Sony's European team has sent out a survey to some of its UK PSN members asking them yet again about possible subscription models for the service. The survey is run by a market research company called Ipsos, and appears to offer up a list of possible member benefits for a few different plan tiers, along with pricing for each. The benefits range from more tame ideas like exclusive and early access to content to more interesting options like "free title trials" (first hour of a game for free), user-to-user challenges, "token wagering" and a service called "catch-up TV." Oh, and since it's Sony we're talking about, there's even a listed option for "cloud storage space for games." You can find the full list of possible features after the jump.

The price options differ from plan to plan, but they go as cheap as £2.99 (about $5 U.S.) up to £14.99 (about $25) for monthly fees, with annual fees also listed for 55% less than you'd pay month to month (so around £19.99 up to £99.99, or $32 to $160). Note that just because all of these things are on a survey doesn't mean that Sony has them up and running -- it only means that they're testing the water in terms of what UK members are willing to pay for certain features. But you can just add this to the growing mountain of evidence that Sony is planning some sort of premium subscription service.

The good folks at IncGamers had a chat with one of BioWare's founding medical doctors, Ray Muzyka, about the company's history of classic single-player gaming and its upcoming foray into the world of massively multiplayer with Star Wars: The Old Republic. Muzyka says that the line between solo and collective experiences is blurring: even traditionally single-player games are dipping into the vast realms of multiplayer co-op and competition through online social tools and downloadable content.

Speaking specifically, he says that Dragon Age: Origins is a good example, with online social features for what is definitely a single-player experience. And Mass Effect 2, he says, will explore these ideas through its own DLC. In fact, he outright guarantees us that BioWare is "planning more [DLC] than in Mass Effect 1." As players who couldn't get enough of the two packs on offer for the original game, that's Muzyka to our ears.
BioWare's Ray Muzyka on how to make single-player gaming more social originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 22:15:00 EST. In a new producer-hosted NHL 10 trailer, EA Sports is showcasing the upcoming title's "Battle for the Cup" mode. Essentially, the mode boils down to kicking off a best-of 1, 3, 5 or 7 game playoff series from the main menu, but tweaks to the game's crowd, AI and other enhancements crank the pressure on high to perform.

Also revealed (albeit last week) was the game's "Be a GM" mode (video after the break), where players take on the role of a team's General Manager and attempt to build a dynasty over his tenure as the man in charge. With so many additions and enhancements hitting the ice in NHL 10, we eagerly await more details on what rival NHL 2K10 has in store. We totally hope they drop the gloves for our hard-earned cash.

Gallery: NHL 10

Continue reading NHL 10 asks gamers to 'Battle for the Cup'

NHL 10 asks gamers to 'Battle for the Cup' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 20:30:00 EST. Although Resident Evil: Degeneration takes place within the same universe as the games, this CG movie received the same mixed reviews as the flicks of the live-action trilogy. The Women unites a number of well-known female thespians in a commendable remake of the 1939 classic starring Joan Crawford. Eagle Eye requires a willing suspension of disbelief if you intent to enjoy it, but with the running time at 2 minutes shy of 2 hours, the whole charade simply goes on for too long. Theatrical releases are above, everything else (including TV releases) are after the jump:
Continue reading Blu-ray releases for the week of December 21st

Blu-ray releases for the week of December 21st originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 21 Dec 2008 18:30:00 EST. Merry Christmas, Japan! While the Western world grows fat on its own laziness (not to mention a massive amount of Christmas food) Japanese game stores remain open to sell five new great PS3 games. What's that strange smell, you ask? That's our pure, unadulterated jealousy. We really want to play White Knight Chronicles. Here's the release list:

US Games
No new releases

EU Games

No new releases

Asian Games

Alone In The Dark

Bioshock

Far Cry 2

Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution

White Knight Chronicles

In case you're wondering, your PS3 is region free. So, yes, you can import White Knight Chronicles if you so wish. We're not sure if it's the sort of game that will get downloadable content, but if it does you'll have to get it from the Japanese PSN Store. Tempting though, isn't it?
Worldwide PS3 releases for the week of December 21st originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 21 Dec 2008 12:20:00 EST. This past week's updates in Asia were rather satisfying. It's all about the games as Lumines Supernova, Crash Commando and a slew of others graced the digital store. See what else is in stock after the break.

You can catch the weekly Asian PS Store update every Sunday, while you can still enjoy EU and NA updates every Thursday. This will be the last Ask PS3F column we're going to write for this year. Are you sad? Well don't be, because we'll come back for sure in January. So cheer up and enjoy the holidays!

