Two months later, it became known that the trademark renewal was rejected due to Fox's trademark on the TV show. And no, it still doesn't mean a new Killer Instinct game is happening.
Killer Instinct trademark trouble cleared up originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 21:30:00 EST. John Eisendrath of Alias fame is handling writer duties and will serve as executive producer alongside Doug Robinson from studio Happy Madison, and Patrick Bach and Patrick O'Brien from EA.

The adaptation of Battlefield: Bad Company will follow four soldiers transitioning from military life to the private sector, Deadline reports. Their old commanding officer apparently used them to propel the agenda of a shadow unit within the government and now wants them dead to cover his own involvement because that is exactly what the game was about.
Fox is developing a Battlefield: Bad Company TV show originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Oct 2012 19:30:00 EST. It was set to be "a high-end browser-based" title, but a recent tweet from Sutter says that's all changed. Instead, FX and Fox have agreed to "do a REAL game. Console based. Not some slapcrap browser [multiplayer] thing," according to Sutter. He admits it'll take a long time to put together, but since the browser game "felt rushed and unsatisfying," he wants the property treated right.

That's good news for Sons of Anarchy fans ready for a full console experience based on their show. As for us, as long as Ron Perlman's Clay Morrow is playable somehow, we're happy with whatever SAMCRO-based experience we can get.
Sons of Anarchy getting a 'real' console title, rather than browser-based multiplayer originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 11 May 2012 13:15:00 EST. Microsoft's Craig Davison had some surprise news during the company's CES 2012 keynote this evening, bringing out word that Rupert Murdoch's Newscorp is developing an application for the Xbox 360. Several Newscorp content providers will be pushing out news and commentary via the free application, including the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and IGN. Beyond "2012," Davison didn't allow any more specific a date to slip out.
Newscorp app adds Fox, IGN, the Wall Street Journal and Fox News to Xbox 360 in 2012 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 22:42:00 EST. Some of the fine folks who brought you 8-bit versions of Twilight and Dr. Horrible now deliver their most terrifying concept yet: 8-bit Glee. Just in time for tonight's second season premiere, the 8-bit "choose your own adventure" (utilizing the power of YouTube annotations) covers events of the musical (karaoke?) television series' first season.

Although losing before the finale may not be canon to the series, the "game" features Sue and Schuester's verbal sparring, (non-participatory) rhythm game cliches and all that sugary, inspirational stuff that got the show picked up for two more seasons.
Continue reading Glee receives 8-bit YouTube 'game' treatment

Glee receives 8-bit YouTube 'game' treatment originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 12:03:00 EST. This Saturday at midnight (ET), Fox will air a 30-minute short film made from Red Dead Redemption. That's right -- this film was created using in-game assets. And it's not just any old basement machinima -- it's been directed by John Hillcoat (The Road) and, according to Rockstar's description, "reimagines" protagonist John Marston's, uh, redemption, as he pursues that prickly Bill Williamson.

Sounds interesting enough -- just so long as it doesn't interrupt MADtv. That's still on, right?
Red Dead Redemption machinima film airing on Fox this Saturday originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 26 May 2010 07:00:00 EST. Don't want to wait for a Blu-ray disc from Netflix? Wish you could watch an HD program instantly (provided your internet connection is robust enough)? The PlayStation Store will be updated today with HD movies for purchase from all six major studios. Previously, movies for purchase were relegated to SD options, whilst HD movies were available exclusively for rent. According to a press release from SCEA, "PlayStation Network is the first to offer high definition movies for purchase from all of the major movie studios," including 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros.

The HD update will be available today on the PlayStation Store in the US, with "plans to launch soon in the U.K., France, Germany, and Spain." (Sorry, Canada!) While we still prefer owning Blu-ray discs, this downloadable option is yet another way for people to access content.
PlayStation Store expands, offers HD movies for purchase originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 17:45:00 EST. According to the L.A. Times, Missile Command has joined the growing list of old games you probably don't care about that are being shopped in Hollywood as cinematic properties. Following in the footsteps of Joust and Asteroids!, the retro classic is being pitched to several studios by Atari, with Fox reportedly heading up the pack.

