If there's a statistic measuring how well a game sold, you're likely to find <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-play"><em>Wii Play</em></a> lingering in it somewhere. It's not only been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/20/top-five-best-sellers-for-2009-tracked-for-each-console/">the best-selling game of 2009</a>, but also just recently made itself known as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/wii-fit-may-surpass-san-andreas-sales-wii-play-is-top-selling/">the top seller for the last decade</a>. Now, according to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/npd">NPD</a> data (via <a href="http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6246627.html">GameSpot</a>), the software-hardware hybrid has claimed another throne: top-selling non-PC US game <em>ever</em>. <br />
<br />
It's a pretty prestigious list and while no exact figures are listed (save for the bundle's October performance, selling a whopping 11.1 million units in that month alone), the other games listed should give you an indication of just how many homes <em>Wii Play</em> has invaded. Taking second place is <em>Guitar Hero III</em>, the first game to earn <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/activision-guitar-hero-iii-is-first-title-to-generate-sales-of/">$1 billion</a> in revenue, followed by <em>Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas</em>. The others in the top ten are generally expected, including Activision's other <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/13/modern-warfare-2-makes-a-billion-dollars/">$1 billion earner</a>, <em>Modern Warfare 2</em> (notable because, damn, that was fast!), along with a pair of other <em>Call of Duty </em>games. Head over to GameSpot for the full list.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/npd-wii-play-is-best-selling-game-of-all-time-in-the-us/">NPD: Wii Play is best selling 'game' of all time in the US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 14:00:00 EST. According to number crunchers at NPD, game industry sales have given Canadian retail outlets the cold shoulder so far in 2009. Much like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/analysts-us-game-sales-slump-to-continue-until-second-half-of-09/">the region's warmer cousin to the south</a>, sales have slowed through the first quarter, with NPD reporting an 8.5 percent decline in overall sales compared to the same period last year. Interestingly, it isn't games that shoulder the biggest burden of this hit, but hardware, with sales of portables plummeting a dramatic 21 percent during the period. Console sales fared little better, dropping 14.5 percent in sales year-over-year.<br /><br />The dip represents a first for the market since NPD began tracking Canadian sales in 2002. The group points to an overall lack of "blockbuster titles" so far compared to 2008 as a driving reason for the ongoing slump, with the same period in 2007 buffeted on sales of games like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii">Guitar Hero III</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ssbb">Super Smash Bros. Brawl</a></em>. As games like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/resident-evil-5">Resident Evil 5</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-wars">Halo Wars</a></em> are not enough to get more Canadians checking out new platforms, clearly the time is right for a new hockey or moose hunting game to ski in and save the day.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/05/canadian-video-game-sales-dip-for-first-time-since-2002/">Canadian video game sales dip for first time since 2002 </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 May 2009 01:00:00 EST. MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/03/02/wii-software-stats-march-update/">recently posted a breakdown of the amount of playtime</a> users logged during the month of February for various Wii titles using statistics that are readily available on the Nintendo Channel. Most of the results are unsurprising -- the top three spots are currently occupied by <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em>, <em>Guitar Hero III</em> and <em>Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em>, respectively. Those three titles have remained in said spots since September of last year.