You may recall a similar headline from the past, where the Guitar Hero franchise earned over $1 billion. Well, another milestone for Activision comes thanks to the previous title to release in the franchise, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. That game alone has generated over $1 billion in sales, making it the first game in history to do so. The news was presented by Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith during a keynote speech at CES.

We're not sure how much an impact the Wii version itself has had, but consider it to be significant. The Wii version of the game has been very popular for quite some time now. Well, up until World Tour released, anyway.

What's a good way to get folks into your hotel? We have no clue, what with being a game blog and all, but it looks like some hotels might have found a good way to get folks in their doors: gaming. We imagine if you have something the people like and want, they'll flock to you. That must be the thinking behind some hotels in the U.S. incorporating some of the most popular games into their repertoire of activities available to patrons. Games such as Wii Sports and Guitar Hero III.

While we can't comment on whether this is a good decision from a business perspective, we can comment that this is a good decision from a customer service perspective. Now top Wii Sports bowlers and fast-fingered freaks in Guitar Hero III need not worry about getting rusty while they're attending that convention in Tuscaloosa.

It may not be the Wii version of the game, but anyone that can throw down in Guitar Hero as good as this kid can is certainly deserving of all the fame and fortune that comes from being featured on Wii Fanboy. The fame of being recognized by avatar-less commenters and the fortune of having 14 people see your video are just some of the small things Wii Fanboy can bring to the table.

All kidding aside, this guy is good. In fact, we wonder what would happen if him and that little kid got together in the same room. It'd like totally cause a rift in the space/time continuum or something.

While many of you wait on the official Les Pauls to hit the open market, third-party solutions from companies like Nyko are likely presenting themselves as increasingly better choices as each new day passes. It's okay, we think they look kind of sweet, too!

Now, there's another option courtesy of CTA Digital. The guitar (pictured) looks like the inside of a ski lodge, to be honest. At least it's a dark shade, as an oak-like finish would've not been all-too-pleasing to the eye, if we may say so.

One problem we've encountered is we can't find it anywhere. We've searched some of the distributors that are listed on CTA's website, but none lead to an actual listing for this guitar. So, we have no idea in regards to price at this moment.

It's something we talk about quite a bit around the offices here and you all no doubt have a somewhat bad taste in your mouth after finally getting the Guitar Hero franchise on a Nintendo console. That is, if you can call it playing. You see, using your feet to play a plastic mock-up of a real instrument is just what you'd expect it to be: pointless and unnecessarily difficult. We wonder why someone would even go through the bother of filming themselves while they do this. On top of that, wouldn't the person want to get a little better at playing monkey-style before they uploaded their video onto the internet for the whole 10 people that read Wii Fanboy every day to see?

Korea is apparently the place to be when it comes to the integration of gaming and television, as the country doesn't have to put up with the insipid mess of G4 like those of us in the United States. Instead, they look at gaming as more of a competitive sport, showcasing contests between gamers (the example here being Guitar Hero). Sounds like win to us (unless we were to go up against this kid), as we all like to brag about our gaming achievements (34 stars in Super Mario Galaxy for this blogger, hells yeah).

While we're not sure how big a slice of the Guitar Hero pie the Wii version has taken, the franchise has generated some serious revenue. In North America alone, the series of games has earned over $1 billion. In fact, the third title even did so well as to be the top title in 2007.

Other data regarding downloaded content is also provided. However, that doesn't really apply to us, as we've been waiting for downloadable content for some time now.

With the Guitar Hero franchise finally hitting a Nintendo platform, we're so excited to see all of the things people are doing. Heck, even our own Mike Sylvester has had some fun with the Wii's Guitar Hero III controller. Now, we see one individual take the PS2 peripheral and reshape it into a turntable.

While not entirely compatible with the game (we can't imagine trying to effectively complete songs on a difficulty higher than medium), we still find the mod to be pretty darn cool. What's next? A Xylophone?

Nyko showed off some new accessories for the Wii and other systems (but most importantly the Wii) at the CES trade show. The company offered some more concrete information about the release of their Wireless Nunchuck, specifying a Q1 2008 release window and $30 price point for this product.

