Now, the museum is at it again, trying to raise money directly for the next six months.

It's called the "Level 2" campaign, and the Museum is trying to raise another $20,000 for various events and programs. Anyone who donates more than $25 will be able to get a gift of a sticker or a t-shirt. If you don't want to go through PayPal, the museum is accepting donations directly at its Oakland location as well.

The museum has been holding video game tournaments, programming classes (seen above), and open hours every week, and is now home to the GamePro archives. The donation campaign will run through March 31.
Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment begins 'Level 2' fundraising originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Feb 2012 02:00:00 EST.
Gaming magazine icon GamePro announced that the November issue - its first quarterly installment - will be its last, after 20-plus continuous years of publishing. The website will also be closed, effective December 5, IndustryGamers reports. If you're looking for gaming content, expect to be redirected to "the PCWorld GamePro channel on pcworld.com," publisher IDG says. And that means that GamePro's editorial staff is out, while PCWorld's will attempt to make up the slack.

But GamePro isn't going away completely; instead, it's "refocusing its US business exclusively on its growing custom publishing and solutions business." That means custom content, like the E3 show daily, which publisher IDG and GamePro historically produce. But for you, dear reader, GamePro is dead. So we leave you with the above video, of a simpler time, when magazines still ruled and jean jackets were still cool.

RIP GamePro, and good luck (former) GamePro staff.

Last week, GamePro shocked the industry when the magazine mainstay announced it was changing over to a quarterly format. Julian Rignall, vice president of GamePro media, recently explained the decision to Gamasutra. In a market with dwindling circulation, Rignall believes there's still a place for print. According to the executive, the choice is either to become incredibly cheap and "disposable" or, as GamePro plans to do, become a more expensive, premium product.

Rignall said their just isn't a place for "sort of six, seven dollar magazines that are kind of cheap and a bit crap with low production." Magazines, to him, are no longer an impulse purchase, and most gamers can get their info on websites (like this one) anyway. According to Rignall, today's magazines are sold to a different kind of customer, "sort of upper-middle-class NPR listeners," that have "a level of connoisseurism about what they like."

In addition to targeting a different kind of consumer, GamePro will also reduce distribution, limiting to locations where "we know they'll sell." Also, thanks to the quarterly format, breaking news coverage will take a backseat to "more thoughtful" coverage. Rignall likens it to "a magazine that kind of celebrates gaming in the terms of its sort of context within history, what's kind of going on now and where it's going."

Head over to Gamasutra for more on the new GamePro, including Rignall's belief that even if it fails, he hopes it will usher out the era of gaming magazines "in style."
GamePro VP talks about the shift to quarterly mags originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 23:00:00 EST. One of the few active gaming publications that can truly be labeled "seminal" is drastically revamping how its physical version comes to consumers. Beginning with its Nov. 8 edition (Winter 2011) GamePro will become a quarterly magazine that will not only pack a bigger size per issue (15 percent larger and with 50 or so added pages) but a heftier price tag: $9.99.

It won't just be bigger, though: GamePro Media says that the new mag will offer "a visually stunning, tactile experience and rich, engaging editorial." So, basically, quality over quantity, or (perhaps more accurately) quality and some quantity over frequency.

We're looking forward to seeing the results.
GamePro magazine switching to quarterly schedule originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 26 Jul 2011 13:00:00 EST. One of Sony's major E3 titles has been revealed slightly ahead of time. Sony and Guerrilla Games are delivering on Jack Tretton's impromptu promise: Killzone 3 is real, and you'll be able to see it for yourself in the July issue of GamePro, on shelves June 1. A subscriber spilled the Helghan beans on the GameSpot forums, also revealing that the game is playable in 3-D, with the effect requiring the use of glasses (oh, and a 3-D-capable television). GamePro has confirmed the cover story to Joystiq.

That means that Killzone 3 is going to be a showpiece for Sony's 3-D technology, and therefore we should probably expect to hear a lot about it at the company's E3 presentation.
Killzone 3 revealed in next GamePro -- and it's 3-D originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 May 2010 18:45:00 EST. We were busy ogling the suitable-for-framing cover art of the May issue of GamePro just posted by mag boss John Davison when we noticed a title we didn't recognize: Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Considering how well-informed and handsome we all are, we were understandably stymied. Unfortunately, Activision declined to comment so we don't know any more than you do about it at the moment, though we have to assume this is the previously-announced upcoming Spider-Man game, which supposedly won't suck.