<br /><br />However, a number of games saw massive usage boosts over the past month -- most notably, the average user's monthly playtime with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Animal%20Crossing%3A%20City%20Folk">Animal Crossing: City Folk</a> </em>increased nearly seven hours, bringing the game to a fifth-place finish for February. Similarly, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=Call%20of%20Duty%3A%20World%20at%20War">Call of Duty: World at War</a></em>'s average playtime increased over five hours, bringing it up to 13th place. Sadly, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ninjabread-man"><em>Ninjabread Man</em></a> didn't place at all -- but that won't stop us from holding out hope for a strong March showing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/februarys-wii-software-usage-smash-bros-still-on-top-animal/">February's Wii software usage: Smash Bros. still on top, Animal Crossing sees boost</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 02 Mar 2009 16:00:00 EST. At the tender age of fourteen, our oafish hamfists could barely handle the simplest daily tasks: Shoe tying, pencil handling, typing and so on. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wkZYBJGaMk&amp;eurl=http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/02/video-14-year-o.html">Danny Johnson</a>, a 14-year-old with such outrageous manual dexterity that we're of the firm belief he's at least two-thirds robot, recently performed a task we thought unthinkable -- <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/05/arts/television/05guit.html?_r=3">he broke 17-year-old Chris Chike's official record</a> on <em>Guitar Hero III</em>'s most difficult song, "Through the Fire and Flames", and he broke it by nearly 100,000 points. Robot.<br /><br />Johnson, who's broken nearly 80 guitar peripherals over the past nine months in pursuit of the record, set a wide margin with strategic Star Power usage, elevating his score to 973,954 (topping Chike's 899,703) during a performance at a Best Buy event with Guinness officiaries in attendance. However, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/06/guitar-herowned-gh3s-hardest-song-rocked-100/">we've seen Chike garner even higher scores</a> without being witnessed by the aforementioned officiaries -- we think it's time for these two <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098663/">Jimmy Woods-esque</a> virtuosos to settle this in a no-holds-barred, winner-take-all guitar duel.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/02/video-14-year-o.html">Game|Life</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/07/14-year-old-breaks-ghiii-fire-and-flames-record-guitars/">14-year-old breaks GHIII 'Fire and Flames' record, guitars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 07 Feb 2009 20:00:00 EST. Activision recently <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/guitar-hero-iii-first-ever-game-to-sell-1-billion/?biz=1">announced</a> that <em>Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock</em> has become the first game ever to reach $1 billion in sales. This comes a little under a year from when the publisher announced that the <em>Guitar Hero</em> franchise had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/guitar-hero-franchise-passes-the-1b-mark/">surpassed the billion dollar mark</a>. Not bad for a series the company picked up for a pittance at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/09/activision-paid-nearly-100-million-for-redoctane/">$100 million in 2006</a>.<br /><br />The success of the franchise isn't just <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/27/activision-blizzard-ceo-questions-rhythm-game-royalties-yet-agai/">good news for the game industry</a>, as Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith has cited Nielson SoundScan data, which claims that artists featured in the <em>Guitar Hero</em> series have seen download sales increase between 15-843%. As for the publisher's financial standing, if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/08/gamestop-holiday-sales-up-22-revenues-hit-2-85-billion/">GameStop's top selling holiday titles are any indication</a>, Activision should enjoy a lucrative quarter headlined by <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-world-tour">Guitar Hero World Tour</a></em>, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/call-of-duty-world-at-war">Call of Duty: World at War</a></em> and that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wrath-of-the-lich-king/">Lich King guy</a> from the <em>World of Warcraft</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/activision-guitar-hero-iii-is-first-title-to-generate-sales-of/">Activision: Guitar Hero III is first title to generate sales of $1 billion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 12:40:00 EST. You may recall <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/guitar-hero-makes-a-billion/">a similar headline</a> from the past, where the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=guitar+hero">Guitar Hero</a> </em>franchise earned over $1 billion. Well, another milestone for Activision comes thanks to the previous title to release in the franchise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock</em></a>. That game alone has generated over $1 billion in sales, making it the first game in history to do so. The news was presented by Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith during a keynote speech at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ces-2009">CES</a>. <br /><br />We're not sure how much an impact the Wii version itself has had, but consider it to be significant. The Wii version of the game has been very popular for quite some time now. Well, up until <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/free-springsteen-tracks-coming-to-world-tour/">World Tour</a> </em>released, anyway.