Speaking to <a href="http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/698157/The-Real-Reason-You-Cant-Have-More-Than-100-Xbox-Live-Friends----Halo-2.html#readmore">G4</a> late last week, a "high-level Microsoft source" said that the real reason Microsoft hasn't upped the friends list limit on 360 thus far has more to do with people still playing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-2"><em>Halo 2</em></a> on Xbox than limitations of its current console. Reportedly, the source says that Microsoft is still undecided on when to finally pull the plug and add a feature gamers have been requesting for a long time now.<br /><br />The company has made it clear in the past that it would like to implement the feature, even going so far as to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/09/ces-2009-microsoft-wants-to-increase-the-100-friend-live-limit/">explain to us at CES 2009</a> that "original Xbox games were coded to be limited to 100 friends and that limit was brought into the current generation." According to G4's source, the shuttering of <em>Halo 2</em>'s online could come after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/01/halo-3-odst-drops-down-september-22/"><em>Halo 3: ODST</em></a> drops this September, giving Microsoft two <em>Halo</em> titles to offer on the Xbox 360. The source also contends that the real decision to keep <em>Halo 2</em> online is in the hands of gamers. What say you, gamers?!<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/want-a-bigger-friends-list-stop-playing-halo-2-online/#poll33098">View Poll</a></p><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/59918">Shacknews</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/want-a-bigger-friends-list-stop-playing-halo-2-online/">Want a bigger friends list? Now, it seems that <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2008/02/11/halo-2-decides-it-wants-to-be-a-platinum-hit/"><em>Halo 2</em> has finally gone "platinum,"</a> with the required ugly box art remix, and an expected price drop down to $19.99 USD. Said ugly box art remix was recently added to Microsoft's press site.<br /><br />Currently priced at $29.99, <em>Halo 2</em>'s inception into the Platinum Hits would certainly be a good thing in terms of price. The bad side? The slick cover art of Master Chief has been cropped to make way for all the Platinum Hits gobbledeegook, and includes a big ugly inset reminding everyone that it's the "Best Selling Xbox Game Ever." The new box also reminds players that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo2"><em>Halo 2</em></a> is playable on 360 (provided you have a hard drive). <br /><br />If you have yet to pick up this modern classic, the price drop certainly makes it a good time to reconsider a purchase. When this beauty hits brick-and-mortar shelves, though, we recommend hunting down the old-box versions and requesting the new lower price. Nothing says "uncool" like owning the "greatest hits" version.<br /><br /><strong>[Update: </strong>Microsoft has confirmed the news. An official announcement is forthcoming.]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/11/halo-2-finally-joins-the-platinum-hits-collection/">Halo 2 finally joins Xbox 'Platinum Hits' collection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Feb 2008 13:30:00 EST. Amidst the hub-bub of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tgs07">Tokyo Game Show</a>, Microsoft has released <a href="http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/news/?id=17501">some new statistics and numbers</a> regarding the Xbox 360, which will have its second birthday this November. Worth noting are the stats on Xbox Live, which Microsoft reports has over 7 million subscribers so far, with 10 million anticipated by June of 2008.<br /><br />According to the stats, the original Xbox's <em>Halo 2</em> is still the most-played title on Xbox Live, followed by Epic's <em>Gears of War</em>. On Xbox Live Arcade, <em>Aegis Wing</em> is the most widely downloaded title, with family card classic <em>Uno</em> coming in second. It's clear that Microsoft considers Live to be the 360's killer app, boasting that 70% of connected console users download and play XBLA games. In terms of social networking, Microsoft is proud to have 2.6 million text and voice messages sent over their service every day, and claims that the average Live Gold user has 23 friends listed. It's no MySpace, but maybe that's a good thing...<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/20/microsoft-releases-new-statistics-expects-10m-live-users-by-jun/">Microsoft releases new statistics, expects 10m Live users by June 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 20 Sep 2007 19:20:00 EST. <br />Ladies and gentlemen, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/03/todays-chiefiest-video-master-chief-sucks-at-halo/">Master Chief</a> is back. This time he's in for a double whammy, learning that The Arbiter taped over his movies with episodes of <em>Everybody Loves Raymond</em>, and finding out that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/11/halo-3-multiplayer-beta-event-nyc/"><em>Halo 3</em></a> beta has expired. Poor Master Chief.