An additional 17 head office positions will be terminated at the company.<br /><br />In a media release, Kate Warwick of PricewaterhouseCoopers said, "this is a difficult time for employees and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily. However it is not financially viable to continue to operate at this level at this time." Warwick was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/game-australia-enters-voluntary-administration/">appointed as voluntary administrator</a> of GAME Australia on May 14.<br /><br />The Australian Financial Review posted a <a href="http://afr.com/p/technology/list_of_the_game_stores_to_close_qJM9HPxypd4E8Yh2zPy3gI">list of the 60 stores</a> that have closed.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/26/60-game-australia-stores-to-close/">60 GAME Australia stores to close</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 May 2012 15:00:00 EST. Case in point: after hearing about the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/game-australia-enters-voluntary-administration/">issue with Australia's GAME retail chain</a> and how that could affect <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/diablo-iii"><em>Diablo 3</em></a> pre-orders (it would effectively cancel them without refund), Blizzard took to action.<br /><br />On its forums, Blizzard reps explained how Australians affected by the issue could submit their receipt for a GAME <em>Diablo 3</em> pre-order (purchased before May 15, 2012) directly to Blizzard for a refund. That "refund" only goes through after you've purchased the game directly from the official <em>Diablo 3</em> site, as Blizzard's handling refunds via whatever payment method was used for the pre-order. In so many words, after paying for the game twice, Blizzard will refund your original pre-order expenditure with GAME.<br /><br />Blizzard doesn't list the final instruction, perhaps out of kindness, which is to send a <em>sharply worded letter</em> to GAME's Australian reps. More details on how to submit your pre-order receipt to Blizzard will be posted "as soon as possible."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/blizzard-offering-refunds-for-au-diablo-3-pre-orders-unserved-by/">Blizzard offering refunds for AU Diablo 3 pre-orders unserved by GAME</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 May 2012 12:30:00 EST. GAME's immediate troubles in the UK concluded last month when the company was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/01/investment-company-buys-game-halting-closures-firings-bankrup/">bought</a>, but that was after it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/26/277-game-stores-shuttered-40-of-workforce-let-go-gift-cards-s/">shut nearly 300 stores and cut thousands of jobs</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/game-australia-enters-voluntary-administration/">GAME Australia enters voluntary administration</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 May 2012 14:45:00 EST. This resolves the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/game-not-stocking-mass-effect-3/">key moment</a> several months back when EA cut support and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/03/european-retailer-game-puts-a-plaster-over-its-money-wound/">financial troubles</a> of the retailer became very public.<br /><br />As <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-04-16-now-ea-games-mass-effect-3-and-fifa-street-return-to-game">Eurogamer</a> reports, EA's decision with <em>Mass Effect 3</em> came at the moment when the cracks in GAME's bad news dam couldn't be patched anymore. At the time, it was estimated that GAME would <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/analyst-calculates-games-loss-from-not-stocking-mass-effect-3/">miss out on $3.2 million</a> due to EA's move.<br /><br />"We said two weeks ago that our first priority was to help our customers by putting more new releases and products in our stores and on our websites," GAME CEO Martyn Gibbs told Eurogamer. "Today we've launched a fantastic deal on Mass Effect 3, &pound;29.99 in stores and &pound;24.99 online, and The Witcher 2, with an exclusive t-shirt, is launched tomorrow. <em>Pandora's Tower Limited Edition</em>, which was released on our website last week, will arrive in our stores this week. Private investment company OpCapita's Baker Acquisitions Unlimited has purchased Game, bringing it out of administration and saving 3,200 jobs across a remaining 333 stores and administrative positions, Eurogamer reports.<br /><br />Baker will provide Game with "the capital it needs to trade on a normalised basis" and will re-hire a small number of people fired from the Game head office last week. There are no plans to close more stores in the future, Baker said.<br /><br />Game may have been bought for &pound;1, after paying off an &pound;85 million debt to Game's lenders, Eurogamer said.