Activision this morning revealed an incentive for Metallica slash Guitar Hero fans to pick up the forthcoming Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock in the game's first week launch window: the ability to import 39 of the former game's 49 tracks into the latter game for free. Like Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, some of the songs in Guitar Hero: Metallica will be importable into the forthcoming rhythm game release.

After the week is up on October 5, the import will cost 480 MS Points / $4.99 / 600 Wii Points, tying it for first place with Guitar Hero 5 for most expensive import cost. We've broken down the track listing from GH: Metallica that will be available for import into Warriors of Rock (39 of 49 songs) after the break.

Speaking with The Guardian, Paul McCartney describes how Harmonix first started pitching him on the product way back in 2007, using Metallica (presumably one of the band's songs running in an earlier Guitar Hero title) as an example of what could be done with The Beatles: Rock Band.

There were "a couple of grown-ups standing looking very foolish with these little plastic guitars playing to a screen", McCartney says. "And we're going, 'Yeah, all right... It just looks like a really bad band.' They said: 'We really can do a great one with the Beatles, and we'll show you.' So Ringo and I got a bit intrigued."

So, when McCartney says they looked like a really bad band ... is he talking about the people playing or the guys on the screen? Because, yes.

We're having a hard time wrapping our heads around this one, so do us a favor and bear with us while we put our heads down and power through. Microsoft is releasing a wireless microphone this fall meant to be used with "your favorite Xbox 360 music games," a list that includes: Lips, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Rock Band 2, Disney Sing It: High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Lips: Number One Hits, and The Beatles: Rock Band.

We know, we know -- you're asking yourself, "Why would Microsoft release more peripherals? Just to add extra confusion to the Joystiq instrument compatibility matrix?" According to Microsoft, the mics are meant to assist in your living room rockstar efforts, and will retail this fall for an "estimated retail price" of $50. Meanwhile, the promise of Lips mics working in Rock Band 2 has yet to arrive and an asterisk in Microsoft's press release from earlier today indicates that these new mics won't work either without a title update. Does that mean we'll finally see the allowance of Lips' mics in RB2 when these new mics ship in the fall?

The bundle will contain a copy of the game, a wireless guitar controller and the exclusive faceplate which you can see in the image to the right.

By now, ardent followers of the rhythm genre should have more peripherals than they can count, but it doesn't end there. With four new games having just been announced, there'll be plenty more plastic instruments -- and DJ decks -- where that came from.

Didn't you know? The metal music game features built-in support for those uh-huh-they-do-sparkle mics. Neversoft, the current Guitar Hero developer, initially confirmed this compatibility -- which isn't coming to World Tour -- on its Twitter feed last month, but the posting has since been removed. Nevertheless, Guitar Hero: Metallica is the first music game to support the much praised, wireless Lips peripheral, which has been unsuccessfully bundled with a mediocre singing game.

Additionally, Microsoft has tentatively dated that long-ago-promised Rock Band 2 patch for "this summer" and suggested that additional titles supporting its mic will be available later this year. When, surely, we'll be able to purchase a standalone Lips mic. Pretty please?

According to an Activision Blizzard press release, we won't be seeing more Heidi Klum in ads for upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica, as the company has revealed a new advertising campaign focusing on college basketball coaches. In an attempt to capitalize on all of this March Madness hoopla, the new ad features four famous college basketball coaches (from left to right: Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, Bob Knight, and Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski) and their "surprise encounter" with Metallica. As you can tell from the image above, the new ad will continue the Risky Business theme, but includes a surprise ending where we see all all four coaches walking home through the snow, uphill, with no shoes on. We thought we'd pass along a courteous reminder from Activision informing the gaming community that Guitar Hero: Metallica began rocking store shelves today. If you haven't found current full-band simulators to be punishing enough, Metallica promises to deliver with an "Expert +" mode, double kick pedals, and guitar solos capable of turning even the sturdiest fingers into tiny puddles of red goo. If you've got $59.99 lying around (or $49.99 for the Wii version, $39.99 for the PS2), you can simulate "riding the lightning"* with unparalleled accuracy.

