Here we were, thinking -- <em>foolishly</em>, might we add -- that this holiday season might not be packed to the gills with games we're <em>way</em> excited for. And then Ubisoft dropped this walkthrough of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-brotherhood">Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood</a></em> from Gamescom, reminding us that there's one more game to be crazy excited about. <br />
<br />
Did someone say "war horse?" Yep, the narrator of the walkthrough certainly did. In addition to all the other new stuff Ezio can do in <em>Brotherhood</em>, he's able to hop from his horse to others -- including the war horse, one of several new horse types. If that doesn't get your pulse going, you may have already been assassinated. Head past the break for the entire video.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/27/assassins-creed-brotherhood-gameplay-walkthrough-readies-us-fo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Video: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood gameplay walkthrough</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/27/assassins-creed-brotherhood-gameplay-walkthrough-readies-us-fo/">Video: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood gameplay walkthrough</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. While most booths at Gamescom relied on the games themselves to attract visitor attention, there were plenty of booths that went to some ridiculous lengths to stand out from the crowd. Take the above picture, which was set up to promote some sort of tractor simulation that's apparently popular in Germany. And that was actually one of the <em>more </em>game-related booths we captured for the odd gallery below. And you thought Gamescom was all about the games. You're so <em>silly.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-2010s-weirdest-booth-promotions/">Gamescom 2010's weirdest booth promotions</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-2010s-weirdest-booth-promotions/#3288427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/img6703_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-2010s-weirdest-booth-promotions/#3288428"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/img6705_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-2010s-weirdest-booth-promotions/#3288429"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/img6713_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-2010s-weirdest-booth-promotions/#3288430"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/img6726_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-2010s-weirdest-booth-promotions/#3288431"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/img6733_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/the-weirdest-booth-attractions-of-gamescom-2010/">The weirdest booth attractions of Gamescom 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 04:00:00 EST. As if some sort of <em>portal </em>through the internet has opened, a series of new screenshots from <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Portal-2">Portal 2</a> </em>just materialized from the game's creator, Valve Software. They're from Gamescom, which obviously means they came <em>all the way</em> from Germany -- but thanks to Aperture technology, arrived instantaneously. Pretty neat, huh?<br />
<br />
These latest shots showcase more of the game's new fluid dynamics, drastically improved lighting and, of course, Weighted Companion Cubes. All things that we'll be experiencing in playable form <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/portal-2-will-triumph-on-feb-9-2011/">on February 9, 2011</a>.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/portal-2-gamescom/">Portal 2 (Gamescom)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/portal-2-gamescom/#3289675"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/spcolotbeampaint0241_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/portal-2-gamescom/#3289676"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/spcolotbeampaint0292_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/portal-2-gamescom/#3289677"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/spsabotagedarkness0196_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/portal-2-gamescom/#3289678"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/spsabotagedarkness0258_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/portal-2-gamescom/#3289679"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/spsabotagedarkness0281_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/peer-into-these-new-portal-2-screens/">Peer into these new Portal 2 screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 19:40:00 EST. Given the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/gamescom-2010-grows-to-254-000-attendees/">hundreds of thousands of people who turned out for Gamescom 2010</a>, the number of cosplayers in attendance was surprisingly small. Or maybe it wasn't surprising, given that this year's show didn't even encourage the costumed patrons with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/cosplay-record-attempt-fails-at-gamescom-guinness-believes-a-tg/">a feeble world record attempt</a> or anything.<br />
<br />
As you browse this collection of photos, see if you can spot:

    <li>A character that is usually not seen eating popcorn eating some popcorn</li>
    <li>Link pulling a reverse-Michael-Jackson (you'll know it when you see it)</li>

The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> awards have been handed out by an "expert jury" from the publishing and media sector, with <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> taking the "Best of Gamescom" award. Unlike the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/06/3ds-and-rage-are-big-winners-of-e3-2010-game-critics-awards/">E3 Game Critics Awards</a>, which is a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/29/rage-leads-game-critics-awards-nominees-for-e3-2010/">collaborative effort by outlets you've heard of</a>, the Gamescom accolades appear to come from <a href="http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/en/gamescom/presse/presseinformationen/gc_pressinformationen.php?aktion=pfach&amp;p1id=kmpresse_gamescom_e&amp;format=html&amp;base=&amp;tp=k3context&amp;search=&amp;pmid=kmeigen.kmpresse_1282322757&amp;start=0&amp;anzahl=10&amp;channel=kmeigen&amp;language=e&amp;archiv=">six folks</a> whose names we don't quite (be polite, be polite!) ... <em>recognize</em>.<br />
<br />
The short list of winners selected by the brotzeit club were:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Best of Gamescom: <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH)</li>
    <li>Hardware accessories: PlayStation Move (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH)</li>
    <li>Console games:<strong> </strong><em>Gran Turismo 5</em> (Sony Computer Entertainment Deutschland GmbH)</li>
    <li>Mobile games: <em>Super Scribblenauts</em><b> </b>(Warner Bros. Games)</li>
    <li>Online games: <em>Guild Wars 2</em><b> </b>(NCsoft West)</li>
    <li>PC games<em><b>: </b>Crysis 2</em><b> </b>(Crytek GmbH)</li>
    <li>Best of Family Entertainment: <em>Kirby's Epic Yarn</em> (Nintendo of Europe GmbH)</li>
</ul>
