As a result, some orders have simply seen shipping delays, while others have seemingly failed to process at all or have been cancelled entirely. The number of non-existent packages sold is unknown.

"If your order(s) has been cancelled, we will be reaching out to you by email with additional information as soon as possible," an official update reads. Affected customers that feel proactive about resolving their issue can also contact Digital River directly by emailing namcobandai.en.cs@digitalriver.com, or by calling 952-392-2057.

It's also worth mentioning that while Digital River says it will be addressing the issues of everyone affected, the update does not go into detail about what that resolution may look like. To be on the safe side, we recommend tempering your expectations towards a refund and an apology.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
Ni no Kuni Wizard's Edition oversold, some orders being canceled originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Jan 2013 16:30:00 EST. Reader Matt did, and it was a bummer. Games were freezing at load, leaving him with a confusing error code and no Mario.

Nintendo support told him that this code results when you try to load a game from an external hard drive that isn't powered. Nintendo has warned that only hard drives plugged into the wall or into two USB ports with a Y cable will be supported, and now we see the problem.

The short-term solution is simpler than getting a new hard drive or cable, though. Just go into your system settings and transfer the game's data to your system when playing. "This process takes approximately 2 minutes to complete," Matt tells us. It's another annoying user experience hiccup - why not just tell users "hey, go plug in your hard drive?" - but at least it's easily dealt with.
How to live through Wii U error code 150-1093 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Nov 2012 13:40:00 EST. Only Xbox 360 shipments appear to have been affected by the issue, and even then not all 360 shipments were part of the faulty batch, so there's still a chance you'll be able to go out and buy an actual copy today.

We've reached out to Warner Bros. for comment and will update with any further information we receive on the situation.

Update: Warner Bros. issued a statement to IGN saying it's recalling a "small number" of discs which, while labelled as demo discs, do in fact contain the retail game.

The statement reads:

"Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is recalling a small number of LEGO The Lord of the Rings video games that were released for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft to Walmart, Target and Toys 'R' Us in the United States with a disc labeling error. The discs in question are incorrectly labeled as demo discs, but those discs do contain the full game content and are fully functional. This error does not affect any other formats of the game. We are in the process of remanufacturing the discs and will get them to the stores as soon as possible. Consumers who purchased a copy of the Xbox 360 version of the game with the disc labeling error can contact customer support via email at support@wbgames.com or phone at 410-568-3680 for a replacement disc."

Lego Lord of the Rings for 360 recalled due to packaging error [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Nov 2012 20:00:00 EST. Some have started a shared Google document to chronicle every error, and have so far added more than 80 infringements, arranged by "Lore," "Timeline," "Characters" and "Oddities," complete with clarifying descriptions.

Some of the most egregious errors include Nick and Gillian aging six years in the three years since Ascension, two volus wearing clothes that would cause their immediate deaths, and [spoiler] "Anderson thinking that the Citadel trap had been sprung 'so successfully' they were still reparing damage -- The entire point of the first game was that you prevented that particular Reaper plan from succeeding."

There are plenty more on the list, which is available for public editing. The author of Mass Effect: Deception, William C. Dietz, is a video-game-novel veteran, having written Halo, Hitman and Resistance novels. He is not, however, the writer of the previous three Mass Effect novels (Drew Karpyshyn), nor is he J.K. Rowling, thus forbidding him this handy excuse whenever canonical inconsistencies spring up: "It's magic."
Fans find shiploads of errors in latest Mass Effect novel originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 01:00:00 EST. Two issues have come up with the new 3DS -- one kind of serious, and one kind of not. NeoGAF users and a GoNintendo post, among others, document a periodic error screen that appears during gameplay, which requires the system to be shut off and turned back on in order to get back to playing. It seems to be most commonly associated with Super Monkey Ball 3D and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars.

Nintendo of Europe issued a statement to Eurogamer suggesting that this issue could be fixed by downloading the latest firmware. If that doesn't fix the issue, the company recommends users "contact their local Nintendo Customer Service centre to investigate the problem further."

