Injustice joins EVO 2013's lineup, DLC coming to Wii U this summer

Evolution Championship Series co-founder Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar announced that NetherRealm Studios' DC superhero brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us is now a featured game in EVO 2013's official tournament lineup, joining big-name favorites like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition.

More good news arrived for Injustice fans today, in the form of a release window for the Wii U version's downloadable content. Responding to fan questions, the game's official Twitter account revealed that Wii U users will see its first round of DLC for the superhero and villain brawler this summer.

Wii U players were previously left out in the cold as Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners tussled with newcomer Lobo earlier this week. NetherRealm did not detail if the Wii U plans include additional costumes currently exclusive to Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Injustice.

Batgirl is next up in NetherRealm's DLC release schedule. Two more as-of-yet unannounced characters will join Injustice's roster at a later date.

Get hype: EVO 2012 results and Grand Finals videos

Another EVO Championship Series has come and gone, taking with it the hopes, dreams and aspirations of a community. EVO is the Super Bowl of fighting games, but also a cultural mecca for those who share the genre as their life's passion.

This year's proceedings were punctuated by surprises, upsets and incredible displays of skill and technical prowess, perhaps more so than any EVO in recent memory. Last year's Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition champion, Fuudo, tied with three others for ninth place at this year's tournament, for instance. Conversely, Perfect Legend successfully defended his throne as Mortal Kombat champion, becoming the first person to retain their title since Daigo Umehara's SSF4 victory in 2010.

MadCatz producing limited edition EVO fightsticks

To commemorate this year's EVO Championship Series World Finals, arcade stick darling Mad Catz has created a limited edition "EVO Championship Series Arcade Fightstick Pro" for the PS3 and 360.

Now, when we say limited edition, we mean exceedingly limited edition: Mad Catz is only manufacturing 600 of these arcade sticks in total - 300 for each system. While the parts used in the stick are not explicitly broken down, the fact that it's part of the manufacturer's Fightstick Pro line implies heavy usage of Sanwa Denshi buttons and sticks.

For all intents and purposes, the limited edition joint appears to be a translucent purple version of Mad Catz's Street Fighter X Tekken stick, and at $159.99 it costs about the same as well. Pre-orders are now active at Mad Catz's GameShark shop.

Street Fighter's Seth Killian is now lead game designer at Sony Santa Monica

Seth Killian, former Capcom strategic marketing director of online and community, has taken the role at Sony Santa Monica as lead game designer, working on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and with other outside studios.

Killian is best known for his work in the fighting game community - he co-founded the EVO championships and handled Capcom's fighting games during his six-year employment - and he says that experience will help him at Sony Santa Monica.

"Fighting games are very close to my heart, and as someone that's spent much of my life with traditional fighters, All-Stars has been a great opportunity to take a step back and rethink fighting fundamentals from the ground up," Killian writes on the PlayStation Blog. "All-Stars is also a total love-letter to Sony fans. From the characters, to their special moves, to the incredible level 3 supers, and the stages themselves, I'm not sure there's ever been such a giant dose of fan-service in Sony history."

Did we mention Killian used to be in PR? He will be working with third-party studios such as Fun Bits Interactive, Queasy Games, thatgamecompany, Giant Sparrow, and of course All-Stars' SuperBot Entertainment. Killian will be bringing All-Stars to EVO this weekend, as part of PlayStation's first official presence at the tournament.

Crashing EVO: SpyParty's Chris Hecker on depth and fighting games

When we asked Chris Hecker how SpyParty snuck its way into EVO 2012, we didn't think he'd actually tell us - revealing sensitive information is opposed to an entire half of his game's title, after all. We assume it was the other half that allowed him to divulge the details behind how SpyParty, a one-on-one asymmetric Turing Test, snagged a featured spot at the year's largest fighting-game gathering:

"It all started with Seth Killian," Hecker said. "Seth and I have talked about my goals for SpyParty to be a game that can eventually be counted among the most intensely competitive player-skill games we have, games like Counter-Strike, Starcraft, LoL, Dota and Street Fighter, and he's been really supportive of that goal.

"Seth emailed me and asked if I'd be interested in bringing SpyParty to EVO. I knew a bit about EVO and was kind of blown away by the offer."

SpyParty is one of EVO 2012's Indie Showcase titles, and will be available for anyone to try out on the expo floor, which is completely free and open to the public July 6-7 at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace.

The game itself is based on subtlety, precision and practice, much like many fighting games, but it doesn't involve any twitch movements, bright, flashing colors or hadoukens - and it comes with a four-page manual that must be read before anyone attempts to play it. In terms of pacing for the American audience: if Mortal Kombat is football, SpyParty is soccer.

It's not your Datel controller, it's your Xbox 360

Having problems using your Datel controller with your Xbox 360 all of a sudden? Well, you can blame yesterday's stealthy system update, which has wreaked havoc with some wireless controllers - specifically, the TurboFire 2, WildFire 2, EVO line and the Super Sports 3X steering wheel peripheral.

