Over the next week, Xbox Canada is searching for the biggest Halo fan across the Great White North. In order to enter the contest, fans must submit an image proving their Halo devotion to Xbox Canada's official Facebook fan page. The ultimate Canadian Halo fan will score a trip for two to the Halo 3: ODST launch party being held later this month in Toronto, Ontario.

Now, to clarify any confusion -- the contest isn't looking for the "paunchiest" Halo fan, but someone who can prove (via image) that they outshine all other Canadians as the most dedicated UNSC fanboy across the nation. If the winner also happens to be "portly," it's just one of those win-win situations.

We are Xbox 360 Fanboys, but we're not, you know, fanboys. We're all for extravagant gaming setups. Hell, we helped create one. But this ... this defies description, and frankly we're not sure how we missed it (it's been up for two years, apparently).

In the video above you will see the Xbox 360 room of an extremely dedicated man. You might be with him while he's showing off the 360-themed paintjob. You might be willing to follow him along when he shows off the built-in mini fridge. You'll probably be losing him around the time you see the furniture covered in neon green fur. But for us, the abject terror set in when he turned on the green LED lights, giving the whole room an eerie, otherworldly glow.

It was then that we realized this is no game room. This is a dungeon. This is where someone stores you while he prepares to make a suit out of your skin.

[Via poeTV]
Video: Super Xbox Fanboy's dungeon of terror originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 15:15:00 EST.
"To each their own." It's a simple rule that, if universally followed, could result in world peace. On the other hand, if people didn't go online to bitch at each other about video games, then many bloggers would be collecting unemployment. I can't speak for every other hobby that exists, but I imagine that fly-fishing and glass-blowing message boards are considerably more pleasant than gaming forums.

So as it is, the gaming world is chock full of debate. Hrmm, scratch that. The word "debate" conjures impressions of two well-groomed individuals standing behind podiums and taking turns eloquently addressing issues presented to them by a moderator. For every one of these moments, you get a couple thousand boring ones. But when the forum is switched to the Internet, the dialogue transforms into a partisan torrent of vitriol. While political campaigning may be viewed as a chess match between experts, an appropriate metaphor for gaming and Internet debate in general can be found in the gigantic brawl at the end of 1977's Slap Shot.

In particular, Nintendo fanboys seem to simultaneously be a large source of and recipients to such slander. Perhaps it's due to Nintendo's extensive gaming history (especially when compared to Sony and Microsoft). Similarly, many of these Fanboys grew up with Nintendo, with the NES and SNES occasionally acting as a babysitter. For some, an attack on Nintendo is equal to or worse than an attack on one's family. To such individuals, I say take it easy. I'm certainly not above the label of "Nintendo Fanboy" (look at the name of this site for crying out loud), but I do try my best to apply sound reason and understanding to such hostility. I now present to you a look at 5 common weapons used in battle against Nintendo, an analysis of each argument, and how best a supporter of Nintendo should respond.

The word defining folks over at Merriam-Webster Inc. have added "Fanboy," along with 100 other words, to the newest edition of its Collegiate Dictionary*. Fanboy is actually one of the "oldest" of the "new" words, with its origins dating back to 1919. The wordsmiths define fanboy as a "boy who is an enthusiastic devotee, such as of comics or movies." Fanboys should feel free to write with self-righteous fury to MW and let them know it can also apply to video games ... tell them you'll never read their dictionary again if they don't correct this grievous oversight (also make an online petition).

This isn't the first time in recent memory some bit of gaming culture seeped its way into the good word book at Merriam-Webster; "w00t" became the company's word of the year in 2007. So, w00t to all the fanboys out there, the dictionary acknowledges your existence.

*OSX users will find the Dictionary widget, which uses The Oxford American Dictionary, already defines "fanboy." Merriam-Webster is a different company.

'Fanboy' gains respect, enters Merriam-Webster dictionary originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 Jul 2008 23:30:00 EST.
David Keating has decided that it is high time to put his degree in counseling to use, and to write up the anatomy of a fanboy. Now, this isn't the first time anyone has tried to break down what makes us hate the Dreamcast, and love the Atari Jaguar, but it's a nice little read that has the right mix of both intellect and well ... fanboyism.

