Attention <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/jailbreak">"jailbroken"</a> iPhone owners: <a href="http://toucharcade.com/2008/05/27/temper4iphone-a-turbografx-16-emulator-for-iphone/">Touch Arcade</a> reports that it's now perfectly okay to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bonk"><em>Bonk</em></a> your wunderphone without having to worry about its purty glass screen cracking. Emulator author <a href="http://www.zodttd.com/">ZodTTD</a> (shall we kneel before him?) has ported the nifty <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TurboGrafx-16">TurboGrafx-16</a> emu, <a href="http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/Temper">Temper</a>, to iPhone as - wait for it - <a href="http://www.zodttd.com/forums/showthread.php?s=ac11bfc6519ab8b728118f2021c17ebb&amp;t=1831">temper4iphone</a>.<br /><br />Temper was originally developed for the South Korean <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gp2x">GamePark 2X</a> handheld and ran ROM- and CD-Based titles designed for NEC's 16-bit system, which was a smash in Japan (as the PC-Engine) but enjoyed modest success in the West under its <em>Turbo</em>-fied moniker. As you can see from the embedded video, the emu is already plenty impressive. Unlike its GP2X counterpart, there's no support (yet) for CD-based game images, but compatibility with TG-16 ROMs (if you don't own the game, don't download em, 'kay?) is said to be high. Like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/iphone-gets-snes-emulation/">previous emulators</a> ported to iPhone, the retro console's controls are recreated on the touch screen. <br /><br />Apple is expected to launch its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/09/3g-iphone-rumors-building-up-steam/">"2.0" refresh of the iPhone</a> along with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/06/apple-announces-app-store-for-iphone-ipod-touch/">iPhone App Store</a> in just a couple of weeks, and we'd be jazzed to see a proper Virtual Console-esque suite of "sanctioned" emulators offered for download via the service.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/05/28/temper4iphone-emulates-turbografx-16-on-the-iphone/">TUAW</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/29/turbografx-16-comes-to-iphone-unofficially/">TurboGrafx-16 comes to iPhone (unofficially)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 May 2008 04:00:00 EST. Coming up on its eight birthday, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dreamcast">Sega Dreamcast</a> continues to prove that it's worthy of attention, with <a href="http://arcaderenaissance.blogspot.com/2007/08/redspotgames-announces-two-new.html">two new independent titles</a> announced for the aging system. Publisher RedSpotGames will be debuting these titles at this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lgc07">Leipzig Games Convention</a>, starting this Wednesday.<br /><br />The first game, <em>Dalforce</em>, is a vertical-scrolling "bullet hell" shooter title which allows for up to four players. The second, <em>Wind and Water Puzzle Battles</em>, is an action puzzle game being ported from the GP2X. According to Arcade Renaissance, both games are scheduled for first-quarter 2008 releases, although <a href="http://www.redspotgames.com/">RedSpotGames' website</a> is currently down for maintenance, and we can not confirm this. Both titles will, however, be shown off at Leipzig this week, so stay frosty as we bring you more details once the conference gets under way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/dreamcast-still-strong-two-new-indie-games-at-leipzig/">Dreamcast still strong, two new indie games at Leipzig</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Aug 2007 15:25:00 EST. The goal of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/22/pyweek-game-challenge-results-announced-winners-include-a-seaho/">competition</a> was to prove programming skillz and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/27/manly-site-lists-10-manliest-games-of-all-time/">overall manliness</a> by creating the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/22/superman-64-almost-had-an-evil-twin-on-the-ps1/">worst game evar</a> for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gp2x">GP2X</a>. Just released v0.9.1 adds official support for DS and GP2X, with a GP32 port promised soon, but bug-fixes for existing versions (e.g., Dreamcast, PS2, PSP) are not be overlooked. Highlights include:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Fixes for Humongous Entertainment games, including better support for international versions<br /></li>
    <li> Improved detection for the FM-TOWNS version of <em>Indy3</em></li>
    <li>Fixes for <em>The Feeble Files</em> (more non-English versions are supported)</li>
    <li>Parts of the <em>Kyrandia </em>engine have been rewritten (requires less CPU power)<br /></li>
    <li>PSP, PS2, and WinCE ports have been "greatly improved"</li>
    <li>PalmOS port is up-to-date; features separate build for Tapwave Zodiac</li>
    <li>WinCE port supports 2002 devices again</li>
</ul>