Right now, there is a fix, but it's complicated. You'll have to download a software update made specifically for your hardware, which you can find here. Microsoft doesn't officially support your Datel controller, after all - and it's not like the two are best pals.

Here's what you'll be fighting over at Evo 2012

The organizers of the Evo fighting game tournament series have revealed this year's lineup of games, allowing you to start practicing now! Ideally, you'd have been playing a bunch of fighters already, but now you have a better idea of which ones you should be obsessively replaying. The roster includes Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Ver. 2012, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Soulcalibur 5, King of Fighters 13, and Mortal Kombat. Admittedly, you'll have a harder time getting practice in on a couple of those right now.

The locations and dates for this year's events were also announced, with tournaments scheduled for all over the world. Shoryuken has the full list of locations for fightstick-toting pilgrims. This year, there are more tournaments, "which means more chances to earn seeding points." In addition, you can earn those points from any of those games, making it easier to move on if you're not a Street Fighter or MvC3 player.

Punchageddon: EVO 2012 comes back to Vegas July 6-8, 2012

It only makes sense there'd be another EVO, right? Last year's tournament was watched by over two million people online, and 2012's main event tournament is looking to blow it up even bigger. EVO 2012 has been scheduled for July 6 through 8, and will once again take place at Caesar's Palace Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

No participating games have been revealed, though Street Fighter X Tekken and Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition Ver. 2012 are likely candidates.

Over 2 million watched EVO 2011 tourney online

Judging by readers' warm reception of the EVO 2011 Championship Series livestream we published during the event last weekend, the number of pro fighting game spectators is rapidly expanding. According to a press release distributed by the event's organizers, a record-breaking two million-plus viewers tuned into the different brawls therein over the weekend.

Perhaps more impressive is how these two million souls took to Twitter with their enthusiasm for the participants, making the names of top-tier fighters four out of ten worldwide trending topics on the social networking platform. This might be the tournament's most impressive feat of all: For one evening, EVO 2011 managed to confuse the living hell out of everyone else on Twitter.

Ryu will have his hadouken in Tekken X Street Fighter

"Obviously, the Street Fighter characters will have to have their fireballs. Ryu without a fireball just wouldn't be ... right," Tekken game director Katsuhiro Harada told PlayStation Blog at EVO 2011 last weekend. "Obviously we'll need it."

While Tekken X Street Fighter development is still in the earliest stages, the confirmation that characters will still be able to toss projectiles is curious. The only thing we've seen of the game so far has been a render of Ryu (above).

Harada doesn't know exactly how projectiles will make their way into the game yet, but it doesn't stop him from hypothesizing on how fireballs will be implemented. Additionally, he provides some details on a handful of the other upcoming Tekken games, including character list talk for Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue and an "85%" confirmation of stereoscopic 3D in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 -- all of which you can read about in the full interview through that Source link below!

Eight-year-old Noah brings the pain to pro players at EVO 2011

When we were 8, we spent our time playing Street Fighter with friends, for fun, or for Pogs if we were feeling feisty. Eight-year-old Noah spends his time viciously defeating grown men in professional Marvel vs Capcom 3 tournaments, as shown in the above EVO 2011 video. This year, Noah made it into the top 48 playing Hulk, Sentinel and Wesker, before being knocked out by a much taller and broader player, Chris G. That bully.

King of Fighters XIII playable at EVO2011 and Otakon

While it won't be one of the tournament's 5 official fighting games, the console version of King of Fighters XIII will so-totally be playable at this year's EVO2011 Championship Series. Attendees will have the opportunity to test-drive Atlus' 2D hold-out, as well as take part in a Q&A panel with one of the game's producers.

For anime aficionados whose interest in King of Fighters may be more artistic than adversarial, this year's Otakon will also play host to a sneak preview of the title, although no Q&A panel has been announced for the convention. According to its press release, Atlus has "committed to offer support to KOF XIII tournaments taking place at both EVO and Otakon," however no official tournaments have been announced for either event as of yet.

Evo fighting game tournament announces 2011 season

The Evo fighting game championship will be a little different this year. You'll still lose at Super Street Fighter IV a bunch of times if you compete -- so it won't be that different. But the organizers have partnered with fighting game tournaments in the US and elsewhere to create a series of Evo ranking events. There are also online tournaments (the Xbox Live one has passed) for people who can't reach the event locations, including a PSN tournament on Saturday, January 22.

All of these small-time tourneys will lead up to the main event, the Evolution World Finals, at the Rio Casino in Vegas, from July 29 through July 31.

Daigo Umehara wins at EVO 2010; EVO Japan announced

With "over 3,000 player signups," this year's Evolution Championship Series had the largest turnout in the tourney's history -- perhaps unsurprising given the recent resurgence in the popularity of fighting games. What's even less surprising? Daigo "The Beast" Umehara took the number one spot in Super Street Fighter IV, once again trouncing his competition. Meanwhile, Justin Wong headed up the Marvel vs Capcom 2 ladder and Yoichiro "Garu" Aruga topped the Melty Blood boards.