Their other Wii peripheral is something that fills a very important need in the Wii accessory lineup: a standalone Guitar Hero III controller. The Nyko Frontman Wireless Guitar is a wireless (obviously) controller styled after the Fender Telecaster. This guitar should be out in March or April -- a few months and fifty dollars are the only things between you and rocking out with a second player. Unless Activision beats them to the punch with their own standalone guitars, in which case some other amounts of time and money will be required.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (Wii)

For a port of a two-year-old game, RE4: Wii Edition didn't have a whole lot going for it. It had the same extra features as the PS2 port of the game, not-so-updated graphics, and slightly lower reviews than its original iteration -- and yet, somehow, just by changing how the game is controlled, Capcom created an entirely new adventure. When the peculiar controls for the Wii were first announced, this is the type of interactivity that I imagined from the future games for the system -- responsive, accurate, and realistic. The only way they could have made the gunplay feel any more natural would have been to package the game with an actual gun, which you shot at the on-screen zombies. Once.

Oh man, losing to a kid at anything is pretty darn embarrassing, But, to see a kid absolutely master the ridiculously-difficult "Through the Fire and Flames" by DragonForce is like the best and worst thing we've ever seen. It's great because, well ... damn does that kid have game. But, it's bad because we're not sure we could ever do something so awesome in all of our life. The kid scored a frickin' 95% for crying out loud.

We'll tell you what, though. If this kid ever tries drugs, he's doomed.

When eBay seller k_lid found his fifteen-year-old son Isaac smoking marijuana on the patio with two of his "delinquent friends," he did what any respectable parent would do: he calmly removed his son's copy of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock from beneath the Christmas tree, and put it up for sale on eBay, complete with a lengthy description about why it was being auctioned.

With the listing underway, all that was left to do was show the auction page to Isaac, who apparently "was not amused" by the sight of his number one Christmas present going on sale. Funny, that.

But kudos to k_lid, we say. That's a pretty calculating, imaginative punishment, and there's nothing wrong with a bit of tough love. Didn't do us any harm. Apart from the panic attacks. And the nightmares. And the endless twitching.

Irritating instrument exclusion news now, with IGN revealing unpleasant information to those eager to start a fake band in presence of the PlayStation 3. The article notes that the PS3's Guitar Hero III controller, the Les Paul, does not currently function with Rock Band. The Red Octane peripheral is recognized as a controller and works for menu selections, but it does not register as an instrument. Well, that certainly sticks it to the man... where the man is Harmonix's touting of Rock Band as a music "platform."

Giving the developer the benefit of the doubt, one could speculate that this inconsistency will be dealt with in a downloadable patch. After all, the Xbox 360's Les Paul works just fine with the Xbox 360 variant of Rock Band -- this lack of peripheral support would only be rendered worse if it wasn't even consistent across systems. With no standalone Rock Band instruments available until 2008, the only way of completing the PS3 experience as things stand would be to purchase the $180 bundle again (as if finding one wasn't hard enough). Between your best friends and Harmonix, someone's gonna have to do you a favor.

After the NPD group's short-lived hesitation in providing monthly US console sales data spawned many an unhappy emoticon, it comes as a great relief to present October's magnificent results. This is especially true considering that all platforms have ducked out of last month's Halo effect and returned to their familiar positions -- the Wii and DS are back on top and the PlayStation 3 is, well, you know.

GameDaily notes that the industry once again saw over $1 billion dollars leaving wallets at uncanny speeds, placing total sales for the year (through October) at $10.5 billion. At the same time last year, the amount had "just" reached $7 billion.

Anyone who's spent even a little time rocking out to Guitar Hero III has likely noticed the game's heavy-handed approach to product placement, with stages littered with cans of Red Bull and billboards hocking everything from Axe Body Spray to Pontiac. The whole thing feels oppressive and graceless as even the game's underground rock venues are reduced to feeling like props to corporate shilling. And things are likely to get worse before they get better, as Activision today announced that it has inked a deal with Microsoft-owned Massive to provide in-game ads in not only Guitar Hero III, but Tony Hawk's Proving Ground as well.

The two titles have been added to the growing Massive Network advertising collective, which also includes Activision's Transformers adaptation, and will made to include "contextually relevant" dynamic ads. Interestingly, it's unclear if this partnership extends to all versions of the affected (afflicted?) games, or just those for Microsoft's console. What is clear, however, is that as games are now a big business, more and more companies are beginning to get in line for their slice of the money pie, and while game companies and advertisers reap the benefits of this arrangement, gamers are left holding the controller wondering just when their games became interactive commercials.

First, the good news! The Xbox 360's sleek, wireless Gibson Les Paul controller that made its debut with Guitar Hero III has been confirmed by the wonderful folks at Shacknews to be fully compatible with the upcoming PC version of Activision's rhythmic rocker. It's not "officially" supported by develo-porter Aspyr, mind you, but you'll find it works just fine for setting those frets on fire -- all you need is the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver.

