You may recall <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/21/guitar-hero-makes-a-billion/">a similar headline</a> from the past, where the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=guitar+hero">Guitar Hero</a> </em>franchise earned over $1 billion. Well, another milestone for Activision comes thanks to the previous title to release in the franchise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii"><em>Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock</em></a>. That game alone has generated over $1 billion in sales, making it the first game in history to do so. The news was presented by Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith during a keynote speech at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ces-2009">CES</a>. <br /><br />We're not sure how much an impact the Wii version itself has had, but consider it to be significant. The Wii version of the game has been very popular for quite some time now. Well, up until <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/26/free-springsteen-tracks-coming-to-world-tour/">World Tour</a> </em>released, anyway.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/12/guitar-hero-iii-first-game-to-make-1-billion/">Guitar Hero III first game to make $1 billion</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Jan 2009 11:47:00 EST. Those of you in the market for another guitar for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/friday-video-guitar-hero-world-record-setter/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> will be happy to know that RedOctane has dropped the cost of the wireless Les Paul guitar. Originally fetching a price of $69.99, it is now $10 cheaper.<br /><br />Have you been holding off on picking up an extra guitar until the price dropped? Have you been waiting to get one but just can't find one? Want <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/wii-fanswag-wireless-nunchuk-perfect-shot-and-frontman-guitar/">a free one</a>? <br />What's a good way to get folks into your hotel? We have no clue, what with being a <em>game blog and all</em>, but it looks like some hotels might have found a good way to get folks in their doors: gaming<em>.</em> We imagine if you have something the people like and want, they'll flock to you. That must be the thinking behind some hotels in the U.S. incorporating some of the most popular games into their repertoire of activities available to patrons. Games such as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/28/levine-wii-bowling-is-the-ultimate-gateway-drug/"><em>Wii Sports</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/activision-offering-full-refunds-for-guitar-hero-3/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a>. <br /><br />While we can't comment on whether this is a good decision from a business perspective, we can comment that this is a good decision from a customer service perspective. Now top <em>Wii Sports</em> bowlers and fast-fingered freaks in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/21/friday-video-guitar-hero-world-record-setter/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> need not worry about getting rusty while they're attending that convention in Tuscaloosa.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/31/hotels-offering-wii-sports-guitar-hero-xbox-live-to-guests/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/01/come-for-the-soft-beds-stay-for-the-wii-sports/">Come for the soft beds, stay for the Wii Sports</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Apr 2008 14:15:00 EST. The fame of being recognized by avatar-less commenters and the fortune of having 14 people see your video are just some of the small things Wii Fanboy can bring to the table.<br /><br />All kidding aside, this guy is <em>good</em>. Well, for those of you who had time to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/wii-fanboy-poll-how-can-activision-make-it-up-to-you/">check in on our poll</a> and voiced that you would like a full refund for the game, Activision has announced that they're doing just that. While many of you wait on the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/26/wireless-ghiii-guitars-to-be-sold-separately-at-some-point-in-th/">official Les Pauls</a> to hit the open market, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/08/nyko-introduces-first-third-party-wii-guitar/">third-party solutions</a> from companies <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/11/a-closer-look-at-the-nyko-perfect-shot-and-wireless-guitar/">like Nyko</a> are likely presenting themselves as increasingly better choices as each new day passes. It's okay, we think they look kind of sweet, too!<br /><br />Now, there's another option courtesy of CTA Digital. The guitar (pictured) looks like the inside of a ski lodge, to be honest. At least it's a dark shade, as an oak-like finish would've not been all-too-pleasing to the eye, if we may say so. <br /><br />One problem we've encountered is we can't find it anywhere. We've searched some of the distributors that are listed on CTA's website, but none lead to an actual listing for this guitar. So, we have no idea in regards to price at this moment.