Joule is expected to be a heart-rate monitor, allowing wireless monitoring to keep exercise "within a target goal for weight loss, strength, or cross-fitness workouts."<br /><br />Joule and <em>Kinect Play Fit</em> are compatible, but are two separate products. There is no expected launch window, but Verge sources also claim a future dashboard update will introduce the system. We're checking with Microsoft if it has any comment, but most of this (if true) will likely be revealed at E3 in a month.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/report-kinect-play-fit-and-joule-are-kinect-ercise-tools/">Report: 'Kinect Play Fit' and 'Joule' are Kinect-ercise tools</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 12:30:00 EST. Nintendo announced this morning that a Maryland judge has summarily dismissed the case, which alleged that Nintendo's Wii Fit games and Balance Board accessory (among pretty much every other Nintendo peripheral) violated patents owned by IA Labs for exergaming devices.<br /><br />IA Labs' last announced gaming product was the "<a href="http://www.ia-labs.com/ViewVideoGameMarket.aspx?ID=7">XR Station,</a>" a controller attached to a big lever, that players must exert pressure on -- push, pull, lean -- to operate. It also showed the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/wii-sqweeze-is-like-a-thighmaster-for-your-hands/">Sqweeze</a>" in 2008: a Wiimote peripheral with two rubber grips to squeeze.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/wii-fit-patent-lawsuit-dismissed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii Fit patent lawsuit dismissed</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/wii-fit-patent-lawsuit-dismissed/">Wii Fit patent lawsuit dismissed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 11:30:00 EST. Looking to get in shape for, uh, Christmas? This November, Ubisoft will release its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/your-shape-fitness-evolved-2012-coming-this-november/">sequel</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect">Kinect</a> launch title <em>Your Shape: Fitness Evolved. </em>Luckily for us, Laurel House is ready to talk about the sequel <em>now</em> in this latest trailer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/14/exercise-your-eyeballs-with-this-your-shape-fitness-evolved-201/">Exercise your right to view a Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012 trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jul 2011 01:00:00 EST. Need a little encouragement to get started on your New Year's resolution to cut your body fat in half while simultaneously <em>doubling</em> your muscle mass? Well, it sounds like that particular goal might require some elective surgery to achieve -- but if you're looking to get <em>generally</em> healthy, the Entertainment Consumers Association wants to help. The ECA Institute has put together an initiative dubbed <a href="http://www.ecainstitute.org/content/gamers-health">Gamers for Health</a>, which will "provide ECA members and the gaming community with the tools and resources necessary to help incorporate gaming activities into healthy lifestyles."<br />
<br />
We doubt that mission statement translates into "free <em>Wii Fits</em> for everyone" -- rather, the program will allow ECA members to create a profile and list their daily exergaming activities, sharing goals and tips with fellow users. That's not a terrible idea; we've long searched for a way to share our "Pok&eacute;mon and Pilates" technique with the masses.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/06/eca-institute-launches-gamers-for-health-program/">ECA Institute launches Gamers for Health program</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 04:00:00 EST. Next month, Ubisoft begins a full-on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/your-shape-fitness-evolved"><em>Your Shape: Fitness Evolved</em></a> DLC strategy by offering its first of 12 planned fitness program packs throughout the first half of 2011. This first content pack, which will be available in "early December," includes the "Body Toning Program" and "Cardio Boxing Platinum," a new fitness regimen and advanced exercise class, respectively. <br />
<br />
The second bunch of DLC, available "shortly after" the first set, will include "New Year New You," a program designed to get players back into shape after the holiday festivities, and "Dance Workout Bollywood," a high impact dance workout using popular Bollywood dance moves." It all sounds well and good, but if we can't <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fp3F74GwiwM#t=3m31s">summon demon hipster chicks</a> afterward, we're gonna feel cheated. <br />
<br />
No price has been set for any of the DLC, though Ubisoft did say it'll offer each pack individually or in bundles. We just have one question: With all of that DLC to create, how will you find time to get <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/06/your-shape-fitness-evolved-introduces-your-shape-center-porta/">your online portal</a> fully functional, Ubisoft?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/24/your-shape-getting-12-different-dlc-packs-first-due-in-early-d/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Your Shape getting 12 different DLC packs, first due in 'early December'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/24/your-shape-getting-12-different-dlc-packs-first-due-in-early-d/">Your Shape getting 12 different DLC packs, first due in 'early December'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 23:00:00 EST. One of the ways <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/your-shape-fitness-evolved"><em>Your Shape: Fitness Evolved</em></a> plans on keeping players motivated and encouraging interactivity is with the Your Shape Center, an online portal that not only provides feedback on your own progress but allows players to motivate each other through custom challenges. An example given was setting a certain number of calories users would need to burn over a predetermined amount of time. Then through the online portal, you could see which of your friends completed or failed the custom challenge in question.<br />
<br />