The bad news (don't be shocked, we alluded to this in the first paragraph!) is that Guitar Hero III's PC variant, which releases November 12th, already comes packaged with a guitar, namely the Gibson X-plorer which accompanied Guitar Hero II on the Xbox 360. It's uglier, it's wired and simply won't let you play the game from ridiculous and impractical distances! It seems the Gibson Les Paul is only a worthwhile option if you desire a second controller or if you can track down a standalone version of the game. Can't you help out with this, Steam?

Never saw it coming, eh? Well, the game enjoyed 622,580 connections on Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connect service during the week ending November 4th, coming in second only to Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, which had 1,455,526 connections.

OK, so there's good news and there's bad news. The good news is that the Guitar Hero III skills that you've worked so hard to cultivate could actually nab you a big prize: A 2008 Pontiac G5. The bad news: All of the stops in the Pontiac Garage Guitar Hero III tournament will be held ... inside Hot Topics.

Although GHIII is fine and you could probably survive being in Hot Topic, playing Guitar Hero III within the walls of a Hot Topic actual conscripts you into an emo band. It's true: A spectral version of Morrissey appears and eats all but .5 percent of your body fat, tears pre-caked in eyeliner spurt from your eyes and members of Jimmy Eat World chloroform you and force you to play bass. It's a nightmare.

If it's worth the risk to you you can see all the details here. But we think we'll stay at home and put our eyeliner on by ourselves, thank you very much.

Sometimes, it's interesting to compare what's popular in different regions. Of course, release dates come into play, as various parts of the world get games at different times, but there's a surprising amount of crossover when we look at what's big among Wii owners around the world.

Not everything is surprising: Guitar Hero III is shredding most of the competition in the US, Metroid Prime 3 is clinging to a top spot in the UK, and Super Mario Galaxy is muscling out other titles in Japan. But with the sales the various minigame collections are boasting, is it any wonder we've seen so many? Even the lackluster Carnival Games is raking in the money in multiple regions. Wii owners likely heralded the coming of Guitar Hero III as a momentous event that demanded calendars be marked off and days away from work be cleared with bosses, where spiked leather bracelets were removed from hidden drawers and proudly displayed on wrists. It is likely a time when turning the volume up to 10 isn't enough. But, many might have found that the experience has been tainted by the lack of Dolby Pro Logic II.

News first burst on the scene thanks to users over at the official forums for Guitar Hero, where the title's lack of compatibility with Dolby Pro Logic II was reported by several Wii owners. The official response from tech support has been "We are looking in to right now. The time frame is still unknown at the moment we are still looking in to the problem."

Sure, we may go crazy over Harmonix and Electronic Arts' love child Rock Band, but data from IGN's GamerMetrics reminds us that the franchise has a ways to go if it wants to overtake its distant cousin Guitar Hero III.

According to the statistics, there were 22 million page views on IGN for Guitar Hero III-related articles, vs. 10 million for Rock Band (a 120% increase). GHIII was also on almost twice as many wishlists (5,755 vs. 2,928) as its competitor and over six times as many message board posts (25,000 vs. 4,000).

The Guitar Hero series has a lot more going for it right now, including a two-year history of commercially and critically successful titles. Commentary provided with the data notes that Rock Band has "experienced a noticeable surge in both awareness and purchase intent metrics" in the past three months, which bodes well for the game due out November 20. Guitar Hero III is coming next week.

Though we already knew "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" was going to be in Guitar Hero 3 we didn't realize it was going to be the final track (the end boss, if you will). A helpful press release just informed us of the distinction while pointing us to this MP3 file of the now fiddle-free version. Gone is the violin and in its stead is, of course, a guitar - a fast guitar - played by one Mr. Steve Ouimette who, when asked for comment said, "I told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been."

Game Revolution's Nick Tan recently played Guitar Hero III song, Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce, on expert. That website describes it as the hardest in the game, designed to be "unbeatable." And Nick conquered it.

Yes, weeks before you adoring, fake guitar fans get a chance to play, the hardest song has been bested by a player on his fourth attempt. The video of the event is mediocre, and the moment of triumph is anticlimactic. ("Go balloons, go balloons, we need more balloons. ...") But we were still floored watching this face-melting song --and player -- in action.