Yes, that's right, we're saying that Keating, who writes for a gaming website called myarcadeplanet.com, has caught the fanboy gene himself. However, in order to study the enemy, one must become him, and Keating has done a good job of that.

We're not saying he's torn a hole wide open into the fabric of the internets, and turned fanboyism on its ear. However, it's a nice ride and has us realizing why our hackles get raised whenever someone slams the TurboGrafx 16.

After running it through their rigorous gauntlet of tests, Joystiq came to the conclusion that the game was sloppy and hard to handle. More like hard to swallow for all of those looking forward to playing the game on the DS, we imagine.

Even with the ability to guide your attack ship with the d-pad, or exclusive use of the stylus, the game is harder to play than on the Xbox 360, according to Joystiq. With 60 levels to play, we imagine even a little bit of time with the game won't help correct this error. Guess the game just needs analog sticks ...
With a title such as Hotel Dusk, you can see that the Ninendo DS market is interested in more mature titles -- but just how mature? Eric Caoili of Joystiq sister site DS Fanboy has amassed a list of five homebrew titles that show the DS for the sexual deviant mainstream media has occasionally labeled it.

The prevailing parallels between each title is that sex is a predominant theme, but it is tackled in a shallow and surprisingly softcore fashion. As per the usual sex-themed titles found online, the gameplay itself is a simple minigame with little thought required to succeed (the one exception is Virus DS) and, as Caoili quips, R-rated movies feature more taboo content.

What we'd love to see is more mature content, but we'd also like handled in a mature way. For the games industry to tackle more serious topics like other entertainment industries do would be a step in its maturity. And, for the games intended for more private sessions, even those in the homebrew community, how about a little more effort put into their development?

As Caoili notes, adult titles are not going to come from major publishers anytime soon. If you want to see these games proliferate and grow, you have to support the homebrew scene. The linked article is for adults only and is most certainly NSFW.
The dirtier side of DS homebrew originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 07 May 2007 20:34:00 EST. Who's at fault for Nintendo's lack of third-party support: Nintendo, the developers, or the fans themselves? Kevin Cassidy, founder of website GoNintendo, places the blame on the Nintendo community for showing reluctance or unwarranted disdain toward third-party Wii games.

The rant, part of Newsweek writer N'Gai Croal's P2P series, makes a point out of Dewy's Adventure, a game he feels internet users have called in "kiddie" based on its looks alone, subsequently refusing to give it a chance. This is a problem Nintendo had when revealing Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker to be a cel-shaded romp with a pre-adolescent Link. Of course, that game sold well on merit of its Nintendo roots. Dewy's Adventure isn't even out yet, so opinions have room to alter wildly between now and its release later this year.

Is the "kiddie" problem inherently Nintendo's, though? Regard Microsoft's Viva Pinata, a game that has been praised widely but suffers from low (though steady) sales. Is the kiddie image of the title affecting other consoles, too? Cassidy opines that Nintendo fans are clamoring for "mature" titles that include violence and gore, but we feel this is a more universal trend that is affecting all consoles.
Continue reading Are Nintendo fanboys hurting the Wii's 3rd-party support? All you non-believers who think fanboys are soulless amoeba are teh suxx0rz! Wired has broken down the science behind being a fanboy into four simple rules:

Your System Has No Flaws

It's Not Broken, It's Hard-Core

Praising Another System Is the Same as Insulting Yours

Everyone's Biased but You

After taking at least 5 seconds to skim the bold letters above (don't pause for comprehension), you're now ready to pick the gaming system you know is the best and start your crusade. Bonus points for using the phrase "[insert system here] PWNZ" more than ten times in one paragraph. Spelling skillz optional. Blind devotion a must.
How to be a fanboy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Mar 2007 02:58:00 EST. We are, by definition, Fanboys. We're huge followers of Nintendo; we eagerly await every drop of news that springs forth from those locked doors in Kyoto, we have an effigy of Reggie in our bedrooms, and we attempt to feed mushrooms to every Italian we cross in the street.

