Elderly Ezio and his templar pals get real, real adorable when they're re-created with Legos, as seen in this miniaturized version of the AC: Revelations trailer from E3. The production values aren't quite as impressive as before, but it's got plenty of heart.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer goes Lego

Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer goes Lego originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 10:30:00 EST. Square Enix raised some ire by sending out a cease and desist against the release of a fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel, but the game has found its way out to the Internet anyway. Reddit user buu700 has posted what he says is a final build of Crimson Echoes, the sequel made by fans reusing the original game's sprites. He also leaked a game called Flames of Eternity a couple of weeks back, supposedly a fork of the fanmade title, which "diverged fairly heavily from what Crimson Echoes was intended to be."

Fans who've played the game say the characters are a little different than they remember (main character Crono, silent in the original, speaks, and a few of the dialects aren't quite right). But those hungry for some of the old 16-bit RPG magic will have to take what they can get -- at least until Squeenix's lawyers hear about it.
Fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel finds release originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 04:00:00 EST. There are lots of reasons that wastelanders set out across the post-apocalyptic United States -- to find rogue droids, locate a lost parent, or perhaps simply to escape the shallow grave they woke up in. The three folks in this debut trailer of fan-made Fallout short film "Fallout: Nuka Break," however, are simply in search of a refreshing, cold Nuka-Cola.

The crew in charge of F: NB are known as Wayside Creations, a team of Fallout fans who wanted to make a non-profit film based in its world. No further information is given as to when we can expect to see the completed work, but we're hoping Bethesda doesn't shut down the production before that can happen. Check out the trailer in full after the break.
Continue reading Fan-made Fallout film 'Fallout: Nuka Break' revealed

Fan-made Fallout film 'Fallout: Nuka Break' revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 21:40:00 EST. A Wacom tablet, Photoshop, and a burning love for Alan Wake's live-action prequel Bright Falls are all that YouTube user J3sseM needed to create this time-lapse video of Mr. Wake's portrait (real-life Finnish actor Ilkka Villi). Oh, right, and lots of artistic talent. That probably helped too.
Continue reading Alan Wake speed painting animates the actor behind the pixels

Alan Wake speed painting animates the actor behind the pixels originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 16:20:00 EST. The case for Desmond, Altair, and Ezio sharing the same gene pool has never been stronger than in this fan-made music video starring all three. Be aware of some story spoilers, particularly if you haven't completed Assassin's Creed or its first sequel.
Continue reading Assassin's Creed 'Beautiful Lies' music video loves its lineage

Assassin's Creed 'Beautiful Lies' music video loves its lineage originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 11:25:00 EST. When Twisted Metal co-creator David Jaffe tweeted back in June about his interest in a "low-budget slasher movie" starring TM character Sweet Tooth, Blue Goggles Films took the idea and ran with it. The studio recently cut its first trailer for Twisted Metal: Home Sweet Home, and we checked in with both Jaffe and Blue Goggles to gauge the reception. "Fucking fantastic -- and yes, please quote me on that," was Jaffe's initial response. "Just great and totally the kind of thing I want to see happen with the character."

Blue Goggles, of course, had no idea what kind of response to expect upon the trailer's release. "We've lived in a bubble for the past month while we were making it and, while we thought the project was going to be cool, we didn't know if other people would," director Ben Moody told us. He confirmed the genesis of the idea, saying, "The whole concept for the trailer was directly inspired by Jaffe's quote/tweet about wanting a Sweet Tooth slasher movie for the PSN."

As for the project's future, both Jaffe and Blue Goggles would like to see Sony pick up the would-be feature (the film is currently planned as a free release since Blue Googles does not have the rights to commercially distribute it.). "This is what needs to happen: a straight-to-PSN Sweet Tooth slasher flick! Will it happen? I dunno -- but man I hope so!" Jaffe urged. "Either way, this fan film is really, really cool. What a neat thing to see. Whoever made it -- thank you! Great job that captures the low budget slasher flicks of the '80s that I hold so near and dear to my heart. Now let's just hope Sony jumps on board and we can get a whole feature out of it!"

Moody is equally enthusiastic, saying, "Since we've seen such a great response in just one day, we plan to get in touch with Jaffe and Sony to see if they are interested in making a full-on slasher movie starring Sweet Tooth for the PSN."