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/01/investment-company-buys-game-halting-closures-firings-bankrup/">Investment company buys Game, halting closures, firings, bankruptcy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 01 Apr 2012 20:00:00 EST. You can see what looks like an in-game screenshot on <a href="http://www.facebook.com/insomniacgames/timeline/story?ut=32&amp;wstart=1167638400&amp;wend=1170316799&amp;hash=10150767146194853&amp;pagefilter=3">the official timeline post</a>, along with <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150767148929853.474320.91127584852&amp;type=3">some concept art</a>.<br /><br />The blurb says the game was designed to be "the most realistic pinball simulation ever," complete with actual material physics and graphics running at in 60fps at 1080p (as you might have guessed from the title). There was also going to be a "<em>Gran Turismo</em> level of progression," designed to build as much replay value as possible.<br /><br />This, says Insomniac, also explains the whole <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxPZn9KHnu4">(pin)Ballz</a> phenomenon, and the company's fascination with pinball in general. Next is a white knight or angel arriving and saving the day, but with a Sunday deadline this is considered "incredibly unlikely." Outcome number three: GAME is GONE.<br /><br />However, MCV mentions a fourth option, which would save much of the company's workforce and leave the chain with over 300 stores. The move would have GAME voluntarily enter administration and create a "new company, funded by current bank lenders." If it happens, it would occur next Monday. The plan was apparently presented to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/13/game-not-stocking-ninja-gaiden-3-resident-evil-operation-racco/">GAME's concerned suppliers</a> today. If the publishers agree, the GAME continues next week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/20/game-weighs-final-options-before-point-of-no-return/">GAME weighs final options before point of no return</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Mar 2012 21:30:00 EST. In <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/space-invaders-infinity-gene">Space Invaders Infinity Gene</a></em>, for example, he originally experimented with making the invaders more colorful (which you can see on the right in the shot above). But that look made the game "look too 'normal,'" Ishida said. "It didn't really stand out enough for us." He decided to go back to the white coloring of the original invaders, and that helped give the game a unique look.<br /><br />Those graphics may not be the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but Ishida said that helps more than it hurts. "You need a little bit of that quirkiness," he told the crowd, "so it captures your eye and your attention, and it leaves that impression."<br /><br />And that attention leads to curiosity, which Ishida said will really make a game shine. "People will find that curiosity and they'll want to find out where that curiosity is going to take them," he said. Developers obviously don't want to turn off an audience with disharmony, but Ishida said a great game should have "just a little touch -- something that will trigger someone to think that maybe there's a little more that I need to seek out."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/09/reisuke-ishida-on-why-perfect-games-cant-be-perfect/">Reisuke Ishida on why perfect games can't be perfect</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Mar 2012 08:00:00 EST. The retailer also recently announced that it <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/game-not-stocking-mass-effect-3/">won't carry <em>Mass Effect 3</em></a> and future EA titles. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/street-fighter-x-tekken">Street Fighter X Tekken</a> and <em>Asura's Wrath</em> are both slated to launch in the UK this Friday, March 9.<br /><br />Capcom confirmed the news to <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/game-not-stocking-street-fighter-x-tekken-and-asura-s-wrath/092246">MCV</a>, which notes that the availability of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/resident-evil-operation-raccoon-city"><em>Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City</em></a>, Capcom's next big title, is still up in the air. A spokesperson stated, "Capcom wants to reassure its consumers that both these titles, including the Special Edition of <em>Street Fighter X Tekken</em>, will be available at a wide variety of retailers across the UK and Ireland." The spokesperson added that refunds will be issued to those with pre-orders for either <em>Asura's Wrath</em> or <em>Street Fighter X Tekken</em>, advising customers to contact their local GAME or Gamestation.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/05/game-also-not-stocking-street-fighter-x-tekken-asuras-wrath/">GAME also not stocking Street Fighter X Tekken, Asura's Wrath</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Mar 2012 18:15:00 EST. Analyst Mark Photiades of Singer Capital told the <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/marketforceslive/2012/mar/01/game-falls-further-mass-effect-dispute">Guardian</a> he expects Game to lose &pound;2 million ($3.2M) in profits.