Alongside the ballyhoo and smack talkery of EVO 2010's proceedings came the announcement of the first-ever EVO Japan, set for September 11 and 12 (just before the Tokyo Game Show). According to Versus City, the event will take place "somewhere in the Tokyo/Kawasaki area" and is being put together by the EVO staff with the folks from Godsgarden. We've listed all of the winners after the break, alongside a video of the dramatic final SSFIV round.

Want to see insane fighting game skills on display? The annual EVO fighting game tournament promises to be full of amazing comebacks, seemingly endless combos and furious Hadoken duels -- and you'll be able to watch it both online and on TV. Capcom announced that G4 will stream coverage of the event on its website through the whole July 9-11 tournament, and will also run a special EVO edition of X-play on July 20. If they have any sense, Pringles will be sponsoring the broadcast.

Justin Wong wins national SFIV tourney, Daigo remains world champ

We have to hand it to Justin Wong -- he put up a good fight. Defeating all American contestants in a three-round, GameStop-sponsored Street Fighter IV tournament over the course of the past two months, the NY-based Street Fighter enthusiast can walk tall knowing he took down the best of what America had to offer. What we didn't know when this tournament was announced, however, was that a brief "international title championship" would take place immediately following the battle's end.

After toppling Korea's Poongko, as well as Japan's Iyo, Wong (playing as Rufus) was left to compete with Japan's other entry, Daigo. Daigo apparently swept Wong using Ryu four to zero. Though Wong may not have walked away with the title of "international champion," he did likely need a truck for the Street Fighter IV arcade machine he won and, ya know, that enormous trophy he's holding.

San Fran's SFIV championships to host food drive

It appears Capcom is getting used to tapping the veins of semi-altruistic gamers. Its latest idea: "Street Fighter Fights Hunger." In conjunction with GameStop, the publisher will hold a food drive at the EVO Street Fighter IV US National Championship Finals, to be held at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco on April 18 at 7 pm PT.

Food items will be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank and donations should be made in the form of canned goods or "nominal donations." Oh, you want to know what'll actually go down at this public event beyond the charitable stuff? Check out the details after the break.

Ignition reveals date, details for King of Fighters XII tournament

Ready to compete in a game you've never played? Ignition Entertainment has officially announced the King of Fighters XII tournament teased last week on the game's website.

The tournament, being held in cooperation with the EVO tournament group, will take place at Element in Hollywood on May 30th, during which 128 freakishly talented competitors will pit their stylish, high-resolution avatars against one another in a five-round tournament. If you think you're the king of King of Fighters, you can sign up at EVO's site starting April 6 at 10AM PST. Signing up at Ignition's KOF site could win you a trip to watch the event.

The press release teases "special guests and the opportunity to win one-of-a-kind KOF goods" -- not the least of which is a Japanese King of Fighters XII cabinet.

We love art of all kinds, and we're glad to report that Gallery Nucleus and I am 8-bit are teaming up to present a Street Fighter art exhibition in Alhambra, California from April 25 - May 11. There you'll be able to check out some contributions from Udon, the wonderful folks behind SSFIITHDR, and enjoy some of the festivities going down outside of looking at art. These activities include:

A new Street Fighter IV national tournament appears!

Are you 'that guy' at the arcade? The guy calmly defeating challenger after challenger on the gray market Street Fighter IV cabinet, milking your dollar bill for all it's worth? You know, the guy stealing all our money? Well how would you feel if we told you that Capcom is partnering up with GameStop and the EVO Championship Series to bring you the very first Street Fighter IV National Tournament? Your head would explode?! Uh oh, maybe we should have kept this to ourselves...

Anyway, starting on February 21st at "locations EVERYWHERE" (warning: PDF link), GameStop will hold the first of three rounds determining the best of the best SFIV players in the country. Following that, the second round will take place on February 28th at "regional stores" and second-round victors will move on to the semi-finals on March 14th. Finally, the 16 winners of the semi-finals will be flown to San Francisco for the final competition, where they'll all receive the upcoming SFIV Mad Catz arcade sticks and fighting pads, limited edition tournament belts and a place in the semi-final bracket at the EVO World Finals in Las Vegas. But what, pray tell, does the winner of the final round get? How about an official Street Fighter IV arcade cabinet? If you haven't already burst out the door and run to a GameStop to sign up, you may want to do so posthaste.

EVO 2009 Championship Series coming to Las Vegas in July

Fighting game fanatics, wonderful news comes courtesy of our good friends at Capcom: EVO 2009 is on! For those of you who aren't in the know, EVO is a huge fighting game tournament open to gamers from around the world. It's also an awesome search term on YouTube. This year's tournament will go down in Las Vegas from July 17 to July 19 and will feature a variety of Capcom games, as well as some other notable fighters like Soulcalibur IV and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core. The Capcom games to be featured include:

Street Fighter IV
Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (single and teams)
Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
Street Fighter III: Third Strike (2 vs 2 teams)
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom

Sounds like quite the tournament, and we're very glad to see Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom getting some love. We're still holding out hope that it'll get localized some day, as unrealistic as that may be.