As of publishing, Sony had yet to respond to our request for comment.
Jaffe loves fan-made Twisted Metal movie, wants one on PSN originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 18:00:00 EST. Back in June, Twisted Metal designer David Jaffe shared the idea of a movie based partially on his game's automotive carnage, but focused on one of its most iconic characters, Sweet Tooth (real name: Needles Kane). "I want us to make an honest to goodness, low-budget slasher movie and sell it on PSN exclusive," he told his Twitter followers and fans.

While it's unknown whether the concept has gotten the green light since then, a handful of fans have created a free trailer based on Jaffe's initial pitch. "Twisted Metal: Home Sweet Home" sees the psychotic clown offing obligatory, oblivious young people one by one and driving his decidedly unsavory ice cream truck.

If the violence makes you feel uncomfortable, just remind yourself that Sweet Tooth's victims are probably those people who think it's still cute and quirky to tell everyone how scared they are of clowns. They deserve it.
Continue reading Fan-made Twisted Metal trailer makes a slasher out of Sweet Tooth

Fan-made Twisted Metal trailer makes a slasher out of Sweet Tooth originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 15:00:00 EST. Project lead Frederik "Fresch" Schreiber has received a non-commercial license to proceed with Duke Nukem: Next-Gen, his Unreal Engine 3-powered Duke Nukem 3D remake. Fresch secured the license in just under three weeks after his first announcement -- a credit to rights holder Gearbox's openness to share the franchise with the community -- and has aleady assembled a team of nine other contributors (though he is still "hiring" for a number of positions).

Fresch, who abandoned similar "next-gen" remakes of Daikatana (too unpopular) and SIN (shut down by MumboJumbo), has plans to release a public multiplayer demo of Duke Nukem: Next-Gen "sooner than you think." Of course, the full version will be released "when it's done" -- and he notes that "Duke Nukem: Next-Gen" is, wisely, just a codename.

Fan project Star Trek Adventures: Year One has the unusual distinction of being doubly retro. Not only does it meticulously recreate the nearly 45-year-old Star Trek series, it's also got an uncanny resemblance to an early '90s adventure game (think Quest for Glory or, indeed, Interplay's Star Trek 25th Anniversary). The act of playing forces one to simultaneously pine for two bygone eras, the effect of which is not unlike watching Fruit Brute playing with a Teddy Ruxpin.

If you're unsure whether or not you can handle that level of nostalgia, there's a demo for the game on the project's official homepage.
Update: We've added the full video after the break. Enjoy!

When the folks at The Duo Group aren't busy making short films, animations, or advertisements for various entertainment companies, they make ... short films and animations just for the fun of it. Case in point, the recent Assassin's Creed fan film "Initiation," which provides a prologue piece on Altair joining the assassin's guild.

Though the whole 10-minute shebang is set to be released sometime today, we can only provide the teaser still above and a preview after the break for the time being. We did, however, watch the entirety of "Initiation" this morning, and can assure you it'll be worth your time when it does finally arrive later today.

YouTube user ProfessorGigaton has a pair of videos showing off his latest diabolical creation: a life-size model of Fallout 3's Railway Rifle. If you're inclined to take on the project yourself, one of the videos features a full tutorial to help you create your very own non-working replica. Lazy, like us? The supposed professor -- we're waiting on his school transcripts -- is also selling the model featured in the videos on eBay. The starting bid is $45, and it's sure to look great with your Fallout 3-inspired cosplay ... and will definitely come in handy in the post-apocalyptic world of 2012.
The Kirby we know and love is "one tough cream puff," but in this short from the mind of one MB McClain, he's a serial killer who ingests his victims in order to absorb their souls. His lovable antagonist from the games, King Dedede? He's a grizzled detective who vows to capture Kirby ... dead or alive. Yep, folks, it's another day of disturbing gaming videos here at the 'stiq.

In fact, if you have any little ones, we suggest you shoo them away before watching the trailer (more of a short film, really) after the break, lest they grow up to make the kind of video you're about to fuel six months' worth of nightmares with. While we're not sure McClain's Kirby could ever carry an entire film, he could make a good second-rung <strike>slasher</strike> absorber in the next Freddy vs. Jason.

[Thanks, BPM!]

Continue reading Kirby's Dreamland 'movie' trailer is the stuff of nightmares

Kirby's Dreamland 'movie' trailer is the stuff of nightmares originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Aug 2009 23:59:00 EST.