<br /><br />He tries to soothe the pain with some <em>Halo 2</em> action, and also serves up today's video in the process. It's not quite as good as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/03/todays-chiefiest-video-master-chief-sucks-at-halo/">original</a> (not enough Master Chief laughing lolololololololololz), but it'll kill some time between now and the release of the retail version, which <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/16/halo-3-to-finish-the-fight-on-september-25th/">looms ever closer</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/20/todays-chiefiest-sequel-master-chief-sucks-at-halo-2/">Today's chiefiest sequel: Master Chief Sucks at Halo 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Aug 2007 02:00:00 EST. An adventurous and skillful modder has managed to turn a Wii remote into an Xbox 360 controller with middleware help from the PS2 control scheme -- it's as if all the console makers are working in harmony for this one hack. Try humming this to the tune of "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dem_Bones">Dem Bones</a>" (actually, don't, because we're not even going to try to fit the rhyme scheme):<br />
<ul>
    <li>The Xbox 360 is connected to the XFPS PS2 to 360 adapter</li>
    <li>... which is connected to a big black box Microcontroller "with custom firmware emulating a PS2 controller"</li>
    <li>... which is connected to a Samsung Q1 PC with custom Wii remote firmware</li>
    <li>... which is connected via Bluetooth to the Wii remote itself.</li>
</ul>

A video demonstration is embedded after the break that not only shows the control scheme work with <span style="font-style: italic;">Halo 2</span> but also the thought put into making it a comfortable and viable control scheme (such as anti-acceleration and smoothing algorithms).<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/07/diyer-puts-the-wiimote-on-your-xbox-360/">Engadget</a>; thanks, <a href="http://chrisglein.blogspot.com/">Chris</a>]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/playing-xbox-360-with-your-wii-remote/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Playing Xbox 360 with your Wii remote</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/playing-xbox-360-with-your-wii-remote/">Playing Xbox 360 with your Wii remote</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 17:25:00 EST. Modders, to put it lightly, are crazy. Case in point, a little <a href="http://obsiv.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!948789BF56FAF394!177.entry">project</a> by someone known only as OBsIV. What project, you ask? Why, nothing more than to get a <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com">Wii</a> remote to control <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo/">Halo 2</a></span> on an Xbox 360. More impressive than the feat itself it the sheer amount of <span style="font-style: italic;">stuff</span> required to do it. Behold:<br />
<ul>
    <li>Wiimote and Nunchuk</li>
    <li>Xbox 360</li>
    <li>PC</li>
    <li>XFPS 360</li>
    <li>Custom drivers</li>
    <li>"Black box" (hard coded microcontroller with spliced PS2 cable)</li>
</ul>
As amazing as the mod is, we're almost more impressed that OBsIV found a good use for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/30/x360f-review-xfps-kb-and-mouse-on-360/">XFPS 360</a>. Check out a video of the mod in action after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/got-a-small-fortune-play-halo-2-with-a-wiimote/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Got a small fortune? <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/01/28/wii-warm-up-wii60/">Wii60</a> aficionado OBsIV had a dream, a dream of consoles living and working together under one flag, sharing games and controls without any problems or hitches. Today, friends (actually, yesterday), that dream is a reality. After months of hard work, OBsIV was able to cruise around Lockout in <em>Halo 2</em>, battle rifle in tow ... and it was all powered by his trusty <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/playing-xbox-360-games-with-a-wii-remote/">Wii remote and nunchuk</a> combo. For the record, we approve of his taste in both weapons <em>and</em> control schemes. You can see it all for yourself in the video we've helpfully embedded after the break, but if you want to do this yourself, you'll need to head over and read the very detailed explanation. We hope you also happen to have a few chunks of spare time lying around, as welI as a lot of random equipment. This was a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/revolutionary/"><em>project</em></a>, but after watching the video, we're sure you'll agree that it was well worth it.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/wii60-in-action-wiimote-halo-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii60 in action: Wiimote Halo 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/07/wii60-in-action-wiimote-halo-2/">Wii60 in action: Wiimote Halo 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 07 Aug 2007 15:55:00 EST. A <em>Halo 2 </em>tournament occuring at a Chicago area library has sparked some criticism, according to <a href="http://www.dailyherald.com/news/cookstory.asp?id=334068&amp;cc=c&amp;tc=&amp;t=">Daily Herald</a>. Dr. David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family (NIMF) has taken issue with the permission slip that does "<span class="News">not spell out" that the shooter is rated M by the ESRB.