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/guitar-hero-iii-first-game-to-make-1-billion/">Guitar Hero III first game to make $1 billion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 11:47:00 EST. Yikes.]<br /><br />IGN added further confirmation of a December release date for the Wii version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/04/rock-band-2-drum-kit-hides-mystery-port/"><em>Rock Band 2</em></a>, which is no doubt a comfort to many holiday gift-givers who may otherwise have a big hole in their shopping lists. However, IGN's preview states that it's coming out December 22, while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/09/gamestop-says-to-expect-rock-band-2-this-month/">GameStop</a> said December 18. At least we're zeroing in on a specific day!<br /><br />The most awesome news, however, is that IGN tried out the Wii <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/03/nirvana-smashing-pumpkins-eagles-in-latest-world-tour-dlc/">Guitar Hero: World Tour</a> </em>instruments -- and they worked, as did <em>Guitar Hero 3 </em>guitars. They didn't have any <em>Rock Band 2</em> instruments to test with <em>Guitar Hero</em>, unfortunately, but we're <em>thrilled</em> to hear about any interoperability at all. <br /><br />Oh, and if the new video at the top of the post didn't clue you in, <em>there are some new videos.</em><br /><br />[Thanks, face!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/10/rock-band-2-welcomes-guitar-hero-instruments/">Rock Band 2 welcomes Guitar Hero instruments [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 10:00:00 EST. Amazon is continuing their apparent campaign to get rid of overstocked Nyko <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/price-rollback-on-frontman-guitars/">Frontman</a> guitars with a new sale in their "Countdown to Black Friday." The savings are ridiculous. If you don't have a Wii <em>Guitar Hero</em> game and don't mind forgoing the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/dlc-limitations-mean-no-hendrix-for-guitar-hero-world-tour/"><em>World Tour</em></a> full band experience (or putting it off while building up a collection of guitars), you could do a lot worse.<br /><br />If you purchase a copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/07/charlie-daniels-guitar-hero-perverted-my-song/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/23/full-track-list-for-guitar-hero-aerosmith-walks-this-way/"><em>Guitar Hero: Aerosmith</em></a> ($35 each) and add two Frontman guitars ($20 each) to your cart, $20 will be knocked off your order. So you end up with a game and two guitars for just a little more than the normal cost of a retail game.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/20/a-cheap-way-to-get-into-multiplayer-guitar-heroics/">A cheap way to get into multiplayer Guitar Heroics</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Nov 2008 10:57:00 EST. If, for some reason, you suddenly find yourself both in need of an extra Wii <em>Guitar Hero</em> controller and a little light on cash -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/27/guitar-hero-world-tour-a-hit-on-wii/"><em>no idea</em></a> what could put so many people in such a state at this particular time -- you may be interested in today's Amazon Deal of the Day.<br /><br />For $25.98 (just enough to qualify for free shipping!), the retailer is offering the <a href="http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=131">Nyko Frontman</a> guitar controller in either white or yellow. Both include interchangeable pickguards for a bit of customization. Of course, this guitar was originally designed for <em>Guitar Hero III</em>, and consequently does not feature the freaky touch pad business that the newer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/guitar-hero-world-tour-2/877305/"><em>World Tour</em> guitars</a> do. But as a second guitar (or a <em>bass</em>) it should be fine.