Some users are also reporting an excessively loose hinge, causing the top half of the system to wobble during play. "The hinge i thought was OK," reports 3DSBuzz forum user Suspiria, "but throughout the day it has got worse and worse." Nintendo acknowledges the possibility of such an issue on its support site, advising those who suffer from it to send the system in for repairs. We're contacting Nintendo about both issues, and will let you know what shakes out. Hopefully, it's not the top of a 3DS.

[Thanks, Don]

Update: Nintendo sent Joystiq a statement asserting that "The number of calls and emails received by our customer support center is well below the rate experienced during past hardware launches, and there are no widespread issues." Find the full statement after the break.
Continue reading Users report 3DS crashes, loose hinges

Users report 3DS crashes, loose hinges originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. Much like its predecessor, LittleBigPlanet 2 is experiencing some technical difficulties during its first few days in the would-be capable hands of its creative community. Some players have reported that when they attempt to connect with other players online, they hit what's being colloquially referred to as the "Infinite Loading" glitch, which freezes the game on a neverending loading screen. (And that, as you might imagine, is kind of a bummer.)

The exact cause of the issue is unknown, though there's a quick and dirty workaround (which worked for us, when we experienced the glitch): If you get stuck on the loading screen, turn your controller off, and the level should actually load. Once you're in the level, you can turn your controller back on and get back to whatever it was you had set out to do -- probably slapping around your fellow players and being generally unhelpful, you jerk.
Earlier today, our tips inbox and the official Assassin's Creed 2 forum were set ablaze by incensed owners of the PC version of the aforementioned Italian revenge epic. According to numerous reports from prospective players of the game, Ubisoft's DRM authentification servers have crashed, forcing some players to suffer lengthy login periods when booting up Assassin's Creed 2, and locking some folks out of the game entirely.

A Ubisoft representative responded to a particularly rage-filled forum thread, stating "clearly the extended downtime and lengthy login issues are unacceptable, particularly as I've been told these servers are constantly monitored." The representative added "I'll do what I can to get more information on what the issue is here first thing tomorrow and push for a resolution and assurance this won't happen in the future." We've got a really great suggestion for how to make such an assurance: Find a less abominable DRM policy.

We've apparently made it through the worst of the storm, friends. We've received a number of tips informing us that the internal clock bug that was affecting non-Slim PS3s for the past 24 hours has been fixed, rendering all games playable once more. We tempted fate shortly after receiving these reports by testing out a few of our PS3 Phat units and can confirm that they're running games just fine. Additionally, our "lost" Trophies appear to be properly re-synced to our PSN accounts.

The extent of the damage incurred during the bug-out is unknown, but will likely surface in the next few hours. No Joystiq staffers lost any of their hard-earned Trophy data, but we're an awfully small sample group for a problem that affected every living being on Earth.

Update: PlayStation Blog confirms that PSN service has been restored and all PS3 systems should be operating normally.
The statement puts a loose timeframe on a fix for the issues, saying, "we hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours."

Additionally, the PlayStation Blog post includes a word of warning to PS3 Phat owners: "if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained Trophies, and not being able to restore certain data." (Read Sony's full statement after the break.)
We know you're curious to see what the console apocalypse looks like, but trust us -- it's just not worth it. We'll let you know when it's safe to turn your system back on.
A wide rash of game-crashing errors is spreading among the PS3-owning community at the moment, most of which can be chalked up to a 8001050F error code. This has led to a variety of unfortunate side-effects for those affected, including corrupted Trophy information and an inability to access the PSN. When combined, those two issues prevent players from launching certain games, such as Heavy Rain, without being kicked back to the XMB.

We've contacted Sony to find out what's causing the issue, and when we can expect to get back to chasing down the Origami Killer. He might just be able to make a clean getaway while we suffer through this downtime.

Update: Sony has acknowledged the issue, and is "looking into it." We've yet to hear an official word on what the problem is, though it seems to be a bit larger than just the PSN. Owners of PS3 Phats are reporting that the date on their console has reverted to 12/31/1999, which is likely the cause of the data-corrupting errors. Some Phat-owners have reported receiving the errors while their console was offline, which is upsetting, to say the least. We'll let you know when we hear official word from Sony.