Those are certainly some adequate choices, but considering the international presence and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/23/gamescom-2010-grew-to-254-000-attendees/">size</a> of the show, it would seem prudent that the Gamescom awards seek out a better mix and quantity of judges for future shows.<br />

It's pretty safe to say that in its second year <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> has not only established itself as the premier European gaming event, with 254,000 visitors (up 9,000), but as a global one as well. Event organizers were obviously pleased with the show's size and the growing presence of international companies. <br />

Gamescom 2011 is already set for Cologne from August 17 - 21. Watching two of the world's greatest leaders debating politics and strategy for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/civilization-v">Civilization 5</a></em> was a highlight of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a>. 2K Games went all out and created clones of Napoleon Bonaparte and Augustus Caesar to check out the game and QA test some strategy. We're sure the duo's feedback to the dev team will be invaluable leading up to the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/11/civilization-5-september-21-2010-release-date/">September 21 launch</a> -- we just hope they're not listening to Napoleon's "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hundred_Days">100 days</a>" plan. We already know how that ends, folks.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-5-8-4-10/">Civilization 5 (8/4/10)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-5-8-4-10/#3235535"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/chichen-itza_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-5-8-4-10/#3235536"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/civ-v-hands-on-preview-i_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-5-8-4-10/#3235537"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/civ-v-hands-on-preview-ii_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-5-8-4-10/#3235538"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/civ-v-hands-on-preview-iii_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/civilization-5-8-4-10/#3235539"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/civ-v-hands-on-preview-iv_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/22/seen-gamescom-napoleon-caesar-debate-civ-5-tactics/">Seen @ Gamescom: Napoleon, Caesar debate Civ 5 tactics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 22 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST. The E3 2005 trailer for <em>Killzone 2</em> quickly became well-known (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/killzone-2-versus-killzone-2-video-comparison/">infamous</a>, even) for its supposedly unatainable levels of in-game graphical prowess. But the initial trailer for the game that would become the original <em>Killzone</em> has been much less well known ... until this past week at GDC Europe.<br />
<br />
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in; font-weight: normal; page-break-before: always">Guerilla Games Managing Director Hermen Hulst showed off the circa-1999 concept video in a keynote speech in Cologne earlier this week, calling it a "showcase of technical competence" prepared for their first meeting with Sony. Even though Hulst admits there's "nothing really '<em>Killzone'</em> about it" at this early stage (for instance, the Helghast and their glowing eyes don't even make a cameo appearance) we thought it was an interesting look at the pre-history of one of Sony's biggest exclusive franchises. To see the video in full, follow us past the break.</p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/22/what-killzone-looked-like-before-it-was-killzone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>What Killzone looked like before it was Killzone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/22/what-killzone-looked-like-before-it-was-killzone/">What Killzone looked like before it was Killzone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 22 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. First, the good news: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fighters-uncaged">Fighters Uncaged</a></em> Prodcuer Luc Verdier recognizes that there have been too many casual, family-oriented games announced for the Kinect thus far, and says the game is his attempt to fix this. Now the bad news: based on a recent demo of the game at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a>, <em>Fighters Uncaged</em> utterly fails in this attempt.<br />
<br />
As you can see in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/video/d5481fd7">this live demonstration video</a>, the movement recognition for <em>Fighters Uncaged</em> is far from perfect at this point. Punches can be completely finished and retracted in the real world before they even start in the game, making it hard to string together quick combinations of moves. In fact, Verdier said combos in the final game would actually be activated using a quick-time event system, asking players to string together preset poses for an unblockable chain of attacks. A similar match-the-on-screen-pose system is already in place to dodge or block incoming attacks, and feels incredibly unwieldy.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-uncaged/">Fighters Uncaged</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-uncaged/#3272945"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/fighters-uncaged-screenshot-1-coach_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-uncaged/#3272943"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/fighters-uncaged-screenshot-1b-coach_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-uncaged/#3272941"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/fighters-uncaged-screenshot-2-el-luchador_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-uncaged/#3272942"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/fighters-uncaged-screenshot-2b-el-luchador_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fighters-uncaged/#3272940"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/fighters-uncaged-screenshot-3-jawbreaker_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/22/preview-fighters-uncaged/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Preview: Fighters Uncaged</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/22/preview-fighters-uncaged/">Preview: Fighters Uncaged</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 22 Aug 2010 13:30:00 EST. THQ may be the company publicly pushing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/thq-announces-udraw-game-tablet-for-wii/">the recently announced uDraw tablet controller for the Wii</a>, but a presentation of the new technology at Gamescom this week emphasized just how important Nintendo's support was to the device's creation.<br />
<br />
"When we came to [Nintendo] in the beginning with the idea for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/udraw-studio">uDraw</a>, they said 'that's brilliant, let's figure out how to do this,'" THQ director Luis Gigliotti said during a presentation. "It's been an incredible partnership. ... I've been <a href="http://www.mobygames.com/developer/sheet/view/developerId,27618/">working in game development for 17-plus years</a> and I can honestly say this is one of the smoothest collaborations with a first party I've ever had, just because everybody got it on day one."
