Curiouser, not one of the developers and publishers named on the previous list makes an appearance on the new roll call. A spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe confirmed to us the first list, sent out last week, was erroneous, and this new one is correct. There are no revisions for any other regions.

The new list removes a number of significant names, including Mojang (Minecraft), Rovio (Angry Birds), Frozenbyte, Criterion Games, and City Interactive. In their stead are some new noteworthy studios, such as CD Projekt, who've confirmed The Witcher 3 as a PS4 game. Also included are Bohemia Interactive, Deep Silver, Ninja Theory, IO Interactive, Codemasters, 2K Games, and Sumo Digital. The full list can be found after the break.

We've reached out to a number of studios for comment. Mojang's Daniel Kaplan reiterated to us the comments he gave to Gamasutra, saying his studio hasn't decided anything yet, and that the error is "confusion from Sony's side." Gamasutra's article also confirms Super Crate Box developer Vlambeer and Skulls of the Shogun creator 17-Bit, both included in the original list, as not currently working on anything for the PS4.

A spokesperson for Monsters (probably) Stole My Princess developer Mediatonic, included in the original list but not in the corrected one, told us he couldn't make any comment on his studio and PS4 development. Meanwhile, Sumo Digital's inclusion adds weight to the rumor the British studio is working on LittleBigPlanet 3, but for the PS4. When approached previously about LBP3, a studio representative told Joystiq, "No comment."

Update 1: A spokesperson for 505 Games tells us the Italian company is "definitely" planning to publish games on the PS4. 505 Games was in the original list of European/PAL PS4 developers and publishers, but not the revised list. The spokesperson noted the company's logo appears in the image showcasing PS4 partners, as shown during last week's event, as do many of the names in the revised list.

Update 2: Sony Computer Entertainment Europe informs us the list of European PS4 studios has been further revised. Two more studios are now present in the form of Criterion Games and Ghost Games (an EA studio) - both were in the original list of 53. That takes the tally of confirmed European studios up to 30.

Continue reading Sony completely revises list of PS4 EU studios, down from 53 to 30 [updates]

Sony completely revises list of PS4 EU studios, down from 53 to 30 [updates] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Feb 2013 08:15:00 EST. Under his 'Experience' tab, Pulkkinen says he's also providing soundtracks for an iPad game and PSN game, both also unannounced.

While Pulkkinen's experience is diverse - he's composed soundtracks for several entries in the Angry Birds and Trine series - the majority of his PlayStation-based work has been for Housemarque. Pulkkinen provided the soundtracks for Super Stardust HD, Outland, Dead Nation, and Super Stardust Delta.

Earlier this month, Housemarque responded to a leak of concept art that included Dead Nation 2, as well as tie-ins to Superman and Walking Dead games. In an official statement, the studio said, "As for the artworks on display, they belong to a discarded batch and are not representative of projects we might or might not be working on."
Continue reading Finnish composer Pulkkinen working on 'unannounced PS4 game'

Finnish composer Pulkkinen working on 'unannounced PS4 game' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 Feb 2013 12:30:00 EST. The mini-game mode was planned for the Director's Cut version of the game, which Frozenbyte said is the best version it can make.

"The idea was to have small mini games that would really make use of the Wii U Gamepad," the developer said. "In the end we had a lot of work with bringing the DLC up to the level of quality that we intended, so scrapping the Magic Mayhem for the launch window made sense."

As for the company's plans for another game in the series, a third game was said to be a "no brainer." Still, the developer doesn't want it to "feel like Trine 2.5, but rather a large leap and something even more awe inspiring."

"We will be moving on to other IP as we feel this is the best way for us to grow as a company. 2013 will be quite a year for us and we aim to please with some cool announcements," Frozenbyte said.
Trine 2's Wii U-exclusive Magic Mayhem mode 'not a likelihood' originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Jan 2013 18:00:00 EST. Frozenbyte (Trine 2) marketing manager Mikael Haveri tells IGN that Nintendo's foray into modern distribution puts it on par with established companies such as Steam and Apple.

"We have the power to price our products as we please, with just some basic guidelines from the big guys," Haveri says. "The step to this is purely from Nintendo's side and they clearly see that [their] previous installments have not been up to par. We can set our own pricing and actually continuing on that by setting our own sales whenever we want. It is very close to what Apple and Steam are doing at the moment, and very indie friendly."