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/price-rollback-on-frontman-guitars/">Price rollback on Frontman guitars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 17:21:00 EST. If you're looking to get an Xbox 360 this holiday and aren't concerned about having the latest M-rated games, Sam's Club (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wal-mart">Wal-Mart</a>'s warehouse retail chain) has a big ol' bundle available soon. Members will be able to purchase a 60GB Xbox 360, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/lego-indiana-jones"><span style="font-style: italic;">Lego Indiana Jones</span></a>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Kung Fu Panda</span> and <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero III</span></a> (with wireless guitar) for $350. We contacted the company to double check that it wasn't a typo and, sure enough, we were told it was accurate. The bundle should start arriving in November-- there's no specific date for it being in stores, so call ahead.<br /><br />While we're talking Sam's Club, we've also been told all <span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero III</span> bundle prices have been reduced (we've placed details after the break). We were also informed that the store, along with <span id="ctl00_cphDisplay_rptEntries_ctl00_beEntry_lblBody">Wal-Mart, will have a limited edition "dragon" controller (no picture currently available), bundled with a black headset, for $60.</span> We'll keep an eye out for other deals as we approach the holidays.<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Adjusted text for <em>Lego Indy</em> and <em>Kung Fu Panda</em> being offered with the standard system.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/mega-350-xbox-360-holiday-bundle-at-sams-club/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mega $350 Xbox 360 holiday bundle at Sam's Club</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/mega-350-xbox-360-holiday-bundle-at-sams-club/">Mega $350 Xbox 360 holiday bundle at Sam's Club</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 12:16:00 EST. IGN managed to score some new details about the Wii version of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Rock-Band-2/">Rock Band 2</a></em>, and it's nothing but good news for fans of the little white box. First off, cheapskates will be relieved to hear that they won't have to toss the Wii <em>Guitar Hero III</em> controllers they decorated with their favorite As I Lay Dying and Tokio Hotel stickers; they'll be compatible with <em>RB 2</em>. Accordingly, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/Instrument-Compatibility-Matrix/">ICM has been updated</a>.<br /><br />Also, all of the 360/PS3 <em>Rock Band 1</em> DLC will be available for Wii when <em>Rock Band 2</em> drops on the system in December, great news for those who jealously eyed their 360 and PS3-owning friends as they thrashed through Jimmy Buffet's "Volcano."<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/wiis-rock-band-2-has-rb-1-dlc-works-with-gh-iii-controller/">Wii's Rock Band 2 has RB 1 DLC, works with GH III controller</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 12:00:00 EST. With the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/wii-warm-up-tempted-by-rock-band-2-now/"><em>Rock Band 2</em></a> for the Wii approaching, a flood of information about the game is finally making its way to the eyes and ears of would-be rockers. Yesterday, we heard about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/15/rock-band-2-all-rock-band-1-dlc-available-for-wii-online-featu/">all of the awesome DLC</a> we'll have access to and now we've got something for those of you who picked up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/this-might-be-the-best-guitar-hero-iii-player-ever/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> for the Wii.<br /><br />Posting on the Harmonix boards, one of the developers confirmed that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-wii-guitar-hero-controller-first-image/">the guitar used in <em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> for the Wii will be fully compatible with <em>Rock Band 2</em>. So, for those of you who prefer rocking out with a wireless plastic axe, as opposed to the one that comes with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/rock-band-3/718548/full">the full <em>Rock Band </em>bundle</a>, you're in luck.<br /><br />No word has been said about <em>Guitar Hero World Tour</em>'s guitar and <em>Rock Band 2</em>, but seeing as how Harmonix wants to "encourage the interoperability of instruments between platforms," we're thinking it just might be.<br /><br />[Thanks, Chris!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/16/harmonix-your-guitar-hero-iii-guitar-will-work-with-rock-band-2/">Harmonix: Your Guitar Hero III guitar will work with Rock Band 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Oct 2008 11:50:00 EST. As we head into the last stretch of the year, which is synonymous with a glut of titles flooding the market, it's worth seeing what the top titles in 2008 were up to this point. Gamasutra, using data from <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/npd">NPD</a>, has posted the <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3795/2008s_topselling_games_so_far_.php">Top 5 titles for consoles</a> up until August. Don't expect any surprises: <em>Grand Theft Auto IV</em> is in the top spot for PS3 and Xbox 360, while <em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em> is champion on the Wii.