We wish we could meet the evil genius who's going around and telling movie studios that the best investments they can make are in the film rights of astoundingly old video games. "No, no, think of it, 'Burgertime: The Movie' You put Kevin James in a chef's hat, cast Jamie Kennedy as a fried egg, you're banking a $50 million three-day opening easy."
When John Riccitiello needs to unwind from a long day as CEO of EA, he does it with dismemberment. That's the word from an interview with Fox Business in which Riccy (No? Well, worth a shot) names Dead Space as his favorite game of the past 12 months. We're assuming he's not talking about the Wii version of the game, since it's a statistical improbability that he owns it.

After his revelation that digital distribution offset retail sluggishness, the publishing boss went on to say it takes him around "50 to 60 hours" to finish a typical game. It prompts the question: Exactly how many times is he planning on fending off the necromorph threat?
Dead Space tops on Riccitiello's list of faves originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Nov 2009 20:00:00 EST. EA is on a movie-making tear thanks to that deal with UTA; it's got The Sims, Dante's Inferno, Army of Two, Dead Space, and Mass Effect. And now, Variety reports that Twentieth Century Fox is signed on to create a CG-animated movie based on EA's make-anything-you-want sim Spore, with Ice Age's Chris Wedge signed on to direct. To put it another way, they're turning the infinite-possibility space of Spore (read: the whole point of the game!) into a distinctly finite feature film. Procedural generation: out the window. Players as creators: nope!

In their place, we'll have a script by the duo of Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, who've written the upcoming films The Princess and the Frog and The Return of King Doug. Blue Sky Studios -- the team behind Ice Age and Robots -- will handle the whole CG-animation part. Keeping watch over their golden goose, EA's Patrick O'Brien and Maxis' Lucy Bradshaw are billed as executive producers.

Of the source material, Wedge said, "From every perspective -- visually, thematically and comedically -- the world of Spore provides the potential to put something truly original on the screen." Bradshaw misses the mark even further saying, "With more than 100 million unique creatures uploaded to our website, it's clear that people are passionate about the game, and it will be exciting to offer a powerful medium like film in order to expand their experience with Spore."
Fox making animated Spore movie; Ice Age director onboard; procedural generation, probably not originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Oct 2009 10:03:00 EST. Don't let that headline confuse you -- though some of UK-based developer Deep Silver's earlier work is truly criminal (namely, Singles: Flirt Up Your Life), it isn't thinking of clever ways to terminate its incarceration. Rather, it's publishing a ZootFly-developed video game adaptation of the television show Prison Break, which -- well, which sounds pretty familiar. Perhaps it's because Brash Entertainment optioned the rights to make such a game shortly before its <strike>untimely</strike> extremely timely demise.

According to a recent press release, the game's story will run parallel to the first season of the show. Players will be placed in the shoes of Tom Paxton, member of the shadowy "Company," who is sent to investigate the events leading to the arrest of the TV series' protagonist, Michael Scofield. Sounds a bit complicated to us. We'll hold out for the video game adaptation of the much more straightforward Prison Prison Break.
Deep Silver planning a Prison Break originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Aug 2009 20:00:00 EST. As fans of the exploits of one Agent 47, seeing Hitman the movie was like watching a really bad movie. But, Fox liked how much money it made (grossed near $100 million in worldwide box office sales, dontchaknow) -- IESB reports the studio has hired on writer Kyle Ward to pen a sequel, with producers Adrian Askarieh, Daniel Alter and Chuck Gordon returning.

Ward is no stranger to adapting games for film, as he recently penned Kane & Lynch, set to star Bruce Willis and begin filming later this year. Hey. Ward, do us a favor? Before you get to work, make sure you watch a decent film about a hitman first, 'kay?
IESB: Writer hired on for sequel to Hitman movie originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 20:00:00 EST. Pushing hard into the series' fourth episode, Fox's "Mental" will be airing its fourth episode this week, featuring "an 8-year-old bipolar boy whose life is consumed by a video game he plays in his head." Oh noes!

