The game sees players doing their best to ascend a mysterious tower. "The internals of the tower are ever-changing," according to the team, and the game will be different every time, challenging players to "climb as high as possible."<br /><br />Levels will be procedurally generated, though Hitbox designer Woodley Nye promises that they won't be merely random, and instead be "generated with intention." As an example, after creating an intense combat scenario, the generator "might think to then generate a scene with lower intensity to better control the emotional arc of the experience."<br /><br />Furthermore, while the game has a fantasy setting, Hitbox is promising creatures and items outside of the familiar "goblins and elves" tropes we're all used to. Instead, enemies and items will be "strange and unexpected." Gameplay mechanics too, will be different than standard FPS games, using tricks inspired by <em>Dustforce</em>, such as jumping and sliding on walls.<br /><br />Players will be able to generate random Spires for offline play, while the community will fight to dominate the leaderboards via a shared weekly Spire. Nye didn't offer a release window, saying only that Hitbox is "well into the development of <em>Spire</em>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/17/dustforce-devs-announce-fps-spire/">Dustforce devs announce FPS 'Spire'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 17 Jan 2013 17:20:00 EST. A more pedantic guide would have dragged you through a clockwork jungle, crushing the chaos that lies beneath brilliant moments of discovery and sudden warfare. What you get on the pirate-infested island paradise of <em>Far Cry 3</em>, with great relief, is a tug in the right direction, and tacit approval when you decide to frolic and fling grenades at goats.<br /><br />Goats, by the way, are not to be trusted. They seem like innocent targets in their grass-chewing congregations, but there's evidence of an assassination plot burgeoning between the billies. One led me across the road, just as an enemy patrol car came rattling around the bend. I pursued another through a frenzy of gunshots and screams, amidst mercenaries and a ... <em>collective noun</em> of Komodo dragons. And the most evil of all goats had his revenge in death, sliding down the hill while I bent down and followed, trying to liberate his skin for a carrying bag. That's when I fell off the cliff, chasing a slippery corpse. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-12-4-12/">Far Cry 3 (12/4/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-12-4-12/#5479366"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/buckhousenologogold_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-12-4-12/#5479367"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/cenotekicknologogold_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-12-4-12/#5479368"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/cenotenologogold_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-12-4-12/#5479369"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/fc3scra1201_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-12-4-12/#5479370"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/12/fc3scra1203_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/04/far-cry-3-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Far Cry 3 review: The slippery corpse</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/04/far-cry-3-review/">Far Cry 3 review: The slippery corpse</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 04 Dec 2012 10:00:00 EST. "But at 30 FPS there's a technique where you take advantage of the brain's ability to fill in the blanks. So even though you have it running at 30 FPS, you create the motions and the poses in such a way that the brain will naturally fill in what would have been the extra frames."<br /><br />Of course 60 FPS "would be better," Itsuno says, but <em>DmC</em>'s button-response design and visual style make 30 FPS just as good. <em>DmC </em>features living, moving environments that would have been forced static if Capcom and Ninja Theory pushed for 60 FPS on consoles, Ninja Theory technical art director Stuart Adcock adds. Remember, the PC version of <em>DmC </em>does run at 60 FPS.<br /><br />Previous games in the series, such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/devil-may-cry-4"><em>Devil May Cry 4</em></a>, run at 60 FPS on consoles. <em>Devil May Cry 4 </em>was built with Capcom's MT Framework engine, while <em>DmC </em>uses Epic's Unreal Engine 3. This engine swap contributes to the 30 FPS cap, Adcock says: "We were limited a little bit by the engine capabilities."<br /><br />"We did a lot of work trying to simulate the effects of fluid motion even at 30. We simulated more motion blur and made sure the animations had solid in-betweens and nothing that might feel too jerky," Adcock says.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/05/why-dmc-runs-30-fps-on-consoles-according-to-capcom/">Why DmC runs 30 FPS on consoles, according to Capcom</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 14:00:00 EST. Infinite Game Publishing and Piranha Games have announced that <em>MWO</em> is <a href="http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/58481-open-beta-starts-next-week/">headed into an open beta</a> next week.