<div><br />
Gigliotti specifically pointed out that Nintendo's hardware design expertise was key to transforming the monstrous uDraw prototype (nicknamed "Frankenstein" by the THQ team), into the light, sleek unit shown off at the show. "[The prototype] was a like bunch of lasers and mirrors and loose parts, it was wood and it had brass on it," he recalled. "I said, 'There's no way we can get this to something like this [the current hardware] without it costing a fortune.' Nintendo said, 'Don't worry about it. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/spider-man-shattered-dimensions"><em>Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions</em></a> is like a Costco-size sample platter of four different Spidey universes, but Beenox Creative Director Thomas Wilson wouldn't mind focusing on just one of the wall crawlers for a game. During <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> the developer told us that if he could, he would want to focus on Noir or 2099 spidey, but immediately followed it up by saying, "That's not up to us to decide. We're looking with Activision at what's next."<br />
<br />
"They're interesting, they're different, they're new," Wilson told us on why he'd choose the lesser-known dimensions. He continued, "I think it would definitely be something interesting." <em>Pssst</em>, Activision -- we agree.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/21/shattered-dimensions-creative-head-interested-in-noir-or-2099-sp/">Shattered Dimensions creative head interested in Noir or 2099 Spider-Man game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Aug 2010 15:30:00 EST. A LucasArts representative told Joystiq that there may be some tweaks before it's set free, but <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2">Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2</a></em> will be getting a demo that's very similar to what we played at <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a>. We were also told that the forthcoming game's demo will be made available publicly prior to retail launch on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/04/force-unleashed-ii-beaming-down-october-26/">October 26</a>.<br />
<br />
The demo we played begins with returning protagonist Starkiller attempting to escape his cloney confines on Kamino. He plummets down a tower, avoiding obstacles en route, busts through a giant dome, and then fights his way out of the facility. Force pushes, mind tricks, and force lightning follow as the Dark Apprentice redux attempts to steal a Tie Fighter and get off the planet . And it appears there won't be too long of a wait before you try the demo yourself -- that is, if you're not already in Germany attending the public days of Gamescom.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-0/">Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-0/#3097298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/kaminosaber01new_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-0/#3097300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/kaminofreefall01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-0/#3097302"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/flamethrowerimage_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-0/#3097304"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/devine3one4-_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-0/#3097305"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/06/catoforcerepulse01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/21/demo-for-star-wars-the-force-unleashed-2-unchained-before-game/">Demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 unchained before game's release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Aug 2010 14:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left; "><a href="http://www.redspotgames.com">Redspotgames</a>, the small publisher behind relatively recent Dreamcast releases such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/29/brand-new-2d-shmup-dux-released-for-dreamcast/"><em>Last Hope</em></a>, <em><a href="http://www.redspotgames.com/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&amp;productId=10">Rush Rush Rally Racing</a></em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/dreamcast-still-strong-two-new-indie-games-at-leipzig/"><em>Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles</em></a>, says they are looking to continue publishing games for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/15/peter-moore-talks-death-of-the-dreamcast/">long-dead system</a> into next year.</div>
<br />
<div>"We have seen some stuff on the PC, and we [are] talking to to the companies to see if they will agree to release on the Dreamcast," Redspotgames marketing and sales director Adrian Loudero told Joystiq at Gamescom this week. "We also have plans for 2011, maybe a new release, but this is really all I can say right now."</div>
<br />
Loudero told us that Redspotgame only sells a few thousands copies of each new Dreamcast game it releases. As such, the company has recently expanded to WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade development to stay afloat. But he also said that he's heartened by the way the Dreamcast demo units at the company's small Gamescom booth draw double takes and appreciative play from passers-by. "I think the Dreamcast is still famous," he said.<br />
<br />
