Bowling gave the example of hunting for medical supplies.

"You don't want to risk going out to forage in the game world, or maybe you did and can't find anything," he told GamesIndustry.biz, "but you know that there's a pharmacy four miles down the road in the real world. So you go out and you're out and about in the real world. You open up Human Element on your iPad. We're overlaying the world of Human Element onto the Googlemaps API, FourSquare business API, we're taking your real world and merging it with your game world." Bowling claimed this would be possible anywhere GPS data was available.

Bowling also suggested that connected experiences like the iPad game would begin to tell the Human Element story before the 2015 release date of the console game. "The 2015 deadline is the at-home, console experience. That experience, from a story standpoint, takes place 30 years after the event, after the apocalypse," he explained. "We can engage you in that universe a week, a month, a year after that event. Maybe through mobile, maybe through titles on the arcade, maybe through PSN, handheld titles. We can start telling that story leading up to that big event in 2015 where we tie them all together."
How Bowling's 'Human Element' brings real places into the zombie world originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 05 Jul 2012 20:15:00 EST. Among those features are standards like GPS tracking via a newly added Maps application, the ability to capture video, and the release of a support application for Mac OS X. It can also now serve mixed vanilla/chocolate froyo swirl. Finally!

Additionally, the update will banish mentions of the the phrase "PlayStation Network" from various services and replace it with the newly renamed "Sony Entertainment Network" branding. Considering that the PSP is still supported by Sony but has yet to receive any form of Mac support for content management, we're gonna go ahead and call this a big step forward.
PlayStation Vita's Feb. 8 update adds video capture, OS X support, GPS tracking originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Feb 2012 08:00:00 EST. She's certainly not the first celebrity to do some voice work for the GPS industry, but she's by far the coolest. It's a zip file with a bunch of wav files in it, compatible with Garmin Nuvi units -- the files should also work with Garmin Mobile XT units -- and is available as a free download to everyone who wants to be berated by an artificial intelligence while hunting down the closest Burger King. LiveArea is NGP's "game-oriented communication platform," according to Sony. In other words, it's the device's (touch-controlled!) user interface -- apparently replacing the XMB -- featuring access to the PlayStation Store, Trophies, PSN friends, messaging, the browser, and other applications.

Each game will have some form of LiveArea presence, too, apparently keeping you up to date on news and even its other players (in case you bore of simply playing the game).

Additionally, LiveArea will include the "Near" feature that tracks your location over time and creates a map of where you've been. (That's not creepy at all!) Read more about it here.
NGP 'LiveArea' UI to support Trophies, PSN friends and messaging originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 01:55:00 EST. There are plenty of homebrewed, game-themed voices for the TomTom GPS platform, but not many real developers take the time to turn their games' characters into tiny, digital cartographers. That's why we love The Behemoth: The studio recently made a TomTom voice out of Castle Crashers' Red Princess.
Continue reading Castle Crashers' Red Princess now decreeing TomTom directions

Castle Crashers' Red Princess now decreeing TomTom directions originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 22:00:00 EST. Released as a free download for owners of its Symbian^1 based phones (including the N97 and Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition), Nokia's Ovi Maps Racing uses GPS and satellite map data to let players create courses based on nearby streets. The game, developed by RedLynx (Trials HD), is a top-down racer reminiscent of, well, the company's own DrawRace.

We've seen games that utilize satellite maps for their levels before -- most notably (and recently) Sony's The Last Guy -- but the user-focused creation element of this title is certainly an intriguing one. Check out a video of Ovi Maps Racing after the break, and, if you have the game, let us know how it is in comments.
Here's a nifty app that's almost guaranteed not to make its way to America. x-Radar Portable released stealthily on the Japanese PlayStation Store yesterday for free. The app can detect a user's location and display a map with nearby points of interest. Users can take advantage of the PSP GPS accessory for the most accurate results, but PSPs only equipped with wi-fi access will still be able to use the service. PlaceEngine can determine your location via wi-fi, or you can manually input a train station to see what's nearby.

While most cell phones are equipped with similar services, x-Radar adds a few game-like attributes to make it distinctly PlayStation. For example, users will be able collect spots throughout the country and build a collection to share with friends. Like foursquare, the service will reward you as you discover new places, and you'll even be able to level up an avatar. It's time for another edition of Expensive and Awesome Stuff That You'll Never Be Able to Do!

