A few of the designs were straight out of Valve's hivemind, while a few existing products, such as the Alienware X51 and Bolt from Digital Storm were examples of the "Steam in your living room" initiative. Valve's display was meant to demonstrate a variety of form factors for living room-friendly designs, hardware engineer Jeff Keyzer said.<br /><br />Check out the complete gallery over on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/09/eyes-on-with-valves-steambox-prototypes/">Engadget</a>, especially that one design that looks like the baby of an original Xbox and a Gamecube. Keep in mind that all of the controllers are stand-in Logitechs, not prototypes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/09/up-close-with-valves-steam-box-prototypes/">Up close with Valve's Steam Box prototypes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Jan 2013 13:30:00 EST. Perhaps you didn't know (you probably did). Anyway, they got their hands on Nintendo's Wii U Pro Controller this week and they've got this handy video above with their impressions. Spoilers: it's kinda similar to an Xbox 360 controller. As a result, we generally leave the technical, delicate heavy lifting of PC hardware analysis to our compatriots at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/22/kepler-comes-of-age-nvidia-unveils-geforce-600-series-gpus/">Engadget</a>, who are much more coordinated and far less hot-pocket stained than us.<br /><br />Nvidia's newest graphics card, the GTX 680, is claimed to be the "fastest GPU in the world." It features an automatically variable clockspeed that maxes out GPU speed based on heat, "Adaptive VSync technology" for governing rendering speeds in sync with your monitor's refresh rate, and a new "TXAA" anti-aliasing algorithm, which we <em>desperately</em> hope stands for "Turbo Xtreme Anti-Aliasing." <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/22/kepler-comes-of-age-nvidia-unveils-geforce-600-series-gpus/">Head over to Engadget</a> for its complete breakdown of the card's intricacies. We don't know if you guys realize this or not, but CES is a big show. Like, <em>really big</em>. So big, in fact, that our crack team of ground forces couldn't possibly see all that there is to see, no matter how efficient and devilishly handsome they may be.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, our sister site Engadget was also at the show, and they got to spend some hands-on time with the RetroDuo Portable, an NES/SNES combo device from classic console fabricator Retro-Bit. Functionally, the device serves the same purpose as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/04/now-you-can-play-snes-while-crossing-busy-streets-with-supaboy/">SupaBoy</a> released by Hyperkin late last year, albeit with a few catches. Hit the source link for Engadget's full write up, and ask yourself a very important question: Which is more valuable, $90, or <em>memories</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/15/engadget-goes-hands-on-with-the-retroduo-portable-nes-snes/">Engadget goes hands-on with the RetroDuo Portable NES/SNES</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 15 Jan 2012 18:00:00 EST. Confession time: As much as we like meeting you guys at reader meetups, the real benefit to us is that, for a brief time, we can reclaim some control over our home offices. "Too much swag" might be considered an enviable problem but we don't see it that way.<br />
<br />
That's why we really need you to come out to Engadget's NYC Reader Meetup tomorrow, at Guastavino's, 344 E 59th Street in New York City. Of course, it's a free event but, knowing how much people like free things, you may want to get there early. We can only hold 1,000 people at a time so our recommendation is: Show up by 6:30 when the doors open. Festivities are going until 10:30 so if you can't make it until later, that's okay too, but it's first-come first-served.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned to find out how we're going to part with our swag. Until then, you'll find more info on the meetup at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/24/engadgets-nyc-reader-meetup-happens-tomorrow/?a_dgi=aolshare_twitter">Engadget</a>. It may surprise you to learn that, in some ways, our friends at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/27/sony-psp2-ngp-a-closer-look/">Engadget</a> are even nerdier than us. While we spent the night imagining all the NGP's gaming possibilities and repercussions, the Engadget staff probably spent it combing high resolution photos of Sony's new device, looking for secret buttons and wondering how many ... wires are in it, or something. <br />
<br />