Developers don't need to pay to patch their games on Wii U, either. Recently Fez developer Polytron called out XBLA for charging "tens of thousands of dollars" for patches following the first, free one. Nintendo's infinitely free patching could be a large draw for indies.

"Simply put, they've told us that there are no basic payments for each patch (which were pretty high on most platforms) and that we can update our game almost as much as we want," Haveri says. "For indie developers this is huge."
Frozenbyte: Wii U indies set their own eShop prices, sale dates originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 18 Nov 2012 19:30:00 EST. Haveri also said there would be a lot of puzzles based on light, water, low gravity and magnetic elements.

Frozenbyte's next project is an original IP set to launch at $15 for unannounced platforms, Haveri teased to XBLA Fans. For us in North America, Trine 2 is a real thing, a game we can download and play and everything. Our brothers and sisters in gaming abroad have been denied Frozenbyte's sequel so far on PS3, thanks to a QA snafu at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Eurogamer reports.

"We are anxiously awaiting the European release ourselves!" exclaimed Frozenbyte's vice president Joel Kinnunen to Eurogamer. "We had both SCEA and SCEE versions ready at the same time and they are basically 100 percent the same (SCEA version already has all European languages, for example), so we are very disappointed we couldn't have a simultaneous launch. But it's out of our hands."

Right now, the game's in QA at SCEE with no release date in sight. Kinnunen says "hopefully we'll hear more soon," so when some news is conjured up, we'll be sure to let you all know.
SCEE QA holds up Trine 2 launch in Europe originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 22:00:00 EST. Developer Frozenbyte has added another level to the tri-pronged release of Trine 2, announcing the game's availability on the Mac App Store. This comes more than a week after Trine 2's release on Steam, three days before its release on PSN, and four days before it hits the Xbox Live Marketplace in North America. The App Store version will be getting an update next week.

A PC and Mac demo that includes online multiplayer is available now through Steam or on the game's official site, and a DRM-free version of Trine 2 is dropping in 2012, along with a standalone PC demo.
Trine 2 available via the Mac App Store, demos galore originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 17 Dec 2011 14:30:00 EST. Developer Frozenbyte revealed today, with the launch of Trine 2 on PC/Mac, that the original Trine has sold 1.1 million units to date.

Gamespot mentions a majority of Trine sales were achieved through Steam and the Humble Bundle, with a "notable part" also coming from OnLive. The co-op action title is also available on PS3, but never launched on Xbox 360 due to significant hiccups.
Trine 2 should not experience the same console issues, with the title expected to launch in two weeks on PSN and XBLA.
Your favorite physics puzzle solving triumvirate of fantasy archetypes is reconvening December 7. Developer Frozenbyte has announced the impending availability of Trine 2. The wizard, rogue, and knight will launch a three-pronged assault on PC and Mac on December 7, available both on Steam and at European retailers.

It's only appropriate for Trine to have three separate release dates working together, and Frozenbyte acknowledges the game's tripartite nature. Following the December 7 PC release date, the game will arrive on the North American PSN December 20, and on XBLA worldwide the next day. A European PSN release date is still pending, "but we hope it won't be far behind if delayed at all," noted Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvärinen.
Continue reading Trine 2 puts on its rogue and wizard hats starting December 7

Trine 2 puts on its rogue and wizard hats starting December 7 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Dec 2011 16:30:00 EST. Finnish developer Frozenbyte has announced that its upcoming cooperative platform puzzler Trine 2 will support cross-platform multiplayer across PC and Mac, courtesy of Valve's Steam Play framework. The ongoing beta is also now available for Mac, meaning would-be cross-platformers can test out the new feature immediately ... that is, if you pre-purchased the title.