Hopefully we'll have more for you when the issue starts hitting subscribers in the coming days.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions teased by GamePro originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Mar 2010 16:47:00 EST. GamePro has dropped some details on the iPhone version of Street Fighter IV, which is due out in March. The site has word that Capcom will sell the game for $9.99 on Apple's App Store, and that it will feature a total of eight characters: Ryu, Ken, Guile, Blanka, Chun-Li, Dhalsim, M. Bison and Abel. While it hasn't shared any gameplay impressions yet, it did post a video, which you can see after the break. Surprisingly, the game looks just like Street Fighter IV, with the ultra moves, same colorful art style and other graphical touches from the bigger console versions.

We're still not sure about playing with the touchscreen "buttons," though -- while they aren't in the way as much as we thought from the original screenshots (most of the fighting takes place in the middle of the screen), not having that tactile feedback could be a problem. Still, the game looks good. No exact release date yet, but like all those people hanging out in the backgrounds of these fights, we'll be watching.

Gallery: Street Fighter IV (iPhone)

Continue reading iPhone Street Fighter IV has eight characters, will cost $10

iPhone Street Fighter IV has eight characters, will cost $10 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 22:30:00 EST. Between John Davison recently promising a revitalization of GamePro, Steve Harris' purchase and subsequent relaunch of EGM (as EGM Now), and now the announcement of "Kill Screen" from Jamin Brophy-Warren and Chris Dahlen, it's been quite the year for gaming magazines. But Kill Screen seems to be taking a decidedly different approach to publishing, aiming its first print run at "2 or 3,000 copies," Brophy-Warren told us this afternoon.

With an editorial directive to thematically tackle game writing -- and no obligation to the traditional reviews/previews/news format due to a donation/subscriber-funded, non-profit approach -- Kill Screen intends to avoid the mechanical nitty gritty that plagues game writing. "A great example of that is with Brütal Legend," Brophy-Warren said. "Tim Schafer had to come out and defend the RTS elements ... When we talk about games critically, it's not going to be in that sense."

The first issue, the "test run" or "zero issue" as it's being called, will be finished in "the next week or two" and shipping by January. Brophy-Warren added that he's hoping the second issue will be ready for GDC, but he's not so certain. And as for the short initial print run, he says "Everyone's gotta start somewhere, right?" and encourages people to subscribe to insure they'll get a copy. We wish them the best of luck!
Kill Screen gaming mag aiming for highbrow readers originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 02 Dec 2009 23:00:00 EST. For those of you visiting BlogFaction.com in the past day or two, the news that the handful of GamePro-owned sites aggregated there (including GameGirl and GamePro Arcade) are being shuttered isn't exactly fresh. The closing of the "BlogFaction" branded sites comes just weeks after the announcement of new leadership under ex-1UP/WhatTheyPlay owner John Davison. Joystiq spoke with Davison this afternoon about the change and confirmed that while the sites will remain online, they will no longer receive any updates.

"We've invited all the BlogFaction contributors to pitch stories to GamePro," Davison told us. "A lot of my emphasis is going to be on building up online and really trying to think of GamePro as 'GamePro, the brand,' not just 'GamePro, the magazine' ... I started last week and the charge I was given was to help reboot GamePro as a brand." He explained that the reasoning behind discontinuing updates to the BlogFaction sites is to refocus effort on GamePro.com, and his next focus is on delineating between GP content that works online versus that which works in print. He left us with the hint that we'll hopefully be seeing the fruits of his labor by early next year.

GamePro shutters BlogFaction websites, focusing on GamePro.com originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 23:00:00 EST. More and more, we're seeing evidence that the days of favorite faces being permanently associated with certain outlets are a thing of the past. GamePro announced today that John Davison (formerly of What They Play and 1UP) would serve as executive vice president of content at its long-running magazine and website, a week after Garnett Lee left 1UP to head editorial content for GameFly. Davison's most recent project was recently sold to IGN.