*Warning: Riding lightning can lead to unintended health consequences in the groin region, including serious unsightly burns and impotence. Consult your doctor before deciding to mount any arcs of electricity.

Update: The PS2 version isn't actually dropping until Sunday, May 24 -- meaning Activision is effectively tainting two of 2009's Sabbath days with a touch of unholy metal.

Undoubtedly the most exciting Guitar Hero release since the last Guitar Hero release -- but not nearly as exciting as the next Guitar Hero release -- Guitar Hero: Metallica is one seriously heavy metal game. That is Guitar Hero: Metallica. Is it fun? Sure. Is it for non-fans? Eh, maybe. Is there anything remotely new about it apart from the fact that it's totally, completely, fully and thoroughly Metallica? Yes.

In a move to make the game more party-friendly than GHWT from the get-go, Neversoft has thoughtfully unlocked every song on the disc in Quick Play mode; playing through career mode is mainly about unlocking items and the overall Metallica "experience." Which, as we found, starts out by having you play a couple of songs by the metal legends then becoming so inspired that you start your own band (who you play the games non-Metallica songs as).

Note the highlighted name "Lynyrd Skynrd," located in the top left. The band's name is clearly misspelled. The correct spelling is "Lynyrd Skynyrd" -- duh.

Some conspiracists might insist that the error is intentional, enforced by Metallica (take note: "Metallica" is spelled correctly), which secretly despises Skynyrd's musical success and demanded humiliation in the form of a misspelling. Seriously? No, that can't be it. Chalk up this mistake to poor proofing. (On a side note: we're petitioning to have "Lynyrd Skynyrd" introduced into the Scripps National Spelling Bee -- it's a tough one!)

Upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica will feature the likeness of Motörhead frontman, Lemmy, as a playable character, continuing the franchise's tradition of including celebrities in-game. "It's great to be in Guitar Hero with all these famous people and I'm really pleased to be in it with Metallica," Lemmy said. Well, we can say we're glad you're in it, too!

With Guitar Hero: Metallica featuring a variety of non-Metallica tracks (as well as some of the classic Metallica tunes), and now Lemmy, it's going to be hard to ignore this when it hits retail in North America on March 29.

The pre-order bonuses for Guitar Hero: Metallica run the gamut of usefulness when dealing with down payment freebies -- the first (and unquestionably most desirable) of these bonuses we already knew about: Dropping a paper Lincoln on the title at GameStop will net you an extra drum pedal with which to face the game's most punishing percussion solos. A bit further down on the Scale of Practicality is the pre-order bonus for Hollywood Video and GameCrazy: A pair of Guitar Hero: Metallica drumsticks. Not an amazing gift, but it sure beats a keychain.

On the complete opposite side of the aforementioned scale is the gift that Best Buy patrons will bring home: Tattoo sleeves. We can only imagine that they're talking about those fake slip-on things that make it look like you've swapped appendages with Tommy Lee, and not, you know, actual tattoos. We assume that particular consumer electronics retailer has some policy prohibiting in-store decorative body modification.

It looks like we might get our wish: Guitar Hero: Metallica will consist mostly of songs from the band's first five albums, with only eleven post-1991 tracks appearing. Metallica's official site has leaked the full track list, which also contains twenty songs from artists such as Queen, System of a Down, Slayer, Motörhead, and Thin Lizzy. You can view the full line-up past the break.

Also, some less-than-great news: the release of the Wii version is set to lag behind the competition. Whereas the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be ready for March 29, Metallica themselves (or whoever writes on the website pretending to be the band) say we can expect the game "in the Spring, most likely in early May." Sad But True, indeed.

Not wanting to be outed by those tricky Activision execs, Metallica has taken it upon themselves to reveal the entire Guitar Hero: Metallica setlist over on Metallica.com. The list (viewable after the break) is comprised of over 25 Metallica songs and over 20 tracks from other "hand picked" bands. Bands including Alice in Chains, Seger, Judas Priest, SOAD, Skynyrd and Britney Spears. Joking, of course, about Spears' inclusion. Oh, and don't forget about that second drum pedal.