<br /><br />"</span><span class="News">I think it borders on irresponsibility for a public library to sponsor an activity for kids as young as 12 that the industry itself has said is for adults," he said. <br /><br />The library's director </span>Marilyn Genther <span class="News">stands by its tournament, which was recommend by the library's teen council, saying it's the responsibility of their parents to know what their kids are doing. Said teen director Rose Allen, "</span>I've talked to a number of parents who thanked me for having the tournament. They said their son now wants to come to the library."<br /><span class="News"><br />Maybe it should be mentioned on the permission slip that <em>Halo 2</em> is rated M, but compared to other M-rated games, it could be a lot worse. The tournament is scheduled for Sunday at the <a href="http://www.mppl.org/">Mount Prospect Public Library</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gamepolitics.com/2007/07/24/librarys-halo-2-contest-causes-a-stink/">GamePolitics</a>]<br /><br /></span><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/24/halo-2-tournament-at-library-causes-ire/">Halo 2 tournament at library causes ire</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 24 Jul 2007 20:15:00 EST. It's not called a <em>Halo 2</em> headset guys and mistakes like that could so get a guy's hand chopped off or tongue ripped out. Unless of course the ad isn't a mistake and is really a leaked announcement. Maybe something along the idea that the <em>Halo 3</em> wireless headset will come with a free copy of <em>Halo 2</em> Vista. That's it! It's confirmed, buy the <em>Halo 3</em> wireless headset and get <em>Halo 2</em> Vista for free. Rooster Teeth promises that there will be a few one-off <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/RedVsBlue/">Red Vs. Blue</a></em> episodes, but for now, the series as we know it is no more. Episode 100 is <a href="http://rvb.roosterteeth.com/forum/viewTopic.php?id=2207523#">available now</a> in all its 15 minute glory. The episode hasn't been released in embeddable format, so you might as well head over to Rooster Teeth, watch the episode, and join the already lengthy discussion. Yes, it is the end of an era. We wish the crew at Rooster Teeth the best of luck in their <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/1800magic">new endeavors.</a><br /><br />[Thanks, NitroFrost]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/28/the-end-is-here-red-vs-blue-100/">The end is here: Red Vs. Unfortunately for Falling Leaf, the hacking group <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razor_1911">Razor 1911</a> has already cracked* <em>Shadowrun</em> according to the <a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40538">Inquirer</a>. Apparently, all the crack does is overwrite a few files in the installation directory. It should be noted that the crack only allows for single player against bots and multiplayer over LAN. As far as we know, online multiplayer is still restricted to Vista.<br /><br />Falling Leaf expects its solution to arrive in late July.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/halo-2-shadowrun-made-playable-on-xp/">Joystiq</a>]<br /><br /><em>*If you want the crack, you'll have to find it on your own; we're not linking it.<br /></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/27/shadowrun-now-playable-on-xp/">Shadowrun now playable on XP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 12:30:00 EST. Beating <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/11/halo-2-shadowrun-made-playable-on-xp/">Falling Leaf</a> to the punch, members of the hacking group <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razor_1911">Razor1911</a> have managed to hack the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Vista/">Vista</a>-only <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/shadowrun"><em>Shadowrun</em></a> to work on Windows XP, the <a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40538">Inquirer</a> reports. The crack, weighing in at less than 5 MB, reportedly removes the need for DirectX 10. (No, we're not linking to it -- you can find it yourself.)<br /><br />With the crack, you can only play single-player against bots or multiplayer LAN games. Falling Leaf, who has stated they will be providing free code for those who purchase the game on Amazon via their <a href="http://www.fallingleafsystems.com/preorder/">pre-order page</a>, still estimates cracks for Vista-only <em>Shadowrun </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo2"><em>Halo 2</em></a> by "late July."<strong><br /></strong><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/26/vista-only-shadowrun-cracked-playable-on-xp/">Vista-only Shadowrun cracked, playable on XP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 26 Jun 2007 17:55:00 EST. Not only was it released during the <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/tag/h3beta07"><em>Halo 3 Beta</em></a>, but on the same day as the considerably more anticipated racer, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/forza2"><em>Forza Motorsport 2</em></a>. And while it's too early to decide whether the suicide mission was a success or not (depending on how you look at it), Circuit City is <a href="http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/06/17/free-shadowrun-with-halo-2-purchase-already">dumping</a> their Vista copies of <em>Shadowrun</em> for "free," as long as you don't mind it piggy-backing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/new-games-this-week-halo-2-vista-finally-arrives/"><em>Halo 2 Vista</em></a> for $39.99.