"A lot of kids tripped out," says the former Guns and Roses guitarist, "because they were under the impression that the character in Guitar Hero was just that character. So a lot of kids trip out that I was actually a real person."

Once they found out that he was an actual person who was in an actual band, however, Slash says Guitar Hero was surprisingly effective at winning new fans. "It opened up the doors of a demographic that was way younger than me," he says. "I had no idea that would happen." He couldn't speak to the lawsuit that claims the game took advantage of his GnR connection, but he does say the game has inspired a much younger generation to check out classic rock.

As for interest going the other way, Slash says he hasn't found the time for video games -- not even his own. "I couldn't play it," he says, "because I was actually in the game and it was too surreal."
Slash looks back at working with Activision on Guitar Hero originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 14:45:00 EST. Machinima stars The Brothers Mario are back, and they've brought a new character with them: "Don Keykong," a mob boss who's bananas for vengeance. Along with all of the other cameos, there's even a music video for the gangsta anthem featured in the trailer. French prankster Rémi Gaillard is back to play some more real-life Mario Kart, and he's just as fearless as ever, throwing bananas and turtle shells at cars while zipping around dressed up like the world's favorite plumber. The sound effects really sell this one -- next time you get pulled over by a cop, try Mario's "wooahhohhohhoohhh" on for size. It fits perfectly. After all, as the quote at the end of the video says, "by doing anything, you can become anybody." Why not Mario?

Plus, you get to see why Mario gets those bananas from crates as he goes by, and not straight from the grocery store. Check the whole video after the break.
Continue reading Real-life Mario Kart prankster returns to the track

Real-life Mario Kart prankster returns to the track originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 12 Feb 2011 05:00:00 EST. Oh hi there. The person hosting the video after the break is Gary Bigham, professional Live Action Role Player. He says that he's "cashing in" by creating a Minecraft LARPing video, but you'll be the one cashing in -- fistfuls and fistfuls of the currency known as laughter.

How do you roleplay as a Minecraft character, you may ask? It's harder than it sounds -- you have to try to build a shelter in the woods, use a duct-taped stone pickaxe to find precious gems and, whatever you do, always watch your back for those jerk creepers. Honestly, we're surprised Gary finishes the game as well as he does. Guess that's why he's a pro.
Continue reading Live action role-playing in the world of Minecraft

Live action role-playing in the world of Minecraft originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 02:00:00 EST.
Some wily vandal in Portland, Oregon has painted Mario Kart symbols into the pavement there on one of the city's bike lanes. You can see them in action in this video (also embedded after the break). Unfortunately, the bananas, star and speed arrows don't actually confer the same powers they do in the game, but we did smirk to see that all of the bikers do faithfully avoid the banana peel, and hit the rest of the symbols head on.

You can even wring some unintentional hilarity from the dry-as-a-Dry Bones explanation of what each powerup does by the KATU anchor. That's right, Carl Click!
On first blush, the workplace behind the scenes of the "increasingly frustrating action" game Duck Hunt doesn't seem so bad -- the boss is smart and organized, the space is very modern and clear of cubicle clutter, and all the worker ducks get free drugs and junk food! We have to pay for our meatball subs and cocaine here at Joystiq.

But then you start to realize, thanks to this hard-hitting expose from the folks at College Humor, that the pressure can get to you after a while, especially when the players you're meant to be entertaining start bending the rules. Watch the full short (which is NSFW thanks to language) after the break.
Mega64's latest lampooning is a bit more historical than the troupe's other videos. Posted just after the jump is a video reenaction of the moment of Dante's Inferno's inception. We'd thought that a bright-eyed and bushy-tailed Classic Literature major had planted the idea-seed in an EA executive's mind -- apparently, said gardening was actually performed by Ba'al Zebûb himself.