<br /><br />"Working on the assumption that a decent triple A title sells 0.8m-1m titles in the first few weeks of release in the UK and assuming Game has around 20% share, we calculate that by not stocking <em>Mass Effect 3</em>, Game is potentially missing out on around &pound;6m-&pound;7m of revenues in the UK given the title will retail for &pound;39.99," said Photiades.<br /><br />Ubisoft played some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/22/game-explains-the-missing-ubisoft-vita-launch-titles-physics/">similar hardball</a> with Game recently during the Vita launch. The situation is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/07/uk-retailer-game-cuts-46-jobs-from-hq/">already dire</a> for Game. Not having product to sell can only make it worse.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/02/analyst-calculates-games-loss-from-not-stocking-mass-effect-3/">Analyst calculates Game's loss from not stocking Mass Effect 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 02 Mar 2012 11:00:00 EST. An internal memo obtained by <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-29-revealed-games-memo-to-staff-on-mass-effect-3-cancellation">Eurogamer</a> also reveals the retailer is canceling pre-orders on upcoming EA titles<em> FIFA Street, Tiger Woods 13</em> and <em>Sims 3 Showtime</em>.<br /><br />"Last week we held an event for our publishers in the industry and explained the challenges we are facing in the short term - and we asked for their support," Game channel director Tom Devine wrote. "We will not stock products if the terms are not right for our business - a position we believe is critical to our long term health as a business - we have taken the very difficult decision to not stock EA's March releases, including <em>Mass Effect 3</em>."<br /><br />Game tried to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/22/game-explains-the-missing-ubisoft-vita-launch-titles-physics/">spin its missing Ubisoft Vita launch titles</a> last week, but no amount of voodoo is going to get folks to ignore that <em>Mass Effect 3</em> isn't available at the retailer.<br /><br />Earlier this month, Game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/07/uk-retailer-game-cuts-46-jobs-from-hq/">cut 46 jobs</a> from its headquarters as part of a massive restructuring to save the company. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/03/european-retailer-game-puts-a-plaster-over-its-money-wound/">financial situation is so dire</a>, and the impact on publisher profits from the UK significant enough, that both <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/01/ea-sees-205-million-net-loss-in-q3-rise-in-social-games-users/">EA</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/02/take-two-q3-financials-down-year-over-year-still-within-predict/">Take-Two</a> mentioned the retailer's condition in recent financial calls.<br /><br />It's going to be even more difficult for Game to climb out of its hole if publishers aren't confident enough to provide the retailer with product.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/29/game-not-stocking-mass-effect-3/">GAME not stocking Mass Effect 3, future EA titles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 09:40:00 EST. Etrian Odyssey veterans Yuji Himukai, Shin Nagasawa, and Yuzu Koshiro are also on board. Daisuke Kaneda, taking reins as game director, served as battle advisor on the original game and directed <em>Trauma Team</em>.<br /><br />Atlus says the game will be out in Japan on July 5. Since older Etrian Odysseys have eventually found their way over to North America, there's a chance we'll see this one here too.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/28/etrian-odyssey-iv-coming-to-the-3ds-in-japan-classes-detailed/">Etrian Odyssey IV coming to the 3DS in Japan, classes detailed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Feb 2012 02:30:00 EST. Game still doesn't have definite plans to carry the games, and marketing director Anna-Marie Mason explained why to <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-02-22-game-we-cant-stock-absolutely-everything">Eurogamer</a>: "You can see, there's a finite amount of space in a store." <em>No way</em>. Do go on.<br /><br />"We can't stock absolutely everything. That's just not possible," she said. Mason didn't cite Game's financial troubles as a direct cause of the missing titles, talking past Game's store closures, layoffs, broken credit lines and the potential sale of its international branch.<br /><br />One possible reason for Game's struggling sales is an influx of cheaper online retailers, but Mason said Game offers something more, citing the store's 2.5 million customers a week. "What our customers get from us, whether they shop with Game or Gamestation, is more than a sterile transaction," Mason said. "They get the opportunity to transact with us in the way they want and they get added value. Our customers will vote with their feet."