In an official statement, Davison said he hopes to "reshape GamePro as a thoroughly modern integrated media brand," a strategy that we give five screaming happy faces out of five.
What They Play's John Davison makes leap to GamePro originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Oct 2009 16:57:00 EST. Did you know that Dead Space: Extraction landed in stores this week? It's true! We certainly dug it in our Snap Judgment, but in case that just wasn't enough for you, we've compiled a few other folks' opinions on the game just below. Worried about not seeing that beautiful screaming face in the future? We are too, folks. We are too.

GamePro (100/100): "An experience that's more captivating and engaging than any light-gun game I've ever played before. [The story] mirrors Dead Space's thoughtful dialogue, characterizations and pacing which is a good thing all around."

GameDaily (80/100): "Although we questioned EA's decision to do this, as well as bring Dead Space to the family centric Wii, everything clicks and the game's surprisingly enjoyable. Instead of conjuring up a cheesy narrative (as seen in other shooters like Ghost Squad), the developers put a lot of effort into the story and its characters."

Eurogamer (80/100): "Gameplay is straightforward, yet it's a refined familiarity, borrowing numerous elements from the original Dead Space in abundance while wrapping them around the well-worn demands of a typical on-rails shooter ... One area that definitely benefits from the on-rails nature of Extraction is the overall pacing. Sometimes you creep along agonisingly, other times it feels like the enemy onslaught is never going to end. There are few occasions where you don't come away feeling like your scraped through by the skin of your teeth, and even on the game's lowest 'Normal' difficulty, there's a definite sense of achievement when you get through."

Giant Bomb (60/100): "Extraction's marketing campaign would like you to think of it as a 'guided experience' that whisks you through the dramatic beginnings of the series' horrible space-monster outbreak, but in blunt terms, Extraction is an on-rails shooter. Blunter still: it's a light-gun game. These days, that's not a style of game serious game players usually gravitate toward. But keeping the genre's inherent restrictions in mind--not to mention the limitations of the Wii hardware -- Extraction is really pretty good, for what it is."

Considering the lack of correlation between Metacritic scores and the sales numbers of Wii games, though -- at least according to Peter Moore -- you probably shouldn't let these numbers get to you too much.
Both humans and alien drones are animated with competent physics and personality that puts High Voltage Software's Quantum3 engine outside the realm of the "GameCube 1.5" criticisms ... The truth is you probably wouldn't bat an eye at The Conduit had it appeared on PC, PS3 or Xbox 360 ... The solid, yet unremarkable single-player won't win any awards, but The Conduit still features the most finely honed online outings available on Wii."

IGN (86): "The Conduit is not a revolutionary first-person shooter, but it's a damned good one ... the title features the tightest, most comfortable control scheme of any console-based first-person shooter to date ... The Conduit features a robust list of modes and maps to play online and nearly 20 weapons to use as you rip through arenas blasting foes ... it's not revolutionary, but The Conduit is a great first-person shooter designed just for Wii owners."

GamePro is promising that its upcoming July issue will blow the doors off of the sequel to 2K's undersea shooter, BioShock. Of course, by the time it hits newsstands, you'll probably be full to the gills with all the the BioShock 2 details you can handle -- we're sure to hear a ton about the game during E3.

Fortunately, GamePro recently offered a delicious morsel to its potential readers, uploading the Big Daddy-infused cover of the upcoming issue to the mag's online edition. You can check out the full cover -- and the design for BioShock 2's diving suit-wearing protagonist -- after the break. As a point of reference, here's the original Big Daddy. And here's a poster for the hilarious, heartfelt Adam Sandler comedy Big Daddy.
Set to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, GamePro -- and parent company IDG -- has made an unexpected announcement: it's getting into the business of publishing games. As reported by GameDaily, the newly formed label, GamePro Labs, will focus on publishing games from independent developers.

The label's official site makes mention of Xbox 360, PC, Zune, iPhone and PlayStation Network platforms, but is light on specific release plans. Game submissions are being accepted, although GamePro does say it will only be publishing a limited number of tiles each year. The company will act as a sort of "middleman" between indie devs and platformer holders, in addition to handling payouts and "regular promotion in GamePro Magazine." The latter hopefully refers to ad space and not any sort of paid editorial consideration. Titles from three currently signed developers will be announced at GDC later this month.