The word "fanboy" has a negative connotation these days. With the possible exception of the PC vs. Mac battle, it's quite rare to see people galvanize and root for multi-billion dollar companies as we do in the land of gaming. People do not "root" for Paramount Pictures, nor do they "cheer" for Exxon-Mobil. One could make the case that we want Nintendo to succeed because their success will breed more of the same: as in, more of the franchises we know and love. But why are we so passionate, so stalwart in our fandom? Yes, we've adopted the newer style that Engadget has enjoyed for many a moon. The new system allows commentators to have one name and password that works across all of our network sites, totally doing away with those pesky emails that demand confirmation before a comment shows up.

Now, with the new features comes a few snags, sadly. You will not be able to change your password for a little while (we're working on it!) and occasionally you'll notice a URL linked to your name, or your name for that matter, might come out with a couple mistakes. We're also fixing that, as well.Your password will be included in the first confirmation email, so be sure to not trash that one until we can roll out the password change feature.

Once again, I, as well as the rest of the staff, would like to thank you for your continued support of the Nintendo-based fanboy sites. You guys make this all possible for us, as well as enjoyable, and we couldn't do it without you. Hopefully the new comment system will see some more input on topics from those who have been turned away from the comment system of the past.

Thanks, and keep reading!
A note on comments from Wii Fanboy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Jan 2007 13:55:00 EST. Peek was one of the (seemingly) lucky few to score a Wii during this past weekend's re-up, but on her way to the store's exit -- just after an employee announced that all units were sold-out -- she became an easy target for the lingering crowd of Wii-less shoppers:

"Were these people crazy?? Yes, they were ... unsatisfied customers began to grab at my bag ... I was caught off guard in a game of tug-a-war when a security guard intervened and rescued me from the chaos. He took me outside. And the crowd followed."

It wasn't until security flagged down a cop car and tucked Peek inside that the CNN hand escaped certain danger. Or so it would seem. Now they know her name. How long before they discover where Ms. Peek lives?
CNN needs police escort to escape Wii-craving mob originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Dec 2006 13:29:00 EST. Lots of people, lots of driving and lots of coffee. So, in protest of going shopping today I invite you to join me on Xbox Live today for some Gears of War multiplayer fun. I'll be online today (after I take a nap) in the afternoon playing Gears with some friends so I invite you to join us. Who wants to go shopping anyway? And for those Xbox 360 Fanboys that end up kicking my ass I'll update this post and list their gamertags so everyone in fanboy'dom can worship their greatness. Instant celebrity! My gamertag is SuperDunners, so simply send me a friend request or a message stating you'd like to prove your Gears of War greatness and I'll send you a game invite. Yeah, it's quite leisurely and low key and yes you can talk as much smack as you want, but be forewarned ... I am crazy good. Not much, according to the self-proclaimed DS fanboy at BC Gaming. "Both systems have major releases for this holiday, but the PSP has a quantity this time around ... You see, I am not a fan of hardware, but of software. Furthermore, it is crystal clear that Sony has brought a royal flush to the table, while Nintendo is left holding only a high pair."

Ken Edwards points to games like Killzone, GTA, SOCOM, Lumines, E3, Gitaroo Man, Sonic and Metal Gear Solid as reasons why the PSP's holiday lineup is so much better this year. Regardless, he admits that this won't help Sony in the end: "Unfortunately, this is not going to mean a lot for Sony, as the install base of PSP systems is nowhere near that of the DS - quite sad, yet very true."
DS fanboy admits that PSP has a better holiday lineup originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 21:15:00 EST. With Nintendo boasting the intuitive, easy motion-sensing control scheme allowing all types of people to game with ease, we wondered if the control scheme was realistic enough to favor those who excel in these sports in the real world to do the same on the Wii. Sadly, we're all gamers and not a one of us can protest to be great at golf out in the real world. As such, we decided to document our trials in a couple of games to see if we could get the hang of the game, with the future goal being dominating anyone we come across.