But their obsession is your gain since they've come away with a ton of PSP comparison pics and even a video (which you'll find after the break). In the meantime, here's our technical analysis of the NGP: it's right-side up, which, as you can see from the photo, is a big step forward from its predecessor.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/time-for-bigger-pockets-ngp-filmed-and-photographed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time for bigger pockets: NGP filmed and photographed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/time-for-bigger-pockets-ngp-filmed-and-photographed/">Time for bigger pockets: NGP filmed and photographed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 09:45:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/show/">The Engadget Show</a> is teaming up with Joystiq's very own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/about">Chris Grant</a> this Saturday in a brand new episode that features the newly unveiled <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-move">PlayStation Move</a> motion controller. Sony's Richard Marks will take the stage, bringing some brand new tech demos that highlight what the controller is capable of. This will be the <em>first</em> time the general public will be able to get their hands on the device, with random members of the audience being able to play with the Move live on stage. And there's going to be a special surprise ...<br />
<br />
If you're in the NYC area, go to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/18/the-engadget-show-returns-this-saturday-march-20th-with-nichola/">Engadget</a> to find out more details on how to score a ticket for the show. If you can't make it, don't worry! Both Joystiq and Engadget will have a live stream of the episode available for you to watch this <strong>Saturday, March 20th at 5PM EST</strong>. Hope to see you there!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/16/go-behind-the-tech-of-playstation-move-at-the-engadget-show-this/">Go behind the tech of PlayStation Move at the Engadget Show this Saturday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 08:30:00 EST. Up against the likes of the ... um ... Popcorn Hour C200 and the ... erm ... Asus O!Play (we'd better leave the gadget stuff to the folks who know what they're talking about), Sony's PlayStation 3 Slim has triumphed as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/22/the-winners-of-the-2009-engadget-awards/">2009 Engadget Awards</a> winner in both "Game Console of the Year" and "Home Entertainment Device of the Year" categories. In fairness to the other game consoles, the Home Entertainment Device category didn't exactly feature Microsoft and Nintendo devices (the awards are for devices specifically released in 2009, as you might imagine), so the closest competitor (at 9.6 percent) was the HP MediaSmart Home Server -- the PS3 Slim took a commanding 54.3 percent of the vote.<br />
<br />
In terms of the Game Console of the Year award, the margins were significantly ... <em>slimmer</em>, with the PS3 taking 43.3 percent of the vote, followed close behind by the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/399-modern-warfare-2-themed-xbox-360-250gb-hdd-wireless-contr/">Xbox 360 </a><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/399-modern-warfare-2-themed-xbox-360-250gb-hdd-wireless-contr/">Modern Warfare 2</a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/399-modern-warfare-2-themed-xbox-360-250gb-hdd-wireless-contr/"> Edition</a> at 31.2 percent. The Slim also made the Editor's Choice top pick for Console of the Year, rounding out the love fest. Also of note, Wii's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/motionplus">MotionPlus</a></em> landed on both lists as well for "Game Accessory of the Year," beating out the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/11/eyes-on-modern-warfare-2-night-vision-goggles/">Modern Warfare 2</a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/11/eyes-on-modern-warfare-2-night-vision-goggles/"> night vision goggles</a> by just 4.7 percent. Your giant golden USB hubs will be mailed out shortly, winners! Congrats!<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/22/playstation-3-slim-sweeps-the-2009-engadget-awards/">PlayStation 3 Slim sweeps the 2009 Engadget Awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 20:30:00 EST. It's pretty adorable listening to our electronics-obsessed sister site Engadget talk about video games, a sensation not unlike listening to a music professor trying to connect with students over the latest Jay-Z album. ("Say kids, isn't this track <em>vibin</em>'?!") But we think they nailed it with their inclusion of the Xbox 360 in their "Ten gadgets that defined the decade" list. The piece reminds that the system's success seemed all but impossible at its launch, with a weaker feature set than the PS3 and a for-pay online service. <br />
<br />
Honorable mentions were given to the PS2 and the Wii, both of which will presumably fare better on Engadget's "Ten gadgets that didn't melt if you looked at them wrong" list.