Los Santos, a sub-urbane simulacrum of the auto-dependent Los Angeles, is the foundation for Rockstar North's next big heist, <em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em>. The studio's job is to create, not acquire: build the biggest playground yet, and fill it with more, more, more things to do.<br />
<br />
The first thing we do is jump out of a helicopter. The mountains and snaking rivers below almost obscure the fact that there's a city just around the corner. Serenity is a rare quality in Grand Theft Auto, though I know the parachute is precursor to an inevitable descent into mayhem.<br />
<br />
Later, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/gta-5-grand-theft-auto-5-trailer-april/">protagonists Trevor, Michael and Franklin</a> clear out an armored van in the dead of night, having blocked its route with a stolen truck. The police start arriving en masse, in waves, and Rockstar shows me the ease at which you can switch between your criminals. While Michael and wheelman Franklin are pinned down behind cover, you can leap into a manic Trevor and snipe from a distant tower.<br />
<br />
The elaborate shootout demonstrates refinements in motion, combat and cover, Rockstar says. The driving is supposed to feel better too - another sign of the expected trajectory of improvement of the Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar North aims to improve its monster of a game at every known level, from motion-captured walking animations and gunplay, ambiance, writing, and story-driven activities outside of the main plot. I haven't seen enough (or played any) to say how it all fits together, but there are three alterations that could put <em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em> on your radar, even if, like many of Rockstar's subjects, you've been trying to elude a dour life.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/02/three-points-of-view-on-grand-theft-auto-5/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Three points of view on Grand Theft Auto 5</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/02/three-points-of-view-on-grand-theft-auto-5/">Three points of view on Grand Theft Auto 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 May 2013 15:15:00 EST. We've posted a new set of <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/grand-theft-auto-5"><em>Grand Theft Auto 5 </em></a>screenshots as prelude to some preview coverage later today. This batch shows off the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/30/gta-5-grand-theft-auto-5-trailer-april/">trio of protagonists</a> in the midst of a heist, as well as some underwater, likely more legal R&amp;R.<br />

As you can see in full below the break, it does not stray far from the style introduced during the series' PlayStation 2 days.<br /><br />The art unsurprisingly features the three main protagonists of the game, with Franklin holding the handgun at the bottom, Trevor holding the slightly larger weapon, and Michael taking to the water. Also typical to GTA's style, in the hands of the woman on the left we can see a rather familiar-looking device...<br /><br /><em>Grand Theft Auto </em>5 rides onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/grand-theft-auto-5-release-date-september-17/">September 17</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/grand-theft-auto-5-sticks-with-tried-and-true-box-art/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Grand Theft Auto 5 sticks with tried-and-true box art</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/02/grand-theft-auto-5-sticks-with-tried-and-true-box-art/">Grand Theft Auto 5 sticks with tried-and-true box art</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 02 Apr 2013 09:30:00 EST. Current-gen budgets have had quoted with ranges between <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/08/ken-levine-next-project-will-cost-a-fair-amount-of-money/">$15 million for <em>BioShock</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/09/god-of-war-3-has-44-million-dollar-budget/">$44 million for <em>God of War 3</em></a>, but Take-Two isn't planning for the next-gen of consoles - expected later this year - to be wildly different from current costs.<br /><br />"We don't have any reason to believe our development budget will change significantly," said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick on a financial call today. "If anything, we've become, group wide, much tighter in how we spend our money. It has been the challenge and we've been very focused on it. We can't say specifically, but, no, we don't expect to see a meaningful change in what it costs us to release these top quality products."