Pokémon X/Y was announced for the 3DS two days, a game slated to emerge from its Pokeball worldwide in October. Pokemon X/Y promises more cinematic battles and a 3D cel-shaded art style that does away with the 2D pixel sprites found in previous Pokémon games in the past.

This week has been relatively quiet in terms of Mario-related news, but should that deter us from our regularly scheduled plumber fanfare? If you answered "yes," you're wrong. It was a trick question. Today is Friday and we are going to damn well talk about Mario. We don't take this feature lightly. In fact, each Friday the WiiFanboy offices are rife with Mario cosplay and Mush Kingdom decor. We even release various species of turtles and name them after the Koopa Kids to keep us company during the course of the rigid blogging workday.* This blogger is presently sporting his sweet denim overalls, beneath of which are a pair of Goomba boxer briefs that he probably grew out of years ago and a Toad tank top that reads, "I'm the best!!"

So! All things considered, let's dive into this thing. Today we're admiring Mario fan art, and our new gallery is comprised of what we feel to be the outstanding work among so many scribbled Mario atrocities on the Internet. We kept this collection mostly limited to hand drawings, digital renders and photographs, which means you won't be seeing any wedding cakes. Now kick back and click through!

You might be feeling disheartened about not hearing back from the organizers of the Little King's Story "UMA" Contest, a competition that gave fans a chance to have their art appear in the game. But don't pack your crayons away and sulk just yet, because Sega is offering the exact same prize for Sonic and the Black Knight.

If you're over 13 years of age, reside in the U.S. or Canada (there will be a European contest in the future), and are willing to draw Sonic or one of his awful friends, then get entering! If you're one of the twenty artists selected by Sega, your art will appear in the title, and you'll get a free copy of the game.

Did we say twenty? We meant nineteen. Naturally, we're super-duper drawers and color-inners, so you may be lucky enough to have your art placed next to ours in Sonic's world! That's right: we just asked you to bring it.

This original drawing by Ryan Stegman, penciller of Marvel's Magician: Apprentice, isn't actually that different from any other Zelda fanart you'd find on the Internet, except
  1. it's more expensive, and
  2. it's way awesome.
We never subscribed to the idea of Zelda needing to be dramatic and intense and stuff (which, we suppose, means we're on the Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass "team"), but we can recognize wow-inducing pencil art when we see it, and this drawing instantly evokes an adventure on which it would be dangerous to go alone.

If you're the winning bidder of Ryan's auction, you'll get not only a lovely full-color print (pictured), but the original pencil drawing as well.

Is it official concept art or is it very well made fan art? (We're leaning towards the latter.) Images of character designs from the upcoming PS3 Final Fantasy XIII and Versus can be found at Ruliweb. The origins of the art is unclear, but considering the incredible size of the Square Enix fan community, we wouldn't be surprised if this is an overzealous fan that's simply showing off. Kudos to them.

If only we had access to our notebooks from back in school, when our fascination for gaming was scribbled in the margins of every single page, whether it be Algebra homework or the cafeteria menu for the month. Oh, to be a young boy again, with not a single care but how high of a score we could achieve in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Thankfully, through the efforts of deviantART user Themrock, we can do just that. Sitting here and staring at the deviantART user's inspired pieces of fanart causes us to swell with nostalgia and reminisce about those times when our only responsibility to ourselves was to play games, not just write about them.

Like everyone else, we imagined Linebeck, Phantom Hourglass' cowardly sailor seaman, as the Jack Sparrow character he was more than likely modeled after. We never really connected him with Al Pacino, but artist Margeaux McClelland insists that the two are one and the same, reading the mariner's lines with the Scarface star's raspy voice.

Margeaux went so far as to paint Pacino's likeness in Linebeck's threads, complete with his flamboyant red scarf. We still don't see the resemblance, but it's a great piece, nonetheless! (We won't ever take sides with anyone against the family.)

If you've got a fetish for franchise mash-ups, of even if you've just always wanted to see what a mess a guitar would look like outfitted with the N64's buttons, stick, and directional pad, then here you are. Michael J. Patrick has this image of Princess Peach rockin' out as an 8x10 print available for sale on his Etsy shop for twelve bucks. It doesn't seem like there's much of a market out there for Princess Peach fanart or mock-ups of guitars with controls from a two-generations-old system, but who knows?

