em> will debut on XBLA in the "last quarter of 2009," and will remain exclusive to that platform for one month.<br />

In celebration of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/joystiq-remembers-the-sega-genesis/">20th anniversary of the Genesis</a>, Sega is asking you, The Internet, to pick the next Genesis game to arrive on <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a>. It doesn't look like an easy choice either, as the list of candidates has some of the console's best games. All told, you can cast your vote for:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Earthworm Jim</em></li>
    <li><em>Streets of Rage</em></li>
    <li><em>Golden Axe II</em></li>
    <li><em>Toejam &amp; Earl</em></li>
    <li><em>Shining Force<br /></em></li>
    <li><em>Revenge of Shinobi</em></li>
    <li><em>Wonderboy in Monster World</em></li>
</ul>
Sega is accepting votes until August 21, so head over to <a href="http://www.genesispoll.com/">genesispoll.com</a> and vote. We'd be remiss not to mention that all of these games are available on <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a> already, but XBLA is guaranteed to add a few extra features, like game saving, Achievements and online multiplayer. Keep that in mind when casting your vote.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/sega-wants-your-vote-for-the-next-genesis-xbla-game/">Sega wants your vote for the next Genesis XBLA game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dave-perry">Dave Perry</a> will always have a place in our hearts, and so it's a bit difficult these days to write pieces on the man who created <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/earthworm-jim"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a>. Doing his usual job of <em>outlandish claim-staking</em>, the man now known mostly for his company <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gaikai">Gaikai</a> and its streaming game service recently spoke to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/dave-perry-talks-canned-game-plague">Eurogamer</a> about a canceled game of his, named <em>Plague</em>. <br /><br />"It was a little too big for Atari," he says. Allegedly, he was working with an author and intended to make a movie of the game. "It was a big deal," he added. He goes on to say that it included "nano-weapons" that would "generate objects and delete [them] in real-time." He even teases that the game idea is "nowhere near done." Unfortunately, he's a bit busy at the moment trying to get his unicorn-powered magic carpet off the ground to work on it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/dave-perry-discusses-canned-atari-project-plague/">Dave Perry discusses canned Atari project, 'Plague'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 23:00:00 EST. According to a recent <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1057232/000117091809000147/0001170918-09-000147-index.idea.htm">SEC filing</a>, the publisher ended 2008 completely broke. But don't worry! Interplay has a plan: Get more money from somewhere. <br /><br />"We continue to seek external sources of funding," the company stated, "including but not limited to, incurring debt, the selling of assets or securities, licensing of certain product rights in selected territories, selected distribution agreements, and/or other strategic transactions sufficient to provide short-term funding, and achieve our long-term strategic objectives." We assume that those long-term strategic objectives would include paying off the new debts incurred in order to provide short-term funding.<br /><br />The document <em>does</em> mention that the publisher continues to work on "the development of a MMOG code named: "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/24/former-fallout-dev-rejoins-interplay-for-project-v13-mmo/">Project:V13</a>" (the alleged <em>Fallout</em> MMO) as well as "sequels to some of <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/sequel-alert-earthworm-jim-mdk-and-dark-alliance/">our most successful games</a>, including <em>Earthworm Jim</em>, <em>Dark Alliance</em>, <em>Descent </em>and <em>MDK</em>." All decent reasons to hope the company doesn't tank.<br /> <br />[Via <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2009/04/16/interplay-ended-2008-with-no-money/">VG247</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/17/interplay-still-out-of-money/">Interplay still out of money</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Apr 2009 18:30:00 EST. The Genesis version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/vc-monday-madness-earthworm-jim/"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a> never made it overseas, so the VC release is the first for <em>this</em> particular version of <em>Earthworm Jim.</em> There isn't even a 100 point surcharge for the import!<br /><br />The other VC download is <em>Jigoku Meguri,</em> a Taito platformer about a monk in hell. The name "Jigoku Meguri" (Tour of Hell) also apparently refers to a <a href="http://www.kyushu-tourist.com/jigokumeguri.html">real-life tour</a> of a bunch of hot springs! Neat. <br />
<ul>
    <li><em><a href="http://vc.sega.jp/vc_ewj/">Earthworm Jim</a></em> (Mega Drive, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)<br /></li>
    <li><em><a href="http://vc-pce.com/jpn/j/title/jigokumeguri.html">Jigoku Meguri</a></em> (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)</li>
</ul>
Along with those two games, three rather interesting WiiWare titles are available. Prope's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/lets-catch-up-with-propes-other-game/"><em>Let's Catch</em></a> is officially the first release from Yuji Naka's new Sega-funded studio, and probably the first game Yuji Naka has done any real work on in quite some time. <em>Sorcery Blade</em> is the first WiiWare RPG. And <em>1 Meke! Dasshutsu Game My Home-hen </em>(something like <em>One Extraction! Escape Game * My Home Edition</em>) basically came out of nowhere. It appears to be a cutesy, comedic "room escape" game, like a colorful version of <em>The Crimson Room.</em><br />