Keep checking back every weekend -- we'll be sure to answer all intelligent, fun, and relevant questions that you may have. If you haven't asked us anything yet ... why haven't you? Send an e-mail to majed @ ps3fanboy.com with the subject "Ask PS3 Fanboy." We'd like to stress, if your e-mail doesn't include that subject heading, your question will not be answered. If you've got PSP-related questions, be sure to ask them on Ask PSP Fanboy.

Continue reading Ask PS3 Fanboy: Volume 17

Ask PS3 Fanboy: Volume 17 originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 20 Dec 2008 12:00:00 EST.
The holidays are a time for cheer and gift-giving, but it isn't quite the holidays yet. Instead of subscribing to that whole positive spirit thing, we're going to continue venting our frustrations from last week, only this time with an finger pointed at the tiny enemies that sneak under our skin. "But wait," you ask, "aren't you just channeling unrelated rage at the simple challenges of a video game?" Probably. But try saying that with a group of Micro-Goombas crawling all over you.

Check out this new gallery spotlighting a few of Mario's smaller (but no less menacing) foes.
After finally getting into the booth, attendees were faced with the choice of which long line they'd want to wait in next to play a game. When I got inside the booth and surveyed the selection, my first pick was Excite Truck. Once I'd finally gotten my hands on the controller and made a few laps around the track, I knew this would be a day one purchase for me.

Even after scoping out the upcoming stuff for Xbox 360 and PS3, I was convinced that Excite Truck embodied the true essence of the "next generation." New gameplay dynamics met vast dynamically changing terrain that stretched beyond what we had grown accustomed to.

So when Disney Interactive showed their new ATV racer, Pure, with vertiginous jumps, wild tricks, and expansive vistas, I thought I was looking at the spiritual successor to one of my favorite Wii launch titles, but a Wii version was not in the cards. At least we have a PC version to hack together a GlovePIE script for and give it the Excite Truck treatment.

Revolutionary: Pure Excitement originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 22:00:00 EST. The wild deviation from pretty much anything characterizing Castlevania means that the series' fans are unlikely to be well-served by the game, and people who don't care about the series probably would never give it a second look. Furthermore, fighting game lovers would find Judgment too simplistic for their tastes.

That said, having given the game a chance, I slowly found myself warming to it. It took me a while to shed my expectations of what it should be, however. It's not much of a Castlevania game, and it's not much of a fighting game, but it is a decent third-person, one-on-one brawler. Like Power Stone mixed with Lament of Innocence.

I must confess that I was slightly disappointed to find the game not-terrible, because I expected to completely savage it in this review. Oh, well.

Continue reading Wii Fanboy Review: Castlevania Judgment

Wii Fanboy Review: Castlevania Judgment originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 12:40:00 EST. First we got games like Dead Rising and Lost Planet which launched strong new IPs. Then the announcements started to hit. An Okami port for the Wii. Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. Resident Evil 5 (which, judging by its recent demo, seems to be shaping up nicely). Street Fighter 4. Mega Man 9. Granted, not all of those games are making their way to the Wii, but on the whole they represent good times for gamers. Does it really get much better than that? Maybe it does.

As if the decade-in-the-making Street Fighter 4 wasn't enough to reinvigorate Capcom's fighting game base, the company decided to once again visit its vs. series with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Just launched in Japan, the new fighter already has adventurous message boarders and bloggers scrambling for imports and Twilight hacks, while the rest of us pray nightly for the miracle of resolved licensing issues and a domestic release. In the spirit of Wii gamers in the land of the rising sun playing the gorgeous Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, this week Born for Wii aims to celebrate with a look back at what may be the most legendary game in the vs. series -- Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Again, only one game this week. It's not that Enduro Racer is a bad game, just that it becomes very bland over an extended play session. There isn't much demanded from you, the player, and it's not like the game is incredibly challenging. So, save that $5 or use it toward something better on the Virtual Console.

Against all logic, Shafeek decided to mark his 29th year of life with the complete abandonment of his favorite hobby, video games.

He's getting close to the 365-day finish line, and in the interim he's managed to read more, learn some recipes, travel, run a half-marathon and catalog all his progress on his blog Paused. We recently caught up with Shafeek via an email exchange to find out why he quit, when he's going back and from where he draws his staggering, iron resolve.
Continue reading Joystiq Interview: How to quit games for a year

Joystiq Interview: How to quit games for a year originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Dec 2008 16:47:00 EST. They've launched the Check Mii Out Channel, as well as the Everybody Votes Channel. Sure, they were flops, but it's good to know that Nintendo is at least trying. And Reggie wants us to know that Nintendo has some things coming down the pipe.

