Remember Retro-Bit, the company behind the nifty handheld NES / SNES, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/15/engadget-goes-hands-on-with-the-retroduo-portable-nes-snes/">RetroDuo Portable</a>? Once again, the company is looking to make your outdated gaming habits a little more convenient, this time with a line of wireless controllers for vintage consoles.<br />
<br />
There are three controllers in the Hypermode series, one for the Nintendo 64, a hybrid controller the NES and SNES, and finally one for the Sega Genesis. Each uses a 2.4GHz receiver to connect to its respective console, and all three have turbo functionality. The N64 controller also features a slot for a Rumble Pak. Furthermore, the NES / SNES and Genesis controllers can also be used on PC or Mac.<br />
<br />
The N64 controller is slated to launch this summer, while the other two are planned for this fall. Each will cost $30. Distributor <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/innex">Innex</a> will be showing the controllers at its booth during E3. We'll do our best to swing by and check them out.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, we pose a simple question: Where's our wireless Saturn controller?<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/retro-bit-hypermode-controllers/">Retro-bit Hypermode Controllers</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/retro-bit-hypermode-controllers/#5881844"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/genhypermode-wireless-controllersretro-bit_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/retro-bit-hypermode-controllers/#5881845"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/n64hypermode-wireless-controllersretro-bit_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/retro-bit-hypermode-controllers/#5881846"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/05/neshypermode-wireless-controllersretro-bit_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/retro-bit-bringing-wireless-controllers-to-retro-conoles/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Retro-bit bringing wireless controllers to retro consoles</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/15/retro-bit-bringing-wireless-controllers-to-retro-conoles/">Retro-bit bringing wireless controllers to retro consoles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 May 2013 22:15:00 EST. It also manages to use a single power supply, video output and custom-built controller, regardless of the system selected.<br /><br />Jump to 09:30 in the video above for a demonstration of this behemoth in action, including the repurposed NES cartridges that contain different circuit boards for each controller type, or start from the beginning for some deliciously chaotic wiring shots.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/13/project-unity-is-15-fully-functional-consoles-in-one-giant-box/">'Project Unity' is 15 fully-functional consoles in one giant box</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 13 Apr 2013 18:00:00 EST. Let's call it two for the sake of argument. On one side, there are people who want all the modern conveniences, both in-game and out: save states, fast-forward and rewind in the games, and wireless controllers, high definition output, and non-finicky hardware to play them with. These are the people who like emulation the most, either through downloading ROMs or official downloadable re-releases of games.<br /><br />On the other side, there are people who strive for absolute authenticity: real cartridges on real consoles, played on CRT televisions with real controllers. These are the people who, <em>hypothetically speaking</em>, stuff a Twin Famicom in their suitcase while on a business trip to Tokyo.<br /><br />Somewhere in the middle is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/24/retron-5-console-plays-nes-snes-genesis-gba-and-famicom-su/">this thing</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/retron-5-and-the-uncomfortable-tension-between-old-and-new/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RetroN 5 and the uncomfortable tension between old and new</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/04/retron-5-and-the-uncomfortable-tension-between-old-and-new/">RetroN 5 and the uncomfortable tension between old and new</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Apr 2013 18:00:00 EST. Your choice of style can be ordered in one of four hardware configurations, with ascending prices ranging from &yen;99,750 ($1075.47) to &yen;194,250 ($2094.35). The base model comes equipped with the 64-bit version of Windows 8, a 1920x1080 display, 4 gigs of RAM and a 500 gig HD, all powered by a Pentium 2020M processor, according to our friends at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/02/15/sega-themed-netbooks-beckon-japanese-mega-drive-and-dreamcast/">Engadget</a>.<br /><br />It's kind of a lot of money for not a lot of computer, but each laptop is packed with Sega-branded Windows 8 themes, replete with custom system sounds. Shipment is expected to begin in June for those who either live in Japan or are brave enough to import.