Sega's Halloween sale might be the scariest yet. Starting tomorrow, the publisher is discounting some of its iOS games, including a couple that we'd literally be afraid to try on a touchscreen interface -- like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/23/now-you-can-play-gunstar-heroes-on-iphone-if-you-want/"><em>Gunstar Heroes</em></a>.<br />
<br />
You'll also be able to get a game for 99 cents that is abstracted enough from its source to be comparable to a ghost story or urban legend. Have you heard of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/the-worst-version-of-virtua-fighter-2-now-on-iphone/">iPhone version</a> of the Genesis version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/20/the-worst-version-of-virtua-fighter-2-now-on-iphone/"><em>Virtua Fighter 2</em></a>? Legend has it you can see it if you search the App Store at the stroke of midnight, or any other time. It was once an arcade game, but then a mad scientist made a 2D Genesis game out of it. And then, years later, an even madder scientist ported it to iOS.<br />
<br />
Other listed deals include <em>Brick People</em> and <em>Chu Chu Rocket!</em> for iPad, for $1 each. Those aren't really that scary.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/24/segas-halloween-app-sale-is-chilling/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sega's Halloween App sale is chilling</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/24/segas-halloween-app-sale-is-chilling/">Sega's Halloween App sale is chilling</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 24 Oct 2011 14:00:00 EST. Are you just a few marks short of achieving your dream of being able to play <em>Gunstar Heroes</em> on every gaming platform known to mankind? You can go ahead and check "PC" off your list -- the game, alongside other classics like <em>Alien Soldier</em>, <em>Landstalker</em>, <em>Light Crusader</em>, <em>Shining Force</em>, <em>Shining Force II</em>, <em>Shining in the Darkness</em>, <em>Sonic 2</em>, <em>Sonic 3</em>, <em>Sonic and Knuckles</em>, <em>Streets of Rage</em>, <em>Streets of Rage 2</em>, <em>ToeJam and Earl</em>, <em>ToeJam and Earl in Panic on Funkotron</em>, and <em>Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair</em> have all arrived on Steam as part of the <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/news/4925/">SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive Classics Collection 4</a>.<br />
<br />
You can grab each of these gems (well, some of them are gems, anyways) for $2.99 a pop. You could also grab <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/sub/7096/">a bundle</a> featuring 10 of the games above for $7.50 -- though this collection is missing both <em>ToeJam and Earl</em> games, so like, what's the point?<br type="_moz" /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/more-sega-genesis-classics-added-to-steam/">More Sega Genesis classics added to Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Jan 2011 21:00:00 EST. It's turn-based, which means that you don't really need to rely on the virtual controls for quick, reflex-based actions. On the exact opposite end of the "good idea" continuum is Sega's latest iPhone port: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gunstar-heroes">Gunstar Heroes</a></em>.<br />
<br />
You could think of it as an "expert" edition. If you've somehow managed to master Treasure's run-and-gun masterpiece on the Genesis and/or Game Gear and/or Virtual Console, now try it without the benefit of knowing where the buttons are! <em>Gunstar Heroes</em> for iOS does have one rather impressive feature going for it: Bluetooth-based multiplayer. Perhaps it's time to invest in a set of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/21/touchscreen-phones-get-psuedo-buttons-with-tactile-plus-stickers/">Tactile+Plus</a> stickers!<br />

Sega and Nintendo have teamed up to offer players a few holiday VC deals, announcing on <a href="http://blogs.sega.com/europe/2009/12/22/happy-holidays-40-off-selected-sega-vc-titles/">Sega's UK blog</a> that select Virtual Console titles will be discounted for a limited time. From December 24, 2009, until January 6, 2010, select titles will be reduced to 500 Wii Points each from down from 800 Wii Points.<br />
<br />
Titles getting the 40% off treatment include such Genesis classics as <em>ToeJam &amp; Earl</em>, <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em>, <em>Sonic 2</em>, <em>Sonic 3</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/11/second-batch-of-sega-vintage-collection-titles-confirmed/"><em>Gunstar Heroes</em></a>, <em>Puyo Puyo 2</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/26/vc-in-brief-golden-axe-arcade-and-zombies-ate-my-neighbors/"><em>Golden Axe</em></a>, <em>Shining Force</em> and <em>Streets of Rage</em>. Also, for the lump of coal types, Sega has discounted the "admit it, it stinks" brawler, <em>Altered Beast</em>. It's a great offer for new Wii owners, or those looking to relive their lost youth.