Over at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2010, Polyphony Digital showed off a "GPS-track day unit," which is a little box with a card slot in it that you install in a very expensive car like, say, the Toyota FT-86G Concept, as seen above in the new trailer for Gran Turismo 5. That unit will then record your likely very expensive real-life run around a driving track like the famous Nürburgring lap, at which point you'll be able to pull a card out, plug it in your PS3, and then see the real-life run simulated inside the video game itself, where you can watch or even ghost race against it.

It was also mentioned at the Auto Salon that there will be a 3D version of GT5 out "as soon as 3D TVs become available on the market," so presumably later this year. Thanks for watching! Next time on Expensive and Awesome Stuff That You'll Never Be Able to Do: land your very own helicopter on your very own superyacht.

After the coming apocalypse, when the world devolves into an open-world racecourse, we'd be seemingly lost without the Garmins and TomToms of the bygone era. Fear not, though, for it seems a result of the globe-altering warming featured in Codemaster's Fuel is the appearance of giant, airborne ... pointers -- conveniently "pointing" out the path to the finish line. (All that's left, you see, is the finish line.) We suppose then, these guiding arrows are a fair trade for the vicious tornadoes and blinding sandstorms that also -- naturally -- plague this fascinating vision of the future.
Fuel: post-apocalyptic 'GPS' navigation included originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 24 Apr 2009 02:15:00 EST. Don't throw away those DS Lites just yet! GBalpha has announced the Ranger GPS system. which, if it does everything it's supposed to, sounds pretty sweet. The unit plugs into the GBA slot of your DS Lite (and presumably your old DS Phat), features a u-blox GPS module, support for Google Earth and Google Maps and even packs a rechargeable battery.

Sadly, the price remains a mystery, which doesn't really matter as the unit doesn't appear to be available anywhere just yet. Let's just hope it releases before E3; LA traffic is a nightmare.

[Via Engadget]
Find your way home with the Ranger GPS for DS Lite originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Apr 2009 18:15:00 EST. [Update: We're now classifying this story as a rumor, as there is no verifiable press release sent during CES 2009.]

Sony hasn't forgotten about North American GPS for the PSP; though, we suppose you have. We've heard since mid-2008 that the much-sought after service could be coming to North America in 2009, but since then, talk about peripheral had died down. However, according to PSP World, Sony reiterated interest in bringing the guidance system over at the Consumer Electronics Show this past weekend, suggesting that it could very well be on its way to release this year. The peripheral has already been implemented in Europe for several months now and in Japan since 2006.
Rumor: North American GPS still en route for this year originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. It's really real. Trust us.After making a debut at CES earlier this year, the GPS accessory disappeared off the face of the earth, with only vague promises that the device will be coming within the next nine months. We don't know what the hold up is, but IGN spotted a working unit at San Diego Comic-Con. Of note, they saw that the device can give different directions based on whether you're in a car, bike or simply on foot. Can Sony please just release this thing already?
Spotted @ Comic-Con: the PSP GPS peripheral originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 24 Jul 2008 12:00:00 EST. It only took, y'know years, but American PSP owners will be able to enjoy GPS navigation some time next year. Not only will the platform support navigation and maps, as expected, but John Koller wants to offer something a bit more. SCEA is investigating game development which can take advantage of GPS technology. Koller told MTV Multiplayer the upcoming peripheral "changes the dynamics of GPS but also changes the way developers think about games on PSP because you can start integrating GPS into it." According to Koller, Sony will introduce the GPS solution to third party publishers and is currently brainstorming ideas within its first-party studios. "There's been a number of things that our first-party worldwide studios have looked at, and they've been trying to look at different options," he said.
GPS games could be heading your way next year originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Jul 2008 02:00:00 EST. PSP brand manager John Koller has spoken out about the prospects of the PSP for the rest of 2008: he is confident that like the first half of 2008, key titles like Crisis Core: Final Fantasy and God of War: Chains of Olympus, along with multimedia functionality, will set the system apart from its competitors. Koller also believes the key to maintaining strong sales is to add "new features, new functionality." He also confirms the Go!Explore GPS will go on sale in the States in the next nine months and hopes to convey to consumers the PSP is part of a "broader cultural trend for content on the go."

