Square Enix enlisted Keighley for a "Final Hours" Tomb Raider entry - which Keighley says he's "especially excited" about, due to it being "a tale about the act of reinvention, both of a studio and of a franchise." But Square also nabbed Levi for a video documentary supplement, which kicks off today, a full eight months before the game launches. Those are some long final hours, eh?

The completed entry will launch in March 2013 alongside the game, and will once again be available on iPad and PC. Kindle Fire owners can also snag it via Amazon. Check out the first Zachary Levi video entry above.
Continue reading The 'Final Hours' of Tomb Raider documented in March, first episode out now

The 'Final Hours' of Tomb Raider documented in March, first episode out now originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jul 2012 09:00:00 EST. Earlier today, when Geoff Keighley tweeted that his own app for the iPad (also now available on Steam), The Final Hours of Portal 2, had been updated with a new (and free) 2,500 word chapter, we rushed to our iPad to check it out. After wrestling over the company iPad for a while, we finally came to an agreement: Justin would read it aloud in his best southern accent. It was the only peaceful solution, you see.

While we can't relay the news with the dapper draw of a southern gentleman, we can confirm this new chapter focuses on Valve's attempt to make an easier-to-use level editor and an in-game level browser -- Valve even hopes to bring the latter to console versions of the game. The company is also looking at the possibility of adding GLaDOS to the editor. We can already imagine her berating us for how long it takes to rotate a ramp.

Those who previously purchased the app get free access to the new chapter. The app itself is currently available on iPad and Steam for $1.99.
Final Hours of Portal 2 app talks possible level editor features originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 19 Oct 2011 08:00:00 EST. Legendary game developer Hideo Kojima took the stage at the University of Southern California last night to talk about his life as a game developer, and give a few thoughts on the current state of gaming and game development. During an interview moderated by Geoff Keighley, the creator of Metal Gear Solid spoke honestly about his past as the son of two pharmaceutical executives, his current work/life balance, and what he thinks the future of gaming looks like.

Kojima told a few cute stories from his past -- he said that he started writing as a young man, and early on wrote a long story called "Survival Battle" that had everyone in its world fight at the age of 14, earning extra time in their lifespan for each victory. He said that in college, he was an economics major, and thus the "only oddball in my class that wanted to make movies or novels." His economics thesis even included a short story "to surprise my professor, and he was very surprised," said Kojima through a translator, "but it didn't help my grade much."

Kojima also talked about his gaming influences, starting with the original Famicom, and mentioned titles like Super Mario Brothers, Xevious, and the Japanese text adventure Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken as early influences on his work. "I felt great potential in the medium," Kojima said about discovering video games, adding that the interactivity was what really drew him in early on.
Continue reading Hideo Kojima talks life, influences at USC presentation

Hideo Kojima talks life, influences at USC presentation originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 06 Oct 2011 08:00:00 EST. When Nintendo showed off a reel of major third-party games currently in development for its newly announced console, the Wii U, the footage wasn't actually playing on Wii U hardware. Nintendo of America prez Reggie Fils-Aime casually admitted as much in a post-presser interview with GameTrailers, excusing it by saying, "We're talking a year away from when the system's gonna launch" -- a hard to argue point, considering developers probably need some time to, ya know, actually make games for it.

We're hoping to see some actual third-party game footage soon, but aren't exactly expecting it in the upcoming weeks. Nintendo's Wii U is expected to launch at some point in 2012, with Nikkei predicting the latter half of the year.
Wii U third-party sizzle reel composed of 360/PS3/PC footage originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 01:00:00 EST. You tried to make it last.

Like Teddy's plan to eat his lunch for a whole bus trip you parsed out the exact bites of Portal 2 you'd need to take to savor it for a full week. But here we are, just seven days and one overnight, 15-hour bender later and all you've got to show for it is a big belly fulla nothing.

If you've got an iPad, two bucks and the urge to make the hunger pangs go away, you might wanna pick up The Final Hours of Portal 2, Geoff Keighley's fascinating interactive feature story on the creation of Valve's latest. What kind of revelations can you expect? Well, how about the fact that Portal 2 might be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player component (what about poor Episode 3)? Or the details of Erik Wolpaw's sleep schedule?