According to the show's main character/handsome devil Chris Vance (aka Dr. Jack Gallagher), the child won't stop twitching his hands in an, erm, controllerly fashion and apparently tries killing himself due to "the game in his mind." Dr. Gallagher chooses to approach the child's problem from the most logical angle available and -- no joke -- starts playing the imaginary video game with him. Problem: Solved. We know, we know: For us to approach video game coverage on Fox News and expect anything more than "fair and balanced" reporting (with a heavy dose of bias and spin) is, to say the least, simply asking too much. Things get much worse when a game with as controversial a setting/plot as Six Days in Fallujah falls into the mix. Atomic Games prez Peter Tamte appeared alongside the game's consultant, Capt. Read Omohundro (a gentleman who fought in the actual battle of Fallujah), and Tracey Miller, a woman who lost her son to the fight, on the channel's "Fox & Friends" program (found after the break) recently, to talk about the game and the controversy surrounding it.

Tamte reveals to the show's host that "about two-thirds of the game is complete at this point ... we only have about a third left to go." Atomic Games' challenge now, he says, is to find a new publisher for the game after Konami pulled out of the project in late April. The show ends with a totally fair and balanced comment from the show's host, who says, "Obviously you knew that you might get some blowback on it, 'cause, uh, some people lost their chidren in that battle," before cutting off any more comments and excusing all the show's guests.

Anyone want to place bets on this game never being released? We've got $20 on "Never. Ever ever ever."

[Via Big Download]
Continue reading Atomic Games' Peter Tamte says Six Days in Fallujah 'about two-thirds' complete

Atomic Games' Peter Tamte says Six Days in Fallujah 'about two-thirds' complete originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 17:15:00 EST. Nintendo has a ton of memorable characters. Donkey Kong, Link, Fox McCloud, Samus and, of course, the lovable Mario, just to name a few. We all know which Nintendo game is our favorite, but we were wondering which of Nintendo's huge stable of memorable faces is your favorite? After questioning the validity of such a video from MTV Multiplayer Blog lead Stephen Totilo, and bringing up the video with a contact at Fox; who owns IGN, the video was removed from IGN's site.

"IGN's goal is to show our users all aspects of popular games on the market," an IGN spokesperson told Totilo. "In this case, we crossed a line in how we portrayed some aspects of the game and we've taken this video down."

The video begins with a montage of pole-dancing and lap-dancing and then spirals into violence with multiple shootings of scantily-clad women by Bellic.

Forgetting that such a specifically focused look at that small, and optional, portion of the game was featured in such a way and the irony of a Fox owned outlet creating and releasing the video, we're left wondering what the point was. Doesn't creating a feature that only looks at such a controversial part of GTAIV fuel the fire for Rockstar naysayers? Well, at least we know which video we're likely to see when Fox News tackles the content of Grand Theft Auto IV.
IGN yanks GTAIV hooker sex, killing video originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 May 2008 11:30:00 EST. His friends say that shortly after playing Call of Duty (4, we assume), Hall "just got up and said that he had to go." He was last seen departing his home on a motorcycle, which was later found on the side of a road. The local sheriff's office claims that the man was suffering from hallucinations and flashbacks to his time spent serving in Iraq, where he was injured during a patrol by an exploding bomb, which did tremendous damage to the left side of his body, and reportedly decapitated Hall's best friend in front of his eyes.

It's not exactly confirmed that Call of Duty was behind Hall's disappearance -- after all, we found the story on Fox News, who has a less than objective view of video gaming as a whole. Regardless, we wish Hall's family the best of luck in locating him, though, as Hall's father pointed out, it's tough to find a Marine that doesn't want to be found.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
Ex-Marine goes missing supposedly after Call of Duty triggered flashbacks originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 10 Feb 2008 17:30:00 EST. The crew of Loading.Ready.Run have produced a satire of the news segment for our enjoyment. All the important interview tactics are present, from the gaming supporter being frequently cut off mid-sentence, having his mic turned off, and the host giving loaded questions and descriptions ("full on hardcore porn sex ... with freaky alien chicks"). The acting may not be top-notch, but the snark is.