<br /><br />The Wii certainly is the most interesting of the lists, with four out of the five SKUs belonging to games with included with some sort of peripheral (<em>Mario Kart, Wii Fit, Wii Play </em>and<em> Guitar Hero III</em>). Gamasutra also estimates that the software sales of the top five Wii titles combined is about 12 million units, nearly double that of the top five on the other consoles (separately). Of course, the year isn't over yet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/23/npd-reveals-top-5-console-games-of-08-so-far/">NPD reveals Top 5 console games of '08 ... so far</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. According to one audio engineer, the best listening experience for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/15/metallica-album-coming-to-guitar-hero-on-day-of-release/">Metallica's new <em>Death Magnetic</em> album</a> may be the one you create for yourself ... in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Guitar-Hero-III/">Guitar Hero III</a></em>. Engineer Ian Shepherd compared the two on his blog, and said that the version from the game has a lot less clipping and more dynamic range.<br /><br />What's the culprit? Shepherd blames the "Loudness Wars," which have engineers sacrificing audio quality in favor of a louder-sounding final product. We blame our mad <em>Guitar Hero</em> skills have somehow, through years of digital instrument manipulation, made us <em>better than Metallica</em>. It's a proud day.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/blog-death-magnetic-sounds-better-in-guitar-hero-173961">Music Radar</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/17/engineer-metallica-mix-better-in-guitar-hero-than-on-cd/">Engineer: Metallica mix better in Guitar Hero than on CD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Sep 2008 10:15:00 EST. Better late than never, right? It's been nine months since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/05/rock-band-guitar-compatibility-patch-on-its-way/">we first talked about</a> the guitar compatibility patch that allows <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> controllers to be used with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band"><em>Rock Band</em></a>. That same patch was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/12/activision-blocking-rock-band-patch-says-harmonix/">blocked by Activision</a> and, we assumed, would never see the light of day again. Now, however, it's finally available. We've tried and tested it and it does exactly what we assumed it would -- allow <em>Rock Band</em> players to play 4-player without having to pay an extortionate amount of money for a second guitar.<br /><br />Not only that, but the patch also includes the music export feature so that all (well, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/04/transfer-all-but-three-songs-from-rock-band-to-rb2-for-5/">most</a>) of your songs from <em>Rock Band</em> will be playable in the upcoming sequel. It costs $5 to export your tunes and takes up 1.52GB of HDD space. Well worth it, in our opinion. <br /><br />[Thanks Levi]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/rock-band-guitar-compatibility-patch-now-live/">Rock Band guitar compatibility &amp; music export patch now live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Sep 2008 09:45:00 EST. The first full downloadable album for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> is finally here; Metallica's latest album, <em>Death Magnetic</em>, will debut on <em>GH III</em> on September 12th, the same day it goes on sale worldwide. Exclusive to <em>Guitar Hero</em> will be two versions of the song <em>Suicide &amp; Redemption</em> featuring extended solos by James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett. The album will also be foward compatible -- all the songs will work in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-world-tour"><em>Guitar Hero: World Tour</em></a> and presumably all the new instruments when it is released in October.<br /><br />Look for the album this Friday, September 12th on the PS Store for $17.99. Beginning this Thursday, junior rockers that prefer PS3 can rip their <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Rock-Band/">Rock Band</a> </em>tracks right to their system in preparation for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-2/"><em>Rock Band 2</em></a>. But, much like Ziggy Stardust, the Sept. 11 patch will be hiding a secret under all the glam: The addition of <em>Guitar Hero III</em> Les Paul controller support. If you've managed to hold out this long from getting a second <em>RB </em>guitar, your patience has finally been rewarded.