Update 2: It's been 11 hours since our last update from Sony, and Phat PS3s worldwide are still unable to play Trophy-supported games. The issue is almost certainly non-PSN related, and appears to be a firmware issue caused by the screwy time and date settings. The issue is also affecting debug consoles, which Develop reports is preventing PS3 game developers from working on their projects. We'll keep pushing Sony on this issue. Happy New Year, everyone!

Update 3: Sony has responded to the internal clock error, and is advising PS3 Phat owners to leave them turned off until the issue can be fixed -- hopefully within the next 24 hours. Read here for more info.
Yesterday morning, PlayStation 3 owners discovered access to Hulu was no longer functioning through the console's Internet browser. According to Engadget, PS3 users of the video content provider were treated with an apologetic error message, citing the desired content was not available on their "platform" of choice. Engadget is quick to point out that, while Hulu's recent Terms of Service changes make no mention of the console, changing an Internet browser's user-string to match the console reveals it is specifically being targeted. Conspiracy theories? Throw them in the comments below while we try to clear up this cloudy situation.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in. The trader only meant to place an order for $306k.

The incident did raise some concerns about Japan's "lax approach to systems and compliance," especially since UBS was recently involved in two of the country's most famous trading blunders. Come on, regulatory guys. We're sure the trader could've just loaded a previous save file if things actually went bad. That's the way things work, no?

[Via Capcom Unity]

You won't be able to compare Trophies with friends, with a frustrating error message (80022D27) popping up at every attempt.

Considering the large number of complaints on the PlayStation Forums, it looks as though this is a widespread Network-wide outage. Continuing in a tradition set forth by Bully, Rockstar's latest Grand Theft Auto IV PC patch may itself be in need of a patch. According to BigDownload, the update has created issues for some gamers' controllers, both Xbox 360 Windows controller and keyboard/mouse combination. For those already experiencing some major issues, it's probably worth downloading now. For everyone else, we suggest waiting until the next patch arrives. Maybe.
Grand Theft Auto IV PC patch needs a patch originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 14:28:00 EST. A listing for a PSP version of MotorStorm on UK retailer GAME's website was a mistake, reports VideoGamer. Today's Best Buy flyer has overridden the ESRB and given Final Fantasy IV, Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 and MYST all "Mature" ratings. We have no idea how this happened, as the box images from the publishers should have the proper ratings. It's not like Best Buy's flyer design team adds the ratings to each box (and if they do, we feel bad for them). In the online version of the ad, hovering over the games with the pointer does display the proper ratings.

We're amused, but just to be clear, Trauma Center is rated T for Teen, while Myst and FF IV are rated E for everyone.

[Thanks MGS0LID]
Best Buy ad rerates DS games as mature originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 Jul 2008 11:43:00 EST. Nintendo has spoken to Eurogamer in regards to everyone getting worried about Mario Kart Wii DVD discs not playing and Nintendo is, frankly, wondering what the whole deal is. They've apparently gotten no such reports themselves, stating that their game is everything they hoped it would be.

The big difference between Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros. Brawl, the other game that has been a thorn in the sides of some folk, is that MK does not come on a dual-layered DVD like Brawl, so that isn't the situation. And, until we get a disc in our own Wii, we're just going to take all of this with a healthy supply of salt.

See also: Glitching with ghosts in Mario Kart Wii

Nintendo: No issues with Mario Kart Wii that we know of originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. Which in industry speak simply means "wait and see."

GI.biz's follow up with Imagination's publisher, Alten8, reveals the game is in its "early stages" and wasn't blocked by Nintendo. A spokesperson for the Anti-Defamation League even said the group welcomed the use of new technology to educate. It's somewhat less interactive, unfortunately, than the iconic towel maneuver.

According to Mielke, if you listen to the Wii's disc drive and make sure it stops spinning before "spamming the A button," the game will more often than not load correctly. You have to put the disc in, then wait, then press A on the Disc Channel, and wait for the noise to die down again. This makes it sound like the issue is that the dual-layered disc takes longer to read than most discs, and the system accidentally allows you to stop the reading when you press A and start the game.