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/30/engadget-says-xbox-360-helped-define-the-decade/">Engadget says Xbox 360 helped define the decade</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Dec 2009 17:30:00 EST. The disc drive out back may be a bit precariously placed, but 'Hailrazer"'s portable "NCube" reeks of everything we'd want in a handheld version of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamecube">last-gen Nintendo console</a> (except for wireless multiplayer, of course). <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/09/the-ncube-probably-the-best-portable-gamecube-of-all-time/">Engadget</a> spotted the 90-hour-in-the-making portable GameCube over on - surprise, surprise! - the <a href="http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&amp;t=34490">Ben Heck forums</a>. A breakdown of the construction process can be found just after the break in video form, though you may want to set up the drool tray now before proceeding. <br /> <br /> All set? It seems that reports from way back in January of this year on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zune-hd">Zune HD</a> were true -- the upcoming handheld from Microsoft will in fact feature some form of handheld gaming when it releases <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/13/zune-hd-lands-september-15th-up-for-pre-order-today/">on September 15</a>. At least that's what we can glean from a recent advertisement for the OLED-laden iPod Touch competitor, hinting at a gaming feature (and showing a tiny snippet of a racing game). <br /><br />We've embedded the video after the break, originally found by <a href="http://zunited.net/index.php/topic,10774.0.html">Zunited</a>, but will presumably have to wait until at least Monday to hear more about the Zune HD's gaming features (though we've asked Microsoft for comment either way). Considering the fact that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/26/microsoft-unveils-zune-hd-zune-marketplace-headed-to-360/">Zune Marketplace is coming to Xbox 360</a>, we'll be holding fast hope for a Microsoft version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/minis">PSP's Minis</a> at some point in the near future. <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/12/zune-hd-promotional-videos-offer-brief-glimpse-at-3d-gaming/">Engadget</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/zune-hd-promo-video-offers-first-glimpse-of-gaming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Zune HD promo video offers first glimpse of gaming</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/12/zune-hd-promo-video-offers-first-glimpse-of-gaming/">Zune HD promo video offers first glimpse of gaming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Sep 2009 11:30:00 EST. After being the first major retailer to release <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/01/mysterious-playstation-3-slim-listing-appears-on-amazon-de/">info on the PS3 Slim</a> before Sony itself had announced the system, <a href="http://www.amazon.de/Xbox-360-Wireless-Controller-Motorsport/dp/B002MZZWRM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1251413998&amp;sr=8-4">Amazon Germany</a> is at it again, outing a 250GB Xbox 360 model for 280 euros ($379). An eagle-eyed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/27/xbox-360-with-250gb-hdd-and-forza-3-spotted-on-amazon-germany/">Engadget</a> tipster spotted the listing, which includes two wireless controllers and a copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/forza-motorsport-3"><em>Forza Motorsport 3</em></a> in addition to the <em>massively</em> <em>embiggened</em> hard drive.<br />
<br />
Since <em>Forza 3</em> won't be hitting shelves until October 23 in Europe, it stands to reason that this listing represents a deal still a few months off, though Microsoft could very feasibly release this new SKU (sans accessories) earlier. On the subject of new Xbox bundles, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg told us <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/27/interview-xboxs-aaron-greenberg-on-the-300-elite-and-all-thin/">in an interview yesterday</a> that, "I'm sure there will be different offers depending on where you go and what time of the year it is." Looks like we've found at least one bundle so far! We've contacted Microsoft for comment and will update this post when we know more.<br />

We jokingly throw the word "technophile" around when referring to our colleagues over at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/">Engadget</a> -- but their most recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/21/video-another-look-at-ps3-slim-and-its-removable-hdd/">video preview</a> of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps3-slim">PS3 Slim</a> gives us serious cause for concern. You'll need to watch it (posted after the break) to see what we mean. We're not really disturbed by the way former <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/ross-miller">Joystiq writer Ross Miller</a> pries the svelte console's HDD from its innards. No, it's the soft piano music playing in the background and general tenderness exhibited by the cameraman that give the whole production an unsettling, <em>Graduate</em>-esque feel.<br /><br />"Oh, hey, PS3 Slim. <em>Look at you</em>. You're looking mighty <span style="font-style: italic;">shapely</span> this evening. Why don't you turn around for me. Yeah, <em>real slow</em>. Let me feel those <em>buttons</em>. That's nice, that's nice. Would you like some wine? We've got a lovely decanter of Garrafeira, imported straight from ... no? Are you comfortable? Good. <em>Let's see that hard drive</em>."