Epic's Rod Fergusson says on Twitter that <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/gears-of-war-3"><em>Gears of War 3</em></a> is getting its Title Update 2 this evening at 2am PDT. Here's <a href="http://epicgames.com/community/category/gears-of-war/">the list of what's changing</a>; the biggest update is that the game is getting a spectator mode for gaming leagues to use which will turn the normally 5v5 matches into 4v4, with each team getting an optional spectator spot. Players grinding for rewards will appreciate the update as well, as the Leader and Vengeful medals are easier to earn, as are the Roadie Comet and Regen Enemies mutators.<br />
<br />
The update also tweaks some UI functionality, including adding an indicator during King of the Hill matches, and adding the option to remove the UI for machinima and video producers. And there are a few bugfixes as well -- host migration in Horde will now stick to the same wave as when it happened, and there are fixes for the lost progress and profile freezing issues that players have experienced.<br />
<br />
Fergusson says the update will bring down the game's dedicated servers temporarily, and players will need to restart their games to load it up. But follow those instructions, and you can be back to scratching all of the grubs you want.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/gears-of-war-3-getting-title-update-2-tonight-with-spectator-mod/">Gears of War 3 getting Title Update 2 tonight with spectator mode, easier medals and mutators</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 20:00:00 EST. The deluge of news from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Comic-Con">Comic-Con</a> continues to, uhm, <em>luge</em>, even as the convention's end draws closer and closer. <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/07/23/gears-of-war-3-gains-casual-mode-old-spice-dude.aspx">Game Informer</a> reports that Epic's forthcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/Gears-of-War-3"><em>Gears of War 3</em></a> will continue the series' tradition of offering an aim-assisted Casual Mode for players who aren't well versed in the delicate art of chainsaw sculpting.<br />
<br />
This time around, new players will also be able to sharpen their skills in their own dedicated multiplayer channels. According to <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2011/07/gears-of-war-3-gets-casual-multiplayer--new-cast-member-and-graffiti/1">USA Today</a>, players who have played <em>Gears</em> online previously, or participated in the Gears 3 beta will be unable to join Casual multi. That seems like overkill -- the honor system would be enough, in our opinions. After all, the Internet has a long and storied history of shepherding and tenderly caring for its newcomers.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/24/casual-mode-returns-in-gears-of-war-3-brings-casual-multiplayer/">Casual Mode returns in Gears of War 3, brings Casual Multiplayer along for the ride</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 12:30:00 EST. During the Gearsiverse panel at Comic-Con, Epic's Cliff Bleszinski and Ron Fergusson revealed that there will be <em>Gears of War</em>-themed armor of both the COG and Locust variety coming to XBL Avatars soon. One rule that Microsoft imposes on Avatar clothing and models is that they "can't look inhuman," according to Bleszinski. So they pieced together a workaround set of Locust armor that you can check out beyond the break.<br /><br />Look for these new Avatar upgrades to be available when the next Xbox Live dashboard update becomes available soon. Meanwhile, we're going to scurry out to our preview builds to see if they're already available. Be sure and peep the Locust image, just around the corner.<span style="font-style: italic;"></span><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/25/gears-of-war-cog-and-locust-armor-coming-to-xbox-live-avatars/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gears of War COG and Locust Armor coming to Xbox Live Avatars</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/25/gears-of-war-cog-and-locust-armor-coming-to-xbox-live-avatars/">Gears of War COG and Locust Armor coming to Xbox Live Avatars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 25 Jul 2009 21:10:00 EST. This is an extremely hard post to finish. Not because the Los Angeles <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><span style="font-style: italic;">Gears of War 2</span></a> launch party sucked (it didn't), not because we didn't get enough photos (took plenty), and not because we didn't get good interviews (<span style="text-decoration: line-through;">CliffyB</span> Cliff Bleszkinski and John DiMaggio, the voice of Marcus Fenix AND Bender, and others ... coming to you very soon). No, it's because we got the game, came home and slid it into the 360, and thought, "Hey, it'll be fun to try this Horde mode out!" Now it's 9:15 am, and it feels like one of those days where you wake up and realize you have a chemistry test in two hours that you didn't study for at all.