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/22/sega-discounting-select-virtual-console-titles-for-the-holidays/">Sega discounting select Virtual Console titles for the holidays</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 19:15:00 EST. Sega has announced plans to release seven more of its classic titles under the <em>Sega Vintage Collectio</em>n banner later this year, thus confirming one of Xbox Live Arcade's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/rumor-sega-vintage-collection-coming-to-xbla/">worst-kept secrets</a>. Included in <em>Sega Vintage Collection 2</em> are <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/19/achievements-confirm-xbla-release-of-altered-beast-shinobi-com/"><em>Shinobi</em> (arcade port), <em>Comix Zone</em>, <em>Altered Beast</em></a>,<em> Sonic the Hedgehog 3</em>, <em>Phantasy Star II</em>, <em>Sonic &amp; Knuckles</em> and<em> <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/gunstar-heroes-achievements-hint-at-xbla-release/">Gunstar Heroes</a></em>. Interestingly, <em>Gunstar Heroes</em> is the only title also announced for the PSN.<br /><br />According to Sega, each title will include online leaderboards, re-worked graphics (using smoothing filters, not HD upgrades) and most will feature network play (<em>Comix Zone,</em> <em>Phantasy Star II</em> and <em>Shinobi</em> excluded). No word on pricing or release dates but Sega plans to release the titles separately this summer, with <em>Sonic &amp; Knuckles</em> appearing last. Why the delay? With <em>Sonic &amp; Knuckles</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-vintage-collection-2/2008393/"><em>Sonic 2</em> XBLA</a> and <em>Sonic 3</em> XBLA owners will be able to use the classic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_&amp;_Knuckles#Lock-on_technology">lock-on feature</a> from the Genesis-era to import Knuckles into each classic adventure. Of course, if patience isn't your best quality, you could just buy <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/sega-announces-sonics-ultimate-genesis-collection-includes-4/">Sonic's Genesis Collection</a></em> now (which <em>doesn't</em> support lock-on).<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-vintage-collection-2/">Sega Vintage Collection 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-vintage-collection-2/#2008393"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/knuckles-in-sonic-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-vintage-collection-2/#2008392"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/sonic-and-knuckles-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-vintage-collection-2/#2008391"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/sonic-and-knuckles-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-vintage-collection-2/#2008390"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/sonic-and-knuckles-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/sega-vintage-collection-2/#2008389"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/05/sonic-and-knuckles-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/11/second-batch-of-sega-vintage-collection-titles-confirmed/">Second batch of Sega Vintage Collection titles confirmed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 May 2009 15:30:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.esrb.org/ratings/search.jsp">ESRB</a> and <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/04/gunstar-heroes-targeting-playstation-network/">PEGI</a> have rated Sega's <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/gunstar-heroes">Gunstar Heroes</a></em> for the PlayStation 3, presumably as a PSN title. This comes a week after an <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/gunstar-heroes-achievements-hint-at-xbla-release/">Achievement list</a> revealed the title was in the works for Xbox Live Arcade. The <em>big</em> question: will the game have online co-op?<br /><br />We've contacted Sega for official word on the game's features. Considering the ratings from both the US and European organizations, it's eventual appearance on consoles that aren't the Wii seems like a foregone (and very welcome!) conclusion.<br />[Via <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/04/gunstar-heroes-targeting-playstation-network/">SIliconera</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/gunstar-heroes-rated-by-pegi-esrb-for-ps3/">Gunstar Heroes rated by PEGI, ESRB for PS3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 04 May 2009 12:30:00 EST. That didn't take long. While Sega's <em>Gunstar Heroes</em> was noticeably absent from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/19/achievements-confirm-xbla-release-of-altered-beast-shinobi-com/">Achievements uncovered</a> earlier this month, <a href="http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/gunstar-heroes/achievements/">Xbox360Achievements</a> has again given us reason to live. Or at least reason enough to believe that the Treasure classic will be running and gunning for Xbox Live Arcade <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/rumor-sega-vintage-collection-coming-to-xbla/">sometime down the line</a>. <br /><br />The site highlights twelve Achievements for the fan favorite side-scroller, worth 200 points in all. While we're disappointed at the lack of creativity in the list, which mostly focuses overcoming the game's top baddies, we continue to hope for online co-op play once <em>Gunstar Heroes'</em> XBLA debut is made official. Come on Sega, make it happen! <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173952">1UP</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/28/gunstar-heroes-achievements-hint-at-xbla-release/">Gunstar Heroes Achievements hint at XBLA release</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Apr 2009 09:15:00 EST. An anonymous source apparently <a href="http://www.segaonline.nl/blog/2009/02/13/sega-vintage-collection-breid-uit/">tipped off Dutch gaming site Segaonline.nl</a> to some top secret images of <em>Sega Vintage Collection</em>, a series of retro titles making their way to Xbox Live. The games are what you'd expect; it's classic Sega fare with <em>Gunstar Heroes</em>, <em>Comix Zone</em>, <em>Altered Beast</em>, <em>Shinobi III</em>, and <em>Sonic the Hedgehog 3</em>.