<br /><br />Game may stock Ubisoft's Vita launch titles in the future, Mason said, but for now it does offer the games through a "downloadable option," which we're sure will attract <em>dozens </em>of feet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/22/game-explains-the-missing-ubisoft-vita-launch-titles-physics/">Game explains the missing Ubisoft Vita launch titles, physics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Feb 2012 18:15:00 EST. Game said it will not stock <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/lumines-electronic-symphony"><em>Lumines Electronic Symphony</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/michael-jackson-the-experience"><em>Michael Jackson: The Experience</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rayman-origins"><em>Rayman Origins</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/asphalt-injection"><em>Asphalt Injection</em></a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dungeon-hunter-alliance"><em>Dungeon Hunter Alliance</em></a>, according to a statement picked up by VG24/7.<br /><br />Neither Game nor Ubisoft provided a specific reason for the shaft. A list of over 2000 customer usernames, email addresses, and hashed passwords has been released.<br />
<br />
GAME <a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/game/an-official-message-about-todays-hacking-claims/10150610964206000">denied</a> that it's been hacked. "The published email addresses are not registered users of GAME.co.uk, and there has been no breach of our database security." That leaves catalyst-gaming as a potential source of email addresses. Regardless, if you've used either site recently, a password change wouldn't hurt.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/16/report-uk-retailer-games-customer-database-breached/">Report: UK retailer GAME's customer database breached</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 Jan 2012 12:30:00 EST. Someone at British brick-and-mortar franchise Game seems to have confirmed our expectant attitude towards EA's Need for Speed franchise. The British retail outlet's <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/gamedigital">Twitter account</a> documented a trip to EA for a presentation, and casually noted plans for a new Need for Speed ("Need for Speed 13!"), not to mention a word on the as-yet-unseen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/medal-of-honor-2010"><em>Medal of Honor</em></a> sequel. As <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2012-01-12-game-outs-new-medal-of-honour-need-for-speed-13">Eurogamer</a> reports, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/Gamedigital/status/157409882373492736">the tweet</a> is no longer available, though other volleys from the account confirm the retailer's presence at an EA presentation.<br />
<br />
EA has spoken about a <em>Medal of Honor</em> sequel <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/medal-of-honor-2-danger-close/">in the past</a>, though this is the first we've heard of it in quite some time. It's said to be developed by EA's Danger Close studio, and we're not sure if Battlefield studio EA DICE will be once more tasked with handling the multiplayer component. Meanwhile, following the pattern of annual Need for Speed releases, it's likely that Burnout studio Criterion will be tasked with the <em>thirteenth</em> (!!) entry in the series.<br />
<br />
We've reached out to EA for comment, but aren't expecting much more than some light under its breath cursing.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> In response to this report, an EA rep told Joystiq, "We do not comment on rumor or speculation."<br />

Two major UK video-game retailers, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/hmv/">HMV</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/game">Game</a>, saw a drop in sales over Christmas, prompting HMV to reconsider its investment in games as a whole, <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/9001753/HMV-to-scale-back-video-games.html">The Telegraph</a> reports. HMV's gaming market share fell 16 percent over the holidays, while sales in music and DVDs saw no change; games now account for 20 percent of HMV's sales. Chief Executive Simon Fox said HMV may focus only on AAA titles in the future.<br />
<br />
Game's Christmas retail sales were down 15 percent, while year-on-year it lost 13 percent in sales, <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-01-10-game-holiday-sales-drop-15-percent">GamesIndustry.biz</a> says. Online sales rose 4 percent, and sales for the year ending January 2012 dropped 12 percent, less than the UK gaming market's total loss of 13 percent. Game recently closed 39 stores and is expected to have 550 in the UK by 2013, GamesIndustry notes. CEO Ian Shepherd is banking on the Wii U and PS Vita to revitalize sales in 2012.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/11/uk-game-industry-holiday-snapshot-suggests-weakening-retail-sale/">UK game industry holiday snapshot suggests weakening retail sales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 03:00:00 EST. OnLive's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/18/onlive-microconsole-review/">microconsole</a> has booked passage over to The Old World and will be arriving at Game in time for the holidays. <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/onlive-microconsole-heads-to-retail-this-year/088194">MCV</a> reports that retailer Game gets initial dibs on selling the streaming device, with others to follow in 2012. The OnLive service <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/22/onlive-launches-in-uk-offers-cheap-games-and-other-deals/">launched in the UK</a> back on September 22.<br />