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/">Sega Note PC</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644498"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22148500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644499"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22149500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644500"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22150500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644501"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/main22166500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-note-pc/#5644503"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/02/122166500x500_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/15/sega-introduces-line-of-console-themed-laptops/">Sega introduces line of console-themed laptops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Feb 2013 15:30:00 EST. With the benefit of fifteen years or so of technological advancements, developer WaterMelon Co. was able to put it on a 64MB cart, making it the biggest Genesis RPG ever. It's a traditional role-playing game about a botanist named Hoston on a quest to find a rare herb and cure his sick father. Now, the developer wants to update its turn-based throwback RPG for platforms people still use ... and Dreamcast too.<br /><br /><em>Pier Solar HD</em> is planned for Xbox 360, PC, Mac, Linux, and Dreamcast - that last one won't actually be in HD. The style is reminiscent of the original, but places more detailed 16-bit style sprites on hand-drawn HD backgrounds. To fund the redrawing of assets and licensing for new platforms, WaterMelon is seeking $139,000 on <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/573261866/pier-solar-hd-an-rpg-for-xbox360-pc-mac-linux-and">Kickstarter</a>.<br /><br />Backers get a copy of the game for PC, Mac, Linux, or Xbox 360 by pledging at least $15; $49 is required for the Dreamcast CD or a physical copy on the other platforms. Naturally, there are more expensive collector's editions, as well as luxury items like a <em>Pier Solar</em> branded Dreamcast or arcade stick.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/05/genesis-rpg-pier-solar-goes-hd-via-kickstarter/">Genesis RPG 'Pier Solar' goes HD via Kickstarter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 05 Nov 2012 13:00:00 EST. Combining game consoles and emulators, the Retrode 2 is a device that lets you play SNES and Genesis games on your computer. It's a USB device that accepts SNES and Genesis cartridges and controllers, and uses them with any emulator program. When not in use, it folds up into a little clamshell box. It's kind of <em>magical</em>, as far as we can tell.<br />
<br />
It's hard to say <em>why</em> you would be playing on a computer, in an emulator, when you have the cartridge and controller handy. Perhaps you want to be able to use save states or other emulator niceties. You might just want to take a bunch of screenshots. Whatever the reason, we like having the option! It'll be available January 23 for 65 euro or $85, depending on your region.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/retrode-2-usb-device-lets-you-play-real-snes-and-genesis-games-i/">Retrode 2 USB device lets you play real SNES and Genesis games in emulators</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Jan 2012 14:10:00 EST. Sega is releasing them all for free to PlayStation Plus members for a limited time, starting with the March 1 release of <em>Sonic the Hedgehog,</em> which is free to Plus members through April 5. <em>Sonic 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe 2, Comix Zone</em>, and <em>Altered Beast</em> will all follow on the day the previous game is removed.<br />
<br />
Those without Plus will have to wait for the opportunity to buy these Genesis games for $4.99 each: <em>Sonic</em> won't hit the normal PSN store until March 29, with the other games showing up around a month apart. You <em>could</em> wait for that, <em>or</em> you could get the <em>Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection</em> disc, which has all of these games and 42 more for ... <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Sonic-Ultimate-Genesis-Collection-Playstation-3/dp/B001G33V8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=videogames&amp;qid=1297874798&amp;sr=8-1">$16.79</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/16/playstation-plus-users-get-free-timed-exclusive-genesis-games-s/">PlayStation Plus users get free, timed-exclusive Genesis games starting in March</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Feb 2011 11:57:00 EST. The iPhone is a surprisingly capable gaming device, something that's been proven quite handily lately by titles like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/09/infinity-blade-review/">Infinity Blade</a></em>. Try to forget about that as you read the following news: Sega has released the Genesis version of <em>Virtua Fighter 2</em> for iPhone. That's right, the least impressive version of one of the most technically demanding fighting games is now available for <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/virtua-fighter-2/id413313931?mt=8">$2</a> on a device with no buttons. Thanks to the success of Sega's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/21/sega-genesis-classics-rising-from-their-graves-hitting-steam-an/">first wave of Genesis games on PC</a>, the company has announced that it's bringing more classics to digital distribution channels. Sold for $3 each, the new batch of games includes several favorites such as <em>Kid Chameleon</em>, <em>Sonic Spinball</em>, <em>Columns</em> and <em>Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine</em> (a re-skinned version of <em>Puyo Puyo</em>). All the titles are available now from <a href="http://www.sega.com/games/?searchPlatform=12&amp;searchGenre=&amp;searchGame=Enter+game+name...&amp;p_page=2">Sega.com</a>. <br />