<br /><br /><em>Shadowrun</em>, like an episode of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugly_betty">Ugly Betty</a>, is proof that underneath it all is something worth getting to know, but not something worth getting for more than $20. Still, judging from <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/halo2">reviews</a>, this could be a way to get folks to spend their money, officially, on the much debated <em>Halo 2 Vista</em> port.<br /><br />Regardless of whichever way you see it: $40 bucks for <em>Halo 2 Vista</em> or a free copy of <em>Shadowrun</em>, there seems to be a loser somewhere in this scenario.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/06/18/circuit-city-offers-free-copies-of-shadowrun-to-halo-2-vista-buy/">Circuit City offers free copies of Shadowrun to Halo 2 Vista buyers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 18 Jun 2007 19:55:00 EST. What has caused them ire? Microsoft making <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo2/">Halo 2</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Shadowrun/">Shadowrun</a></em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Vista/">Vista</a>-only. So they decided to make them XP-compatible.<br />
<br />
The company is promising that if you buy one of the games through Amazon via the <a href="http://www.fallingleafsystems.com/preorder/">links on their page</a>, then they will send you for free their initial release of compatibility software that will let you"run these Windows Vista titles on Windows XP," they claim. <br />
<br />
Said Falling Leaf Systems CEO Brian Thomason, "first [Microsoft] claim that it was impossible to implement DirectX 10 compatibility atop Windows XP, and now they also want us to believe that they couldn't successfully launch two DirectX 9 based titles on XP either. We plan to expose both theories as patently false."<br />
<br />
We're not sure if the software will work as planned, or how Microsoft might try to prevent the games from going online. The expected shipment date is "within a few months," according to their press release; the pre-order page estimates late July.<br />

You'd like to play <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo2/">Halo 2</a></em> on your PC, but you don't have/want Windows Vista? Also, just for signing up and playing <em>Halo 2,</em> you're automatically entered to win an Elite, Xbox Live subscriptions and accessories as part of the Play &amp; Win contest. Complete contest details are available after the jump.<br /><br />So, un-learn all your <em>Halo 3</em> beta tactics and hop online for some <em>Halo 2</em>. Unfortunately, other types gaming don't have this, and when you start blurring the line between such forms of entertainment, there's bound to be a clash, right? Well, the guys at PA seem to <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/06/06">think</a> so with the recent <a href="http://www.wizkidsgames.com/wk_article.asp?cid=41237&amp;frame=company">announcement</a> of <em>Halo Clix</em>. <a href="http://halo.bungie.org/">HBO</a> community member turned Bungie employee KP seems pretty <a href="http://carnage.bungie.org/haloforum/halo.forum.pl?read=807650">convinced</a> about their source material. Another week, another batch of games to steal your time and money in exchange for a few moments of fun. We love it. The big news comes from two magic words under the PC release list: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo2"><em>Halo 2</em></a>. After several delays, including the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/halo-2-vista-delayed-because-of-partial-nudity/">most recent one involving nudity</a>, Vista owners can finally get their <em>Halo</em> on. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/samandmax">Adventure gamers</a> also have something to celebrate this week, as <em>Secrets of Atlantis</em> is hitting the PC in just a few days. Finally, <em>Surf's Up</em> is ready to make a huge splash, drenching every console with its fishy movie tie-in stench. <br /><br />Read on for a few dozen other excuses to play hooky.