<br /><br />You'll also be happy to hear that Harmonix is hammering out a fix for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/05/ps3-rock-band-pax-pack-not-working/">busted PAX Pack</a>, which will also be included with the export patch. Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got to go update the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/joystiqs-instrument-compatibility-matrix-v3-0/">Instrument Matrix</a> ... again.<br /><br />[Thanks, Chris]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/08/guitar-hero-iii-les-paul-support-pax-pack-fix-coming-to-ps3-roc/">Guitar Hero III Les Paul support, PAX pack fix coming to PS3 Rock Band Thursday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Sep 2008 09:40:00 EST. Well, this should make the patented Joystiq <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/joystiqs-instrument-compatibility-matrix-v3-0/">Instrument Compatibility Matrix</a> a bit easier to memorize. Straight from our special Leipzig correspondent Jem Alexander, Activision says that If you play <em>Guitar Hero World Tour</em> on PS2, PS3 or 360, your instrument is going to work. Whether it be from <em>Rock Band</em>, <em>Rock Band 2</em> or whatever, it works with <em>Guitar Hero World Tour</em>.<br /><br />Now, what does this mean for the Wii version of the game? We have absolutely no idea. But hey, what are you complaining about: It's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/miis-used-in-guitar-hero-world-tour-on-wii/">got Miis in it</a>! British power metal squealers DragonForce will debut a new and inevitably over-the-top single in a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii">Guitar Hero III</a> </em>track pack later this week. Taken from their new album, Ultra Beatdown, "Heroes of Our Time" will no doubt challenge serious shredders with a never-ending string of shifting notes and finger-knot solos when it arrives on Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Store on August 21.<br /><br />The <em>DragonForce Track Pack</em> will also provide two other overwrought songs, namely "Revolution Deathsquad" and "Operation Ground and Pound," from the album dubbed Inhuman Rampage. Expect this one to go for the usual 500 MS Points ($6.25).<br /><br />[Via press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/20/dragonforce-to-debut-new-single-in-guitar-hero-iii-track-pack/">DragonForce to debut new single in Guitar Hero III track pack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Aug 2008 02:00:00 EST. Another <em>Guitar Hero III</em> track pack is ready to be released this week. the Dragonforce track pack will include three tracks from the English speed metal band, including "Heroes Of Our Time," the debut single from their upcoming album "Ultra Beatdown." The other two tracks are "Revolution Deathsquad" and "Operation Ground Pound," both from their third album "Inhuman Rampage." The track pack will be released worldwide on August 21st.<br /><br />Dragonforce fans will no doubt be ecstatic at the idea of not only playing three more of their songs on <em>Guitar Hero III</em>, but also shredding along to "Heroes Of Our Time" before the album is even released. For non-Dragonforce fans, this is probably only a worthwhile purchase if you're in need of a hardcore <em>Guitar Hero III</em> challenge. We just hope they're a bit easier than "Through The Fire And The Flames."<br /><br />[Via Press Release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/dragonforce-guitar-hero-iii-track-pack-available-this-week/">Dragonforce Guitar Hero III track pack available this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Aug 2008 11:00:00 EST. Rhythm games have certainly been keeping the tempo up for financial growth in the industry. <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/music-video-games-account-for-32-of-industry-growth-in-08/?biz=1">GameDaily</a> notes UBS analyst Ben Schachter's report, showing "music-themed games" have made up 15% of software sales year-to-date and 32% year-over-year growth so far.<br /><br />The <em>Guitar Hero</em> franchise is already up 82% this year, with <em>Guitar Hero: On Tour</em> taking in $15 million in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/14/july-npd-everyone-sees-red-nintendo-still-on-top/">July alone</a>. Meanwhile, <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band"><em>Rock Band</em></a>, across all platforms, took in $47 million in July ... and that doesn't even count any DLC sales. Unless the rhythm game bubble bursts in the next few months, <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-world-tour">GH: World Tour</a></em> and <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-2">Rock Band 2</a></em> sales -- along with their respective DLC sales -- could make up a significant portion of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/21/gamedailys-biggest-story-of-07-record-shattering-game-sales/">another record-breaking year</a> for the industry.