What song do you think she could be playing that would leave her looking so forlorn? Our guess is that it's Nirvana's "Something in the Way." Maybe she's been going through a lot of stuff lately, you know? Whatever's keeping you down, Peach, we hope it doesn't drive you to one day blow your brains out with a shotgun. Some think, "It's better to burn out than to fade away," but you've got so much ahead of you!

The Incredible Hulk is coming to PSP next year, but that doesn't mean we have to wait until then to see more of the green guy. Some would argue that in the above fan art by Scarlet-Dawn, we see a bit too much of him. The angular lines compliment Hulk as a subject, and we can't help but love the fear in the dog's eyes. It also seems appropriate for Hulk to show off his angry physique on the beach. He certainly would get more tail as the Hulk, than as Bruce Banner. Wipeout Pulse is looking quite good. For those fans that are having a difficult time waiting for the game's release, perhaps this amazing fan art will help. Pigou obviously drew this image as an attempt to display what it would be like to pilot a Wipeout racer. The way the dashboard lights reflect off the windows is a really impressive effect. The piece also shows off the competitive nature of the game, by showing another racer on the side attempting to pass ahead. Also, while sunsets in art are a bit overdone, we can't help but love how it works with this piece. This fanart is so powerful that it seems to have crushed the Warp Pipe forums under the weight of its own pile of Diggs. We can understand why-- we've certainly been enjoying staring at it for a few hours.

The full image is after the break, but even in the detail shown above, you can see the insane shading and dynamic movement that make Neo-Geo Forums user hermegildo's drawing so compelling. Faced with a dead Peach and a slavering, hulking Bowser, the usually-jovial Mario abandons his "Okey-dokey"s and flies into battle, fireballs blazing. It completely, awesomely rejects the mood of the Mario series.

Earlier this week we explained Harvest Moon: Boy & Girl. Being the cult hit that it is though, I doubt you'd have to explain the game to the Harvest Moon faithful. Yuina surely knows all about Harvest Moon since she made this dead on fan art. This piece covers the key features of the franchise in one image. You have farm animals, crops and love. With a Metal Gear Solid 2 graphic novel coming to PSP, it seemed appropriate to feature MGS2's hero in fan art form. It's good to see some original Raiden fan art, since there is likely to be many Johnny come lately Raiden fans after MGS4 is released. This work was done by Imson, and very nicely displays Raiden's profeciency with a blade. If only Kojima would have made it so you got the sword earlier in the game, it was a blast to play with. Imson also keeps the hexagonal background theme that is so familiar to the Metal Gear series. Finally, it's great to see the sword trail, and dust kick up. The entire point of our Fan Art series, is to share some of the best gaming inspired works with our readers. Games with striking visuals, tend to make great fodder for fan art. It is because of this fact, that it's unsurprising to see Killzone fan art. This art looks like it was down with colored chalk on gray paper. It was created by the artist known as Kazuya. The fact that this image was done in chalk with dark tones really fits with the Killzone theme. All and all, it makes for a really powerful image. Final Fantasy Tactics box art looks gorgeous. It's so inspiring, that we couldn't possibly put up a Final Fantasy Tactics fan art that didn't measure up. Luckily, this week's fan art by Gemiange certainly does. In case the intro didn't clue you in, this piece depicts characters from Final Fantasy Tactics. It showcases both Ramza and Delita, looking quite upset. It looks good enough, that I wouldn't mind seeing this sort of art in the upcoming remake. We really enjoyed the Mega Man remakes that hit the PSP. They had beautiful graphics to accompany the classic gameplay. Unfortunately, their poor sales killed any chance of future Mega remakes. Fred Andrew Urzua seems to have come up with a way to sell Mega Man: combine him with Hello Kitty. After all, there could be a Hello Kitty branded plague and Kitty fans would line up to get infected. It's impressive that this piece of art retains the cuteness of Hello Kitty, while still having all the distinct features of Mega Man. It seems almost criminal that we hadn't featured a Ratchet & Clank fan art yet. Luckily, this week we got this Ratchet fan art e-mailed to us from Matt. It's interesting to see a more slender Ratchet. It sort of reminds us of the PS3 version of his character model. Not only that, but the lighting and stern look of both Ratchet and Clank is refreshing. Thanks for sending in this great fan art Matt! Using a combination of GIMP and more time than we care to imagine, N+ member Lutherjw has created a smart-looking mock-up of what the Super Mario Galaxy box could look like. Of course the real thing will probably be half as interesting, but what's a gamer to do when he needs a new 3D Mario fix?

