Yahoo's <a href="http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/australian-man-breaks-gaming-marathon-record-122-hours-201104147.html">Plugged In</a> reports the previous record was set by a Canadian pair playing the Resistance series for 120 hours.<br /><br />Kaya was in good company with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-black-ops-2"><em>Call of Duty Black Ops 2</em></a>, which set sales records when it earned $500 million on its first day at retail.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/21/guinness-record-of-longest-game-session-set-at-135-hours-with-bl/">Guinness record of longest game session set at 135 hours with Black Ops 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Nov 2012 22:00:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/07/star-wars-the-old-republic-wins-guinness-award-for-most-voice-a/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/01/starwarsguinnessvoiceover.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 0px;" /></a></div>
<a href="http://joystiq.com/game/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> might not have picked up too many "Game of the Year" awards in 2011 (due mostly to the fact that it was out for about 10 days when the year ended), but that hasn't stopped EA from getting some awards declared for the game anyway.<br />
<br />
First, the company declared its own title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/star-wars-the-old-republic-hits-a-million-players-28-million-h/">the "fastest-growing subscription MMO" around</a>, and now it's worked with the Guinness Book of World Records to <a href="http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2012/1/star-wars-the-old-republic-recognised-guinness-world-records-2012-gamers-edition/">declare <em>SW:TOR</em> the "Largest Entertainment Voice Over Project"</a> of all time. The 2012 Gamers' Edition of the famous world record publication has a whole guide to <em>Star Wars</em> video games over the years, and also heralds BioWare's <em>Knights of the Old Republic</em> as the best game with Jedis ever made.<br />
<br />
True, <em>KotOR</em> is great, and the MMO has over 200,000 lines of quest dialogue spoken by a couple hundred voice actors, so Guinness hasn't missed its mark. But it sure seems like EA's fishing a little far out in the bay for compliments on this one. How about giving us a call when the game is ready to win the Guinness award <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/02/bioware-mac-version-of-star-wars-the-old-republic-is-something/">for most polished Mac release</a>, guys?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/01/07/star-wars-the-old-republic-wins-guinness-award-for-most-voice-a/">Star Wars: The Old Republic wins Guinness award for most voice acting</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Jan 2012 04:00:00 EST. Even if you've never joined the prodigious ranks of the Xbox Live Gold subscribers, or whether you've simply allowed your honorable title to fall by the wayside, you can <a href="http://majornelson.com/2011/04/21/free-xbox-live-weekend-and-be-a-part-of-a-world-record-attempt/">get a temporary pass</a> to the Gold Zone this weekend. From today through Monday, free users will find their status upgraded, giving them access to the online multiplayer functionality usually reserved for their premium counterparts.<br />
<br />
Of course, there's no such thing as a free lunch -- Microsoft is asking that folks participating in the freekend help break an extremely specific <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/kinect-sports-dev-seeks-participants-for-guinness-world-records/">Guinness world record</a> using <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/kinect-sports"><em>Kinect Sports</em></a>: "The most people running a virtual 100m dash at one time." That ... that can't be a very large number to beat, can it? Regardless, if you'd like to participate (and grab a free Avatar shirt at the same time), check out the details on <a href="http://www.rare.co.uk/blog/?p=3977#blog">Rare's blog</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/free-xbox-live-gold-this-weekend-help-out-with-a-guinness-world/">Free Xbox Live Gold this weekend, help out with a Guinness world record attempt</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 16:30:00 EST. A group of six Dutch gamers played <em>Red Dead Redemption</em> <a href="http://www.videogamesblogger.com/2010/07/19/dutch-gamers-break-non-stop-gaming-world-record-at-50-hours.htm">for 50 hours straight over the weekend</a>, garnering them recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records. The event took place at a Dixons store in the Netherlands, where <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pridepr/sets/72157624401730375/">six players started out as competitors</a>, but eventually decided to keep playing and get the world record together. All six will receive recognition from Guinness, a $1300 prize and <a href="http://twistdock.info/">a Twistdock connector</a> from the event's sponsor.<br />