Asked if he thinks Sega should get back into the Dreamcast game-publishing business, Loudero responded enthusiastically. "Yes, of course, please."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/21/redspotgames-looking-to-continue-publishing-for-dreamcast/">Redspotgames looking to continue publishing for Dreamcast</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 21 Aug 2010 12:30:00 EST. Runic Games had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/10/runic-games-dreams-of-xbla-torchlight/">dreams</a> of putting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/torchlight"><em>Torchlight</em></a> on Xbox Live Arcade, then it put "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/10/runic-games-putting-serious-effort-into-console-torchlight/">serious effort</a>" into a console version, and now the studio is hoping to have the game out by this holiday for PSN and XBLA. Runic CEO Max Schaefer told Joystiq at <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> today, "We're trying, we're talking [to Sony and Microsoft] and we hope to get that done quickly." Although there's no release window, he told us it'll "hopefully" be available "by the holidays."<br />
<br />
Schaefer also told us the game has now sold over 750,000 units and is en route to a million. The RPG reached the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/18/torchlight-sales-surpass-500-000-units/">half-million milestone</a> back in May after launching in October, following a tiny development time of 10 months. If the sales figure seems a bit low, the executive mentioned that piracy has been an issue, but they have no way of tracking how many illegal copies were made.<br />
<br />
As for <em>Torchlight 2</em> on consoles, Schaefer told us Runic will "try" to get the multiplayer sequel to consoles sometime after the PC and Mac release.<br />

Like many Wii games before it, the upcoming revival of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/goldeneye-007">Goldeneye 007</a></em> supports a number of different controllers. You'll be able to play with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, the Classic Controller, a GameCube controller or even the Wii Zapper. But surely one of these myriad methods must be the preferred control scheme among the development team, right?<br />
<br />
Well, no, not really. "There's a house divided, at least amongst ourselves," said Activision production coordinator Graham Hagmaier while presenting a demo of the game at Gamescom this week. "A lot of us play with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. I prefer this particular scheme [the Classic Controller], just because I used to play a lot of FPS games on [the Xbox] 360 and PS3, and for a lot of people those are very popular formats. But it just depends on your proficiency with the controller."<br />

Since shortly after the Wii Remote first brought motion control to the masses, we've known that over-enthusiastic use (and slippery hands) can lead to controllers (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/29/wii-have-a-problem-an-accident-archive/">and other things</a>) getting broken. So what happens when Kinect's 3D camera turns your entire body into the controller? Well, not surprisingly, it turns out <em>you're</em> the one that could get broken.<br />
<br />
"Versus mode was a bit too dangerous," <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/fighters-uncaged">Fighters Uncaged</a></em> producer Luc Verdier said when asked about a competitive mode for his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/18/ubisoft-announces-fighters-uncaged-for-kinect-why-were-they/">newly announced</a> Kinect-enabled fighting game. "It's possible to do, but people just end up hitting each other." Thus, the game's only multiplayer mode is a cooperative battle, where two players work together against the artificial intelligence.<br />
<br />
Of course, people don't usually end up killing one another while playing games like <em>Just Dance</em>, even if four players are moving about in an enclosed space. But Verdier said motion-controlled games where multiple players are synchronized are safer than games where the players can just "do whatever." We'd also hazard to guess that dancing players just tend to be less intentionally violent than fighting game players, especially when those fighting game players are actively playing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/overheard-gamescom-competitive-kinect-fighting-is-dangerous/">Overheard @ Gamescom: Competitive Kinect fighting is dangerous</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 18:30:00 EST. In fact, an eyes-on walkthrough of the game's Jungle level at Gamescom this week showed off just how much first-person-shooter game design has changed in the last 13 years.<br />
<br />
The changes were incredibly apparent right from the start, when the developers guiding the demo sneaked up behind a guard and took him out with the kind of close-quarters combat neck-snap you might expect to see in <a href="http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NeckSnap">every bit of pop culture ever</a> (but not the original <em>Goldeneye</em>). Taking out two more guards with headshots ensured that the alarm wouldn't be raised and the game could remain a <em>Splinter Cell-</em>style stealth experience for at least a while longer.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/goldeneye-7-16-2010/">GoldenEye 007 (7/16/2010)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/goldeneye-7-16-2010/#3179296"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/damfirefight_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/goldeneye-7-16-2010/#3179297"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/bondjump_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/goldeneye-7-16-2010/#3179298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/facility1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/goldeneye-7-16-2010/#3179299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/facility2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/goldeneye-7-16-2010/#3179300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/07/guards_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/preview-goldeneye-007-single-player/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Preview: Goldeneye 007 (single player)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/preview-goldeneye-007-single-player/">Preview: Goldeneye 007 (single player)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 18:00:00 EST. Of the six different sports available on the menu, only downhill skiing and boxing were available to play.<br />