Check out the video after the jump -- though, if you're employed at a place which frowns upon the use of the word "boners," you can consider said video NSFW.
Continue reading Mega64 reveals the true origins of Dante's Inferno

Mega64 reveals the true origins of Dante's Inferno originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 20:00:00 EST. Ska Studios is at it again, with another Xbox Live Indie Game filled to the brim with awesome. On August 16, the Dishwasher: Dead Samurai dev released a new title, sure to light a creative fire under the butts of game makers everywhere. I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 attempts to answer the question that has plagued game designers for decades: What would happen if you made a game and then put zombies in it?

The results are astounding. Never in the history of the video game world -- unless you consider the Resident Evil franchise, Left 4 Dead, that mode in World at War ... and about three hundred others -- has a game company attempted to insert zombies into their title, but somehow Ska delivers. I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 is available now for the budget price of 80 ($1.00 in human money). Police have arrested 24-year-old Las Vegas resident Kevin Dixon with unlawful trafficking and possession of cannabis after authorities discovered 172 pounds of the substance hidden inside an arcade cabinet. According to the Daily Herald, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had been investigating possible drug activity between Arizona and Nevada, which eventually led to the interception of the arcade unit by DEA agents and the Palatine Police Department.

Over $170,000 worth of the "Sticky Icky" was recovered in the bust, landing Dixon (whose mugshot is poorly 'shopped above) in a Cook County courthouse, where bail was set at $250,000. Dixon's motives are unclear, but we're sure some anti-video game activist will let us know exactly which game is to blame for the crime sometime in the near future.

[Thanks, Don]
Arcade cabinet used to smuggle pot, DEA nabs 'High Score' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 31 Jul 2009 01:00:00 EST. If you've ever wondered what Link's life would be if he were real (and a pathetic middle-aged man), you may enjoy Link, the later years (watch it after the break). If you're a fan of uproarious laughter and entertainment, you won't be a fan of Link, the later years. It has its moments, but Link's pathetic (and monotone) state drags on as a nearly six-and-a-half minute bummer. Seriously, we're so depressed about it we're going to go polish off a whole tub of Chunky Monkey.

[Via GoNintendo]
Continue reading Link, the later (and depressing) years

Link, the later (and depressing) years originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 16:15:00 EST. It's never a slow news day when you can find a picture of Master Chief in a letterman Jacket. PWN or Die features a hilarious gallery of images starring Halo's marquee super-soldier, Master Chief. Usually we recognize the Master Chief from his aggressive "Earth saving" escapades, but these "Senior Yearbook images" show us the UNSC powerhouse has a softer side too. Craigslist provides another bit of strange, gaming-related news, this time with EDP Casting sending out a casting call for Punch-Out!! lookalikes. The post is looking for New York natives to fill the boxing gloves of Piston Honda, King Hippo, Great Tiger and, of course, Little Mac. The listing doesn't specify what the casting call is for but we'd like to dream the entire classic NES title would be put to music and run on Broadway -- with the help of Andrew Lloyd Webber, of course.

If you think you've got the chops to jump into Mac's pink sweatsuit, make sure to take note that EDP is looking for someone with "real fire" in their eyes. So, you really have to want the part ... or at least undergo some experimental surgery.

[Via GoNintendo]
Casting call looking for 'Punch-Out!!' lookalikes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 31 Mar 2009 06:00:00 EST. Sure, it isn't as hilarious -- or nearly as creepy -- as Left 4 Bed, but this video packs one helluva beat. Compiled from audio ripped from our current zombie-fueled obsession, Francis Hates Left 4 Dead cycles through the many things that rub Francis the wrong way. Vans, small towns, boats ... everything in Left 4 Dead drives him mad! His only saving grace? Vests. Beautiful, beautiful vests.
Continue reading Francis hates everything, except vests

Francis hates everything, except vests originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 22:15:00 EST. You like Halo ... and at least have a mild interest in Sonic related items, do you not? Well, Hawty McBloggy has you covered with this video that mashes classic Sonic tunes with Halo 3.