GamePro has also announced plans to produce a free, custom edition of its magazine for distribution exclusively at 7-Eleven stores. The convenience chain began selling games last year (and breaking street dates on them shortly thereafter).

Concurrent with these departures is the arrival of Ziff Davis's Marci Yamaguchi Hughes as executive vice president and general manager.

GamePro Senior Vice President and Executive Creative Director George Jones told GameDaily that the shifts were a "weird confluence of events that aren't related at all." He said that the publication is "in a really good place now," especially since the loss of major multiplatform competitor Electronic Gaming Monthly.

Remember when Ziff Davis went bankrupt last year, and said it wasn't actually bad news for its magazines? We're hoping that this isn't a similar situation, and that those two executives really did leave at the same time for basically no reason.
Two GamePro executives leave amid news that everything is great originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 17:31:00 EST. While GamePro is sharing the goods on Resistance 2 in its latest issue, we know that not everyone is a fan of getting their game news off the rack so we thought we'd share the first couple of screens from the magazine's cover story. Posted by the PlayStation Blog, the shots give us a look at Chimera-occupied Chicago as well as the city's resident boss, a massive 300-foot Leviathan. Honestly, we don't know if we're more excited to collect the Trophy for dropping this baddie, or simply watch him rip through downtown, Cloverfield-style.

Gallery: Resistance 2 (7/3/08)

See Resistance 2's Leviathan boss originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Jul 2008 08:00:00 EST. Let's not mince words, Insomniac's Resistance 2 is sure to be one of Sony's heaviest hitters during E3 later this month. But if you can't wait for what is sure to be minutes devoted to the Trophy-enabled shooter during Sony's pre-show festivities, you might want to take a peek at what GamePro has in store for its latest issue, which features a fold-out cover of the above art, with war-themed propaganda on the back. Nice!

Among the details promised, the mag will offer a look at the game's campaign, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, as well as a gaze skyward at a towering 300-foot tall Chimera that besets Chicago as the game's first end-level nasty. As you may already know, GamePro has scored an exclusive feature for Resistance 2. The issue, which should be hitting newsstands and subscribers soon, features a massive three page-wide cover -- a massive panoramic piece of Resistance 2 art. However, more intriguing than the cover is the great promo art featured on the back. Made to look like early sensational newspapers (think The Inquirer), these fake ads talk about the upcoming fight against the Chimera and link to the not-yet-functional getawarjob.com. We're expecting a fun "ilovebees-esque" ARG experience through this new effort. Stay tuned.
The full Resistance 2 GamePro cover revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 15:00:00 EST. When magazines compete, you win. EGM may have secured the exclusive cover story on Killzone 2, but GamePro has the details on the other big PS3 FPS game, Resistance 2. Insomiac's 60-player FPS promises a new epic story, and an almost mind-numbing amount of multiplayer functionality. GamePro isn't just content with providing a preview and tons of juicy hype text ("Better than Halo. Bigger than Call of Duty" is proudly featured on the cover). No, they're going to do much more than that. They're giving away free codes to the Resistance 2 beta. Not every issue will be a winner, but this is the first opportunity the general public will have at getting into the beta. We're sure other methods of entry will pop up (Qore, anyone?). But for those that cannot resist, the next issue of GamePro is one to look out for.

[Thanks, Ether02!]
Next GamePro features Resistance 2, will give beta codes originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Jun 2008 19:00:00 EST. With the GamePro Halo Wars cover story on shelves for a while now, the magazine has seen fit to post a (less robust) preview on their website. It's a good read for anyone who can't get their hands on the magazine (or those who don't care to do so).

While a good portion of the article is spent rehashing the genesis of the game and how hard Ensemble is working to make it true to the Halo universe -- seriously, we get it now -- there are a few choice nuggets to be found. Units have both primary and secondary fire modes for one. As an example the article notes that marines typically use assault rifles but can also toss grenades -- on command -- if the situation calls for it. Also, the article notes that micromanagement of the in-game economy -- a common practice in most RTS games -- is basically non-existent thanks to the all-consuming unit of currency, which is simply dubbed 'supplies.' Finally, another nod to streamlining the genre for consoles, Ensemble notes that it took 10 minutes to create a sizable force in early builds of Halo Wars, whereas now it takes "about 10 seconds."