Nintendo of America's resident name taker Reggie Fils-Aime promised we would see Galaxy by year's-end, and speculation insists Nintendo will produce a solid release date at Min-E3. Until then, all we can do is sit back and critique Lutherjw's GIMP creation. Needs more Shaq, if you ask us.

When Riviera came out on the GBA, it developed a small following, but didn't quite hit it big. Hopefully that will change when the PSP redux comes out next month. With that in mind, we have this colorful and cute Riviera fan art. This great work is done by Nuriko-kun. There's a great sense of lighting on the image, that is pretty remarkable. PSP Fanboy's love for Gitaroo-Man is great indeed. With that in mind, we're happy to have this vibrant Gitaroo-Man fan art this week. If this fan art seems to have a Japanese feel, it has more to do with than just Gitaroo-Man being developed in Japan. Yayane (the creator of this particular work) lives in the land of the rising sun. It wouldn't be surprising to see this image used as the jumping off point for a Gitaroo-Man anime. This week the fan art is a quite different than what we've featured previously. This unique God of War fan art was done by someone who actually does art for a living. Peet Cooper drew this excellent and stylized image above and he also works for n-Space (creators of Geist). I really like the constrained proportions of Peet's version of Kratos, it gives him a unique look. Oddly, despite his small stature, he actually looks more menacing than the regular rendition of Kratos. If this fan art scares or excites you, visit Peet Cooper's deviantART page or personal website. In honor of the truly excellent announcement regarding Sly Cooper hitting PSP, we have this fan art of the thieving raccoon himself. This lovely and moody piece was done by Neyla. It features Sly thieving across Paris, as the bright shine of a full moon glistens in the background. Seeing new info on the PSP rendition of PaRappa at Sony's Gamer's Day, makes this particular fan art even sweeter. This hippin' and hoppin' piece comes from illjules. Impressively made in the online Oekaki art program. I like the more realistic and 3D take on PaRappa, though I do worry that he might try to throw down if I got on his bad side. I'd take that chance though, just to see him work his magic in the club.

With Rondo of Blood on it's way to our fair system, I thought it was time for some Castlevania fan art. This amazingly drawn and beautifully colored piece comes from Candra. It features Rondo's hero Richter Belmont. I can't even begin to imagine how long it took Candra to put all the detail in this fan art. I personally think this work is a good mix between an anime style like the new Castlevania titles, while still retaining the gothic nature of the old art style. This week's fan art is a bit different in a lot of ways. It isn't 2D, which is rare for fan art, and it also isn't of a particular character. PSPete is a characterization of the PSP itself, though not in the way PSP-tan is. Made as a Valentine's Day present, AngelSan wanted to make something functional, for someone special in her life. Not only is this work impressive because of the detail on something so small, but it also does a great job of turning a lifeless electronic into something cute and attractive. If you want to see more of AngelSan's dolls or other thread work, check out her site. Now if only she sold this, I'm sure plenty of PSP owners would pick up a PSPete for themselves. This profoundly limited-edition copy of Excite Truck was spotted on the shelf at GameStop. Evidently, an employee drew this charmingly quaint alternate boxart instead of using the default GameStop display box for loose games. You can see from the little motion lines that the truck is clearly excited, which is a much subtler approach than the usual bright colors and EXTREME explosions.

We totally prefer the lunch-break line art shown here to the real boxart, but we're still a little shocked that they're selling this copy as a new game with no discount.

LocoRoco may be getting a bit old, but love for the title certainly hasn't diminished. With new demos constantly coming out as well, new fans are always coming into the fray. Because of this, I've chosen the above LocoRoco fan art that was made by Blackmago. I've always appreciated illustration that uses clay, and so that makes me doubly enjoy Blackmago's work. The image looks good enough to be official game art and Blackmago certainly captured the playful innocence of LocoRoco. Hit up his deviantART account to see his other amazing gaming influenced art.