<br />
The skiing game was enjoyable enough, detecting slight variations in my lean to guide the on-screen skier down a pretty basic hill. The experience felt much smoother and more natural than similar games designed for the Wii balance board, which I usually find a bit twitchy in skiing simulations. I liked how the game recognized a low crouch as a way to improve aerodynamic speed, and how swooshing my arms at any time resulted in a satisfying ski pole push. Aside from some frequent graphical glitches (which made my skier look like he was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKtpJW9pg84">showing off the bottom of his shoe</a>), the demo was a great proof of concept. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motionsports-gamescom-2010/">MotionSports (Gamescom 2010)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motionsports-gamescom-2010/#3275008"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/motionsportssoccer_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motionsports-gamescom-2010/#3275009"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/motionsportsskiing_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motionsports-gamescom-2010/#3275010"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/motionsportslogo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motionsports-gamescom-2010/#3275011"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/motionsportshang-gliding_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motionsports-gamescom-2010/#3275012"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/08/motionsportsfootball_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/preview-motionsports-kinect/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Preview: MotionSports (Kinect)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/preview-motionsports-kinect/">Preview: MotionSports (Kinect)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 16:30:00 EST. At Gamescom, a THQ representative told Joystiq that the company may opt to give the game away as a pre-order bonus for <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/red-faction-armageddon">Red Faction: Armageddon</a></em>. <br />
<br />
"No price yet," the rep said. "They are talking about possible pre-order specials. It's possible, hasn't been finalized yet, that if you pre-order Armageddon you may be able to toss this in as well. They obviously want to keep it as low as possible." Barring that, he said, THQ hopes to sell it for 400-800 Microsoft Points ($5-10). The freebie strategy fits with THQ core games VP Danny Bilson's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/11/thq-developing-downloadable-games-based-on-core-brands/">strategy</a> to use downloadable games to extend its brands.<br />
<br />
In addition, the representative offered additional details on the downloadable title's planned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/thq-reveals-dlc-for-red-faction-battlegrounds/">DLC</a>. "Two downloadable packs," he said, "one ties into the [<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/red-faction-origins-movie-to-debut-on-syfy-in-march-2011/">Red Faction: Origins</a></em>] miniseries ... it also has a <em>Armageddon</em> DLC pack."<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/20/thq-wants-red-faction-battlegrounds-to-be-free-or-at-least-che/">THQ wants Red Faction: Battlegrounds to be free, or at least cheap</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 15:30:00 EST. That means that, in North America at least, <em>DJ Hero</em> will have one full week to shine (and sell) before <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3">Rock Band 3</a></em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/rock-band-3-going-pro-october-26-pre-order-bonuses-announced/">appears</a> and begins tempting shoppers with keytars.<br />

You probably use a washing machine on the regular -- at least, we <em>hope </em>you do -- but you may not have known that the gentle rinse cycle isn't the only trick up the bulky metal box's sleeve. Those delightful little rabbids managed to find the time travel setting in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/raving-rabbids-travel-in-time"><em>Raving Rabbids: Travel in Time</em></a>, taking a hilarious jaunt back to Rome in the trailer past the break. <br />
<br />
Feel free to take your own trip past the break to check out the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a> trailer. We've also got some new screens in the gallery below. Details on Sony and Nihilistic's motion-sensitive meeting of the mascot minds, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/heroes-on-the-move"><em>Heroes on the Move</em></a>, have been scarce since the game was first announced at E3. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> filled in some of the missing pieces: Players will be able to choose between Ratchet, Clank, Sly Cooper, Bentley, Jak and Daxter, who will then be able to engage in various challenges across each character's native environs, such as Metropolis, Paris and Haven City.