<br />
"There's going to be a number of things we're doing," said OnLive CEO Steve Perlman. "Consumers will be able to play demos on Game's website, buy the OnLive game system in stores as well as top-up cards like XBLA and iTunes vouchers." OnLive subscription cards will also be sold in Game stores before year's end. Currently, OnLive has "millions" of users in the UK.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/07/onlive-microconsole-to-be-sold-through-game-in-uk-this-month/">OnLive microconsole to be sold through Game in UK this month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Dec 2011 07:00:00 EST. <br />
The actual <em>Neverwinter</em> MMO isn't set to come out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/02/torchlight-neverwinter-mmos-scheduled-to-launch-late-2012-early/">until later on next year</a>, but <em>Heroes of Neverwinter</em> is a new social game that's available to play right now on Facebook. According to the trailer above, it offers the "deepest RPG experience Facebook has ever seen," with some strategy-accented, turn-based combat based on the <em>D&amp;D</em> system, and even a dungeon creation tool to play with. As you might imagine, the game is heavily microtransaction-based, so your journey through the Forgotten Realms will likely be punctuated with plenty of pitches to spend some real-life dough on the title.<br />
<br />
But if you've been waiting for Facebook games to actually show a little more complexity (more complexity, at least, than those wooden animations in the trailer), <em>Heroes of Neverwinter</em> does up the ante. It's <a href="http://www.facebook.com/HeroesOfNeverwinter">available for free right now</a> on the big blue social network.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/11/heroes-of-neverwinter-brings-dandd-combat-to-facebook/">Heroes of Neverwinter brings D&amp;D combat to Facebook</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 11 Oct 2011 07:00:00 EST. <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/313104/assassins-creed-revelations-collectors-animus-editions-detailed/">CVG</a> reports that not only will the UK receive the previously revealed "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/17/assassins-creed-revelations-animus-edition-tempts-irish-fans/">Animus Edition</a>" of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-revelations"><em>Assassin's Creed: Revelations</em></a>, but a <em>second</em> collectible bundle as well. The "Collector Edition" differs from the Animus Edition in that it contains an artbook and soundtrack instead of an encyclopedia, and leaves out the in-game Armor of Brutus and capacity upgrades.<br />
<br />
Oh, and it's &pound;49.99 for Xbox 360 or PS3, instead of the Animus Edition's &pound;68.99, as listed by retailer <a href="http://www.game.co.uk/Games/Xbox-360/Action-Adventure/Assassins-Creed-Revelations-Collectors-Edition/~r355279/?s=assassins+creed+revelations">GAME</a>. The Animus Edition is available from the UK's Ubishop site.<br />
<br />
Oh, did you want the artbook, soundtrack, and encyclopedia? Don't worry -- you don't have to buy the game twice. The <a href="http://store.ubiworkshop.com/assassins-creed-encyclopedia-white-edition/">Ubiworkshop</a> is selling the encyclopedia.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/26/assassins-creed-revelations-collector-edition-joins-animus-ed/">Assassin's Creed Revelations 'Collector Edition' joins Animus Edition in UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 21:00:00 EST. For us here in America, soccer will never hold the same fascination as it does abroad. All across Europe, the sport of <em>football</em> is revered -- and in the UK, EA's <em>FIFA</em> franchise does <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/black-ops-fifa-just-dance-make-uks-top-10-entertainment-produ/">gangbusters</a>. If you happen to live in the United Kingdom, EA is looking to provide incentive for committing to this year's latest, <em>FIFA 12</em>, early.<br />
<br />
If you pre-order <em>FIFA 12: Ultimate Edition</em> on Xbox 360 or PS3 before September 30 at GAME or Gamestation, you'll get 24 <em>FIFA 12 Ultimate Team</em> gold packs (four a month over the course of six months). Pre-orders from other retailers will net you a reduced 18 gold packs (three a month over six months). <em>Ultimate Team</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/fifa-10-ultimate-team-dlc-pitched-amid-sales-surge/">the trading card game introduced in 2010</a>, will debut in October as a separate download.<br />
<br />