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gears-of-war-2-launch-los-angeles/">Gears of War 2 Launch: Los Angeles</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gears-of-war-2-launch-los-angeles/#1145007"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gears2launch42_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gears-of-war-2-launch-los-angeles/#1145039"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gears2launch30_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gears-of-war-2-launch-los-angeles/#1145040"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gears2launch32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gears-of-war-2-launch-los-angeles/#1145008"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gears2launch43_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gears-of-war-2-launch-los-angeles/#1145041"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/gears2launch44_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/joystiq-at-the-gears-of-war-2-launchapalooza/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq at the Gears of War 2 launchapalooza</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/07/joystiq-at-the-gears-of-war-2-launchapalooza/">Joystiq at the Gears of War 2 launchapalooza</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 07 Nov 2008 17:15:00 EST. A brand <a href="http://videogames.yahoo.com/events/gears-of-war-2/gears-of-war-2-videos/1254704">new ad</a> for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War 2</em></a>, which hits shelves in two weeks, has just been released. Entitled "Last Day," it features Marcus Fenix and his fellow COG soldiers spending their last moments above ground before an underground assault on the Locust's home turf. The song featured in the trailer is "How It Ends" by DeVotchKa and tells viewers "You already know how this will end," as Dom and Marcus descend below the surface. Let there be no doubt, the commercial is definitely well produced.<br /><br />We can't help but be reminded of the famous (infamous?) <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccWrbGEFgI8">"Mad World" ad</a> that promoted the first <span style="font-style: italic;">Gears of War</span>, which makes sense considering it was created by the same team. Like the "Mad World" ad, "Last Day" is a radical departure from most action game advertising. Of course, that's precisely what makes it stand out. Find the ad after the break.<br /><br />Our only question now is how long it will take for enterprising filmmakers to start <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/27/gears-of-war-trailer-remixes/">remixing the ad with different music</a>, or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/06/halo-3-ad-its-a-mad-ring-world/">throwing the music onto other game commercials</a>. Get to it, internets!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/gears-2-last-day-trailer-the-new-mad-world/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gears 2 'Last Day' trailer, the new 'Mad World'?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/gears-2-last-day-trailer-the-new-mad-world/">Gears 2 'Last Day' trailer, the new 'Mad World'?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 14:30:00 EST. We're still getting our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/x3f-at-the-gears-of-war-2-reception/"><em>Gears of War 2</em> reception</a> at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-08">E3</a>. We've gotten a chance to play the game's multiplayer. So far, it's good stuff, and we imagine <em>Gears </em>fans will be pleased. We need to soak up a little bit more before we write up our impressions. In the meantime, check out a gallery of the event itself. Sorry, we're totally barred from capturing any shots of the screens, so you'll have to settle for pictures of the swanky club, Ciudad, where the event is being held in LA. Enjoy.<br /><br />We'll add more pictures to the gallery when we get a chance.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/the-gears-of-war-2-reception-in-pictures/">The Gears of War 2 reception in pictures</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 01:15:00 EST. You see that? You know what that is? That's a Dustin Burg experiencing pure <em>elation</em>. We're at Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears of War 2</em></a> reception. We are playing <em>Gears of War 2</em>. Specifically, we're checking out multiplayer, including the new survival co-op mode called <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/e308-gears-of-war-2-five-player-co-op-horde-mode/">Horde</a>. We'll have impressions up sometime tonight, along with a gallery of the proceedings. Alright kiddies time for some sleuthing courtesy of the <em>Gears of War</em> <a href="http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=616684">Official Forums</a>. The <em>Gears</em> site has <a href="http://gearsofwar.com/gearsofwarcom/index.html">a new splash page</a> up (above) and in Marcus' hand are some Dog (Cog?) Tags. Immediately upon discovery, there was the speculation that this meant death and loss would play some larger part in the game's story. But then someone decided to take a closer look at the number sequence visible on the tag: 033-116-117-126-071.