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/engadget-seduces-ps3-slim-removes-hard-drive/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Engadget seduces PS3 Slim, removes hard drive</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/engadget-seduces-ps3-slim-removes-hard-drive/">Engadget seduces PS3 Slim, removes hard drive</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 13:15:00 EST. As per the deluge of tips we received regarding an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/06/rumor-best-buys-80gb-ps3-to-be-bundled-with-mgs4-and-killzone/">80GB PlayStation 3 bundle</a> with <em>Killzone 2</em> and <em>Metal Gear Solid 4</em>, the <a href="http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9401417&amp;st=killzone+2&amp;lp=3&amp;type=product&amp;cp=1&amp;id=1218099072505">Best Buy website</a> is now reflecting the deal. The bundle retains the price of a regular ol' 80GB PS3 ($400), but will include both of the PS3 exclusive titles. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/rumor-ars-technica-mole-foretells-ps3-and-360-price-drop-in-fal/">Rumors surrounding the 80GB bundles</a> suggest it's an effort to make space for an upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps3-slim">PS3 Slim</a> on store shelves -- and considering the $90 worth of free games Sony is throwing at consumers, it's quite possible that shelf space will open for the next console iteration.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/07/killzone-2-metal-gear-solid-4-ps3-bundle-hitting-best-buy-now/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/07/mgs4-killzone-2-ps3-bundle-available-now/">MGS4 / Killzone 2 PS3 bundle available ... now!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Jul 2009 11:30:00 EST. Is the drum kit above (to the right) what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-5"><em>Guitar Hero 5</em></a> will be shipping with when it hits <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/27/guitar-hero-5-starts-the-party-on-september-1/">this September</a>? We're not 100% sure, but a trusted source at our sister site <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/06/guitar-hero-5s-drums-getting-a-rock-band-makeover/">Engadget</a> sent in the blurry shot, leading us to believe it could very well be. <br /><br />The new set bears a strong resemblance to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band"><em>that other</em> full band music/rhythm game</a> -- hey, there's even a lower bar support where the kick pedal could possibly hook on! Additionally, as Engadget rightly points out, the system controls have been moved in front of the pads. The back of the set allegedly features two kick pedal jacks and a "mysterious black mini jack" as well. We've asked for comment from Activision for confirmation of the set and have yet to hear back.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-v/">Guitar Hero 5</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-v/#2064300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/guitar-hero-5-full-band-with-lyrics--star-power_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-v/#2064301"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/guitar-hero-5-non-hud-shot_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-v/#2064302"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/guitar-hero-5-three-drums-one-guitar_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-v/#2064303"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/guitar-hero-5-two-drum-two-guitar--star-power_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-v/#2195733"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/8940_01_0026_20090629-4g4h1-8102009-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/06/rumor-guitar-hero-5-drum-set-to-look-an-awful-lot-like-rock-ban/">Rumor: Guitar Hero 5 drum set to look an awful lot like Rock Band's</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jul 2009 17:30:00 EST. A tipster at our sister site <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/20/giant-cowboys-stadium-led-wall-caught-playing-xbox-360-during-do/">Engadget</a> snapped this shot from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War 2</em></a>'s title screen, while waiting for a controller to be reconnected, on the <em>enormendous</em> 72 x 160-foot 'LED wall' at Dallas Cowboys Stadium late last week. It's reported that the stadium was being set up for the Jonas Brothers' June 20 concert, and the one piloting the system was none other than Steve '<a href="http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/profile.aspx?GamerTag=SoneAF1015">SoneAF1015</a>' Fatone, the group's video director. <br /><br />Even better, footage emerged on YouTube as well (seen after the break), showcasing the screen in action, though playing <em>Halo 3</em> as opposed to <em>Gears of War 2</em>. Other shots drop <em>presumably</em> Mr. Fatone (pronounce that as you will) playing <em>Call of Duty 2</em> and, erm, showing everyone his Gamercard, paltry Gamerscore in-tow. But alas, congrats to you, Mr. Fatone, you've likely just played the biggest game of <em>Halo 3</em> ever.<br />