<ul>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/w2kj/index.html">Let's Catch</a> </em>(1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)</li>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wsbj/index.html">Sorcery Blade</a> </em>(1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)</li>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wemj/index.html">1 Meke! Dasshutsu Game My Home-hen</a> </em>(1 player, 500 Wii Points)</li>

Of all of the beloved video game characters that have fallen by the wayside (or been forced there by a string of subpar games) Earthworm Jim is one we'd most like to see make a comeback. C'mon, game publishers, the guy practically oozes charm, just give him a gun and some things to shoot and you're three-fourths of the way there. <br /><br />For now though, we'll have to sate ourselves with the original <em>Earthworm Jim</em> (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) on Virtual Console, which we suppose will have to do, if only to square off once more with Bob the Killer Goldfish.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/earthworm-jim-swings-onto-virtual-console/">Earthworm Jim swings onto Virtual Console</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 09:30:00 EST. Not long ago, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/29/stars-catalogue-music-download-service-finally-revealed/">news of Nintendo selling music</a> appeared in our RSS feed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/rumor-nintendo-selling-songs-in-exchange-for-stars/">weeks early</a>, only to lead to a dead link after it was hastily pulled by Nintendo. And now another slippage has occurred, with Nintendo accidentally revealing (what we suspect are the contents of) tomorrow's PAL Virtual Console update: <em>Earthworm Jim</em> and <em>Shining Force II</em>.<br /><br />Once again, the news appears in our RSS feed (as seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/ewj_shiningforce_rss_reader.jpg">here</a>) while the story itself has been yanked from Ninty's site. All being well then, tomorrow's VC update for Europe and Australia <em>should</em> read something like this:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/earthworm-jim-other-interplay-games-coming-to-virtual-console/"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/vc-tuesday-srpg-tuesday/"><em>Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal</em></a> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points</li>
</ul>
These aren't set in stone yet, so we'll label this as a rumor, but it looks likely. Also: "Hurray!" for both of these.<br /><br /><u>Update</u>: And it's confirmed: those are your titles for this week, PAL people! When you stop to think about iconic characters for each of the big three a few easy ones come to mind. <em>Master Chief</em> owning on Xbox, <em>Super Mario</em> fighting for Nintendo and <em>Kratos</em> breaking dudes on the PlayStation (or insert your own characters if these examples don't work for you). One character that had the potential to be a huge gaming icon after his introduction was <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Earthworm-Jim/">Earthworm Jim</a></em>.<br /><br /><em>Jim</em> had it all. Fun games, ridiculous cartoon and even <a href="http://www.bigbadtoystore.com/bbts/menu.aspx?menu=555">action figures</a>. Then one day the team that owned the rights to <em>Earthworm Jim</em> decided to call it a night and sell the character off for fear they wouldn't be able to bring him into the 3D world. David Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment, has recently come clean on one of the biggest mistakes his company ever made; letting <em>Jim</em> get away.<br /><br />"[Selling the rights of <em>Earthworm Jim</em> to Interplay] turned out to be the dumbest move ever," Perry said in an interview with <a href="http://games.kikizo.com/features/dave-perry-interview-sep08-p2.asp">Kikizo</a>. "There's been other versions of <em>Earthwork Jim</em> done that were done without our permission really, licensing deals, and I was very unhappy about them." We'd be happy enough to see the original titles added to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a> or any news on the announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/earthworm-jim-4-announced-platform-unknown/ ">fourth title</a> in the series.<br /><br />You know, it's funny to hear losing<em> Earthworm Jim</em> was the biggest mistake in Shiny's history. We could have sworn it was just being involved with <em>Enter the Matrix</em>. Just saying.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/30/david-perry-selling-earthworm-jim-was-the-dumbest-move-ever/">David Perry: Selling Earthworm Jim was the "dumbest move ever"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Sep 2008 16:30:00 EST. <p>Dave Perry has been feeling a twinge of seller's remorse since washing his hands of former platforming icon, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/earthworm-jim"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a>. More than that, actually, as the Shiny Entertainment founder admits in a recent interview that, in hindsight, selling off the rights to annelid-made-superhero was probably the "dumbest move ever." <br /><br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/25/dave-perry-gamers-ignore-wiis-sloppy-controls/">outspoken Wii detractor</a> lays the blame for the miscue largely on the industry's transition away from 2D and into