<br /><br />[Thanks, Dan!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/19/nyko-not-the-only-ones-making-a-guitar/">Nyko not the only ones making a guitar</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Reader Joe wrote in to us to inform that he had gotten his mailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/22/guitar-hero-replacement-discs-ship-next-month/">his replacement copy</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/rockers-report-guitar-hero-iii-dolby-pro-logic-ii-is-missing/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a>. It's something we talk about quite a bit around the offices here and you all no doubt have a somewhat bad taste in your mouth after finally getting the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/about-the-dumbest-way-to-play-guitar-hero-3/">Guitar Hero</a> </em>franchise on a Nintendo console. We're hip to it, we understand.<br /><br />But, were you one of the folks who are in need of a replacement disc? Have you received your mailer too? For those of you who might have steered clear of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/korea-two-guitar-heroes-enter-one-guitar-hero-leaves/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero III</span></a> because the price was just too high for you, take note: Toys R Us is now offering up the bundle for $69.99, which is $20 less than its normal price. With that extra coin, you could pick up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/13/thrustmaster-offers-up-wireless-classic-controller/">a classic controller</a> or just pocket the cash. Getting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/28/a-sign-of-guitars-to-come/">the wireless Les Paul</a> that comes bundled in for $20 less than everyone else would make us feel <span style="font-style: italic;">so special</span>, if you ask us.<br /><br />Head on past the break for a look at the ad for the price drop.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/toys-r-us-slashes-price-on-guitar-hero-iii-bundle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toys R Us slashes price on Guitar Hero III bundle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/05/toys-r-us-slashes-price-on-guitar-hero-iii-bundle/">Toys R Us slashes price on Guitar Hero III bundle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Korea is apparently the place to be when it comes to the integration of gaming and television, as the country doesn't have to put up with the insipid mess of G4 like those of us in the United States. Instead, they look at gaming as more of a competitive sport, showcasing contests between gamers (the example here being <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitar-hero-iii/"><em>Guitar Hero</em></a>). Sounds like win to us (unless we were to go up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/this-kid-will-totally-mess-you-up-in-guitar-hero-iii/">against this kid</a>), as we all like to brag about our gaming achievements (34 stars in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/supermariogalaxy"><em>Super Mario Galaxy</em></a> for this blogger, hells yeah).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=33992">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/korea-two-guitar-heroes-enter-one-guitar-hero-leaves/">Korea: Two Guitar Heroes enter, one Guitar Hero leaves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 23 Jan 2008 21:00:00 EST. Heck, even our own Mike Sylvester <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/06/revolutionary-guitar-heroes-are-made-not-born/">has had</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/04/revolutionary-speed-metal/">some fun</a> with the Wii's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/31/a-look-at-the-wireless-les-paul-in-guitar-hero-iii/"><em>Guitar Hero III </em>controller</a>. Now, we see one individual take the PS2 peripheral and reshape it into a turntable. <br /><br />While not entirely compatible with the game (we can't imagine trying to effectively complete songs on a difficulty higher than medium), we still find the mod to be pretty darn cool. The company offered some more concrete information about the release of their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/07/wireless-nunchuk-removes-the-very-last-controller-cord-from-your/">Wireless Nunchuck</a>, specifying a Q1 2008 release window and $30 price point for this product.