Up until now, we've been uncertain about what tracks would be appearing on Guitar Hero: Metallica -- though the educated guessers among us presumed that it would have quite a few tracks by its titular band. They were correct -- the news section on Metallica's official site recently revealed the 28 tracks the rock outfit would be contributing to the game (PS2 and Wii versions will include three extra songs in lieu of access to the band's Death Magnetic DLC pack), as well as the extra tracks from "some of the bands we admire and even call friends."

The full list is posted after the jump, and features our patented new Bold-O-Vision technology to point out the particular song we can't wait to croon without shame or self restraint in whatever social setting we happen to find ourselves in.

The ESRB just rated Guitar Hero Metallica, and in its synopsis gave away lyrics to four of the songs that would appear in the game. Thanks to Game Informer, we knew about the presence of "Armed and Ready" by MSG, but Destructoid discovered three fresh specimens:
  • "Am I Evil?" by Metallica
  • "Whiplash" by Metallica
  • "Mommy's Little Monster" by Social Distortion
Some of the lyrics that the ESRB pointed out include "sweet and timely whore, take me home" and "We're gathered here to maim and kill." My, they are terribly rock 'n roll, aren't they? Also CONFIRMED: one of the selectable guitarists is "a fantastical succubus with cleavage and panties."

Two is always better than one, which is exactly why Gamestop is offering a second free drum pedal to those who pre-order Guitar Hero: Metallica.

The second pedal comes with a splitter that'll allow hookup to a World Tour drumkit and (truthfully) you'll probably need it. The second pedal will definitely come in handy with all the drum heavy tracks Metallica has in their musical library. Darn Lars and his need to crazily stomp on nearly every Metallica track.

A listing for upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica has popped up on GameStop, along with an interesting bonus for pre-ordering the game. According to the site, the game will include a bonus drum pedal, along with a splitter, which will allow would-be rockers to drum with dual pedals if you order early. You know, just like Lars Ulrich.

The listing is for the Xbox 360 version of the game, but it's a safe bet to expect this for Wii. It's a multiplatform game after all and if one version is going to offer dual pedals, we doubt it would be excluded from the other versions and a bonus exclusive to the Xbox.

Update: Added further clarification that this is a pre-order bonus.

There's a thick cloud of fear hanging over fans of faux-drumming in games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero: World Tour -- fear inspired by the near-impossible rhythms which will need to be kept when Guitar Hero: Metallica hits store shelves. We're not sure how familiar you guys are with the speed with which Mr. Ulrich is capable of producing percussion, but we assure you, his work will be most unpleasant to attempt to mimic.

Thankfully, an uncharacteristically useful pre-order bonus from GameStop will give the game's quick-to-act reservers an extra bass drum pedal and input splitter. This will allow the player to use both pedals to tackle the game's more heel-punishing tracks. It's certainly a better option than splitting your foot down the middle, and training yourself to control both halves independently, which, now that we think about it, would be pretty rock-and-roll.

With 28 Mettalica tracks and plenty of guest artists, it's not a game for lightweights. No, you'll need to be a serious fake musician if you want to hang with the big boys. Heavy metal icons Metallica have let the black cat out of the bag. Guitar Hero: Metallica is coming to North America March 29th for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and the rest of the world sometime in May. The PS2 and Wii versions are coming this Spring, "also most likely in early May," according to the band's website.

For those who need a little reminder, this is Guitar Hero ... with Metallica. Oh, and there's "expert-plus" drums. The game includes 28 songs from the group's discography, as well as tracks from Alice in Chains, the Foo Fighters, Slayer, Machine Head, and Queen (as in Freddie Mercury, not of the Stone Age variety). Once again, GameStop has fuelled release rumors by posting a North American launch date for Guitar Hero: Metallica: March 29 is the date you'll want to circle (lightly, in pencil) on your Lars 2009 calendars.