We're fairly sure we're not alone when we say that we really hope there's a playable build of Halo Wars at E3 next month.
GamePro Halo Wars article now online originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Jun 2008 17:50:00 EST. Some new Halo Wars information has trickled out of the latest issue of GamePro, including news that the game will support Xbox Live multiplayer with up to six players as well as two-player online co-op. The magazine also reveals new UNSC units such as the Vulture, Cyclops and Cobras and the game's current control scheme. Fan site Halo Wars Addict has created a handy chart for your perusal.

You can check out the scans via Salad Hats or, better yet, pick up a legitimate copy of GamePro on newsstands. Halo Wars is expected to deploy in October.

[Via X3F]
Continue reading Halo Wars to have online co-op, 6-player Xbox Live matches

Halo Wars to have online co-op, 6-player Xbox Live matches originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Jun 2008 17:00:00 EST. And now we're pleased to make it known that leaked magazine scans have finally made it online and do offer up a rather satisfying dose of Halo Wars newsness.

Halo Wars Addict posted scans of all ten pages of GamePro's Halo Wars article (you know, for those outside the States who can't view the magazine's contents any other way ...) and inside we learn about the game's current control scheme, new UNSC vehicles including Vultures, Cyclops and Cobras as well as mention that the campaign will be a combination of human and Covenant worlds. Also, even more exciting is confirmation that Halo Wars will boast six player Xbox Live multiplayer AND feature two person online co-op as well!
GamePro has revealed the cover of their July issue, which contains new information on Halo Wars. According to GamePro's website, the article will feature new details regarding the Covenant and Spartans as well as new vehicles including prototype Elephants, Wolverines and Vultures. While we're certainly excited about the new Halo Wars details, what's even more interesting is that the cover also states that the article will discuss Halo Chronicles. Fans will recognize the name as one of the rumored titles for Peter Jackson's Halo project. Hopefully the article has some real details regarding the game because, thus far, we've got bupkis.

Though forum rumors indicate that Metal Gear Solid 4 is racking up an impressive average review score from European outlets, the only "on the record" review (read: tracked in Metacritic or Game Rankings) thus far belongs to PlayStation Official Magazine UK which awarded Kojima's opus a perfect 10/10. Of course, some moaned about how unsurprising it was to see an "official" magazine dropping tens on a PS3-exclusive so, in the interest of presenting an opposing viewpoint from a non-European multiplatform outlet, we direct your attention towards GamePro's review.

Like POM UK, GamePro isn't being stingy with the praise, pinning a glowing 5/5 review on MGS4's lapel, while calling it "one of the greatest games of all time." Oh, but it doesn't stop there. Here's just a handful of our favorite bits:

"This is videogame storytelling at its absolute best, and represents a new high watermark for the craft, easily surpassing the superb BioShock and the subversive Grand Theft Auto IV."

"MGS4 has that effect on players, effectively blurring, if not erasing, the line that divides games and cinema. It's an absolutely remarkable achievement."

"But if you have access to an HDTV, MGS4 will show you the bleeding edge of video game graphics."

"It sets new standards for graphics, sound, gameplay, and storytelling, and it may be years before it is equalled, let alone surpassed."

"You will not play a better game this year - maybe even this decade."

Check out the entire review in this month's GamePro which, we presume, should be on store shelves or in your mailbox any day now.

[Thanks, Kris]
GamePro: MGS4 'one of the greatest games ever' originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 May 2008 10:24:00 EST. With GDC less than two weeks away, the latest issue of GamePro magazine appears to have coverage of the as-yet-unannounced Gears of War 2. The cover of the March issue was recently unveiled, and while the featured story is Rainbow Six Vegas 2, the cover contains two references to coverage of the much-hinted but never confirmed Gears sequel.

Despite the twice-over placement on the front cover, the announcement of the issue makes no mention of any Gears of War coverage, leaving us a bit skeptical of what the Gears 2 content exactly is. An unconfirmed report from the NeoGAF forums indicates that the content is purely speculative, guessing at a release date and possible features like improved matchmaking.