Yeah, we thought that one would sell you. Oh, and good news for non-iPadders out there: Keighley says that at least the text of the app will come to other platforms soon.
Keighley's app showcases Portal 2 development originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 28 Apr 2011 04:00:00 EST. Cliff Bleszinski has curb-stomped the rumor of Kinect functionality appearing in Gears of War 3. Responding to a report by IGN that suggested motion-control features would emerge in a Gears of War game, the Epic Games developer said on his Twitter: "No Kinect in Gears of War 3."

The IGN piece did leave some wiggle room for itself, noting that it "cannot clarify whether or not this is an all-new Gears of War for Kinect or if it's an existing Gears of War game, retro-fitted for the camera controller." The reveal will apparently be made at the Spike TV Video Games Awards. Master of WORLD EXCLUSIVES, Geoff Keighley, has already started to hype the show's "world premiere announcements," teasing two earlier reveals set for Wednesday.

If Microsoft wants to combine Gears of War with some optional Kinect functionality, it seems like a perfectly reasonable way to get more core gamers interested in the peripheral, which is a little too family friendly with its catalog at the moment. However, if we don't get a Tickle-Me Dominic[TM] minigame, we'll consider any Kinect/Gears crossover a failure.
No Kinect in Gears of War 3, Bleszinski assures originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 09:08:00 EST. If you're looking for Call of Duty news that isn't related to the Infinity Ward fiasco, you're in luck. This week's GameTrailers TV will feature a brand new teaser trailer that promises to "put all the rumors to rest." We already know that the next iteration of Activision's FPS franchise will be developed by World at War's Treyarch, but this week's GTTV should finally confirm the long-rumored Vietnam setting.

GTTV will air on SpikeTV on Friday night at 12:40AM. (And don't worry, we'll post details immediately after they air.) Check out a promo after the break.
Continue reading Next Call of Duty to be announced on GameTrailers TV this week

Next Call of Duty to be announced on GameTrailers TV this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 28 Apr 2010 16:50:00 EST. We always assumed that Geoff Keighley's ability to secrete world exclusives only applied video games, but his power/curse seems to extend even to magazines about video games. Keighley says he got an early look at Game Informer's recently teased piece on Rockstar's L.A. Noire and let slip via his Twitter feed that the game is apparently slated to arrive in September.

According to legend, Keighley is often able to see pieces like this even before the electrical impulse makes its way from the "typing synapse" of the brain to the writer's fingers. That's our accurate, scientific way of saying we haven't seen the piece for ourselves yet, so we're going on Keighley's word at the moment. We know, we know, we dislike trusting a guy who misspells "Jeff" too.

Update: A representative from Game Informer confirmed to us that the L.A. Noire issue of the magazine does list a September 2010 release window for the game. And now, we play the waiting game.
Keighley: L.A. Here were are again, folks, for another edition of "Turn a Tweet Into a Full Post." This time we've got word from the always exciting Twitter feed of Geoff Keighley that this week's episode of GameTrailers TV will reveal the fourth game from Japanese developer Platinum Games. So far, after inking a publishing deal with Sega in 2008 for four games, all we've heard of the mysterious fourth title is that it will be headed up by Resident Evil designer Shinji Mikami.

Considering the somewhat confusing wording of Keighley's tweet, we asked the man himself to clarify what we're going to see on Thursday evening. "It's an exclusive reveal trailer for the game inside the show this week. The news breaks during GTTV on Thursday night. We're really excited to have the Japanese developers/publishers working with us on reveals like this." He also pointed out that this countdown on Platinum Games' Japanese website has been counting down towards Thursday's reveal -- aha! For all the steaming hot scoops, you'll have to peep the show when it airs this Thursday evening/Friday morning at 12:30AM ET.
Platinum Games' fourth game to be announced on this week's GTTV originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Jan 2010 16:45:00 EST. To clear up any misconceptions with "the kids on Twitter," Spike Video Game Awards host Geoff Keighley took to Major Nelson's podcast this weekend and explained that the Halo: Reach trailer on next week's show will be "actual gameplay." That's right, folks: none of that live-action or CG mumbo jumbo. "You'll get a first glimpse at the world of Reach," Keighley told the Major during this week's show. "I think it's going to be the biggest game next year by far."

When addressing the contents of the trailer -- something Keighley claimed to have not seen just yet -- he noted that he thinks people will be shocked by the direction than Bungie is taking, calling it a "huge leap forward." So, Mr. Keighley, it could be said that the studio is reaching new ground then?