<br /><br />Players interested in playing can sign up on the <a href="http://mwomercs.com/">MechWarrior Online website</a> to reserve a name right now, and anyone looking to spend a little money on the free-to-play shooter (based, of course, on the tabletop strategy game) can <a href="http://mwomercs.com/founders">join the Founders' Program</a>, which offers various tiers of premium rewards. The Founders' Program will finish up on October 14, with the open beta following soon after.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/10/mechwarrior-online-founders-program-ends-soon-open-beta-next-w/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MechWarrior Online Founders' Program ends soon, open beta next week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/10/mechwarrior-online-founders-program-ends-soon-open-beta-next-w/">MechWarrior Online Founders' Program ends soon, open beta next week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Oct 2012 23:00:00 EST. Had <em>Total Recall</em> and <em>The Bourne Legacy</em> stuck to a shared release date in theaters, as originally scheduled, you'd have become a seated participant in an extravagant and mutually destructive showdown. Between Colin Farrell and Jeremy Renner, which pouting action star would have gotten your twelve bucks and two hours?<br /><br />If you're a movie buff, you might not even hesitate spending time and money on both consecutively. But what happens when you bump the price up to $60, and extend the temporal investment to something between 8 and 80 hours? Now you see the dilemma squeezed in-between this holiday's most anticipated shooters, <a href="http://jjoystiq.com/game/halo-4"><em>Halo 4</em></a> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-black-ops-2"><em>Call of Duty: Black Ops 2</em></a>, and all of a sudden one week doesn't seem like much of a buffer at all.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/07/a-week-between-blockbusters/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Week Between Blockbusters</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/07/a-week-between-blockbusters/">A Week Between Blockbusters</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2012 20:30:00 EST. The collaboration and the project itself is now completely dead, Notch confirms, following <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/26/mojang-cans-collaboration-with-unannounced-studio/">today</a>'s news of a mysterious cancellation.<br /><br />The FPS was killed off in the prototype stage, not because it wasn't turning into a good game, but because Mojang "did not want more external dependencies," Notch says. "The success of <em>Minecraft </em>meant we could focus on projects fully owned by us."<br /><br />Future collaborations aren't out of the question for Mojang, as long as they're "not to make money. If there are other reasons to collaborate, maybe!"<br /><br />Here's a reason: Portal guns in <em>Minecraft</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/26/canceled-mojang-project-was-a-first-person-shooter/">Canceled Mojang project was a first-person shooter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jul 2012 17:30:00 EST. The same listing looks for "Experience designing fighting and/or action adventure games for PS3 or Xbox 360 with at least 2 shipped AAA titles."<br /><br />The primary takeaway from these job listings is that Vigil is likely working on an unnannounced first-person shooter - probably on consoles, and with adventure elements. But we'd also like to point out that this is an opportunity for some of our game developer readers to come live in lovely Austin, Texas.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/26/darksiders-studio-hiring-devs-with-fps-experience/">Darksiders studio hiring devs with FPS experience</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 Jul 2012 10:05:00 EST. One job description, that of the Senior Core Engineer position, listed the task of implementing "features and optimizations on current and Future Generation console and PC hardware." Levels are reset after each round, of course. "Voxel engines allow us complete and total environmental destruction," Exato writes on its <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/630555339/guncraft-voxel-based-first-person-shooter">Kickstarter</a> page. "But wait, that's not all! We also have complete and total environmental CONSTRUCTION."<br /><br /><em>Guncraft </em>is looking to release a PC beta in March, with a full launch in June. Exato is also set on releasing <em>Guncraft </em>on XBLIG eventually. To finish its project, the Guncraft team is asking for $16,000 via Kickstarter -- they're on their way, but could use some love. If you're intrigued, head on over and support <em>Guncraft </em><a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/630555339/guncraft-voxel-based-first-person-shooter">here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/26/guncraft-is-minecraft-with-guns-or-call-of-duty-with-blocks-pic/">Guncraft is Minecraft with guns or Call of Duty with blocks, pick one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 26 Feb 2012 12:30:00 EST. EA has announced an early 2012 release date for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/syndicate"><em>Syndicate</em></a>, an action-oriented reboot of Bullfrog's sci-fi classic. It's set to arrive on February 21 in North America, and February 24 in Europe. Barring any delays, that makes for two Q1 shooters that have divorced themselves from <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/xcom">tactical, isometric origins</a>.<br />
<br />