<br />
There are two things that make this stand out from your average weekend-long play session. First, we're talking 50 hours for <em>all six gamers</em> with no breaks. While that's definitely been done before (with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/08/09/man-dies-after-50-hour-gaming-marathon/">less than healthy consequences</a>), Guinness was there to put the official stamp on everything. So, until you get them to watch you play <em>Final Fantasy XIII</em> and all of its optional missions all in one sitting, this record will probably stand.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/20/dutch-gamers-break-world-record-by-playing-for-50-hours-straight/">Dutch gamers break world record by playing for 50 hours straight</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 05:00:00 EST. There's been some dispute as to whether <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modern-warfare-2"><em>Modern Warfare 2</em></a> had the biggest first-day sales presence in the entire entertainment industry. Sure, its $401 million launch day revenue topped literally every other piece of entertainment media ever released, but in terms of units sold, it was surpassed by the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Potter_and_the_Deathly_Hallows"><em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows</em></a> book and ticket sales for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Knight_%28film%29"><em>The Dark Knight</em></a>. <br />
<br />
However, in an attempt to clear up any obscurity, the Guinness Book of World Records <a href="http://community.guinnessworldrecords.com/_Call-of-Duty-Modern-Warfare-2-Most-Successful-Entertainment-Launch-of-All-Time/BLOG/2308082/7691.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter">proclaimed</a> that the game had the "Most Successful Entertainment Launch of All-Time." Though we shudder to think that we live in a world where success is measured in the amount of money earned, and not the number of lives a book, movie or game touches, we suppose congratulations are in order. So, congratulations, <em>Modern Warfare 2</em>! Guinness says <em>you did it</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/21/guinness-modern-warfare-2-had-biggest-entertainment-launch-ever/">Guinness: Modern Warfare 2 had biggest entertainment launch ever</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 16:30:00 EST. Yes, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/assassins-creed-2"><em>Assassin's Creed 2</em></a> has been awarded with a Guinness World Record. You might be surprised, however, to learn that it has nothing to do with how good the game is. No, <em>Assassin's Creed 2</em> has been awarded the world record for "being the most cover-featured video game." In other words, it appeared on more magazine covers between April 2009 and April 2010 than any other game. <br />
<br />
According to the press release, <em>Assassin's Creed 2</em> appeared on 127 covers throughout 32 different countries. Said Gaz Deaves, editor of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/04/guinness-world-records-2010-gamers-edition-out-today/"><em>Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition</em></a>, "I'm sure plenty of commentators (including myself) would have predicted another well-known game winning the title instead, and this achievement is even more impressive in view of the other 2009 releases that <em>Assassin's Creed 2</em> was able to beat."<br />
<br />
While it's an impressive feat by any standard -- and one Ubisoft marketing <em>must</em> be proud of -- we have to wonder if the record would hold up to closer scrutiny of games released <em>before</em> 2009. After all, there aren't as many gaming magazines around as there used to be, and a few games -- <em>Street Fighter</em>, <em>Tomb Raider</em> and <em>Mortal Kombat</em> come to mind -- appeared on quite a few magazine covers in the past. <div style="text-align: right;"><small>[Image via <a href="http://timesonline.typepad.com/technology/2010/02/star-trek-world-record-comes-to-london.html">Times Online</a>] </small></div>
While we're certain you <em>well-adjusted lotharios</em> spent your Valentine's Day basking in the adoration of your significant other, 99 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-trek-online"><em>Star Trek Online</em></a> fans spent the day breaking the most unapologetically dorky world record known to mankind: The most costumed Star Trek fans <a href="http://timesonline.typepad.com/technology/2010/02/star-trek-world-record-comes-to-london.html">ever gathered in a single place</a>. We imagine they also broke the "most depressing way to spend a Valentine's Day" record as well, but we don't have any way of empirically proving that.<br />
<br />
