Well you can stop thinking that right now as the latest piece of news to come out of the PlayStation Premiere event in Tokyo is an announcement that GT 5 prologue will be available in Japan in October. What is effectively a demo for Gran Turismo 5 will feature full online support as well as some cars which will be featuring in this year's Tokyo Motor Show.

Whether it will be available in the US or EU in October is up in the air, however it's fairly safe to assume it will be out before the end of the year. There is no word yet on what the price will be for the download, considering the current PSN offering is downloadable for free.
Gran Turismo 5 Prologue coming to Japan in October originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 17 Jul 2007 11:00:00 EST. At Sony's E3 press conference, Sony showcased the stunning Gran Turismo 5 Prologue trailer. At first, we thought that some parts of the game were pre-rendered. We overheard one Sony developer telling us, off the record, that if any developer can make a game look that good, it's certainly Polyphony Digital.

Check out the new screenshots in our gallery:

It's real: Gran Turismo 5 Prologue originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 15 Jul 2007 14:32:00 EST. The creator of the Gran Turismo games, Kazunori Yamauchi, has confirmed that there will be an in-car view in Gran Turismo 5 -- a first for the Gran Turismo series. Speaking to French motorsports TV show Turbo, Yamauchi said:

"To translate the real car into 3D, we use data and assets provided by the car manufacturers, but we also use a scanner that completely digitizes a car. Here's a scoop: We're also modeling the dashboards because you can drive from the interior view in the upcoming Gran Turismo 5."

The in-car view is something that fans have been requesting for a long time, so this should make quite a few people happy. It seems like Polyphony Digital is really pulling out all the stops this time around; this combined with car damage, shows that the Gran Turismo series truly is going next-gen (sorry GT HD -- you don't count). Makes you wonder how many of the changes are because of Microsoft's driving games though. PGR 3 has a great in-car camera, and Forza 2 has damage modeling already and they both have online play. So the Gran Turismo series definitely has some catching up to do in some areas.
In-car view confirmed for Gran Turismo 5 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Jun 2007 21:00:00 EST. Alright, this is getting ridiculous. For the third time in almost as many months, a sports model from Project Gotham Racing 3 has becoming an unwitting spokesmodel for Sony's PlayStation 3. Having already been mistaken for Gran Turismo HD and used to promote the PS3 in a KIA ad, Microsoft's exotic car racer now finds itself inside Dutch magazine, Mediamarkt, as posted in the Bizarre Creations forums. The depicted Saleen has likely been in those pages before... just not in an article discussing the PlayStation 3's future.

Is this indicative of some deeply rooted desire for a multiplatform excursion for the series? Perhaps it's some subtle commentary on the lack of distinguishing features in the racing genre? We'll ponder these questions and more once we've finished our race in the Forizmo demo. Or whatever.

[Thanks, v]
Seriously, Project Gotham Racing 3 is not a PS3 game originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 18 May 2007 19:50:00 EST. A just punishment for such a terrible mangling of words, not to mention the trickery of "Final Forza 2" leading people to believe that Microsoft was releasing a bizarre automotive RPG, complete with mutant mechanics and bottles of restorative oil. No, the relevant game is Forza 2, simmy sequel to 2005's foray into car customization, reckless racing and all-round Gran Turismo-ing.

The official Forza Motorsport 2 website has unveiled the full list of cars to be included in the final game when it screeches into stores this May. Numbering 310 and representing enough reflective metal to burn holes through the back of your head, the list of cars is sure to please fans unsatisfied by the forthcoming demo's comparatively meager offering of 24 vehicles. It's noted that seven of the 310 cars have been deemed "special," with some only being available to pre-order deals and the game's collectors edition. The "controversial unicorn cars" will also be exclusively available for a limited time in the game's online auction house.

Racing enthusiasts are encouraged to look, use the Forza page and inspect the list closely as they attempt to answer the question, "Is there vroom for improvement?"

Update: Article author shot as well.

[Via Xbox 360 Fanboy]
Final Forza 2 car list rev-vealed, headline writer shot originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 20 Apr 2007 20:50:00 EST. Sony has sent word of their new offerings for the US PlayStation Network today. Most importantly for racing fans, Gran Turismo HD Concept will be upgraded for free to version 1.2, which enables force feedback through Logitech steering wheel peripherals. (European gamers have been enjoying GTHD 1.2 since the console's launch in the region.)