Developed by <em>Chronicles of Riddick</em> studio Starbreeze, the new <em>S</em><em>yndicate</em> thrusts you into the year 2069 as a "prototype agent" for Eurocom, a large corporation with a nice armory. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/according-to-job-listings-neversoft-hiring-for-fps/"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/neversoftlogo692010_530x250.jpg" style="width: 530px; height: 249px;" /></a></div>
It would seem Neversoft is currently developing a first-person-shooter. The longtime <em>Tony Hawk Pro Skater</em> and <em>Guitar Hero</em> developer is currently recruiting a variety of <a href="http://www.neversoft.com/site/hiring.html">positions</a> that specify "FPS" in the title. Could the project for which it's hiring be the same "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/09/job-listing-says-neversoft-working-on-new-action-shooter/">action shooter</a>" we heard about last year?<br />
<br />
Neversoft's job listings page calls for engineers, designers, artists, network programmers, multiplayer experts, and even a Windows PC platform lead. Since Neversoft is hiring for so many positions, we're inclined to think that this project is still fairly early in development.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/according-to-job-listings-neversoft-hiring-for-fps/">Neversoft hiring for FPS, according to job listings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 15:45:00 EST. On top of last month's outed job listing for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/22/lucasarts-job-listing-hints-at-in-development-open-world-rpg/">an open-world RPG</a>, LucasArts is now hiring for a first-person shooter, an aerial combat game and an action/adventure game. <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6334433/lucasarts-hiring-for-fps-aerial-combat-games">GameSpot</a> noticed the listings, which call for <a href="https://www.lucasfilm.apply2jobs.com/ProfExt/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&amp;RID=3497&amp;CurrentPage=2">a level designer for a FPS title</a>, a <a href="https://www.lucasfilm.apply2jobs.com/ProfExt/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&amp;RID=3194&amp;CurrentPage=3">senior gameplay engineer for the aerial combat game</a> and <a href="https://www.lucasfilm.apply2jobs.com/ProfExt/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&amp;RID=3169&amp;CurrentPage=2">a producer for an action/adventure title</a>. LucasArts sure seems busy these days!<br />
<br />
The aerial combat game seems like a no-brainer -- LucasArts has a stable of <em>Star Wars</em> aerial combat games it could pull from, so that's our guess considering the position emphasizes a familiarity with "space-based shooters." The other two require even more speculation ... and we certainly wouldn't mind seeing another <em><a href="http://joystiq.search.aol.com/search?q=star+wars+republic+commando&amp;invocationType=wl-joystiq">Republic Commando</a> </em>game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/15/lucasarts-hiring-for-fps-aerial-combat-action-adventure-games/">LucasArts hiring for FPS, aerial combat, action/adventure games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Sep 2011 14:25:00 EST. If you'd like to shoot many robots, but in a game that's not <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/shoot-many-robots">actually</a> called that, we've got good news. Your simultaneous dislike of blas&eacute; titles and society's robotic oppressors will find an outlet on September 13, when <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/hard-reset"><em>Hard Reset</em></a> launches for $30. There's a good chance that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/firefall"><em>Firefall</em></a> is going to be your absolute, undeniable jam. It's just one of those combinations of features and ideas that should apply to at least (but probably more than) one of your sensibilities: It has class-based shooting, customizable loadouts, loot, strategy, a persistent world, character creation and a focus on cooperative, Player vs. Environment gameplay.<br />
<br />
Any of those tickle your fancy? They tickle mine. They tickle all of my fancies <em>simultaneously</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/29/firefall-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Firefall preview: Something for everyone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/29/firefall-preview/">Firefall preview: Something for everyone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 29 Aug 2011 09:00:00 EST. <strong>Update:</strong> Looks like we didn't have to wait too long at all for confirmation of the project: Valve and Seattle-based developer Hidden Path Entertainment just distributed a press release announcing <em>Counter-Strike: Global Offensive</em>, an updated and expanded version of the seminal team-based shooter.<br />
<br />
Slated for an early 2012 release on XBLA, PSN and Steam, the downloadable title will add "new maps, characters, and weapons," renovated versions of classic maps (what's up, de_dust) and a plethora of new modes, matchmaking options, leaderboards and other modern shooter mainstays. Best of all, it'll be playable later this month at PAX Prime. Check out the full press release after the jump!<br />
<br />
Original post: A heaping pile of evidence is growing in support of a future installment in the thoroughly-played <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/counter-strike-source"><em>Counter-Strike</em></a> universe -- this one subtitled <em>Global Offensive</em>. The most promising tidbit is the Facebook page of anti-cheat gaming community <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ESEA.net">ESEA</a>, which revealed the name of the game, and promised more info later this morning. The post was preceded by an image of ESEA's Craig Levine at the offices of Valve. (You can tell it's legit, because hey, <em>there's a giant valve</em>.)<br />