<br /><br />Seemingly random right? Nope. Match those numbers with one of <a href="http://www.asciitable.com/">these ASCII tables</a>, and you'll get yourself the following letter string: "ESC N O V 9". We'd love to beleive that this was simply thrown in there to mess with the community, but it seems to be too much of a coincidence to be something wholly meaningless. Is this an early "word" on the release date? We sure hope so.<br /><br />Hit the break for a closer look at the tags.<br /><br />[Thanks Laron Alexander]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/rumor-gears-page-hints-gow2-release-as-nov-9/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Rumor: Gears page hints GOW2 release as Nov 9</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/08/rumor-gears-page-hints-gow2-release-as-nov-9/">Rumor: Gears page hints GOW2 release as Nov 9</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 Jul 2008 16:30:00 EST. Joystiq managed to grab a second of Cliff Bleszinski's time at Microsoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/spring-showcase-08">Spring Showcase</a> yesterday (seems like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/gow2-details-multiplayer-vehicles-carmines-back/">everyone</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/cliffy-gow2-has-best-cover-system-ever-trilogy-talk/">did</a>). Naturally, the discussion centered around Epic's bigger, badder, more badass sequel to <em>Gears of War</em>, which they have wisely dubbed <em>Gears of War 2</em>. Lots of things are discussed in the interview, ranging from merchandising to how <em>Gears of War</em> pacing will work with hundreds of enemies on screen. The biggest tidbit in the interview, however, centers around the game's online functionality. When asked whether or not <em>Gears of War 2</em> will feature a party system, Cliffy responded, "I think that if we were not to have a feature like that, it would probably be a pretty big fuckup."<br /><br />Yeah, that should be enough to pique your interest. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/joystiq-interview-cliffyb/">Head over to Joystiq</a> for the full interview.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/14/cliffyb-no-party-system-in-gow2-would-be-a-pretty-big-f-ckup/">CliffyB: No party system in GOW2 would be "a pretty big f*ckup"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 May 2008 13:30:00 EST. Epic fans hoping for a little pre-release Locust-slaying action will be disappointed to hear that <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/52306">no demo is planned for </a><em><a href="javascript:void(0);/*1208791008977*/">Gears of War 2</a>.</em> The first taste of the roadie-running action title will have to come when the full version is released sometime in November.<br /><br />According to associate producer Tanya Jessen, producing a demo takes valuable time out of a game's development cycle, and with a two-year turnaround for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gears-of-war-2"><em>Gears 2</em></a> a demo was simply not feasible. The first <em>Gears of War</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/04/dead-rising-demo-here-gears-demo-not-coming/">also lacked a demo version</a>, and with recent reports that demos <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/15/study-to-publishers-dont-release-demos-just-trailers/2">aren't as great as publishers think they are</a>, we have to trust that the folks at Epic know exactly what they're doing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/no-demo-planned-for-gears-of-war-2/">No demo planned for Gears of War 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Apr 2008 14:43:00 EST. After being "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/06/gears-of-war-sequel-already/">announced</a>" over a year ago, <em>Gears of War 2 </em><strike>is now</strike> was <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Gears-of-War-2/dp/B000ZK9QD2/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1197993134&amp;sr=8-1">available for pre-order from Amazon.com</a>. Millions of voracious gamers have reportedly flooded the site in the moments since the announcement, hopeful that their early action will guarantee them a copy of the highly anticipated game. The title is expected to be in incredibly short supply when it's released Nov. 15, 2008.