the third dimension in the 90s, his animators at the time unwilling to lay down their pencils in favor of the almighty polygon. Of course, the team eventually went on to create the fabulously tongue-in-cheek action epic, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mdk"><em>MDK</em></a>. Now, like Perry, we're left to sit and wonder what might have been as we wait for Interplay to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/earthworm-jim-begins-long-crawl-back-to-relevance/">push Jim up from the soil</a> once more. <br /></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/29/dave-perry-selling-earthworm-jim-was-the-dumbest-move-ever/">Dave Perry: Selling Earthworm Jim was the 'dumbest move ever'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 14:25:00 EST. Strangely, the new rating is for the Wii and Genesis versions, while another rating is already on the site for the Genesis game. Now it's got <em>two</em> E ratings! You know what the best thing about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e308">hanging out</a> with JC is? Hearing him <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-mega-man-9-feels-more-like-a-10/">gush about <em>Mega Man 9</em></a> and how he got a ton of time to play it. But, what's important is the question we have to ask.<br /><br />So, in thinking about what other retro dream sequels we could see on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/wiiware">WiiWare</a> (<em>Earthworm Jim 3, </em>for example), we'd like to know what you all can come up with. This week, arcade classic <span style="font-style: italic;">Burger Time</span> joins the lineup. If you've never played, you'll never turn your back on eggs or sausage again without fearing it's trying to kill you.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/12/gametap-thursday-the-return-of-earthworm-jim/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>GameTap Thursday: The return of Earthworm Jim</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/12/gametap-thursday-the-return-of-earthworm-jim/">GameTap Thursday: The return of Earthworm Jim</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jun 2008 03:00:00 EST. For <em>Earthworm Jim 4, </em>Interplay has brought back <a href="http://tennapel.nomoretangerines.com/">Doug TenNapel</a>, creator and original character voice of EWJ, as a creative consultant. No details of the game, including which platforms it is planned for, have been released, but Wii seems likely given the aforementioned VC announcement.<br /><br />Interplay is getting all the mileage out of Jim they can -- they've <em>also</em> announced both a new cartoon series and a feature film based on Jim. For his part, TenNapel is happy to be reunited with the character, and happy with Interplay's treatment: he states in his forum that "I<span class="postbody">nterplay is being really cool ... they're hungry, so they want to see Jim fly again. That's a different strategy than just sitting on a dead license and try to milk more re-hashes that continue to weaken the brand.</span>"<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/earthworm-jim-4-announced-by-an-overenthusiastic-interplay-no-p/">Earthworm Jim 4 announced by an overenthusiastic Interplay, no platform yet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 18:00:00 EST. It's been 13 years since he last starred in a good game, but people still call out for his return. If <em>Kid Icarus</em> had been a good game, he'd be the Pit of the annelid world. Now, after breaking our hearts with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/psps-earthworm-jim-gets-the-bird-goes-on-hold/">2007 cancellation</a> of his PSP game, it seems that Jim is finally poised to make his return. Interplay <a href="http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/prnewswire/200804221628PR_NEWS_USPR_____CLTU149.htm">has announced</a> a new deal with original creator Douglas TenNapel to revive Jim. <br /><br />So far, plans reportedly include "an animated series and feature film to expand the well known brand" and, most importantly, <em>Earthworm Jim 4</em> for unspecified consoles (which we sort of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/interplay-reaffirms-fallout-mmo-earthworm-jim-mdk-sequels/">knew about already</a>). As much as we'd like to be excited, after being strung along on Jim's hook for more than a decade, "cautiously optimistic" is the best we can muster.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/04/22/earthworm-jim-4-announced-platform-unknown/">X3F</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/earthworm-jim-begins-long-crawl-back-to-relevance/">Earthworm Jim begins long crawl back to relevance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 08:30:00 EST. We're very excited to hear Interplay has teamed up with the creator of <em>Earthworm Jim</em>, Douglas TenNapel, to <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3167525">bring us a fourth game in the series</a>. Especially after our PSP game was canceled by Atari. But, with the first two games getting pushed onto the Wii's virtual console and no platform announced for this game, we've a few reasons to think this won't get on the PSP.<br /><br />First, Interplay is just out of bankruptcy. They probably won't develop on the more expensive handheld again ... not yet, at least. Second, they've a history with Nintendo and Sega. Since Sega isn't around, well, you know. So while we'd love to say the game will make its way onto the PSP, we can't guarantee anything. Though, who knows, maybe they'll simply revive the old game and do a makeover. We'll keep tabs on this, so you keep your fingers crossed!