Though that's obviously not a confirmed date, it is a plausible one. "March 29" is a little too random to be a placeholder date, and is also a Sunday, a popular release day for big-name titles. Even if the franchise has reached the peak of its popularity, we still feel pretty confident about calling Guitar Hero: Metallica "big-name."

Meanwhile, Activision had no qualms about revealing release details for Europe, informing Eurogamer that the game would reach the region in May.

Update: According to Eurogamer, Activision has informed them that GH: Metallica will be releasing in May. Well, in Europe at least.

If online retail listings or internal retail documentation can be trusted, those awaiting Guitar Hero: Metallica's release should circle (with a pencil) March 29th as an important date.

Gamestop.com and an internal Gamestop POS sheet obtained by the Destructoid crew have Metallica's own Guitar Hero edition releasing to all platforms on the last Sunday in March. Traditionally, retailer supplied video game release dates are only 12.4% correct, but we're optimistic on this one. Metallica releasing in March? It sorta makes sense.

Activision's CES keynote should have been titled "Remedial Gaming 101: A History of Gaming." Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith took us through a not-so-brief history of gaming, from Pong to Pac-Man to "even games that used to feature trackballs, and yes, even joysticks." Although, that's not the point when the chap in the photo above fell asleep -- that happened much earlier.

Oddly, Activision didn't manage to fit in a single plug for its upcoming game Prototype, which was apparently left out on the show floor for this one. No banners, no teaser, not even a still. Instead the stage was littered with games from 2008: Call of Duty: World at War, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, Madagascar 2, Quantum of Solace, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and so on. It was deja vu, and we found ourselves literally checking our badges to make sure we weren't at E3 2008. Note to Activision: You've got a captive audience sitting in seats and (mostly) paying attention -- take advantage of 'em!

Last week, Metallica posted the first trailer for Buy Another Guitar Hero: This Time With Metallica Songs Guitar Hero: Metallica on its official site. The quality was dubious but the message was suitably loud and clear: you will "ride the lightning" in 2009. And, by "ride the lightning," we of course mean "press buttons on a plastic guitar and Metallica songs will happen."

Activision-Blizzard, having evidently accepted the game's existence at long last, today released a more watchable version of the teaser. That's what you'll see when you press "play" above. What you won't see is much of the game outside of some in-engine concert footage of the band performing and looking all ... Metallica-ic.

A (mostly) single-band Guitar Hero game focusing on Aerosmith came out this summer. It's being followed up with Guitar Hero: Metallica, which features Metallica and a bunch of other bands that Activision's marketing department thinks people who like Metallica also like.

Given the fairly customizable nature of music games, thanks to DLC (and, to a certain extent, Guitar Hero World Tour's music creation), is there any point to a single-band game like this? Is it in any way preferable to, say, making a bunch of Metallica songs available as Guitar Hero DLC? Harmonix's Beatles game seems to avoid this issue entirely, since the company is apparently making a different (not Rock Band) game around the Beatles' music.

Well, we've certainly been talking about it for awhile now and finally it's made official. Guitar Hero: Metallica has dished out its first trailer and, well, it's definitely something. The trailer promises the band's "fiercest songs," which we hope means "tunes from the first 5 albums." You know, when Metallica was good.

Of course, with this being Metallica and all, we can't embed the video past the break. Lars would cry, or something. So hit up this link to watch it. Oh, and a word of caution: Hetfield looks like a mutant in the game and there's an overabundance of lens flare in the trailer. Enjoy!

So what if the Metallica edition of Guitar Hero still hasn't been officially announced? The band itself has been talking about it all willy-nilly; it's been in Game Informer; there was even a teaser in Guitar Hero World Tour. And now ... well, the trailer is out. Not from its publisher, Activision, but on the band's website.

Perhaps some fine print in the band's contract stipulates that it gets to handle the PR for the game. Perhaps the mere mention of the game is being considered an "exclusive," since it's "unannounced." Perhaps it's time for a press release already.