<br /><br />OK, we'll come clean -- everything in the last paragraph is pretty much made up (except for the [brief] Amazon pre-order, oddly enough). While a <em>Gears </em>sequel seems like a no-brainer (and has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/27/gears-of-war-enhancements-planned-trilogy-unconfirmed/">hinted</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/21/microsoft-exec-touts-mr-fenix-as-hero-of-gears-of-war-trilogy/">at</a> a few times), the game hasn't been officially announced yet. And while Amazon <strike>lists</strike> did list Nov. 15, 2008 as the release date, you have just as good a chance at picking the right date by taking a dart to a calendar of Q4 2008. Whenever the release comes, though, we're relatively confident that hundreds of copies will be available at your local Best Buy, making pre-ordering 11 months in advance kind of pointless. Then again, posting "FIRST!" in comments threads is pretty pointless too, and people still do that, so go nuts!<br /><br />[Original headline: "Pre-order Gears of War 2 ridiculously early"]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/18/pre-order-gears-of-war-2-ridiculously-early/">Amazon ceases taking Gears of War 2 pre-orders [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 13:15:00 EST. In an <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/22016.html">interview</a> with Game Head's Geoff Keighley, Mark Rein talked up <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em> and <em>Gears of War</em> and accidentally let the <a href="http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/07/16/gearsofwar/index.php">news</a> slip that both games were headed to the Mac platform. Rein confirmed <em>Gears</em>' Mac-bound status when answering Keighley stating that "<em>yes, Gears is going to come to the Mac and so is UT</em>". The news was not followed by a release date or how far in development the Mac versions are.<br /><br />Anyone willing to bet that <em>Gears</em> Mac will have even more content than <em>Gears</em> PC all of which won't be available to 360 owners? When questioned about whether or not the new campaign missions or multiplayer maps announced for the PC version would be headed to the Xbox 360, Rein said it was "<em>unlikely [that] we will bring that content to 360</em>". Cliffy B further emphasized their doubt by stating that "<em>if we didn't have any sort of exclusive on the PC, why would people buy the PC version?</em>". The Epic crew explained that bringing the PC content over to the 360 would be an extremely time consuming task and that they're currently focused on other projects like <em>Unreal Tournament 3</em>.<br /><br />Being the <em>Gears</em> fan that I am it's hard to hear that new, exciting multiplayer AND campaign content will be available, but not for 360 owners. And no, there's no way I'm personally buying a beefy computer to run <em>Gears of War</em> PC just to experience the new content. No matter how you slice the news it sucks for 360 owners and <em>Gears</em> enthusiasts ... it's simple as that. Now, I'm going to go cry myself to sleep.<br /><br />[Thanks, Jason S]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/new-gow-pc-content-not-coming-to-the-360/">New GoW PC content not coming to the 360</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Jul 2007 12:30:00 EST. The official <a href="http://music.ign.com/articles/801/801637p1.html"><em>Gears of War</em> Soundtrack</a> was announced yesterday and will hit major retailers and be available online July 31st. The CD will feature 28 musical tracks that will chronologically take listeners through <em>Gears'</em> campaign and feature the Northwest Symphonia orchestra. Think of the soundtrack as a musical version of the whole "destroyed beauty" motif. Complete list of all 28 tracks are viewable after the break including our favorites "I Will Kryll You" and "Running With Boomers".<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/gears-of-war-soundtrack-drops-july-31st/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gears of War soundtrack drops July 31st</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/06/gears-of-war-soundtrack-drops-july-31st/">Gears of War soundtrack drops July 31st</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 11:45:00 EST. Not only did we have some great entries, but we also received entries that weren't really entries. Looking in our inbox we received emails from out of the country (this is a US only contest), entries that didn't include any attached artwork, and entries that were out of the country AND didn't include artwork. Those emails made us laugh and exercise our "delete email" finger. But, in the end, we came away satisfied with the creations our fellow fanboys submitted. So, we bet you are wondering which three entries were chosen to win a copy of <a href="http://www.ballisticpublishing.com/books/dartiste/character_modeling_2/">Ballistic Publishing's <em>d'artiste: Character Modeling 2</em></a>, what the Locust creations look like, and if Epic Games will be using the winning designs in the <em>Gears of War</em> sequel. Well, the answers to all those questions and more are posted after the break. Click along and come join our Locust art gallery fun.