It's pretty much a Wii version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-2"><em>Uncharted 2</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Okay, that's a bit of a stretch. However, one of the levels of Namco Bandai's <em>Active Life Explorer</em> has you running down a train, jumping from car to car, as you try to make your way to the front. Along the way, you'll be dodging overhead lights, in a frantic rush to stop the train from meeting a fiery end. But, unlike Naughty Dog's PS3 game, you're not shooting your way through. Instead, you use a <em>DDR</em>-esque mat to literally run through the game.<br />
<br />
The Wii is no stranger to fitness games (the <em>Active Life</em> franchise already has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/30/joystiq-hands-and-feet-on-active-life-extreme-challenge/">multiple iterations</a> on Nintendo's console). However, what makes <em>Explorer</em> so charming is that it actually feels like a game. The game's Treasure Adventure mode features a world map and story, and has you traveling through the map, talking to NPCs and activating challenges to progress in a quest to find treasures. Although simplistic, the narrative does a good enough job of giving some context to the various mini-games you play.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/active-life-explorer/">Active Life Explorer</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/active-life-explorer/#3179862"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/aleimage002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/active-life-explorer/#3179863"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/aleimage006_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/active-life-explorer/#3179864"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/aleimage013_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/active-life-explorer/#3179865"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/ale004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/active-life-explorer/#3179866"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/ale4pplinsteam_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/preview-active-life-explorer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Preview: Active Life Explorer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/preview-active-life-explorer/">Preview: Active Life Explorer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 20:00:00 EST. Remember when you first played the Rowing event in <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports-resort">Wii Sports Resort</a></em>, and wished that there was some way you could simulate the tactile feedback associated with dragging a paddle through water? Peripheral manufacturer <a href="http://www.ctadigital.com/item.asp?item=2809">CTA Digital</a>, which brought us the 8-in-1 Wii Sports Kit, the Wii Remote Dumbell Set and the <em>9-in-1 Wii Sports Kit</em>, has created a device which fills your very specific need: The Wii Rowing<em> </em>machine, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003E45GI0">currently available on Amazon</a> for $34.99.<br />
<br />
Check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6QaxPU9qBI">a video demonstration</a> of the peripheral after the jump. We know you're probably a little bit dubious, but what you don't know is that you can <em>also</em> use it to do sit-ups. It practically pays for itself, in the sense that having a tight, rippled abdomen counts as its own form of currency.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/20/finally-a-wii-sports-resort-rowing-exercise-machine/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Finally, a Wii Sports Resort rowing exercise machine</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/20/finally-a-wii-sports-resort-rowing-exercise-machine/">Finally, a Wii Sports Resort rowing exercise machine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 May 2010 03:00:00 EST. Was it something <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/nintendo-wins-appeal-in-anascape-suit/">we said</a>? No sooner does Nintendo close the book on the two-year-old <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/13/nintendo-wins-appeal-in-anascape-suit/">Anascape suit</a> than does the prolific peripheral manufacturer get slapped with another legal challenge. <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/28080/Nintendo_Sued_By_Interactive_Exercise_Company.php?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+GamasutraNews+%28Gamasutra+News%29">Gamasutra</a> has obtained documentation of a lawsuit filed against Nintendo, on April 2, by exergaming company InterAction Laboratories, a.k.a. IA Labs, a.k.a. Powergrid Fitness, for alleged patent infringement.<br />
<br />
In typical dramatic legalese, the suit cries out that IA Labs has been "irreparably harmed" by Nintendo's violation of two of its patents through a long list of Wii products. Here goes: the Wii system itself and its primary controllers, the Wiimote and the Nunchuk, and the MotionPlus add-on; <em>Wii Fit,</em> its expansion pack, <em>Wii Fit Plus,</em> and its peripheral, the Balance Board; and the Wii Zapper. <em>Phew!</em> Are we forgetting anything?<br />
<br />
Oh, yes -- the Wii Wheel. Uh-huh, that <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/reinventing-the-wii-wheel/"><em>circular piece of plastic</em></a> is allegedly infringing upon a patent for either (1) "Computer interactive isometric exercise system and method for operatively interconnecting the exercise system to a computer system for use as a peripheral" or (2) "Force measurement system for an isometric exercise device." IA Labs claims that these two patents are used in a number of its products, including the Kilowatt Sport and Exer-Station controller. Both have won an award at separate CES events.<br />
<br />
If you're real up on your Wii peripheral pitches, you will recall the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/wii-sqweeze-is-like-a-thighmaster-for-your-hands/">Sqweeze</a>, a ThighMaster-esque device for your hands, developed by IA Labs and introduced in late 2008. While a PC version appears to be <a href="http://www.sqweeze.com/">available</a>, the Wii iteration never made it to market, perhaps evidence that the relationship between IA Labs and Nintendo soured long ago. Documentation from the recent suit reveals emails from 2007-2008 between the two companies, which had once been in talks for IA Labs to license its technology to Nintendo.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/14/nintendo-sued-by-exergaming-company-ia-labs/">Nintendo sued by exergaming company IA Labs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Apr 2010 19:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Tarrnie Williams, formerly of Relic Entertainment, now spends his days working at EA Burnaby on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ea-sports-active"><em>EA Sports Active</em></a>, which now has him wearing plastic peripherals and extolling the virtues of exercise in his role as executive producer on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ea-sports-active-2.0"><em>EA Sports Active 2.0</em></a>. He's definitely very eager about working out, and he's eager to shake the image of chubby dudes playing games in their parent's basement. He wants them to be fit while they're down there.<br />