When the video began to make its way around the office, we all experienced the same things in the following order: 1) eye-roll at the idea of more Sonic; 2) mild interest due to Halo content; 3) half-smile when we heard the music; 4) embarrassment at how wrong our preconceptions were upon watching it all; 5) a strong desire to show it to everyone we knew. Welcome to the last step. Check it out after the jump. Tell your friends.

[via Bungie]
Continue reading Mash-up! A user on CNN's iReport blog shared an image that could send shivers down your spine. When their two children wouldn't behave while playing the original Xbox, the husband of iReport user Kingfry of Mechanicsville, Virginia, punished the pair by nailing the system to a tree in the backyard. Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if the Xbox was still functional -- that thing was a beast. Well if that is the case, and since that tree seems fairly tall, may we suggest a wireless internet adapter?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Ultimate Xbox punishment originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Aug 2008 13:45:00 EST. In a recent interview with Dr. Cheryl Olson, co-author of Grand Theft Childhood, Beck lashed out with indifference toward gaming and then proceeded to 'dis' bloggers.

"I will tell you that all these video gamers ... they're bloggers, as well as video gamers - they're writing all kinds of stuff about me [that] I'm the enemy now of video gamers.
We all knew Tom Cruise was a little loony with all this Scientology stuff, but we don't think anyone knew just quite how crazy he'd become until a leaked video featuring Cruise explaining the awe-inspiring power only Scientologists possess.

However, some people don't know that a new religion has sprung up in the wake of the Scientology controversy - PS3ology. Taking a page out of Cruise's book is DJWheat from Epileptic Gaming. Many of you may sit there with a confused expression on your face, but make sure you watch the Cruise video first, because only then will you really appreciate the great parody.

Just remember, it's a privilege to call yourself a PS3ologist.

PS3ologists - your leader has come forward originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 Jan 2008 19:30:00 EST. As upset as we were by Time's flubbing of us this year - a blogger can get used to seeing a horribly disfigured reflection of his own face in the cover of one of the nation's most prestigous newsweeklies y'know - the selection of Russian president Vladimir Putin as the magazine's Person of the Year (POTY) left us a little underwhelmed.

Lucky for us, the folks at Something Awful remedied our apathy with a tall serving of Photoshop phakery, planting all sorts of video game icons on the magazine's cover. Mario and Master Chief are great and all, but our favorite is BioShock's Andrew Ryan. It was not impossible to choose a video game character as Time's Person of the Year ... it was impossible to choose anyone else.
Forget Putin: Gaming icons Photoshopped as Persons of the Year originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Dec 2007 18:58:00 EST. Ever zoned out playing Mario Kart, only to find yourself driving down an interstate some time later, eager to bypass your fellow motorists with the aid of a few well placed turtle shells? Yeah, us neither, but we can totally imagine it and we imagine a similar sentiment contributed to the creation of Invisible Harleys: A Mario Kart Parody by UCSB students Michael Figge and Jess Rigel, part of a short film contest sponsored by Harley Davidson. Keep a close eye peeled for non-canonical weapons like the Giant Magnet[TM] and Super Hammer[TM] ... what, Chomps not good enough?

[Via Wii Fanboy]
Continue reading 'Invisible Harleys: A Mario Kart Parody' short film

'Invisible Harleys: A Mario Kart Parody' short film originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 21:56:00 EST. A Blockbuster video in the UK was recently robbed. A young man held up the two female store clerks at gunpoint, demanding that they give him a Playstation 3. Upon informing him that they didn't stock the console, he settled for an Xbox 360 instead. He also swiped several Xbox 360 games on the way out as well as money from the register. No one was injured, though it took the police 20 minutes to arrive because they were directed to the wrong Blockbuster.

Frankly, we probably would have asked for a Wii.
Xbox Live owners looking to download some Tek Jansen goodness today might be pleasantly surprised to see last night's Daily Show and Colbert Report available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace. The Comedy Central favorites cost 160 MS points ($2) per episode and will be made regularly available "within 24 hours of each original airing" according to a notice from Microsoft.

