Thanks to an anonymous GameStop manager we now have an internal corporate memo detailing the Xbox 360 Pro's price drop to $299 for this Sunday. We're currently trying to get a better resolution scan, but the whole shebang is detailed in black and white on the page.

We now wait for Microsoft to acknowledge the price drop, which has gone from leaks to full blown flood of retail flyer confirmation.

Even the Kiwis were no match for the armed and fully operational GameStop empire as it acquired New Zealand's largest independent gaming chain. GameDaily reports that New Zealand's The Gamesman will be absorbed into the GameStop collective and bring the company's presence in the country to 38 stores. This news confirms rumors from last month of The Gamesman's demise.

On the bright side, Phil McPhee, general manager of The Gamesman, says the move will "enhance the service and experience for customers." Wow, Gamesman's customer service must have been awful! Good thing it got bought out by GameStop.

Update: New release date confirmed.

Last we heard in March, SOCOM: Confrontation was coming September 16 to PS3. If Gamestop is to be believed, that release date has been pushed back a month to October 14. We wouldn't be surprised if it was true, as our hands-on time with the game recently showed there was still a lot of work to be done. We've put in a call to developer Slant Six for an official response.

Geekpulp reports that New Zealand's largest "100% KIWI owned and managed" gaming store has accepted the warm embrace of the GameStop overlords. The site reports it has been "unofficially" told that the eight Gamesman locations will be converted into EB Games (GameStop) stores by late July.

The site goes on to say that the eight Gamesman locations already have EB Games stores in the area, though the staff have been told that there won't be any job losses. Resistance is futile dear Kiwis, just accept GameStop as the rest of the world has. Now, to enjoy some soylent green for lunch, generously donated by GameStop.

Many froth-mouthed fans of Blizzard's intergalactic real-time strategy masterpiece Starcraft have anxiously been awaiting word on when the next installment of the series would land in their anticipatory laps. Blizz has been characteristically tight-lipped about the title's launch window, though we were recently informed that an online SKU search for Starcraft II on Best Buy, Circuit City, and Gamestop's web sites reveal the same supposed release date of December 3, 2008. With no confirmation from Blizzard, it's far from official -- though we imagine this won't stop dedicated zerglings from dropping by the office tomorrow, and requesting off the last month of the year.

While not as fancy as Konami's midnight launch plans - don't expect Hideo Kojima or David Hayter to walk past the launch line you're standing in - GameStop has released a mega-PDF revealing what stores will be holding midnight launches for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

All in all, there are 1,494 locations listed for US stores (including Puerto Rico), so there's a good chance you can find one near you. As always, customers shouldn't plan on showing up at the launch without a pre-order and expect a copy. We hear this game might be a little bit popular.

We're pretty sure that everyone and their dog played the original Gears of War the first time around (aside from most Border Collies, who are, in fact, devout PS3 fanboys), but if you've yet to divide a competitor using a firearm/lumberjack tool, a Gamestop pre-order listing for a $40 Gears re-release might tickle your fancy. We've yet to hear from Microsoft about details for the title (or a confirmation of the game's existence, for that matter), but as the listing reads "Gears of War with Maps", we can only assume it will contain the Hidden Fronts DLC as well as the Raven Down and Old Bones levels, rather than the hit song by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. With less than a month until the game's supposed release date of June 24, we're sure to hear more soon.

In order to remain competitive with Harmonix's pre-existing multi-instrument rockstar simulator, Activision's upcoming entry in their insanely lucrative franchise, Guitar Hero: World Tour, needs to match the price of the game it so closely resembles, Rock Band. According to a recent listing on Gamestop, it'll do just that -- the game alone will cost $59.99 on PS3 and 360 ($49.99 on Wii and PS2), a "guitar kit" bundle will run you $99.99, and the full band kit (which we assume will contain a guitar, a mic, and a drum kit) will run you $189.99 on 360, Wii and PS3, and $179.99 on PS2.

If these prices are accurate, you'll be paying $20 more for Activision's bundle than Harmonix's -- perhaps their five-piece drum kit costs more to produce than Rock Band's four-head. We don't mind shelling out the extra Jackson to get our hands on Activision's new skins -- the thousands of dollars we'll spend expanding our living room to contain two fake drum kits and four fake guitars, however, may have a noticeable impact on our finances.

GameStop reported $62.1 million in earnings (a 151% increase) year-over-year for its first quarter ending on May 3. GameDaily reports the company also saw a 42% increase in sales to $1.8 billion, with new game sales giving a nice bump to the company, thanks to major releases during the period like GTA IV, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, RSV 2 and Army of Two.

GameStop's CEO R. Richard Fontaine maintains a "bullish" outlook for the rest of the year. He states the company's data shows that hardware sales grew incrementally higher in 2007 than in any other year and he expects a similar performance in 2008. Fontaine maintains GameStop is well on its way to opening about 600 stores in 2008, with half those located outside the US. The company also raised its guidance for the full fiscal year to show around 30% growth over the megatons of cash it made last year. Working conditions and customer service be damned, there be money in dem dar pawnshops for stockholders!

There are plenty of reasons to pre-order Fallout 3. Maybe there's a cute checkout boy/girl at your local game retailer that you'll take any opportunity to see or, maybe, it's because Fallout 3 is almost certainly going to be completely and utterly rad. Either way, those that lay a five-spot on the game at their local GameStop are going to be walking away with a five-song Fallout 3 soundtrack disc, according to Bethesda's official blog.

Preliminary numbers news now: gaming mega-retailer GameStop shared some Grand Theft Auto IV sales data with N'Gai over at Newsweek, who in turn breaks it down relative to the install base for each platform. Of course, these numbers only account for GameStop sales and, as Sony's Peter Dille points out, "GameStop probably does a little bit better with the early adopter crowd." That would be the same early adopter crowd who may know about GTA IV's 360-exclusive DLC.