<br />
We talked to Williams at the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/ea-sports-mines-your-football-data-and-makes-example-out-of-fav/">EA Sports Opener</a> at GDC where he deftly dodged questions about the Xbox 360 version, and didn't give up much information on the iPhone and iPod Touch versions, other than the fact that "they're online enabled." We'd sure hope so. He does talk about the peripherals and future plans for the property, which includes monitoring your <em>brain</em>. EA Sports' "Season Opener" event at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gdc-2010">GDC</a> contained one major announcement for the developer's bevy of franchises: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ea-sports-active"><em>EA Sports Active</em></a> will receive the sequel treatment this Fall with <a href="http://www.easports.com/news/item/file/EA_Expands_Interactive_Fitness_Product_Line_with_New_EA_SPORTS_Active"><em>EA Sports Active 2.0</em></a> (working title), an updated version of the exergame for the PS3, Wii, iPhone and iPod Touch platforms. The console versions of the game will come equipped with two motion sensors and a heart rate monitor the player can strap to their arms and legs.<br />
<br />
User information in this new game can be shared over an online social network, allowing fellow players to keep track of how frequently you've been skipping out on your demanding workout regimen. EA Vancouver is reprising its role as developer for the title. We'll let you know when we hear more about <em>2.0</em> -- like, for instance, why the game is apparently skipping out on launching on the 360.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/09/ea-sports-active-2-0-coming-this-fall-to-wii-ps3-and-iphone/">EA Sports Active 2.0 coming this fall to Wii, PS3 and iPhone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 22:50:00 EST. It doesn't take a research grant to figure out that exercise -- heck, just walking around the block once a day -- can have a dramatic effect on a person's well-being. The problem is that so-called "older adults," who are particularly prone to a mild but no less debilitating depression known as subsyndromal depression (SSD), are really just too bummed out to do much of anything. Here's where the grant money comes in: Dilip V. Jeste, MD, and his team of researches at UCSD gathered up 19 seniors diagnosed with SSD and had each of them play <em>Wii Sports</em> for 35 minutes, three times a week.<br />
<br />
"The study suggests encouraging results from the use of the exergames," Dr. Jeste reports. "More than one-third of the participants had a 50-percent or greater reduction of depressive symptoms." Additionally, most participants claimed that learning to to play those <em>darned vidja games</em> was actually pretty easy -- even enjoyable. Uh-oh. Red flag!<br />
<br />
You see, had Dr. Jeste continued his study, he might have found that his guinea pigs would soon discover that <em>Wii Sports</em> can easily be played with the slightest flicks of the wrist and, ah yes, it is nice to just sit back on the couch again, but, oh boy, this game is really getting boring, so let me just get on the dag blasted google and see what -- <em>here we go</em> -- "the best videogame right now," okay, <a href="http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080509082339AA4DZme">the yahoo's answer says</a>: <em>World of Warcraft</em>. Warcraft, eh? That certainly sounds better than <em>bowling</em>. We think it's <em>about time</em>. Not because there's never been an exercise bike controller before, but because there <em>has</em>. The <a href="http://www.lifefitness.com/">Life Fitness</a> <a href="http://www.gamersgraveyard.com/repository/snes/peripherals/exertainment.html">Exertainment System</a> did the video game/exercise bike interface back in 1994, allowing players to pedal along with <em>Mountain Bike Rally</em> or <em>Speed Racer</em>. However, you had to order the thing, and it cost around $3500.<br /><br />While the bike accessory with Big Ben Interactive's <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/cyberbike-my-body-coach-fitness-games-from-bigben-interactive--the-former-including---and-this-is-starting-to-get-out-of-hand-now---a-full-sized-exercise-bike"><em>Cyberbike</em></a> has yet to be priced, we are <em>certain</em> it'll carry a more modest price point than the Life Fitness system. Unless the company has to make back what it'll lose when Ubisoft sues it for calling its other newly-announced exercise game <em>My Body Coach.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/12/finally-a-wii-exercise-game-with-a-bicycle-accessory/">Finally, a Wii exercise game with a bicycle accessory</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. Ubisoft has released a video for GamesCom highlighting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/your-shape"><em>Your Shape</em></a>, the <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/ubisoft-releasing-your-shape-featuring-jenny-mccarthy/">Jenny McCarthy-endorsed</a>, camera-focused <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming">exergame</a> for Wii. The video highlights the game's camera, giving us a good look at the device and an explanation behind the technology powering it (hint: it's not rocket science). While it bares resemblance to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/project-natal">Project Natal</a>, unlike Microsoft's peripheral, Ubisoft's device and <em>Your Shape</em> will actually be out this year -- more precisely, this December. We know, it's a crazy concept for a game to release during the 2009 holidays.