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/23/earthworm-jim-4-announced-no-platform-yet/">Earthworm Jim 4 announced, no platform yet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Apr 2008 02:00:00 EST. When the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/12/interplay-resurrection-report-new-website/">rumors began</a> that there would be a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/sequel-alert-earthworm-jim-mdk-and-dark-alliance/">continuation</a> of the franchise, we were admittedly excited. Now, we discover that <em>Earthworm Jim 4</em> <a href="http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/prnewswire/200804221628PR_NEWS_USPR_____CLTU149.htm">will happen</a> and that the original creator, Douglas TenNapel, is back on the series as a creative consultant (he's also working on a cartoon and movie based on the property.) There were no other details announced (not even a platform), but given the changes in the industry since the series' heyday, we'd love to see <em>Earthworm Jim 4</em> take some sort of alternative to the usual "reinventions" of franchises. Perhaps a 2D side-scroller/platformer with 3d character models, released on XBLA (maybe even with episodic content?). Yeah, that's a nice dream.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/earthworm-jim-4-announced-platform-unknown/">Earthworm Jim 4 announced, platform unknown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Apr 2008 21:00:00 EST. Four classic Interplay Sega Genesis games are <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080421/clm116.html?.v=55">en route to the Wii's Virtual Console</a>. Dave Perry's classic platformers <em>Earthworm Jim</em> and <em>Earthworm Jim 2</em> will both be gracing the download service, along with the campy claymation action of <em>Clayfighter</em>, and the gross-out humor of <em>Boogerman</em>.<br /><br />According to the press release, all four titles will be the Sega Genesis versions of the games, despite having appeared on both Genesis and SNES. No word yet on when these titles we be released (but we're guessing it'll be on a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/virtualconsolemonday">Monday</a>).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/earthworm-jim-clayfighter-coming-to-virtual-console/">Earthworm Jim, Clayfighter coming to Virtual Console</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 20:30:00 EST. One of the most-requested Virtual Console games is now officially on the way, thanks to Interplay. And it's bringing friends! <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthworm_Jim"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a>, Shiny's platform/shooting adventure about a worm in a space suit, will be released on the Virtual Console "later this year," joined by its sequel, as well as the Claymation <em>SF2-</em>alike <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClayFighter">Clayfighter</a> </em>(developed by <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18335">Visual Concepts</a>) and <em>Boogerman </em>(full title: <em>Boogerman: A Pick and Flick Adventure).</em><br /><br />According to Gamasutra, these will be the Genesis versions of the games, which means that <em>Earthworm Jim</em> will include the extra "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_qUEbpnhKU">Intestinal Distress</a>" level that was exclusive to that version. <br /><br />Hey, Interplay had the rights to <a href="http://www.foxysofts.com/index.php?l=content/gba/anworld.inc"><em>Out of this World</em></a> at some point. Interplay, the original owners of the IP, has managed to come back to financial life due to the sale of the <em>Fallout</em> license to Bethesda Software. According to <a href="http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/04/10/interplay_returns_many_sequels_planned/1">bit-tech.net</a>, "Interplay is recruiting new developers and working to become entirely in-house and self-contained. The developer is hoping to start work on sequels for the <em>Earthworm Jim</em>, <em>MDK</em>, <em>Descent</em> and <em>Dark Alliance</em> franchises in the near future."<br /><br />With Interplay back in business, could the long-forgotten <em>Earthworm Jim</em> PSP project come back to life? Their plans? Sequels galore! Their first order of business, probably to keep funds rolling in, is to get a <em>Fallout MMO</em> out into the market. This should work, since the world of <em>Fallout</em> simply begs for an MMO-inspired tale. <br /><br />With the money gained from that, they plan to get cracking on established brands we haven't heard of since the original PlayStation -- like the <em>MDK</em> series. They were hard, but so very fun. Other very exciting projects would be <em>Earthworm Jim</em>, <em>Descent</em>, and <em>Dark Alliance</em>. We're very excited to have Interplay back and look forward to seeing what the future holds for them!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/interplay-back-in-business-planning-long-awaited-sequels/">Interplay back in business, planning long-awaited sequels</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. Today, Interplay <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=131091">confirmed</a> that all four of these franchises are prime targets for future sequels after their company recorded rather nice profits last year. We'd be fools if we thought we could speculate to how, when or in what form these franchises will receive the sequel treatment, though we hope that the Interplay gods give us <em>Earthworm Jim </em>on the Xbox 360. In retail form or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">XBLA</a> form, we'd be satisfied getting <em>Jim </em>either way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/sequel-alert-earthworm-jim-mdk-and-dark-alliance/">Sequel alert: Earthworm Jim, MDK and Dark Alliance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Apr 2008 12:30:00 EST.