Can we step up and own the links right away? The action-puzzler, available now on PC, runs on Unreal Engine 3, makes extensive use of real physics, and manages to stay under the 50 MB limit for XBLA titles thanks to procedural synthesis.

Our buddies over at Xbox 360 Fanboy interviewed Tian Mu, co-founder and CEO of Naked Sky, to talk about his title. In addition to elating aforementioned developer achievements, Mu talked up the humor and non-linear gameplay. The main focus of the Q&A, however, is the development process behind the game. Release date and price are not discussed, but Mu did mention their ongoing work to add multiplayer to the RoboBlitz, as well as plans for future downloadable content.

Xbox 360 Fanboy also has five RoboBlitz t-shirts to give away, with a new contest each day. Today's contest asks you to leave a comment about something fun you can do with physics and they'll pick a entry at random. Our sister site, Engadget, went face to face against Peter Dille, about PLAYSTATION 3 and PSP. Just like Karraker, Dille says that the PSP does not compete directly with the DS:

We're not focused on competing with the DS head to head against the consumer they're going after. If we were, you'd see a very different top-down strategy. You'd see a very different technology that would deliver to games geared towards kids. Which is for the most part what they're doing. And so when people talk about how we're doing vis-a-vis the Nintendo DS, again, it's not the whole story. We're selling a device to guys our age, who are using it to play games, to play movies, to access video on the net, music, etc. And it's a very different product than Nintendo DS... You can look at the software that they sell. All their licensed kid stuff. So, what we're doing with the PlayStation Portable is really establishing a new marketplace, and establishing, frankly, a new beachhead. And that takes time. Having said that, it's the fastest selling platform we've launched to date. We're up to 20 million units worldwide, and that's off to a great start. So, we just need to sort of set people's expectations based on what we're trying to do, not compete against a kid machine.
Ouch. Calling the Nintendo DS exclusively a kid's machine sounds like something a fanboy would do. Didn't Mr. Dille get the memo? The DS is for old people too! Regardless, he makes a very good point about how the DS and PSP are targetting different consumers: they are different devices, and there's no need to directly compare the two. It's similar to how Nintendo keeps saying the Wii doesn't compete with PLAYSTATION 3: they focus on different markets, and do very different things.

Other highlights of the interview include Dille apologizing about how they didn't focus the UMD's library correctly (but they still plan on trying to expand the UMD market. Uh...). Check out the rest of the interview at Engadget to see Dille avoid some crucial PS3 info, and fail to apologize for Kutargai's insanity.
Peter Dille calls DS for kids in Engadget interview originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Nov 2006 14:00:00 EST. They've been reading PSP Fanboy, and they linked to us! Their latest comic discusses the internet's bashing of the PSP, and how the mean things that people say come out of paternal love more than anything else.

Steve, writer of the comic, wrote in his most recent blog post: "Now for the record, I think the PSP is a good system... I just think its made bad mistakes. My main gripe is that the games are not designed for portable, but for console play."

You're right Steve, too many of the older PSP games didn't take advantage of the console's portability. Of course, some of us want console-quality on the go, and the PSP does a good job of appealing to that niche. With shortening load times, and better game design, I think the current and upcoming PSP library will make more uniquely portable experiences for our handheld. Thanks for the mention!
Dueling Analog is, like, the best webcomic, ever originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 03 Nov 2006 15:00:00 EST. Given that most folks are happy with whatever choice they made for handheld gaming (or both if they're pretty hardcore), picture quality superiority isn't all that important in defining a console's overall worth. However, having the word "fanboy" in our title means we need to comment on the report and you fine readers undoubtedly need to comment (we welcome the comments!).

Surprisingly, the picture quality on each device is close to equal. The PSP has a better DPI (dots per square inch) coming in at 130, with the DS Lite trailing at 110. However, the brightness on the DS beats out the PSP, even when plugged in to an AC outlet, by featuring a 200 cd/m² brightness (compared to the highest possible on the PSP being 148 cd/m² and 115 cd/m² when unplugged. Finally, the article points out that the DS is leagues better at handling colors than the PSP, with the largest color gamut of handheld devices at 74%, compared to the PSP's 54%.