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-windows-vista/">Halo 2 (Windows Vista)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-windows-vista/#255930"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/halo2-vista-0528-01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-windows-vista/#255921"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/halo2-vista-0528-02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-windows-vista/#255916"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/halo2-vista-0528-03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-windows-vista/#255912"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/halo2-vista-0528-04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-windows-vista/#255913"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/05/halo2-vista-0528-05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/new-games-this-week-halo-2-vista-finally-arrives/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New games this week: Halo 2 Vista finally arrives edition</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/28/new-games-this-week-halo-2-vista-finally-arrives/">New games this week: Halo 2 Vista finally arrives edition</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 May 2007 12:58:00 EST. Whoops! So, <em>Halo 2</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/08/halo-2-for-windows-vista-bumped-back-to-may-22/">missed</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/24/halo-2-vista-coming-may-31-in-us-june-8-in-europe/">both</a> of its Vista release dates, also missing the opportunity to be called the first Games for Windows Live-enabled title (that honor now belongs to <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Shadowrun/">Shadowrun</a></em>). Their first excuse was the relatively banal: we need to "make some improvements to the install experience and address other technical issues." Their newest excuse? Oh, it's much juicier than that. According to GameDaily BIZ, this second delay was due to "an unfortunate, obscure content error which includes partial nudity." Oh yeah, cue the chanting monks, we're imagining some Hot Coffee style minigames with Master Chief and the Arbiter.<br /><br />Microsoft has updated the packaging and is making a patch available at Halo2.com to remove the content in question. Future releases will have the content removed. What was the content? Do you really want to know? According to the ESRB: "a photograph of an individual showing his bare backside to the user when a particular error occurs." Oh Microsoft, you could have made this so much more scandalous if you only tried harder.<em><br /></em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/25/halo-2-vista-delayed-because-of-partial-nudity/">Halo 2 Vista delayed because of "partial nudity"</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 May 2007 13:24:00 EST. After a long wait, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo">Halo</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo2">2</a></em> is coming to Windows Vista-equipped PCs June 8 in Europe; the North American version, which was originally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/08/halo-2-for-windows-vista-bumped-back-to-may-22/">pushed back</a> to May 22 but obviously missed that mark, will arrive May 31. The game will retail for &pound;34.99 / $49.99, respectively.<br />
<br />
When reached for comment, a spokesperson for Microsoft said, "<em>Halo 2</em> for Windows Vista did not release to retailers on May 22, as previously announced and will now ship from manufacturers on May 31. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Shadowrun/">Shadowrun</a></em> will be the first game to debut the highly anticipated Games for Windows - LIVE system on May 29. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers."<br />

PC gamers have been waiting over two and a half years for <em>Halo 2</em> to break free from its console chains. Xbox 360 users are currently enjoying the <em>Halo 3 beta</em>. Those who did not get into the beta can check out our sister site <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/tag/h3beta07">Xbox 360 Fanboy</a> for extensive beta coverage.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/24/halo-2-vista-coming-may-31-in-us-june-8-in-europe/">Halo 2 Vista coming May 31 in US, June 8 in Europe</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 May 2007 14:25:00 EST. If there's one complaint people have about the <em>Halo 3</em> beta it would have to be that the graphics aren't what some had hoped to see. Nobody is saying that the graphics are horrible, people are just saying that they aren't <em>Gears of War </em>quality or a gigantic leap over what <em>Halo 2</em> has to offer. But if you really think about it, how much have <em>Halo 3</em>'s graphics improved over its older bro? <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/features/6170862/p-1.html">Gamespot</a> dusted off their copy of <em>Halo 2 </em>on a mission to find out. They took a few screenshots from both <em>Halo 2</em> and the <em>Halo 3</em> beta and showcased them in complete image rollover fun. And, from what we see, the differences are quite noticeable. The textures and reflective surfaces in <em>Halo 3</em> are far superior to <em>Halo 2</em>, even the geometry is beefed up. But that's expected on a next gen game. It all comes down to what your expectations are and if you feel the visuals took a big enough leap. What do you think about the comparison?<br />

What is more, it occurred yesterday, which just happened to be the 2.5 year anniversary of <em>Halo 2</em>'s launch. Specifically, 5 million unique Live accounts have logged into <em>Halo 2</em> (not including guests). Of course, this total includes every single Live account, including free trials (read: cheaters) and people who only tried the game for 5 minutes. As it happens, the 5 millionth player was "ultra theodore." Ultra indeed.<br />