<br />
Valve designer Jess Cliffe corroborated the title on the <a href="http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=24307076">Steam forums</a>, correcting an earlier poster who labeled the game "Global Operation." Also, Electronic Sports League manager Bastian Vieser <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/bastianveiser/status/101847775192432640">claimed on Twitter</a> that he "Just spend [sic] all day playing the new Counterstrike Global Offensive" at Valve's HQ. It certainly seems like a real thing -- now there's just the small matter of whether it's a port, expansion or an entirely new game altogether. We've got our freakishly elongated fingers crossed for the latter.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/rumor-new-counter-strike-project-in-the-works-titled-global-of/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Counter-Strike: Global Offensive coming to XBLA, PSN and Steam early 2012 [update]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/12/rumor-new-counter-strike-project-in-the-works-titled-global-of/">Counter-Strike: Global Offensive coming to XBLA, PSN and Steam early 2012 [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 12 Aug 2011 12:56:00 EST. In the future, robots will excel at cooking breakfast, mowing the terraformed lawn and driving cabs on Mars. Today, they're designed to be destroyed without consequence or guilt. If you have to shoot something in a lineup of video game villains, the robot is less messy than the nazi and just a tad more relatable than the extraterrestrial insect.<br />
<br />
It's in a shooter's best interests, then, that you prevent the artificial near-citizens of the future, as envisioned by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/hard-reset"><em>Hard Reset</em></a>, from overthrowing authority and hastening their own evolution. You enter the city of Bezoar (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bezoar">eww</a>), a neon-lit pastiche of flying billboards, talking storefronts and <em>Blade Runner</em>'s Los Angeles grit, with a straightforward mission in mind. Cover the streets in smoldering servos and protect a database of digitized human personalities. Let's file this preservation and attempted theft of what is easily humanity's least useful component under "suspension of disbelief," okay?<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hard-reset-pc/">Hard Reset (PC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hard-reset-pc/#4360154"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/hardreset0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hard-reset-pc/#4360155"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/hardreset1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hard-reset-pc/#4360156"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/hardreset3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hard-reset-pc/#4360157"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/hardreset4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/hard-reset-pc/#4360158"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/08/hardreset5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/11/hard-reset-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hard Reset preview: Baudville</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/11/hard-reset-preview/">Hard Reset preview: Baudville</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 17:00:00 EST. Tripwire Interactive has announced a delay for its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/06/red-orchestra-heroes-of-stalingrad-announced/">upcoming World War 2-themed first person shooter</a> sequel <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/red-orchestra-2-heroes-of-stalingrad"><em>Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad</em></a>. The game, which is a sequel to a title that was originally based on an Unreal Tournament mod, was set to come out at the end of this month, but will instead arrive on September 13. Tripwire says it's using the extra two weeks to "get it right and add the extra polish the game (and the players) deserve."<br />
<br />
We're not sure exactly what needs to be tuned up or what notes they want to hit, but we'd imagine the situation at Tripwire HQ lately must sound <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfSH1ezevjM">a little something like this</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/08/red-orchestra-2-delayed-for-a-little-extra-tuning/">Red Orchestra 2 delayed for a little extra tuning</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 22:15:00 EST. You've been waiting to get your mitts on the source code to <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/doom-3"><em>Doom 3</em></a> (how do you type with those mitts on?), and your time is almost here. First announced at <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/08/14/quakecon-2009-john-carmack-keynote-highlights/">QuakeCon 2009</a>, John Carmack confirmed plans today, during QuakeCon <em>2011</em>, to release the source to the 2004 FPS following the launch of id's new hotness, <em>Rage</em>. The code will be released this year.<br />
<br />