For a summary of events surrounding Mass Effect so far, including head-turning comments by Jack Thompson, check out this post. Perhaps the most well-versed individual on gaming controversy (by merit of instigating many of them), Jack Thompson has found a way to make the Mass Effect Fox News report more ridiculous by defending the game. Unfortunately, weather.com has not updated the current temperature in Hell, but we'll let you know when we find out.

Responding to the latest press release, Kotaku's Brian Crecente asked Thompson what he thought about the Mass Effect story. Thompson responded, "The guy who shot his mouth off about it had no idea what the Hell he was talking about." (We assume he meant conservative columnist Kevin McCullough and isn't confusing Fox News guest Cooper Lawrence's gender.) Thompson later added, "This contrived controversy is absolutely ridiculous."

To catch you up to speed: just after McCullough apologized for writing about Mass Effect's "virtual orgasmic rape," Fox News' Live Desk with Martha MacCollum ran a similar, ignorant segment on the "Sexbox" (so clever) title that pitted Geoff Keighley against a child care author who openly admitted she never played the game. In what looks to be a standstill, MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo contacted Fox News to follow up on a letter sent to them yesterday by Electronic Arts asking to "correct the record" on the ignorant Mass Effect "sexposé." An unnamed spokesperson replied, "Fox News Channel has extended several invitations to EA through a company representative to appear on 'Live Desk With Martha MacCallum' to discuss 'Mass Effect' and the segment which aired on Monday. We have received no response."

We're wondering if an EA representative coming on MacCallum's show would get the same treatment as Geoff Keighley in the original segment. Also today, Totilo contacted Brown, who reiterated his position from yesterday's letter. Hence, both sides are waiting for other to somehow respond. Is someone going to make the next move (we're doubtful), or is this just going to blow away until the next batch of "sex-ified" games? (Potential candidates include Grand Theft Auto 4, Smash Bros Brawl and Spore.)

Update: GameDaily contacted EA VP of Communications Jeff Brown, who wrote the original letter to Fox News, to see if there was any update on the situation. Said Brown, "Not much to say other than there's no interest here in another debate with an 'expert' that will say anything to sell a book. They need to step up and correct the record." We couldn't agree more (and we can't seem to get the image of Brown's razor sharp fangs out of our minds).
Fox says EA ignored invite to discuss Mass Effect [update] originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 13:30:00 EST. Joystiq readers will recall that Fox News recently ran a story claiming that Mass Effect contains "full digital nudity and sex," a charge that is simply untrue. Electronic Arts, who now owns the Mass Effect property, later contacted Fox via a letter from EA VP of communications Jeff Brown. The letter asked Fox to correct the errors in the segment and also cited more than a bit of hypocrisy by pointing out that many of Fox's own programs, such as Family Guy and The OC, show sexual situations that are just as graphic (and are rated for ages under 17 by the way, unlike Mass Effect).

MTV did a little digging and got their own response from Fox on the matter. A Fox spokesperson, who would not be named, said, "Fox News Channel has extended several invitations to EA through a company representative to appear on 'Live Desk With Martha MacCallum' to discuss 'Mass Effect' and the segment which aired on Monday. We have received no response." So, in other words, Fox can apparently report as much erroneous information as they want, because the party they were defaming wasn't present to defend itself. We'll have to wait and see if EA takes the bait.

Editor's rant: Fox's stance on this matter is complete bunk. The fact remains that they misrepresented Mass Effect, and having EA on to "discuss" the game isn't going to change that. What's called for is a correction of inaccurate reporting. Sorry folks, but as a member of the Joystiq network, it's disgusting. We do our absolute best here to report the facts as they are. Should we find out that we published something that was inaccurate, we fix it and post a correction. That's the way it should be. If we tried to get away with the same things that Fox is trying, our commenting public would skewer us. It's as simple as that. If Fox really wants EA to go on the air, it should be for an apology. Will that happen? We don't think so, but it should.
Fox: EA invited to talk Mass Effect 'SE'XBOX originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 25 Jan 2008 12:00:00 EST. Now, some developers are whispering that the company is set to make a return to gaming <strike>greatness</strike> good enough. Or the now-gen format war. Whatever you want to call it, the battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD has gone on too long, according to multiple studios. Besides this, backers of Blu-ray have a lot to say about PS3 and their upcoming plans to support the Blu-ray format, including a long overdue update allowing to audio and video tracks to run at the same time. Let's listen in.