<br /><br />Then again, it's hard to put next-gen budgets into perspective when you're the publisher of <em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em>. If the game's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/31/grand-theft-auto-5-release-date-september-17/">launch on September 17</a> incurs anything like <em>Grand Theft Auto 4</em> or <em>Red Dead Redemption</em>'s marketing, you'll have to take a trip to the Andes to avoid it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/05/take-two-doesnt-expect-its-budgets-to-grow-significantly-with-n/">Take-Two doesn't expect its budgets to grow significantly with next-gen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Feb 2013 18:30:00 EST. At least that's what Rockstar is telling its fans:<br /><br />"To those of you saying or seeing various conspiracy theories about there being some other ulterior motive for this delay, rest assured that they're all nonsense - literally the only reason we've delayed the release is because we want the game to be as good as it needs to be," Rockstar writes in the comments of its <a href="http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/48591/grand-theft-auto-v-is-coming-9172013.html">launch date announcement</a>.<br /><br />When Rockstar first posted the September release date, it said, "We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time." <em>While we study the weaknesses of your puny human race</em>, we assume is how that originally ended.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/04/rockstar-grand-theft-auto-5-delay-for-quality-purposes-only/">Rockstar: Grand Theft Auto 5 delay for quality purposes only</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 Feb 2013 20:00:00 EST. And an Amazon listing is not absolute proof of the existence of an item. This morning the developer <a href="http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/47481/happy-holidays-enjoy.html">posted several screenshots</a> on the company's site for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/grand-theft-auto-5"><em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em></a> to elicit speculation.<br /><br />There's a swimming with sharks shot, along with a dog in the passenger seat of a car. Drive-by pooches confirmed?! There's also a mini submarine picture, as well as a shot featuring a commercial jet, a fighter jet and a blimp. No word yet if these are actual player-controlled vehicles for use in the game, but feel free to dream about that tonight, along with sugar plums dancing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/24/grand-theft-auto-5-sharks-subs-and-pups-be-rollin-screens/">Grand Theft Auto 5 sharks, subs and pups be rollin' screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Dec 2012 13:00:00 EST. Just two days ago <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/26/over-41-000-petition-for-grand-theft-auto-5-pc-port/">the petition had 41,000 signatures</a> and today has exceeded 100,000. The new goal is to get 150,000 people on board.<br /><br />Rockstar has yet to comment on the petition and has only confirmed <em>GTA 5</em> for the Xbox 360 and PS3 so far. Count us among those wishing for a PC port, because <em>GTA IV</em> had some of <a href="http://youtu.be/rt4p9A-U4Ko">the most inventive mods around</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/29/over-100-000-petition-for-pc-port-of-grand-theft-auto-5/">Over 100,000 petition for PC port of Grand Theft Auto 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Nov 2012 14:45:00 EST. Besides, Rockstar isn't about to let any console tell it how to live its life.<br /><br />"Rockstar is a content company, not a hardware company," Houser says. "We use the technology we have to create content, and we try not to let ourselves get beholden to the hardware. The fact that hardware's so mature right now is exactly why we're able to go on to the next level. <em>GTA 4</em> was our first attempt at a new platform and HD visuals, so the first part of development was seriously difficult. "Partly, too, it was because at that point we were deep into the work on the two DLC episodes of <em>GTA IV</em>, and we thought, well, the bits where all the stories cross over is kind of cool, so why don't we just do that in one game? So okay, let's just do multiple characters."<br /><br />The storyline of the game - and remember, GTA games have storylines when you're not just trying to jump motorcycles over buildings or create impressive piles of exploded fire trucks - follows a series of five to six "mega-heists" (the Guardian's term), and three characters who are all involved with the jobs, and with each other.<br /><br />In fact, the protagonists spend more time hanging out together than with other NPCs, Houser said. "If you're playing as Michael and you want to play a game of tennis, you can call up Franklin and ask him. You are actually getting to see the main bulk of the story and also spend time with these people off-mission - that side of it gives it a vibrancy that's a lot stronger than with [<em>Grand Theft Auto 4's</em>] Roman or anyone else."