Now a CTO at the company, Allard (along with a couple other folks) is credited on the patent for a motion-based controller from way back in November of ... <em>2007</em>. <br /><br />Given Microsoft's recent <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/07/microsoft-to-acquire-bigpark-working-on-xbox-360-exclusive/">purchase of Big Park</a> and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/ars-discusses-rumored-xbox-360-motion-sensor/">vast array</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/13/wsj-microsoft-prepping-xbox-360-motion-control-camera/">motion-sensing camera</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/venturebeat-microsoft-buying-3d-camera-company/">rumors</a>, we're betting this patent is old news. That being said, it would lend credence to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/09/rumor-microsoft-motion-controller-code-named-newton/">"Newton" rumors</a> from last year surrounding the company -- a rumor we lent credibility to at the time based on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/rumorbusters-bungie-is-leaving-microsoft/">reputable source</a>. All we can do now is hope that Microsoft isn't dead set on pulling a "Wii-too!"<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/18/j-allards-magic-wand-patent-application-for-microsoft-puts-ni/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/j-allards-magic-wand-patented-years-ago/">J Allard's 'magic wand' patented ... years ago</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 May 2009 19:00:00 EST. OK, OK, we're <em>still</em> unconvinced that there's anything to these slim PS3 rumors, even after we laid eyes on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/14/wild-and-slim-ps3-redesign-caught-on-camera/">these pics</a> of what was purportedly a thinner version of Sony's console. But, for what it's worth, you should know that a Chinese law firm has sent a cease-and-desist order to our sister site <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/18/slim-ps3-update-mysterious-chinese-firm-issues-a-cease-and-desi/">Engadget</a>, the text of which you can find after the break.<br /><br />What we're betting on is that this "PS3" is actually a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvXleDSkB-g">POPstation 3</a>, and the Chinese firm in question has been retained by SoFunCo, which would <em>really</em> prefer it if Sony didn't see their new pet project. Or, maybe it's the brand new slim PS3 and we're going to look like dummies. We'll know for sure after E3, but, spoiler alert, it's the first one.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/ps3-slim-plot-thickens-engadget-gets-cease-and-desist/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PS3 slim plot thickens: Engadget gets cease-and-desist</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/18/ps3-slim-plot-thickens-engadget-gets-cease-and-desist/">PS3 slim plot thickens: Engadget gets cease-and-desist</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 May 2009 19:30:00 EST. Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/02/rumor-motion-sensing-360-peripheral-spotted/">rumored motion-sensing peripheral</a> for the Xbox 360 may have actually been on display to the public under a different banner, <a href="http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/05/microsofts-big-surprise-at-e3.ars">Ars Technica</a> suggests. The meat of this speculation (tofu compact for vegans) is that the site actually saw the same technology at the Consumer Electronics Show last year, and Microsoft is allegedly <a href="http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/02/reports-microsoft-wants-israeli-startup-3dv-systems.ars">buying 3DV, the company responsible</a>.<br /><br />Back at CES 2008, 3DV apparently had a small web-cam that could detect movement and interaction, telling Ars at the time that it planned to release the item in the "sub-$100 area." Ars states that the technology was already "mature" at the time and was like having a "Microsoft Surface -- without the Surface." It's all still "rumor and speculation," but it seems Ars has found some missing puzzle pieces between the couch cushions.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/05/microsofts-motion-sensing-xbox-360-add-on-a-result-of-3dv-acqui/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/ars-discusses-rumored-xbox-360-motion-sensor/">Ars discusses rumored Xbox 360 motion sensor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 06 May 2009 09:30:00 EST. You know E3 is less than a month away when the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rumor">Joystiq rumor page</a> has near daily stories. Be that as it may, a tipster over at our sister site, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/01/xbox-360-to-get-motion-sensing-add-on-with-full-body-game-contro/">Engadget</a>, has spotted what seems to be a new peripheral for the Xbox 360. Though details are scant, the source notes that rather than holding a motion sensing peripheral of some sort, a camera, mic, and sensors will pick up "full body movement and sound." Here's the full bulleted list of features (again, according to the tipster):<br />
<ul>
    <li>Full body and hand gesture control of games / characters. </li>
    <li>In fighting games you kick, punch, duck, dive, jump and so forth with your body. </li>
    <li>It also picks up small hand gestures like pinching, grabbing and scrolling. </li>
    <li>There will also be video conferencing and games with video. </li>
    <li>Trivia game over the internet with live images of each person playing. When a question pops up, they can clap to buzz in. </li>