<em>FIFA 12 </em>launches in North America on September 27. The rest of the world has to wait a few extra days until September 30.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-soccer-12-360-ps3/">FIFA Soccer 12 (360/PS3)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-soccer-12-360-ps3/#4169940"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/fifa12arsenalchelseacenterpitchwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-soccer-12-360-ps3/#4169941"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/fifa12arshavinprotectingballwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-soccer-12-360-ps3/#4169942"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/fifa12kakarunwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-soccer-12-360-ps3/#4169943"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/fifa12lyonheaderinterceptwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fifa-soccer-12-360-ps3/#4169944"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/fifa12ronaldoblockingwm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/02/uk-fifa-12-ultimate-edition-pre-order-bonuses-are-golden/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>UK FIFA 12: Ultimate Edition pre-order bonuses are golden</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/02/uk-fifa-12-ultimate-edition-pre-order-bonuses-are-golden/">UK FIFA 12: Ultimate Edition pre-order bonuses are golden</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 02 Jul 2011 03:00:00 EST. Like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-bad-company-2"><em>Battlefield: Bad Company 2</em></a> before it, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-3"><em>Battlefield 3</em></a> will be arriving at retail in a regularly priced "Limited Edition," encouraging folks to pre-order the game before its planned fall launch. The UK will get the "Physical Warfare" version for the same price as the regular edition, which includes a small arsenal of weaponry, as well as access to the "Back to Karkand" multiplayer expansion -- four remade maps from <em>Battlefield 2</em>.<br />
<br />
As this edition has only been announced for the UK thus far, it can only be ordered from GAME and GameStation for now, running the standard &pound;39.99 on 360/PS3 and &pound;34.99 on PC. That said, when EA <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/battlefield-3s-back-to-karkland-pack-features-wake-island-thre/">initially confirmed</a> the "Back to Karkand" expansion, DICE community manager Daniel Matros noted that it would be available worldwide via an in-box code.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, peruse the full "Limited Edition" armory after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/battlefield-3-gets-physical-in-uk-with-limited-edition/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Battlefield 3 gets 'physical' in UK with Limited Edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/battlefield-3-gets-physical-in-uk-with-limited-edition/">Battlefield 3 gets 'physical' in UK with Limited Edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 May 2011 11:25:00 EST. According <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/34121/Best_Buy_Planning_Dedicated_Game_Sales_Clerks_InStore_Gaming_Desks">a recent presentation by the company</a>, Best Buy plans to add employees and facilities to its retail stores to encourage game sales sometime this fiscal year. The big box store currently sits behind other retailers like GameStop and Walmart in gaming revenue, but hopes to turn that situation around by setting up game-focused employees and sales counters.<br />
<br />
The employees will handle trade-ins and preorders, and be expected to sell "exclusive digital add-ons" as customers come in and pick up their games. Best Buy reportedly wants to push a "virtuous cycle," where customers preorder games, buy the DLC at the store, and then use trade-in credits for another preorder as the cycle starts up again.<br />
<br />
The game sections in each store are also slated to increase in size, with the less-popular music departments taking the hit in most cases. Best Buy doesn't say if it plans to have free hot dogs for customers who come and buy games, but we're just throwing that out there, guys. Think about it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/18/best-buy-building-out-game-departments-with-new-sales-desks-and/">Best Buy building out game departments with new sales desks and trained employees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Apr 2011 20:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/">Direct2Drive</a>'s downloadable game rentals <a href="http://blog.direct2drive.com/2011/01/d2ds-rentals/">kicked off in North America</a> this past January, and the program has been so popular that it's <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/43849/Direct2Drive-launching-rental-download-service">coming to Europe later on this year</a>. That's the word from head of international digital distribution Paul Herron, who says that "publishers are positive and gamers love the service, with the conversion from rental to purchase remaining extremely high."<br />
<br />