No, you know what? We take back that mean thing we just said. 99 people chose to dress up like their favorite Star Trek character, suffered crummy weather to gather on London's Millennium Bridge, and celebrated this thing that they love. Hell, if we'd known Atari representatives were going to be there to distribute free <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/15/star-trek-online-lifetime-12-month-subscription-deals/">lifetime subscriptions</a> to the game, we would've happily helped to bring the grand total of participants into the triple digits.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/star-trek-online-fans-set-nerdiest-world-record-ever/">Star Trek Online fans set nerdiest world record ever</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Feb 2010 18:30:00 EST. What's the longest anyone's spent playing an MMO? You'd know the answers to these and many more questions about the extremes of the video game world if you had a copy of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/07/new-guinness-world-records-gamer-edition-in-january/"><em>Guinness World Records 2010: Gamer's Edition</em></a>. Or if you clicked over to the <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/video-game-bible-returns---guinness-world-recordsr-2010-gamers-edition-80567482.html">press release</a> announcing that the book is out today in the US and will be out January 21 in UK.<br />
<br />
If you'd like <em>more </em>peeks into the book before you decide whether to buy into this celebration of gaming's most excessive numbers (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/28/batman-arkham-asylum-receives-uninspiring-guinness-world-record/">most obvious marketing</a>), Guinness posted some preview pages <a href="http://gamers.guinnessworldrecords.com/">here</a>. And if you want to beat that MMO record, it was 16,799 hours. In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, Italy <a href="http://www.bhpress.co.uk/release.asp?i=1725">set a Guinness world record</a> for "largest number of participants to play in a single <em>Guitar Hero</em> session over a 24-hour period." At the FNAC store, 594 people participated in a single, massive <em>Guitar Hero 5</em> play session coordinated to celebrate the European release of Activision's latest music title. <br /><br />The record was set using <em>Guitar Hero 5</em>'s Party Play mode, which supports drop-in and drop-out gameplay. There's no word on whether any Montagues or Capulets were harmed during the event, but as soon as we hear something, we'll let you know.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/14/italian-gamers-set-new-guinness-world-record-with-guitar-hero-5/">Italian gamers set new Guinness world record with Guitar Hero 5</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 14 Sep 2009 13:30:00 EST. Over 400 cosplayers are expected to gather and break the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/cosplayers-gathering-breaks-guinness-record-where-none-existed/">Guinness record</a> for "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" today at <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2009">GamesCom</a>. We were looking forward to telling you if they broke the <a href="http://www.londonexpo.com/">MCM London</a> record of 376 characters ... but we forgot one little detail: Um, all those people need to be officially counted and that seems to take a <em>really long time</em>.<br /><br />With a couple Guinness representatives on hand, each cosplayer has to write down the name of their character and respective game. Following that, a photo gets taken and then they get to bake in the summer sun -- waiting for everyone else to be counted. We felt really bad for the Tetris pieces! <strike>We'll update when we get the official count.</strike><br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/24/cosplay-record-attempt-fails-at-gamescom-guinness-believes-a-tg/">It failed</a>.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/">GamesCom cosplay (Guinness attempt)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227832"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0557_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227831"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0554_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227830"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0549_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227829"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0562_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-cosplay-guinness-attempt/#2227828"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/08/img_0561_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/22/cosplayer-gathering-at-gamescom-attempts-to-break-guinness-recor/">Cosplayer gathering at GamesCom attempts to break Guinness record</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 22 Aug 2009 10:00:00 EST. Japan recently received its 12th <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pokemon"><em>Pok&eacute;mon</em></a> animated feature in <em>Arceus: To The Conquering of Space-Time. </em>Even before its July 18 release, the film showed that the power of Pokemans is still strong in Japan by shattering records. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93307-Twelfth-Pokemon-Movie-Sets-Guinness-Records">The Escapist</a> reports that pre-sales of tickets were at insane levels, with <span id="intelliTXT">2,384,198 eager movie-goers signing up, enough to net it a Guinness World Record for most advanced sales of an animated feature. <div align="left">Activision's booth yesterday played host to more than just sweaty gamers and <span style="font-style: italic;">DJ Hero</span> videos: <em>Call of Duty 4</em>-developer Infinity Ward was re<em>ward</em>ed with a Guinness World Record for "the most popular online console game" citing the fact that it's been played "been played by over 13 million gamers on Xbox Live since its launch in November 2007." So, you mean to tell us that <span style="font-style: italic;">CoD4</span> took that honor without even including the PlayStation Network community? Dayum! Pic of that certificate after the break. Congrats, IW!<br /></div>

Codemasters' <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fuel">Fuel</a></em> is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/25/producer-paradise-city-a-postage-stamp-compared-to-fuels-size/">big</a>, and while some may argue that size doesn't matter, they're probably just jealous of the open-world racer's immense girth. In fact, the upcoming off-road racing game was recently crowned by Guinness World Records for having the largest playable environment in a console game ever with 5,560 square miles of accessible in-game terrain. <br /><br />To help us wrap our heads around how big that is, the Codies say that's larger than Hong Kong, Singapore, St Lucia and the Isle of Man put together. Let's just hope developer Asobo (pictured) remembers to fill all that space with enough to do, else it's going to be a very long and boring ride. The number of stitches on a baseball. The number of prayer beads strung together to form a mala. The number of minutes in which Desmond had to press that damn button again and <em>again.</em> And, the new Guinness World Record for consecutive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/street-fighter-iv/"><em>Street Figther IV</em></a> wins. What do these seemingly unrelated phenomena have in common? The Number 108 ...<br /> <br />

<br />The UK's Zak Bennett has sealed his inseparable fate to this sacred number by setting the <em>SFIV</em> record at a London launch event last Friday, now confirms Guinness World Records. Initially, Bennett was defeated after only 28 consecutive wins, but even that was enough to break the previous record -- set at a paltry 10 wins. Still, <em>something</em> inspired him to try again. In his second attempt, Bennett would not be defeated for 108 consecutive matches. (Guinness did not confirm, however, just what caliber of opponents Bennett faced during his immaculate run.) Quick! Hideo Kojima's has been in London this week, not just for the signing of pre-release <em>MGS4</em> sleeves <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/02/ps3-fanboy-hideo-kojimas-london-signing/">at HMV Oxford Street</a>, but also to pick up a couple of Guinness World Record certificates. Kojima will be featured in the new Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008 with two achievements to his name. First, for creating <em>Metal Gear Solid 2</em>, the best selling stealth game on the PS2 to date. His second achievement is for inventing stealth games in the first place with <em>Metal Gear Solid 1 </em>on the original PlayStation. Two prestigious awards, indeed. <br /><br />The Guinness World Records: Gamer's Edition 2008 is on shelves now.<br /><br />[Via Press Release]<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/04/hideo-kojima-celebrated-for-inventing-stealth-games/">Hideo Kojima celebrated for inventing stealth games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Jun 2008 16:45:00 EST. That's not too hard to believe -- there were about <em>a million</em> <em>Mega Man</em> games in the main series and various spinoff series before the DS, and the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/06/classic-mega-man-shows-up-in-star-force-2/">DS games</a> have been coming in multiples.<br /><br />What's most amusing about this record is that, according to Capcom's blog, Guinness arrived at it without even considering <em>all</em> the <em>Mega Man </em>games -- basically, they failed to arrive at a full count, and <em>Mega Man</em> <em>still</em> beat other series. They didn't just forget Japan-only releases like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/virtually-overlooked-wily-and-right-no-rockboard-thats-paradise/"><em>Wily &amp; Right no Rockboard</em></a>, either -- <em>Mega Man Soccer</em> failed to make the list, and that was a U.S.