Addressing the new iPhone App Store, which has many games available for download on it, Koller feels that the iPhone "is more of a threat to DS than anything else" because of its nature as a secondary gaming device, hence attracting more casual gamers. We agree -- with an onslaught of specialized exclusives coming up like Resistance: Retribution, Papapon 2 and Dissidia: Final Fantasy, it certainly seems the PSP is poised to have a bright future.
Sony: iPhone not a threat, GPS coming within 9 months originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 Jul 2008 14:45:00 EST. It's taking long enough. GPS for PSP is available in many territories around the world, but the US has been trailing behind. Still scheduled for within the next twelve months, the American version of the GPS peripheral will have a few enhancements over its earlier incarnations. The navigation software, created by Tele Atlas, will run entirely in 3D. The software will be available on UMD, and as a downloadable to store directly on Memory Stick. It will be priced between $100 and $200, and will include a carmount. According to Gizmodo, the GPS experience may be enhanced in the US: "Sony is thinking about treasure hunts, friend locaters and other geo-coolness."

In addition, more details about the mysterious PSP keyboard have been unearthed: the keyboard will plug into the AV/headphone port at the bottom, and will flip over to cover the PSP screen when not in use. Other than that new tidbit, the keyboard remains an elusive mystery. Hopefully, we'll learn more during E3.
More details on the US release of the PSP GPS and keyboard originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 22 May 2008 10:30:00 EST. The Go!Explore pack looks to be a rather fun and useful addition to the PSP's lineup of features. The GPS system is hitting France (and perhaps other parts of Europe) on July 2nd, if amazon.com's French site is to be believed. There are packages bundling both a GPS and PSP system: giving brand new consumers the chance to jump on the PSP bandwagon. We hope SCEA will announce a similar program in the not-too-distant future.

[Via MAXCONSOLE]
Go!Explore GPS system on French amazon.com: July release originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 13 May 2008 10:00:00 EST.
Europe gets all the fun stuff! Watch David Reeve's PlayStation Day presentation about the PSP, which talks about two key PSP products available across the Atlantic: PlayTV and Go!Explore. PlayTV gives PSP owners access to DVR content, through connectivity with PS3. Go!Explore is an affordable GPS utility, which adds yet another fancy tool to PSP's ever-expanding features list. A supposedly leaked PowerPoint presentation revealed some potentially new accessories from Sony. If this information turns out to be true, PSP owners can anticipate a new traveler case and Media Manager software this coming April/May. Both will retail for $20. More exciting, however, is the potential for a Skype Headset Kit. Currently, PSP owners must purchase two separate accessories in order for Skype to work. Providing one easy to purchase solution is far more ideal.

The same PowerPoint presentation also mentions that SCEA is planning to release the GPS peripheral in America for under $150. Unfortunately, when asked for comment, a SCEA rep informed us that "any information is speculation and rumor."
Rumor: New accessories coming in April originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 11 Mar 2008 10:05:00 EST. We know GPS is coming to PSP some time this year (in fact, we predicted it). So, when we see the peripheral being touted at GDC at Sony's booth on the show floor, our interest gets piqued. Considering the booth was underground, the device apparently had trouble figuring out a precise location. Oh well.

Let's hope for more news on an official release soon.

[Via Engadget]
Spotted@GDC: the PSP GPS receiver originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 25 Feb 2008 11:45:00 EST. Go!Explore is the European branding of PSP's GPS system. And, now it has a price. There will be three ways to purchase the system, depending on what accessories you'd like with it:

The GPS receiver for the Sony PSP is about to find its way out of Japan and into US gamers' hands. According to Sony's CES 2008 page, "Your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's, and even downloadable city guides."

No official release date or price - the peripheral in Japan retailed for approximately US $51. Of course, if you're impatient, you can always hack the PSP now.

[Via PSP Fanboy]
GPS for Sony PSP coming to US originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 06 Jan 2008 23:55:00 EST. The Consumer Electronics Show has been big for the PSP. Sony officially revealed plans for Skype on the PSP. Now, they've shown off GPS navigation for use with the PSP. The peripheral has been readily available in Japan for quite some time now, but this is the first official sign that the US will also receive the device.