<br /><br />The images and information seem sound enough to us, but you know how it is with these things. "My uncle totally works at Nintendo," and "My mom is in Bill Gates' book club" are just a few of the lies we've heard when dealing with these types of rumors in the past. So keep that tucked under your cap when you <a href="http://www.segaonline.nl/blog/2009/02/13/sega-vintage-collection-breid-uit/">head over to check out the pictures</a>.<br /><br />If you would like a machine to <em>totally butcher</em> the translation for you, then <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.segaonline.nl%2Fblog%2F2009%2F02%2F13%2Fsega-vintage-collection-breid-uit%2F&amp;sl=nl&amp;tl=en&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8">click here</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/13/rumor-sega-vintage-collection-coming-to-xbla/">Rumor: Sega Vintage Collection coming to XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 Feb 2009 18:32:00 EST. The ESRB has rated several classic Sega titles for the Xbox 360 and PS3, which are presumed to be future XBLA or PSN releases. <a href="http://xboxlive.ign.com/articles/940/940518p1.html">IGN</a> takes note that <em>Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star II, Comix Zone </em>and<em> Sonic The Hedgehog 3</em> are all listed, but there's no word on release dates. All these titles are currently available on the Wii's Virtual Console.<br /><br />Assuming these sell for $5 each if they come to XBLA and PSN, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/06/sega-announces-sonics-ultimate-genesis-collection-includes-4/"><em>Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection</em></a>, releasing in "spring 2009" for $30, seems the more frugal choice. The disc-based collection features all of the above titles -- with the exception of <em>Gunstar Heroes</em> -- along with dozens more.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/23/esrb-classic-sega-games-coming-to-xbla-psn/">ESRB: Classic Sega games coming to XBLA, PSN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 23 Dec 2008 14:30:00 EST. <br />We love "Greatest of All Time" lists as much as the next guy, but Exploding Barrel's tally of the best cooperative multiplayer titles has a few glaring holes that we felt would be irresponsible to ignore. For your reference, here's their top ten:<br />
<ul style="float: left; margin-right: 120px;">
    <li><em>Ikari Warriors</em></li>
    <li><em>Contra</em></li>
    <li><em>Doom</em></li>
    <li><em>Double Dragon</em></li>
    <li><em>Golden Axe</em></li>
</ul>
<ul>
    <li><em>Halo 3</em></li>
    <li><em>Lego Star Wars</em></li>
    <li><em>Gears of War</em></li>
    <li><em>Toe Jam &amp; Earl</em></li>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Rock-Band/">Rock Band</a></em></li>
</ul>
While the list pays proper tribute to fanboy favorites like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Contra">Contra</a></em> and <em>Toejam &amp; Earl</em>, we have a few suggestions for improving this "draft."<br /><br />First on the agenda, expand the list to include the classics pictured above. Second, replace the "inferior" games with more appropriate titles. We're sure no one would mind if we switched out <em>Doom</em> with <em>Secret of Mana</em>. While we're at it, let's cross out <em>Halo 3</em> and pencil in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tmnt">TMNT II: The Arcade Game</a></em>. And <em>Gears of War</em>? More like <em>Gears of Let's Play Zombies Ate My Neighbors Instead</em>, right?<br /><br />Now that you've heard our arguments, what co-op games would you rank up there? <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.pheedo.com/click.phdo?i=b7d64954fe88d590b365ac932bd2f8f4">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/27/an-incomplete-list-of-the-greatest-co-op-games-of-all-time/">An incomplete list of 'The Greatest Co-Op Games of All Time'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 27 Mar 2008 18:00:00 EST. Each member of the Wii Fanboy staff has carefully chosen one game currently available on the U.S. Virtual Console, and we're ready to show our appreciation by gifting the lot to one lucky reader. <em>But guys! What if I already have the game in question?</em> Well, dear reader, we've also each chosen <em>back-up</em> titles, just in case. If the winner has one, we'll move onto the next. If you have all of them? Maybe you should hang back and let someone else win! 'Tis the season of giving, after all.<br /><br />To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling us what you'd be most likely to give away, if you were so inclined. You may enter <strong>once per day</strong>, and we must receive your comments between now and December 20. The giveaway closes shop that night at 11:59 PM EST, so get to work! We'll announce the winner December 21. As usual, entries are limited to legal U.S. residents age 18 and older. Please check the <a href="http://www.weblogsinc.com/weblogs-giveaways-official-rules/">official rules</a> for any other questions.<br /><u><strong><br />Wii Fanboy's Virtual Console Gift Pack</strong></u>