20th Century Fox's VP Steve Feldstein spoke highly of both Blu-ray and PS3, saying "PS3 is an incredible gaming platform that just happens to be a really great Blu-ray player, too ... Interestingly, there is a lot of crossover between the early adopter, the PlayStation 3 purchaser and the products that are being released early in Blu-ray's life cycle. A lot of the more male-oriented titles that we're releasing, the sales numbers indicate they're being played on PS3s."

Lionsgate Home Entertainment VP Ron Schwartz added his two cents as well. "I think PS3 is going to be a gift people are going to be giving this Christmas ... The great thing about PS3 is that it's a multipurpose media device that can play in the living room without the purchase of any additional components."

Even Gordon Ho of Walt Disney Studios put the studio's support squarely in the Blu. "High definition on PS3 is really pretty simple ... If you're going to hook up your PS3, take advantage of the movie capabilities." He also said that movie studios need to take the initiative to really educate consumers about Blu-ray and the PS3's ability to play them excellently. We're glad to see more studio heads coming out and voicing support. Not that the HD DVD exclusive studios wouldn't say the exact opposite, but at least there are clear voices on both sides of the fence.
Hollywood studios voice Blu-ray, PS3 support originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 20:00:00 EST. Take the Cashin' In segment presented above, for example, which brings on "anti-violence activist" Jack Thompson to discuss the Manhunt 2 ban in Europe and the debate as to whether it should be banned here in the States. Jack claims that there are different acts of fraud going on with the game and the ESRB (o ... kay?) and that the game surely didn't have enough time to be altered from an "Adult's Only" to "Mature" rating. Last time we checked, Jack wasn't a game designer or programmer, so we're sure he has no clue when it comes to game development (or much else, for that matter).

The rest of the video is pretty much your usual Fox News fair, with each side yelling at each other and no resolution to the conflict made, so if it's your thing, hit up the video above.

[Via Go Nintendo]
Jack Thompson shows how smart he is on Fox News originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 Oct 2007 11:15:00 EST. As if we didn't hate Fox in Smash Bros. enough, we now learn the guy's Final Smash has him piloting a huge tank. You should be familiar with the tank's arsenal of maneuvers, including hovering, doing barrel rolls and firing large bursts from its cannon. Seriously, it looks like too good of a Final Smash. Fox gets that much cheaper, we suppose.

The other half of the update deals with shielding and dodging. Dodging will allow you to perform backflips and sidesteps, even rolling to your opponent's back, to get your character out of danger and find your opponent surprised and vulnerable.

Read - Shielding and Dodging
Read - Fox Final Smash
Dojo update: Fox Final Smash and some hot dodging action originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Oct 2007 17:08:00 EST. The high-definition format war was due for a shakeup. Following yesterday's news that Paramount will be ditching Blu-ray in favor of HD-DVD exclusivity, Twentieth Century Fox and MGM (whose video releases are, not coincidentally, handled by Fox) pledged more support for the Sony-backed Blu-ray, citing the format's dominant sales compared to HD-DVD.

That pledge totals 29 new Blu-ray releases by the end of the year, which breaks down as follows:

Six new films from Fox, including Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and Live Free or Die Hard, that will be released day and date with the DVD version.

Four day and date (for U.S. only) Blu-ray and DVD new releases from MGM

19 titles deemed "must have on Blu-ray" from the two studios' collection

Additionally, Fox has promised to bring television drama Prison Break to Blu-ray. According to the announcement (via GameDaily), Fox said it intends to release "at least one state-of-the-art title per month featuring numerous BD 'firsts.'"

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
Fox, MGM pledge more support for Blu-ray originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 13:25:00 EST. The HD wars are stronger than ever. In a statement clearly triggered by Paramount and Dreamworks' surprising move to HD DVD exclusivity, Fox and MGM are both pledging increased exclusive support for Blu-ray. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Live Free or Die Hard, and Fox's first-ever TV release on BD, Prison Break, have all been announced for release on Blu-ray.

