Grab your night-vision goggles and strap on your Kevlar, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Splinter Cell: Double Agent have been added to Xbox Live's Games on Demand service. While GRAW is available in nearly all Xbox Live regions, Splinter Cell: Double Agent is only available to (most) European Xbox Live users. Prices vary by region, but we're confident in saying that no matter where you live, the asking price is probably too high for games that launched in 2006.
GRAW and Splinter Cell: Double Agent infiltrate Games on Demand originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 10:39:00 EST. Tom Clancy might be this generation's Nostradamus. Although off by about three months, the first level in 2001's Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is eerily familiar to the past week's events, where Russia and South Ossetian rebels have been fighting with Georgia. Unlike Ghost Recon, however, there has been no signs of US special forces armed with technologically advanced firepower and controlled by a mysterious "player."

Scholars are already sifting through The Great Texts in anticipation of any potential conflicts in 2014 Mexico City.

[Via Game Politics]
Russian-Georgia conflict predicted by Ghost Recon originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 14 Aug 2008 04:00:00 EST. What's this? More rumors about another Halo? The latest Gamespot Rumor Control has a source that claims the next Halo title will be tactical, "a cross between Ghost Recon and Gears of War" and will be announced sometime this year (maybe tomorrow?). According to the source, the "darker, grittier" iteration is more akin to Neil Blomkamp's shorts. Oh yeah, and that Master Chief guy is nowhere to be found.

In terms of gameplay, you can reportedly play as an entire squad (huh?) in the entire campaign, and there will be online co-op. The mention of Ghost Recon is particularly interesting, as a former creative director from G.R.A.W. developer Red Storm joined Bungie in August 2007. Gamespot seems confident with their source, and that would make for quite a big E3 announcement.
Rumor: Next Halo is 'darker, grittier,' tactical and without Master Chief originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 13 Jul 2008 23:30:00 EST. One of our eagle-eyed readers tipped us off to an interesting development on the official Ghost Recon site. Users are treated to a large smoking file flash overlay when the site is loaded up. It appears that some information still marks the burning folder but as it stands the entire thing is a mystery. With the recent release of Rainbow Six Vegas 2, the ownership agreement with Tom Clancy and the continued domination of Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on Xbox Live (proving gamers want more than just Halo 3) is it possible this new smoking file could contain a gun? A gun called Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 3?

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 silently released to PSP systems, with no advertising and no coverage. Perhaps Ubisoft was too afraid to send review copies? (As of writing, there are no published online reviews of the game.)

Without the help of critics, we can only look to you, our readers, for sage advice on this game. PSP GadgetZ has once again captured some of the first footage of the game. Yann Le Tensorer, who co-created the graphics engine powering GRAW and the upcoming Beowulf, re-ckons that any uphill development battles are to blame on the learning curve associated with newer hardware. "It's wrong to say it's harder to code on the PlayStation 3, it's just something that needs to be learnt," he told GamesIndustry.Biz. He goes on to stun the less observant by pointing out that "it's just a different console."

Le Tensorer isn't the first to comment on the hardware's perceived difficulty. In June, Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi engaged in less subtle commentary by simply telling complaining PS3 developers to "get out of the ring." The GRAW developer goes on to state, "Developers might says [sic] it's harder because it just takes time to understand the technology, we're still early in the lifecycle."

In other words, it is tougher to program for the system, but only while you're still learning the technological ropes. It seems a fair explanation for the publisher's poorly received Splinter Cell: Double Agent port and EA's lack of frames in Madden NFL 08 -- at least from a developer's point of view. Consumers may feel otherwise as they await the PS3 arrival of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2.
GRAW developer: PS3 not harder to code for than 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 17 Aug 2007 17:15:00 EST. Allen doesn't say what game he'll be working on, but having been a Marine and working on one of the top military-themed franchises in existence, we're going to guess it involves guns -- which he seems well-versed in.