According to VG247's liveblog, Carmack said in his keynote that these releases of Id code are a "challenge to other developers," and are beneficial to both Id and "the community." They're also a QuakeCon tradition -- last year, <em>Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory</em> and <em>Return to Castle Wolfenstein</em> were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/13/wolfenstein-enemy-territory-and-return-to-castle-wolfenstein-so/">opened up</a>.<br />
<br />
In related news, the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sale/quakecon_doom">Doom &amp; Quake Complete Pack</a> is on sale on Steam right now for $30.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/04/doom-3-source-code-going-free-after-rage-launch/">Doom 3 source code going free after Rage launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. Activision's been hesitant to talk about whether its upcoming soon-to-be-blockbuster <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3"><em>Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3</em></a> would also bust blocks on the Wii -- despite the fact that the franchise's last outing, <em>Black Ops</em>, appeared on the console. During today's investor's call, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg brought said hesitation to an end, explaining, "We're pleased to have recently confirmed that we will release a <em>Modern Warfare 3</em> Wii SKU this year, so as not to leave any of the community out of the excitement."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/03/modern-warfare-3-will-also-blow-up-the-world-on-wii/">Modern Warfare 3 will also blow up the world on Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 03 Aug 2011 17:27:00 EST. Considering Flying Wild Hog is made up of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/13/flying-wild-hogs-first-game-hard-reset-shooting-to-pc-in-sept/">ex-<em>Bulletstorm</em>, <em>Sniper</em> and <em>Witcher 2</em> staff</a>, it's not a surprise to see its first effort so packed with big guns. The nifty thing about <em>Hard Reset</em>, though, is that the big guns are hardly typical.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/01/hard-reset-trailer-gives-us-our-first-glimpse-at-gameplay/">Hard Reset trailer gives us our first glimpse at gameplay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 01 Aug 2011 18:00:00 EST. Polish developer Flying Wild Hog -- comprised of former <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bulletstorm"><em>Bulletstorm</em></a>, <em>Sniper</em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-witcher-2"><em>The Witcher 2</em></a> staff -- has revealed that its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/30/polish-dev-flying-wild-hog-working-on-unnamed-pc-shooter/">previously announced shooter</a> will be titled <em>Hard Reset</em>, and it will debut in just two months. A cyberpunk FPS set in a "haunting, dystopian future, with humanity on the brink of extinction," <em>Hard Reset</em> tells the story of Major Fletcher, a veteran who must defend humanity's last remaining city, Bezoar, from "the robotic hordes that aim to annihilate mankind."<br />
<br />
The first trailer for the game has been released, which you can see embedded above. <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/07/13/exclusive%E2%80%94flying-wild-hog-announces-cyberpunk-fps-hard-reset/">PC Gamer</a> is set to have a hands-on preview in its next issue. <em>"With sales data, it seems like *customers* love Duke. I guess sometimes we want greasy hamburgers instead of caviar..." </em>- <em>Gearbox CEO <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/DuvalMagic/status/81509576322727937">Randy Pitchford</a></em><br />
<br />
If Pitchford is right, the upcoming Mac version of <em>Duke Nukem Forever</em>, being readied for August by Aspyr Media, may require a marketing strategy for different tastes. A Hunch survey published a few months ago suggested that Mac users are 80 percent more likely than PC owners to <a href="http://blog.hunch.com/?p=45344">be vegetarian</a>.<br />
<br />
Before you spit out your <em>San Pellegrino Limonata</em> at the mere thought of playing Duke's repeatedly reheated entree on your Mac, let Aspyr President Michael Rogers remind you of the game's pedigree ingredients. "Duke Nukem Forever represents many of the best aspects of gaming: shooting aliens, saving ladies in distress, and great tag-lines," he says. Well, if pain cake is anything like garrote cake, it's as vegi-friendly as it is deadly.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/27/duke-nukem-forever-becomes-a-big-mac-game-in-august/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Duke Nukem Forever becomes a big Mac game in August</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/27/duke-nukem-forever-becomes-a-big-mac-game-in-august/">Duke Nukem Forever becomes a big Mac game in August</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 16:20:00 EST. The added maps are: 5th Avenue, Apartments, Chasm, Plaza and Prism. Players' arsenals have been expanded with the long-range FY71 assault rifle and smoke grenades. This is the second multiplayer DLC for the game, which received the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/crysis-2-getting-retaliation-dlc-on-may-17/">Retaliation Pack</a> -- adding four new maps -- last month.<br />
<br />