We're not convinced that Spike TV had the most quality people handling their interviews on the red carpet of the Scream 2009 awards. As you can see in this video interview, the ham 'n' egger behind the camera actually asked Geoff Keighley how he gets so many exclusives when everybody knows Geoff Keighley secretes exclusives glandularly.

The interviewer does do one thing right though, getting Keighley to promise that he'll have even better exclusives than last year in the 2009 VGA ceremony. He's made similar promises in the past and delivered, most notably during last year's show in which God of War 3 debuted. We just can't imagine how much spicy food he'll have to eat to pull that off.

That's right ... Geoff Keighley is basically Turbo Teen.
Ever since Andrew Ryan decided to go out for that pack of smokes (our mom says he's coming back; just you wait!), there's been nobody to tend to the leaky pipes and roving packs of splicers in Rapture. Well, according to GameTrailers TV's Geoff Keighley, someone's finally decided to step in and assume the leadership role for BioShock 2, and we'll find out who on Thursday's episode.

In another tweet, Keighley promised plenty of "new single player info and footage" and even teased that the episode will also reveal new characters -- something we already knew was planned for the sequel. You can catch the special BioShock 2 episode this Thursday night, October 22 at 12:30 a.m. ET on Spike.

GTTV features BioShock 2 this week; reveals who's running Rapture originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Oct 2009 00:00:00 EST. Since he announced it in a 140 character-constrained tweet, and since he wants you to watch the show, there was little room for details beyond it being "original."

We're just going to guess that the new game is Lucidity, the rumored XBLA adventure game that has yet to be officially announced. Of course, a safer bet would be "another Star Wars game." We'll all find out Thursday night, we suppose.
Save for the one story mission we saw at E3 2009 and the character introduction trailer, Halo 3:ODST's single-player campaign hasn't seen heavy exposure from developer Bungie. That all changed last night, when GTTV got a hold of design director Paul Bertone, who revealed "Kizingo Boulevard," a tank-based level that follows an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper from "kind of in the middle of the story."

Later in the episode, Bungie's creative director, Joe Staten, teased a bit of info regarding next year's Halo: Reach, saying, "We're really excited about telling a story with more Spartans in it." Host Geoff Keighley pushes Staten on squad-based Halo rumors and receives an interesting answer: "Without any of the baggage of sort of squad-based combat, I think that would be a safe assumption." Maybe we'll finally find out what happened to Linda, Fred, and Kelly!

... we did not just write that.
How exclusive is this footage? So exclusive it's not even named yet! At least that's what Valve's Chet Faliszek told Geoff Keigley about Left 4 Dead 2's amusement park campaign on the most recent episode of GTTV. If you skip past the first half of the episode found after the break (which, inconveniently enough isn't available as a standalone video), you'll get a few minutes of new gameplay from the upcoming zombie-murdalizin' sequel.

As you might imagine, there are zombies. There are also amusement park rides. As if clowns weren't terrifying enough! Come on, Valve!
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter hates the PSP Go. Alright, alright, he doesn't quite hate it, but he does despise its price point. On a recent episode of Bonus Round, Pachter matter of factly states, "$249 is too much. Period." He goes on to say that while the handheld is priced to compete with Apple's $229 8GB iPod Touch, it doesn't deliver the iTunes App Store or downloadable music from iTunes (as conveniently, at least, as the iPod Touch).

Furthermore, he posits the $250 price of the PSP Go is vastly overinflated considering its contents, claiming it costs Sony less to build and ship the PSP Go than the PSP-3000 model, "The $169 PSP-3000 is a profitable device -- the disc assembly, for a UMD, costs more than 16 gigs of flash does. So this new device doesn't cost them as much as the PSP-3000 and they jack the price up $80?" When Keighley presses Pachter as to whether Sony is "ripping off" the consumer or not, he answers, "They're rippin' off the consumer ... they're making a lot more money on the PSP Go than the PSP-3000."

Gallery: PSP Go

Pachter says Sony is 'ripping off' consumers with PSP Go originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 09 Jun 2009 18:55:00 EST. It's become clear as of late that Duke Nukem Forever has become a topic that we can't ignore. Today is no exception, with 3D Realms releasing its first public statement since the dissolving of the game's development team and saying that it's "not closed and is not closing." Though the developer admits Take-Two "retains publishing rights to the game [DNF]," it's positing an ability to "sell the game directly to the public."