Add this to the fact that legitimate Gear of War 2 info would be far more cover-worthy than Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and the likelihood is that the Gears placement on the front cover is nothing more than an attempt to sell more issues. We'll leave Gears 2 speculation to accidental slip-ups and Amazon pre-order pages, thankyouverymuch.

Update: Epic Games VP Mark Rein has confirmed our suspicions, telling Firing Squad that any preview article hinted at by Gamepro's cover would be "pure nonsense."
Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

Since we bemoaned Advance Wars: Days of Ruin's lacking marketing push last week, Nintendo has kept us holed up in our bomb shelter, walls trembling and lights flickering as wave after wave of advertisements, massive shells blasted from Leo Burnett's distant dreadnoughts, pound the smoking city above.

Here's every salvo we've been hit with in just the past week:

an official web site launch (with new media)

media-heavy previews and several interviews with Nintendo's localization team

two promotional emails sent out to Nintendo's online newsletter subscribers

a launch event held earlier today at the Nintendo World Store (New York City)

television commercials on both network and cable channels

a two-page ad running in at least three video game magazines -- GamePro, Game Informer, and Electronic Gaming Monthly

We stand, crumbs of concrete falling from our hair, corrected. As we promised in our last installment, we're taking a look at that two-page magazine ad for Days of Ruin, a print piece which features flattering quotes from three online video game sites.
Continue reading Promotional Consideration: Quote-based strategy II

Promotional Consideration: Quote-based strategy II originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 20 Jan 2008 17:00:00 EST.
As if having the words "Orcs & Elves" emblazoned on your DS isn't enough to get you made fun of at school/the office by fantasy-hating jocks/co-workers, id Software went the extra mile and slapped on some dragon artwork onto this customized system to multiply its dorkiness rating tenfold. Oh, and the John Carmack autograph on the lid is sure to bring in a few putdowns, too: "Who is this John guy supposed to be? Your boyfriend?" So what if he is?

Thankfully, we won't ever have to worry about Alisha heckling us for carrying one of these around, as only two were made, and they've both already been given away as part of a recent GamePro contest. We just might end up printing out a similar decal for our own DS, however -- the idea of designing our handheld to match the dragon posters we've put up in our cubicle is too tempting.
Orcs & Elves & a John Carmack autograph originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Dec 2007 20:00:00 EST. GamePro has put together a graph showing the NPD data on Nintendo's Gamecube and PlayStation 3 sales for their first 10 months after launch. The chart shows how in North America the PS3 sold 1.7 million units in its 10 months since launch compared to the GameCube's 2.2 million. Those that have already sent their rage into overdrive see the implication of this graph as the PS3 will "fail" like the Gamecube. Last week it was a 3DO comparison, this week it's the Gamecube. Although one can easily argue that the PS3 is neither.

Sure the PS3 started rocky, lost assumed exclusives left and right, and Sony can't seem to craft a solid message to save its life. But the PlayStation is still a strong brand that should be able to rectify itself with a competitive price adjustment and some solid titles creating a base for the gaming console. Hopefully Sony can get that line on the graph to start moving up again. They're in no rush, they've got ten years.

[Via PS3 Fanboy]
GamePro graphs PS3 and Gamecube sales originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 03 Oct 2007 11:30:00 EST. A lot of people are seemingly comparing the PS3 to a number of other systems. First, it was a 3DO. Now, it's a Gamecube. GamePro took ten months of NPD data and made an intriguing graph showing the sales for both the PS3 and the Gamecube. Although Nintendo's last-gen system featured a number of genre-defining hits, such as Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4, it failed to capture the same market share as its competitors. The current momentum of PS3 seems to suggest that Sony's system may meet the same fate, if it continues to follow its current trend.

There are differences, of course. Gamecube had a relatively short life span, with Nintendo reusing the technology in its currently best-selling Wii console. Sony has stated a potential ten-year life cycle for PS3, one that suggests they're planning for a much longer life cycle than that of the Gamecube.

Although a price cut and a redesigned system may revitalize sales, Sony could always follow Nintendo's footsteps in the years to come: simply duct-tape two PS3s together and call it the PS4.
GamePro compares PS3 sales to those of Gamecube originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Oct 2007 17:00:00 EST. In a thorough interview with GamePro, Dylan Jobe talked about the hard decision to make Warhawk a multiplayer-only title, and things learned from the beta. A fascinating read, to be sure, and we hope you take a chance to check out GamePro's complete interview.