Note: While Trine 2 will also be available via just about every method of digital distribution known to man - including GamersGate, Direct2Drive, the Mac App Store, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network - only the Steam PC and Mac releases will support cross-platform play. Sorry, Xbox players won't be buddying up with PS3 players. The release is still a vague "later in 2011" and if our Finnish Indie Dev Hunks calendar is accurate, there isn't much of 2011 left.
Continue reading Trine 2 co-op works cross-platform, from PC to Mac, available now in beta

Trine 2 co-op works cross-platform, from PC to Mac, available now in beta originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 Nov 2011 20:30:00 EST. Trine 2 is coming to PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in downloadable form in North America and Europe this year -- which makes the Europe-exclusive physical collector's edition of Trine 2 that much more, well, collectable. Focus Home Interactive is releasing the IRL collector's edition in Europe, which includes the game for both PC and Mac, an art book, the soundtrack, and access to downloadable versions of Trine 2 and the original Trine. It will cost €19.99 (£14.99 in U.K.).
Trine 2's European collector's edition comes in physical form originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 Nov 2011 16:30:00 EST. If the promise of co-op goodness isn't incentive enough to pre-order Trine 2, it looks like Frozenbyte has sweetened up the deal. The game is now available for pre-purchase on Steam for $15, and those who take the plunge will receive access to the multiplayer beta. The beta will include two levels, though few other details have been revealed, including when the beta will actually start. Given the game is set to be released this December, it shouldn't be too long.

Update: Turns out the Trine 2 beta is available right now! Go grab it off of Steam if you already pre-ordered.
Trine 2 pre-order available on Steam, offers beta access [update: beta available now!] originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 31 Oct 2011 17:00:00 EST. The first things you're going to notice are the visuals. Don't feel bad, happens to everybody.
But while you're ogling Trine 2's look, you may just miss that its most significant improvements are in how it's playing with your mind.
Like the game itself, the release of Trine 2 is a cooperative effort between three parties. In North America, developer Frozenbyte is working with Atlus to bring the game to PC, Mac, XBLA, and PSN this fall. And in Europe, Frozenbyte is cooperating with publisher Focus Home Interactive for a PC and Mac release. Atlus is handling the console versions worldwide, according to a statement from Frozenbyte to Eurogamer.

The European PC/Mac release will be out stores and digitally in "Q4," which doesn't sound that far off from the American "fall" window. It'll be available in standard and collector's editions, the latter featuring a soundtrack disc.
Continue reading Trine 2 coming to PC and Mac in Europe this Q4

Trine 2 coming to PC and Mac in Europe this Q4 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 14:10:00 EST. Whenever we embroil ourselves in a fantasy-themed game, we like to imagine ourselves as total loners -- you know, like a bunch of regular ol' Aragorns. The co-op-heavy trailer for Trine 2 posted above makes us rethink our lonely, lonely strategy.
Trine 2 trailer charms with co-op originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Aug 2011 13:00:00 EST. Through the power of your awesome taste in games, Frozenbyte's "Humble Bundle" has raised more than $700,000 (the average pay-want-you-want purchase price is currently a few cents under $5). As a result of this feat, the studio has released an early, playable demo of its forthcoming game, Splot. The full game will be arriving in "the next 2-3 months" and is already included as a "pre-order bonus" for purchasers of the bundle.

Moreover, Frozenbyte has added the Trine level editor to the set, as well as the source codes for Shadowgrounds and Shadowgrounds: Survivor. If you've yet to get in on the bundle, you've still got another four-ish days left to grab it. We hear it's just the right size for an Easter basket.
New 'Humble Frozenbyte Bundle' bonuses unlocked originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 12:00:00 EST. Humble Bundle's third, pay-want-you-want indie games collection, "The Humble Frozenbyte Bundle," is now available from the official site for the next fifteen days. As the name implies, the new set features the works of Finnish developer Frozenbyte, including the platformer Trine and the top-down shooter series Shadowgrounds.

The bundle also includes a pre-order license -- no, not for Trine 2, but for Splot, a mysterious (yet adorable-looking) title that's still under development. Most intriguing, Frozenbyte has tossed in the source code for a canceled project called Jack Claw. According to Edge, the developer hopes to crowd-source the game to completion and offer it for free to everyone that helps.

Like past Humble Bundles, this one is DRM-free and -- with the exception of the Windows-only Jack Claw code -- all the games are available to download for PC, Mac and Linux. Additionally, purchasers are entitled to Steam, Desura and OnLive product keys for compatible titles, as well as the soundtracks for Trine and the Shadowgrounds games.