Electronic Art's Rock Band isn't the only music game to unveil songs today. Activision has announced (via press release) eleven new master tracks for the upcoming Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. American audiences may not recognize many of these songs and artists, as they are more international hits. New songs include:

While navigating the pre-order boxes, one savvy investigator found the box for Guitar Hero III includes two as-of-yet unannounced songs. Introducing The Killers' "When You Were Young" and Santana's "Black Magic Woman," they join the already fairly large roster of songs for the game. While this could be a misprint, common sense argues that these two songs will most definitely be in the final version of the game.

Of course, with the recent inclusion of Bret Michaels in the game, we wonder if Santana will also lend himself as a legend to play with. And, if you've not been paying attention, we've got a full breakdown of the confirmed songs past the break.

At the Guitar Hero III screening at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival today a previously unannounced song was played to the crowd. "She Bangs the Drums" by the Stone Roses is the newest in a long list of excellent tracks featured in the game. According to NME, a very popular music magazine in the UK, the album that "She Bangs the Drums" hails from is consistently voted the number one British album ever.

We're loving the track list for Guitar Hero 3 so far. There's a nice mix of eighties, geek rock and cult classics. All we need now are some decent British indie rock tunes. Click through for the known track list for the game.

The gloves are off folks, after yesterday's revelation that Rock Band and Guitar Hero III would definitely be sharing songs, there was really only one other question that needed answering: what about Metallica? We know Metallica is in Rock Band, but what about Guitar Hero III? That question has been answered and answered well. As it turns out, Guitar Hero III will not only feature Metallica -- the news was slipped during an Activision conference call -- but the song to be featured is "One," and what's more, it's a master track. Metallica fans couldn't ask for much better than that. If the end result of having two competing music games is more awesome tracks for both of them, then we say bring on the competition.

In a conference call where Activision re-tooted their own horn about how much money they made so far this year, they also let it slip that Metallica would be in Guitar Hero III. The song will be One, a master track off of Metallica's ...And Justive for All album. This may sound like old news, but you're probably getting confused with Rock Band also having Metallica. Yes, it is going to be hard to keep track of what games have which songs in this holiday rhythm showdown.

During the conference call Activision also said that Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s was the best-selling game on its first day in Activision history. They also said they are significantly increasing guitar production to meet the expected demand of Guitar Hero III this holiday season.

Yep, we're phoning in our jokes for this post. We're fairly certain every single Guitar Hero and Rock Band joke that can be made already has. Mostly by Joystiq, in fact. Here's the list of newly revealed songs which will be in Guitar Hero III this October:

  • Miss Murder (by AFI)
  • Through Fire and Flames (by Dragonforce)
  • Number of the Beast (by Iron Maiden)
  • 3's and 7's (by Queens of the Stone Age)
  • Suck My Kiss (by Red Hot Chili Peppers)
  • Raining Blood (by Slayer)
  • Reptillia (by The Strokes)
  • Paranoid (as made famous by Black Sabbath)
  • Cities on Flame (as made famous by Blue Oyster Cult)
  • Mississippi Queen (as made famous by Mountain)
  • La Grange (as made famous by ZZ Top)

Here's a tip: Songs that are "by [bandname]" are master tracks and songs that are "made famous by [bandname]" are rerecorded. Not a bad list, so far. Better than Rocks the 80s, by any rate. What songs would you like to see in the game?

Activision has announced more songs due to rock your socks off in Guitar Hero 3. In addition to the four previously revealed to fan community ScoreHero, the following songs were also announced:
We're pretty interested in seeing which tracks will also be found on Guitar Hero competitor Rock Band, from original GH developer Harmonix -- "Mississippi Queen" was previously shown in one pre-E3 video. The full list of announced tracks are listed after the break.

Europeans will get their first chance to play the game on the continent when Activision debuts Guitar Hero III at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival in a couple weeks. Codemasters will also premiere Turning Point and Rise of the Argonauts.

The new Red Octane wireless controllers for Guitar Hero III are pretty sweet, especially now that they are travel and storage friendly. The festival runs August 13-14 and tickets are still available. If you can't make it to Edinburgh, Leipzig is sure to have your chance at Guitar Hero III the following week.

Seen in a new trailer (and just confirmed via a press release Activision sent out), legendary guitarist of Guns N' Roses / Velvet Revolver and hat aficionado Slash will be featured in the upcoming Guitar Hero 3.

According to the press release, the Guns N' Roses track "Welcome to the Jungle" will also be included in the game, as well as an unnamed track from Pearl Jam's Even Flow.