    <li>You can "move objects on your screen" and the other party can see what you're doing in real time. </li>
    <li>Sensor detects only the person playing, not folks observing on the couch. </li>
</ul>

Etsy user <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=2839">inhope</a> has crafted a work of art. While ex-Joystiqer Ross Miller and Engadget Editor-in-Chief Josh Topolsky are busy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/17/live-from-apples-iphone-os-3-0-preview-event/">liveblogging Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 preview event</a> in Cupertino, we're here (well, all over) disseminating various gaming-related information you <em>need</em> to know. For instance, Travis Boatman, Vice President of Worldwide Studios for EA, took the stage this morning to discuss the forthcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/sims"><em>Sims</em></a> iPhone game. <br /><br />Though details are scant, the liveblog is telling us that, "They're showing off a character buying some things in-game," and, "They're playing music off of the device in the game." We're wont to believe that second part means you're able to play music that's saved on your phone from within <em>The Sims</em> iPhone world. Apparently, claims that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/sxsw-2009-iphone-the-new-gaming-platform/">iPhone is "the new gaming platform"</a> aren't so far off after all, eh?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/17/sims-iphone-shows-off-in-game-purchasing-personalized-music/">Sims iPhone shows off in-game purchasing, personalized music</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Mar 2009 14:40:00 EST. This Monday, "<a href="http://www.latenightwithjimmyfallon.com/">Late Night with Jimmy Fallon</a>" begins and Conan O'Brien ascends the ranks of late nightdom into the much-vaunted "Tonight Show" position. Why is this exciting news for you, you ask? Because <a href="http://www.wowinsider.com/2009/01/22/felicia-day-teaches-jimmy-fallon-about-world-of-warcraft/">Fallon loves Felicia Day</a>! Wait, no, that's not it. It's because Fallon, like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/09/jimmy-fallon-and-engadget-raw-and-uncut/">Engadget's Josh Topolsky</a>, is a big fan of comically oversized iPhones. Wait, that's not it either.<br /><br />No friends, it's because, <a href="http://www.canada.com/Will+Late+Night+fans+fall+Fallon+writer+steps+into+Conan+Brien+shoes/1334877/story.html">speaking with Canada.com</a>, Fallon said, "We're going to treat a video game premiere as if it was a movie premiere. My generation grew up with the computer. We grew up with the Internet. We live in a video game type of world - video games are second nature to us. Games make more money, as an industry, than the film industry." He's certainly got a point. We'll be on the lookout for Mr. Fallon's promises on March 2nd, when his show premieres. And ya know, Jimmy, if you're ever looking for experts in the gaming field ... your friends at the 'Stiq are always available.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/fallon-promises-game-premieres-movie-premiere-status/">Fallon promises game premieres 'movie premiere' status</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 20:20:00 EST. Our brothers-in-arms over at Engadget are proudly hosting a charity auction for Ben Heck's one-of-a-kind PlayStation 3 laptop. If you're interested, you've got one week to scrummage up the coin for this Blu-ray equipped beast. 100% of the proceeds will go to the <a href="http://nationalcancercoalition.org/">National Cancer Coalition</a>, so you know it's a good cause. If you've got PS3 laptop-level income and PS3 laptop ambitions, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/18/ps3-laptop-charity-auction-bid-here/">stop over at Engadget</a> to place your bid. Good luck!<br /><br />[<strong>Update</strong>: <strike>Cancel that. Apparently some clever folks couldn't take <em>an auction for charity</em> seriously, so Engadget has temporarily postponed things. We'll let you know if and when it goes back up.</strike> It's back-up and hosted at <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;item=300217494195">eBay</a> now.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/18/ps3-laptop-charity-auction-bid-at-engadget/">PS3 Laptop charity auction, bid at Engadget</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Apr 2008 16:45:00 EST. In their latest poll, our good buddies over at <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/20/poll-what-blu-ray-player-will-you-be-picking-up/">EngadgetHD</a> beg the question: What Blu-ray player will you be picking up? With the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/16/its-really-over-folks-toshiba-drops-hd-dvd/">death of HD DVD</a> ending the format wars, there is only one choice left for high-def needs: Blu-ray. New buyers and HD DVD refugees alike need to make a choice; so what Blu-ray player did they choose? Why, the PS3 of course!<br /> <br />Even though polling is still going on, the PS3 is the clear winner at 56.6% of the total votes. The next closest Blu-ray player is the Panasonic DMP-BD50 at 8.3%; we suspect it's not likely that the DMP-BD50 will catch up to the PS3's massive 48% lead. What does this mean for the PS3? It means that sales can only go up from here.