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/20/your-first-look-at-your-shapes-camera/">Your first look at Your Shape's camera</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 16:00:00 EST. Japan will get Nintendo's new and improved version of its fitness title on October 1, as a<a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2009/07/29/wii_fit_plus_date/">ndriasang</a> discovered the above advert showcasing the date for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit-plus"><em>Wii Fit Plus</em></a>. Not only that, but you can also see a price there: &yen;2,000 (about $20) for the game alone, &yen;9,800 (about $102) for the game and Balance Board bundle. Who knows if it'll be priced accordingly when <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/wii-fit-plus-shapes-up-for-fall-lets-you-be-mario/">it hits the States</a> this fall, though we think it's a safe bet. If there's one thing a gaming blog knows best, it's fitness and exergaming software.<br /><br />[Thanks, Mr. Khan!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/japan-gets-wii-fit-plus-on-october-1/">Japan gets Wii Fit Plus on October 1</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 10:15:00 EST. Kids-focused health journal Pediatrics <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/booster_shots/2009/07/kids-exergaming-calories.html">recently published a study</a> that would <em>shock</em> those who decry the health benefits of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming">exergames</a>. The study, which was performed by researchers from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, measured young people's energy expenditure while at rest, while playing <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Dance-Dance-Revolution/">Dance Dance Revolution</a> </em>at two different skill levels, while walking and running on a treadmill and while boxing and bowling on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-sports"><em>Wii Sports</em></a>. That sounds like more physical exertion than we go through in a <em>year</em>.<br /><br />Some of the comparisons between these activities yielded somewhat unsurprising results -- playing the video games burned three times the calories the kids spent at rest, <em>of course</em>. However, the researchers also found that playing these games was a comparable activity to "moderate to intense walking," despite the fact that <em>Wii Sports</em> requires little lower-body movement. It seems that for the first time in recent memory, we've got <em>science</em> on our side. Thanks to the success of games such as <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit">Wii Fit</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ea-sports-active">EA Sports Active</a> </em>and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/jillian-michaels">Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009</a></em>, the medical community is starting to take games seriously as a means to <strike>pump you up</strike> keep us healthy. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE55O2LQ20090625?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=technologyNews">Reuters</a> reports that at this year's fifth annual Games for Health Conference in Boston, a bolstered attendance brought health experts together to talk about these games, and you'd be surprised how much money these titles generated last year.<br />
<br />
"Healthcare is 18 percent of the GDP of the United States and so games for health is probably the largest sector of activity in the serious games field long-term," said Ben Sawyer, a co-founder of <a href="http://www.gamesforhealth.org/">The Games for Health Project</a>. He added, "If you add up the 18 month sales of <em>Wii Fit</em> and the sales of <em>EA Sports Active</em>, Konami's <em>Dance Dance Revolution</em> and other healthy games, the worldwide retail numbers are over $2 billion." That's not a bad slice of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/28/gaming-industry-worth-22-billion-in-2008/">$22 billion</a> pie that gaming lovingly prepared last year, if we may say so.<br />
<br />
Some experts think the government should look into offering these types of games in schools to help kids learn the importance of exercise, while others think that a public service campaign should be started and backed by the president, Congress, and other federal agencies. We'd comment, but we really only play <em>Wii Fit</em> for <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q84FLyWDSAE">the hulahoop game</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/health-games-big-business-experts-push-for-exergaming/">Health games big business, experts push for exergaming in schools</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 26 Jun 2009 03:00:00 EST. Apparently, Mrs. Michaels' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/12/majesco-and-jillian-michaels-to-issue-a-fitness-ultimatum-for/">last </a><em><a href="javascript:void(0);/*1242142087261*/">Ultimatum</a> </em>wasn't <em>ultimate </em>enough -- a recent Majesco press release dropped an announcement that the <em>Biggest Loser</em> star would be featured in two new games this year: <em>Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2010</em> and <em>Jillian Michaels' Pocket Trainer 2010</em>. Man, we don't want to be rude or anything, but this couldn't have come at a better time. When we think of exercise and gaming (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming">exergaming</a>), we think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, much like most of you, we imagine. Thankfully, a trio of gents have come up with a more inspired way to get your sweat on: <em>Space Invaders</em>. As their final <a href="http://www.themattcave.org/2009/04/final-project.html">EE316 (Computer Engineering) project</a>, Matt, Doug, and Allen combined a Bluetooth heart rate sensor with an Axis network camera (and some code) to make one of the best ways to get your heart pumping this side of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dk0MWN9ymI"><em>running from the police</em></a><em>. </em>Check out video of it in action in the source link below.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/space-invaders-used-to-encourage-exercising-snag-an-a-in-ee316/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/27/college-project-combines-exercise-with-space-invaders/">College project combines exercise with Space Invaders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Apr 2009 19:00:00 EST. You've already seen what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/24/see-the-accessories-included-in-ea-sports-active/">comes in the box</a>, now watch what the Balance Board adds to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/EA-Sports-Active/">EA Sports Active</a></em>. Using the fitness-focused peripheral, players can lunge to hit tennis balls, skate on one foot and dance the night away, all in the name of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming/">exergaming</a>. Of course, use of the peripheral is optional but this trailer recommends adding it to your daily routine and the game's 30 Day Challenge (aka, the Career Mode) to "broaden" <em>Active</em>'s variety.<br />