<br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/fanswag-gears-of-war-modeling-book-winners/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Fanswag: Gears of War Modeling Book Winners</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/fanswag-gears-of-war-modeling-book-winners/">Fanswag: Gears of War Modeling Book Winners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Jul 2007 15:00:00 EST. "<em>We are not announcing a sequel to Gears of War at E3 this year</em>" Rein responded and reinforced their commitment to<em> Gears of War'</em>s DLC by stating that "<em>we're still working on the first one</em>". <br /><br />As fans of the <em>Gears</em> franchise we're more than fine with no new news at E3. Microsoft's E3 spiel will more than likely be about <em>Halo 3</em> and other third party titles, so <em>Gears</em> news really isn't necessary. So Epic, you just take your time and put together one of the most rockin' <em>Gears of War 2</em> announcement trailers ever and take comfort in knowing that you have the support of at least one blogger around these parts.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/19/gears-of-war-2-not-happening-at-e3/">Gears of War 2? The eight new <em>Gears</em> achievements are wrapped up in the newish content all achievable either by playing the Annex gametype or by playing in the new Hidden Fronts maps (which cost 800 Microsoft points, but will be free in September). Our favorites? Based strictly on their names we love the <em>300</em> reference in "THIS! IS! ANNEX!", the nubness of "Nub Pwn3r", and "All That Juice" ... because it made us chuckle. But we're sure we'll achieve "You Down With E.P.I.C?" first, because it looks to be the easiest. Complete description of all eight new achievements is viewable after the break. Annex ... here we come.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/new-gears-of-war-achievements-rundown/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Gears of War achievements rundown</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/14/new-gears-of-war-achievements-rundown/">New Gears of War achievements rundown</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 14 Jun 2007 12:00:00 EST. Major Nelson gives word that <a href="http://xbox360fanboy.com/tag/gearsofwar"><em>Gears of War</em></a>'s upcoming title update will be <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/06/13/new-gears-of-war-multiplayer-achievements-and-title-update.aspx">available</a> at 2:00 AM <strike>GMT</strike> PDT, June 14th. <strike>Technically, that's still today in North American timezones</strike>. Either way, the update will have 8 new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/next-gears-update-will-bring-more-achievements/">Achievements</a> with a combined worth of 250 Gamerscore, relating to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/hidden-fronts-map-pack-now-available/">Hidden Fronts</a> map pack and the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/04/annex-official-word-king-of-the-hill-ish/">Annex</a> gametype. It also will refine the Roadie Run (again), and fix some exploits in the multiplayer. If you're dropped <em>Gears</em> for some other titles, will this draw you back in?<br /></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/13/gow-update-and-achievements-tomorrow/">GoW Update &amp; Achievements tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 09:30:00 EST. What better way to utilize this dead space than to read books <em>about</em> video games? If <em>Gears of War</em> is your thing, you're in luck, because It looks like a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GearsofWar/">Gears of War</a></em> book is in the works. We've found it listed at <a href="http://www.booksamillion.com/ncom/books?pid=0345499433&amp;ad=FGLBKS">several</a> <a href="http://www.bookstrip.com/book_detail.php?isbn=0345499433&amp;source=fr">retailers</a>, including <a href="http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?dest=9999999997&amp;product_id=5668112&amp;sourceid=0100000030660805302498">Wal-Mart</a>. Assuming the listing is correct, the book is being written by game history guru, <a href="http://www.sadsamspalace.com/">Steven Kent</a>, most famous to gamers for his book, <a href="http://www.sadsamspalace.com/VideoGames/Ultimate%20History.html"><em>The Ultimate History of Video Games</em></a>. Clocking in at 352 pages, the book is slated for an August release from <a href="http://www.randomhouse.com/delrey/">Del Ray</a>. We're assuming the title, <em>Gears of War 1</em>, is only a placeholder (it had better be).<br /><br />What say you fanboys, are you in for some light summer reading? You know, explosions, eviscerations, that kind of thing.