These discs won't skimp on exclusive features. According to GameDaily BIZ, a "vast majority" of its movies will arrive on 50 GB dual-layer discs, with BD-J interactivity and Blu-ray exclusive HD bonus materials -- something that has been sorely lacking on most BDMV releases.

So why support Blu-ray over HD DVD? It's simple: better sales. "Given that Blu-ray has consistently outsold HD DVD all year, and this is the case for any titles released by any studio in both formats, we believe that the time is right for us to accelerate our activities and help convert the nearly 60 million high definition households worldwide into Blu-ray households," commented Mike Dunn, President Worldwide, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Fox and MGM expand Blu-ray exclusive offerings originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 11:45:00 EST. After some speculation last week, Sierra has finally let us in on some of the details behind their upcoming PSP game based on this winter's Aliens vs. Predator movie. Most importantly, the new game is being developed by Rebellion, best known for their well received 1995 Jaguar game, Aliens vs. Predator, and its similarly named (and even better received) PC successor.

Unlike those outings, this PSP release will be a "third-person action-adventure" (that's okay, since we know how FPSs on the PSP invariably turn out), putting you in the giant slimy boots of a lone Predator, with all the accompanying goodies. These, of course, include Super Heat Vision[TM], Invisi-Cloak Tech[TM], and Ultra Wrist Triangle Red Lasers[TM], always good for a chuckle ... oh, and for killing Aliens and future governors. Though the press release doesn't say, we'll presume the target for this game is this holiday, alongside the movie.

Gallery: Alien vs. Predator (PSP)

Rebellion making PSP Aliens vs. Predator game, screens inside originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Aug 2007 19:10:00 EST. His new title is just a fancy way of saying he'll oversee video game projects and develop ways to make cash through e-commerce. He will oversee things like The Simpsons Game over at EA along with the Alien games over at Sega -- and probably a bunch of other Fox related titles we'll see in the near future.

So, with Kline's existence having previously been in the gaming space over at Ubisoft, we can hope he won't be the typical suit who'll keep the chain of bad video games based on movies going. We hope Kline just keeps a tight leash on the Alien games being developed by Sega. We need more quality Alien games like Alien vs. Predator and less ... well, almost everything else.
Former Ubisoft VP helping develop Fox gaming brand originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Jul 2007 19:15:00 EST. A trailer for the film adaptation of Hitman will be shown in the previews preceding Live Free or Die Hard, opening this Wednesday, according to reputable film site ComingSoon.net. The movie, starring Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47, began filming on March 27.

No official confirmation has been made from distributor Twentieth Century Fox, but the action-packed Bruce Willis vehicle would be a perfect fit for the trailer and is also distributed by Fox. If true, look for the teaser to find its way on the internet likely by Wednesday afternoon.
Rumor: Hitman film trailer premiering with Die Hard originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Jun 2007 18:25:00 EST. Another Dojo update hits, bringing us a better look at newcomer Wario and resident cheap jerk Fox. We got an intimate look at Pikachu's Final Smash the other day, but with Fox and his reflection, and Wario with his gigantic bite, we think Pokemon's resident rat thing is going to have a tough time in this installment in the franchise.

As usual, you can check out some images of Wario and Fox in action through our gallery below.

Read - Fox move list
Read - Wario bio
Dojo update: Wario and Fox originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Jun 2007 12:53:00 EST. If the rumor turns out to be correct though, it brings up an interesting point -- Fox is exclusive to Blu-ray and they'd be the ones publishing the title when it was released. Also, Microsoft has come out previously and explicitly said that they will not be releasing a Blu-ray add-on for the 360, leaving Xbox 360 owners high and dry if they want to watch the HD treatment of their ambrosia.

So will PlayStation 3 owners have exclusive access to Halo the movie when it is released? The irony would be so delicious that Peter Moore's head would explode -- but things are a little too early to be sure about anything when it comes to the Halo movie. And anyway, regardless of which format it is released, Microsoft is going to find someway to get a HD version to 360 owners. Even if it means caving in and admitting Blu-ray dominance.