One thing that stood out to us was Incognito's plans for downloadable content. "It's not content that we cut to hold back and later jam down the throats of players," he says. "What we do with our downloadable content is to look at the feedback from players and develop content that supplements their experience, not just rehashes stuff that we perhaps descoped previously."

The beta revealed many things that the team wants to add to the game, but simply hasn't found the time. "We were able to collect a lot of feedback from the beta. There were a lot of really great ideas that it was to late to incorporate, but we ear marked to perhaps come back to it and put it in future." Additional brainstorming ideas will undoubtedly come back from fans and players like you. "We also have a team that will scour all of the forums for Warhawk feedback on Warhawk.com so that we can make sure that our first outing of downloadable content matches what players want." Of course, we think players want to know: when will downloadable content arrive ... and how much will it cost?
Dylan Jobe talks Warhawk, downloadable content, more originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 14:00:00 EST. Is 60GB (or 80GB) simply not enough space for your PS3? We know it's easy to swap PS3's hard drive ... but GamePro's picture-by-picture guide makes the process even easier. The tools required are simple: Husky Precision Screwdriver, external hard drive or USB thumb drive (for copying over files), and a 2.5" SATA laptop drive. Thanks to the XMB's easy to use interface, the process of copying over files and formatting the new PS3 drive is a cinch. Maybe you'll want to throw in a new 160GB hard drive into your PS3? They only go for about $100 these days.

[Via digg]
GamePro guide makes PS3 hard drive install easy originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 02 Aug 2007 15:15:00 EST. We're pretty sure that no one calls the PSP a failure anymore. In fact, over the past few months, as more and more games release on our handheld, we've seen less and less flame comments from rabid DS fans -- maybe they realized that two handhelds can happily coexist?

Courtesy of GamePro, here's a list of the ten worst selling handhelds of all time. Thankfully, Sony's PSP is nowhere close to being on the list:

Gizmondo (<25,000 sold)

Zodiac (<200,000)

Game.com (<300,000)

Lynx (<500,000)

Nomad (1 million)

NEC Turbo Express (1.5 million)

Neo-Geo Pocket (2 million)

GBA Micro (2.5 million)

N-Gage (3 million)

Game Gear (11 million)

PSP has sold at least twice the amount of the Game Gear, and with the redesign coming out later this year, the system will sell plenty more. (Too bad the Neo-Geo Pocket didn't do as well ...)
[Via digg]
Ten handhelds that suffered a fate far worse than ours originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 30 Jul 2007 21:40:00 EST. Regardless, they still are fascinating reads on technology and where our beloved <strike>full-time job</strike> hobby is headed. Gamepro recently questioned a developer tasked with high-profile PS3 ports from Xbox 360 code and the response was unsurprisingly, "nobody wants to touch that issue right now." Can't say we blame them. It's becoming increasingly complex a situation, with console exclusives falling by the wayside as publishers strive to get the most out of their investment. Scans from the new issue of GamePro magazine have found their way onto The Final Fight forums. Revealed are pictures and details of the Brute Chopper (it's a motorcycle, not a helicopter) and customization options for changing the look of your Spartan (and maybe Elite?) beyond just a palette swap.

Also in the scans:

New details on the sword (now with batteries) and a scope-less Magnum.

A player-operated second turret added to the Wraith.

A radar jammer item, which works just as the name suggests

Multiplayer maps Shrine, Epitath, Last Resort (reportedly an upgraded version of Halo 2's Zanzibar) and a mystery map

The images are low resolution, but we're betting higher-quality scans will hit the internets shortly as the latest issue trickles out to subscribers and newsstands. Update: higher-res scans (thanks, zizzy).
Having come to the company only two months before the tumultuous PS3 launch, Karraker had quite an insurmountable task to face: combat the growing negativity surrounding the PlayStation brand and convince a questioning populace the value of an expensive $600 console. In an interview with GamePro, Karraker admits the job isn't easy. However, he thinks that the console's future success is nearly guaranteed: "I am pretty sure if you asked just about any real gamer out there if they would like to have a PS3, their answer would be a resounding 'Yes!'"