Oh! And how could we forget? Any two portions of your purchase can be donated to the Child's Play Charity and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a public interest nonprofit that protects consumers' digital rights. Check out the Frozenbyte Bundle promotional video after the break to find out more about this most awesome offering -- or just go buy it already!
The original Trine suffered delays on PSN and worse on Xbox 360, and it looks like Trine 2 is continuing this unfortunate tradition, though on a smaller scale. Originally announced for release this spring, Trine 2 has been bumped to "late summer," according to a press release by publisher Atlus.

In order to help us remain calm, and keep our Trine PTSD in check, Atlus sent out a new trailer. Look, it's still happening! Atlus still says it's coming out on PC, PS3, and Xbox. It's going to be okay.
Continue reading Trine 2 delayed to 'late summer,' this trailer is here to help

Trine 2 delayed to 'late summer,' this trailer is here to help originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 19:00:00 EST. Speaking with 1UP, FrozenByte's Lauri Hyvärinen discussed some of the new facets of Trine 2, noting that online and offline co-op will be a drop-in / drop-out affair and that players can switch between single-player and co-op at any time. Hyvärinen also noted that the game will have a longer adventure than the first, features an entirely new upgrade system and has a "NewGame+" option to let players take on previous puzzles with their new found abilities. Check out a trailer after the break.
Continue reading Trine 2 trailer and details magically appear

Trine 2 trailer and details magically appear originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Oct 2010 19:40:00 EST. While failing to materialize on Xbox Live Arcade, whimsical puzzle platformer Trine found critical success on the PlayStation Network (even including a Platinum Trophy) and PC. Online co-op was a notable omission from the game -- and it's one Atlus and Frozenbyte's reforged partnership hopes to correct with Trine 2, coming to XBLA, PSN and PC in spring 2011.

The iconic trio of playable characters returns in Trine 2, each with a new ability to complement the game's more directed approach to puzzle design. Atlus claims that the physics-based challenges will be more difficult to break or avoid outright, but will still accommodate multiple solutions. Hopefully, experimentation -- or "messing around" in gaming parlance -- will still be encouraged, especially now that three friends can tackle puzzles together online.

We get dibs on the wizard, by the way.
Atlus today distributed a list of titles it will showcase at the (extremely impending) Electronic Entertainment Expo next week. One of the names mentioned on the decidedly vague list of games is Trine 2, the follow-up to Frozenbyte's 2009 PC and PSN action-platformer -- and to think some folks assumed Atlus was just going to announce an XBLA version of the original game. How silly!

Also included in the publisher's E3 lineup is another unannounced title: Rock of Ages, which is being developed by Zeno Clash creator Ace Team. Additionally, localized versions of Etrian Odyssey 3: The Drowned City and the PSP port of Knights in the Nightmare will be at the show.
Trine 2 revealed as part of Atlus E3 lineup originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jun 2010 13:18:00 EST. Atlus has announced it will publish a new digitally distributed game from Frozenbyte. The game is expected to be released sometime in 2011. We know what you're thinking: Trine on XBLA, right? Sorry, Xbox 360 owners, but that ain't happening.

"Indeed, the new game is definitely not 'Trine XBLA' or any Trine port -- that's all in the past now," Frozenbyte's Joel Kinnunen told Joystiq. "I cannot reveal anything else about the new game yet ... I'm pretty sure it will be welcomed with open arms though! And we're really excited to work with Atlus, finally."

More information on the mystery project will be revealed at E3 next week.
Atlus and Frozenbyte tease '2011 digital distribution title' (and it's not Trine XBLA) originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 16:04:00 EST. This weekend, while you were working on the wizard outfit that will finally complete your cosplay group's Trine collective, Steam was busy updating the PC version of the game with free content. According to the Steam news page, Trine received a free DLC level named "Path to New Dawn" as a post-completion bonus this past Sunday. Additionally, a handful of minor updates were made to the game itself, ranging from new information on "experience and secrets in the inventory menu" to fixing a "respawn bug in [the] Iron Forge level (in co-op) near the first gate."