<br />
To recap: <em>EA Sports Active</em> makes use of a leg strap, resistance band, the Wii-mote, nunchuck and (optional) <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-balance-board">Balance Board</a>. We presume EA is looking to break some kind of Guinness World Record for most peripherals used by a player, at once. We can't wait for <em>Active'</em>s next add-on to be revealed -- a spandex leotard that measures the player's heart rate and reduces their self-respect.<br />

Some New York city schools are <a href="http://www.nypost.com/seven/04062009/news/regionalnews/kids__yes__wii_can__163127.htm">testing a new program</a> for physical education, one that utilizes Nintendo's popular <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> package. Trading in dodge balls for Balance Boards, several different schools received free bundles from Nintendo, but Lori Rose Benson, head of the Department of Education's Office of Fitness and Health Education, admits she wasn't on board at first. It didn't take her long to get with the program, however, as she realized that "students learn in lots of different ways and that we can engage students in physical activity through gaming and through interactive techniques," which is really what's important. Well, that and making sure you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/16/make-like-pele-with-wii-fit-soccer/">block all of those soccer balls</a>.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/07/nyc-schools-testing-wii-fit-for-phys-ed/">NYC schools testing Wii Fit for Phys Ed.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 15:00:00 EST. Exergaming is in. So, <em>EA Sports Active</em> really should rake in the bucks. It'll support (but won't require) the <em>Wii Fit</em> balance board and to make the package even more attractive, it'll include two peripherals in the box. The leg strap (after the cut) will allow you to attach the Wii Remote to your leg. The game will then keep track of your movement, allowing you to run and jump without feeling too tethered down by a physical object.<br />
<br />
The resistance band (above) will allow you to do other exercises that work out the upper body -- a rarity in the Wii exercise genre. These two peripherals are small, and really do allow for some freeform movement. Will you be picking them up?<br />

To achieve his goal, he turned to an innovative home-based training program that makes virtual trainers available at all times -- otherwise known as <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/wii-fit-measures-my-apartment/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>. Bell credited time spent with his children, playing the Balance Board-equipped exergame, with the 25-pound weight loss he accomplished before returning to training camp.<br /><br />"It said I was obese," said the professional athlete (seen here <a href="http://www.sdmadres.org/lunchpast.html">judging a cookie contest</a>). "If you're obese, it makes [your character on the screen] obese. I was disappointed that I was that big."<br /><br />While we're happy to see <em>Wii Fit</em> getting some good press (it's a bit of an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/nintendo-boasts-npd-success-that-offset-competitors/">underdog</a>, and could use the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/03/uk-charts-wii-fit-call-of-duty-still-on-top-professor-layton/">push</a>!), we can't help but wonder if there might have been some kind of outdoor activity that Bell could have used to lose weight. There's bound to be some kind of sport he would like, right? Like cricket or kickball. Something like that.<br /><br />[Thanks, Joaquin A!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/16/padres-player-leans-on-wii-fit-for-weight-loss/">Padres player leans on Wii Fit for weight loss</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Feb 2009 22:55:00 EST. At least, that's the thinking we imagine went on in the meeting when the concept of <a href="http://www.riiflex.com/index.html">the riiflex</a> was developed. And they surely don't get in the way of the buttons, as these 2- and 5-pound attachments promise "access to all Wii Remote functions." Well then, sign us up! We've all likely been accosted by a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamestop">Gamestop</a> employee, at one time or another, about a subscription to <span style="font-style: italic;">Game Informer</span> or a strategy guide to go along with the title we were planning to pick up or something. Well, it would seem that Gamestop is perfecting their craft, targeting folks with a need for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming">exergaming</a> with subscriptions to mags such as <span style="font-style: italic;">Cosmo</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Redbook</span>.<br /><br />Unlike other solicitations from the retail giant, this is actually <em>free</em>, though, which is a big improvement for them. Upon purchasing select exergaming items of $35 or more (semi-full list of qualifying items can be found past the break), Gamestop will toss in a 12-month subscription to either <em>Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Redbook, Good Housekeeping </em>or <em>O Magazine. </em>Head past the break for the products that were mentioned to be part of this promotion.<br /><br />
<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/would-you-like-a-subscription-to-cosmo-with-your-wii-fit-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Would you like a subscription to Cosmo with your Wii Fit today?'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/06/would-you-like-a-subscription-to-cosmo-with-your-wii-fit-today/">'Would you like a subscription to Cosmo with your Wii Fit today?'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 12:58:00 EST. <br />You can file this one in the "almost too good to be true" pile -- in fact, while you read this post, we advise repeatedly pinching yourself. If you're a Brit searching for a copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/wii-fit-measures-my-apartment/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> in time for Christmas, you'll already know that <em>nowhere</em> has it. As we see it, you have three options:<br />