<br /><br />Their other Wii peripheral is something that fills a very important need in the Wii accessory lineup: a standalone <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/27/this-kid-will-totally-mess-you-up-in-guitar-hero-iii/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> controller. The Nyko Frontman Wireless Guitar is a wireless (obviously) controller styled after the <a href="http://www.fender.com/products//search.php?partno=0141502389">Fender Telecaster</a>. <strong> <em><strong>Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition</strong></em> (Wii)<br /><br /></strong>For a port of a two-year-old game, <em>RE4: Wii Edition</em> didn't have a whole lot going for it. It had the same extra features as the PS2 port of the game, not-so-updated graphics, and slightly lower reviews than its original iteration -- and yet, somehow, just by changing how the game is controlled, Capcom created an entirely new adventure. When the peculiar controls for the Wii were first announced, this is the type of interactivity that I imagined from the future games for the system -- responsive, accurate, and realistic. The only way they could have made the gunplay feel any more natural would have been to package the game with an actual gun, which you shot at the on-screen zombies. Once.<strong><br /><em></em></strong><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/02/best-of-the-rest-griffins-picks-of-2007/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Griffin's Picks of 2007</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/02/best-of-the-rest-griffins-picks-of-2007/">Best of the Rest: Griffin's Picks of 2007</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Jan 2008 02:30:00 EST. Well, perhaps the song selection will make more sense to you than the headline. Still not content with the initial track list in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitarheroIII"><em>Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock</em></a>, Activision has revealed the contents of the rock 'n rhythmer's next set of downloadable content (but not the price, so no accusing them of pitching a con-tent just yet). Right, on to the content: <br /><br /><u>The Warner/Reprise Track Pack</u> (master recordings)
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=ggHtHZfeUic">"Pretty Handsome Awkward"</a> by The Used</li>
    <li><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=y-2alwdcmrs">"Sleeping Giant"</a> by Mastadon</li>
    <li><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=ljsJCibW0Sg">"No More Sorrow"</a> by Linkin Park</li>
</ul>
<u>Single song downloads (courtesy of "popular European bands")<br /></u>

</ul>
<u>"Free, exclusive rock rendition" of a holiday classic<br /></u>

</ul>
In fitting with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/velvet-revolver-foo-fighter-guitar-hero-iii-track-packs-hit-xbo/">tradition</a>, you can expect the Warner/Reprise/Wrist Slasher Special track pack to cost $6.25 when it appears on the Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Network sometime in December. We'll let you know as soon we've confirmed the prices of the individual songs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/14/guitar-hero-iii-dlc-the-used-mastadon-roams-linkin-park/">Guitar Hero III DLC: The Used Mastadon roams Linkin Park</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Dec 2007 20:45:00 EST. You're a rebel. You don't listen intently for thoughtful gift ideas before hitting the mall months ahead of the holiday shopping season. No, you march to your own tune - a tune, which we should add, is more than likely generated by clicking brightly colored plastic buttons on a plastic guitar - and you wait until the last minute to get your gift ideas from a blog, a video game blog, of all places. <br /><br />Relax, you're amongst peers. Which is why we just had to show you these vinyl guitar straps with that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=i+am+8-bit">i am 8-bit</a> aesthetic we know you're so crazy about. Yeah, it's really a Christmas present for yourself, but you've been good this year, right? <br />When eBay seller k_lid found his fifteen-year-old son Isaac smoking marijuana on the patio with two of his "delinquent friends," he did what any respectable parent would do: he calmly removed his son's copy of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitarhero3/"><em>Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock</em></a> from beneath the Christmas tree, and put it up for sale on eBay, complete with a lengthy description about <em>why </em>it was being auctioned.<br /><br />With the listing underway, all that was left to do was show the auction page to Isaac, who apparently "was not amused" by the sight of his number one Christmas present going on sale. Funny, that.<br /><br />But kudos to k_lid, we say. That's a pretty calculating, imaginative punishment, and there's nothing wrong with a bit of <em>tough love</em>. Didn't do us any harm. Apart from the panic attacks. And the nightmares. And the endless twitching.<br /><br />[Thanks, Chris!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/dad-finds-son-smoking-pot-attacks-his-weak-point-for-massive-da/">Dad finds son smoking pot, attacks his weak point for massive damage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 18:00:00 EST. Irritating instrument exclusion news now, with <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/836/836267p1.html">IGN</a> revealing unpleasant information to those eager to start a fake band in presence of the PlayStation 3. The article notes that the PS3's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gh3"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> controller, the Les Paul, does not currently function with <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RockBand/">Rock Band</a></em>. The Red Octane peripheral is recognized as a controller and works for menu selections, but it does not register as an instrument. Well, that certainly sticks it to the man... where the man is Harmonix's touting of Rock Band as a music "platform."