The Sony CES website reveals that the peripheral will work with navigation software, provided on UMD. "Your PSP will provide 2D/3D locations, driving directions, POI's, and even downloadable city guides. With an easy search feature feature and customizable settings, GPS on PSP is the easiest way to navigate new areas and new cities."

An official release date and price have yet to be revealed, but we're glad to see it's finally coming. Tired of waiting for SCEA to bring the official GPS peripheral to the States? A cable manufacturer is trying to ease the pain by allowing you to connect standard third party GPS devices to the PSP. Obviously, it'll require a bit of tricky "haxz0rzing," but there's plenty of documentation on how to make your PSP an affordable GPS device. With a new upcoming cable, it'll even work on the new PSP-2000 systems.

[Via Engadget]
Cable allows easy hook-up of third party GPS systems originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 22 Oct 2007 11:40:00 EST. Sorry, Colin! The headline simply can't reveal how many small details were revealed in Stephen Totilo's incredibly extensive interview John Koller for MTV News. In the interview Koller revealed that all upcoming PSP games developed by Sony will take advantage of the system's full 333MHz speed, with no negative impact to battery life. Other accessories for the US include the upcoming GPS peripheral, which is currently being "tweaked" with an expected release in the next 10-12 months. The PSP camera "may get a spec change" before coming to America -- but the TV tuner will never make its way to the US.

Bringing downloadable games to PSP is one of the next things to tackle for Sony. echochrome was originally meant to be a downloadable PSN game for PSP, but it became much larger than anticipated. "It was initially going to be a download-service-only game," Koller said. "We changed it to a UMD because it's a very rich game. That's where their mind is. They're developing that kind of game." Thankfully, other downloadable PSP games are in the works. When can we expect them? In the next six to eight months.

In regard to the homebrew scene, Koller says that there were no talks between Sony and Dark_Alex, saying that "I think he's taking a hiatus." Watch out Nintendo, you're not the only one catering to the mom crowd. Sony's GPS-enhanced Minna no Golf series allows golfers to get data on real-world courses in Japan. A new lengthy ad in Japan highlights the PSP's GPS capabilities, and is targeted solely at the adult crowd. Is Sony trying to broaden their appeal? Certainly. However, will someone that picks up a PSP for the sole purpose of GPS pick up any other game on the system? Most likely not. Thankfully, Sony's going to release a handful of different UMDs with different golf courses to explore. That should make their golf-targeted endeavor more than profitable. Check out the ad, after the cut.
Continue reading Sony uses GPS to target new PSP crowd

Sony uses GPS to target new PSP crowd originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Jun 2007 10:45:00 EST. Developer area/code have put their location-based PC game Plundr onto the Nintendo DS -- the first of its kind, according to their website -- and showed it off at Where 2.0. The adventure game utilizes a Wi-Fi positioning system to give you different islands based on your physical location.

At each island, your pirate can buy, sell and fight for goods. According to the game's website, "depending on where you are in the physical world, you'll find different islands, different market prices and different ships to fight." You can try the PC version here, but desktop owners won't be able to enjoy it. The DS is one of the most portable options around, and we'd love to try this out. In Plundr's case, you're the captain of a pirate ship looking to pillage and swashbuckle your way to the top of the buccaneer chain.

Using WiFi positioning to track your movements and superimpose landmarks over your neighborhood map, Plundr builds islands that you can set sail for and investigate. Taking a walk to that coffee shop two blocks away will bring up a trading post where you can buy spices and deliver goods. If you head over to the nearby park, there's a few unsuspecting merchant ships to test your cannons on.

Developer area/code originally designed the title with laptops in mind, but working with the R4DS homebrew platform, the Manhattan-based company was able to port the game to our scurvy handheld and show off the fruits of its efforts at O'Reilly's Where 2.0 Conference late last May. Though we're still waiting to hear more about the clever game, these first shots of Plundr: Dangerous Shores that we scoured up will tide us over for now.
While the rest of the world watches, GPS continues to gain support and popularity in Japan. The latest commercial for Minna no Golf showcases a happy woman playing golf. Then, she uses the GPS device on her PSP to get details on the course she's actually playing on. Yatta!

It's interesting to see SCEJ promote the GPS peripheral so strongly in Japan. Certainly, the diminutive device deserves to get all the attention it can get. When will the rest of the world be able to join in?