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/12/grand-theft-auto-5s-trio-inspired-by-gta-4-dlc-storyline-crosso/">Grand Theft Auto 5's trio inspired by GTA 4 DLC storyline crossover</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Nov 2012 17:00:00 EST. The move, which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/03/take-two-potentially-opening-new-offices-in-las-vegas/">popped up on radar this past weekend</a>, is made possible by a partnership between the publisher and the state of Nevada, along with the city of Las Vegas.<br /><br />"This move will allow 2K to operate a significantly larger and more effective QA facility as we continue to grow our business across all divisions," said 2K COO David Ismailer.<p> Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman noted, "We have a skilled and talented workforce in Las Vegas that is ideal for companies like Take-Two. I am so thrilled that they will be a part of the downtown community, and I know that their presence will attract other high-tech firms to Las Vegas."<br /> <br /> Obviously, Take-Two made the move for some tax breaks. The publisher is also applying for "Catalyst Funds" from the state. The $10 million Catalyst Fund was created in 2011 and is designed to incentivize "the expansion or relocation of businesses that will quickly result in the creation of high-quality, primary jobs in Nevada."<br /> <br /> Now, before you bring up that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/38-studios"><em>other</em></a> government-financed debacle, let's be clear that there's a huge difference between $10 million and $75 million. Also, it doesn't appear Take-Two is seeking the whole enchilada.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/07/take-two-moving-2k-qa-to-downtown-las-vegas/">Take-Two moving 2K QA to downtown Las Vegas</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Nov 2012 15:30:00 EST. Pictures of what appears to be <a href="http://www.gtagaming.com/news/comments.php?i=2090">a little keychain image viewer have leaked</a>, both revealing that as a pre-order bonus for the game and showing off some locations to be included in Rockstar's latest paean to the West Coast.<br /><br />Looking through the viewfinder on the tiny accessory shows off not only the Zancudo River, but also the Vinewood Hills (a play on Hollywood), the Del Perro Pier (likely Santa Monica's landmark playground), the Vespucci Canals (with a view of downtown), and Grapeseed (a winery area that's likely a tip to California's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napa_County,_California">Napa Valley</a>).<br /><br />Fans have also spotted a poster promoting the game (which you can see after the break below) featuring a woman wearing a Love Fist t-shirt, and a few of the keychain viewers reference an air travel company called "FlyUS", so it appears that <em>GTA</em>'s usual parodic shenanigans are in order. We'll likely hear even more about this one in the next month or so, as Rockstar's promotional machine for the game finally starts kicking into gear.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/grand-theft-auto-5-promotional-materials-in-game-locations-leak/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Grand Theft Auto 5 promotional materials, in-game locations leak out</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/01/grand-theft-auto-5-promotional-materials-in-game-locations-leak/">Grand Theft Auto 5 promotional materials, in-game locations leak out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Nov 2012 18:30:00 EST. At the end of the day, however, the company did have a net loss of $12.5 million, which is still significantly better than the $123.3 loss from the same period last year.<br /><br />The big gun during the quarter was Borderlands 2, which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/31/borderlands-2-5-million-xcom-success/">shipped over 5 million units</a>, along with catalog sales of <em>Grand Theft Auto 4</em> and <em>Red Dead Redemption</em>. Revenue from digital distribution was up 108 percent year-over-year, with "strong digital sales" (i.e. non-retail) mentioned for new releases <em>Borderlands 2</em> and<em> XCOM: Enemy Unknown</em>.<br /><br />With <em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/30/grand-theft-auto-5-spring-2013/">officially given a spring 2013 release window</a>, it should be noted that Take-Two reduced its "financial outlook" for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, removing $600 million in forecasted sales. That <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/take-two-ends-fiscal-12-with-loss-high-13-projection-raises-e/">extra $600 million raised our eyebrows</a> when it appeared in the company's projections at the beginning of the fiscal year, as the math would only really work out if Take-Two was planning <em>GTA 5</em> before April 1, 2013. That is, obviously, no longer the case and the company has reduced its outlook to "reflect its revised assumed release schedule."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/10/31/take-two-revenue-up-155-during-q2-outlook-removes-600-million/">Take-Two revenue up 155% during Q2, outlook removes $600 million following GTA 5 delay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2012 10:00:00 EST. "Although our commitment to quality may occasionally affect near-term results, we believe it's the right approach for maximizing revenue and profits over the long-term."