Developer Palmer Luckey is now looking for funding via Kickstarter. "The reason we're using Kickstarter is so that we can get these dev kits into the hands of developers as fast as possible," Luckey says in the pitch video above. "That way they can try it for themselves and start integrating support into their games and engines."

The crowd-funding route has worked already, with the project securing more than double its $250,000 goal as of this writing. Limited prototype dev units - at $275 each - have all been claimed, leaving the $300 level as the cheapest route to get your hands on the hardware, which includes a copy of the upcoming, Rift-enabled revamp, Doom 3 BFG. In a related endorsement, id Software's John Carmack called the device "the best VR demo probably the world has ever seen."

That price is likely higher than what consumers will eventually pay for everything once the software is optimized and the design is finalized. The dev kits are set to be shipped out in December, so we could see a final product as soon as next year.

Oculus virtual reality headset looking for funding on Kickstarter originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 21:00:00 EST. The good folks over at XBLAFans have assembled a guide featuring everything you need to know about Trenched, Double Fine's excellent shooter/tower defense/World War I/mech mashup title on XBLA. From the Achievements to all of the various unlockable mech parts and soldier gear you can find in the game, this guide has you covered. They've even put some maps together on each of the game's levels, so you can figure out exactly where and when you want to put defenses down against each incoming wave.

In other words, if you've got questions about anything in the game, the answers are right there. Now, as for any possible DLC ... well, there is going to be DLC, right, Double Fine?
Trenched guide will help you dig in against the Monovision originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 01:00:00 EST. Although they sound like they came from the same mechanical naming bin, Cogs and Gear (two totally different games) have won the first annual Indie Game Challenge at the conclusion of DICE. Sponsored by the AIAS, GameStop and The Guildhall at SMU, the winners will receive $100,000 to build more games ... or to go on the most epic Blueberry Muffin Tops consumption bender in history.

Cogs, which won in the professional studio category, also took the $2,500 prizes for Achievement in Art Direction and Achievement in Gameplay. Designed by Lazy 8 Studios, the addictive (and challenging) puzzle game took the prize for its original PC incarnation, however there's a version of it available on iPhone and team lead Rob Jagnow tells us that an iPad and Mac port are planned. Jagnow also informed us he's "staying on the Cogs train for a while," but the studio's next project will be a "foray into social gaming, maybe a Facebook game."

Winning the non-professional category, Gear was designed by Digipen students Josh Maiche, Brian Lee, Andrew Hill, Ben Frazier and Mike Halbrook. Most of the members have several years of school still ahead of them. Asked if they'd drop out if they'd won, the team agreed they'll stay in school -- except for Halbrook, who recently graduated and is looking for a job.

The new version includes 2 new characters, A.B.A. and Holy Order Sol. Aksys claims that A.B.A. has "never been seen outside of Japan," a claim that is only true if nobody bought Guilty Gear Isuka.

In addition, Siliconera found a post on Aksys's official forums stating that they'll be fixing the bugs that were prevalent in the Japanese PS2 release. We consider "not being broken" a significant gameplay feature.

Finally, in a decisive victory for Internet linguists everywhere, the official press release advertises, in addition to Gamecube controller and Classic Controller play, "Waggle controls exclusive to the Wii!" While a certain contingent of our staff may doubt the fighting ability of the son of Big Boss, but we know the truth. Snake is hardcore. He may ask a lot of questions ("Metal Gear?" "A Hind-D?") and he may have a habit of hiding in boxes, but he definitely has the combat prowess required for Smash Bros., made evident by the fact that he smashed his own brother.

This post is a big "!" for Snake fans. We can hear your thoughts. We first spotted the demo, found out the November OPM will feature it and have reviewed even reviewed the demo, but now here's an Gaming Nexus interview with Mathijs de Jonge, the games lead designer and director.

In the interview, Mathijs explains how the game ties in with its predecessor, how many levels to expect, vehicle use and says the game is nothing like Metal Gear Solid. It's kind of funny because I even made mention of the two game's looking very similar in my review.

GamingNexus: Killzone: Liberation is quite a departure from the original Killzone on the PlayStation 2. Why did you decide to switch from a first-person shooter to an overhead shooter?

MdJ : We wanted to create a new experience within the Killzone Universe. Pulling out the camera to a third person perspective was the thing that we thought would change the experience most. So when we started working on this game this was the very first we tried. Then we decided to stick with it as it gave us a lot of inspiration for new mechanics and areas of focus such as improving the AI system.

(Via Gaming Nexus)

Gaming Nexus interviews Killzone director originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 16 Sep 2006 21:00:00 EST. While these accessories may match your Puma wardrobe, the luxury will come at a hefty price. Situated directly across the walkway of the Tecmo booth and next to Atlus' wonderful booth, the seat on the white bench called to me with the strength of a siren's song. I didn't think I would be able to hear anything from the unit, yet surprisingly there was little traffic there for the 5 minutes leading up to the Tecmo girls strutting out for their annual thing while I watched the digital comic unfold.

As for the artwork and voice work on the E3 build I was privileged enough to spend some time with, they were both very good. The panning was tastefully executed and Ocelot's dialogue, which took up most of what little time I had for the demo, was rich and powerful. Their pistol dual re-enacted from Metal Gear Solid was incredible. Overall the package seemed to be on par with, if not better than, The Silent Hill Experience UMD and has easily made my list of 'must buy' when it releases next month.
PSP impressions: Metal Gear Digital Graphic Novel originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 25 May 2006 15:00:00 EST. Sadly, time did not permit this and I was forced to leave the floor without getting my hands on it that Friday afternoon. Lacking the information I most desired (see: how the controls worked), Gamespot managed to swoop in to fill that void of information in my cranium and even went on to discuss the multiplayer modes that will be available in the final product during E3.
Metal Gear: Portable Ops info originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 24 May 2006 10:00:00 EST. As for Top Gun, well...is anyone excited for this game?