<br />
The games are also set to hit Steam, GamersGate, GameStreamer and other sellers in time for the weekend. Find a full list of titles after the break.<br />

<small>POWER UP in our gallery</small></center><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/sega">Sega</a> is bringing a Virtual Console-like experience to PC digital distribution platforms.<em> Sega Genesis Classics</em> is a series of individual Genesis games available for download via Steam and additional, unspecified download services.<br />
<br />
On June 1, PC users will be able to download <em>Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin, Comix Zone, and Vectorman</em>, "from $2.99." We don't yet know how the prices will vary per game, but even if just one is that cheap, it's quite a savings over the $8 Virtual Console price. <br />
<br />
The screenshots sent out by Sega also include images of <em>Gain Ground, Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Crack Down, Sonic 3D Blast</em>, and <em>Shadow Dancer</em>, so we can expect to see those games from the distant past on PC in the near future.<br />
<br />
<b>Update:</b> Sega's <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/05/21/sega-genesis-classics-coming-to-pc/">blog post</a> about the collection clears up the launch lineup: all of these games will actually be available June 1. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-genesis-classics-pc/">Sega Genesis Classics (PC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-genesis-classics-pc/#3003928"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/20507altered-beast2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-genesis-classics-pc/#3003929"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/20508comix-zone4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-genesis-classics-pc/#3003931"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/20509crack-downscreen2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-genesis-classics-pc/#3003932"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/20510ecco-the-dolphin4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-genesis-classics-pc/#3003933"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/05/20511gain-ground2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/21/sega-genesis-classics-rising-from-their-graves-hitting-steam-an/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega Genesis Classics rising from their graves, hitting Steam and other PC platforms [update]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/21/sega-genesis-classics-rising-from-their-graves-hitting-steam-an/">Sega Genesis Classics rising from their graves, hitting Steam and other PC platforms [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 May 2010 14:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: right;"><small>[<a href="http://www.vgmuseum.com/">VGMuseum</a>]</small></div>
Those of you who bought <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/21/no-place-left-to-run-sonic-the-hedgehog-now-on-iphone/">Sonic the Hedgehog</a></em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/21/no-place-left-to-run-sonic-the-hedgehog-now-on-iphone/"> on iPhone</a> and liked it will be pleased to hear that, according to <a href="http://www.appolicious.com/articles/1683-sonic-2-iphone-app-proves-some-games-are-timeless">Appolicious</a>, Sega will release an iPhone port of <em>Sonic 2</em> next week. <br />
<br />
The site reports that the port of the sequel is at least marginally improved over the first iPhone <em>Sonic</em> in terms of control responsiveness, though it still relies on a virtual D-pad and button. Despite the multiplayer capability of <em>Sonic 2</em> on Genesis, however, this iPhone port is strictly a solo game. Tails follows behind Sonic as an AI-controlled character, but can't be operated by a second player.<br />
<br />
If <em>Sonic 2</em> does make it onto the App Store next week, it means enough of us bought the first game to make continued iPhone emulation worthwhile for Sega, which in turn means the porting is really cheap or the first one sold <em>really</em> well.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> Sega has confirmed the existence of the game, now slated for "late April."<br />

The increasingly popular game-trading service <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/goozex">Goozex</a> is <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/retro-game-trading-added-to-goozex-service-89540882.html">expanding its capabilities</a> to encompass the game platforms of yesteryear. New to the site is an option to trade NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Genesis, Sega CD, and Atari 2600 amongst the site's growing user base. Sadly, there's still no support for our precious Virtual Boy. Now we'll never be able to get our hands on that copy of <em>Teleroboxer</em> we've always dreamed of owning.<br />