Furthermore, the company is charging Take-Two with bully tactics for the way it has treated 3D Realms over the past year or so of negotiation. 3DR says Take-Two tried to force a "fire sale" out of the situation and due to this, 3DR left the table as of May 4. As the release pointedly notes, this was only two days before the news broke of the original events, and a flood of screenshots and video of the game was loosed on the public. Seems like we've got more litigation on our hands! Yeehaw!
3D Realms still alive, claims Take-Two accusations 'without merit' originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 18 May 2009 18:40:00 EST. Yeah, another Tony Hawk game is being made. We're so glad he could get that off his chest. Fresh off the announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks at GDC 2009, Nintendo of America head honcho Reggie Fils-Aime had some interesting things to say about Nintendo's plans for this year's E3. "From Nintendo's perspective, we always go into E3 with a very high bar wanting to satisfy not only the core fans but also ourselves," he told GameTrailers TV, teasing the reveal of a release date for the upcoming Zelda. "We haven't announced a launch date -- maybe we'll do that at E3."

So, conclusive evidence of a brand new Kid Icarus game? Not quite. Though Keighley hammered "the Regginator" for details on what exactly Nintendo would be bringing to the "glamour and sizzle" fest of this year's E3, the exec kept mum, saying, "Everyone wants to know what we're going to announce at E3 and my answer is, come to E3 and you'll see." Guess we're waiting 'til June 2 like everyone else.

[Via Play.tm]
Reggie promises a better E3 from Nintendo this year ... again originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 10:44:00 EST. Geoff Keighley and co. got the scoop on the newest trailer and a ton of info for the upcoming Wolfenstein game from Raven Software on last night's GameTrailers TV. The game, unsurprisingly, seeks to bring back most of what we remember from the classic id Software title, from main character B.J. Blazkowicz to the gauntlet of Third Reich baddies taking aim at B.J. along the way. This may or may not be a good thing, considering when we last saw Wolfenstein at the NY Comic Con, we were less than impressed.

Additionally, the <strike>next-gen</strike> current-gen update to Wolfenstein brings with it some new weapons (a particle gun that vaporizes enemies, for instance) as well as a twist on the gameplay called "the veil," which the game's creative director, Eric Beissman, describes as, "An alternative reality that sits on top of where we live." From what we can glean from the gameplay in the video, this "veil" business seems to be Wolfenstein's version of bullet-time, as well as a means to employ various powers.

To find out everything Mr. Keighley discovered, peep the interview with Beissman after the break. Oh, and yeah, no mech Hitler! Seriously?!

Continue reading New Wolfenstein trailer and info exclusively from GameTrailers TV

New Wolfenstein trailer and info exclusively from GameTrailers TV originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 21 Mar 2009 14:30:00 EST. Geoff Keighley's coming to the PlayStation Network. His Spike TV show, GameTrailers TV, will be making regular appearances on the PSN Video Store. The show, which airs weekly, is similar to Qore, and provides viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the development of some popular games. We're assuming the show will cost the same it does on the Xbox Live Marketplace counterpart, so expect SD episodes to run $2 an episode, while HD episodes will cost $3. Confirmed: SD episodes cost $2 an episode.

The, uh, trailer for GameTrailers TV is after the break.
Continue reading GameTrailers TV coming to PlayStation Network

GameTrailers TV coming to PlayStation Network originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 10:15:00 EST. GK will continue with a full slate of activities, including producing the Video Game Awards and hosting "GameTrailers TV with Geoff Keighley," for which, considering the title, he seems to be the best candidate.
Dean Geoff Keighley continues tenure at Spike TV originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 23:00:00 EST. In the latest episode of GameTrailers TV, baby-faced Geoff Keighley got a chance to have a pow-wow with Gears of War 2's designer and poster boy, Cliff Bleszinski, who revealed some of the game's heretofore unannounced additions. Chief among said additions are a new multiplayer map titled "Day-One", which features a sizable emergence hole and its massive, treacherous occupant, and the inclusion of AI bots in the game's multiplayer modes, as featured in another of Epic's staple franchises, Unreal Tournament.