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=165082">CVG</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/01/gears-of-war-book-sighted-online/">Gears of War book sighted online</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jun 2007 10:30:00 EST. Not only are they tweaking the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/15/epic-talks-post-update-roadie-run/">roadie run</a> as promised, but they are adding some glorious NEW achievements to both the Annex gametype and the Hidden Fronts DLC, taking advantage of the new Gamerscore <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/02/new-gamerscore-policy-just-makes-sense/">policy</a>. Rein also goes on to say that the update will take care of random exploits and general housekeeping, but that they do not have a firm release date for the update yet.<br /><br />Brand new <em>Gears</em> achievements simply rocks! It's something that I have been vocal about and to my surprise is going to happen. Now, for those of us who've earned the Seriously achievement, we can milk <em>Gears</em> for even more Gamerscore points. Dreamy isn't it? It's almost as if the <em>Gears of War</em> angels (Epic Games) have flown down from the heavens and blessed us once again.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.gamingtalkhq.com/gamingtalkhq-home/new-details-on-gears-of-war-update-new-achievements.html">GamingTalkHQ</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/next-gears-update-will-bring-more-achievements/">Next Gears update will bring more achievements</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 May 2007 13:15:00 EST. For the rest of MLG's 2007 season, <em>Gears</em> 4v4 tournaments will be held at every event with the total prize payouts reaching $140,000 and the finals awarding $25,000 to the team who topples the competition. Well, we fully understand your dilemma and thought we'd help out our fellow fanboys. Not only did we plop down the cash to buy the map pack, but we thought we'd pull back the secret curtain. Yup, we recorded a quick and dirty video of each map and showcased their uniqueness to give you a taste of what Hidden Fronts has to offer. And, as an added bonus, the video features informative (and somewhat creative) commentary by yours truly. But before you start mocking our lovely video you must know this is our first foray into such a project. Energy drinks were consumed, there was a bunch of swearing, recording, editing, recording, re-editing, and swearing ... but we survived. So, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7ATz6hn62M">give it a watch</a>, get a taste of the new <em>Gears</em> maps, and see if they are worth the 800 Microsoft points. And it's safe to say they were impressed. The guys played in Microsoft's test lab against a few mysterious game testers, getting a feel for the maps, and getting pwned in the process. A quick recap of their impressions are as follows; Garden features dense vegetation and green clouds of pesticide that'll kill you, but can be shut off via a control panel. Bullet Marsh is dark, very dark, and if the generator is turned off the map will get even darker and the Kryll will attack to kill. Process is chalk full of vertical elevation shifts, catwalks, and pipes ... a long distance killing machine's dream. Finally, Subway features multiple levels of fun, empty subway cars, beautiful rays of light, and dirty floors. Make the jump for TeamXbox's full impressions and be sure to check out <em>GoW</em>'s Hidden Fronts map pack, available tomorrow for 800 Microsoft points.<br /><br />[Thanks, MuJaHiDeEn 420]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/welcome-to-hidden-fronts-well-be-your-guide/">Welcome to Hidden Fronts, we'll be your guide</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 May 2007 12:00:00 EST. We have to say, they look mighty nice. Our favorites being that of Garden and Bullet Marsh, which both really take the "destroyed" beauty motif to the next level. Process looks nice, with the eery yellow glow of the Imulsion surrounding the battlefield, but Subway looks kind of run of the mill in the available shots. What do you think of the levels? The rest of the map shots are available after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/hidden-fronts-screenshots-hit-the-tubes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>"Hidden Fronts" screenshots hit the tubes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/01/hidden-fronts-screenshots-hit-the-tubes/">"Hidden Fronts" screenshots hit the tubes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 May 2007 14:30:00 EST. The website, known for posting legit movie scripts prior to their release, summarized the leaked <em>GoW</em> movie script in full detail. And it's weird that since the movie's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/20/gears-of-war-movie-rights-purchased/">announcement</a> all we've wanted is more information, any information on the movie. But now that the first twenty two pages have been leaked and are ready to read, we just cannot look at it. Call us wusses, call us babies, but we don't want to spoil the enjoyment we'll feel when we see <em>Gears</em> on