<br /><br />Giving the developer the benefit of the doubt, one could speculate that this inconsistency will be dealt with in a downloadable patch. After all, the Xbox 360's Les Paul works just fine with the Xbox 360 variant of <em>Rock Band</em> -- this lack of peripheral support would only be rendered worse if it wasn't even consistent across systems. With no standalone <em>Rock Band</em> instruments available <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/rock-band-in-bundle-only-until-2008/">until 2008</a>, the only way of completing the PS3 experience as things stand would be to purchase the $180 bundle <em>again</em> (as if <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/ea-rock-band-may-face-shortages-through-years-end/">finding one</a> wasn't hard enough). After the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/NPD/">NPD</a> group's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/12/npd-to-continue-providing-monthly-console-sales-data/">short-lived hesitation</a> in providing monthly US console sales data spawned many an unhappy emoticon, it comes as a great relief to present October's magnificent results. This is especially true considering that all platforms have ducked out of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/18/september-npd-xbox-360-takes-the-lead-halo-3-to-thank/">last month</a>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo3"><em>Halo</em></a> effect and returned to their familiar positions -- the Wii and DS are back on top and the PlayStation 3 is, well, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/15/sony-says-ps3-sales-increased-dramatically-wont-reflect-in-npd/">you know</a></em>. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/halo-3-guitar-hero-iii-wii--ds-lead-11-billion-in-sales-for-october--/18565/">GameDaily</a> notes that the industry once again saw over $1 billion dollars leaving wallets at uncanny speeds, placing total sales for the year (through October) at $10.5 billion. At the same time last year, the amount had "just" reached $7 billion. <br />

Anyone who's spent even a little time rocking out to <em>Guitar Hero III</em> has likely noticed the game's heavy-handed approach to product placement, with stages littered with cans of Red Bull and billboards hocking everything from Axe Body Spray to Pontiac. The whole thing feels oppressive and graceless as even the game's underground rock venues are reduced to feeling like props to corporate shilling. And things are likely to get worse before they get better, as Activision today announced that it has inked a deal with Microsoft-owned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/massive">Massive</a> to provide in-game ads in not only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitarhero3"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a>, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tonyhawk/"><em>Tony Hawk's Proving Ground</em></a> as well. <br /><br />The two titles have been added to the growing Massive Network advertising collective, which also includes Activision's <em>Transformers </em>adaptation, and will made to include "contextually relevant" dynamic ads. Interestingly, it's unclear if this partnership extends to all versions of the affected (afflicted?) games, or just those for Microsoft's console. What is clear, however, is that as games are now a big business, more and more companies are beginning to get in line for their slice of the money pie, and while game companies and advertisers reap the benefits of this arrangement, gamers are left holding the controller wondering just when their games became interactive commercials.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/14/guitar-hero-tony-hawk-getting-in-game-ad-treatment/">Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk getting in-game ad treatment</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 11:57:00 EST. First, the good news! The Xbox 360's sleek, wireless <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/09/guitar-hero-iii-gets-subtitle-cool-guitars/">Gibson Les Paul</a> controller that made its debut with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitarhero3"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> has been confirmed by the wonderful folks at <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/49827">Shacknews</a> to be fully compatible with the upcoming PC version of Activision's rhythmic rocker. It's not "officially" supported by develo-porter <a href="http://www.aspyr.com/product/game_specs/85">Aspyr</a>, mind you, but you'll find it works just fine for setting those <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/360s-guitar-hero-ii-axe-working-in-os-x-frets-on-fire/">frets on fire</a> -- all you need is the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver.<br /><br />The bad news (don't be shocked, we alluded to this in the first paragraph!) is that <em>Guitar Hero III</em>'s PC variant, which releases November 12th, <em>already</em> comes packaged with a guitar, namely the Gibson X-plorer which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/27/its-official-guitar-hero-ii-heading-to-xbox-360/">accompanied</a> <em>Guitar Hero II</em> on the Xbox 360. It's uglier, it's wired and simply won't let you play the game from ridiculous and impractical distances! It seems the Gibson Les Paul is only a worthwhile option if you desire a second controller or if you can track down a standalone version of the game. Can't you help out with this, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Steam/">Steam</a>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/wireless-guitar-hero-3-controller-functions-with-pc-version/">Wireless Guitar Hero 3 controller functions with PC version</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 09 Nov 2007 03:00:00 EST. OK, so there's good news and there's bad news. The good news is that the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GuitarHeroIII/">Guitar Hero III</a></em> skills that you've worked so hard to cultivate could actually nab you a big prize: A 2008 Pontiac G5. The bad news: All of the stops in the Pontiac Garage <em>Guitar Hero III</em> tournament will be held ... inside Hot Topics.<br /><br />Although <em>GHIII </em>is fine and you could probably survive being in Hot Topic, playing <em>Guitar Hero III </em>within the walls of a Hot Topic actual conscripts you into an emo band. It's true: A spectral version of Morrissey appears and eats all but .5 percent of your body fat, tears pre-caked in eyeliner spurt from your eyes and members of Jimmy Eat World chloroform you and force you to play bass. It's a nightmare. <br /><br />If it's worth the risk to you you can see all the details <a href="http://www.guitarhero.com/news_posts/6">here</a>. Of course, release dates come into play, as various parts of the world get games at different times, but there's a surprising amount of crossover when we look at what's big among Wii owners around the world.<br /><br />Not everything is surprising: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/30/rockers-report-guitar-hero-iii-dolby-pro-logic-ii-is-missing/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero III</span></a> is shredding most of the competition in the US, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/15/metroid-preview-channel-lighting-up-pal-wiis/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Metroid Prime 3</span></a> is clinging to a top spot in the UK, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/02/watch-some-more-super-mario-galaxy-gameplay-you-know-you-wanna/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Super Mario Galaxy</span></a> is muscling out other titles in Japan. But with the sales the various minigame collections are boasting, is it any wonder we've seen so many? Even the lackluster <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/03/carnival-games-only-for-vanilla-faces/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Carnival Games</span></a> is raking in the money in multiple regions. It is likely a time when turning the volume up to 10 isn't enough. But, many might have found that the experience has been tainted by the lack of Dolby Pro Logic II.<br /><br />News first burst on the scene thanks to users over at the <a href="http://www.guitarhero.com/forums/8/forum_topics/1258?page=1">official forums</a> for <em>Guitar Hero</em>, where the title's lack of compatibility with Dolby Pro Logic II was reported by several Wii owners. The official response from tech support has been "We are looking in to right now. The time frame is still unknown at the moment we are still looking in to the problem."<br /><br />Any of you out there experiencing the same issues? Sure, we may go crazy over Harmonix and Electronic Arts' love child <em>Rock Band</em>, but data from IGN's <a href="http://www.gamermetrics.com/pages/about_out.jsp">GamerMetrics</a> reminds us that the franchise has a ways to go if it wants to overtake its distant cousin <em>Guitar Hero III</em>. <br /><br />According to the statistics, there were 22 million page views on IGN for <em>Guitar Hero III-</em>related articles, vs. 10 million for <em>Rock Band</em> (a 120% increase). <em>GHIII</em> was also on almost twice as many wishlists (5,755 vs. 2,928) as its competitor and over six times as many message board posts (25,000 vs. 4,000).<br /><br />The <em>Guitar Hero </em>series has a lot more going for it right now, including a two-year history of commercially and critically successful titles. Commentary provided with the data notes that <em>Rock Band</em> has "experienced a noticeable surge in both awareness and purchase intent metrics" in the past three months, which bodes well for the game due out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/rock-band-community-site/">November 20</a>. <em>Guitar Hero III </em>is coming next week.