<br /><br />[Thanks Aaron!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/20/ps3-voted-most-wanted-blu-ray-player/">PS3 voted most wanted Blu-ray player</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Feb 2008 18:45:00 EST. Many uses come to mind when thinking of a curved, 2,880x900 resolution (16:5 aspect ratio) monitor - multitasking aside, we'd have quite a fun time opening every Photoshop panel simultaneously, or created the most complex, intricate <em>World of Warcraft </em>user interface imaginable. Alienware decided to show off its arcing display at CES with <em>Crysis</em>, the apparent benchmark for all technology of the future.<br /><br />Our friends at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/alienware-curved-display-rocks-crysis-at-2880-x-900/">Engadget</a> who are attending the show noticed three faint vertical lines, indicating the curved illusion is assisted by four sub-panels. The DLP display with LED illumination is due out the second half of this year for a currently-unknown price. Check out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/alienware-curved-display-rocks-crysis-at-2880-x-900/">their gallery</a> of the monitor; we also have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/video-alienwares-curved-display-caters-to-gamers/">video</a> of the display embedded after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/crazy-curved-alienware-monitor-perfect-for-crysis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Crazy curved Alienware monitor perfect for Crysis</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/10/crazy-curved-alienware-monitor-perfect-for-crysis/">Crazy curved Alienware monitor perfect for Crysis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Jan 2008 13:26:00 EST. Have you ever seen anything so ... boxed in your entire life? What wouldn't you give to see that hot little piece of rumbling plastic shed its outer layer to reveal the deliciousness within, like some sort of be-dual-sticked piece of electronic corn?<br /><br />... OK, so we can't claim to understand unboxing fetishists entirely, but we can at least try to make up for it by appealing to their basest desires. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/12/sony-dualshock-3-unboxing-ready-to-rumble/">Engadget Tokyo</a> has one of the first retail <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/DualShock3/">DualShock 3</a>s and they're taking the clamshell off ... slow.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/thill-as-the-dualshock-3-is-unboxed/">Thrill as the DualShock 3 is unboxed!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2007 10:33:00 EST. No, there's nothing particularly mysterious about them now, but those retro cans are the first consumer product by mod genius (and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/bloggers/benjamin-heckendorn">Engadget</a> contributor) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BenHeck/">Ben Heck</a>, hinted at through a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/26/ben-heckendorn-prepping-his-first-commercial-product/">veil of secrecy</a> in late April. The Audio FX Pro 5+1 Headset sports a USB connection, an integrated 5.1 surround sound decoder and force feedback tech that allows you to feel frequencies that are too low for humans to hear. So ... superpowers.<br /><br />It's coming in July, but you can pre-order it <a href="https://edimensional.com/product_info.php?cPath=22&amp;products_id=122">right here</a> for $80. The audio works with PS3 (just not the mic) but the 360 looks to be a no go. Now, Ben, just finish up your Wii Laptop that makes iced tea and hoverboards, and we'll see what we can do about that Nobel Prize.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/05/behold-ben-hecks-headphones-of-mystery/">Behold Ben Heck's headphones of mystery</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Jun 2007 19:33:00 EST. Let's take a glance at the honors:<br />

Yeah, that's right. That means the Wii pretty much wins at life. It's quite a series of awards, but which console will take home 2007? It may come down to one showdown: <em>Halo 3</em> vs. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ssbb"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a>. Which will suck up more of the average gamer's free time? Following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/benheck">Ben Heckendorn's</a> unveiling of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/engadget-unveils-ben-hecks-xbox-360-laptop-mk2/">Xbox 360 Laptop mk2</a>, you've had a couple of days to prepare your mind and body for the inevitable how-to series you knew would follow, so braid up your hair and gather 'round as Master Heckendorn <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/18/how-to-make-an-xbox-360-laptop-part-1/">teaches you</a> how to control your <strike>anger</strike> jealousy and build your very own Xbox 360 Laptop. Be warned: the process is fraught with peril and this guide (part one of three!) is comprised of nearly three dozen pictures and over 3000 "words." So grab your soldering iron and your power converters (available at Tosche Power Supply if you're plum out) and get reading.