So, super speculation time. Now that Bungie has Halo 3 almost in the bag and they've brought this guy on board, what could they be working on? A Halo-themed squad game? A Halo-themed squad game? Or, a Halo-themed squad game? What, you don't think it'll be a squad game? Ohhh, you don't think it'll be Halo-themed. OK, in other news, Nintendo isn't making Mario games anymore either.
Ghost Recon creative director moves to Bungie originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 15 Aug 2007 18:28:00 EST. MCV notes that the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter team is behind the poetic adaptation of the poetic adaptation, with the voice talents of Beowulf stars Angelina Jolie and Anthony Hopkins expected to feature.

Speaking at the ongoing Ubidays conference in Paris, Ubisoft Europe chief, Alain Tascan, promised that Beowulf would "reinvent the hack and slash genre." Perhaps the publisher plans switch things up, defy convention and craft a slash and then hack game instead? Let's aim for another King Kong and not another TMNT, shall we?
Ubisoft's Ghost Recon team developing Beowulf game originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 23 May 2007 10:15:00 EST. The Xbox 360 version of GRAW 2 released in March. No explanation is given for the delay.

It's no secret now that Ubisoft has not been happy with the PS3's sales. The delay doesn't mean they are adding extra content -- although given the extra time sitting around it'd be nice. All PS3 owners can do now is hope this game does eventually come out and, with any luck, won't just be canceled like the PS3 version of THQ's Saints Row.

[Via PS3Fanboy]
PS3's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 delayed again originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 May 2007 16:28:00 EST. Leading to the obvious conclusion: Ubisoft needs to somehow combine the gritty realism of the Tom Clancy franchise with the anthropomorphic antics of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Politically charged yet irresistibly adorable properties like Tom Clancy's Splinter Shell and Tom Clancy's The War on Terrapins are sure to tap into hitherto untapped fountains of marketability and financial prosperity. Not that Ubisoft is currently in dire need of money, mind you. Gamasutra's detailing of L'Ubi's most recent financial report suggests that the publisher is already exceeding analyst expectations by exchanging one type of green for another.

The company's fourth quarter sales saw an increase of 37% to $267.5 million, largely instigated by the one million unit success of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 on Xbox 360, as well as the TMNT film-based game which dragged in 1.1 million units in its eight platform-wide net. Sales for the full 2006/2007 fiscal year stand at $923.4 million following a jump of 24.4%, with earlier titles such as Red Steel, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas and Petz being key contributors.

Ubisoft expects profitability to increase further in the coming year by supporting new-gen consoles and expanding their presence in "the casual market on the Wii and Nintendo DS systems." Oh! We've yet to add casual games into our bubbling cauldron of cross-franchise success! So, that'll be Tom Clancy's Krang Age, then?
Ubisoft fourth quarter sales pushed up by warfighters, turtles originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 16:04:00 EST. Yes sir, $20 will get you one of the prettiest looking advanced war fighting games this side of the moon. The dubious septuplet and their new release dates:

Splinter Cell: Double Agent -- March 30

NBA 2k7 -- April 6

F.E.A.R. -- April 20

Oblivion -- April 27

Untold Legends -- April 27

GRAW 2 -- June 2007

Rainbow Six: Vegas -- Spring 2007

While more than a few of those are top-notch titles, Sony still has 27 launch titles -- 23 disc-based and four downloadable -- and at their disposal, including Virtua Fighter 5. Will the absence of these seven games affect the launch? No more than the price, and the delays aren't very far behind the March 23 launch. In three months, no one is going to care about the delays. The initial momentum lost, however, is debatable.
Horrible games like Bomberman Act Zero and NBA Live '07 made the list as well as our favorites like Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas. We agree with most of their picks, but really agree with hating NBA Live's "Online With 1,000 People", GRAW's "Committed (Multiplayer)" and FFXI's ridiculous "Reach Level 75 with each character class". We guess this article made us further realize that there are truly lame achievements out there and that we have to be careful. Remember, friends don't let friends spend days on end trying to earn lame achievements. True, the magazine does cost $10, but if you're a regular subscriber or are a religious purchaser, then all the better. If you remember, the Chapter 2 content was originally released to on the XBLM for a whopping 1200 Microsoft Points, but was recently discounted to a more reasonable 600 Points. So, if you play GRAW, buy the April issue of OXM, haven't purchased the Chapter 2 content, and won't be purchasing GRAW 2 ... then it'll be like Christmas all over again, but in March.