Soon after the Japanese release of the game, a company called A-Class released a series of Wii lens cleaners specifically marketed at Brawl owners. We're sure we'll see something similar over here, and we have no idea if it will work.
Brawl disc problems: patience to the rescue? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Mar 2008 13:30:00 EST. Bringing an old story back to the forefront with a new angle, BBC show Watchdog reports that Michelle Livesey of Manchester can't get Brain Training (Brain Age in the States) to recognize her saying "yellow" -- she's apparently not saying it "posh" enough. Although Watchdog added a new dimension with Brain Training's inability to recognize yellow, the original problem color blue is also in the mix. The issue is all in the accents.

According to Nintendo, on page 47 of the Brain Training manual it gives hints on how to use the voice recognition properly. Suggestion number four is: "Pronounce each word as clearly as possible, and try to avoid using strong dialects or accents." Just check out Nicole Kidman saying scissors in a Nintendo ad to see how things could go wrong with accents. Nintendo claims it has been continually monitoring the voice recognition efficiency in its software since the game launched in June '06. We believe them, just as long as we don't have to say the color blue, or yellow if we're from Manchester.
Continue reading News recycling: Brain Age doesn't like your accent

News recycling: Brain Age doesn't like your accent originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 14:25:00 EST. Looks like that's finally been fixed in firmware 3.90. Many users are reporting on the PlayStation forums that their once defunct systems can now play with the rest of 'em. Games like Beats and Syphon Filter: Combat Ops eagerly await those systems.

Supposedly, the fix only affects PSP-2000 systems, but it's clear that each firmware update Sony releases fixes a few more issues that users are experiencing. Hopefully, PSP Fanboy readers afflicted with this mysterious glitch have found their woes alleviated.

[Thanks, Hashbrown_Hunter!]
Firmware 3.90 fixes mysterious Store errors originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Jan 2008 00:45:00 EST. A number of people are having trouble using the PSP Store. A thread on the PlayStation Forums shows the growing frustrations of those that have met error 80048516. They rightfully purchased content from the Store, and simply cannot transfer the data over to their systems. Some users complain they've purchased over $30 worth of content that they're no longer able to access.

Calls to PlayStation support lines have left the users frustrated at the seeming lack of a solution. Constant days of "research" on their part seems to suggest only one solution: returning the system for a new one. We haven't encountered issues with the Store on our end, but we also don't manage more than one license at a time per system. A word of warning: don't deactive your PSP systems unless you really mean it! And don't try having multiple licenses (from different territories, for example) on your system.

We wish the best of luck to those affected, and hope to have an update regarding their situation in the near future.

[Thanks, Hashbrown_Hunter!]
Users plagued with mysterious PSP Store errors originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 09 Jan 2008 18:00:00 EST. A little lesbianism goes a long way as the New York Times names Mass Effect its game of the year for 2007. The NYT bestowed Mass Effect with the honor for its "focus on character development, personal growth and moral tension, all fueled by a graphics system created to evoke emotional empathy." Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction was honored for being the shining star on the PS3 and BioShock was named the "best newcomer." There's also digs at Halo 3 and Super Mario Galaxy for being "unambitious representations of the state of the art."

Speaking of unambitious, for the second time in less than a month the New York Times copyeditors took a nap (albeit a minor one) on a video game-related story, which is slowly becoming inappropriate in covering an $18 billion-plus industry. There's no telling when reporter Seth Schiesel submitted his copy for this piece, but E3 2008 was already confirmed for the Los Angeles Convention Center last Tuesday, so the article's suggestion that "the solution for [E3] next year can be summed up in one word (or is that two?): Las Vegas" is just about 1,000 New York minutes behind the times.
NYTimes names Mass Effect game of the year originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 23 Dec 2007 18:25:00 EST. Talk about all the news that's fit to copyedit. The New York Times has a hat-trick of errors in a recent technology piece discussing video game options. They manage to make it through the Wii spot on -- but then the real fun comes.