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/25/study-guitar-hero-iii-has-more-groupies-than-rock-band/">Study: Guitar Hero III has more groupies than Rock Band</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Oct 2007 15:55:00 EST. Though we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/03/aerosmith-cream-disturbed-many-others-added-to-guitar-hero-ii/">already knew</a> "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" was going to be in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/GuitarHero3/">Guitar Hero 3</a></em> we didn't realize it was going to be the final track (the end boss, if you will). A helpful press release just informed us of the distinction while pointing us to this MP3 file of the now fiddle-free version. Gone is the violin and in its stead is, of course, a guitar - a fast guitar - played by one <a href="http://www.steveouimette.com/devil-went-down-to-georgia-to-appear-on-guitar-hero-3-soundtrack/">Mr. Steve Ouimette</a> who, when asked for comment said, "I told you once, you son of a bitch, I'm the best that's ever been."<br /><br /><center><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=7,0,0,0" width="260" height="60" id="mp3tube" align="middle" border="0"><param name="movie" value="http://www.mp3tube.net/play.swf?id=4f55372c7c1ffe1ecc8f0aaa9005b79f" /><param name="quality" value="High" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent"><param name="menu" value="false"><embed src="http://www.mp3tube.net/play.swf?id=4f55372c7c1ffe1ecc8f0aaa9005b79f" quality="High" width="260" height="60" name="mp3tube" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" wmode="transparent" menu="false" /></object></center><br />Peep the entire track list to date after the break (with helpful YouTube links!).<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/hear-gh3s-fiddle-free-version-of-the-devil-went-down-to-georgi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hear GH3's fiddle-free version of 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/hear-gh3s-fiddle-free-version-of-the-devil-went-down-to-georgi/">Hear GH3's fiddle-free version of 'The Devil Went Down to Georgia'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Oct 2007 16:15:00 EST. That website describes it as the hardest in the game, designed to be "unbeatable." And Nick conquered it.<br /><br />Yes, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/26/its-guitar-hero-day-in-new-york-apparently/">weeks</a> before you adoring, fake guitar fans get <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/15/joystiq-hands-on-guitar-hero-iii/">a chance to play</a>, the hardest song has been bested by a player on his fourth attempt. The video of the event is mediocre, and the moment of triumph is anticlimactic. ("Go balloons, go balloons, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FTtIbkTWTY">we need more balloons</a>. ...") But we were still floored watching this face-melting song --and player -- in action.<br /><br />Be amazed by the clip after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/06/todays-shredingest-video-guitar-hero-iii-victor/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Today's shredingest video: Guitar Hero III victor</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/06/todays-shredingest-video-guitar-hero-iii-victor/">Today's shredingest video: Guitar Hero III victor</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 06 Oct 2007 01:00:00 EST. Word comes from our overlords at Joystiq that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/10/the-wii-guitar-hero-controller-first-image/"><em>Guitar Hero III</em></a> will include plenty more tracks, some from classic bands and some from newer musicians on the block. And we know how much you folks are looking forward to the franchise's first installment on the Wii, so we figured we'd let you know just exactly what these new tracks are. We're nice like that,<br />

Lacuna Coil <em>and</em> In Flames? Rock on! We couldn't be happier with the new tracks confirmed to be included in <em>Guitar Hero III</em>, to tell the truth. Along with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/2-new-guitar-hero-iii-tracks-revealed/">yesterday's</a> <em>Guitar Hero III </em>news, we'd say we're getting very excited for the third installment in the franchise. Not like we wouldn't of been excited for it, anyway.<br /><br />Your new tracks for rocking:<br />