Unfortunately, it appears that the release of this new content in the PS3 version isn't a sure thing. "At the moment we're not sure if the free DLC is going to get released on PSN," developer Frozenbyte told Joystiq. "It's not in our direct control but we'd love to get it released and are trying to make that happen -- but at this point it's hard to say how it will play out. Same goes for the price as well." When we pushed for info about any additional DLC in the pipeline, we were told, "There's no immediate plans on any platform. That said, if you have completed Trine on your PC, then I'd suggest completing this extra level as well, collecting all the 10 purple potions ..." You should probably do that if you're in a position to go potion-hunting.
Trine gets free DLC with Steam patch, Frozenbyte 'not sure' if it's heading to PS3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 17:00:00 EST. You may have started to suspect this when it didn't release last year, but it seems that an Xbox 360 version of puzzle/action/platformer Trine is all but dead. Writing on the company's forums, Frozenbyte's Joel Kinnunen said "It's out of our hands but most likely will not happen. Sorry. (We probably won't comment on this any further.)"

We got a very similar statement from Atlus which told us it's out of the company's hands and probably isn't happening. So if it's out of Atlus' hands and out of Frozenbyte's hands, it would seem the only remaining mitts belong to Microsoft. To be fair though, none of the companies involved would even confirm it was coming, despite the fact it had once been announced by Atlus.

We've asked Microsoft for some more clarification, but don't be surprised if we never get the full story. The important thing to note here is that if you want to play Trine, it's almost certainly going to require a PC or PS3.

So, was a 25 percent reduction not enough incentive to pick up Trine? Did you scoff when Impulse only halved the price? If your cold, frugal heart was unmoved by these gestures of kindness, perhaps its icy confines will be breached by Steam's latest deal. You see, from now through Thursday, Trine can be purchased from the service for 75 percent off its retail price. Yes, that means you can pick up Frozenbyte's magical puzzle-platformer for only five bucks.

Should that fail to penetrate the stony tomb of loneliness inside your rib cage, well, then there's nothing more to be said.
Co-op platformer Trine has received a magical 25 percent price chop on the European PlayStation Network, making it €15. There's currently no word of a stateside drop, but we're aiming for some answers.

Considering the second delay (following a three month holdup) between Trine's European and US release was about a month, maybe it's the theme that's being used for the discount? Then again, €15 converted to USD is $20, so this "price drop" is actually bringing price parity with Trine's current cost in the States.
The PSN puzzle-platformer was supposed to be out in July, before the PC version, but it failed to meet either of those deadlines. So why is it three months late?

Essentially, as Frozenbyte has said, the delay can be attributed to stringent testing for a console release, combined with a long wait for approval of every test -- with just a dash of Sony marketing strategy. Frozenbyte's Joel Kinnunen has described the issue in a lengthy forum post.

"The reason why the US version is so late is a bit of a similar situation as the overall delay," Kinnunen wrote. "We had the US version done around the same time as the European version and I think the publisher submitted it swiftly after hearing the European version was 'ok.'" After that delay, Kinnunen believes, it was Sony's desire to "give the game a good window with regards to other PSN titles/content" that kept it off the US PlayStation Store until today.
Trine coming to US PSN today; Frozenbyte answers the obvious question originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 Oct 2009 18:00:00 EST. All the tryin' is over -- Trine is coming to America. But is it too late? The PSN title looks to finally overcome major delays, only to find itself releasing amidst Uncharted 2, Borderlands and Ratchet & Clank. Good luck, ye brave platformer.

Trine will try and find its way to the North American PlayStation Store on Thursday, October 22. No word on price yet, but the European version launched at €19.99 (about $29); and the currently available PC version is listed for $20.
Trine (finally) gets US PSN release date: October 22 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Oct 2009 13:31:00 EST. Though Trine's lengthy delay has become the butt of many a tactless joke, European PlayStation 3 owners can finally access Frozenbyte's physics-based platformer today -- the pleasant result of a wizard, a warrior and a thief walking into a cross-media bar. As consolation, the trio have brought along a Platinum Trophy, a rarity among downloadable PlayStation Network games.

"Trine has a Platinum Trophy because it's a fairly large game for a downloadable title (and dare I say great quality)," Frozenbyte PR manager Joel Kinnunen told Joystiq. "I think all the heart and soul we poured into the game fused into a platinum core, so maybe that's another reason." The virtual reward, obtained by earning all lower-tier Trophies, is generally reserved for the PS3's retail releases.

You may suspect Trine to become one of them -- the PC version made it to retail in North America, after all -- but Kinnunen ruled out any immediate plans for a Blu-ray release.

Trine's Platinum Trophy is all heart and soul originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 Sep 2009 15:00:00 EST.