First the Old Gray Lady says Gran Turismo 5 is "a hyper-realistic, high-speed journey, [and] is one of the best sellers for [the] Sony console." One little problem, the game isn't out yet. Next up they say the PlayStation 3 is $299, which would be awesome and perhaps the Times has some incredibly privileged info about Sony's holiday strategy, but we're pretty sure the system is going to be starting at $399 for a while. Oh, but they're not done yet. Did you realize the PS3 and Xbox 360 are both powered by the Cell processor? This is being reported by the venerable New York-freakin'-Times, so it must be true, right?

[Thanks, Murph]
NYTimes: PS3 is $299, GT5 'best seller,' and Xbox uses Cell chip originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 30 Nov 2007 18:45:00 EST. Imagine our absolute panic and horror this morning when we checked the news wires to discover that E3 -- yes, the E3 -- was going on this week! No flights scheduled, no hotels booked and we didn't even send Ludwig to the doctor for his dry-wit injection this week -- wait, we didn't even get our invitations to the event! Thankfully, after reading through the first couple paragraphs we discovered that there was just some horrible computer error and there actually is no E3 this week ... we think. They could be hiding it.

In related news, IDG World Expo, the organizers of the E for All event, say that 18,000 attended the inaugural show. In essence, the games were broken. People will have their purchase refunded to them in the next seven days.

There's still no word yet on whether Crash Bandicoot 2 will also have a refund following its removal from the PlayStation store. It's not like XBLA has been immune to bug issues, most notable were the Mad Tracks "stuck in demo" bug and Contra's out-of-sync co-op. If you have a question for the team, send an e-mail to andrew @ pspfanboy.com with the subject "Ask PSP Fanboy."

Q: Is downgrading to 1.5 and upgrading to the latest Sony update later harmful to the PSP?
A: Downgrading hasn't proven to be too "dangerous" on the PSP. However, you always run a chance of bricking your system whenever you overwrite its precious flash memory. If you're currently running an official PSP firmware at the moment, you can simply update by using "Network Update" or by accessing Sony's official website. However, if you're using OE firmware, you should downgrade first. There are reports that upgrading to the latest firmware from an OE edition will brick your system.

Continue reading Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 7

Ask PSP Fanboy: Volume 7 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Feb 2007 11:00:00 EST. Still, no batch of hardware is without defect, and scattered reports from around the country bring several issues into the harsh light of reality.

The first issue, and perhaps most prevalent, is a recent WiiConnect24 update causing recurrent error codes for any and all online functionality. It only happens to a few, causing error codes 110213 and 32002 (how many errors can this thing have?). The solution? If you don't mind losing saved data (and most importantly, Virtual Console games, which are tied to a specific system), you can contact Nintendo and they'll send you a new unit within 3 to 4 business days. The other is a bit trickier; you'll have to contact Nintendo and have them send you a shipping label, with which you may send your Wii off to repair-land. This option will take at least two weeks, so it's best avoided.

Another problem seems to stem not from the Wii, but from the power supply and adapter. If you have a voltmeter handy (and you should!) you can check if the adapter if properly outputting power. If you believe this is the problem, there's a handy fix-it-yourself solution: while the Gamecube power supply doesn't quite fit into the Wii, you can make it fit. Here's some advice from reader Jay:

"I took a knife and bent out the plastic sides in order to get it to fit into the Wii. Make sure to put positive w/ positive and negative w/ negative, which is listed on the the back of the brick. But, if you're lazy, the flat (read: not round/circular) side goes in to side which has like and angled cut off piece. Well lo and behold, the red standby light turned on and the Wii worked! [By the way], the modded adapter sill works in the Gamecube, but you may have to tape it in to make sure it doesn't fall out."

Rock on, Jay. Are you guys having any other problems, and if so, do you have some possible solutions?

[Image courtesy of smashmywii.com, which, by the way, has their official video available for download.]

[Oh, and thanks Jay!]
Wii problems and solutions originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Nov 2006 13:58:00 EST.