[Update: IGN has revealed more details about the GPS support of Minna no Golf Ba. The game spans two UMDs due to the incredible size of these maps. "The first disk will include sixteen courses from southern Chiba along with one special course. The second disk will include fifteen courses from northern Chiba." Additional volumes are planned to be released later on, featuring even more golf courses throughout Japan.]

Minna no Golf ad highlights GPS functionality originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 13:30:00 EST. The GPS accessory for PSP isn't even announced for US release, but that hasn't stopped it from picking up some serious accolades. Our sister site, Engadget, proudly nominated the GPS device, most likely due to its innovative integration with games, truly compact size, and generally affordable price point. The PSP GPS must compete against other devices, such as Garmin nüvi 660, Mio c710, Pharos iGPS-500, and TomTom GO 910. When we last checked, Sony's peripheral wasn't doing too poorly, grabbing more than 20% of the vote. Not bad for a device with such a limited availability, no?

If you own the GPS accessory for your handheld and want to rock the vote, visit Engadget now.
PSP nominated for GPS device of the year originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Apr 2007 15:15:00 EST. The company said that many of these technologies had been in progress before the VoodooPC acquisition, but Rahul Sood and other VoodooPC leaders were able to see the gaming applications of previous research.

I spent some time trying mscape ("mediascape") and discussing the project with some of its engineers. This gaming platform -- which isn't meant to compete with a hardware-and-software solution like the DS or PSP -- has already been used in the real world, unlike most of the in-progress projects demonstrated.

Mscape sits on a PocketPC or other device, presenting an augmented reality game space. Other game designers and companies have tried to bridge the virtual world and the real world, with games that are played on devices by moving around outside. But HP's muscle may eventually help push these new experiences to mainstream gamers.
Continue reading Joystiq hands-on: HP's mscape

Joystiq hands-on: HP's mscape originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 07 Apr 2007 08:00:00 EST. Their handheld technology takes advantage of GPS navigation and accelerometers, similar to the ones found in Nintendo Wii. The basic premise is to allow players to actively play in real environments, such as a park. CNET's Tom Krazit explains: "The early concept involves a handheld and a series of small sensors that a game organizer could lay out around a city or park. Those sensors would trigger certain events in the game, like a bonus level or an attack by the bad guys, based on a small demonstration of the concept here."

While HP will most likely avoid actually manufacturing a console to compete against Sony and Nintendo, the technology is certainly intriguing. The new software, which must be purchased in stores, includes some new features:

Petamap: a database of user-submitted points of interest.

PlaceEngine: software that determines your location based on nearby wi-fi points

Pedestrian navigation routes, which include shortcuts through parks, tunnels, etc.

Disaster relief centers: just in case.

Many Americans have been wondering when the GPS accessory will ever be made available for use here. Unfortunately, Sony hasn't been too keen on releasing details. (Maybe when, or if, they release new colors?) Interested individuals can import the title, but note that US support will require the use of homebrew. Or play lots of Metal Gear Solid.

[Via PSP-Vault]
Updated GPS software to save you from disasters originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 18 Mar 2007 21:00:00 EST. In the above picture, you can see the DS Lite using WiFi triangulation (rather than GPS) to determine geoposition and relay the data to the user. While the GPS seems to be a great add-on for Japaneses PSP owners, it isn't nearly as useful for those outside of Japan. While homebrew GPS software does exist for the device, it can't compare to the official software or other GPS devices on the market. So maybe PSP owners should get their GPS fix in a different manner, unless it gets released around here that is.

Wish it would ... well, work outside of Japan? No worries. Deniska has updated the popular homebrew GPS application, MAP THIS! to now include support for the official GPS accessory. You'll need open-edition firmware 3.03 OE-B to run this beta application.

While the homebrew community is making incredible strides with projects like this, and support for full-frame video, we at PSP Fanboy are scratching our heads, wondering when Sony will ever "officially" catch up. Certainly, Sony Computer Entertainment of America wouldn't want to snub American PSP owners ... or do they? (Look at the lack of other colors, for starters.) For those that can run homebrew, now's the best time to pick up a GPS device from Play-Asia.

[Via DCEmu]
Sony official GPS now supported by homebrew originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 19 Jan 2007 10:25:00 EST.