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/08/19/heroes-on-the-move-new-trailer-two-challenges-debut-at-gamescom/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PSBlog+%28PlayStation.Blog%29">PlayStation.Blog revealed</a> what some of these challenges might entail, such as "City of Fights," which sees Sly collecting orbs across Paris while fending off enemies from all three universes, or "Fistful of Crystals," which tasks Clank with blasting his way through Haven City in a light gun-esque fashion. Check out some new footage in the trailer posted just past the jump, and ponder what might happen should two <em>Heroes</em> from different universes come into physical contact with one another. Got your gloves on? Step into the ring. Your opponent today is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ea-sports-mma"><em>EA Sports MMA</em></a>, an October 15 contender that comes packing a mean gallery of fresh <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom 2010</a> screens. However, its most deadly attack is its online component, demonstrated in a new trailer just past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/grapple-with-some-new-ea-sports-mma-media/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Grapple with some new EA Sports MMA media</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/grapple-with-some-new-ea-sports-mma-media/">Grapple with some new EA Sports MMA media</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 21:30:00 EST. "The team had a lot of experience and knew a lot about making a game for PSP which is why we chose PSP as the platform for this game," said Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase during a presentation at Gamescom in regards to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-third-birthday"><em>The 3rd Birthday</em></a>. "But if this game turns out to be a success then we'd be looking at extending the franchise into PS3." <br />
<br />
Now, Kitase could mean one of two things by that statement: Square Enix <em>could</em> develop an entirely new <em>Parasite Eve</em> game for the PS3; or he could be talking about re-releasing the first two <em>Parasite Eve</em> games as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psone-classics">PSOne Classics</a>. Neither are currently available on PSN, so we're inclined to think that's what he's talking about --<span style="font-style: italic;"> especially</span> considering Square Enix has <a href="http://twitter.com/3rd_birthday/status/20419898705">already expressed interest</a> in going down that road.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/kitase-3rd-birthday-success-could-extend-franchise-to-ps3/">Kitase: 3rd Birthday success could extend franchise to PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 20:00:00 EST. <em>Red Faction</em> is kind of a big deal -- maybe you didn't know? The franchise is getting its fourth full retail game early next year (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/red-faction-armageddon">Red Faction: Armageddon</a></em>), a television tie-in on SyFy (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/red-faction-origins">Red Faction: Origins</a></em>), and even a downloadable title for XBLA, PSN, and PC (<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/red-faction-battlegrounds">Red Faction: Battlegrounds</a></em>). The downloadable property, however, will be getting tied to the other <em>Red Faction</em> ... <em>things</em> in production. Speaking with <a href="http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/8954/thq-reveals-dlc-for-red-faction-battlegrounds-pc-version-being-discussed">StrategyInformer</a>, a THQ rep said that two downloadable content packs will be released for <em>Battlegrounds</em>, one of which contains extra vehicles, while the other will somehow tie to the forthcoming Syfy show.<br />
<br />
Furthermore, Achievements (and presumably Trophies as well) from <em>Battlegrounds</em> will unlock content in <em>Armageddon</em>, though it wasn't made clear what type of content that will be (the <a href="http://ds.joystiq.com/video/7b894ae0">coveted ostrich hammer</a>, perchance?). <em>Battlegrounds</em> will be available sometime in "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/16/red-faction-battlegrounds-announced-for-xbla-psn-by-thq-digita/">early 2011</a>."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/thq-reveals-dlc-for-red-faction-battlegrounds/">THQ reveals DLC for Red Faction: Battlegrounds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 18:31:00 EST. <div><em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/okamiden">Okamiden</a></em> on the DS manages to capture the painterly art style of the PlayStaton 2's (and then the Wii's) beloved <em>Okami</em> while also adding a heavy dollop of adorableness to the mix. This really comes through in some of the animations, such as tiny wolf god Chibiterasu's darling backflip attack, or the way he flails his paws in mid-air, Saturday-morning-cartoon style, before he falls from a collapsing bridge.</div>
<div> </div>
<div><em>Okami</em>'s trademark magical paintbrush is back in the DS game, of course, and the short Gamescom demo showed it being used to manipulate the world in some of the same ways as the original game -- slashing rocks and obstacles in half, circling trees to make them bloom, and building bridges across gaps. Using the stylus to do all these things feels a bit more natural than awkwardly painting with the Wii remote, but was essentially similar.</div>

The original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/littlebigplanet"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a> was billed as a platform for platformers -- but what about those gamers whose favorite entries into that particular genre include <em>Kazooie</em><em>s</em>, <em>Ratchets</em> and <em>Bandicoots</em>? Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans recently revealed to Joystiq at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> that an early build of the original <em>LittleBigPlanet</em> allowed for that kind of 3D gameplay, explaining, "LBP 1 had free depth and completely moving cameras, and the gameplay engine wasn't layered fundamentally."<br />