<ul>
    <li>You can buy your loved ones something that isn't <em>Wii Fit</em> and <em>ruin Christmas for everybody like a big jerk</em>.</li>
    <li>You can fork out obscene amounts of cash for a copy from some eBay scalper who bought the last 25 units at GameStation in November.<br /></li>
    <li>You can visit <a href="http://www.buyitplayit.com/">BuyItPlayIt</a> this Friday and press F5 a lot. The site has a big old pile of <em>Wii Fit</em>s that will be on sale from <strong>1:00pm GMT</strong>, with the first fifty going for the <em>unbelievable</em> price of &pound;50 (in probably less than fifty seconds). That's &pound;20 lower than the standard price. We are <em>quite</em> <em>certain</em> that the site could charge twice that and clear its inventory in minutes, but there you go.<br /></li>
</ul>
We've never used BuyItPlayIt ourselves, incidentally, so can't pass comment on its standard of service. Have any readers shopped there before?<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/">Unwrapping Wii Fit</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#819008"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfun-m22001ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="The box arrives!" title="The box arrives!" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#818971"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfubgal-m22010ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#818972"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfubgal-m22009ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#818973"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfubgal-m22011ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/unwrapping-wii-fit/#819003"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/05/wfun-m22007ak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Batteries" title="Batteries" /></a></div><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/in-the-uk-get-wii-fit-for-50-this-friday/">In the UK? Not many games become diamond-sellers -- that is, pass one million sales -- in the United Kingdom. According to ELSPA, only nine titles have managed the feat since it started recording sales in 1999. As of today, a further two have joined that elite group, and both are close to our hearts: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/wii-fanboy-review-mario-kart-wii/"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/22/five-quick-wii-fit-factoids/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>.<br /><br />They've taken their sweet time getting there, however. Fellow diamond-seller <em>Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas</em> took just three weeks to break the seven-figure landmark in Britain, while <em>Mario Kart Wii</em> and <em>Wii Fit</em> took 32 and 30 weeks, respectively. On the other hand, there's no doubt that both epitomize the "evergreen" appeal of popular Wii titles -- whereas games like <span style="font-style: italic;">San Andreas</span> had a very explosive start and then faded, the Nintendo pair are still in the top five in the <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&amp;ct=110015">latest UK charts</a>.<br /><br />Hit the break for the full list of titles that broke the magic one meeeellion mark.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/our-favorite-mario-kart-tracks/">Our favorite Mario Kart tracks</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/our-favorite-mario-kart-tracks/#772272"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/cup-choose-mk-gal-feat_thumbnail.png" alt="The basics" title="The basics" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/our-favorite-mario-kart-tracks/#772119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/mario_kart_wii_wario_cg_gall_feat_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Striking gold" title="Striking gold" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/our-favorite-mario-kart-tracks/#772032"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/dkmountain2_cs_0424_thumbnail.jpg" alt="This volcano is mad at me... can I turn around?" title="This volcano is mad at me... can I turn around?" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/our-favorite-mario-kart-tracks/#772268"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/mkwii-delf-sq-mkgalfeat_thumbnail.jpg" alt="A total square" title="A total square" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/our-favorite-mario-kart-tracks/#772029"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/04/yoshivalley_cs_0424_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Don't fall off that cliff" title="Don't fall off that cliff" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/mario-kart-wii-fit-hit-sales-landmark-in-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario Kart, Wii Fit hit sales landmark in UK</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/mario-kart-wii-fit-hit-sales-landmark-in-uk/">Mario Kart, Wii Fit hit sales landmark in UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 16:30:00 EST. <br />Yes, we posted about this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/gamestop-wii-supply-should-last-until-early-december/">before</a>, but as the giant boulder that is the holiday season ominously thunders towards us, we may as well say it again: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamestop">GameStop</a> will probably have some major Wii shortages in the near future.<br /><br />Chief financial officer David Carlson admitted in a conference call that the hardware "may be well out of stock by the holiday season," echoing another executive's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/gamestop-wii-supply-should-last-until-early-december/">recent claim</a> that the 'Stop's inventory would be empty by the first week of December. He added that both <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/06/cant-find-wii-fit-here-are-some-alternatives/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/14/wii-most-popular-platform-for-guitar-hero-world-tour/"><em>Guitar Hero: World Tour</em></a> were "in very, very short supply" and "out of stock in many cases" respectively.