According to the report, the PSP wins with a score of B+ compared to the DS Lite's B. Still, the margins of victory are fairly small on each aspect tested, so the technical superiority of either platform is easily argued.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
DS Lite vs. PSP: who has the best picture quality? originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Oct 2006 15:15:00 EST. One columnist found that out, the hard way, and now we have someone else trying to put the "man pants" on and beat down Nintendo like they're his red-headed stepchildren? Oh, no, we aren't having it! Like Forrest said "stupid is as stupid does."

And that's exactly how this piece is coming off: ignorant. Why are you trying to write about the gaming industry and put weight behind your word after you profess to not even be a gamer? That totally validates your opinions, amirite? No, it does not. On top of that, you profess that "if you're a serious gamer looking for serious graphics and serious choice, you'll gladly pay double for a serious console." For being a "non gamer," you sure do know our kind well. Also, since when does "serious graphics" make a console and/or game? Some of the industry's best games have had sub-par graphics!

We're usually calm-headed and objective, but this kind of biased "journalism" gets under our skin. We'll call a spade a spade any day of the week and while our blog is named Nintendo Wii Fanboy and our header image reiterates this title, it by no means makes us irrational, over-bearing fanboys. We love Nintendo because of the great products they provide us, not because they give us "serious choices."

Whatever that means ...
Sharpen those pitchforks: self-professed "non gamer" trashes Wii originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Sep 2006 13:15:00 EST. Gaming Horizon has done the work for you, responding to ten of the most common PS3 issues discussed on forums around the web. It's one-stop shopping for all your pro- and anti-PS3 arguments!

The pro-PS3 responses from three GH editors range from sympathetic to antagonistic to self-deprecating without descending into the sort of fanboy hyperbole that is common on forums. In fact, now that this document exists, we predict that all future forum threads on the topic will be closed and redirected to this calmer, more rational take on the issues. Also, temperatures in hell tomorrow will reach into the single digits and the first annual flying pig competition is predicting a record turnout.
Potential PS3 pitfalls parried originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Sep 2006 10:29:00 EST. In the first, of what we assume will be many more, blows against Sony, You Tube user luigirulesnintendo has put together a video highlighting what he believes to be are the console's stellar attributes and superior capabilities above its more expensive competition. Thought I forgot about your beloved Video Sandwich? Of course not! For those of you that are new to the Sandwich, here's an overview: you get two videos as the "bread" and some commentary in the middle as the meat in the middle (or hummus, for you vegans). This time around, we have one awesome music video from the upcoming Lumines II. Entitled "Heavenly Star," the video was co-written by gaming guru Mizuguchi himself! It should put you in the right mood for some Lumines. Read up on the creation of this song and more at 1UP and expect some a lot more coverage of Lumines II soon.

The bottom video is what I declare the end of the bickering between DS fanboys and PSP fanboys. You guys have waged a video war for too long. At last, we have a real winner in this console war, and it's not what you might expect...

Punctuation and grammar are horrifying and alien concepts, logic is tossed away like an explosive javelin and any semblance of coherence is dangerously teetering on the edge of a dark abyss. In other words, it usually elicits a few good laughs. We present to you the unedited letter we received from a fanboy urging us to purchase a PS3 (hint: it's a very powerful super computer).

Sony PS3 is not a games console its actually a very powerful super computer because you can't have a games console which costs £425 people wouldn't buy it my PS3 magazine said that almost 50 percent of us say its better priced and some of us agreed that it was to expensive or cheap the main problem with PS3 is not the price at all its how many you are getting in the UK for last I heard they said there were going to be 4 million consoles shipped next year in March 2007 but you people have really got to respect Sony you can't say buy a 360 or Nintendo just because you can't afford the price on it its not Sony's fault and it isn't Kutaragi's either there is no point sitting on a sofa all day and night waiting for the PS3 to come out on launch day November 17th here is a list what you can do to wait for PS3

1. Enjoy what's on your PS2 collection at the moment

2. Just don't buy anymore games for PS2 wait until the new PS3 comes out

3. Get a Job earn money you need £425 so you can work hard for it but save it for PS3.

4. Watch your DVDs more and enjoy your collection and get all the new releases on DVD complete all PS1 and PS2 games

5. Don't waste money on 360 and Wii get a PS3 on launch day to get one you might have to pre - order it but you need to do that otherwise you won't get one you can get a good offer from GAME.