Update: Okay, so Fox turns out to be involved with the Halo videogame, not the movie. The Halo movie is back to hanging out with Duke Nukem Forever in the 'We're never coming out' club.
Halo on the PS3, not the 360 (thanks to Blu-ray) [UPDATE] originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 18:30:00 EST. And now for something completely different. Though the corpse of the Halo film project once co-produced by Fox and Universal is still warm, that hasn't stopped Fox from looting the grave -- just six months after its untimely demise -- for Master Chief's lucrative MJOLNIR exoskeleton and all sorts of other tchotchkes they know we'll want. You see, they haven't decided to go back to making the movie, but they have signed a deal to become the primary licensor for Halo merchandise, and what timing!

With action figures, and branded controllers arriving just in time for the September 25th launch, Fox is poised to capitalize on all that hype with "a broad array of products, from books to apparel to collectible merchandise." But don't expect it to stop there! Elie Dekel, exec VP of domestic licensing for Fox, "said he's confident his division can continue to sell licensed products in the next few years until a fourth Halo game comes out." Or maybe, if they sell enough Master Chief underwear, they'll just keep going until the movie comes out. Eventually.

[Via X3F]
Fox will handle Halo licensing (yeah, just licensing) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 15:28:00 EST. But such news has been twisted as some media outlets picked up the story and are instead reporting that this confirms the once stalled Halo movie is back in production. Sorry folks, as much as we'd love to hear news that our Halo movie dreams are coming back to life the Variety article makes no mention of such resurrection. To be fair, the article does mention the Halo movie when setting up the story and talking about Microsoft and FOX's previous relationship ... but that's it. We know, it hurts us too.

So, you can expect a crazy amount of licensed Halo goodies this Fall, but don't bank on the Halo movie going into production anytime soon. And if you think about it, getting a Halo 3 lunchbox is just as good as a blockbuster movie ... right guys? Right?

[Thanks Nitin, Via Filmwad]
It's no movie, but FOX will handle Halo 3 licensing originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 19 Jun 2007 10:30:00 EST. Tax season. It seems like every year, tax fever sweeps across the nation and people just can't get enough of doing their taxes. But you know, they've never made a movie about taxes. Do you know why? Because it would be eyeball murder. Now, could somebody please pass the lesson along to 20th Century Fox? They've just picked up the movie rights to The Sims.

Now, is this just a crass ploy to get up in the Matchbox 20 money that The Sims series pulls down? No, not according to Sims Studio head Rod Humble. He says it's all about the story. "The Sims has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it's like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it," he said. "Given that that's an old story, you can imagine how easily that would translate to traditional story telling." Gross, now we've got synergy all over our keyboard.

Oh, lest we forget the best part, a guy who helped write Scary Movie 3 is writing the screenplay. So, yeah, enjoy. We're going to go kiss Uwe Boll on the mouth.
In celebration of the upcoming Simpsons movie, Microsoft has created 100 limited edition Simpsons Xbox 360s. Yup, there are only 100 of these babies in the entire universe. How do you get your hands on one? Well, we don't really know. According to the press release, they will be given away "through a series of special events and promotions." May we make a suggestion? Donut eating contest for the win. The special editions should be given away prior to the movie this july, but right now that's all we know.

By the way, if you haven't heard, the game (which is unrelated to the film) is actually looking pretty good. Anyone interested in scoring one of the limited edition 360s to play it on?

[Via Joystiq]
Limited edition Simpsons Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 May 2007 14:30:00 EST. What is known is that Nintendo has issued an updated version of StarFox 64. What isn't known is what it does.

NeoGAFfer Nuclear Muffin (judging by the name, a level-headed character) reported that after downloading the update this morning, he found the game slowing down in the same way the original Nintendo 64 version. Again, no idea if this is true, or if it's a delusion created by someone trying to find an effect of this update, but it's terrifying if true.

Normally, we're all about accurate presentation of emulated games, but we have no problem with Nintendo fixing the resolution and speed of N64 games, because they totally need it. We really hope they haven't decided to unfix it.
Rumor: Starfox 64 update restores historically accurate slowdown? originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Apr 2007 21:00:00 EST.