Other big reveals during the episode include the revivification of a map from the original Gears' "Hidden Fronts" DLC pack titled "Subway", the addition of player-controlled tanks, and a limited edition red, Gears of War 2-themed Xbox 360 to be released around the title's launch. With the veritable cornucopia of information already unleashed about Microsoft's holiday blockbuster, we're beginning to wonder if they've got any frags up their sleeves for next week's showcase.
Gears of War 2's 'Day-One' map, multiplayer bots revealed originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 12 Jul 2008 14:30:00 EST. We thought it was important to comb through Spike TV's E3 coverage plans, if only so we could plan our walking paths to put us in front of the cameras as much as humanly possible. But imagine our surprise when we actually found news hiding within our ticket to stardom. Check this listing:

"Geoff Keighley is on the E3 show floor to give Spike viewers the inside scoop on the sights and sounds of the show. Also, tune in for more world exclusive surprises including something special from id Software and Raven Software. -- Tuesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 16 (11:59 PM - Midnight, ET/PT)"

Something special from id and Raven, huh? Could it be the 2-and-1/2-years-in-development Wolfenstein follow up that's supposed to arrive this year? Yeah, we think that's a pretty safe bet. Following Fox News' horrifically ignorant segment on Mass Effect, publisher Electronic Arts showed it is not about to go quietly into the night. Kotaku obtained a letter sent by EA VP of Communications Jeff Brown to Live Desk with Martha MacCallum producer Teri VanHorn, asking her show to set the record straight on "serious errors" made by the program concerning the game.

Shown in excerpts of the letter, Brown cites specific lines from the segment (hint: something to do with "full digital nudity" and sex) and explains why they were wrong -- and if you've played through Mass Effect, you know full well how wrong they were. Cited, too, are comparisons to the more sexual content found in less-castigated primetime television such as Fox's own Family Guy and The OC.

Said Brown about the four people who concluded the show: "They have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales." Watch the video again and see for yourself.

The letter concludes, "This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect." Niceties aside, it's great to see EA stand up for the industry and flex its muscle. Gamers have shown much less restraint, bombing segment specialist Cooper Lawrence's book into low ratings oblivion on Amazon.

[Via GameDaily; thanks to everyone who sent this in!]
EA to Fox News: 'correct the record' on Mass Effect originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Jan 2008 11:50:00 EST. SeXbox? Really, Fox News? You can't even pretend that you didn't crib that title straight from last week's insane rant on Mass Effect, wherein one right-wing blogger claimed players could "hump in every form, format, multiple, gender-oriented possibility they can think of." But you didn't just crib the title, you covered the same topic in the very same game and even managed to recycle the same erroneous claims that the original creep had already recanted! And it only took you what ... two months after the game first landed in the impressionable hands of pre-pubescent boys everywhere? Bravo!

But oh, what's this? You invited the capable Geoff Keighley on the show to combat the embarrassingly uninformed opinions of one Ms. Cooper Lawrence (loving that book cover, Cooper), a "developmental psychologist" who literally laughs at the mere prospect of playing a video game before flapping her gums about it on national television. Sure, they don't give Geoff enough time to get as many punches in as we'd have liked to see, but that double dose of "that's completely incorrect" is sure to leave a mark in the morning.
Keighley takes on Fox News' seXbox seXposé originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Jan 2008 22:20:00 EST. Just when you were getting used to the awkward name, our good buddies at MTV Networks (hey Ed Lover!) have decided to close up Game Head HQ after 2-1/2 years and roll that show's talent into another video gaming super show: may we introduce GameTrailers TV, premiering next month on Spike TV.

So, Keighley stays on board, but now his powers are augmented by those of GameTrailers' Daniel Kayser and Amanda MacKay. After purchasing Game Trailers two years ago, MTV has been steadily integrating the property across their burgeoning video game empire. One need look no further than last night's airing of the Spike Video Game Awards, which was littered with video game trailer premieres (amongst other things carefully selected to trigger base responses in the 18-34 year old male demographic).

So, we'll still have the news and interviews from Game Head, but coupled with the features and trailers from GameTrailers. Apparently, like the VGAs, trailers will premiere on the show before popping up on GameTrailers.com along with the full episodes. Full episodes will later make their way to the Xbox Live Marketplace in glorious HD if you're into that sorta thing.
Game Head out, GameTrailers TV in originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 12:10:00 EST.