The Grand Theft Auto IV trailer is also available for download in high definition, as is the Armored Core 4 demo.
Analysts, for some reason or another, are important to the industry. Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital Markets commented on Sony's recent price drop of the machine, saying it will give the platform an important "shot in the arm." As the first official price cut since the product's launch more than two years ago, marketing will be crucial. Thankfully, according to Sebastian, Sony has a plan: "Sony is planning to support the pricing move with a new print and online marketing campaign targeted at young adults and teens." Let's hope it's better than what we've seen so far.

Price is one of the sole detriments to PSP's performance. With a lower price, Sebastian notes, the system should sell much better: "We note that a Wal-Mart promotion on Black Friday last year generated significant sales volume for the PSP at a discounted price of $169, providing one indication of potential consumer demand. We also believe the potential release of Gran Turismo for the PSP in 2007 could further boost unit sales." Wait? Did he mention Gran Turismo? Isn't that game canceled? Or maybe it's not. Let's hope that he knows something we don't.

The battle's far from over, the analyst reminds us. "It is too early to conclude whether Sony's pricing action will cause game developers to increase the pipeline of new PSP titles." Certainly, the price drop is encouraging, but "at the new $169 price, we note that the PSP is still $40 higher than Nintendo's DS."

European PlayStation 3 owners now have something they can tout over their Japanese and North American brethren. Though they did wait months longer for the console's release, it seems that they are privileged to an updated version of Gran Turismo HD Concept, and version 2.0 sports force feedback support for racing wheels.

But force feedback is last-gen, you say? Vibrating controllers of Sony's past have won Emmys, we say. Racing fans who are dedicated to the genre enough to buy a wheel peripheral deserve to have as immersive an experience as possible, even if it's just one race course. This bodes well for future releases (as well as the unknown known Sixaxis with rumble). As of this writing, the U.S. version is still 1.1, but we expect to get our rumble shortly.
Gran Turismo HD Euro update supports force feedback racing wheels originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Mar 2007 18:00:00 EST. Sony's racing sim joins Manhunt, Carmaggedon, and Canis Canem [Edit] (but not oft-targeted series Grand Theft Auto -- or Pac-Man). GT landed on the list following the trial of two boy racers whose reckless driving led to a fatal car crash, killing 79-year-old Phylis Williams. Both men were cleared of "causing death by dangerous driving"; instead fined relatively small amounts (£1,000 and £750), in addition to having points deducted from their licenses.

Immediately preceding the crash, one of the "bloody chavs," 19-year-old Christopher Hayden, had been playing Gran Turismo (on an in-car LCD monitor) while parked alongside a road. The court seemed convinced that playing the game encouraged Hayden to engage in the impromptu race; The Times took it a step further, placing GT in the company of "killers." *Sigh* ... another game catching the blame for senseless tragedy...

[Via Guardian Unlimited]
Gran Turismo added to list of 'killer games' originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 16 Feb 2007 19:25:00 EST. It's rumored to feature several cars and circuits apart from what we experienced with Gran Turismo HD. Not to mention some online network play via the Gran Turismo Network.

Well, since this comes out in the Fall and the next full iteration of the GT series is due out in the Spring of '08, we've got to wonder if this will follow GTHD in some respects. Namely, will it be free to download? We're going to vote 'yes' because the Gran Turismo series is pretty much Sony property. Sony wants to keep their network free and there's no reason to charge us for that. For third-party games there'll probably be a fee once demos start rolling out. What do you guys think?

[via Joystiq]
Gran Turismo 5 "Prologue" to hit the PS Store this Fall originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Feb 2007 10:15:00 EST. Coupled with the second best-selling franchise Pokémon (also a Nintendo property), the two series, which have sold a combined 348 million games worldwide, account for nearly 34% of the total sales of the top-twenty best-selling franchises; which include two additional Nintendo IPs ranked in the top ten, Donkey Kong and Zelda. So what's Nintendo's secret?

Cross-culture appeal, spin-offs (e.g., racers, sports titles, puzzlers), brand saturation (e.g., apparel, card games, TV shows), and E-ratings all appear part of a profitable formula built for the long haul.
Continue reading Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability

Nintendo holds key to franchise longevity, profitability originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 10 Jan 2007 18:23:00 EST.
Motor Trend's 2007 Power List has been released and a surprised face has emerged on it -- the creator of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi. The list chronicles those who make a significant impact on the automotive world. While many of us agree that Gran Turismo is an excellent title that did wonders in the realm of racing simulation, to hit the Power List is an incredible feat. Yamauchi secured a spot at #29, ahead of faces like the CEOs of Honda and Ferrari. The gaming world applauds you, Mr. Yamauchi, you've moved video games another step toward being a fully legitimized source of entertainment.