<br />
Evans added that while the developer "used to make levels that could travel into the screen," this feature was ultimately removed from the game. "It's really unconstrained in 3D. It's really hard -- I mean creatively unconstrained, it's really difficult to have something to push off," Evans explained. "We found our level designers wasted tons of time in 3D land, so we iteratively reduced it, first of all we reduced the scope, then we added the layers, and with each restriction we did, it improved the quality."<br />
<br />
According to Evans, the lack of 3D platforming wasn't due to a technical snafu, but rather, "entirely a game design decision." He added, "so when we go 3D, and I'm assuming at some point we will go 3D, the challenge we will have, and any other user-generated content company -- you know, I want to be one-upped, I'd love to see a fully-3D creation game. I'm not saying it's impossible, I'm saying we haven't cracked it yet." Keep an eye out for our full interview with Evans in the coming days.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/media-molecule-toyed-with-full-3d-level-design-in-first-littlebi/">Media Molecule toyed with full 3D level design in first LittleBigPlanet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 16:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">It's not much, but the image above is the first official glimpse of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/tekken-x-street-fighter"><em>Tekken x Street Fighter</em></a>, the 3D brawler being crafted by Namco (not to be confused with Capcom's 2D <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/street-fighter-x-tekken"><em>Street Fighter x Tekken</em></a>). The image, snagged by <a href="http://www.1up.com/news/ryu-tekken-x-street-fighter">1UP</a>, was shown by <em>Tekken </em>producer Katsuhiro Harada during Gamescom. It's worth noting that Ryu is actually sporting Paul's uniform from the <em>Tekken </em>series, with Harada admitting that the Namco team only had enough time to create the face. Furthermore, Harada stated that the image was pulled directly off of a development unit and still needs things like lighting adjusted.<br />

Enjoy the image, because <em>Tekken x Street Fighter</em> is still over two years away.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/what-ryu-looking-at-ryu-in-tekken-x-street-fighter-of-course/">What Ryu looking at? <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ratchet-and-clank-all-4-one">Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One</a></em> (can you believe they didn't go with <em>Four-play </em>as the subtitle?) feels like a whimsical, cartoon version of <em>Gauntlet</em>. Using a more distant automatic camera, instead of the standard behind-the-back perspective used throughout the series, this <em>Ratchet</em> game introduces four-player cooperation to the franchise -- and that also means crazy four-player destruction, given Insomniac's flair for futuristic weaponry.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/ratchet-and-clank-all-4-one-coming-to-ps3-in-fall-2011/">Announced at Gamescom</a> this week, the game features series regulars Ratchet, Clank, Qwark and Dr. Nefarious in a new story that still fits within the loose continuity built over the years. If you think it's a little <em>too</em> loose, you'll be pleased to learn that Insomniac will release a series of comics that bridges the gap between <em>Ratchet &amp; Clank</em> <em>Future</em> and <em>All 4 One</em>.<br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/insomniac-shares-more-details-on-ratchet-and-clank-all-4-one/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Insomniac shares more details on Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/insomniac-shares-more-details-on-ratchet-and-clank-all-4-one/">Insomniac shares more details on Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 15:00:00 EST. Leave it to the makers of <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> to take all the "cute" out of kart racing. At <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010/">Gamescom</a> this week, Polyphony Digital is showing off the two newest features of the ever-expanding sim racer: <em>incredibly realistic</em> go-karts and a track editor (which were <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/21/gran-turismo-5-includes-track-editor-weather-and-go-karts/">unceremoniously revealed</a> a few months ago). The track editor, dubbed "Course Maker," is described by the EU <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/08/19/a-garage-full-of-new-gran-turismo-5-features/">PlayStation Blog</a> as featuring "a dizzying array of settings to tweak" -- no surprise there! Actually, Yamauchi and company appear to have connected with reality just long enough to pare down the editor to four selectable themes for custom tracks.<br />
<br />
Of course, by not sinking resources into a more full-featured track editor, Polyphony Digital came up with plenty of time to expand <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gran-turismo-5"><em>GT5</em></a> in other directions. Did you know the Photo Travel mode you'll never use now supports 3D images through the use of technology you don't own? Don't worry -- you won't miss out on the complete "racing simulator RPG" that's been added. At least, that's how Yamauchi described the enhanced B-Spec race manager mode, which has you coaching up to six racers and their varying personalities throughout a simulated <em>lifetime</em>.<br />
<br />
"In <em>GT5</em> we have been able to create what I originally intended," Yamauchi said of the updated B-Spec mode during his Gamescom presentation. The team's even created what was originally intended for <em>GT6:</em> kart racing. And why not? <em>Gran Turismo 6</em> could be a while.<br />