<br /><br />Zelnick later mentioned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bioshock-infinite"><em>BioShock Infinite</em></a>, which was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/bioshock-infinite-delayed/">delayed</a> to February 26, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/grand-theft-auto-5"><em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em></a>, which never had an official release date but was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/31/take-two-investor-call-theme-wheres-grand-theft-auto-5/">widely expected</a> to launch some time in 2012. Naturally!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-8-24-12/">Grand Theft Auto 5 (Business)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-8-24-12/#5232714"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/91-1345814321_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-8-24-12/#5232715"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/101-1345814322_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-8-24-12/#5232716"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/111-1345814323_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-8-24-12/#5232717"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/heli-1345814323_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/24/the-planes-trucks-and-helicopters-of-grand-theft-auto-5/">The planes, trucks, and helicopters of Grand Theft Auto 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Aug 2012 09:14:00 EST. Which is, of course, fine. Especially when those new screens reveal activities like skydiving, tennis, and dirt bike racing.<br /><br />At least, we think that's what's going on in these "Leisure" screens. It's GTA, so it could very well be that all these screens actually depict horrific crimes being perpetrated in these venues, and using these vehicles.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-leisure/">Grand Theft Auto 5 (Leisure)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-leisure/#5227350"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/v-6-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-leisure/#5227351"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/v-7-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-5-leisure/#5227352"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/08/v-8-1280_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/22/enjoy-some-more-grand-theft-auto-5-screens/">Grand Theft Auto 5 screens drop in</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Aug 2012 09:22:00 EST. The images feature three vehicles from the upcoming open-world adventure: a road bicycle, a return of GTA classic sports car "Cheeta," and <em>a damn fighter jet</em> (seen above). Also of note, the Cheeta's license plate has a "San Andreas" wrapper - not a huge surprise <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/03/yes-grand-theft-auto-v-is-set-in-los-santos-and-will-have-multi/">given what we know about <em>GTA5 5</em>'s setting</a>, but neat nonetheless.<br /><br />Not enough to sate your thirst for more <em>GTA 5</em> news? Considering that the next iteration of <em>GTA</em> is set in a faux Los Angeles and that <a href="http://gta.wikia.com/Epsilon_Program">the Epsilon Program was featured</a> in a gags found within <em>GTA: San Andreas</em>, odds are good that we're looking at an early viral campaign for <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/gta-5"><em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em></a>. Good timing, since only yesterday investors were asking why the hype train for <em>GTA 5</em> had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/31/take-two-investor-call-theme-wheres-grand-theft-auto-5/">not yet left the station</a>.<br /><br />What does it tell us about the game? Nothing at all. But investors were wondering where the marketing was, and Take Two appears to have answered right away.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/08/01/grand-theft-auto-5-marketing-kicks-off-with-viral-epsilon-progr/">Grand Theft Auto 5 marketing kicks off with viral 'Epsilon Program' site</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Aug 2012 22:00:00 EST. Whether directly or indirectly, three questions in a row tried to eke out any details about the game, which appears to be part of the publisher's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/take-two-ends-fiscal-12-with-loss-high-13-projection-raises-e/">high revenue projections</a> but still has an official <a href="http://ir.take2games.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=86428&amp;p=irol-newsArticle&amp;ID=1698793&amp;highlight=">"TBA" release date</a>.