the big screen and watching the story unfold for the first time. We'll probably try to get some final matches of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shadowrun">Shadowrun</a></em> in before the beta ends Monday night, rock out to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitarheroii">Guitar Hero II</a>,</em> or go back to old favorites like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Oblivion">Oblivion</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Gearsofwar">Gears of War</a></em>. On the site, you'll be able to partake in various <em>Gears</em> tournaments from 1v1 to 4v4 and be able to manage your team through the super sleek (yet simple) interface. Right now there are a couple hundred players signed up, so the competition should be pretty good. But there aren't any prizes for the tourneys just yet, so it's all about the bragging rights and the community fun. Competition and a legion of <em>Gears</em> players await you at <em>Gears of War</em> Tournaments ... go ahead and give it a whirl.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/gow-tournaments-you-say-sign-us-up/">GoW tournaments you say? But before you make your way to download the videos you should know they'll cost you money. Yes, Brady Games is happy to help you find those COG tags, but is charging 100 Microsoft points per <em>GoW</em> act. Running that through our fanboy calculator, that works out to be exactly 500 Microsoft points ($6.25 US) for five videos.<br /><br />True, it can be frustrating trying to find the last few tags, but please be strong and do not resort to purchasing these videos. There are plenty of free resources on the internet if you are having trouble locating those darn COG tags. Heck, all the COG tag location information you'll ever need is located <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/26/trouble-finding-those-cogs-we-can-help/">here</a>. So, go <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/26/trouble-finding-those-cogs-we-can-help/">here</a>, don't buy <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/04/25/bradygames-gears-of-war-cog-tag-locations-strategy-videos-5.aspx">this</a>, and earn <a href="http://www.xbox360achievements.org/achievements.php?gameID=144">these</a>. How you ask? With a whole bunch of button mashing that's how. Actually, the HUD removal video, button sequence and directions are posted over on crpgchamp's <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KjLQyZpqOE">YouTube page</a> under the details section. So now you have the entire screen as your recording real estate, HUD removal just rocks! The only limitation to the whole process is that you'll have to be on Xbox Live (because you can't be host) and you have to be attached to a wall for the full HUD removal effect. Watch the video, take it in, then make the jump to get learned.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/25/remove-that-icky-hud-in-gow/">Remove that icky HUD in GoW</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Apr 2007 15:00:00 EST. The <em>Gears</em> online tourney was supposed to start on April 9th, but due to leaderboard reset difficulties they had to push it back a few days. And since the competition is just getting started tomorrow, they are also extending the registration through May 12th with the tournament ending on May 13th. Grease your chainsaw and practice your <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/15/epic-talks-post-update-roadie-run/">roadie run</a>, because there are points to be earned and global leaderboards to conquer.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/19/gow-tourney-delayed-chainsawing-starts-tomorrow/">GoW tourney delayed, chainsawing starts tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Apr 2007 14:15:00 EST. Rod Fergusson, <em>Gears'</em> producer, hopped on <a href="http://gearsforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?p=24857635#post24857635">Epic's forums</a> to clear up the roadie run rumors and explain how the new system works. According to Fergusson, the new roadie running looks at player's intent and whichever way the movement thumbstick is pointed is where the game will look for cover. Now, when running around an object to the right, it <em>will</em> pull you into cover at the right. He says "<em>that they've tested this method extensively for weeks and really felt that it was a solid improvement</em>" and that they've "<em>received numerous emails and forum posts from people who really like the new system". </em>Right ... Anyway, Rod acknowledged that everyone doesn't like the current roadie run system (really?) and that they will be creating a new version that is based on both the old and new.<br /><br />But here's a thought. How about just not allow going into cover when roadie running? Then there will be no more unwanted sticking and to get into cover simply release the A button and tap A again ... genius! So, if you don't like the new roadie run system because you keep sticking to everything or even if you've fallen in love with it, change will be coming in the next update. Whenever that occurs ...