We knew it was coming, but that doesn't make the hurt any less deep. As part of the new maps finally being rolled into matchmaking playlists, Bungie has officially <a href="http://www.bungie.net/news/content.aspx?type=news&amp;cid=12427">reset the ranks</a> on <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo2/">Halo 2</a></em>. A cause of great happiness to some and a source of deep anger to others, the rank refresh is sure to rankle many a player. Of course, others will have a new reason to start playing <em>Halo 2</em> again. Another bombshell of sorts (even though Bungie <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/halo-2-reset-and-matchmaking-updates-delayed/">informed the masses</a> weeks ago), several of the updated playlists require that you have the new maps. A few playlists (most notably Team Hardcore) remain unchanged, so players without the new maps still have some online options. Finally, Bungie has announced that the new map will be free starting sometime in July. So, if you're still playing <em>Halo 2</em> and you want the new maps but you're light on funds, all is not lost.<br />
<br />
Now if you'll excuse us, we have to go own some noobs before our rank resettles in its rightful place.<br />

Seeing as today is the 8th, and <em><a href="http://xbox360fanboy.com/tag/halo2">Halo 2</a> Vista</em> isn't on store shelves, Microsoft gave us the heads up one the current sitrep. For the sake of quality end-user experience and a few technical issues, <em>Halo 2 Vista</em>'s ship date has been moved back to May 22nd, a mere <em>fortnight</em> after the initial release schedule. Better late than never, we always say. Speaking of the 22nd, a reliable source gave word to expect <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Shadowrun"><em>Shadowrun</em></a> to also drop on the 22nd, perhaps beefing up the Live Anywhere launch. But you didn't hear it from us.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/08/halo-2-vista-ship-date-moved-to-the-22nd/">Halo 2 Vista ship date moved to the 22nd</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 May 2007 17:30:00 EST. It's May 8th. Today marks the anniversary of Ghandi's 21-day fast and VE Day, the births of luminaries like Saul Bass and Edmund Wilson, and (to a <em>somewhat</em> lesser extent) the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/14/games-for-windows-live-and-halo-2-hit-vista-may-8th/">planned release</a> of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Halo2/">Halo 2</a></em> for Windows Vista. Unfortunately, that date is ... well, it's today and <em>Halo 2</em> is not in our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/new-games-this-week-command-and-conquer-3-edition/">weekly round-up</a> of new games releases signifying its absence on retailers yearning shelves. The rationale: Microsoft needed to "make some improvements to the install experience and address other technical issues."<br /><br />The new release date is May 22nd, which of course marks the seventeenth anniversary of the release of the Windows 3.0 operating system. Now there's some corporate synergy for you! But what about May 16th ... what happens on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/10/halo-3-beta-date-confirmed-for-may/">May 16th</a> again? Ah, Pierce Brosnan's birthday. You know about the Red Bull Flugtag, right? Chances are you've probably seen a commercial for it on TV, watching as hapless inventors and goofballs try to make their man-made craft soar through the air.<br /><br />Well, you <em>Halo</em> fans will have a reason to watch if the voting goes your way. One special craft vying for the wild card spot at the Nashville Flugtag is the <a href="http://www.redbullflugtagusa.com/Nashville/peoples-choice.aspx"><em>Halo 2</em> GhostBike</a>. A brief update for those of you <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/26/halo-2-map-download-problems-continue/">fidgeting</a> with downloading the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo2">Halo 2</a></em> Blastacular maps: You can stop cursing the screen, put down the mallet, and quietly pick up the controller to try <em>one. more. time.</em> to get those little buggers off of Microsoft's uncooperative servers and onto your yearning Xbox. Bungie explains what the problems were but, to be honest, we weren't listening. We were busy pondering their promise to "accelerate the maps' introduction into matchmaking."<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-maps/">Halo 2 Blastacular Map Pack</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-maps/#210502"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/h2_desfp_01sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-maps/#198854"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/halo2_desolation_800px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Desolation" title="Desolation" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-maps/#210504"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/h2_desfp_02sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-maps/#198853"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/03/halo2_tombstone_800px_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Tombstone" title="Tombstone" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/halo-2-maps/#210485"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2007/04/h2_desfp_03sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/03/halo-2-blastacular-map-pack-downloads-fixed/">Halo 