<br />
There's already a ton of games from each platform <a href="http://www.goozex.com/trading/asp/homepage.asp">up for trading on Goozex</a> right now. Like, <em>good</em> games. Not the nine pathetic copies of <em>WCW Mayhem</em> which comprise your local used games store's N64 selection.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/31/goozex-now-accepts-snes-genesis-and-other-retro-game-trades/">Goozex now accepts SNES, Genesis and other retro game trades</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Mar 2010 19:40:00 EST. A journey into a wondrous console containing a bunch of old Genesis games and some generic motion-controlled games. That's the signpost up ahead. Your next stop: the Sega Zone.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/31177/new-sega-console-hitting-summer">Pocket Lint</a> has images of a new licensed Sega console called the Sega Zone (or the Zone Sega, according to the box), out in the UK this summer, that contains 20 Genesis classics and 30 new games, 16 of which can be played with the device's two wireless motion controllers.<br />
<br />
Essentially a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/04/hands-on-firecore-classic-console/">Firecore Classic Console</a> crossed with the "Zone 40," an existing knockoff Wii console, the Sega Zone also features a cartridge slot so you can play your copy of <em>McDonalds' Treasure Land Adventure</em>. It'll sell for <span class="blueLinks">&pound;39.95 (about $60) in the UK.<br />

Sort of.<br />
<br />
As the service will be at its February launch, the free<em> Ultimate Genesis </em>app just allows you to buy the existing Genesis games through a different interface, as well as new releases like <em>Shining Force </em>and <em>Ecco the Dolphin</em> for $3 each. It's essentially a united storefront for the kind of releases Sega is already doing (and has already done). <em>But</em> it'll also come with a free copy of <em>Space Harrier II</em>, which is as positive as any news regarding iPhone ports of console games can be.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/sega-releasing-iphone-storefront-for-genesis-games/">Sega releasing iPhone storefront for Genesis games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 18:00:00 EST. Entertainment has yet to release its PSP game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/q-entertainment-music-licensing-other-issues-keeping-portable-lumines/"><em>Lumines</em></a> for download <em>on the same system</em> because it has yet to acquire a license for digital release of its music.<br /> <br /> We don't know if this will be the Genesis version or the very different arcade game -- or even, we suppose, the Master System port of the Genesis game. We're contacting Sega for those and other details. We don't do usually cover plug-and-play consoles, but this one was too cool to pass up. While Innex and AtGames' Firecore Classic Console is pre-loaded with 30 Genesis games like <em>Sonic and Knuckles</em> and <em>Ecco the Dolphin</em>, it can also play <em>all</em> your old Genesis carts. We're not sure where all it's available, though you can find it <a href="http://www.buy.com/prod/sega-genesis-firecore-classic-game-console-20-games/q/loc/108/212208382.html">on Buy.com</a> right now for $50. The console also supports wireless Firecore gamepads, though you'll have to buy them separately, and newly developed "Truecolor" games.<br /> <br /> Innex is also releasing a very cool portable system with 20 Genesis games playable on a 2.4-inch LCD screen. You can get a look at it right after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/22/firecore-console-pre-loaded-with-genesis-games-plays-carts/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>FireCore console pre-loaded with Genesis games, plays carts</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/22/firecore-console-pre-loaded-with-genesis-games-plays-carts/">FireCore console pre-loaded with Genesis games, plays carts</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 16:29:00 EST. In celebration of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/joystiq-remembers-the-sega-genesis/">20th anniversary of the Genesis</a>, Sega is asking you, The Internet, to pick the next Genesis game to arrive on <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/tag/xbla">Xbox Live Arcade</a>. It doesn't look like an easy choice either, as the list of candidates has some of the console's best games. All told, you can cast your vote for:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Earthworm Jim</em></li>
    <li><em>Streets of Rage</em></li>
    <li><em>Golden Axe II</em></li>
    <li><em>Toejam &amp; Earl</em></li>
    <li><em>Shining Force<br /></em></li>
    <li><em>Revenge of Shinobi</em></li>
    <li><em>Wonderboy in Monster World</em></li>
</ul>