While navigating the pre-order boxes, one savvy investigator found the box for <span style="font-style: italic;">Guitar Hero III</span> includes two as-of-yet unannounced songs. Introducing The Killers' "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVCkSMwaGGc">When You Were Young</a>" and Santana's "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ok9IJU6JC6c">Black Magic Woman</a>," they join the already fairly large roster of songs for the game. While this could be a misprint, common sense argues that these two songs will most definitely be in the final version of the game.<br /><br />Of course, with the recent inclusion of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/16/that-bret-sounds-like-such-a-nice-boy/">Bret Michaels</a> in the game, we wonder if Santana will also lend himself as a legend to play with. And, if you've not been paying attention, we've got a full breakdown of the confirmed songs past the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/2-new-guitar-hero-iii-tracks-revealed/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>2 new Guitar Hero III tracks revealed?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/2-new-guitar-hero-iii-tracks-revealed/">2 new Guitar Hero III tracks revealed?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 21 Aug 2007 16:30:00 EST. "She Bangs the Drums" by the Stone Roses is the newest in a long list of excellent tracks featured in the game. According to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NME">NME</a>, a very popular music magazine in the UK, the album that "She Bangs the Drums" hails from is consistently voted the number one British album ever.<br /></div>
<br />We're loving the track list for <em>Guitar Hero 3</em> so far. There's a nice mix of eighties, geek rock and cult classics. All we need now are some decent British indie rock tunes. We know <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/11/rock-band-to-have-weekly-dlc-full-album-downloads-and-metallic/">Metallica is in <em>Rock Band</em></a>, but what about <em>Guitar Hero III</em>? That question has been answered and answered well. As it turns out, <em>Guitar Hero III</em> will not only feature Metallica -- the news was <a href="http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=17020">slipped</a> during an Activision conference call -- but the song to be featured is "One," and what's more, it's a master track. Metallica fans couldn't ask for much better than that. If the end result of having two competing music games is more awesome tracks for both of them, then we say bring on the competition.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/02/metallica-in-guitar-hero-iii-not-just-rock-band/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/03/let-the-showdown-begin-ghiii-nabs-metallica/">Let the showdown begin: GHIII nabs Metallica</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 03 Aug 2007 13:45:00 EST. The song will be <em>One</em>, a master track off of Metallica's <em>...And Justive for All</em> album. Yep, we're phoning in our jokes for this post. We're fairly certain every single <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/guitarhero3"><em>Guitar Hero</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RockBand"><em>Rock Band</em></a> joke that can be made already has. Mostly by Joystiq, in fact. Here's the list of newly revealed songs which will be in <em>Guitar Hero III</em> this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/guitar-hero-iii-rocking-onto-european-playstation-3s-on-october/">October</a>:<br /><br />
<ul>
    <li> Miss Murder (by AFI)</li>
    <li> Through Fire and Flames (by Dragonforce)</li>
    <li> Number of the Beast (by Iron Maiden)</li>
    <li> 3's and 7's (by Queens of the Stone Age)</li>
    <li> Suck My Kiss (by Red Hot Chili Peppers)</li>
    <li> Raining Blood (by Slayer)</li>
    <li> Reptillia (by The Strokes)</li>
    <li> Paranoid (as made famous by Black Sabbath)</li>
    <li> Cities on Flame (as made famous by Blue Oyster Cult)</li>
    <li> Mississippi Queen (as made famous by Mountain)</li>
    <li> La Grange (as made famous by ZZ Top)</li>
</ul>
<br />Here's a tip: Songs that are "by [bandname]" are master tracks and songs that are "made famous by [bandname]" are rerecorded. Not a bad list, so far. Better than <em>Rocks the 80s</em>, by any rate. What songs would you like to see in the game?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/02/eleven-guitar-hero-3-songs-revealed/">Eleven Guitar Hero 3 songs revealed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Aug 2007 16:30:00 EST. In addition to the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/26/chili-peppers-zz-top-iron-maiden-in-guitar-hero-iii/">four previously revealed</a> to fan community ScoreHero, the following songs were also announced:<br />
<ul>
    <li><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=W3wH6y6-768">"Miss Murder,"</a> by AFI</li>
    <li><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=BJjtaTzO3DA">"3's and 7's,"</a> by Queens of the Stone Age</li>

    <li><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=Fl96MPmoXWU">"Cities on Flame,"</a> as made famous by Blue Oyster Cult</li>
    <li><a href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=KszD_MfB798">"Mississippi Queen,"</a> as made famous by Mountain</li>
</ul>
We're pretty interested in seeing which tracks will also be found on <em>Guitar Hero</em> competitor <em>Rock Band</em>, from original <em>GH</em> developer Harmonix -- "Mississippi Queen" was <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/07/06/video-rock-bands-mississippi-queen/">previously shown</a> in one pre-E3 video.