[Via Joystiq, Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]
Free GRAW Chapter 2 in latest OXM originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Mar 2007 13:00:00 EST. Last week, Crackdown came on strong with bronze position on the Live top ten. Now it's swapped spots with Rainbow Six: Vegas as Call of Duty 3 continues to be just shy of the podium. GRAW 2's mulitplayer demo makes a return to take the Crackdown demo's position, which moved to 7th. Madden refuses to budge at sixth while Lost Planet and Oblivion get nudged to eighth and ninth, respectively. GRAW rounds out the bottom of the list while last, and obviously not least, Gears of War retains its top spot over all of Xbox Live-dom. Do you feel slightly confused? If so, our simple, yet eloquent list awaits your review after the break, complete with last weeks standings in parentheses.
Continue reading Live top ten: Sin City descends

Live top ten: Sin City descends originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 19:15:00 EST. For this week's release of GRAW 2 Circuit City will be discounting the game by $10 and will retail for $49.99. It's not an amazing offer, but it sure beats paying the full $59.99 price tag. And, as an added bonus, if the game isn't in store by 2PM on Wednesday they'll give you a $20 gift card. So, save yourself $10 on the (very similar to GRAW) sequel and hope the UPS guy gets lost in the massive urban sprawl.
$10 off GRAW 2 this week only originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 05 Mar 2007 16:00:00 EST.
Speaking to Godfree from Gamertag Radio, Official Xbox Magazine writer Ryan McCaffrey revealed that the April issue will include Chapter 2 of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for free (the revelation is found 61 minutes into the interview). Chapter 2 was initially released on Xbox Live in June for 1,200 MS points but has since been halved to 600 MS points, or $7.50 in US dollars.

Early in the interview, which starts about 36 minutes into the podcast, McCaffrey laments the struggle of getting good content on the included disc to justify its existence, especially with Xbox Live Marketplace being an efficient and convenient means to obtain demos for free. Still, with a purported subscriber base of 425,000, they don't seem to be doing too bad. McCaffrey cited an issue from early last year where their disc included a free 6-week trial of Final Fantasy XI, and noted that they will try to have similar goodies whenever an MMO is slated for Xbox 360.

Around the 39 minute mark, McCaffrey also revealed OXM Universe, "a persistent game" found on the disc. The point of the game is to build a probe and spaceship and interact with other OXM subscribers online (presumably online via the computer, though an Xbox Live title would be an interesting test of convergence).

Also available on the OXM disc will be the GRAW2 demo as well as an "exclusive review" of the full game. The April issue of OXM will hit newsstands soon for $10 (or $2.50, if you exclude the standard price of GRAW Ch. 2)
OXM bribes readers with free GRAW Chapter 2 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 01 Mar 2007 17:15:00 EST. If you didn't know, the Platinum Hits program is a list of games that have been singled out to retail for $29.99, because they "supposedly" achieved greatness during their lifetime. We may not always agree with certain games that come to the Platinum Hits, but nobody can disagree with the cheaper pricetag. Below is a list of games that will become Platinum Hits in North America.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat

The assortment of robotics and unmanned vehicles are controlled, in part, by modified Xbox 360 controllers, which look to be wired into Cross-Com devices straight outta GRAW. What?! The military didn't budget for wireless controllers? That's, like, sooo last-gen...