It's not clear yet which games will be available for rental in the regions. North America still <a href="http://www.direct2drive.com/Search.aspx?SearchTerm=rental">only has about six titles</a> on tap, and Herron says the publisher is "securing content" for the European launch. In many European countries, the company doesn't even have the download service up and running yet, so, yeah: <em>first things first</em>, guys.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/08/direct2drive-bringing-game-rentals-to-uk-europe-this-year/">Direct2Drive bringing game rentals to UK, Europe this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 04:00:00 EST. A report in <a href="http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3509635/Furious-dad-who-got-ill-playing-Nintendo-3DS-for-3-MINUTES-is-denied-a-full-refund.html">tabloid The Sun</a> of the 3DS making headaches in "thousands" of users is just plain untrue according to Nintendo, HMV and GAME, the three entities the paper mentions. Nintendo said returns are "well below" other hardware launches and GAME says less than five people have complained that the portable made them ill. In fact, you can't even return something in the UK because it made you sick.<br />
<br />
HMV admits some 3DS systems have been traded in for store credit, but stops short of copping to "thousands." Sheesh, what is this world coming to when you can't even trust the tabloids?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/retailers-shoot-down-3ds-returns-due-to-headaches-story/">Retailers shoot down claims of 3DS returns prompted by headaches</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 22:15:00 EST. Whoops! It seems that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-black-ops"><em>Call of Duty: Black Ops</em></a> will get a second DLC pack on May 3, according to a flyer that allegedly popped up on GAME's Australian retail site (since pulled, but captured by <a href="http://www.vg247.com/2011/04/05/black-ops-escalation-pack-outed-by-game-australia/">VG247</a>). The flyer advertises five seemingly distinct maps -- a zoo, a hotel, a convoy, a stockpile, and a new locale for the co-op Zombie Mode -- but doesn't list a price.<br />
<br />
As per Activision and Microsoft's timed exclusivity agreement, the date only applies to Xbox Live for now. Activision couldn't be reached for comment as of publishing, but we'll update this story as soon as we get more information.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/report-black-ops-escalation-dlc-outed-by-retail-flyer-coming/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Report: Black Ops 'Escalation' DLC outed by retail flyer, coming this May</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/05/report-black-ops-escalation-dlc-outed-by-retail-flyer-coming/">Report: Black Ops 'Escalation' DLC outed by retail flyer, coming this May</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 11:00:00 EST. If you were confused by the presence of a pre-owned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> on the shelves of your local GAME outlet on the handheld's launch weekend, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-03-29-game-staff-told-to-buy-3ds-from-tesco">Eurogamer's</a> uncovered a possible shady explanation. According to an unnamed source who works for the retailer, a company memo encouraged GAME employees to use money from their registers to purchase a 3DS and game bundle from its competitor, Tesco, for the discounted price of &pound;209.90. They could then trade the merchandise back to GAME for the exact same price.<br />
<br />
The memo described this maneuver as "a great opportunity to gain 3DS consoles and games for your store's pre-owned stock." Each pre-owned system could then be "set at the same price as mint due to unexpected supply shortage on the market and the quality of the stock." However, the memo instructs employees not to sell the pre-owned handhelds until the mint hardware is sold out, prohibiting clerks from "up-selling" the used merch.<br />
<br />
The document describes these shopping runs as "not mandatory," but Eurogamer reports one GAME employee said his store was reprimanded for not participating.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/29/report-game-bought-3ds-stock-from-tesco-to-resell-as-pre-owned/">Report: GAME bought 3DS stock from Tesco to resell as pre-owned</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Mar 2011 21:20:00 EST. The latest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mortal-kombat-2011"><em>Mortal Kombat</em></a> may be for consoles only, but that hasn't kept its publisher, Warner Bros. Interactive, from creating an arcade cabinet for the game ... which can only be had if you're the UK's best at <em>MK</em>. WBIE is teaming with GAME and GameStation to hold a tournament that runs from March 14 through April 11, culminating in a final round at the Gadget Show Live in Birmingham.<br />
<br />