Look for the the Decimation Pack to arrive on PS3 June 28. See the new maps and weapons in action after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/psa-crysis-2-decimation-pack-dlc-out-now-for-xbox-360-pc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSA: Crysis 2 'Decimation Pack' DLC out now for Xbox 360, PC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/psa-crysis-2-decimation-pack-dlc-out-now-for-xbox-360-pc/">PSA: Crysis 2 'Decimation Pack' DLC out now for Xbox 360, PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 15:16:00 EST. I'm going to take the mic here for a moment, readers, and tell you something personally: It has been fascinating to watch the development of Codemasters' FPS <em>Bodycount</em>. I originally posted <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/codemasters-working-on-new-fps-from-creator-of-black/">the game's unofficial announcement</a> early last year, saw a preview and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/18/bodycounts-stuart-black-and-his-inspirations/">talked to creator Stuart Black</a> at last year's E3, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/bodycount-preview/">saw the game in action</a> after Black left the project and, finally, got to see and play it last week at this year's E3 conference.<br />
<br />
Long story short, I've basically had a front row seat on the development of this one, and it's been very interesting to watch it develop over the past 16 months. Black's original vision was not much more than just a demo level, a slick future shooter with a snappy female voice feeding orders in your ear. And from preview to preview, that vision has been prodded and poked by other developers, growing up into the game <em>Bodycount</em> has become.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, much of what appealed in the initial vision has gotten a little muddied along the way. Some elements of that early demo are still in there (and there's a whole lot more besides), but <em>Bodycount</em>'s gone from a lot of unique potential to a much more mundane reality.<br />

The year was 1997, and I'd just begun writing about video games professionally. Like most of my fellow gamers, I was pretty excited when 3D Realms announced that it was working on a sequel to <em>Duke Nukem 3D</em>, the runaway PC hit that it had released just a year before. At my first E3, a year later, I saw the game running for the first time. Now, just as my 14th E3 has come and gone, I'm sitting at my computer having finally played the finished <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/duke-nukem-forever"><em>Duke Nukem Forever</em></a>. Yet it feels like I'm still in 1998.<br />
<br />
That's because <em>DNF</em> is, for better but <em>mostly</em> worse, perpetually stuck in the late 1990s. For all the delaying, the stalling, the drama surrounding the game, it's tough to say if any part of it has actually benefitted from the more than a decade of development. What has, at long last, been committed to a disc and placed into a box might have been alright a dozen years ago, but by today's standards it simply doesn't hold up.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/">Duke Nukem Forever (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211705"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3come-get-some_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211706"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3dam_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211707"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3forklift_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211708"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3gonna-stomp-you_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211709"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3minecave_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review-fail-to-the-king-baby/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Duke Nukem Forever review: Fail to the King, Baby</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review-fail-to-the-king-baby/">Duke Nukem Forever review: Fail to the King, Baby</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 12:30:00 EST. Sam isn't a man of change. You won't find him giving Yoga a whirl and you probably won't find him taking a leap on a VitaBoost passion-mango smoothie or whatever. And it shows in <em>Serious Sam 3: BFE</em> -- a case where minimal change actually ends up being a good thing.<br />
<br />
I was able to check out two different levels here at E3: the first level, a tutorial stage set in the streets of Cairo that eases you into the action, and a later, more traditional <em>Serious Sam </em>stage set amongst some ruins in a desert.<br />

Okay, okay, we've had a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2011">pretty exciting day</a>. But <em>Far Cry 3</em>? That's pretty damn exciting. The game was revealed during Ubisoft's E3 press conference this afternoon, featuring a thrilling few minutes of murderous gameplay, and confirming a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/far-cry-3">mess of hints</a> that the game is in development.<br />
<br />