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/15/epic-talks-post-update-roadie-run/">Epic talks post update roadie run</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 15 Apr 2007 14:15:00 EST. Yes, it's true friends, the latest auto update is far from perfect not fixing all our glitching woes and even making one annoyance worse.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/post-update-gears-problems-surface/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Post update Gears problems surface</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/post-update-gears-problems-surface/">Post update Gears problems surface</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 14:30:00 EST. But you should know that all the kills you get in Annex do not count towards <em>any</em> kill based achievements. According to <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/news/2007/0409-gowannex.htm">Xbox.com's</a> press release it states that "<em>the introduction of infinite respawns means that kills in Annex don't count towards any of the kill-based achievements</em>", which means no Seriously achievement for you! Though, the points and kills you earn in ranked Annex do count towards your overall rank score, so it isn't a total loss. Does it still suck? Of course, but we understand the reasoning behind their choice. Now get back to work, erm ... playing <em>Gears of War</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/10/annex-doesnt-help-with-achievements/">Annex doesn't help with achievements</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 10 Apr 2007 13:30:00 EST. True, the auto update was initially slated to be released <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/04/annex-official-word-king-of-the-hill-ish/">today</a> and then was later <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/05/oops-gears-of-war-update-isnt-coming-april-9th/">denied</a>, but we just got word that it is now back on for a release later tonight! Major isn't certain of the exact time that the update will be pushed through, but he did post a list of all the new enhancements and features that will be included;
<ul>
    <li>New Annex gametype. </li>
    <li>Better VGA cable support. </li>
    <li>Assassination gametype leader no longer unlocks weapons, but has to be executed to die. </li>
    <li>Boomshot's splash damage increased. </li>
    <li>Hammer of Dawn will be more forgiving with moving targets. </li>
    <li>Road Run has been tweaked to lesson accidental wall sticking. </li>
    <li>Kill message ticker will be available when down and while spectating. </li>
    <li>Fixed numerous multiplayer exploits (praise the lord!). </li>
</ul>
So, we'll be playing the new Annex gametype sometime later this evening and benefit from the other tweaks. We're just hoping that all the glitches and exploits have been fixed and that Annex turns out to be a blast. Anyone up for some <em>Gears of War</em> action later tonight?<br /><br /><font color="#ff0000">Update 1:</font> <a href="http://gamerscoreblog.com/team/archive/2007/04/09/543836.aspx">Gamerscore Blog</a> is reporting that the update will release at 4:00PM pacific. But <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2007/04/09/gears-of-war-auto-update.aspx">Major Nelson</a> is reminding everyone that this is a rolling update, which means it could take a few hours for everyone to get it after they make it available. So, be patient.<br /><br /><font color="#ff0000">Update 2:</font> Doh! Epic also released a few new <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gamerscore/sets/72157600059349133/">screenshots</a> featuring Annex. Silly us.<br /><br />[Thanks, zdgman]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/gears-of-war-update-and-annex-coming-tonight/">Gears of War update (and Annex) coming tonight! Even though we didn't get our <em>Gears of W</em>ar <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/05/oops-gears-of-war-update-isnt-coming-april-9th/">update today</a>, that doesn't mean we can't learn more about the upcoming Annex gametype. Embedded above is a video preview of what Annex will look like, play like, and what HUD changes will be made. From what we gather the HUD information on the top left seems pretty easy to understand and the hill locations are very obvious (colored rings floating above the ground are eye catching). It looks fast, furious and deadly ... we just want to play it already! After watching the video what do you think? Will Annex be a welcome change to the <em>Gears</em> gameplay or will you be sticking to your old favorite?<br /><br />[Thanks, Machiavelli 420]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/a-look-at-gows-annex-a-video-preview/">A look at GoW's Annex, a video preview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 09 Apr 2007 13:00:00 EST.