Another limiting factor: these numbers don't account for console sales for the month of April, so any GTA-infused boost may skew the numbers further. But don't let those sobering facts stop you from enjoying our fancy chartification of GameStop's data. Note: Despite selling nearly twice as many copies, GTA IV performed better (at GameStop) on a per-console basis on the PS3 than it did on the Xbox 360.

We know that a vast majority of the gaming media consumers out there have a fairly negative outlook when it comes to pre-orders for popular titles (did anyone really have a hard time finding Halo 3 last September?), but that's not why we're writing about the recent pre-order listings on Amazon and Gamestop for the next (Barlog-less) installment in the well-received God of War franchise. What we find intriguing is the March 2 release date listed on both websites -- three quarters earlier than the last rumored launch window for the title. Given the nearly unquantifiable level of anticipation building up to the midnight unveiling of Rockstar's opus, it seemed prudent to roll up to the local Broken Arrow, OK Gamestop well in advance of the game's release. All of the preparation went for naught, however, as the store kept its doors open all night as enthusiasts congregated inside, joked in the secret language that only we nerds can appreciate, and not-so-quietly chatted about the game they would very soon be playing.

Even for Oklahoma, which isn't a video game mecca by any stretch of the imagination, the event showed the popularity of a game like Grand Theft Auto and its reach across all demographics. By 11:00 PM, the store had seen pre-purchases by an off-duty police officer, an elderly father purchasing the game for his underage son and equally youthful pal, and an older man obviously buying the game for a child waiting gingerly outside for the opportunity to run over prostitutes in glorious, high definition.



Things began to take a turn for the strange by 11:45 pm, when the loitering mass of thugs-to-be were ushered outside the store to form an "orderly line." By now the headcount was 80 strong and growing, with the majority having showed up tonight to purchase the game -- only a very small handful of those in attendance had pre-ordered the game beforehand, a reality that made the fact that they were asked to wait outside for the last 15 minutes in the wind and cold after hanging out in the store all the more surreal.



I like to think that the time passed for the employees inside even slower than it did for us in the night air as they found themselves without the conversation partners they had enjoyed for the last two or so hours.



As both the big hand and little hand on the clock nestled together on the 12, small groups of those in line were permitted entrance into the store, where two lines were quickly formed, pre-purchase receipts and photo IDs checked, and games handed over. As launch events go, it was certainly one of the most orderly and least abrasive that I've had the pleasure of being a part of -- a comical contrast to the game that inspired the gathering in the first place. As someone was overheard as a group of us filed out of the Gamestop, "Life, it was nice knowing you ... I'll see you again in a week."

The brave souls who soldiered through the vast queue at the Gamestop in downtown Huntington, W. Va. were put through a rigorous gauntlet of trials and tribulations before being rewarded with Rockstar's blockbuster shoot em' up -- including, but not limited to a freak, unseasonal cold front; a somewhat humorous (but unfortunately brief and unphotographed) drive-by water balloon strike; and alarming in-line discussions of bomb recipes and Sedan-mounted automatic weaponry.

However, the most disturbing sight seen at the launch is pictured above -- a tragic crime scene, just a few feet away from the store's registers. These two poor fellows were just mere moments from claiming their respective copies of the much anticipated title, leaving behind a puzzling forensic tableau. Hastily driving from the event with copies of Grand Theft Auto IV in hand, we were left with these pertinent questions:
  • What kind of altercation could have lead to this unfortunate double homicide?
  • What modifications were made to the pictured Nerf guns that imbued them with lethal force?
  • What sort of Crime Scene Investigation squad leaves behind the murder weapons in such a public place?
  • Most importantly, why did Gamestop remain open following this horrible act of violence?

Believe it or not, the police car in that photo actually belongs to an off-duty Anne Arundel County police officer looking to pick up a copy of the anticipated crime simulator for himself. But that doesn't mean there wasn't active law enforcement involved with the Grand Theft Auto 4 launch festivities at this Laurel, MD Gamestop. Keep reading for more pictures and a full account of the line-waiting experience as GTA4-eve finally bled into GTA4-day.


By 11:45, there were 50 people waiting in the 55 degree weather of the strip mall parking lot to get their copy of the game as soon as possible. By midnight, the crowd had swelled to about 70, and late stragglers brought the total pick up count closer to 100. Store management opened the doors at around 11:30 to start processing payments and get receipts cleared so the handouts would go smoothly at the stroke of midnight. Still, the line wasn't fully cleared until about 12:30.


Federal officer Kevin McMurtry was on hand to make sure the line behaved in an orderly fashion. Store management called him in at around 9 p.m., he said, to keep an eye on things and prevent confusion over the the two-line system the store had set up (one to get your receipt marked, one to wait to pick up the game). McMurtry said that the crowd was nothing compared to the Halo 3 launch, which reached around the block, and that everyone was on their best behavior. "Everybody knows if you make trouble, you're not getting the game," he said.


Ryan Wilhite, Charley Kingsley and Jon Gomez (right to left) were the first ones to line up for the game at 4 p.m. Monday. Gamestop recently released a mega-PDF of every store (in the States) opening at midnight for the Grand Theft Auto IV launch. We're pretty sure there's still plenty of time to get that pre-order in at Gamestop before April 29 occurs in your respective time zone.

As always, customers shouldn't plan on showing up at the launch without a pre-order and expect a copy to be waiting like at other retailers. It's surprising to still find customers at every major midnight launch disappointed when the Gamestop clerk tells the people without a pre-order to take a walk. When will people learn that Gamestop has rules?!