Sega is accepting votes until August 21, so head over to <a href="http://www.genesispoll.com/">genesispoll.com</a> and vote. We'd be remiss not to mention that all of these games are available on <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/tag/virtual-console">Virtual Console</a> already, but XBLA is guaranteed to add a few extra features, like game saving, Achievements and online multiplayer. Keep that in mind when casting your vote.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/14/sega-wants-your-vote-for-the-next-genesis-xbla-game/">Sega wants your vote for the next Genesis XBLA game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 18:00:00 EST. To welcome the Genesis to the next level ... of its life, several Joystiq writers have revisited the Enchanted Castles of our memories to share a favorite anecdote about the beloved console -- which altered our lives as drastically as it altered beasts.<br />
<br />
Truxt - on past the break for a blast (processing) to the past, and then let us know what set <em>your</em> 68000 heart on fire in the comments. And if you don't <em>have</em> any Genesis stories in your life, go make some! You'd be surprised at just how good the old <em>Sonic </em>games are. Like, so good they aren't terrible.<br />

A ninja hang-glides into some kind of futuristic Moscow, fighting guards, soldiers, and robots. Later he travels to Siberia and fights a giant robot gorilla. Of course, back in those days, not only did games not <em>have</em> to make sense, they usually didn't. I was so used to stuff like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/06/virtually-overlooked-kabuki-quantum-fighter/"><em>Kabuki Quantum Fighter</em></a> (about a kabuki actor who lives inside a computer and attacks with his hair) that <em>Strider</em> didn't even register with me as weird. But hey, it's pretty weird!<br /><br /><br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/virtually-overlooked-strider/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: Strider</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/11/virtually-overlooked-strider/">Virtually Overlooked: Strider</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 20:20:00 EST. <br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/esrb">ESRB</a> has rated a pair of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/koei">Koei</a> games that <em>aren't</em> <em>Dynasty Warriors</em> for release on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/virtual-console/">Virtual Console</a>. Both are historical strategic RPGs, though with very different settings. The first, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/nobunagas-ambition"><em>Nobunaga's Ambition</em></a> (top screens above), tasks players with conquering feudal Japan, while <em>Uncharted Waters: New Horizons</em> is based more on life at sea, and lets you indulge in sailing, trading, and even piracy.<br /><br />We <em>assume</em> these are the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/26/punish-your-wallet-with-this-nes-mod/">NES</a> versions, though could be wrong -- there were versions of each on the Genesis and SNES. Considering a boxed of copy of either goes for about $20 or $25 on eBay, we could be in for a bargain when these appear.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/koei-strategy-pair-rated-by-esrb/">Koei strategy pair rated by ESRB</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Nov 2008 18:00:00 EST. Don't let the name fool you, <em>Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection</em> is actually a <a href="http://www.sega.com/news/?n=2507">compilation disc</a> of 40 varied titles from the glory days of Sega. The $30 bundle for Xbox 360 and PS3 releases in "spring 2009" and outputs in 720p.<br /><br />As long as developer Backbone Entertainment keeps the quality high, this is looking like a must-have compilation for fans. Eric has made few appearances in <em>Castlevania</em>, especially compared to his <em>Judgment </em>cohorts Simon, Alucard, and, of course, Dracula. He appeared in <a href="http://castlevania.classicgaming.gamespy.com/Images/Scans/PoR/chr_6.gif"><em>Portrait of Ruin</em></a> as a gruff ghost who helped the vampire hunters by standing in one room and doling out quests.<br /><br />To <em>Judgment </em>players, he may just be some guy with a spear, but his history of being just some guy with a spear dates back to 1994, when he appeared as the spear guy in the Genesis exclusive <em>Castlevania: Bloodlines.</em><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/virtually-overlooked-castlevania-bloodlines-genesis/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Virtually Overlooked: Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/virtually-overlooked-castlevania-bloodlines-genesis/">Virtually Overlooked: Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Oct 2008 20:00:00 EST. What's better than playing golf with your favorite Nintendo characters in the comfort of your own imagination? Wielding a sword and playing a character named "Bowie," of course! <br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Mario Golf</em><span></span><em> </em>(Nintendo 64<span></span>, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Arguably the best in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Mario Golf </span>series and certainly one of the <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=26917">cheapest</a>. It just makes us wonder why Nintendo hasn't slapped together its cast of characters into a Wii golf game yet.<br /></li>