2 Blastacular Map Pack downloads fixed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 19:32:00 EST. This week, Frankie brings new <em>Halo 3 </em>details and talks the big boy talk, so let's jump right in. Some big news is that the <em>Halo 3</em> beta will support a (widescreen enhanced) two player split screen option. So, you'll be able to share the <em>Halo 3</em> beta love with your friends. Speaking of the beta, Bungie unveiled the default control scheme for the game with a pretty graphic that maps out each button's function. It looks like the RB will take most of the X button's old functions and that silly d-pad will activate voice chat. Also, Frankie shot down a few<em> Halo 3 </em>rumors that hit the intertubes this week. First, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/25/halo-3-preview-may-11th/">May 11th</a> is only important for those lucky enough to be considered "press" as they'll be playing the beta a few days before the rest of us so they can get their stories written ... that's it. Secondly, <em>Halo 3</em> is not going to be native <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/24/halo-3-brings-the-true-1080p-pain/">1080p at 60fps</a> as speculated earlier, it's just not practical. And finally, the image above is the second wave of <em>Halo 3'</em>s marketing materials considered the "emotional" phase. Can't you feel it all, Cortana's eyes, the despair, the hope ... it pulls at your heart strings. You know what to do, make the jump for all the Weekly Update details to make sure you're the cool kid who has this week's <em>Halo 3</em> dish.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/28/halo-3-details-and-rumors-shot-down/">Halo 3 details and rumors shot down</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 28 Apr 2007 00:15:00 EST. With the release of the two new multiplayer maps, Bungie had hoped to implement them into matchmaking and do a rank reset. But due to people having <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/bungie-explains-halo-2-360-download-issues/">troubles</a> getting the maps they are waiting a little longer. Though, Frankie assures us that they are actively working with the Xbox team to figure out all the anomalies that sprung up with releasing the maps the way they did. So, enjoy your <em>Halo 2</em> rank one blissful week longer.<br /><br />[Thanks, Zac LaCombe]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/27/halo-2-reset-and-matchmaking-updates-delayed/">Halo 2 reset and matchmaking updates delayed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Apr 2007 14:00:00 EST. True Xbox fanboys have already played <em>Halo 2</em> so much that the game disc has started to warp, but our PC friends are just getting a taste of what it has to offer with the release of<em> Halo 2</em> on Windows Vista. And with a Vista release, <em>Halo 2 </em>received a graphical upgrade with crisper textures and sleeker models. Don't believe us? The <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/features/6169711/index.html">Gamespot</a> crew posted a graphical comparison of<em> Halo 2</em>, pitting the Xbox version against its newer Vista cousin. The screenshots make it more than obvious that there is a startling contrast between the muddy Xbox graphics and the higher res Vista screens. And why shouldn't the game look prettier on Vista? Though, you have to remember that this is a port, so the graphics weren't majorly reworked. They were just kicked up a notch or two. Anyone using Vista and thinking about getting <em>Halo 2</em> or will you be holding out a few more months for some <em>Halo 3</em>?<br />

The iconic chanting has firmly planted itself in the hearts and minds of gamers the world over. It even seems that the haunting refrain has wormed its way into the great minds of Yale University. In one of the recent performances of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/videogameslive">Video Games Live</a>, the Yale Symphony Orchestra-Choir performed pieces from the games. The group performed music from both <em>Halo 2</em> and the first <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/halo-3-trailer-see-it-again-for-the-first-time/"><em>Halo 3</em> trailer</a>, all set to footage from the series. Tommy Tallarico even busted out the electric guitar for the finale. Try not to eat too much salt and fried foods.<br />2. Be excellent to each other.<br />3. Never break a date.<br /><br />Now, <em>somebody</em> over at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> clearly missed lesson three. It's possible that some of you have read their dubious <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/byobr-joystiq-ponies-up-and-checks-out-halo-2s-latest-maps/">impressions</a> of the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/new-halo-2-maps-get-ripped-apart/"><em>Halo 2</em> maps</a>. Some of you may even have found them informative or (gasp!) helpful. Rest assured, all your assumptions concerning Joystiq's impressions of the maps are false. Why? Because we weren't there. That's right, the resident Xbox 360 Fanboys of the Joystiq network were not in on the fun. Oh, sure, we were <em>supposed</em> to be, but somewhere along the line, common courtesy and group planning went out the window. We're not bitter or anything though. Oh, no. We really enjoyed sitting there for an hour, pwning noobs (mostly) for a few games in the rancid cesspool known as Rumble Pit (where the new maps aren't available yet, by the way). No, we're not bitter. We're just <em>hurt</em>. In fact, we should probably just be alone. Hurry up, hit the "read" link and read Joystiq's impressions. Just go ... everybody else does.