The gameplay demo kicked off with the game's main character being thrown down a murder well, attached to a rock, and presumed dead. Rather than simply giving in, he struggles free, only to fight through a couple dozen more lackeys on his way to hijacking a helicopter. On the way, he sneaks up and shanks a handful of bad dudes, as well as taking cover behind various bullet sponges. Frankly, it looks like <em>fantastic madness</em>. Beyond an amorphous 2012 release date, no other details were provided, unfortunately.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Ubisoft sent over the official press release on <em>Far Cry 3</em>, which outs the game as an Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC title. It also details the game's main character, Jason Brody, and his desperate struggle for survival on a desert island gone crazy. <em>FC3</em> is being developed again by Ubisoft Montreal, though this time around the studio will get some extra help from Ubisoft Shanghai and Ubisoft Massive. Head past the break for all the official details.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-e3-2011/">Far Cry 3 (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-e3-2011/#4197540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/farcry3e32011-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-e3-2011/#4197541"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/farcry3e32011-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-e3-2011/#4197542"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/farcry3e32011-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-e3-2011/#4197543"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/farcry3e32011-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/far-cry-3-e3-2011/#4197544"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/farcry3e32011-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/far-cry-3-revealed-sneaks-up-and-murders-our-boring-day/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Far Cry 3 revealed, sneaks up and murders our boring day</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/06/far-cry-3-revealed-sneaks-up-and-murders-our-boring-day/">Far Cry 3 revealed, sneaks up and murders our boring day</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Jun 2011 17:57:00 EST. Codemasters hopes to fill your daily requirement for explosions with these half-dozen new shots from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a>. Development on the new FPS, designed by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/black"><em>Black</em></a> creator Stuart Black, continues apace despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/stuart-black-to-leave-codemasters-this-october-bodycount-still/">his departure from the project</a> and Codies is confident enough in the work so far that a demo is incoming.<br />
<br />
Game director Andy Wilson <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/bodycount_demo_planned.html">tells VideoGamer.com</a> that, "When people play it, they seem to really get on with it, so we want to put it in as many hands as possible." No word yet on a release date for the demo -- the full game is due "this summer" -- but at least we can <em>count</em> on there being one.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/">Bodycount (6/1/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181653"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb003tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181654"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb005tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb007tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/ti002tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/ti003tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/bodycount-squeezes-off-six-shots-demo-on-the-way/">Bodycount squeezes off six shots, demo on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 18:00:00 EST. Joining the likes of "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/fear-3-trailer-becomes-the-king-of-soul/">Soul King</a>" and the imaginatively titled "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/fear-3-multiplayer-trailer/">F***ing Run!</a>" in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fear-3"><em>FEAR 3</em></a>'s array of multiplayer modes is "Soul Survivor," a twist on the last man standing scenario. Players will face an ally turned evil and, if killed, become spectres themselves, tasked with eliminating the living.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/fear-3-trailer-has-a-lot-of-soul-survival/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>FEAR 3 trailer has a lot of soul, survival</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/fear-3-trailer-has-a-lot-of-soul-survival/">FEAR 3 trailer has a lot of soul, survival</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 18:00:00 EST. Normally, we wouldn't consider it news when a game "goes gold" in time for its appointed release date. But when the game in question is <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/duke-nukem-forever"><em>Duke Nukem Forever</em></a>, we feel compelled to report all evidence of an actual game -- with a modicum of skepticism, of course -- until the vulgar little adventure is in our very own hands.<br />
<br />
<meta charset="utf-8" />
"Today marks an amazing day in the annals of gaming lore, the day where the legend of Duke Nukem Forever is finally complete and it takes that final step towards becoming a reality," 2K president Christoph Hartmann said in the announcement, which boldly reiterates the June 10 and June 14 release dates worldwide and for North America, respectively.<br />
<br />
"Slow down, guy, the game's not out yet," we said in this post just now.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/24/duke-nukem-forever-has-gone-gold/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Duke Nukem Forever has gone gold</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/24/duke-nukem-forever-has-gone-gold/">Duke Nukem Forever has gone gold</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 May 2011 09:40:00 EST.