Gran Turismo creator on Motor Trend's Power List originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 05 Jan 2007 03:52:00 EST. The retailer is notorious for accidentally revealing crucial release info, but in this case, we're willing to bet that they're simply moving the date so that they can still hold on to pre-orders (some undoubtedly made nearly two years ago!).

The game is now listed as to come out on July 2nd. Japan gets to download the free GTHD demo on December 24th, we know, but what does it include? New details have surfaced and the available cars and track are known. The track is Eiger Nordwand, available in both normal and reverse racing modes. The cars are thus:

Suzuki Cappuccino '95

Mazda Eunos Roadster '89

Honda Integra Type R'04 (yes, the Integra is a Honda)

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV GSR'96

Infinity G35 Coupe

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX GSR'05

Lotus Elise 111R'04

Nissan Sky Liner GT-R V Spec II '94

Toyota Celica GT-FOUR Rally Car '95

Ferrari 599'06

You start with the Cappuccino, just like every day of my life (har, har), and by completing certain criteria, you unlock the next car. So on and so forth. No online play, but you can post your scores online and the top-ranking fellows even have the race itself up for download. Pretty snazzy! Hope we can get into it, also.
Gran Turismo HD/5 Demo details are here! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Dec 2006 15:30:00 EST. Today, Nissan is mostly known for its powerful Skyline sports motor (which is sold in the States under the infinitely sillier name of Infiniti G35). As there's a new model of Skyline in production at Nissan -- and what with Sony's dramatic Gran Turismo HD rethink -- there's no time like the present for the two companies to announce a big love-in. Or, more appositely, a "collaboration."

We're not sure of the details of the "collaboration," but it's given Sony cause to post a two-minute video clip on the Japanese PlayStation Store this lunchtime. We downloaded it to our PS3 and reminisced about childhood journeys to the zoo and, thanks to Sony's Japanese website, you can do the same even if you don't have a PS3 (but you do need one-time Datsun-owning parents). Click for the HD flick, or peep the embedded version below.
Continue reading Sony and Nissan collaborate to keep the GT5 engine turning

Sony and Nissan collaborate to keep the GT5 engine turning originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Dec 2006 21:35:00 EST. Right after some amazing screenshots were revealed, Sony and Polyphony decided to cut the crap and halt production of Gran Turismo HD, focusing solely on Gran Turismo 5 due out in 2008. GTHD is, however, going to come out as a demo on December 24th, offering a little less than a dozen cars and two variations of one track. It's supposed to be a Japan-only demo, but they couldn't possibly keep it away from everyone else. Could they? Now... while this is pretty sad news (even though people were complaining about the microtransactions idea and people will know complain about a free demo... go figure), we have to think... could this demo truly be more of a lead-in to Gran Turismo 5 instead of the resignation of GTHD? A taste of what to come, one may say. Leave us your thoughts.
Gran Turismo HD resigns itself to demo world originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 01 Dec 2006 14:00:00 EST. The game, which was due for release in Japan this month, has officially been cancelled, leaving developer Polyphony Digital to focus its energy on the completion of Gran Turismo 5. All is not lost, however, as what was Gran Turismo HD will now be offered through the PlayStation Store as Gran Turismo HD Concept -- essentially a playable preview of Gran Turismo 5.

GTHD Concept will be free to download and becomes available in Japan on December 24. There is currently no confirmation of a worldwide release date (what a nice holiday treat though!). Producer Kazunori Yamauchi recently went on record saying the PSP version of Gran Turismo 4 still exists, and will connect to the PS3 "similar to how a PC connects with a cell phone. Considering how Gran Turismo HD looks to disappoint, I might be done with this series altogther. Of those titles, two were exclusives for the PSP. Here are the winners, in no particular order:

Elebits (Konami) for the Wii

Gyakuten Saiban 4 [Phoenix Wright] (Capcom) for the DS

Gran Turismo HD (Sony) for the PS3

The Eye of Judgment (Sony) for the PS3

Seiken Densetsu 4 [Dawn of Mana] (Square Enix) for the PS2

Tales of Destiny (Namco Bandai) for the PS2

Blue Dragon (Microsoft) for the Xbox 360

Heavenly Sword (Sony) for the PS3

Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops (Konami) for the PSP

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (Capcom) for the PSP

Lost Planet (Capcom) for the Xbox 360

This should come as no surprise. There are so many excellent games at TGS this year, that it must've been nigh impossible to even narrow the list down. But, for those of you that are battling a fanboy war, you might want to note that PSP got two titles, and the DS only got one.