But seriously, how far could FCS technology evolve? Will future American soldiers be judged by how fast they can work their thumbs? Will boot camp become a LAN lab?
Ubisoft sent out emails this morning with a few morsels of information to make us fanboys out there starving for more. They gave word that there will be a demo for Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 available on Xbox Live Marketplace in the very near future. No word yet if the demo will be either single player or multiplayer, although in a perfect world it would be both. News0r presupposes that the demo will be available before the end of January, which isn't too much of a stretch, so hopefully we'll be taking headshots on tangos before dying of hunger. So, if you could have only one or the other, what kind of demo would you want, Single or multiplayer?
GRAW 2 Marketplace Demo "Coming Soon?" originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 23 Jan 2007 12:30:00 EST. Not due to the luscious content it held, oh no, but because the download cost a whopping 1200 Microsoft Points! But today Ubisoft announced that the Chapter 2 expansion pack has been discounted to a more reasonable 600 Microsoft Points. Go download the expansion pack for the new uber low price and if you already purchased it for 1200 ... that kind of sucks. Maybe Ubisoft will be nice next time and not gouge their loyal fans who ate up the content right away.
Take a look at the whole list of them, notice anything a little weird? If you look closely you'll notice that there are achievements that award you Gamerscore points listed at 2, 8, 16, 24, 28 and 32. We've never seen any games offer such odd Gamerscore point totals, usually they are in increments of five, never being as odd as these. Are we missing something here or are there other games out with such odd Gamerscore point totals attached to achievements? Microsoft, don't let them do this to our nice rounded multiples of five ... it's just not right.
Wait ... what's up with GRAW's achievements? originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Dec 2006 04:00:00 EST. Ubisoft did not give specific reasons for the setbacks.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is now set to fill the fourth fiscal quarter gap (January-March 2007), meaning, for better or worse, the sequel to this year's hit will be developed and released in roughly a year's time. Despite critical and consumer acclaim, the original GRAW had some glaring flaws that should not be ignored the second time around -- laughable (and often frustrating) A.I. being the most obvious. At least GRAW2 will be up against some genuine next-gen competition when it hits the market.

[Thanks, Indy; Via Digital Battle]
Assassin's Creed & BIA slip, GRAW2 must satisfy originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Oct 2006 18:55:00 EST. This information was contained in Ubisoft's quarterly earnings report, along with the announcement of a sequel to the massively popular Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. There is some more good news here, too. GRAW 2 is apparently set to release in the first half of 2007. The delay of Assassin's Creed is upsetting to be sure, but GRAW 2 makes a damned fine replacement. Still, we're very excited to see Assassin's Creed and we hope that it comes out sooner rather than later.

[Via Xboxic]
Assassin's Creed, BIA pushed back, GRAW2 coming originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 24 Oct 2006 15:30:00 EST. Nice idea though. While we're talking fantasy bundles, why not throw in Oblivion and a 12 month subscription to XBL?
Others are pretty easy. However, there are some that are too easy or too hard. And of course there are those that are just stupid (here's looking at you Kong). GamersReports has taken our distaste for crappy achievements and combined them with our love of easily digestible lists of information. The product of this peanut butter/chocolate creation? A top ten list of the worst achievements on the Xbox 360, of course! Even better, Joystiq went to the trouble of recreating this list, which we will delicately lift for our own personal gain. It's the American way. Behold:

Mini-Games (Enter the Mini-Games mode); Madden 2007

Pyromaniac (Jack used fire to scare off enemies and get out of harm's way); King Kong

The Graduate (Earn the highest score on every drill in Training Mode); Rockstar Table Tennis

Tactical Instructor (Top marks in every Story Mode mission); Chromehounds

Play Some Online (Compete in each of the online game modes at least once); Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2006

Food Bank; Feeding Frenzy

Game Master (Finish the entire game without continuing while using default settings); Smash TV

Complete 99 Stages (standard mode); Bomberman: Act Zero

Transmissionary (Answer all calls from Otis); Dead Rising

World Champion (Multiplayer: Climb to the top of the universal leaderboard); GRAW

Do you agree with this list? Any others you'd care to throw up there?