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/18/rhythm-games-grow-industry-by-32-in-08/">Rhythm games grow industry by 32% in '08</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Aug 2008 16:15:00 EST. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick finds comments made by Warner Music -- saying it should be <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/07/warner-music-wants-more-money-for-licensed-songs/">paid more for the use of its music</a> in games like <em>Guitar Hero --</em> a little "one-sided." <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/cb6e2106-6a23-11dd-83e8-0000779fd18c.html?nclick_check=1">The Financial Times</a> reports that the Blizzavision chief thinks comments made by Warner Music's Edgar Bronfman don't take into account the "capital and resources" required to turn the song into something "fun to play."<br /><br />With the music industry <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/03/uk-retail-game-sales-surpass-music-industry/">taking a backseat</a> to the games industry, it's not surprising to find record execs trying to figure out a way to squeeze more money out of a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/guitar-hero-franchise-passes-the-1b-mark/">billion-dollar franchise</a>. The thing is, though, that Activision's merger with Vivendi Games, connects it to Vivendi Universal, which owns Universal Music, the "world's largest music publisher." At the end of the day, Kotick can snap his fingers and never talk to Warner Music again, all the while <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/activision-enjoyed-2-9-billion-in-sales-last-year/">squeezing every last dollar</a> out of the <em>Guitar Hero</em> franchise until it stops being the soup du jour.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/15/actilizzard-ceo-finds-warner-musics-logic-on-music-licensing-o/">Actilizzard CEO finds Warner Music's logic on music licensing 'one-sided'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 11:00:00 EST. But we've always believed that one should make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold. The new DLC is called the "Interscope Track Pack" which we're labeling as "newish" DLC only because the three tracks were previously made available to those who purchased the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/21/gh-iii-soundtrack-unlocks-three-game-tracks/"><em>Guitar Hero III </em>album</a>. Now, come this Thursday, the three <em>GHIII</em> tracks by Flyleaf, AFI and Marilyn Manson can be purchased for presumably 500 Microsoft points. Presumably, because that's what all the other <em>GHIII </em>track packs sell for and no pricing details have been announced for this latest track pack. Press release after the break, enjoy.<br />

Activision has announced yet more downloadable content for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> today. Partnering with Interscope Records, three new tracks will be made available to download this Thursday, August 7th. The songs in question are Flyleaf's "Tina," AFI's "Carcinogen Crush" and a remix of Marilyn Manson's "Putting Holes In Happiness". This is the same song pack that was made available to those who bought the <em>Guitar Hero III </em>soundtrack CD but this time, we assume you have to pay for it. If you're fans of these tracks, then no doubt this is all good news. If not, go play some more <em>Rock Band</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/guitar-hero-iii-interscope-track-pack-available-this-week/">Guitar Hero III Interscope track pack available this week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Aug 2008 16:30:00 EST. Honestly, with a new, four-instrument <em>Guitar Hero</em> game just around the corner, we're not exactly sure why you'd sink one more penny into DLC for <em>Guitar Hero III</em>. That is, of course, unless you're so obsessed with the guitar that you think the inclusion of drum and vocals sullies the very name of <em>Guitar Hero</em>. If that describes you, then you may just find today's offer pretty tantalizing.<br /><br />As you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/virtuoso-mission-satriana-vai-tracks-hitting-guitar-hero-iii/">may remember</a>, the Virtuoso Track Pack includes "Surfing with the Alien" as performed by Joe Satriani, "For the Love of God" as performed by Steve Vai and "Soothsayer" as performed by Buckethead. And, as we guessed, you can get the whole lot for 500 points.