<br /><br />"Strauss, we've heard nothing, next to nothing, on <em>GTA 5</em> development over the last couple months," said Mike Hickey of National Alliance Securities. "We've seen a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/12/steal-a-glance-at-two-grand-theft-auto-5-screens/">couple screenshots</a>. The game is believed by the street to be implied by your guidance for this fiscal year, but what believability do we have that this game is actually going to come out this year?"<br /><br />CEO Strauss Zelnick responded, "We haven't talked about a release date. So obviously we can't talk about the credibility of a release date that we haven't announced."<br /><br />Pushed further on whether the publisher is receiving consistent updates, the CEO deflected.<br /><br />"We wouldn't talk publicly about the way we communicate with our teams internally," replied Zelnick. "We are blessed to be in business with the Rockstar folks and everyone knows that I feel that way. We have the best creative teams in the business across our company."<br /><br />Though the company did announce today that "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/31/borderlands-2-third-highest-pre-ordered-game-for-take-two-behind/">consumer anticipation is phenomenal</a>" for <em>Borderlands 2</em>, it would still need to hit home runs with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/22/nba-2k13-slotted-for-october-2/">NBA 2K13</a></em>, <em>XCOM: Enemy Unknown</em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/bioshock-infinite-delayed/">BioShock: Infinite</a></em> to hit its forecast.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/31/take-two-investor-call-theme-wheres-grand-theft-auto-5/">Take-Two investor call theme: Where's Grand Theft Auto 5?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 Jul 2012 19:18:00 EST. You mean to tell us that approach works? This is going to change how we do our jobs.<br /><br />Rockstar explained the relative quiet since the trailer: "We don't do this because we 'don't care about our fans' 'don't respect our fans' 'hate GTA fans etc' - precisely the opposite," a company rep stated in the column. "We do it because we want to make sure we only release 100% correct information, and because we want to keep plenty back for the actual game release so there are still lots of surprises when you play it."<br /><br />When Rockstar <em>is</em> ready to show more, there'll probably be a trailer every single day until launch, judging by previous games.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-v-7-12-12/">Grand Theft Auto V (7/12/12)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-v-7-12-12/#5149551"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/gta51_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/grand-theft-auto-v-7-12-12/#5149552"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/07/gta52_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/07/12/steal-a-glance-at-two-grand-theft-auto-5-screens/">Steal a glance at two Grand Theft Auto 5 screens</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 12 Jul 2012 10:15:00 EST. Bhatia projects <em>Grand Theft Auto V</em> will debut during the first three months of 2013 and will pull in $700 million in revenue for Take-Two Interactive with 14 million copies sold over its launch window - though Bhatia didn't say just how long he considers this launch window to be.<br /><br />This $700 million figure is close to the $775 million earned by <em>Modern Warfare 3 </em>in its first five days of launch back in November, which is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/17/activision-modern-warfare-3-sales-reach-775-million-in-five-da/">an entertainment record</a> that has yet to be bested. Take-Two is a publicly traded company, and one fewer gigantic product launch during the holiday season - arguably Take-Two's <em>only</em> holiday product launch, unless you count fall launches of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/borderlands-2"><em>Borderlands 2</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/xcom-enemy-unknown"><em>XCOM: Enemy Unknown</em></a> as "holiday" - means that shareholders will want to know what's up. That worry is reflected in Take-Two's stock price, which took a <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=TTWO">five percent hit</a> since the market opened this morning.<br /><br />But when <em>Infinite</em> got pushed out of the holiday season, it opened the slot up for another high-profile Take-Two-published title: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/grand-theft-auto-5"><em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em></a>. "In our view, the delay opens the window for <em>Grand Theft Auto V</em> to be released in October 2012," Michael Pachter of Webush Securities wrote in an email this morning, echoing a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/rockstar-north-employee-cv-gives-grand-theft-auto-v-an-october-l/">release window leak</a> from earlier this year.