[Via Joystiq]
TGS 06: Best in Show, according to CESA originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 24 Sep 2006 01:45:00 EST. In fact, the mere suggestion that a premier racing game would be released without vehicles or courses (arguably two of the most important elements in such a game) is so beyond what is defined as "ridiculous", things like tap dancing unicorns and flying kangaroos can actually gaze at said suggestion through a telescope. That reason alone is worth marking this story as a rumor, though it's certainly not the only one. If we're to believe the forum-posted translation of the latest interview in Famitsu, Kazunori Yamauchi has big plans in store for his beloved automotive franchise -- big plans composed of teeny tiny transactions.

Gran Turismo HD will supposedly see release in two versions. The first, entitled Gran Turismo HD: Premium, amounts to nothing more than a demo of, you guessed it, Gran Turismo 5. The 30 included cars and two undoubtedly exciting tracks are rendered in pristine PS3 glory and are meant to give you a solid idea of what Yamauchi and friends are putting together for a full release in 2008. Two more tracks and 30 extra cars can be purchased and downloaded for this version. If you prefer purchasing a full game instead of an extended prologue, perhaps Gran Turismo HD: Classic would be more your speed. Or perhaps not.

Though the Classic moniker may stem from the fact that you're getting a high resolution PS2 game, you may distinctly recall the original game actually giving you hundreds upon hundreds of cars for your $50. Not so with this version. Every car and every track may be purchased and downloaded from Sony's online network. The interview mentions a price of 50-100 yen per vehicle ($0.43 - $0.85) and 200 - 500 yen per track ($1.71 - $4.26). Being generous and sticking to the low end of the scale results in $408 spent if you want all 750 cars and all 50 tracks (roughly what you got in Gran Turismo 4). Moving up on the scale approaches values that surpass what you paid for the PS3 (newsflash: a lot) to begin with.

Is any of this true? 1UP's Luke Smith points to a more utopian quote (his version actually gives you one car!) by Sony's Phil Harrison that seems to match up with this story: "Imagine Gran Turismo shipping on a disc with one car and one track. And then you can browse, online, a dynamic circuit of vehicles that's growing every day because either the car manufacturers are adding new vehicles or we're adding new vehicles. And you can see a specific-type car that's being called up and say, 'I think I'll play with that one. Let me download and play it.'" Seems more likely that the quote created the story. Until Sony confirms (unlikely) or denies it later this week, consider this an entertaining vilification of the microtransaction and nothing more.
Dubious rumor: Gran Turismo HD to ship without cars or tracks originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Sep 2006 21:20:00 EST. The "indefinitely delayed" game was pushed aside so that the development team can finish their work on the PlayStation 3 follow-up in the Gran Turismo series. Once they're done with that (and who knows how long that'll take?), the development team expects to move onto finishing the PSP game.

Sadly, it appears that the game probably could've been released much earlier: "We've reached the stage where a GT4 equivalent runs on the PSP hardware," Polyphony Digital commented to Eurogamer. While the PSP doesn't suffer from a lack of racing titles, it's disappointing to see one of Sony's premiere development studios simply abandoning work on the handheld.

[Via PSP Vault]
Gran Turismo Mobile shoved aside for PS3 dev originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 06 Sep 2006 20:45:00 EST. Think of it as a site for the PS3, where some of the biggest game talents have lengthy interviews about the new console and pretty much flatter the heck out of it. While IGN did a good job of summing up the interview with Gran Turismo producer Kazunori Yamauchi, we can at least tell you what each nine-minute segment is about.

Graphics (resolution jump, HD) will surprise gamers with finished products

Real life physics can be worked into games, along with hundreds of bystanders watching a race

Online network or networking... will turn into something new the whole world can understand and get in on

Viewable distance -- able to see hundreds of meters ahead in a race now instead of thirty or so

Gran Turismo will change and evolve, sending new car data across the network almost daily

Not only able to race against others over the network, a community of sorts will form

PS3 as a television revolution, changing what is meant when we ask "what's on tv?"

Games and movies are on equal ground with the PS3 -- no more excuses of "it's just a game"... finer details and programming are necessary. (So this weeds out the shoddy games? Hmm.)