"Nintendo has always had a vision on community," he said. "The issue is that we define community differently than our competitors. ... Our consumers do want a sense of community, and we're going to deliver that--but in a way that is unique to Nintendo." Thanks for being so vague, Reg!

Regardless, it's good to know Nintendo is thinking about it. Stacked up against Xbox Live and, even worse, PSN, the Wii is lacking in some very necessary community features. Why don't you all take a guess? What do you think Nintendo has up its sleeve? Personally, we'd appreciate Virtual Console and WiiWare demos and maybe more online multiplayer.

[Via GameDaily; thanks, Mr Khan!]
Nintendo planning greater community features originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Nov 2008 13:45:00 EST. This one is pretty easy and direct. What's your favorite feature of the Wii? Is it the Wiimote and its capabilities? Or, are you a big fan of the Virtual Console or WiiWare? Did backwards compatibility with the GameCube make you fall in love with it? Which one of the Wii's amazing features got you hooked on the console?
Wii Warm Up: Your favorite feature originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Nov 2008 08:00:00 EST. While the demo for Mirror's Edge has been available on the Xbox Live Marketplace since Friday, we know some gamers haven't had a chance to play the demo's unlockable Time Trial Mode. Available when you enter a special code when the game is pre-ordered, the time trial demo allows players to traverse the two sections of the regular demo in a battle of speed against other players online.

Once a player completes a run of the levels included in the time trial subsequent runs will pit players against a red ghost of their best previous time for each section of the level. Beat your previous time and that run becomes the new ghost. Quickly you'll learn that it's both fun and frustrating to fight against yourself. Not down with self destruction? Download ghosts from players atop the leaderboard and learn their tricks and time saving tactics.

We're not claiming to be experts at Mirror's Edge but hopefully our two level runs will show you a thing or two ... remember, you don't always have to follow the preset path.
X3F TV -- Mirror's Edge Time Trial Demo Preview originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 03 Nov 2008 16:45:00 EST. The DSi launched this weekend in Japan, and for those of you who (like this blogger) lacked either the courage, or the enthusiasm (or, uh, the pile of bones) necessary to import the new handheld, we've compiled a few videos so you can at least experience the DSi. An array of walkthroughs and explorations await you after the jump, and you've also got the option of kicking back with this epic walkthrough. For 22 minutes of our time, they better throw in some popcorn or something.
We often take the DS for granted. In such a small plastic shell, it houses many awesome components that come together and provide us with a gaming experience that has no equal. It's got an awesome touch-screen, a built-in microphone and with the aid of a little homebrew, it can be made to do things that we never thought a handheld could do. It's a great little system that we can't lavish with enough praise.

But, if you had one wish, what kind of feature would you give the DS? A third screen? Wireless transmission through your Wii so you can play DS games on your TV? Leather trim? Lay it on us!
DS Daily: Dream feature originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 09:00:00 EST.
Resistance

Warhawk

Call of Duty 3

You know, the DS Daily is a great place to spur discussion and get your DS-obsessed day off on the right foot. But, we feel the need to be a bit selfish today. Instead of writing a love letter to our handheld and postmarking the envelope to our heart, we figured we'd call out one of its many small, but very lovable, features in our daily topic.

Like the NES of old, the DS cart slot is a godsend for us. One of the most annoying things we find with GBA games is the whole forcefully ripping the game out of the slot thing. Perhaps it's just that we're the most macho and manly of men (how you doing, ladies?), but we always feel like we're going to rip something in half when messing with the GBA stuff.

The DS has a nice spring-loaded slot that carefully extracts our games for us. It's one of the features that gets used most for us (right up there with the power button) and considering how much of a glutton our DS is (it does consume a lot of quality gaming), we're thankful the thing hasn't managed to mess up a single cart on us yet.

But what about you all? What features of the DS, no matter how big or small, do you admire? The glossy finish? The durable outer shell that can withstand falling down a flight of stairs without so much as a scratch (DS Fanboy staff tested)?
DS Daily: Underappreciated feature #1,782,365 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 04 Mar 2008 09:00:00 EST.
During the same conference call with Reggie, the notion for online features in Virtual Console games came up. And, like a huge megaton hammer, Reggie came crashing down on the notion with enough force as to completely shatter each and every dream we'd ever had, from ridiculous to surprisingly plausible. It's a shame, because it wouldn't be that hard to give us something so small as online leaderboards.

For those of you looking forward to updates to these past titles, much like the norm on the Xbox Live Arcade, grab a box of Kleenex and sit with us. It's just not going to happen. It's okay, cry. Let it out. We're here with you, doing the same.
Virtual Console: Online features are for suckers originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 11:52:00 EST.
