Here come the official specs! According to Sony Ericsson, the Xperia Play (aka "PlayStation Phone") includes a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with an embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor to enable "smooth 60fps" mobile gaming. And if the specs are to be believed, the Play will be able to game for "up to 5 hours and 35 minutes" -- making it a better performer than some of Sony's other handheld devices.

The device will be available in black and white, and will come with a 5.1 megapixel camera. If you plan on downloading a lot of games, remember this: the device will have 400MB of on-board phone memory and a 8GB microSD memory card. Finally, Xperia Play will be one of the first devices to support Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, when it launches this Spring. For more specs, click past the break.
Continue reading Xperia Play battery life supports gaming for 5+ hours, and other specs

Xperia Play battery life supports gaming for 5+ hours, and other specs originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Feb 2011 14:07:00 EST. In the introductory video after the break, Google says that it "focused on optimizing performance and tools for game development."

Android NDK technical lead David Turner outlines improvements designed to smooth animation and increase responsiveness for input. In addition, Google now offers APIs for direct access to "input and sensor events," OpenGL ES, and more. The OS also supports gyroscope sensors for motion controls.

The gaming focus of Gingerbread seems to support the rumors of a Gingerbread-powered PlayStation Phone. Although Google doesn't really need motivation from Sony to up its gaming offerings -- it has its own operating system to distribute, and its own app store to populate.
Continue reading Android 2.3 features game development-centric upgrades

Android 2.3 features game development-centric upgrades originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 12:00:00 EST. With it being Christmas next week, some look to making gingerbread houses as part of the fun of the holiday. For us, we usually just relish the time we get off to actually play games, but to each their own. Enter this NES made from gingerbread you see above. We especially like the licorice used as the cord, which just so happens to spell out Nintendo.

Personally, if we were going to make anything out of gingerbread, we'd probably also go with a NES. Or maybe a life-sized Boba Fett. You know, something tasteful.

[Via Geekologie]
8-bit for the holidays: Gingerbread Entertainment System originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Dec 2008 19:04:00 EST. A new Polish outfit -- so new in fact that it doesn't seem to even have a website yet -- has announced development of a new first/third person shooter for the Xbox 360 and PC called The Protector, which promises the unorthodox mix of terrorism and Aztec lore. Developed by upstart Gingerbread Studios, the game's playable characters similarly break from convention, lacing players up in the boots of former lovers Jennifer Guile and Jonathan Kane, a US archaeologist and British mercenary.

Even so, their relationship won't just be used to thicken the sexual tension ala Melrose Place. Instead, the devs note that each will work to keep an ancient Aztec weapon out of the hands of terrorists using different skills, with archaeologist Guile sneaking around stealthily while Kane sprays bad guys with bullets in "searing, tactical shooting." The game, which has not yet been given a release date, won't just have the pair going up against terrorists, but also "mythical Aztec creatures" as well, giving us all the reason we need to keep an eye on The Protector in the months to come.

[Via Big Download]