<br /><br />Obviously, plenty of other places sell Wiis, but if a major name like GameStop is running out of the things, you can bet they won't be alone. Unless you want to end up like Johnny and Orlando up there, get your skates on.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/gamestop-repeats-itself-wii-shortages-likely/">GameStop repeats itself: Wii shortages likely</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Nov 2008 13:39:00 EST. Boxing manufacturer Everlast has revealed that it will be joining the burgeoning Wiimote/Nunchuk <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/peripherals/">add-on</a> market, starting with these $30 synthetic leather <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/boxing">boxing</a> gloves. Why? Because it's the <em>end times</em>, that's why.<br /><br />Still, <em>The New York Times</em> seems impressed. "The gloves give you some sense of being in the ring," lies the once-respected newspaper. Obviously, we don't have to tell Wii Fanboy readers that this is tat, but, y'know, inform your relatives/friends or something, before you find yourself wearing these <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/christmas">Christmas</a> morning.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=63649">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/everlast-boxing-gloves-float-like-a-butterfly-look-like-a-chum/">Everlast boxing gloves: Float like a butterfly, look like a chump</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 21:15:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/21/take-twos-zelnick-flexes-for-mens-fitness/">latest Men's Fitness magazine</a> had an interesting story about fitness and gaming (something we call "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming">exergaming</a>"). Apparently, EA is working on their own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> knock-off (remember, we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/ea-plans-western-style-exercise-game-for-balance-board/">heard about this</a> months ago?), complete with their own peripheral. The article states that the new game will fall under the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/27/ea-sports-reveals-its-all-play-line-up-for-wii/">All-Play</a>" brand, which is the family-friendly label they use for the Wii. This new peripheral will somehow allow players to attach the Wiimote to their body, measuring how instense they run, squat and do a variety of other exercises, says EA's executive producer Dave McCarthy. <br /><br />We're not subscribers to Men's Fitness, to be honest, so we don't have the article to confirm any of this, so we're marking it as a rumor. If anybody wants to send us a pic or a scan, please, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tips/">feel free</a>. We'll be sure to update the post here.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/rumor-ea-working-on-fitness-title-will-use-its-own-peripheral/">Rumor: EA working on fitness title, will use its own peripheral</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Oct 2008 12:45:00 EST. Uh, guys? Did your Balance Board come with a set of damn monkey bars? We're starting to feel a little ripped off. Just asking.<br /><br />The first trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/12/loser-leader-stepping-up-to-the-balance-board/"><em>J</em><em>illian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum 2009</em></a> is out, and while it's full of promised butt-kicking, there's also a fair amount of game footage, as well as some discussion of the title's features. Verdict: the graphics look a little less than good, but does something like this need to look great? It's already one-up on <em><a href="http://nintendowiifanboy.com/tag/wii-fit">Wii Fit</a></em>: part of the title's philosophy is simultaneous multiplayer. Does that mean two Balance Boards? From the footage in the trailer, it's impossible to tell whether those games are Wiimote and Nunchuk only, or if they require boards.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/20/jillian-michaels-fitness-trailer-2008/">Jillian Michaels' Fitness Trailer 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 20 Sep 2008 13:30:00 EST. <br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r94AJzJZZaU">Pow! Blam! Thwack!</a> That's the sound of the Wii's biggest software performers in 2008 so far. The likes of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/12/the-cost-to-brawl-just-got-a-lot-cheaper/"><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/21/wii-fit-helps-drive-record-q2-for-gamestop/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/25/wii-fanboy-review-mario-kart-wii/"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> have taken some of the the top places in a new Top Global Markets Report, as calculated by chart specialists Enterbrain (Japan), NPD (the U.S.) and Gfk Chart-Track (the UK).<br /><br />Although top spot goes to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/grand-theft-auto"><em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em></a> (6.29 million copies sold in 2008 so far), the next four places feature Wii games, three of which are exclusives. <em>Brawl</em> (5.4 million) was runner-up, while <em>Mario Kart Wii</em> (4.6 million) and <em>Wii Fit</em> (3.6 million) reached third and fourth respectively. <em>Guitar Hero III</em> (just under 3.4 million) was fifth; obviously, the Wii also had a hand in that.<br /><br />What does this prove? Well, little that we didn't already know: that Nintendo's console and games are obscenely popular -- even when said games cost <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/15/its-pricey-to-be-wii-fit/">way more</a> than regular titles. With four months of the year still to go, we wouldn't rule out one or more of those Nintendo exclusives overhauling that insolent Russian Niko. <br />Are you tired of using videogames to <span style="font-style: italic;">relax</span>? Do you wish you could come home after a hard day's slog at work and wear yourself out some more, before collapsing in a breathless, sweating heap? Then UK-based studio New Concept Gaming has the product for you! People, say "hello" to the Wii jOG.<br /><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Essentially a pedometer that plugs in to the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, using the Wii jOG means that your in-game character can only move when you -- yes, <span style="font-style: italic;">you</span> -- <span style="font-style: italic;">jog </span>on the spot. So, if you want to avoid having Leon's neck chomped by a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/02/four48-faces-resident-evil-challenge/">possessed Spanish villager</a>, or wish to sprint across the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/twilight-pincess">Gerudo Desert</a>, you're going to have to get your own legs moving. The device is apparently available now on the PlayStation 2, but will be heading Wiiwards later this year -- <a href="http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/4-/5984856/Wii-Jog/Product.html#">Play.com</a> has the Wii edition listed for release on October 31st, along with a price tag of &pound;34.99.<br /></div>