[Via Joystiq]
Top 10 awful achievements originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Sep 2006 09:30:00 EST. The results of last Sunday's GRAW poll are in. A full 26% percent of those polled have already downloaded the new GRAW content. While a majority of those players seem to be happy with the purchase, just over a quarter feel that the content wasn't worth the money. Comparing those who've already purchased it with those who'd only get it for free, it's pretty close with 575 votes and 509 votes respectively.

Looking at the overall results, it seems that the sweetspot for content downloads is somewhere between free and $5 US. Still, a quarter of GRAW players are willing to shell out 15 bucks, and another third are willing to pay 5 or 10. That means 60% of those polled are willing to pay something. That's a pretty clear message for would be content providers.

Remember folks, you vote with your dollars...er...points. Judging by these results, Ubisoft didn't quite hit the nail on the head, but they made out pretty well.
Some of you may have noticed the rather vocal response to the news that new Ghost Recon content costs 1200 points. Most responses went to the tune of "Kiss my ass." Some have bitched and moaned, others gladly opened their wallets, and one person actually burst into flames. So, now that the content has hit, bringing with it the first signs of the apocalypse, the question is: did you get it? We'll take a look at these numbers next week.

That low, droning whine you hear is the predictable response to the price of the Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter's Chapter 2 Expansion pack, now available for download on Marketplace. Here's what you get for 1200 MS Points:

Continuation of the multiplayer Co-op campaign with 4 all-new missions in Chapter 2

8 revisited, relit multiplayer Adversarial maps

2 all-new game types with 1 new game mode - Team Battle

2 new camouflage patterns

4 new character customization faces

5 new weapons

Holy crap! 1200 MS Points! That's 171.75 Pesos, 576.453 Thai Baht or $15 American Dollars, the most expensive downloadable content we've seen so far. I think your level of acceptance/disgust with Ubisoft's Ghost gouging depends on whether you convince yourself this content is a true expansion pack ( the kind you used to pay $20 or $30 on an old-fashioned disc) or glorified horse armour. Team Xbox's hands-on will help you make up your mind. Of course, some people over at Major Nelson's complaint repository already have. Sample quote:

"1200 MS Points? Kiss my ass."

How many people will be shelling out for this relatively expensive expansion? Also, can somebody tell me what the PC people are getting for free?

The much-anticipated downloadable content for Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is finally here. Dubbed Chapter 2, this 724Mb download promises new weapons, new game types, and new missions, all for the low, low price of 1200 Microsoft points ...

... wait, 1200 Microsoft points? That's $15 in the US! That means a fully-loaded Xbox 360 version of GRAW is going to run you $75. Granted, that $75 nets you one of the best looking next-gen games along with an absolute crapload of downloadable content. Check out Team Xbox's hands-on to see what your $15 nets you or read this concise list and start making assumptions over whether or not it's worth it:

Continuation of the multiplayer Co-op campaign with 4 all-new missions in Chapter 2

8 revisited, relit multiplayer Adversarial maps

2 all-new game types with 1 new game mode - Team Battle

2 new camouflage patterns

4 new character customization faces

5 new weapons

Do you live in Chile? Then you're in luck my friend! The curvy white box hit store shelves in Chile last week, inspiring these ladies to impersonate protagonists from mediocre launch titles. Just for a moment, recall how disappointed you were when you played Perfect Dark Zero for the first time. Let that sink in for a second. That is what it's like to be a 360 fan in Chile right now. At least they have access to the best launch title, right?

Xboxyde has scored a handful of screenshots from the upcoming GRAW XBL content. The screens feature some of the new co-op campaign maps as well as some new equipment. The content will be released later this month and features "12 additional maps designed for Live multiplayer play, four new missions that extend the co-op campaign through Nicaragua, new game types (Team Blind Siege and Team Battle), more camouflage customisation options and five new weapons." Xboxyde also mentions that they are accepting questions for an upcoming interview with the GRAW team. If you have any burning questions for the team, you may submit them in the Xboxyde forum. If anything else is burning, I'd suggest you see a doctor.