Of course, those<em> Metal Gear Solid</em> games in which it was possible to do that also had tranquilizer guns. Does Raiden have a tranquilizer ... sword?<br />
<br />
"When you encounter human resistance you can slice their weapons in half, causing them to run away in fear," <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/111/1114418p1.html">IGN</a> explains. "If you accidentally slice off a hand or two, well, that will be forgiven, we are told." So even if you choose to play that way, you still get to slice a lot of things with your sword. That's a relief! The game is also full of mechanical enemies and watermelons, which can all be safely sliced without damaging your no-kill status.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/metal-gear-solid-rising-doesnt-cut-out-pacifist-play-style/">Metal Gear Solid Rising doesn't cut out pacifist play style</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 13:15:00 EST. A video coming out of Germany's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010">Gamescom</a> convention yesterday may have accidentally revealed a whole mess of unannounced tracks for upcoming rhythm/music title <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3">Rock Band 3</a></em>. During an interview shot by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/GottGameShows">YouTube user GottGamesShow</a> (since taken down), an <em>RB3</em> rep could be seen scrolling through the entire setlist for the game, apparently revealing tracks from John Lennon's "Imagine" to Devo's "Whip It." <br />
<br />
<a href="http://rockbandaide.com/7488/huge-rock-band-3-setlist-leak/">RockBandAide</a> grabbed the whole list before the video went down, which we've dropped for you after the break. And though we've reached out to Harmonix and MTV Games for confirmation, we'd like to point out that, for now, the songs could potentially be future Rock Band Network tracks or simply placeholder. That said, we're hoping they're not -- we're pretty psyched about the two songs we already mentioned, and frankly, it's <em>all about</em> James Brown.<br />
<br />

The first trailer for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/torchlight-2"><em>Torchlight 2</em></a> doesn't dance around the issue: The original <em>Torchlight</em> should have had multiplayer. As such, be prepared to be bombarded by the fact that <em>Torchlight 2</em> <em>does</em> have multiplayer, and that it appears to be a (magical) blast. Basically, the trailer makes 2011 seem <em>really</em> far away.<br />

The demo of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/littlebigplanet-2">LittleBigPlanet 2</a></em> that was shown at Cologne's Gamescom this week was similar to the build shown off <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/17/preview-littlebigplanet-2/">to great effect</a> at E3 a few months ago. But there was one significant level-editing feature that was being demonstrated for the first time here: a music sequencer that's also quite a bit more.<br />
<br />
<em>LittleBigPlanet 2</em> Technical Director Alex Evans demonstrated the sequencer, which lets you arrange notes on a four-measure grid with the beat at the bottom and multiple octaves of notes running vertically. You choose from a selection of instrument samples including a honky tonk piano, acoustic guitar, drum kit, beatbox, and roughly 30 more that were shown in the demo (more are expected for the final game, Evans said). Notes can be built into samples, which can then be repeated and mixed further via a larger timeline object in the level creation screen.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/media-molecule-reveals-littlebigplanet-2s-more-than-just-music/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Media Molecule reveals LittleBigPlanet 2's more-than-just-music sequencer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/media-molecule-reveals-littlebigplanet-2s-more-than-just-music/">Media Molecule reveals LittleBigPlanet 2's more-than-just-music sequencer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 08:00:00 EST. We've been told before that the Xbox 360's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/kinect">Kinect</a> would work when "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/07/kinect-software-will-work-with-seated-players/">an experience is developed with sitting in mind</a>," but we hadn't had the opportunity to really test that. In a Gamescom meeting, where we saw the Kinect version of the Xbox dashboard, we tried out the menu system and movie controls to test its recognition of seated users:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Sitting in a chair: Definitely works.</li>
    <li>Sitting on the floor: Works.</li>
    <li>Reclining while facing the Kinect: Works.</li>
    <li>Reclining with the Kinect at our side: We couldn't get this to work, but we've been told that it will by launch.</li>
    <li>Using another human as a coffee table (should have taken photos!): Kinect recognized the person behind the human coffee table trying to control the movie.</li>
</ul>
According to Microsoft, Kinect was running on an improved version of the software used during E3 in June. The manufacturer is set to make further improvements before the camera's November debut.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/19/kinect-dashboard-navigation-works-while-seated/">Kinect dashboard navigation works while seated</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 07:01:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Hey <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sengoku-basara-samurai-heroes"><em>Sengoku Basra: Samurai Heroes</em></a>, before you release a trailer, ask yourself: Does your halfhearted script and voice-over work combine for an effect remarkably similar to a Gamestop assistant manager giving a pre-order pitch?