The winner will <strike>take</strike> lug home the custom coin-op cabinet, which houses a PS3, meaning it can <em>technically</em> be used to play <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/super-street-fighter-iv"><em>Super Street Fighter IV</em></a>, the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/tekken-tag-tournament-2"><em>Tekken Tag Tournament 2</em></a>, or any number of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/@ps3,fighting">fighters on the platform</a>. The cabinet's artwork depicts Scorpion on one side and Sub-Zero on the other -- and looks pretty amazing, if you ask us. Ah, the perils of trying to do "secret" beta testing. <a href="http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=57549656&amp;postRepeater1-p=1#57550439">A few Bungie.net members</a> got an email this week asking them to join in on a Bungie beta tester signup survey, but when they headed over to the <a href="https://survey.bungie.net/survey/TakeSurveyError.aspx?SurveyID=82KIn72&amp;Reason=2">actual survey link on Bungie.net</a>, all they got was an error message saying the survey was suspended due to "technical difficulties."<br />
<br />
Presumably Bungie will get the survey up and running later, though they'll possibly send the invitation out to less "talky" members of their community -- this is supposed to be a secret, after all. In other news: Bungie conducts secret survey! Could it be about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/03/bungies-next-game-is-massively-multiplayer/">that new MMO</a>? Oh, wait -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/05/bungie-mmo-announcement-during-gdc-panel-was-a-joke/">never mind</a>.<br />

<br />
The package also includes new in-game costumes for all four characters, including wrestling outfits much like those included as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/03/enslaved-underperforms-with-460-000-sold-worldwide/">bonuses</a> with <em>Yakuza 3</em>. It also includes a "survival" boss rush mode, a racing mode and underground fighting arena DLC -- the perfect venue for that wrestling outfit. GAME is currently offering this edition for the same &pound;50 price as the regular version.<br />
<br />
Sega informed Joystiq that the "Kuro Edition" is for Europe only, and won't be offered in North America.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/04/yakuza-4-special-edition-listed-by-uk-retailer/">Yakuza 4 special edition listed by UK retailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Feb 2011 18:40:00 EST. Nintendo has refuted our attempts to wrangle <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/3ds">3DS</a> game pricing info so far, but retailer listings may be shedding some light on the subject. We hope you weren't hoping for a standard price point, because it looks like there's some wiggle room. A review of <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/browse/search.aspx?dsNav=Ntk:TitleKeyword|3ds|1|">GameStop</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_nr_n_0?rh=n:468642,k:3ds,n:!11846801,n:2622269011,n:2622270011&amp;bbn=2622269011&amp;keywords=3ds&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1295463619&amp;rnid=2622269011">Amazon</a> listings reveals 3DS prices of either $39.99 or $49.99 in the US. Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-01-19-game-3ds-titles-to-sell-for-GBP39-99">Eurogamer</a> reports that UK retailer Game has confirmed the standard software price will be &pound;39.99 in the region, though other UK retailers have prices listed as low as &pound;32.99. Finally, we perused Amazon France and spotted prices of <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Nintendo-PilotWings-Resort-3DS/dp/B003SNJNUO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1295461479&amp;sr=8-1-spell">&euro;49.95</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.fr/Clancys-splinter-chaos-theory-Nintendo/dp/B0045Y1ABA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1295461618&amp;sr=8-1">&euro;59.95</a>.<br />
<br />
The disparate prices between titles matches up with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/08/3ds-japanese-launch-lineup-announced-along-with-blazblue-for-la/">pricing in Japan</a>, though it is a bit more standardized. We'll keep poking Nintendo for official details.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/19/retailers-3ds-games-priced-at-40-50-in-us/">Retailers: 3DS games priced at $40-50 in US; £33-40 in UK; €50-60 in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. <em>Inception</em> director Christopher Nolan has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/22/inception-game-considered-by-Nolan/">considering putting together a video game</a> based on his mind-bending film for a while, but it looks like those plans have gone <em>one leve</em>l <em>deeper</em>: He now tells Entertainment Weekly that <a href="http://insidemovies.ew.com/2010/11/30/christopher-nolan-batman-inception/">the project is a go</a>. Nolan says he's working with a full team on the game as "a longer-term proposition" and that he's excited to "explore" the medium of gaming by creating a new story set in the world of the movie.<br />
<br />
EW suggests an MMO, but we have a better idea (that we wouldn't mind planting in the back of Nolan's brain, if someone out there has the means to do it, wink wink): a spinning top simulator. Call us, Nolan -- we've got <em>Dark Knight</em> ideas, too!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/christopher-nolan-confirms-inception-video-game-in-development/">Christopher Nolan confirms Inception video game in development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 20:00:00 EST.