We all knew it was coming, but now Guitar Hero: Metallica is 100% official. Speaking to USA today, Neversoft's Alan Flores and Metallica's Lars Ulrich and Kirk Hammett discussed the game and some of its features. The story of the game is that players are members of a band that tours with Metallica, covering its songs at different venues. Neversoft decided that the game couldn't work chronologically, as Metallica's early work would be far too difficult at the beginning of the game. Concerning difficulty, Flores says that the game will be "a lot harder" than previous Guitar Hero games, and is aimed squarely at hardcore players. So then, should we just give up now?

The game should arrive early next year, with Ulrich specifically mentioning March.

It's a Christmas miracle! Someone's actually admitting out loud that Guitar Hero: Metallica exists! The band spilled a ton of details to USA Today, including word on the game's difficulty (considerable) and the story, which casts you as a band, inspired by Metallica, following them around the world and playing their songs. It's a strange structure, but the reasoning (the band's early work would have been far too hard, ruling out a chronological approach) seems pretty sound.

We imagine there will be very few of you on the fence, so we have to ask: When Guitar Hero: Metallica arrives early next year, will you be picking it up?

The internets are abuzz with rumor word coming from the ScoreHero forums regarding Guitar Hero: Metallica (a game that still isn't officially announced), what unique features it'll offer and a potential listing of the game's tracks.

Supposedly featured in the latest issue of Game Informer are concrete GH: Metallica details, including the reveal of a new "expert plus" drum mode that'll test any drummer's skills with dual kick pedals that'll work with the World Tour drum kit. We're also informed that the game will come with bonus video content, a "drum fill" mode as well as a pop-up video style presentation of Metallica music vids. The worst-kept secret in music games just became ... worse kept? The ScoreHero forums are abuzz over what are, for now, supposedly new details on Guitar Hero: Metallica from the latest issue of Game Informer magazine.

The stand-alone game is said to support GH World Tour's drum kit, including dual kick pedals, which will come into play for a new "expert plus" difficulty. Other features are said to include DVD-style bonus videos and extras; a "drum fill" mode for free-styling with Metallica drum sounds; factoid-laden, Pop-up Video style performance footage; and guitar effects for the included Guitar Hero Tunes mode based on James Hetfield's ESP Truckster guitar and Tom Araya of Slayer's ESP bass. With all the recent chatter about Guitar Hero World Tour, you can be forgiven if Guitar Hero: Metallica slipped from your radar. It's still very much coming, though, and the latest issue of Game Informer has fresh details and the first tracks, from both Metallica themselves and the other acts that will feature.

The game will come with the full suite of World Tour instruments, and Vicarious Visions plans to add "Metallica drum sounds" and a selection of guitar and bass "tones" used by Metallica's James Hetfield and Tom Araya of Slayer to the GH Tunes music studio. There will also be a new, extra-hard drum difficulty for those with a splitter and two kick pedals. Having picked up Guitar Hero games again after a long break, the last thing we personally need is greater difficulty, but freaks experts will appreciate that.

Guitar Hero: Metallica may still not be "officially" announced by Activision, but a tipster sent us a YouTube clip revealing the teaser for the game in Guitar Hero World Tour's "videos" section. Making this situation even more inane is that Metallica's drummer, Lars Ulrich, has been flapping his lips about why the band decided to go exclusive with Guitar Hero (hint: buckets of cash).

The YouTube video gives the game a nebulous release date of 2009, but a financial report from last June showed that the title is expected before March 31, 2009. The clip can be found after the break.

If you thought that 2008's triple-billing of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: On Tour and the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour was, well, a lot of Guitar Hero ... you ain't seen nuthin' yet. Activision-Blizzard revealed at an event for industry analysts that it intends to double the number of Guitar Hero SKUs (not necessarily unique games, just console-specific variations of "core" titles) in 2009. The goal is to triple them in 2010. Whammy bar!

Considering that we had two console Guitar Hero titles this year, that would potentially mean four in 2009 (one being Guitar Hero: Metallica) and six in 2010. That's not even counting handhelds. So ... are you ready to rock, a lot? Or is this all just way too much noise? Let us know in comments.
