Have you loaded up some multiplayer in Gears of War 3 yet today? You may notice something festive: all players now have gigantic cartoonish pumpkin heads in celebration of Halloween.

The video above was captured and sent in by one of our readers. Overall, it's a pretty neat nod to the holiday, if we may say so, though the headshot around the 1:20 mark is a bit unsettling. We don't like the idea of blood inside of a pumpkin.

Dolphins! Every adolescent girl on the planet loves dolphins, but being a fan of marine life in general, I really liked dolphins. I was certainly among the many, many girls with Lisa Frank school supplies emblazoned with imagery of brightly airbrushed, neon-colored dolphins, but I was far more into porpoises than even that, with plenty of other themed baubles in my possession. So, of course, when Ecco the Dolphin came out for the Genesis, I was excited to check the game out, especially with the rave reviews it had received in magazines at the time.

Little did I suspect the horrors Sega and Novotrade had in store for me.

In celebration of everyone's favorite cosplay justification, Valve has released a free update for their free-to-play free-for-all Team Fortress 2, which promises an "ENORMOUS HAUNTED EYEBALL," as well as fresh 'chievos and costumes for each class. There's even a comic to provide a little backstory, which is worth checking out strictly for its artistic merit, even if TF2 isn't your jam.

We may not have held a pumpkin carving contest this year, but that didn't stop Joystiq pun'kin' veteran Dennis C. from creating a hauntingly gorgeous gourd for us all to gaze upon. Recreating two of the most nerve-racking scenes from Limbo's forest area, this carved masterpiece serves as an example of just how impressively captivating a hollowed out dead thing can be when given to the right artist.

Well, "Hell no!" if you regularly defend dungeons on your PC, at any rate. PSN and XBLA defenders will have to make due, but Steam users can download Dungeon Defenders' Halloween Costume and Mission packs for free, right this very instant. In aggregate, the packs include eight new costumes, a "devilishly hard" Halloween mission, eight new seasonal weapons, and a redecorated tavern for Halloween merry-making.

We don't want PSN or XBLA defenders feeling left out, so we recommend imagining how different your life would be had you purchased the game on Steam, instead of your console of choice. Terrifying!

  • Asparagus-eating contests
  • The entire town acting out Hamlet at the same time, with their own grandfathers' skulls playing the part of Yorick
  • Jumping off a 60-foot cliff into a pile of dead leaves
  • Grave-robbing (that one stuck, but it became year-round and highly lucrative in a non-spiritual way)
  • Eggplant, leek, corn and lentil carving
Most of these died out with the maypole, but that last one may have led us to the modern fascination with pumpkin carving, which has now led us to these beautiful video-game-inspired pumpkins from ceemdee. This year's pumpkins feature Bastion, Doom 2, The Dig, Worms, Oregon Trail, Outlaws and Magicka. Apparently ceemdee has been doing this since 2009, and the squashy backlog is just as impressive.

Forming a "strategic consultancy" with Beefy Media, the newly minted TWC Games label will look to further capitalize on Weinstein properties, notably from its Dimension Films division, by bringing them to mobile, social and console platforms.

Beefy teases that "we have a bunch of products in development," but no specific game announcements have been made at this time. The Dimension label houses a host of horror franchises, including Scream, Hellraiser, Halloween and Children of the Corn, in addition to lighter fare, like Scary Movie and Spy Kids.

Scream 4 hits theaters in three weeks -- so plenty of time to put together a "compelling, high quality, cost-efficient" port. They just have to change those pumpkin heads to Scream masks.

The company probably got a nice boost during the month by offering the next two game expansions for free to those who purchased the title before All Hallows' Eve.

Stardock has been doing a pretty solid job so far of turning the strategy RPG's "disastrous" launch around. Elemental may have been born prematurely, but with proper oversight from the game's new senior producer, the franchise might just grow up into a respectable member of society.

He'll be waiting for you in the spooky new Mann Manor map, which would be a much more frightening prospect if your whole team wasn't overladen with giant guns at all times.

Sounds just delightful, doesn't it?

PC Gamer recently checked out the new area -- and its hovering, flame-spitting inhabitants -- in an early preview. If you want to be prepared for the Ghasts' particularly unpleasant form of attack, we suggest you start doing your research.

So he and his dad set out to build a replica of Samus's Metroid Prime-era Varia Suit, starting with the arm cannon. The final cannon has a speaker and LED lights controlled by an Arduino microcontroller, so it can be made to fire simulated Power Beam, Plasma Beam and charged shots. Joseph even has to correctly "log in" to use it!

The rest of the costume is still incomplete, but at this point Joseph has a perfectly acceptable backup costume: "Guy With This Awesome Arm Cannon."

A blog post on the official website for the biggest indie hit in all of recorded human history, Minecraft, has revealed that a whole slew of new features will be added to the title as part of a "Halloween Update." These new features are fairly wide-reaching, including new monsters (which are "actually difficult this time around"), torches which eventually extinguish over time, fishing, the ability to fast travel by moving through an (assumedly dangerous) "hell world," and a craftable wristwatch, which lets players keep track of how much time is left in the day before the baddies rear their ugly heads.

There are also a few mechanical changes to the game planned for the October 31 update as well, such as new music and sounds, a few bug fixes and additional multiplayer functionality. We sure hope you can finish your to-scale recreation of the Taj Mahal before Halloween, because, man, it sounds your build site is going to get hazardous.

As reported from last month's Develop conference, Double Fine - the San Francisco-based development studio led by Tim Schafer - won't be following up Brütal Legend with Brütal Legend 2. Instead, it's working on four "smaller" games, the first of which has just been revealed. Costume Quest is the first of two games being published by THQ and it's not being designed by Tim Schafer himself.