Yamauchi closes by saying he wishes to change the world with his games and the PS3 is the tool to cause such a revolution

Wow! Now that's flattery. We'll have to see how Gran Turismo's latest incarnation turns out and if any of these points are realized. Surely some will, but a revolution? Wasn't there another system claiming to be a "Revolution"? That's different, but hey. Check out the story on IGN if you want a little more detail on any of the points, though there's not too much else to scrape from it unless you understand Japanese and watch the PlayBeyond interview.
Gran Turismo producer flatters -- PS3 blushes, overheats originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Aug 2006 14:30:00 EST. I mean, it comes out November 1st! And at $40, it doesn't seem like too bad of a deal, right?

Wrong. It appears that Best Buy just wants your pre-order deposit. Gamestop.com doesn't have the game in their database and neither does amazon.com. The last time Sony even spoke about Gran Turismo for PSP was in January, when they "delayed" the game. To make matters worse, the game doesn't even appear on the (admittedly incomplete) TGS showing they have planned.

buzaw0nk, just cancel your pre-order before Best Buy steals your money for good. I'm guessing this game (if it ever comes) won't come out for a very long time.
Best Buy steals your money with GT4 preorder originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 26 Aug 2006 10:45:00 EST. As reported last month, the download contains 12 new beautifully shaped hunks of metal, fit for driving around the streets of London and gazing at for embarrassing amounts of time. Unlike last month, however, the pack is available for download right now. In case you didn't get it the first time, here's the list of included vehicles, available for 60 MS points ($0.75) seperately or 400 MS points ($5) as a group.
In addition, you'll be prompted to update the game once you log on and be pleased to welcome some new (and way overdue) features. It's finally possible to upload the stunningly artistic or hopelessly amateurish images you've created in the game's photo mode to the official PGR3 website. It doesn't seem to be fully operational yet, but there is likely a very large tantrum in store should that not change in the near future.

New multiplayer game modes come in the form of "Free Roam Points," "Team Free Roam Points" and a series favorite, "Cat and Mouse." The rules of the latter mode dictate that teams comprised of two cars each, one being an E-class vehicle, compete to have their slower car be the first to cross the finish line. If the other, faster car crosses the line first, the team loses instantly. The update also adds matching achievements should you need any further incentive to venture online.

[Thanks Xbudd!]

Previously:

In an Xbox World Australia <strike>love letter</strike> interview, lead designer Dan Greenawalt explains that the upcoming Xbox 360 racing sim will include an online TV mode, much like the one found in PGR3.

"In Forza Motorsport 2, you won't just be watching a bunch of Ferraris racing together. You'll be watching completely customized Ferraris racing in a simulation environment. The personality of the driver emerges in Forza Motorsport TV. Paint schemes and physics mastery add to the excitement and diversity of the 'telecasts'." Exciting news, certainly if you've discovered that watching is the best part of playing a game.

All joking aside, it is heartening to see PGR3's solid online implementation finding its way into another flagship franchise. Greenawalt goes on to highlight the game's 60 frames-per-second graphical glory, its more nuanced Drivatar AI system and a photo mode that -- get this -- may allow you to share your virtual snaps with friends. Let's hope Microsoft remembers to share that marvelous technology with the Project Gotham team.

Well, maybe not all joking then.

[Via Eurogamer]
Forza 2 jacks PGR3 technology originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 21 Jun 2006 21:55:00 EST. And you've got three weeks to do it.

This is what was going through Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi when he was personally asked by Ken Kutaragi to have something ready for E3 concerning Gran Turismo. So with three weeks to go before the big event, the staff set to work. The magic happened thanks to hi-res car models from the Photo Mode in Gran Turismo 4.

Now if only every developer had that kind of work ethic (Duke Nukem Forever anyone?).
Pressures to deliver Gran Turismo HD demo originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jun 2006 12:00:00 EST. The idea is to show off the muscle behind the PS3, and anyone would be hard to argue that these fall short of doing just that. Of course what would a next-gen Sony console be without some sort of Gran Turismo installment? This statement should give fans of the series something to look forward to: "The wait for the next generation of Gran Turismo, post launch of PS3, may not be as long as you think."
New next-gen Gran Turismo screens originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jun 2006 12:30:00 EST. Driving the same car in-game and forreal -- a Honda NSX -- Jeremy tried to match his GT4 time on the real raceway, with surprising results.

Thisvideo clip catalogues his adventures, and is sobering viewing for anyone who thinks that excelling at PGR3 or GT makesyou a top-notch race driver. The Top Gear episode is repeated on BBC2 at 7pm on New Year's Day for UKviewers.

Choice quote: "That's not a corner on the PlayStation!"

[Thanks, dutchhenk]
Putting virtual driving skills to the test originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Dec 2005 19:00:00 EST.