    <li><em>Shining Force</em><span></span><em> II </em>(Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): You've got a sword in a fantasy medieval setting that rewards you for swinging said blade at others. Also, did we mention your main character is named <span style="font-style: italic;">Bowie</span>?</li>
</ul>
To jog your memory, we've embedded videos of each title after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/06/mario-golf-shining-force-ii-swing-their-armaments-on-virtual-co/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mario Golf, Shining Force II swing their armaments on Virtual Console</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/06/mario-golf-shining-force-ii-swing-their-armaments-on-virtual-co/">Mario Golf, Shining Force II swing their armaments on Virtual Console</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 14:30:00 EST. Not long ago, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/29/stars-catalogue-music-download-service-finally-revealed/">news of Nintendo selling music</a> appeared in our RSS feed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/rumor-nintendo-selling-songs-in-exchange-for-stars/">weeks early</a>, only to lead to a dead link after it was hastily pulled by Nintendo. And now another slippage has occurred, with Nintendo accidentally revealing (what we suspect are the contents of) tomorrow's PAL Virtual Console update: <em>Earthworm Jim</em> and <em>Shining Force II</em>.<br /><br />Once again, the news appears in our RSS feed (as seen <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/media/2008/10/ewj_shiningforce_rss_reader.jpg">here</a>) while the story itself has been yanked from Ninty's site. All being well then, tomorrow's VC update for Europe and Australia <em>should</em> read something like this:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/21/earthworm-jim-other-interplay-games-coming-to-virtual-console/"><em>Earthworm Jim</em></a> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/vc-tuesday-srpg-tuesday/"><em>Shining Force II: The Ancient Seal</em></a> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points</li>
</ul>
These aren't set in stone yet, so we'll label this as a rumor, but it looks likely. A pseudo-classic Genesis sidescroller debuts on Virtual Console today, as well as an NES sports favorite ... but really, you're playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/22/wiiware-adds-mega-man-9-and-an-utter-mystery/"><em>Mega Man 9</em></a> right now. We know. You're not even reading this, are you?<em><br /></em>
<ul>
    <li><em>Super Dodge Ball</em> (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Without adding too much innuendo, the gameplay is pretty self-explanatory. You dodge balls.</li>
    <li><em>Vectorman</em><span></span><em> </em>(Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): While he never became as popular as <em>Mega Man</em>, this robot fought without a torso, and best of all, could shoot upwards.<br /></li>

According to the PEGI ratings board, we'll soon find out: the Genesis <em>Sonic 3</em> continuation has been rated for Virtual Console release. It showed up on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/11/sonic-and-knuckles-to-glide-to-virtual-console/">ESRB</a> months ago, but a new rating suggests forward motion, maybe.<br /><br />The cynical view of <em>someone who has seen a VC game before</em> dictates that the release will feature <em>only</em> the new levels available on the standalone cartridge, with no way to access the extra content made available by combining the <em>Sonic &amp; Knuckles</em> cartridge with <em>Sonics 2</em> and <em>3.</em> But maybe Sega will surprise us!<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129709&amp;page=500">NeoGAF</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/02/pegi-locks-on-to-sonic-and-knuckles/">PEGI locks on to Sonic &amp; Knuckles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 17:17:00 EST. In the beginning, Media Molecule made <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=LittleBigPlanet">LittleBigPlanet</a></em>. But the levels were barren and flat, and devoid of obstacles, so the player moved upon the face of the level creation system. And the player said, "Let there be swinging, spongy balls," and there were swinging, spongy balls. And the player saw the swinging, spongy balls, that they were good, and he divided the swinging, spongy balls <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/17/littlebigplanet-gameplay-details-showcased-in-sony-gamers-day-p/">from the electrified floor</a>.