Lots of news has been popping up lately about fan-made sequels to some of the most beloved games of bygone days, Chrono Trigger and Star Fox being just two of the more notable examples. As most of you have likely noticed, these games follow a pretty predictable pattern: a bunch of fans put in a ton of work on a sequel to their favorite game, those fans tell other fans until that project ends up getting noticed by the blog-o-sphere, and then the lawyers of the original game maker eventually squash the project to an often loud outcry from the fan community. It's the 21st century re-telling of the fan fiction legal drama, and when it comes to copyright law, the story really hasn't changed.

This all relates back to those rights that make up copyright, which we've discussed on a number of occasions in this very column. In fact, the primary right is the control over derivative works, the very same right that is often cited in the machinima realm. In short, the holder of a copyright has the right to control works based on the work protected by copyright, such as sequels and prequels. That would seemingly address all fan sequels, correct? If the issue were that cut and dry, I likely wouldn't be taking the time to write a column on it.
Continue reading LGJ: Fan sequel? Savage Land Pictures have revealed a gorgeous photo set inspired by the 2008 Electronic Arts action title, Mirror's Edge. The shoot, which Savage Land Pictures notes took months to plan, includes sixteen images of a model dressed as Faith traversing rooftops and interacting with armor-clad enemies. The set isn't completely realistic however, as "Faith" is shown holding a pistol and the image doesn't completely break... like the game did when she picked up a weapon. Just kidding, kinda.

[Via SlicedLime Twitter]
Gorgeous Mirror's Edge inspired photo set leaps into view originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 May 2009 02:02:00 EST. I think he's just about the cutest thing ever, which meant he was a clear choice for a Show and Tell session. This foray was made easier by the fact that I'm clearly not alone in this opinion -- there's Mega Man stuff everywhere. If it can be pieced together out of blocks, there's a retro Mega Man version of it, and this week, we're celebrating some of the great fan-made creations we've seen. Take the guided tour right here, or simply jump into the gallery below to enjoy Mega Man.

Each week our sister site Joystiq showcases a free PC game available to those who posses both too much free time and the internets. This week's entry is Mario vs. Spartan: The Game. Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like.

Sure, the game isn't considered top tier in the world of free flash games but it features two things our readers may be used to; Halo and hating on other platforms / characters from other platforms. Can you, as Master Chief, finally dispatch the nuisance that is Super Mario? Get thee to a nunnery! We admit that this unofficial commercial is predictable and probably a bit corny, too -- just like our post title -- but at least it's 10 million times more entertaining than Sister Act.

As for the origins of the clip, Youtube user Phil Strahl and several of his classmates at the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg shot the commercial for a Post Production course last year. The blocky platforms will look familar to players of the original Super Mario Bros., as well as many of the background elements. It's not an exact replica (nor is it meant to be), but the similarities are impossible to deny. Also, the PC version of the map includes music and sounds from the beloved classic.

It doesn't really irk us that this Mario/Metroid mélange is at least eight minutes too long, because it manages to confirm a sneaking suspicion that we've held for some time now: that there is a niche between 2D Mario and 2D Metroid games, just aching to be filled.
Fan-made videos of this quality are few and far between, but the Super Mario Galaxy DS trailer we've embedded past the post break (for spoiler-related reasons, so be warned) is one of the most professionally produced we've seen to date. Judging by the user comments submitted in response to this over at GameTrailers, many viewers have been duped into believing this is a real game.

Alas, it isn't, but it sure does get the old pulse racing.
Continue reading Fan-made Mario Galaxy DS trailer almost fools us

Fan-made Mario Galaxy DS trailer almost fools us originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 09:45:00 EST.
Because this video has been out since May, you might have seen it already. If not, though, we highly recommend taking a look at this fan-made Zelda movie called "Dark Sage." Using a program called 3DS Max, Youtube member Coloniser combined his game designing skills, talent, and awesomeness to create this Zelda homage.

We're definitely impressed by this project, and only hope that there will be a sequel in the future.

[Thanks, Jack!]

There's not much to say about this trailer, except that it's full of understated brilliance. Dementium: The Ward videos have all (successfully) tried to scare the crap out of us, but somehow this one is the most disturbing. At the very least, it's certainly the most comical.

Interestingly enough, this video is fan-made. Gamecock fanatic Regie Miller sent his videos to Destructoid and told them, "Whether it was Gamecock's plucky chutzpah or the Je ne sais quoi charm of a man in a rooster mask I'll never know, but one way or another this starry-eyed idea machine found its way into my heart and there it stayed and laid eggs." Oh ... okay, then.

It's unclear as to whether Gamecock bought the rights to Miller's trailer, but it certainly looks that way. Since we couldn't find it at the official Dementium and Gamecock websites, however, we can't be sure.