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/joystiq-plays-new-halo-2-maps-breaks-heart/">Joystiq plays new Halo 2 maps, breaks heart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 17:00:00 EST. The new <em>Halo 2</em> maps Tombstone and Desolation have been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/new-halo-2-maps-are-ready-for-action/">released</a> for like, what, 30 hours and are already being torn apart. Over at <a href="http://nikon.bungie.org/news.html?item=18399">Halo.bungie.org</a> the legendary Mr. Wu posted a bunch of links cataloging all the glitches and easter eggs surrounding the two new maps, including an original <em>Halo</em> pistol <a href="http://halo.snaver.net/files/images/H2_Maps/Hidden_Pistol/index.html">sighting</a>. And yes, you can pick it up via modding. People have even found a way to <a href="http://www.rampancy.net/story/trick/18042007/tombstone_falls_victim_to_zero_day_glitches">get out of the map</a> in Tombstone, avoiding the instant kill barriers that float above head. Poor new <em>Halo 2</em> maps ... you didn't even stand a chance.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/18/new-halo-2-maps-get-ripped-apart/">New Halo 2 maps get ripped apart</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Apr 2007 13:45:00 EST. Mere hours before the call to arms, we found ourselves leisurely strolling through the Forerunner facility that would make up our first field of battle, Desolation. The curious chrips and croaks of local wildlife we heard would soon be lost over the constant barrage of gunfire and wash of plasma. <a href="http://www.certainaffinity.com/">Certain Affinity</a> had truly outdone themselves and while appreciating their <a href="http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&amp;cid=12358">masterful</a> work is one thing, painting it with the blood of those damned, <a href="http://www.roosterteethstore.com/tshirts_red.html">dirty blues</a> is quite another.<br />
<br />
After all, the real art in these multiplayer death traps is found well below a nice coat of paint.<br />
<br />
By now, all of the Halo nation should be aware that yesterday saw the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/halo-2-blastacular-maps-now-available-for-4/">release</a> of two brand-new multiplayer maps, Desolation and Tombstone. As recreations of <em>Combat Evolved's</em> Derelict and Hang Em' High, we've been itching to find out how they stack up to the classics. But in order to really get down to business, we needed worthy opponents. Folks who really know their stuff. So, on the eve of their <a href="http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Hump_Day_Challenge">Hump Day Challenge</a>, we took on the folks at <a href="http://1up.com">1UP</a> to get a serious look at how these two maps play out. <br />

It seems that a few people are experiencing download issues regarding the new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/new-halo-2-maps-are-ready-for-action/"><em>Halo 2</em> maps</a>. Being the wonderful (and hauntingly beautiful) people that they are, Bungie has posted some handy instructions for downloading the maps problem free. The problems arise from 360 users that don't have a credit card associated with their account, which wasn't possible on the original Xbox. If you find yourself in this particular situation you must do the following (courtesy of <a href="http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&amp;cid=12366">Bungie.net</a>):<br />
<br />
<em>1. In the Xbox Dashboard, select the profile that you want to modify, and then select Account Management.<br />
2. Select Memberships.<br />
3. Select the membership that you want to update.<br />
4. Select Change Payment Options.<br />
5. Select Add Credit Card.<br />
6. Enter the credit card information for the card that you want to add. This can also be a debit or Visa (or similar) gift card, however, some restrictions may apply.</em><br />
<br />
There is also an issue involving European users using PAL-60 TV standard. If you are using this standard and running your 360 over VGA, you will be unable to download the new maps. The solution is to hook up your 360 with a composite video cable to download the maps. Of course, you will need an ordinary television to do this.<br />
<br />
Bungie has also listed the playlists that will feature the new maps. Expect the playlist update to arrive next week. In the meantime, the new maps will only be available for custom games. Hit the "read" link for the full story.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/17/bungie-explains-halo-2-360-download-issues/">Bungie explains Halo 2 360 download issues</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 Apr 2007 13:45:00 EST.