While we're happy to see some more quality video content available for our Xboxen, we think the pricing might be off for such a short, topical show. At $2 an episode, buying both shows four days a week costs $64 per month. For that kind of money, you could probably swing a complete basic cable package, with a little left over to put towards a Tivo subscription. Considering iTunes users can get the same double dose of direct download comedy goodness for about $20 a month, we've got to wonder why Microsoft thinks their system is worth the extra money.

When you combine Monty Python with Halo, you actually get something pretty darned funny. Now if someone would just take Benny Hill and combine it with a video game, we'd really be onto something.

Just for future aspiring You-Tubing gamers, here's a list of some things we'd love to see:

Fawlty Towers meets Resistance: Fall of Man

Are You Being Served? plus Dead Rising

The Office (the original UK version) mashed up with Rayman: Raving Rabbids

Go on, surprise us (and yes, we know it's ancient, but great humor is timeless!)
Halo meets Monty Python originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Mar 2007 19:55:00 EST. Maybe if Doctor Melfi tried this with Tony Soprano, he could've worked out his anger issues without that near-death experience. Nothing soothes the angry nerves of the savage beast like a few rounds of a GTA-like game. Of course, you need to be careful you don't carry it over into the real world. Whenever we play GTA for hours (days) and then finally get in a car, it is so tempting not just fly off a ramp and bypass traffic.
No idea what system they're gaming on either ... just check out all the buttons on Bart's controller. It's like the red-headed stepchild of the Dreamcast that never came to fruition and only exists as some ideas doodled on a napkin at a Japanese karaoke bar somewhere.
Today's most therapeutic video: Simpsons 'GTA Parody' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Mar 2007 00:01:00 EST. Chris Jensen at GameAlmighty has an entertaining and interesting story up about how so many games feature a lava level, have villain's lairs built around lava, or just feel the need to put molten rock in there somewhere. To quote from the article, "...have you ever stopped to consider what it must have been like to build a castle or dungeon near or on a river of lava? It breaks every rule in the OSHA handbook, I'm sure."

He breaks down the difficulties on building things around lava, let alone living near it. It takes a very hardy soul, and we admit that we would probably start thinking about moving if we had a lava flow nearby. Of course if we did, we could also just call in Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche to save the day. If any knows how to corral lava and work with it, it's those two.
Living on lava: that's hot originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Mar 2007 16:47:00 EST. That little Lite-playing furball has been turning up all over, and the site where the picture originated features several other examples of adorable kitty antics. Unfortunately, it looks like this is the only Nintendo-themed set, but we have high hopes that kitty will someday again be tempted by the DS ... or that the owner will decide to encourage more pictures.
More from the DS cat originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Feb 2007 16:55:00 EST. We had over 100 come in since we announced yesterday's winners, and we've selected two for today. We went a bit artsy for these, both of which feature unique takes on Capcom's game cover.

The Lost Relativity entry comes from Au (that dude is golden ... get it? Please, someone slap us) and has the added bonus of making us lose all sense of balance and equilibrium if we stare at it long enough. Shouldn't any real game have that ability? Nice work, Goldfinger.

Check out the second winner after the jump, and find out all about the contest if you don't know already. If you've entered and haven't won yet, keep it up. We're really impressed by what everyone has been submitting, and picking two winners each night ain't easy.
Continue reading Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day Two

Joyswag Photochop: Lost Planet, found entries - Day Two originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 08 Jan 2007 23:01:00 EST. Our favorite is the lone black and white cover that just says Amish Speedway. The mind reels with what else that game could hold. Cow milking contests? Barn raising competitions? Bring it on. As innovative as the Wii is, we need to start seeing some truly unique games for it. Wii's Waldo actually looks like a fun title, call us crazy.

Keep the wheels turning, game developers. If you code it, Wii will buy it (sorry, couldn't resist).
More Wii titles we'll never see originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Dec 2006 13:57:00 EST.