<br /><br />If you needed any more proof that <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>'s level creation system is going to be mind-blowingly robust, (though arguably less robust then <a href="http://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/Gen/Gen001.html">the level creation system discussed in Genesis</a>), we turn your attention to the video posted after the break -- <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/player/39080.html?r=1&amp;type=flv">a time-lapse sneak preview</a> of a player crafting his own level. It's a pretty clever design, and looks like a blast -- best of all, it only took about ten minutes. That kind of thing apparently <a href="http://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/Gen/Gen002.html#top">used to take seven days</a>. <br />Game sequels often suffer from a reputation of being weaker than their predecessors, but that hasn't stopped Nintendo whacking a whole pile of them on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/friday">PAL Virtual Console</a> this week. The M-rated <span style="font-style: italic;">Splatterhouse 2</span> leads the charge, bloodied lead pipe in hand, and is joined by <span style="font-style: italic;">Samurai Shodown II</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Pitstop II</span>, and <span style="font-style: italic;">Ecco Jr.</span> (okay, so that's not a sequel in the strictest sense of the term, but a spin-off for the kids). Here's what that little lot will cost you:<br />
<ul>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Ecco Jr.</span> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points<span style="font-style: italic;"></span></li>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Splatterhouse 2</span> -- Mega Drive -- 800 Wii Points<span style="font-style: italic;"></span></li>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Samurai Shodown II</span> -- Neo Geo -- 900 Wii Points<span style="font-style: italic;"></span></li>
    <li><span style="font-style: italic;">Pitstop II</span> -- Commodore 64 -- 500 Wii Points *<br /></li>
</ul>
* As usual, Australia misses out on the Commodore 64 game.<br /><br />Footage of all four is past the break -- try listening to six minutes of <span style="font-style: italic;">Pitstop II</span>'s engine effects without going insane.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/vc-friday-sequel-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>VC Friday: Sequel week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/08/vc-friday-sequel-week/">VC Friday: Sequel week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Aug 2008 12:50:00 EST. There's something about this week's update to the Wii's Virtual Console that just seems off. Maybe it's the odd partnering of a blue marsupial and a lumber-swinging madman, or perhaps it's the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/01/samurai-shodown-ii-slices-into-virtual-console-next-week/">noticeable absence of <em>Samurai Shodown II</em></a>, which SNK said last week would be among this morning's additions. While you work out some conspiracy theories, let's take a look at what new oldies <em>are </em>available.<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> (Sega Master System, 500 Wii Points): While Sega's 16-bit original has been available for download for a long while, <em>Sonic</em>'s 8-bit port changes things up with a handful of new stages, gameplay differences, and cruddier graphics.</li>
    <li><em>Splatterhouse 2 </em>(Sega Genesis, 800 Wii Points): There's many ways that we could spend our time waiting to slip on the Terror Mask and bash demons' brains out in Namco Bandai's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/splatterhouse/"><em>Splatterhouse</em> redux</a>, but really, what better way is there than to play through the arcade original's 16-bit sequel? The only right answer here is <em>none</em>.</li>

The other game is also for a Sega console: <em>Sonic the Hedgehog.</em><br /><br />Perhaps puzzled by how to identify the Master System version of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(video_game)#8-bit_version"><em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em></a> in their rating submission, since the two games are now both Wii games, Sega decided to put it right there in the title: <em>Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System.</em> It would be hilarious if this ended up being the final title for the game on the Virtual Console, but we doubt that will happen.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/sonic-the-hedgehog-on-the-master-system-on-the-wii/">Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System on the Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 13:15:00 EST. After all of the fun to be had at E3, it's time to get back to business as usual. Nintendo knows this, which is why the Virtual Console and WiiWare have both updated this week. So, let's get to the details already!<br /><br />This week's WiiWare release is:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/18/vc-friday-arrrrs-and-cars/"><em>Pirates: The Key of Dreams</em></a> (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)<br /></li>
</ul>
This week's Virtual Console releases are:<br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Super Fantasy Zone </em>(Sega Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points)</li>
    <li><em>Gley Lancer</em> (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 900 Wii Points)</li>
</ul>
And, before you ask, yes, those are the correct prices (both games are imports).<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/vc-monday-madness-super-fantasy-zone-gley-lancer-and-pirates/">VC Monday Madness: Super Fantasy Zone, Gley Lancer and Pirates</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Jul 2008 10:15:00 EST.
