Joystiq's updates the Instrument Compatibility Matrix

Now that Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Revolution are all headed our way, Xbox 360 gamers will soon be flooded with new instrument peripherals. This raises the question: which instruments will work with which games? Joystiq has stepped up to the proverbial plate and provided the answer: the Joystiq Instrument Compatibility Matrix 3.0. If you're planning to pick up any of these upcoming music games (and you really should be), consulting this handy chart is a must. It will be updated as new information is released, so be sure to bookmark it for the next time you've got a hankering for a new plastic instrument.

Activision boasts 15 million Guitar Hero song downloads

Not to be outdone by its more innovative brother Rock Band, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith revealed the Guitar Hero franchise has recently surpassed 15 million individual song downloads. The announcement was made during a recent earnings call where Activision also revealed future plans of the Tony Hawk, Call of Duty and James Bond licenses.

Viacom, owner of Harmonix, recently announced Rock Band has reached the 10 million song download mark.

It's notable that the Guitar Hero announcement seems to relate to both Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360) and Guitar Hero III (Xbox 360 and PS3) downloads while the Rock Band announcement appears to be a combination of Xbox 360 and PS3 online sales. While Harmonix and Activision continue their urinating contest over numbers, we'll just assume both are doing well in the content sales department for future reference.

Guitar Hero II gets Indie Label Pack

Odd as it may sound, there's new Guitar Hero II (yes, GHII) content on the Marketplace today and we guess we're going indie. The GHII "Indie Label Pack" features three songs for 500 Microsoft points including "State of Massachusetts" by Dropkick Murphys, "You Should Be Ashamed of Myself" by The Bled and "Memories of the Grove" by Maylene & The Sons of Disaster. Again, this is new content for GHII and not GHIII which makes our head quirk to the side a bit, but we guess that's some hardcore product support. Or maybe the powers that be just want to milk us for every last dime we have. That has to be it, those dirty milkers!

[Thanks, Joe]

EA: Rock Band may face shortages through year's end

Continuing their tradition of sitting in on droning investor earnings report calls (so you don't have to!) Gamasutra noticed EA president John Riccitiello predicting that Rock Band bundles may be tough to come by for a while. "We won't be able to put up enough inventory to meet the demand of this fiscal or calendar year," Riccitiello told the investors, adding that those who don't buy at launch "won't be getting one for Christmas, unless you know someone at one of our retailers."

While Riccitiello could be plausibly accused of simply trying to talk up demand in advance of the Nov. 20 launch -- he did encourage listeners to "get in line outside your favorite retailer, because we've got one hot product" -- we find the idea of shortages very easy to believe given the game's strong pre-order sales. With Guitar Hero III already selling out at retailers nationwide, it looks like the market for rhythm games might just be big enough for two expensive, hard-to-come-by products.

Canada: Get GHII free with Xbox 360 purchase

Fellow Canadians who don't own an Xbox 360 (or are looking for a second) and would like to jam to some Guitar Hero II before the sequel releases next week, please give us your complete and undivided attention. This week at Canadian electronics retailer Future Shop they are offering Guitar Hero II FREE with the purchase of a new Xbox 360 console. This is the same holiday 360 bundle that includes Forza Motorsport 2 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, so it's like getting three games and a console for $399. It's not too shabby of a deal, so maybe you should jump in while the gettings are good.

[Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

GHII gets some heavy DLC tomorrow

Even with Guitar Hero III just month's away, it looks like Activision is still keen to milk its very lucrative downloadable content business. As such, the company has announced a new song pack for Guitar Hero II. Like the previous packs, the new song pack includes three new tracks for you to shred to your heart's content. The song pack includes the following tracks.
Lest you are unfamiliar with the new tracks, let's just say they're a bit on the hard side, especially compared to last month's DLC. According to ScoreHero, the new content will be available tomorrow at 2:00AM (PT) for the still onerous price of 500 MS Points. Now, if Activision would finally release some Fine Young Cannibals, we'd be in business.