Is this new version gonna keep you from updating your PSP's firmware for the holiday flood of titles? Craig Rothwell, Director of GP32/2x Distribution, expects the Linux handheld sales to total 50,000 by the end of the year.<br /><br />Is 50,000 a lot? We think it's a reasonable amount and could sustain a well-run business. According to gamesindustry.biz, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/05/wired-reports-on-gizmondos-high-speed-crash-up/">ill-fated</a> Gizmondo <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=13006">sold less than 5,000 units</a> in its first three months. (Both devices were launched in the United Kingdom.) While the GP2X has had three times as long to reach 30,000, over its life-span, the GP2X has sold twice as well as the Gizmondo.<br /><br />The European Nintendo DS launch dwarfed both systems, totaling 87,000 units in two days. Comparing the GP2X and DS is like comparing an office softball team with the Yankees, but that doesn't mean that both can't coexist. (And yes, the DS Phat was caught juicing, which is why the Lite is so scrawny.)<br /><br />Read: <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6159783.html?part=rss&amp;tag=gs_news&amp;subj=6159783">Q&amp;A: GP2X chief Craig Rothwell</a><br />Read: <a href="http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/13-10-2006-3822.html">GP2X handheld expected to reach 50,000 sales by Xmas</a><br /><br />[Thanks, <a href="http://www.pro-g.co.uk">JamesO</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/15/gp2x-sells-30-000-units/">GP2x sells 30,000 units</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 15 Oct 2006 18:17:00 EST. If so, it seems like there's so many opportunities out there for you to make some moolah, and win some prizes (such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/27/keyboard-coming-spring-according-to-contest/">this</a>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/22/a-monetary-incentive-to-make-homebrew/">this</a>). DCEmu is <a href="http://www.dcemu.co.uk/dcgp2006.shtml">hosting a contest</a> where programmers develop an original piece of homebrew, whether it be games, demos or applications. Prizes include the incredibly flexible <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/22/updated-gp2x-handheld-mkii-shipping-now/">GP2X system</a>, gift certificates, and cash. You have until December 31st to submit an entry, so you have a lot of time to work on your original designs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/03/another-homebrewing-competition/">Another homebrewing competition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 03 Sep 2006 10:25:00 EST. Play Asia are now <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-d1-49-en-70-uq6.html">stocking</a> the GP2X MKII and, so as not to confuse it with the second edition, Wikipedia reveals the MKII is in fact the "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP2X#Firmware_.26_Hardware_updates">seventh edition</a>" of the console. Really, we're totally confused. Where's versions three through six?<br /><br />Regardless, the MKII upgrades include: <br />
<ul>
    <li><em>Preattached screen cover</em></li>
    <li><em>Larger (more grippy) joystick cap</em></li>
    <li><em>Firmware v2.0 (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP2X#Firmware_.26_Hardware_updates">features</a>)<br /></em></li>
    <li><em>Comes with 2 game demos (Vektar &amp; Payback)</em></li>
</ul>
Already have a GP2X? You can get some of that MKII flava by adding the game demos and upgrading to the new firmware; otherwise, $170 nets you the updated version. <br /><br />[Thanks craig; via <a href="http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=25312">DCEmu</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/22/updated-gp2x-handheld-mkii-shipping-now/">Updated GP2X handheld, MKII, shipping now</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 22 May 2006 23:30:00 EST. You'll remember the XGP as the swivel-faced "<a
href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/08/17/gamepark-xgp-handheld-game-console/">bastard child of a PSP and a
Sidekick.</a>" While Gamepark Holding's GP2X is being angled specifically as an open-source, emulation friendly
handheld, the XGP is a decidedly commercial product.<br /><br />The real surprise isn't the redesign, but the entirely
new unit dubbed the XGP Mini (image beneath the fold). Featuring a 2.2" screen and an SD card slot, the unit owes
more than a little of its design to Nintendo's minuscule GBA micro. It's hard to imagine how either of these products
could be successful--where competitors like the Ngage and Gizmondo weren't--if both of these products aren't going to
encourage emulation. <br /><br />If you're having trouble keeping your XGPs, GP2Xs, GP32s, and Gameparks straight,
check out the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XGP">Wikipedia entry</a>, which could either help or hurt your
chances of understanding this mess.<br /><br />[Via <a
href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/02/gamepark-announces-redesigned-xgp-and-surprise-xgp-mini/">Engadget</a>]<br
/><br />[<em>Update: fixed the name of the XGP Mini shown after the jump</em>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/06/gamepark-returns-with-new-xgp-handhelds/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gamepark returns with new XGP handhelds</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/06/gamepark-returns-with-new-xgp-handhelds/">Gamepark returns with new XGP handhelds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Mar 2006 22:30:00 EST.