"The concept is the brainchild of Double Fine lead animator Tasha Harris," 1UP reports. Shafer explains, "we are coming out swinging with two great adventures from two of the most creative minds in the company."

While the game is being published by THQ's KFC business (that's Kids, Family, Casual Games), VP Martin Good says the games' "potential appeal could encompass both hardcore and casual players."

Costume Quest has a Halloween theme and, in what is surely a coincidence, a Halloween release date this year on both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. With extreme force.

Halloween actually falls on a Sunday this year, so we're not sure whether the Namco Bandai representative meant on Halloween or shortly before Halloween. We've contacted the developer to try and get a clarification. The new trailer above simply says "fall 2010."

The DSi version, published by Majesco, is set to come out near Halloween this year, and it's possible that other flavors might join it at that time.

"With the DSi we have location to some extent using the wifi chip, because we can kind of recognize when the user is in a new location, or where they are somewhere they've been before." Soderlund said, "But, we're thinking of taking to the iPhone or the Android which have more emphasis on location-based gameplay.

We hope Elvis' grave is first on the list.

According to police reports, the cabbie stopped his car at a gas station when one of the four patrons attempted to steal money out of his pocket. He asked the men to pay their fare and get out, which resulted in the attack.

In the video found on the NY Daily News website, two men dressed as Mario and Luigi can be seen assaulting the cab driver while another person in their party stands about, presumably watching for interference. The men are still at large and police are asking those with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto NYPD Crime Stoppers, or text 274637 then enter "TIP577."

Oh, you thought it might come to the 360? That's adorable.

The update will temporarily introduce a King of the Hill map called "Harvest" into the mix, complete with Halloween-themed elements like collectible candy, exploding pumpkins, and the ghost of Zepheniah Mann, who temporarily freezes passersby in a gripping, powerful spell of fear. Five Achivements are available during the festivities, as well as a number of "Mildly Disturbing Halloween Hats," or paper bags with scary faces painted on them. If you're lucky, you might just get the one emblazoned with Joan Rivers' visage. Aaaaah!

Naughty Dog's Arne Meyer recently announced on Playstation.Blog that the half-tucked title would receive an update which addresses a number of multiplayer issues today. On top of that, anyone who plays the game online during this Halloween weekend will receive a treat infinitely more sweet than a fistful of Necco Wafers: Loads and loads of (in-game) cash money.

Yes, the next few days will be a "Double Cash Weekend" for Uncharted 2 multiplayer matches. As you can probably suss out from the title, you'll earn double the rank-progressing moolah you would normally gain for playing the various online playlists. In addition, a bunch of Naughty Dog staffers will be playing this weekend -- presumably appearing as the crimson-eyed, skinless abominations seen above. We appreciate the work these folks have done, but following our strict undead infestation protocols, they must be purged.

We may raise our snobby noses as we pass by cosplayers at conventions, but once a year it becomes socially acceptable for us to embrace our inner theater student and don a disguise. Being people who spend quite a bit of time writing about or playing video games, we tend to err on the side of nerdery when it comes to Halloween outfits (shocking, we know). The folks at Fangamer coax this urge all the more when they release a full outfit of Earthbound's hero, Ness, on their site. Considering the striped "Shirtness," the accompanying "Earth Bounder" (the yo-yo) and the guarantee that it'll arrive before Halloween, the $54.99 asking price seems almost acceptable. Almost.

There's quite a spooky selection to choose from, including ghosts, cowboys, werewolves, vampires, wizards, witches and Frankenstein's monster. For good measure, Microsoft even threw in a skeleton and a mummy. All of the outfits cost 240 ($3), but you'll need to pay another 80 ($1) if your outfit of choice features a hat.

Perhaps the most frightening of all is the male Sheriff's outfit. It's something about the combination of the incredibly tight fit, coupled with the standard, effeminate Avatar pose. It just don't look right.

The first is dedicated to the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, and features a handful of mini-games for Home dwellers to enjoy. Playstation Home director Jack Buser seems particularly excited by the tower defense game, which has three different levels, one for the past, present and future. The space also includes plenty of rewards, including a Ratchet costume.

The second Home space has been created in anticipation of Halloween. Called Deadquarters, the space turns all those who enter into a zombie. Sony has set up a website dedicated to the space -- undeadyourself.com -- which suggests there will be some zombie-related Home in the near future. Dare we hope for full-on zombie war? Deadquarters and the Ratchet & Clank space will be available this Thursday.

Sinister Pointe, an Orange County, Calif.-based haunted house attraction, has got something special in mind for gamers this Halloween -- their annual gore-filled maze will be Silent Hill themed this time around. There's a few details on the company's site -- including an endorsement from Konami, it seems -- but no early looks at the attraction are given. We're guessing Pyramid-headed gentlemen and bloody, faceless nurses will be incorporated.

We're not certain how much a production like this costs, but if they're aiming for capturing the true Silent Hill experience, they must be spending a freaking mint on fog machines.

We talked about Halloween last month, as people were first beginning to think about the holiday, but now that it's past, it's time for us to revisit the topic. Specifically, we have to look at costumes! Gamers always seem so enthusiastic about their costumes, and they're rarely something you can throw together at the last minute with handy items from around the house.

To be perfectly honest, we don't see why Halloween can't be a week-long holiday with state-sponsored costume contests and talent shows. Then again, after two hours downtown we had a 7:8 Palin to Joker ratio, so maybe we have too much faith in the creativity of humanity (kudos to the "Most Overused Costume of 2009" Rorschach we saw).

We're asking a lot of you this time: Tell us the best and worst costumes you saw this weekend, check out these comics and vote for your favorite (polling after the break) and if you still have any logo ideas, send them in! We really appreciate what we've seen so far, and come next Saturday we'll be having a vote on the favorites.