<br /><br />In his eyes, <em>Infinite</em> wasn't just delayed to make it "something even more extraordinary," as Ken Levine put it, but because the folks at Rockstar, "notified Take-Two that <em>GTA V</em> would be ready for October." He believes this resulted in Take-Two offering Irrational Games an extra few months to prepare <em>BioShock Infinite</em>. His logic? "The studio [Rockstar Games] has scheduled every prior GTA release during that month (with <em>GTA IV</em> delayed to April 2008, due to bugs in the PS3 version)."<br /><br />Furthermore, Pachter and co. speculate we could hear more about <em>GTA 5</em>'s launch date "as early as May 22" during a scheduled quarterly investor call, or perhaps in a few more weeks at E3 2012. We've yet to hear back from Irrational, Rockstar, or Take-Two on the subject.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/09/wedbush-thinks-grand-theft-auto-5-will-launch-in-october/">Wedbush thinks Grand Theft Auto 5 will launch in October</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 May 2012 14:15:00 EST. Character animator Alex O'Dwyer is an employee at Rockstar North, according to both <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=73340953&amp;authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=8IeI&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=2be6a65a-3e9f-4413-a832-ef56d952f128-0&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=3&amp;goback=%2Efps_PBCK_*1_Alex_O%27Dwyer_*1_*1_*1_*1_*2_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_*1_*51_*1_*51_true_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2&amp;pvs=ps&amp;trk=pp_profile_name_link">his LinkedIn page</a> and <a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B6vwjTe7AMPUN3JQV25idHlRQ3VhY1ZRQURnYl8zQQ/edit?pli=1">his CV</a>, and he seems to think that <em>Grand Theft Auto V</em> will launch this October.<br /><br />As seen in the image above, O'Dwyer's CV puts <em>GTA V</em>'s launch window firmly in the holiday season - not exactly a bizarre concept considering Rockstar's history of launching GTA titles during the holidays (with the exception of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/grand-theft-auto-iv"><em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em></a>, that is). It would also put sufficient time between Rockstar's May launch of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/max-payne-3"><em>Max Payne 3</em></a>, but would <em>totally</em> buck the trend of Rockstar releasing more than one title in any given year. It's worth noting that Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, may not be keen on launching <em>GTA V</em> in the same month as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bioshock-infinite"><em>BioShock Infinite</em></a>.<br /><br />Regardless, we've reached out to Rockstar and O'Dwyer for comment, but, well ... it's Easter. Hopefully we'll hear something soon. For now, we're putting this squarely in the "rumor" column.<br /><br /><strong>Update:</strong> Mr. O'Dwyer's CV was pulled down. We still haven't heard from Rockstar, nor have we heard from Mr. O'Dwyer regarding the date.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/08/rockstar-north-employee-cv-gives-grand-theft-auto-v-an-october-l/">Rockstar North employee CV gives Grand Theft Auto V an October launch window [update: CV pulled]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 08 Apr 2012 12:45:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/14/rumor-ned-luke-is-gta-vs-leading-man/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/11/nedlukeactor.jpg" style="border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
That man above is actor Ned Luke, <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0902623/">whose Internet Movie Database page</a> now lists him as playing a character named Alberto De Silva, whom <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-11-14-internet-sleuths-reckon-theyve-found-grand-theft-auto-5s-lead-actor">fans believe</a> is the gravelly-voiced lead in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/02/gta-5-trailer/">the trailer for <em>Grand Theft Auto 5</em></a>. The connection was also mentioned in <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/jimmytaenaka/status/132699841347334145">a tweet by an actor</a> named Jimmy Taenaka, who says his friend Luke is "the lead voice and profile" in the new Rockstar game. You can also watch <a href="http://www.imdb.com/video/demo_reel/vi174889497/">Luke's demo reel on IMDb</a>, and while we're not experts in bioacoustics, he certainly looks and sounds like our guy.<br />
<br />
Rockstar hasn't yet confirmed the voice or portrayal, and while a Twitter account attributed to Luke appeared for a short time (probably a hoax), it's since been deleted completely. It's not clear why all the secrecy, however; if Luke is our guy, he seems like a fine choice for a Dad looking to make good on a life of crime.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/15/rumor-ned-luke-is-gta-vs-leading-man/">Rumor: Ned Luke is GTA V's leading man</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Nov 2011 07:30:00 EST.