Why fanboys make for poor marketers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 16 Aug 2006 20:55:00 EST. While visiting podOmatic, a sudden realization came into my mind: we can make our own podcast! (And so can you at podOmatic-- check it out, awesome site.) People have told us to make a PSP-compatible version of PSP Fanboy, but isn't a podcast so much better?

Here's my proposal. The podcast will feature:

A weekly audio show featuring Chris and myself, reviewing the best of PSP news. Why read when we can READ FOR YOU!!!

Downloadable videos highlighting the best video content of the week.

Maybe some more content/collaboration from Joystiq & the other Fanboy sites. (DS Fanboy VS. PSP Fanboy podcast? Bring it on!)

And of course, it's all compatible with your PSP.

They recently posted a news story about a Loco Roco review posted by a nine year old girl (daughter of the author of The Xbox 360 Uncloaked). Here's an excerpt:

"This game is for younger kids such as five- or six-year-olds. Older kids might not like it. The music is for two- or three-year-olds. It gets annoying with the baby singing. If you beat the level, you get a prize. I haven't beaten the whole level yet so I don't know what the prize is. I'd give this game a one out of four star rating."
What I find absolutely hilarious is how this "kiddie" game seems to appeal to us adults more than this little kid. Even more hilarious are the fanboys flaming the girl on the site:

Wow, that "review" was mediocre. The game is for all ages, just because some people are too shallow to look past certain things like music or graphics doesn't mean it's "for" any certain age range. - Edward

You know what really deserved 1 out of 4 stars? This review... Why do you have a 9 year old review video games? Is it because it (Loco Roco) looks kiddy? Or does everybody think video games in general are kiddy? Well, they're not. - Slamming

If it's such a baby game, why couldn't she beat the first level? - Captin Shmit

Remember folks, it's always really cool to pick on a little girl on the internet.
9 year old girl hates Loco Roco, flaming ensues originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 15 Aug 2006 13:15:00 EST. From the article:

"Ever since man made the very first console there has existed a seedy under-culture of gamers. These gamers have chosen something to stand by forever, and no it's not graphics or the great games; it's the company they stand behind, and why would someone base every decision regarding their gaming future based on a company's past success? The simple answer is fanboyism, a disease that has affected millions! They separate themselves from the good fanboys because they believe that they possess the greatest console on the planet without consideration for the others out there."

Of course, none of you fall into that category. Lately, Sony's fan base has taken nuclear bomb-like hits to the gut for the PlayStation 3, so it's no surprise that some are ready to snap. Immortalized in YTMND form, a GameSpot caller who goes by the name of Jason16888 pretty much sums up every frustration each Sony sheep has been feeling lately. In his own high-pitched girl-like screams, our friend Jason goes into rants on such annoyances as PS3 game prices and bad marketing. He even mentions that he may do the worst thing ever for a Sony fanboy: buy an Xbox 360. Has it really come to this people?

[via Kotaku]
A Sony fanboy gone mad originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Jul 2006 12:45:00 EST. Most of the time, everything goes swimmingly: an interesting link pops up, you let us know, and we write it up. Sometimes, it doesn't go so smoothly.

When we reject a tip, it may be because we've already reported on the story, or because the content of the tip isn't right for Joystiq. Other times, the rejected tip is dead wrong. Usually this is the fault of the source, not the tipster. Very often, rejected tips are also ones that, for whatever reason, make us laugh.

This post is dedicated to the tipsters behind the tips that we didn't use this week.

Continue reading Top five tips we turned down this week

Top five tips we turned down this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 25 Jun 2006 05:05:00 EST.