In honor of the just announced Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Hero, I chose this particular Naruto fan art. There certainly isn't any lack of Naruto fan art online, but I liked the tone of this piece. This work of art was done by FireDolphin. I'm not sure how Naruto found time to appreciate a sunset, when he has all that fighting to do, but it certainly is a beautiful sight. Ready At Dawn has been in the news a lot lately, but most PSP gamers still love them for their work on Daxter. This week's art depicts the various qualities of our hero. Wennichelle created this work and I'm not sure I've ever seen Daxter depicted any cuter. If Daxter looks good (and he does) there's probably a reason. Wennichelle has done many Daxter fan arts prior and I actually had a difficult time picking which one I wanted to use. My insatiable need for PSP-tan representations is met again this week. But this week's PSP-tan comes in multi-colors. APNataku is the creator of this sophisticated PSP-tan. I have to say I like her on light earrings. For some reason I can picture this PSP-tan making a cameo in Ghost in the Shell. Last week I asked for PSP-tan fan art since the internet barely has any PSP-tan representations. Luckily, neyLa came through and created this cute (or should I say kawaii) version of PSP-tan. neyLa did a good job of retaining the visual elements of the PSP while still making an adorable girl. Maybe if Sony used this PSP-tan as a mascot, they'd be #1 in sales. This weeks Fan Art Friday submission is so sexy that I'm going to play strip poker with it.. This submission comes from Yuji 28 Go and depicts characters from one of my all-time favorite games: Disgaea. We were intrigued by the incredibly evocative Xbox 360/robot/girl hybrid fan art posted a few weeks ago on Kotaku, but without a translation of the Japanese text, we were at a loss for what was going on. Thankfully, our Gawker-owned friends have posted the above translation for added hilarity. We especially like the bit about the wireless arm that can operate from 10 meters away and the standard handgun from "the land of the FPS." Is that really how the Japanese see us -- as a bunch of gun-loving, FPS-buying thugs? Ouch. They may be right, but still ... ouch.

It's Friday and that means another night of Russian Roulette with my friends and that it's Fan Art Friday. This week we have a Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops art piece that depicts Null fighting Big Boss. It's brought to us from Edward. The look on Snake's face as he narrowly dodged that lunge is as frightened as that time I saw that site with the girl in the tub. Great work Edward, way to bring back those nightmares. No seriously, glad to have the fan art and good taste in games. I'm totally gay for Metal Gear. I've got a jonesing for more cowbell, but even more than that, I want more fan art. Luckily it's Fan Art Friday, so my needs for one of the two will be satisfied. This week we take a look at a Tekken related fan art that depicts Kazuya dealing with Heihachi the only way someone can. Paolo Diego is the creator of this fine work. I could totally picture something like this actually happening in a Tekken game. If you dig the art like I do, go check out Paolo's deviant art account. I'd write more about the piece, but it's sorta a tall work and I want it to fit on the main page for all to see. Thanks for the art Paolo! We called for our readers to submit their own 360 inspired art yesterday, and we got a nifty response today. Coming from 360 Fanboy reader, Andrey (Gamertag: Louco Diamante), is an entire gallery of images. While these aren't made by Andrey himself, he has gone through the trouble of formatting them for the Xbox 360's Dashboard blades. The images come in a high 1920 X 1080 resolution and all of them run under one megabyte for quick navigation. There's a large selection of images to choose from, ranging from Assassin's Creed to Virtua Fighter 5. If you've been looking for some spiffy images for your 360, it's worth checking out. As always, if you've got any 360 related art you'd like to share -- fan art, comics, whatever -- let us know.

Bungie recently unleashed a new selection of some of its favorite Halo related fan art. The pieces run the gamut from silly to amazing, and it's worth a look for Halo fanatics looking for some new desktop wallpaper. Our favorite, Final Destination by benjiphil08, is pictured above. It features a helmetless Master Chief, no doubt taking a breather from a long day of slaughtering Covenant scum. Hit the "read" link for more.