<br />That's fairly pricey if you ask us, but hey: this probably isn't the worst idea ever. In the two videos after the break, the developers explain how their device could stave off obesity in kids, which is at least an admirable aim. While you watch those, we're off to recline in our La-Z-Boys and munch some <a href="http://www.aldenteblog.com/2008/07/almost-inedible.html">Krispy Kreme Bacon Cheeseburgers</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/wii-jog-the-stuff-of-our-nightmares-just-might-work-though/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii jOG the stuff of our nightmares, just might work though</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/wii-jog-the-stuff-of-our-nightmares-just-might-work-though/">Wii jOG the stuff of our nightmares, just might work though</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 11:45:00 EST. The site is designed to complement to upcoming Feel Great Britain tour, running through July and August.<br /><br />Nintendo aren't just sitting back and letting <em>Wii Fit</em> sell itself (which it does <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/wii-fit-quick-out-of-the-blocks-in-britain/">quite nicely</a>, thanks). Now, sports trainers are looking to <em>Wii Fit</em> to help rehabilitate injured athletes.<br /><br /> "We are looking to incorporate <em>Wii Fit</em> into the athletic training room as far as rehabilitation, for example, on post-operative knees and ankles," said Sue Stanley-Green, professor of athletic training at Florida Southern College. She noted that the success of the console in other rehab scenarios fueled their interest in <em>Wii Fit</em>, stating that "Fitness-oriented video games are also being used more and more in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/17/final-game-of-erickson-sports-wii-bowling-championship/">nursing homes</a> for rehabilitation," also adding "Fitness video games have some really good potential to improve fitness in everyone."<br /><br />
<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/15/wii-fit-already-carving-up-bods-finding-use-in-rehabilitation/">Engadget</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/19/wii-fit-the-new-go-to-for-rehab-clinics/">Wii Fit the new go-to for rehab clinics?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jun 2008 18:00:00 EST. <div align="left">If the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/13/wii-move-uses-balance-board-to-confuse-the-hell-out-of-us/">previous trailer</a> is anything to go by, the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/wiiware/">WiiWare</a> "game' <em>Wii Move</em> looks a little on the ... odd side. We're telling you right now -- you ain't seen nothing yet. In fact, the newest video is so completely bonkers, it needs a <strong>NSFW</strong> rating. Yeah, keep it on the down low.<br /><br />So ... cool. How to be objective about this? The graphics are simple, it will feature online play, and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/balance-board/">Balance Board</a> can be used to create your own moves. Moves like ... burning a topless man with candle wax! Arrrgh! This is <em>nuts</em>!<br /><br />Let's cut to the chase. Seems like a big box of fake. More specifically, it seems like a giant crater of <em>awesome</em>. Here's hoping <em>Wii Move</em> turns out to be more messed up than anyone could ever imagine!<br /></div>

Despite the initial "ZOMG <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit/"><em>Wii Fit </em></a>destruction!" outcry from the mass media, the details of the poll really don't have much to do with Nintendo at all.<br /><br />The general response criticizes <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/dad-finds-son-smoking-pot-attacks-his-weak-point-for-massive-da/"><em>massive damage</em></a> caused by these women knocking over junk as they worked out on <em>Wii Fit</em>. On average, &pound;6.55 per person was the estimated dollar (that is, pound) value of destruction, or a whopping &pound;20 million worth total. <span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Fit</span>, you've got some 'splaining to do!<br /><br />Or, not. <em>Wii Fit</em> isn't responsible for the damage at all, and the original release from Sheilas' Wheels merely mentions the popularity of <em>Wii Fit</em> and Nintendo in general -- then immediately states the most popular home exercise method is watching an instructional video or DVD. Sure, the Wii has been responsible for some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/26/three-year-olds-tennis-tantrum/">breakages</a> in the past, but tacking the &pound;20 million sum anywhere near the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/balance-board/">Balance Board</a> is just poor form. Read over the <a href="http://www.sheilaswheels.com/media/news/LADIES_EXERCISE_SOME_RESTRAINT">official Sheilas' Wheels</a> news article before subscribing to the Wii Fit Angry Mob newsletter.<br /><br />Finally, the results explain that the survey was conducted to gather home damage estimates over the past year. <em>Wii Fit</em> has only been out in the UK for a month. The math doesn't add up, and a genuine attempt to gather information on home <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/canadian-students-compare-wii-to-traditional-exercise/">exercise</a> routines has been misrepresented. Besides, if <em>Wii Fit</em> was solely to blame, what have the women been doing to smash up their stuff during the 11 months before it was released? If you guessed cleaning the kitchen, sewing and baking cookies for the men, you would be correct.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/16/wii-fit-tagged-with-an-expensive-undeserved-bill/">Wii Fit tagged with an expensive, undeserved bill</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:30:00 EST.