-released game starring the original Blue Bomber. No doubt it omits Hi-Tech Expressions' <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXvQQZwKE1I&amp;feature=PlayList&amp;p=AA393FA489946C0F&amp;index=0"><em>Mega Man</em></a> and <em>Mega Man III</em> as well.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/29/its-official-mega-man-is-the-most-milked-series-ever/">It's official: Mega Man is the most milked series ever</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 29 Apr 2008 12:45:00 EST. The <em>Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition</em> succeeded in recording the "The Largest Gathering of Games Characters" (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cosplay">cosplayers</a>) at the Millennium Bridge in London this morning. Considering there was no record before, the gathering of 80 cosplayers beat the former record by a lot. <a href="http://uk.gamespot.com/news/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=26293999">Gamespot UK</a> braved the brisk weather to take photos of the event and even participate.<br /><br />Hopefully the next time <a href="http://gamers.guinnessworldrecords.com/"><em>Guinness</em></a> decides to hold an official gathering they'll give a little more warning and hold it at any video game or cosplay convention where the meager turnout of 80 will be blown away. Might we suggest <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pax">PAX</a> for the next attempt? Oh well, nice first attempt, congrats to all who participated!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/18/cosplayers-gathering-breaks-guinness-record-where-none-existed/">Cosplayer gathering breaks Guinness record (where none existed)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Mar 2008 22:00:00 EST. Folding@home continues to get the attention of the mainstream media. PS3's large network of Cell-enabled PS3 systems has significantly boosted the abilities of Stanford University's research program. So much so, in fact, that the program recently was recognized by the Guinness Records. Over 670,000 unique PS3 users have registered to the Folding@home network, and combined they have achieved the petaflop mark on September 23, 2007. This has placed the program as the most powerful distributed computing network <em>ever</em>.<br />
<p> "To have Folding@home recognized by Guinness World Records as the most powerful distributed computing network ever is a reflection of the extraordinary worldwide participation by gamers and consumers around the world and for that we are very grateful," said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford University and Folding@home project lead. "Without them we would not be able to make the advancements we have made in our studies of several different diseases. But it is clear that none of this would be even remotely possible without the power of PS3, it has increased our research capabilities by leaps and bounds."</p>
<p> "To have PS3 play such a large role in allowing Folding@home to be honored by Guinness World Records is truly incredible," said Masayuki Chatani, Executive Vice President &amp; Chief Technology Officer, Technology Platform, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. "This record is clear evidence of the power of PS3 and the contributions that it is making to the Folding@home network, and more importantly, scientific research."</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/31/folding-home-and-ps3-reach-guinness-records/">Folding@home and PS3 reach Guinness Records</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Oct 2007 12:45:00 EST. Take <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ShaneKim/">Shane Kim</a>, for example. <br /><br />When asked by Newsweek's N'Gai Croal why <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Shadowrun/">Shadowrun</a></em> on the Xbox 360 cost $10 more than the identical PC version, Microsoft Games Studios' corporate vice president could have simply said "because we can." (Remember, folks, before <em>Gears of War</em>, Microsoft was selling their first-party titles for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/08/24/microsoft-first-party-xbox-360-games-to-retail-for-49-99/">old standard</a> of $49.99.)<br /><br />Nay, this wordsmith saw a canvas on which he could be poetic! "[These] price points are our standard pricing for each platform ... This pricing structure is not uncommon in the multiplayer-only first-person shooter genre, as numerous titles have seen success at this price point and gaming model." <br /><br />Do we have an answer as to how Microsoft can justify screwing console owners out of ten dollars? No. Have we witnessed a moment of linguistic triumph? Yes. Really? It seems like anyone could easily beat that record by creating their own game with ridiculous scoring. ("Press 'x' to score eleventy bajillion points, to the power of infinity.") But who are we to criticize?