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/25/guitar-hero-iii-virtuoso-track-pack-now-available/">Guitar Hero III 'Virtuoso Track Pack' now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Jul 2008 10:55:00 EST. Their music is extremely difficult to play in <em>Guitar Hero</em> and 2. They have a hell of a talent for naming songs. Rule 2 has been proven once again with a downloadable track pack coming from the band to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Guitar-Hero-III/">Guitar Hero III</a></em> on August 21.<br /><br />The track pack will include "'Heroes Of Our Time' (rad!) the first single from the new album <em>Ultra Beatdown</em> (also rad!) as well as <em>Inhuman Rampage</em> (totally rad!) classics 'Operation Ground and Pound' (radder!) and 'Revolution Deathsquad' (raddest!)." So, will rule 1 also be confirmed with the new pack? Well, when a song's called 'Revolution Deathsquad,' we're at least hoping to end up with some blisters.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/24/dragonforce-track-pack-coming-to-guitar-hero-iii/">Dragonforce track pack coming to Guitar Hero III</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Jul 2008 13:15:00 EST. The three tracks included are "Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriani, "For the Love of God" by Steve Vai and "Soothsayer" by Buckethead. And early word on the street is that you'll have to be a darn good <em>Guitar Hero</em> virtuoso to master the crazy difficult riffs, hammer ons, pull offs and other guitar skills. Good luck with that.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/24/guitar-hero-iii-virtuoso-tracks-now-available/">Guitar Hero III Virtuoso tracks now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Jul 2008 10:15:00 EST. Looks like Activision is ready for some <em>blood</em> in the battle against <em>Rock Band</em>; after scoring Van Halen and the Eagles as exclusives, they have now secured the lengendary Jimi Hendrix into their lineup for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-world-tour">Guitar Hero: World Tour</a>. Hendrix will be a playable character in the game, and two master tracks have also been confirmed to be in the game, with more tracks coming later as downloadable content:<br />
<ul>
    <li>"Purple Haze (Live)" (recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena)<br /></li>
    <li>"The Wind Cries Mary"</li>
</ul>
In <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Legends of Rock</em></a> news, three songs are set to debut this Thursday on <em>Guitar Hero III</em>. We honestly think the tracklist speaks for itself:<br />
<ul>
    <li>"Surfing with the Alien" by Joe Satriani</li>
    <li>"For the Love of God" by Steve Vai</li>
    <li>"Soothsayer" by Buckethead </li>
</ul>
This "Virtuoso Pack" will be released this Thursday. While no pricing info was provided, we can assume it will be $6.25 like previous 3-track packs.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/22/virtuoso-mission-satriana-vai-tracks-hitting-guitar-hero-iii/">Joystiq</a> and press release]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/satriani-vai-buckethead-headed-for-guitar-hero-iii-hendrix-to/">Satriani, Vai, Buckethead headed for Guitar Hero III, Hendrix to World Tour</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jul 2008 09:00:00 EST. <div align="left">Activision is set to add three new tracks to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock</em></a>'s downloadable setlist. Songs from <em>true</em> guitar heroes Joe Satriani (above) and Steve Vai will be available to download this Thursday, along with another from Buckethead, the guitarist best known to gamers for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-ii"><em>GH2</em></a> track "Jordan" and rock listeners for wearing a KFC bucket on his head while playing. (Though likely <em>not</em> for having worked on the <em>Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie </em>soundtrack.)<br /><br />The DLC - aptly titled "The Virtuoso Pack" - has yet to be priced, but three song <em>GH3</em> sets have historically cost 500 MS points (or $6.25 from the PlayStation Store). Here are the specific tracks, complete with video links for your memory-jogging pleasure:<br />

Whether you don't yet own <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> or just want to pick up another Les Paul guitar, you might find yourself shopping at Circuit City this week. The retailer is selling bundles of the game for the low price of $59.99, which is the same price (and even cheaper, depending on where you find it) as a standalone guitar. <br /><br />If interested, you can either drive yourself over to a brick and mortar store or check out this deal <a href="http://clickserve.cc-dt.com/link/tplclick?lid=41000000013459594&amp;pubid=21000000000031063&amp;Key=777592&amp;redirect=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.circuitcity.com%2Fssm%2FActivision-Guitar-Hero-III-Wireless-Bundle-for-Wii-047875951259%2Fsem%2Frpsm%2Foid%2F187030%2Frpem%2Fccd%2FproductDetail.do">online</a>.