Negative perceptions of PS3 can be seen within our own comments section, where Xbox advocates preach about the so-called downfall of Sony. This kind of attitude seems self-perpetuating on the internet, especially when internet media incorporates the negative spin into their reporting: "I think a lot of this goes back to the proliferation of the Internet, where a very vocal minority can make a lot of noise and potentially alter perceptions of the masses, whether they are accurate or not. A lot of this, naturally, is driven by the media who seem focused on taking swipes at us lately, without taking in the full picture."

So what can Sony and Karraker do to help gamers start understanding Sony's approach to the next generation of gaming? The games and hardware should speak for themselves. "A lot of the perceptions are not justified and seem fueled by people who don't have all the facts or have some kind of axe to grind. I think you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn't say PS3 is an amazing piece of technology."
The challenges of being Sony's PR man originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 May 2007 09:30:00 EST. Although his claims may be boisterous at times, we can't help but join in his excitement for the future of PS3. Sure, we've heard the song and dance before: PS3 is a system of potential. As the system continues to grow, it will offer and more and more. For example, the PLAYSTATION Network is going to expand. In a recent interview with GamePro, Tretton reveals that the system will become so expansive, "almost to the point of being overwhelming."

The Network will not only feature downloadable on-demand movies, but it will also have a vast supply of games as well. "We have 41 games in development devoted to the Network, not just talking about PSone games being enabled. We're talking about games developed specifically for the PS3."

So when is it going to happen? "So, really it will happen this fall ... we'll get there well before the holiday timeframe. Every month you'll just see more and more content on there it'll get to the point where it's be really rich by September. And I think that will be timed really nicely with the advent of Home as well."
PLAYSTATION Network to become "overwhelming" soon originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 19 May 2007 15:00:00 EST. Though mention of Gamepro's E for All Expo may prompt you to envision a discreet gathering of drug dealers or a wild party where people bash each other over the head with giant foam letters, the truth is that entertainment will be the only thing being distributed. With Nintendo acting as a "flagship" for the October event, many expect it to replace the glitz and clamor of E3, with the exception of it being open to all. All with at least $50 in hand, of course.

Speaking to Gamespot last week, IDG World Expo vice president and show organizer, Mary Dolaher, revealed the exact pricing of the different entry tickets. How <strike>Mary</strike> <strike>Dolahers</strike> many dollars are you expected to part with, exactly? Single day tickets for Thursday and Friday will set you back $50, whereas single day tickets for the weekend go for $75. A four-day pass is set at $110.

Though the precise scope of industry support for the expo has yet to be seen, there are probably more terrible ways to spend $50 in a day. The E For All Expo will run in Los Angeles from 18 October to 21 October, with general admission tickets going on sale in June.

[Via GamesIndustry.biz]
E for All expo ticket prices set originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 02 Apr 2007 20:54:00 EST. Games.net published their list of the obvious members of this "love to hate" club and go into some detail about how they can turn the hate around. The honored members are:

Sony

EA

ESRB

Gamestop

Gamepro Magazine

Xbox Live Marketplace

The ESRB being on this list is a little awkward. The ratings board is actually a defense against legislation within the industry. It's also far more open and obvious than the Motion Picture Association of America's rating system. The marketplace also makes an odd appearance due to their recent gaming drought, but that's got nothing to do with loving to hate. The other members of this group have a history of hate; let's hope they turn it around.
Love to hate you baby: Gaming's public enemies originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Mar 2007 18:13:00 EST. When asked about the possibility of developing for the Xbox 360, Kojima states that he is interested in the idea, and notes that the 360 is selling very well in areas outside of Japan (in other words, 360=Money). Kojima also says that he's a fan of Gears of War (wonder what his Gamertag is ... BigBoss69 maybe?). Adding fuel to the undying rumor-fire that is Metal Gear Sold 4 on the 360, Kojima uses interesting wording regarding the game, "MGS4 is only for the PS3 so far."

Did you see that? "So far." In PR terms, that leaves many windows open for Metal Gear Solid 4 to appear on other platforms. Granted, it's not an assurance that it will happen, but as hungry fanboys, we'll take what we can get.

[Via Joystiq]
MGS4 creator wants to develop on 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Jan 2007 14:30:00 EST.
